RINGING THE CHANGES

French concept store Le 66 brings a taste of Parisian shopping culture to Lebanon with its franchise outpost in Beirut Central District. The city’s largest concept store, Le 66 showcases menswear, womenswear and accessories from over 250 designers across over 1,000 square metres of retail space and four storeys, designed by renowned French architect Isabelle Stanislas. As part of its global expansion plan, Le 66 will continue to roll out new stores in destinations such as Bangkok, Dubai and Kuwait. Each franchise will remain unique, thanks to different architects and a stock selection process that means no more than a quarter of any shop’s range will be shared with another shop. th Le 66, 151 Foch Street, Beirut Central District, +961 (0)1 985470, le66.fr

Architect and designer Guillaume Crédoz has spent over 20 years developing pioneering design technology. He has transferred his unusual skill set into creating 3D printed rings (from 50,000 LBP). These extraordinary accessories are first drawn by hand, then 3D-printed before being cast in either brass, silver, or gold-plated metal. GET READY Lebanon’s ready-to-wear designers’ versatile, accessible, desirable pieces are developing a reputation to rival that of the country’s bespoke creations, as Verity Hogan discovers

‘If you go out and another woman is wearing the same dress or the same shirt, it’s a disaster, a catastrophe,’ says Lebanese designer Milia Maroun on the appeal of bespoke. Lebanon’s bespoke industry is internationally renowned and one-off pieces by the country’s top designers, including Zuhair Murad, Reem Acra and couturier Elie Saab are regularly seen on the red carpet. This trio has helped to establish Lebanon’s reputation for creating world-class bespoke fashion, but the country’s ready-towear offerings have remained largely under the radar. However, recent years have seen a new crop of designers turning towards ready-towear collections, celebrating the accessibility and versatility that this type of fashion affords. Milia Maroun has been designing her eponymous ready-to-wear range for 17

The Milia M label specialises in versatile wardrobe staples, feminine and functional, that can be dressed up or down years, having shown her first collection in Beirut in 1999. Combining Maroun’s diverse background, including stints as a lingerie designer and fashion lecturer, with her adventurous spirit, the Milia M brand has an international feel with wide appeal. It’s the perfect aesthetic for a designer who thrives on seeing women wear – and love – her pieces, and this is one of the reasons she chose not to go down the bespoke route. ‘Ready-to-wear has much more mobility, the collection itself travels further and more easily, and the same piece can be bought by someone in America and someone in Kazakhstan at the same time,’ she explains. ‘That has always got me excited, having my collection all over the world.’ This global awareness has helped Maroun to become one of the first Lebanese ready-towear designers to make a mark worldwide. She trained in Paris, was invited to show at Milan Fashion Week in 2008 and has made London her brand’s second home. This international outlook is also evident in her collections, 111

although she can find inspiration virtually anywhere. ‘I’m quite mobile in that I travel a lot, I move a lot and I go out,’ she says. ‘But anything can be an inspiration, like a vision around a corner or the movement of a woman falling off her high heels in a long skirt.’ The result is a line with a timeless quality that has attracted a legion of devoted fans. ‘Women who have my pieces get quite attached to them,’ the designer explains. ‘There’s an aspect that’s everlasting and you can have a piece from 10 years ago which you can still wear without feeling that it’s outdated.’ Milia M specialises in versatile wardrobe staples, feminine and functional, that can be dressed up or down with just a few accessories. Mira Hayek has a similar philosophy, consciously choosing to pursue ready-to-wear. ‘It’s important to me to create pieces that become part of your lifestyle,’ she explains and

her collections feature ‘comfortable, modern pieces with a playful edge that can take you from day to night.’ After completing a master’s degree in Milan, Hayek returned to Beirut in 2009 and launched her first collection in 2011. Hayek’s designs are based on contemporary sportswear and feature fresh, graphic prints and flowing shapes that appeal to an eclectic clientele. Her inspirations are similarly diverse and include film, animation, electronic music and graphic design. Her spring/summer 2016 collection draws inspiration from John Rawlings, one of the most prolific fashion photographers of the 20th century. Hayek previously worked with Elie Saab and this proved crucial in establishing her own label. She describes her experience with Saab as one that ‘paved my way and encouraged me to start my own brand – an irreplaceable and necessary experience.’

