Her eyecatching artwork has previously been commissioned by Crabtree and Evelyn, Marc by Marc Jacobs and Vogue, among others. Her bright, dramatic style makes her a perfect illustrator for this cover, inspired by our feature on page 38 about the London designers championing a new look in interiors. Chocky Hendreth is a modern menswear label specialising in the classic Oxford shirt. Right from the start, in 2012, founders – and childhood friends – Ben Norville and Joe Bullmore were adamant that everything about the shirts should be made in England. As a result, the buttons can be traced to a small workshop on Brick Lane, the cotton fabric comes from a weaver in south London, and it’s all put together in a small factory in Aldgate. th

PATTERN OF SUCCESS

When it comes to injecting new life into your home, London’s young print designers have everything you need, says Hannah Lewis Left: Ercol chair and plates available at Darkroom

A

quick glance at any social network or style blog is all it takes to show that the world is having a love affair with interiors right now. Not content with beautifying ourselves, we are also giving our homes a makeover, and the taste makers are just as fascinated by the newest home collections as the latest catwalk shows. When it comes to reinventing your living space for 2016, a bold print can make all the 83 /

difference, and many of the most exciting young print designers call London home. With a main store on Lamb’s Conduit Street in Bloomsbury, as well as a shop-in-shop in Selfridges, relative newcomer Darkroom (it opened in 2009) is already an established presence on London’s design scene. The flagship offers a range of accessible, beautiful design from across the world, from soft furnishings and textiles to Above: Darkroom store

It seems that no one is immune to the pull of prints – so it’s definitely time to get decorating furniture, displayed against stark black walls. Founders Rhonda Drakeford and Lulu RoperCaldbeck champion emerging designers, with many exclusive pieces and special commissions available. Drakeford and Roper-Caldbeck also produce their own Darkroom collection, which comprises some of the most covetable items in a truly well-stocked boutique. Between them, they have backgrounds in

graphic design, interiors, textiles and fashion, and this and their shared passion for travel provides a solid foundation for their interiors line. The two produce cushions, rugs, throws, plates, mirrors and much more, with print at the heart of what they do. ‘Our plan was to create something very different – something bolder, brighter and much more full-on’, explains Roper-Caldbeck. The signature Darkroom aesthetic is bold and

graphic, featuring geometric shapes and strong colours. Its prints are varied but always eye catching, with everything from layered tribalinspired etchings to the simple but powerful use of monochrome. Across town, in one of London’s coolest quarters, lies the flagship of insider favourite House of Hackney. The historic architecture characteristic of the Shoreditch area proved the perfect fit for the husband-and-wife team behind the label, which can certainly lay claim to one of the most stylish

stores in London. The boutique is decked out wall to wall in the bold prints for which House of Hackney has become famous, making it a testament to the brand’s unique and faultless style. Launched in 2010, House of Hackney was begun with the aim to ‘take the beige out of interiors’. Founders Javvy M Royle and Frieda Gormley were also adamant that the brand be a truly British one. As such, it proudly supports local industries, working with the country’s best manufacturers.

The best evidence that furnishings are the new fashion is the number of catwalk designers turning their hand to interiors Above (both): House of Hackney boutique

The aesthetic, too, is proudly British, albeit with a strong contemporary edge, and the prints themselves are inspired by the nation’s cultural heritage. Bold florals show the clear influence of Victorian artist William Morris, one of the most important figures in the history of British textiles. Another favourite is the Hackney Empire print, which depicts anthropomorphised animals, whose name pays tribute to the London borough where the brand was born. Perhaps the best evidence that furnishings are the new fashion is the growing number of catwalk designers turning their hands to interiors. One of the most exciting to launch in spring/summer 2016 is the collaboration between House of Holland and Habitat. The former, the label of effortlessly cool British

