Sara is based in the city and her colourful and imaginative style made her the perfect choice for this cover, which refects our feature about some of London’s most interesting markets (see page 46). The cover shows a market stall flled with London-themed items including an umbrella in the shape of the Shard, a Millennium Eye cake and a Big Ben grandfather clock. MARKET VALUE From the famous Portobello Road with its antique stalls to the gourmet delights at Borough, London’s markets are unmissable, says Ginger Rose Clark

arkets are central to life in the city. Daily and weekly enterprises are thriving; some are centuries old, while others are new to the scene. All provide memorable experiences, whether you’re looking for a quick lunch at a street food stall or have time to browse the goods selected by specialist antique dealers. These markets also provide a snapshot of the diverse neighbourhoods within the city and visitors are sure to have a memorable experience, wherever you go. Portobello Road Market could quite easily be classifed as the quintessential London market. It is known around the world, and is popular with visitors and locals alike. A market has been 89 / 103

Stalls are set up here during most of the week, with the full market open on Fridays and Saturdays from 8am to 6.30pm.

SPARKLE AND SHINE Designer Markus Lupfer brings a welcome dose of fun to the fashion scene. He talks to Sally McIlhone about his latest collections and his inspirations

or devotees of fashion, German designer Markus Lupfer needs no introduction. He is the man who revitalised knitwear, turning it from the bulky, drab top layer one reaches for on a cold day to a fun fashion staple. Famed for his jumpers adorned with sequined lips, animals and ice cream, he is now known the world over, and is introducing other standout elements to his collections. His autumn/winter 2015/16 collection is flled with stunning tapestry print minidresses, skirts and bomber jackets, and features innovative tailoring along with lashings of metallics. ‘It is based around a secret garden idea,’ Lupfer explains. ‘There are woodland characters, garden gnomes and forbidden fruit. We have focused on a darker colour palette and opulent fabrics.’ These more brooding shades give the collection a maturity that is balanced with youthful accessories such as woollen hats adorned with cats’ ears, pom poms and jewelled details. When asked about his favourite pairings for
Beyoncé, Rihanna and Madonna have been seen wearing Markus Lupfer’s clothing designs autumn and winter, he highlights his sunglasses printed with images of daisies and the ‘oversized foral jacquard parka’ which look ‘really special’ together. Lupfer attributes his enthusiasm for clothing design to his grandmother who ‘was a huge infuence, and inspired me to get into fashion.’ ‘She was a very glamorous lady and her sister was a dressmaker and it was always exciting to visit her place.’ Lupfer decided to study fashion design at the University of Westminster in London where he graduated with a frst-class honours degree. His fnal year collection was sold in Koh Samui, one of London’s most notable boutiques for new design

talent and, just four years later, he was awarded the British Fashion Council’s New Generation award. Having lived and been inspired by Germany and the UK, Lupfer praises both countries for shaping his creative eye, with Germany infuencing his technical skills and the UK providing him with a frm foundation in the design process. One of Lupfer’s most recognisable motifs is the open pair of pouting sequined lips which developed from his habit of signing of his letters with little hand-drawn lips, signifying a kiss. ‘This was the starting point of the sequin lips,’ Lupfer explains. The lips also tap into Lupfer’s aesthetic, which he describes as ‘contemporary, wearable and with a little bit of humour’, and he sees his clients as being ‘young, fun, looking for an adventure’ and ‘with a sense of humour.’ In particular, Lupfer’s knitwear items embody this youthful, vibrant energy and many contain ‘girly’ tonguein-cheek references. Sequined jumpers from the spring/summer 2015 collection say ‘Crush’ and ‘Mermaid’, for example, and such pieces are considered by Lupfer to be design pieces that are special but can be worn every day. By cornering the market in wearable fun fashion that also hints at elegance, Lupfer has caught the eye of some highprofle people. He says that actress Britt Robertson was spotted ‘looking gorgeous’ in a piece from the current collection, and that Above (both): Markus Lupfer autumn/winter 2015/16

Beyoncé, Rihanna and Madonna have also been seen in his designs. ‘It is always so exciting to see people in our clothes, especially young and exciting talent,’ he says. Even after winning awards and seeing his clothing worn by A-list celebrities, Lupfer is determined to help designers who are looking to start their careers. Lupfer describes his proudest achievement as ‘supporting a small group of designers in Ethiopia to develop their collections and help to start their careers.’ Helping to nurture these unknown designers is an experience that Lupfer goes on to describe as Above: Markus Lupfer autumn/winter 2015/16
‘really rewarding.’ It is not often that an internationally acclaimed designer takes time out from their busy schedule to think about future generations of designers, especially those from less privileged backgrounds, and this is testament to Lupfer’s character: he may be fun-focused when it comes to his designs, but he is also compassionate and wants to give something back. For now though, his focus is on his spring/summer 2016 sunglasses and shoe collections: ‘I am rather excited about both!’ And, unsurprisingly, so are we markuslupfer.com

TABLE TALK The frst meal of the day is enjoying a makeover. Katie Muxworthy tucks in to some of the tastiest breakfast and brunch dishes in the city
From pastries and Middle Eastern dishes to healthy options and contemporary twists on the classic full English breakfast, the frst meal of the day comes in many forms in the capital. The traditional English breakfast, or fry-up, comprises bacon, sausages and eggs, which are typically served with fried bread or toast, fried or grilled tomatoes, fried mushrooms and sometimes black pudding or hash browns. According to the English Breakfast Society, the dish dates globalblue.com
back to the early 19th century when the British gentry considered breakfast to be an important social event and an excellent way to show of their wealth and the abundant produce from their estates. While a traditional fry-up is still a national favourite, chefs in the capital are becoming increasingly creative over breakfast. The good news is that you don’t have to be an early riser to savour London’s tastiest trend as breakfast and brunch options are served in many places until midday.

