Stormy Weather

Inspired by climate change and earth’s increasingly unpredictable weather patterns, Dutch jeweller Bibi van der Velden has launched the Forces of Nature collection. Each design makes a powerful, yet beautiful and elegant, statement about the extreme weather phenomena we now face. From a white quartz and sterling silver ring inspired by a melting ice cap to the pictured Tornado earrings, this jewellery is certain to spark conversation. The inner and outer sections of the earrings move dynamically within one another, allowing the diamonds to perfectly catch the light – and the statement design to catch attention. Founded a mere three years ago, Wandler has quickly become known for its must-have handbag designs. Last year the Dutch brand introduced footwear for the first time: this season it builds on this new product category with the introduction of the Elza sandal (pictured, €425), a summer take on the existing Isa style. Defined by its simple silhouette, the sandal comprises slim straps and a mid heel, and comes in four different colourways: ivy mix, rose quartz mix, punch and pistachio. Other highlights of the season include the introduction of the Ava tote in three sizes. GRC De Bijenkorf, Coolsingel 105, 3012 AG Rotterdam, +31 (0)88 245 3333, wandler.com H FOR MAP GO TO PAGE 40

IN BRIEF Mr Marvis recently opened its debut store in Amsterdam, its home city. The brand sets outs to create the perfect shorts across four styles: the original, the piqué, the swim and the sport. They can all be discovered at the store on Oude Looiersstraat

ABOUT TIME To mark the 15th anniversary of Hublot’s Big Bang model, the brand has unveiled the Big Bang Integral. The new timepiece retains the defining features of the Big Bang, adapted to incorporate a fully integrated metal bracelet. For example, the redesigned case features pushers that echo the original ones from 2005. Aside from the bezel’s black composite resin lugs and the rubber moulded over the crown, the Big Bang Integral is made solely from one material: choose from titanium, black scratch-proof ceramic, or Hublot’s exclusive King Gold alloy in distinctive red. Prices start from €20,700. GRC Hublot, PC Hooftstraat 142, 1071 BN Amsterdam, +31 (0)20 238 4791, hublot.com H FOR MAP GO TO PAGE 36

WHAT’S YOUR SIZE? This year Size? marks its 20th anniversary. The trainer retailer, founded in 2000, curates an edit of niche footwear styles and brands, and is celebrating with a series of special projects throughout the year. For spring/summer expect exclusive collaborations with brands such as Adidas Originals, Vans, Converse, New Balance, Puma, Saucony and Nike, on the pictured Nike Air Max 95. Visit the Amsterdam store to shop not only footwear, but also clothing and accessories. GRC Size?, 128 Kalverstraat, 1012 PK Amsterdam, +31 (0)20 722 0810, sizeofficial.nl H FOR MAP GO TO PAGE 30

IN THE BAG Introduced last year, Salvatore Ferragamo’s Boxyz bag returns this season: the Gancini Boxyz bag (pictured, €1,790) features the brand’s monogram with added bursts of colour. The trapeze-shaped Boxyz further references the monogram in the top handle and clasp closure modelled after the brand’s Gancini motif, while the addition of a lock and key provides extra security. Creative director Paul Andrew designed the Boxyz with 21st-century living in mind and created a bag that is practical, bold and stylish; this season’s take is likely to fast become a new favourite. Dutch design is known for wit and humour as well as quality. Ginger Rose Clark profiles the homeware names with personality To say that Dutch design has personality is an understatement. Its playful side is widely recognised, and brings humour to furniture and objects alike: names such as Droog and Studio Job have gained global reach for projects and objects that suggest unlimited imagination. Take Marcel Wanders: past pieces by the acclaimed designer

include a chair that mimics a twisted balloon sculpture, a crystal chandelier peeking out from within a bell and a collection in collaboration with Alessi based on the colourful, fantastical world of the circus. 45

Given this well-defined identity, no visit to the Netherlands would be complete without picking up a piece or two from the country’s homeware brands. &Klevering has three concept stores in Amsterdam where it sells products by international brands as well its own line of products under the &k Amsterdam label. ‘Dutch design is known to stand out and be bold.