Up-and-coming designer Hussein Bazaza’s eclectic inspirations include chemistry, biology, nature and art Up-and-coming designer Hussein Bazaza also spent time at Elie Saab. ‘It was a great experience being able to see how the brand operates from the inside,’ he explains. ‘It gave me the confidence to open my own atelier.’ The experience may also have contributed to Bazaza’s design aesthetic, with collections that strike the perfect balance between ready-towear and bespoke. His focus is on ‘quality and exclusivity, and at the same time, I want pieces to be wearable and affordable.’ Bazaza finds beauty in the most unlikely places, taking inspiration from chemistry, biology, nature, architecture and art. He creates highly sculpted pieces with a distinctive silhouette and it’s a style that has brought him success. Bazaza’s spring/summer 2016 collection is available in boutiques across the Middle East and the designer is growing his team to keep up with demand and help with his upcoming European expansion. He’s also following in the footsteps of Lebanon’s highprofile designers by launching a collection at Rome Fashion Week in July 2016. While Bazaza may be looking to expand into bespoke, ready-to-wear remains at the core of his collections and it’s a world that he and his fellow ready-to-wear designers are unlikely to ever turn their backs on completely. ‘I love couture; I love the exclusiveness, I love the high quality,’ explains Maroun. ‘You can afford to spend a lot on a couture piece, so it opens up a lot of freedom for a designer, but it also confines them – that creation is confined to one person. Ready-to-wear is democratic – you can wear something beautiful, I can wear it, anybody can wear it.’ Above (both): Hussein Bazaza spring/summer 2016

eirut is renowned as the nightlife capital of the Middle East. With its East meets West feel, this richly cosmopolitan city presents a range of bars and restaurants ofering everything from an intimate, romantic evening to a lively night out with friends. ‘Nothing compares to Beirut in terms of variety, cost, and ambience,’ says Joseph Freiha, director of food and beverages at the Four Seasons Hotel Beirut. ‘The city has something to ofer for everyone, no matter what day of the week it is.’ For all this diversity, there is a common theme at the city’s bars and clubs and that’s a love of Beirut’s beautiful architecture and an enjoyment of the country’s balmy spring and summer weather. This is a city that excels in life al fresco at the top of a high building ‒ and you can fnd enough rooftop bars in the city to please

everyone. Some people want the best views in town; for others the atmosphere is all-important. Yet often these factors become less signifcant than the simple pleasure of being atop a building in an exclusive space with nothing above you but the night sky. Beirut is a particularly striking city when seen from above. The Mediterranean Sea, the mountains and the port are landmarks visible from most terraces. The city’s ancient architecture is also a wonder to behold. ‘Enjoy the views of ruins from the Canaanite, Roman and Ottoman eras,’ recommends Antoine Rizk, director of food and beverage at Le Gray. Boasting not one but three rooftop options, this hotel is a key player on the Beirut scene and has been a prominent part of the city’s social life for years. Le Gray’s Indigo on the Roof has a

Whether you are dancing or dining, the nightlife in Beirut is all about enjoying the beauty of the city from above lush garden terrace and serves food throughout the day; on the sixth foor, Cherry on the Rooftop is a casual, relaxed summer spot with a fabulous infnity pool; Bar ThreeSixty is a chic, enclosed retreat for the winter months and ofers panoramic views of the Mediterranean and Mount Lebanon. Just a few streets away, the Four Seasons is one of the tallest buildings in the city, at some 119 metres. Its Roof lounge is a seminal Beirut destination, renowned for its exclusive vibe. Lounge beds surround a sparkling pool, a cooling sight by day and a sparkling feature by night. The striking design of bold white masts stretching skywards makes this one of the most

beautiful rooftops in Beirut, and a romantic spot, too. From here you can look out to the Med and over to the mountains, while enjoying excellent Asian fusion cuisine. Another must-visit is Iris at the top of the An Nahar building nearby. Loved by all Beirutis, Iris is one of the most important bars in the city, and it ofers gorgeous views of the sea and the port. It has a very upmarket feel; this is a place to go dressed in your fnery. Its open-air setting, coupled with great food and fantastic service, makes it a relaxed yet refned venue. You can’t beat the view at sunset from Coop D’Etat, one of the most laid-back bars

in the city. With rustic decor and a carefree vibe, it overlooks Beirut port and its focus is all about enjoying the sight of the sun dipping behind the boats while you savour some truly great food. For a view with a diference, head to O Monot hotel. Its rooftop bar overlooks the heart of the city, the arty Saif village neighbourhood and the historic Achrafeh district, as well as the port and the sea, so you can spend ages simply getting your bearings and watching the world go by below. ‘This is such a great place for sunset drinks with friends,’ says Beirut lifestyle blogger Lynn Bedran Fares. If you want a terrifc panorama of the sea make for C-Lounge. The best thing about this local favourite is that every seat has a view – and what a view. Relatively small, with a noreservations policy, it has a friendly atmosphere Above (from top): Iris; the rooftop bar at O Monot hotel

and is a great place to start the evening. Grab a seat anywhere, order one of C-Lounge’s renowned cocktails and watch the sun slip behind the horizon. With sunset casting a pink glow across the rippling Mediterranean this bar is something really special. White Beirut, which overlooks the coast on Sea Side Road, is popular with movers and shakers. With world-class music and a hip party vibe, this is a great venue at which to dance the night away – just make sure you dress to impress. Whether you are dancing or dining, sipping passion fruit mojitos or sampling the local wine, the nightlife in Beirut is all about enjoying the beauty of the city from above. Add to that a striking sunset and you have the components for a perfect evening’s festivities