DISHOOM Morning meals just got a lot more exotic thanks to cult brunch destination Dishoom in Shoreditch. This retro-stylish Indian restaurant gives wellknown British dishes an eastern twist. Try its interpretation of the classic full English breakfast, which sees spiced scrambled eggs served on toast with bacon, sausages and vine tomatoes. Or start the day with a signature
Dishoom naan roll, baked in a tandoor oven, stufed with cream cheese, chilli jam and fresh herbs and served with additional fllings such as handmade Shropshire pork sausages, bacon and eggs. For a lighter option, order a breakfast lassi, a fortifying take on the refreshing Indian yoghurt drink, made with mango, banana and oats. Cook, restaurateur and food writer Bill Granger was a pioneer of communal tables when he introduced the idea at his eatery in Sydney about 20 years ago. He set up his frst British restaurant in Notting Hill in 2011 and several other branches have since been launched. The Notting Hill space refects the spirit that characterises all of his restaurants; it is warm and inviting whatever the weather, the menu is always distinctive and the dishes are full of favour. Those feeling virtuous can start the day with freshly squeezed juices and muesli with almond milk, coconut yoghurt and fruit compote. Other highlights include the fantastic ricotta hotcakes served with banana and honeycomb butter, and the Full Aussie – scrambled eggs on sourdough toast with bacon, cumin-roasted tomatoes, chestnut mushrooms and chipolatas. NEXT The latest womenswear collection from British high street favourite Next combines texture and colour with sophisticated style. A wide-reaching colour palette spans jewel tones of forest green and blue, icy pastels, statement winter brights and metallic splashes. There’s a pleasing 1970s feel in the form of pussy-bow blouses, ft-andfare dresses and slouchy tailored suits. For of-duty days, we love these elegant high-waisted jeans which can be paired with chic and understated knits. Next, 508-520 Oxford Street, London W1C 1NX, +44 (0)84 4844 5319, next.co.uk

MY NEIGHBOURHOOD: DINNY HALL Jewellery designer Dinny Hall studied at London’s prestigious art and design college Central Saint Martins. She frst came to prominence when her entire graduate collection was bought by the famous department store Liberty. Over 30 years, Dinny has become known worldwide for her beautiful yet wearable jewellery. Here, she talks about her two favourite areas of London with Hannah Lewis dinnyhall.com

‘My two favourite areas of London are Notting Hill and Islington. I’ve lived in both, and this is why I chose to open my two stores in these parts of the city. When visiting one of my boutiques, look out for the Cushion Hoops from my latest collection, of which I’m particularly fond. ‘There are many fabulous fashion stores in Notting Hill, including Helmut Lang, and Sub Couture for well-priced staples. Golborne Road Market, an ofshoot of Portobello Road Market, is where all the best second-hand furniture stores can be found. ‘When I eat out, I go to
Santo on Portobello Road, a Mexican restaurant with charisma, divine margaritas made with fresh kiwi or raspberry, and very good, authentic food. The café at 202, on Westbourne Grove, is next to my store and is a great meeting place for lunch – do try the risottos. You’ll never see so many fashion executives and designers, flm directors and actors eating lunch in the same place and in such a relaxed, laid-back atmosphere. Tavola on Westbourne Grove is chef Alistair Littles’s delicatessen. He does the best pesto in London and the most delicious

seasonal soups, which are all made on the premises. ‘The Grocer on Elgin, on Elgin Crescent, sells fantastic bread and meals that you can take out, my favourite being the south-east Asian prawn curry. ‘BeautyWorksWest is a friendly beauty sanctuary. Staf members are experts in up-tothe-minute beauty treatments, all carried out in luxury surroundings. The owner Suzy is inspirational. ‘When in Islington, go to Tallulah on Cross Street for a personal ftting of lovely lingerie, rest a while in the churchyard at St Mary’s Upper Street and then cut through to Essex Road and browse the auction rooms at Criterion Auctioneers. ‘I love to walk in the grandiose Kensington Gardens, which has such lovely trees, as well as around Primrose Hill and Regents Park, where
there’s a hidden garden. I also enjoy wandering around places such as Bunhill Fields where the English poet William Blake is buried. ‘The best view in London is from a corner of Hampstead Heath, near the Spaniards Inn, where you can see the whole of the city. ‘The best-kept secret is Melt on Ledbury Road which specialises in handmade chocolates. I recommend trying the raspberry chocolate, the mint with dark milk chocolate, or the white chocolate with lemon and thyme.’

TRANSLATIONS РУССКИЙ ПЕРЕВОД 46: Market Value
PHOTO: CHRIS BROWN CC BY-SA 2.0

Если вы поклонник независимых магазинов и оригинальных товаров, тогда вас ждет много приятных сюрпризов и эмоций. portobelloroad.co.uk, bermondseysquare.net/ bermondsey-antiques-market, broadwaymarket.co.uk, netilmarket.tumblr.com, columbiaroad.info, greenwichmarketlondon.com, boroughmarket.org.uk

New globalblue.com

Как, впрочем, и мы с вами. markuslupfer.com 88: When You Shop The World, Shop Tax Free

46: Market Value

globalblue.com