Many of the most exciting print designers in the world call London home designer Henry Holland, is known for its fresh and playful designs, as well as its bold use of colour and print. Habitat, meanwhile, is an iconic British name which has been committed to making stylish home design accessible to a wide audience since its beginnings in 1964. The limited-edition collection will adapt key elements of the current House of Holland collection and reinterpret these prints across textiles and upholstery. ‘It’s been a

lot of fun translating our spring/ summer 2016 collection for a different creative industry, taking our 1970s psychedelic, hallucinatory prints from the catwalk and working with new materials and techniques specifically for the home,’ says Holland. It’s certain to prove just as popular as his clothing, and likely to gain him new admirers along the way. A smart move for both House of Holland and Habitat, the project is more than that for Holland himself: it’s personal. ‘I’m so excited to be working on my first interiors range … I recently bought my first house and am really getting into soft furnishings these days, so luckily this project has come just at the right time.’ With no one immune to the pull of prints, it’s time to get decorating Above (clockwise from top left): two House of Holland catwalk looks; one of the fabrics from the brand’s collaboration with Habitat, all spring/summer 2016

London’s West End may be home to some of the world’s biggest luxury brands, but those in the know are heading east, to Redchurch Street. Ruairidh Pritchard explores

THE STREET

In the world’s most fashionable cities, there are a handful of streets with truly distinctive style credentials – and London is no exception. While Oxford Street is a high-street fashion lover’s dream,

and Mayfair is home to luxurious Mount Street and Bond Street, London’s fashion and arts scene is seeing a new name come to the fore: Redchurch Street, in the city’s edgy East End.

scene has put it firmly in the spotlight again for all the right reasons. The street has been home to some of the most prominent names of the celebrated Young British Artists movement – both Tracey Emin and Sarah Lucas worked here during the early 1990s – as well as a canvas for some of the most innovative and eye-catching street art in the city. Not just artists but all manner of creatives have flocked to the area, including those in fashion, an echo of Redchurch Street’s

The street has a long and fascinating history. It began life as a narrow lane connecting Shoreditch and Bethnal Green, but by the late 17th century, the first residences had been built along its length. A surge in development in the 1730s produced terraced houses for workers from the city’s thriving silk and garment industries, some of which survive to this day. Since then Redchurch Street has seen lows and highs, but its more recent reinvention as the epicentre of east London’s modern art and design

silk-weaving origins. Nowadays the street is famous for hosting one of London’s best selections of cutting-edge international fashion brands and local labels. Redchurch Street is a great place to discover new names. To the western end of the street, French fashion label APC and multi-brand store Aimé bring their own takes on minimalist Parisian chic to east

London. Nearby is Swedish denim expert Nudie Jeans, as well as British heritage label Sunspel, one of the best brands for luxury basics. The area has begun to attract some of the world’s biggest brands, too. Italian label Versus, the directional offshoot of fashion behemoth Versace, recently opened a store on Redchurch Street, while American fashion giant J Crew opened a

new men’s store late last year. Such is the influx of international big brands that commentators have described Redchurch Street as ‘the East End’s Bond Street’, and ‘the most fashionable street in London’. Conceptual multi-brand boutique Hostem opened its doors on the street six years ago and has since become something of a Redchurch Street icon. Stocking some of the best in innovative international brands and directional labels, including Comme des Garçons, Dries Van Noten and Loewe, the store – in temporary headquarters on nearby Old Nichol Street for summer 2016 – is a firm favourite among London’s fashion elite, while Tracey Neuls’ eponymous boutique stocks some of most distinctive and desirable Above (clockwise from top): Allpress cofee shop; Albion café; its cooked breakfast; a vintage beauty look from The Painted Lady

contemporary footwear in London. While the incredible array of fashion on offer is impossible to ignore, shopping isn’t the only thing for which Redchurch Street is becoming known. Beauty parlours and barbers are also making their mark on the street. A firm favourite of the city’s best groomed gentlemen, Murdock moved into the street four years ago and offers a range of services for men, from haircuts to beard reshaping and manicures. The Painted Lady, a vintage-themed beauty parlour, offers a range of 60s and 70s-inspired hair and make-up packages, while Barber & Parlour combines a vast array of both men’s and women’s services in its refurbished warehouse space on the corner of Redchurch Street and Club Row.

