TRADITIONAL ELEGANCE Inspired by the traditional craft of chair caning, Nada Ghazal has created a jewellery collection that pays tribute to the long history of Lebanese workmanship. The square rings, available in yellow and rose gold, are encrusted with champagne diamonds and were created for Beirut’s
Sursock Museum to mark an event dedicated to Lebanese cultural sustainability. Nada Ghazal, the founder and creative director of the Nada G brand, is often inspired by her family, and used her memories of the Khaizaran chairs in her family home while creating this collection. REFRESHINGLY COOL For spring/summer 2017 Alessi collaborated with a broad spectrum of individuals, including Japanese industrial designer Naoto Fukasawa. This joint effort resulted in the Nomu collection, a name that stems from the Japanese for drink. In an exploration of simplicity, Fukasawa came up with a double-wall vacuum flask and thermally insulated jug in his signature minimal style. The collection encompasses linen and cotton shirts, leather backpacks, suede shoes, including water-repellent options, silk and cashmere mix scarves, as well as headwear. We particularly like these pale trousers (682,500 LBP), worn with an orange top for a suave summer look. grc Loro Piana, AĂŻshti by the Sea, Antelias, +961 (0)4 717716, loropiana.com

CRACKING THE CODE New York fashion brand Alexander Wang has taken the barcode theme and applied it to tops for both men and women in a number of ways. The motif is paired with a leopard print on the pictured oversized women’s T-shirt (367,500 LBP), made using a special technique that involves laser cutting and welding. EXOTIC MIX The elegant new Talitha jewellery collection by Stone Paris is themed around the meeting of Eastern and Western influences. The range was inspired by founder Marie Poniatowski’s adventures in Morocco and mixes Parisian chic with North African design details such as fringing. The pendants and earrings feature stunning combinations of diamonds and 18-carat white, rose, yellow and black gold: the light and fluid collection ranges from classic pendants to more modern styles such as ear bars and micro hoops. Highlights include these 18-carat gold Talitha drop earrings (3,066,385 LBP), which are set with diamonds. js Sylvie Saliba, Quantum Tower, Charles Malek Avenue, Achrafieh, +961 (0)1 330500, stoneparis.com
Dsquared2’s menswear collection for spring/summer 2017 brings together a variety of concepts, merging rock star style with British youth subculture and an element of androgyny. Throughout, there’s a strong focus on statement jackets, including bombers, boxy acid-bleached denim and oversized styles featuring camouflage print, as seen in the pictured jacket (2,925,000 LBP). Sequins and platform boots add a final touch of pizzazz. Once again, Dsquared2 draws on different worlds to create a well-rounded collection. grc Dsquared2, Aïshti by the Sea, Antelias, +961 (0)4 717716 ext 237, dsquared2.com Save up to 8% by shopping tax free, see page 102

ebanon’s beach resorts captivate visitors summer after summer, so much so that the country’s coastline has been described as the Côte d’Azur of the Middle East. Whether you’re looking for a party atmosphere, private Jacuzzis, a place to unwind, or excellent food and drink, there is a beach resort in Lebanon to suit every taste. The Veer resort on the beautiful Jounieh coast, a 40-minute drive from Beirut, is a peaceful place to sunbathe and swim by day that transforms into a buzzing place to dance by night. Veer offers bungalows with underwater views of the pool, villas and the sumptuous Royal Suite, making it a great place to escape the hustle and bustle of the capital. Villas boast complimentary champagne,
panoramic coastal views, a secluded pool and Jacuzzi and a private barbecue area. If you’re going all out, the Royal Suite has both indoor and outdoor private Jacuzzis and a champagne butler and hookah service. For the ultimate luxury getaway, this suite must be booked to be believed. In addition to elite accommodation, Veer offers seaside entertainment throughout the summer.