Nathalie Trad has captivated the style elite with her unique, architecturally styled shell-based clutches. The Lebanese designer talks to Beth Druce about her inspirations

Designer Nathalie Trad was born in Lebanon and raised in Dubai, and her Middle Eastern roots have greatly infuenced her work. ‘The culture is embedded in me,’ she explains. ‘It is running in my veins, imprinted on my identity.’ With a father who worked in advertising and a mother who runs ‘a beautiful fower shop’, creativity was part of her upbringing. ‘Witnessing the transformation of Beirut and being part of a family and environment surrounded by art and design contributed tremendously to my appetite for the design world,’ she says. Trad moved to Paris aged 17 to study for a degree at the prestigious Esmod International 109

fashion school. It was in Paris, she explains, that she ‘developed a strong penchant for asymmetric design that today forms the basis of my work.’ Trad honed her signature style to take ‘classic shapes, ubiquitous in our natural environment, and radically transform them, deconstructing and always trying to redefne the boundaries of fashion aesthetics.’ After graduating, Trad relocated to New York to attend Parsons School of Design, where she gained a BBA in design and management, and undertook a mentorship at womenswear brand Proenza Schouler. These experiences proved invaluable. ‘From a designer’s perspective, New York and Paris defnitely Lef: Nathalie Trad Webster clutch with mother of pearl shell and emerald resin

Nathalie Trad clutches are works of art that would look at home on the mantelpiece of your living room collection, with rectangular boxes embellished with brass. ‘I love to complement the shell with other materials such as wood, resin, copper, brass and stainless steel, creating a marriage of seemingly incompatible materials that end up harmonising beautifully,’ she explains. For spring/summer 2016, Trad draws inspiration from the art deco style of Miami’s South Beach neighbourhood. A monochrome palette forms the backdrop for a collection of

served as a breeding ground for my creativity. I got to refect, absorb and take stock of my surroundings, then redirect this new fow of energy into my own work. Being in those cities truly pushed me to expand my thought process and explore the realm of possibilities within my designs,’ she explains. Today Trad’s eponymous line of clutches is sold in 25 cities around the globe. Her designs, with their asymmetric, architectural style and hard shell structure, stand out in an era where ‘It’ bags often feature leather and shiny metal hardware. ‘I always tend to gravitate towards shell as a base material, which we source from the Far East: a treasure trove of exquisite materials,’ she says. ‘The richness of the shell mirrors my inspiration and is perfectly in line with the vision I have for my clutches.’ Each clutch is like a work of art and would look equally at home on the mantelpiece of your living room as it would under your arm on a night out. Trad’s signature creations include the Polygonia collection of polygon-shaped clutches in stainless steel or wood, and the Eliferia

clutches that seeks to capture the essence of the area’s architecture. The sparkle of a terrazzo foor, the brass accent of a mahogany cocktail bar and the distinctive bark of a tropical tree all provide visual references for pieces that radiate a refned air of old-world glamour. The Webster clutch boasts a mother-ofpearl shell shot through with emerald resin, while the Carlyle and Sterling models echo the elegance of art deco walnut furniture. The Kent clutch has a mesmerising iridescence and a wearable, desirable appeal – its textured fnish is made from crushed shell ofcuts layered to create a gradient efect. At a time when contemporary accessory design can sometimes seem derivative, Trad’s capacity for innovation and invention gives her pieces a unique edge. She also demonstrates an astute ability to combine her Middle Eastern heritage with cutting-edge fashion.

‘My personality seeps into every aspect of my designs,’ she explains. ‘My entire collection is a true refection of my identity; my aesthetic is undeniably Middle Eastern with western touches, a marriage of East and West.’ This ability to blend her cultural background with a modern outlook has put her frmly on the ascent. Trad is set to become one of the most prominent handbag designers of her generation, though it’s unlikely she’ll drop the natural modesty she has about all that she has achieved up to now. ‘I feel that as a Middle Eastern designer I have to prove myself twice as much, show proper consistency throughout the seasons, continue to innovate and push boundaries in order to be taken seriously in the Western world,’ she says. ‘Every region comes with its own set of challenges and benefts. It is up to us to make the best with what we are given.’