Aside from fashion and beauty, Redchurch Street has coffee shops and cafés that are some of the most popular in east London, thanks to their focus on artisanal coffee and relaxed good food. Among them is Allpress, which is known for its ethically sourced producer-toroastery coffee beans. Another place to linger is Albion, one of the city’s most popular brunch spots. Whether it’s the draw of pampering beauty parlours and barbers, some of east London’s best coffee shops or the eclectic mix of international and home-grown fashion talent, it’s impossible to resist the allure of Redchurch Street. And with more arrivals due this year, its new-found status as one of the best shopping streets in London seems certain to endure

CAFÉ SOCIETY Afternoon tea is a fne British tradition, and one that’s constantly being updated. Katie Muxworthy seeks out some of the most imaginative versions in the capital

No one is quite sure of the origins of afternoon tea, but the credit for making it the social occasion it became belongs to a 19th-century Duchess of Bedford. With the introduction of gaslight in wealthy homes making it possible to dine later in the evening, mid-afternoon hunger became an issue. The Duchess’s solution was a pot of tea and a light snack in the privacy of her rooms. She began inviting friends to join her, and a new social occasion was born. globalblue.com

A traditional afternoon tea includes a selection of fresh ‘fnger’ sandwiches, followed by scones with cream and jam, and a selection of cakes. This is accompanied by a pot of tea, or occasionally a small glass of champagne. Today, London ofers many distinctive modern takes on the classic, featuring everything from exotic loose-leaf tea favours to Japaneseinfuenced gateaux, meaning there’s something to tempt everyone into an indulgent afternoon treat.

CAKE HOLE CAFÉ Cake Hole Café is one of London’s best-kept secrets, despite its location on Columbia Road, which plays host to a hugely popular fower market every Sunday. The reason is surely the fact it’s at the back of a boutique, Vintage Heaven, beyond displays of retro teapots and 1950s glassware. Those who do manage to fnd their way to the intimate café – which, like the shop, is open

at weekends only – won’t be able to resist the home-baked cakes, and scones with clotted cream and jam, as well as the excellent cofee and wide range of speciality teas. A must-try is the Elderfower and White tea, or the Earl Grey Bluestar, an exquisite variation on the classic blend. DRINK, SHOP & DO At the weekend, this laidback cocktail bar-cum-café serves up a proper afternoon tea, a perfect complement to the charming retro décor. A classic selection of sandwiches, including ham hock, parsley and mustard mayo, egg mayonnaise with spring onion and chives, and smoked salmon, cream cheese and chrain (a spicy globalblue.com

horseradish sauce) is followed by home-made fruit scones with clotted cream and jams, and a selection of miniature cakes. Those who want to make it even more indulgent can also have a glass of champagne or one of the café’s signature Bellinis. J&A CAFÉ

Tucked away at the back of a courtyard between Clerkenwell Road and Great Sutton Street, J&A Café occupies the ground foor of a former diamond-cutting factory, and its industrial-chic décor of bare brick, metal pendant lights and exposed beams ofers a relaxed modern setting for a traditional afternoon tea. It is run by two sisters, whose passion for home cooking translates into a menu of simple, beautifully prepared food made from carefully sourced ingredients. Smoked salmon on freshly baked soda bread, big pots of tea and tempting cakes are among the highlights. J&A Café, 1-4 Sutton Lane, London EC1M 5PU, +44 (0)20 7490 2992, jandacafe.com

LANKA With its traditional French patisserie and fne Ceylon teas, Lanka provides a distinctive take on afternoon tea. The selection of cakes is inspiring; 20 or so diferent types are baked daily, including the Japanese-infuenced green tea chocolate gateau. Other favourites include the green tea strawberry cake, salted caramel tart and the white chocolate gateau with azuki beans. Accompany your chosen slice of cake with one of the café’s loose-leaf teas from Sri Lanka, which includes varieties scented with fower petals. This charming tearoom is run by Masayuki Hara, who has worked in various Michelinstarred restaurants. Lanka, 9 Goldhurst Terrace, London NW6 3HX, +44 (0)20 7625 3366, lanka-uk.com