There are a host of options for sunbathing, whether you’re travelling as a couple or in a larger group, including water beds and sunbed-filled huts that accommodate up to 20 people. When it comes to refreshment, Iris offers a delectable array of light bites, from skewers and wraps to the Iris Beach Tray of salads, mini burgers and other tempting nibbles. The cocktails are similarly appealing, with punches and ‘pop-tails’ on offer alongside fruity virgin juice blends and an exceptional wine list. Iris’s Electric Sundown shows, featuring elite international DJs, start at 5pm and go on into the early hours. Orchid Beach Resort in Jiyeh takes exceptional service to the extreme, with sunglasses cleaning, fresh cold towels and even a

here’s a new buzzword for discerning brides-to-be: Lebanon. The country has produced a concentrated pool of strong bridalwear designers over the past couple of decades, with younger talent adding vibrancy to the scene. Reem Acra, Georges Hobeika, Krikor Jabotian, Abed Mahfouz, Zuhair Murad, Elie Saab, Basil Soda, Tony Ward and Rani Zakhem are among the designers who have achieved widespread international recognition. The strength of Beirut as a destination in which to find ‘the dress’ is reflected in the diversity of bridalwear stores studding the streets. Having swung open the doors to its first branch over three decades ago, Noiva’s is one of the city’s original bridalwear boutiques, offering a top-to-toe wedding look consultancy service across its four locations. The equally upmarket Atelier Blanc, a more recent addition, has already made a strong name for itself. Esposa is another high-end one-stop bridal boutique, carrying international designers such as Oscar de la Renta and Marchesa as well as local talent including Zuhair Murad. If you have your heart set on a particular designer, some open the doors to their Beirut ateliers for appointments. What is it about Lebanon that has given rise to such a strong community of designers? ‘Lebanon is a very inspiring setting, especially for young creatives,’ says Krikor Jabotian, Above (from top): Atelier Blanc boutique; Elie Saab bridal spring 2017
who established his namesake label in 2009. ‘Our capital is a beautiful and chaotic blend of eastern and western cultures and this often reflects in our art and design.’ Jabotian notes that Lebanese bridalwear designers rely on traditional techniques to achieve the intricacy for which they are celebrated, while incorporating western modernity to give the
look a wholly contemporary identity. How does this translate to Jabotian’s own work? ‘Our aesthetic is intricate and dramatic,’ he says. ‘Embroidery is a key element and, by combining it with very detailed structures and elaborate volumes, we create a traditionbreaking bridal aesthetic unique to our brand.’ The signature of Beirut-based Georges Hobeika, who opened his atelier in 1995 and made his debut on the Paris couture runway in 2001, is equally multi-faceted. For autumn/ winter 2017/18, the designer focuses on what he describes in his collection notes as the ‘supernatural essence’ of the bridal fashion statement, combining nuances of tradition and the future. Standout looks include a trousertop combination with an elegant train, worn
with embellished flat shoes; and a dramatic v-neck mermaid dress featuring a skirt in multiple layers of unadorned tulle. Reem Acra was one of the first Lebanese designers to achieve international acclaim in the late 1990s, largely due to her fresh take on the wedding dress. Though she’s been based in New York since the 1980s, she’ll never abandon the aesthetic influence of her homeland. ‘My work represents east meets west, and past meets future,’ explains Acra. ‘The DNA of the brand is light and dainty, with an inherent couture feel. My designs are all about richness in fabric, considered use of colour and precise fit. I like to apply a certain mystique to the wedding gowns I create, merged with a healthy helping of glamour.

I hope that the workmanship that goes into each piece is evident from afar.’ Over the course of her two decades at the centre of the bridal fashion scene, Acra has seen many bridalwear trends come and go. What’s her definition of an on-point bride today, and how has she updated her aesthetic to keep ahead? ‘I’d say the bride of today embraces lightness and sheerness in particular,’ she says. ‘We’ve always maintained a modern, timeless approach and our spring/ summer 2017 collection represents the modern woman, offering diverse silhouettes ranging
from mermaid to ball gown. The neckline is the focal point, alongside the ever-present intricate detailing.’ Krikor Jabotian identifies a shift in the wedding tradition itself. ‘The bride of today is fun, and her wedding is a dance party,’ he says. The loosening of formality has brought about new criteria for designers to consider. ‘Contemporary bridalwear is whimsical yet practical, allowing for movement,’ observes Jabotian. ‘A good wedding dress should be like a second skin. When a bride dances, her dress must dance along with her.’