JOHNSTONS OF ELGIN PHOTO: MONTANA LOWERY

Luxury Scottish fine knitwear specialist Johnstons of Elgin opened its first London store in December 2015. Located in the heart of Mayfair, the boutique showcases the brand’s heritage with photographs of its mills, cones of cashmere, and a folding table with an inlaid brass tape-measure and a magnifying lamp so that customers can inspect the quality and knit of the garments, just as it’s done at the brand’s mills. The company has been owned by just two families since it was established in 1797 – the Johnstons, followed by the Harrisons, who still own

it – and its menswear, womenswear and home interior lines continue to showcase its traditional craftsmanship and Scottish heritage. Johnstons of Elgin, 77 New Bond Street, London W1S 1RY, +44 (0)20 7629 8983, johnstonscashmere.com

One of London’s trendiest hairdressers, Blue Tit opened its first salon in up-and-coming area Dalston in 2011. Its founders believe that having one’s hair done should be an experience and not a chore, so each of the salon’s six London locations is designed with its own unique character. The Dalston branch features wooden floors and exposed brick walls, with houseplants dotted about the place.

MY LONDON: JUSTIN RHODES Elliot Rhodes is a London-based

accessories company specialising in customisable belts made from interchangeable parts. Launched in 2004, it now has three busy boutiques across the capital. Ximena Daneri talked to founder and creative director Justin Rhodes to get his top tips for exploring London elliotrhodes.com

‘It’s hard to pinpoint one favourite place in a city as diverse as London – there are so many fascinating parts to discover in a vastly eclectic mix of locations. We’re lucky as our stores are all in quite differing areas of the city – Chelsea, Marylebone and Covent Garden … there are bits of all of them that are amazing. ‘I really like the recently developed area of Brewer Street for menswear. Woolrich * p.70 has a lovely store there, and there is a cool hat store around the corner on Sherwood Street called Laird & Co Hatters * p.70. Nearby, you cannot miss out on tea, lunch or a cocktail at the Ham Yard Hotel * p.70, and if you fancy a fun night out hit the luxurious bowling alley in the basement. ‘Head next to Chelsea where the Saatchi Gallery * p.64 is a must for contemporary art

– there are things you’ll love and things you’ll hate, but that’s all part of the charm! ‘I often sneak away from the Chelsea store for tea at Poilâne. The fireside table is my favourite, and the pastries are pretty good as well. ‘Over by our St Christopher’s Place store, meander through Marylebone Lane and discover the wonderful Button Queen store and stop for a nibble at the newly opened Ivy Café * p.68. ‘For a light snack, a visit to Polpo in Duke of York Square is perfect, but for an evening

drink I do have a soft spot for cocktails. You can’t beat the Library Bar * p.65 at the Lanesborough hotel for a true example of one of the most beautiful yet inviting hotel bars in the world. ‘I have recently discovered Aux Merveilleux cake shop on the Old Brompton Road. It specialises in to-die-for meringue-based cakes. ‘The Gate restaurant in Hammersmith is wonderful. I’m always keen to try different cuisines and the food here is so delicious. ‘When friends visit, I take them to a concert at the Royal Albert Hall * p.64 – the appeal lies in the venue as much as in the entertainment. ‘Take a long stroll from Covent Garden into the city via all the small lanes, taking time to admire the beautiful old architecture and absorb the

history of London. ‘The view across the whole expanse of London from the top of the Shard * p.65 makes you realise just how vast and beautiful London is. The one from the top of Hampstead Heath is pretty impressive, too. ‘Use your legs and just walk. Keep away from the main thoroughfares and see what you can discover. As you cross from area to area you’ll sense the change of vibe. If you have to drive, a Vespa is the only way to feel truly liberated.’

TRANSLATIONS РУССКИЙ ПЕРЕВОД 38: Pattern Of Success

globalblue.com