TAKING RETAIL
Lebanon’s innovative, worldclass malls offer an inspiring experience as well as top shopping. Hannah Lewis explores some of the best, from established favourites to new openings
The beauty of the shopping mall concept has always been in its variety. For those who like to sample a little (or even a lot) of everything under one roof, Lebanon’s leading malls are the ideal place to do so. The nation is known for its huge shopping centres, which provide everything from luxury labels to fast fashion, from highend cosmetics to the latest in technology, as well as great cafÊs, restaurants and entertainment for the whole family.
City Mall, the biggest commercial centre in Lebanon, has long been one of the nation’s leading shopping destinations. Located on the northern outskirts of Beirut, a short distance from the coast, the striking mall is home to over 150 retail boutiques. These include leading fashion labels such as Armani Exchange, Pepe Jeans and Tommy Hilfiger, purveyors of children’s items including Mamas & Papas and Petit Bateau, eyewear specialists such as Ray-Ban and Sunglass Hut, and many, many more. As well as world-class retail options, the mall offers visitors a wide variety of refreshment choices. Whether you’re looking for a great coffee, a cool drink, a casual bite to eat or a sit-down meal, there is something to please everyone here. Lekmet Gibran, a modern Lebanese grill, offers a delicious regional take on contemporary fast food. Various international cuisines can also be found here – from American hamburgers to Japanese sushi and Italian pizza. City Mall’s much-loved programme of entertainment events will continue throughout 2017. Aimed at visitors of all ages, these have so far included everything from transforming the mall into an Easter island dedicated to kids to performances by leading bands and standup comedians. These events are in addition to the permanent entertainment spaces,
which include a cinema showing all the latest releases, and an extensive kids’ area offering opportunities to learn and be creative, as well as a huge playground. ABC has been one of Lebanon’s most innovative retailers for over 80 years. Its two malls, as well as its three outlet locations, are some of the nation’s most visited shopping destinations, and a quick glance at their offerings makes it clear why. Fashion and accessories highlights include Kenzo, Sandro and Fendi at ABC Achrafieh, and Iro, Calvin Klein and Swarovski at ABC Dbayeh. As with any great mall, each location offers visitors a wide variety of restaurants and cafés. Both locations are home to a branch of Leila, which offers traditional Lebanese fare in modern settings. At Achrafieh, sample French pâtisserie Ladurée’s world-famous macarons. The Dbayeh branch of Magnolia Bakery is the perfect place to pick up a New-York style muffin and coffee. Both locations also offer great entertainment options. Each has a multiscreen cinema showing the latest releases, from action and drama to kids’ movies. Events are held throughout the year to celebrate festivals, and involve everything from parades and musical performances to children’s activities. The younger generation will also be delighted by the range of physical and educational activities

on offer in the extensive children’s areas at each ABC mall. The Spot is fast becoming one of Lebanon’s most dynamic retail concepts. Its two current locations, Saida and Nabatieh, are state-of-the-art malls offering an impressive array of shopping, dining and entertainment options. Leading brands including H&M, Jack & Jones and Vero Moda can be found at both locations, alongside a tasty mix of food offerings encompassing everything from healthy salads and traditional Lebanese
platters to frozen yoghurt and candy floss. Both Spot Saida and Spot Nabatieh also offer entertainment options for the whole family, including cinemas showing the latest movies in various genres, and kids’ centres that offer laser tag, arcade games and indoor play areas. The Spot Choueifat, scheduled to open in May 2017, is the first of three upcoming new locations for this dynamic shopping concept. Continuing with the winning formula, this architecturally innovative space will offer everything visitors have come to expect from The Spot, including 96 retail stores, 21 coffee shops and restaurants, a hypermarket, a kids’ playground and amusement centre, and an impressive 10 cinema screens. As with the other branches, events held during the year will celebrate occasions as diverse as Halloween and Eid al-Fitr; these have previously featured store discounts, live entertainment and more. In an increasingly digital age, discerning customers demand more than just a store when they go shopping, and malls’ everythingunder-one-roof concept is perfectly placed to take the retail experience to the next level. City Mall, ABC and The Spot are perfect examples, presenting multifaceted spaces where the latest purchases are found alongside great food and entertainment. As the mall concept continues to grow and expand, the future of retail in Lebanon looks even brighter