The Dutch strive to put an original twist to every design,’ says Judith Uijtendaal, a member of the &k Amsterdam design team. The Dutch capital is very much rooted in what defines the country’s design aesthetic, she explains. ‘We are a quirky and young company which puts its focus on making funny and memorable gift items. If it puts a smile on someone’s face it’s a success.’ Collections span everything from lighting, tableware and candle holders to decorative objects – defining design characteristics include vibrant

colours and a love of animal motifs. Among the highlights for spring/summer 2020 is a collaboration with artist Lillian Farag. ‘We fell in love with Lillian’s work through social media,’ says Uijtendaal. ‘Her marbling technique fits our collection perfectly. Together we decided that our custom bamboo plates and mugs were the best fit for her print. It turned out to be the perfect match.’ The result of the collaboration is a joyful series of plates and mugs finished with a colourful handdipped marble effect.

Dutch designs cleverly combine function, style and joy

Above: Pols Potten spring/summer 2020

Another Dutch name to know is Pols Potten, founded in 1986. The brand’s designs reveal a love of materials and colour, combined with a desire to transcend seasons; Pols Potten creates contemporary objects designed to last. A dose of humour appears in hand-shaped chairs, a bright pink decorative palm leaf or an upside-down bunny moneybox. The brand works with a range of designers, many of whom are also Dutch, on designs that channel Pols Potten’s vision. Examples include Minke van Voorthuizen’s take on lamps and Norman Trapman’s candle holder. Visit the colourful world of Pols Potten at the brand’s store on Amsterdam’s KNSM island: here you can browse the brand’s sofas, lighting, tableware and more, as well as enjoying art and design exhibitions. The practical playfulness of Dutch design is also very much in evidence in the collections of Doing Goods, a brand stocked by De Bijenkorf. ‘At Doing Goods we

believe that humour and fun is key to all that we create,’ says Veronique Jilisen, who takes care of the label’s marketing and PR. Designs are largely inspired by travel, she explains. ‘Small and unexpected things during our journeys influence how we view the world and our place in it. Nothing is more captivating than to experience various cultures, meet people and learn about their

history.’ She describes the process as ‘a love for treasure hunting’, thanks to which the brand’s designs collectively form a veritable cabinet of curiosities. Similar to &k Amsterdam’s themes, animals feature prominently. As well as creating lovely pieces for the home, doing good is – as the Doing Goods name suggests – integral to the brand’s DNA and it works closely with a family business in India. Together, they built a workshop where products are created under fair working conditions. Doing Goods’ signature styles, including Tapis Amis, a collection of adorable animal rugs handmade out of wool, are produced here. Other Doing Goods favourites include brass items such as hooks, plates and boxes, made using traditional techniques, and a range of textiles for the home, including pillows and throws featuring vibrant motifs in vegetable dyes. ‘We wish to bring a little happiness and cheer to people’s lives near and far, by making fun and beautiful home accessories,’ says Jilisen. This philosophy of sparking joy seems to be a constant: Dutch design’s ability to not take itself too seriously makes it unique. Much loved names like Pols Potten, &k Amsterdam and Doing Goods, who are quick to describe themselves as quirky or having a sense of humour, cleverly combine function, style and fun. In their own individual ways they have each mastered the art of bringing poetry and wit to interiors Above (from top): Doing Goods Coolio Crocodile rug; the brand’s cushions are coloured with vegetable dyes

RED WING SHOES Named after the southern Minnesota town of the same name, Red Wing Shoes was established 115 years ago to create durable, long-lasting footwear for those employed in the physical trades. Though today they are worn and loved by everyone with a keen eye for design, the hard-wearing leathers ensure the styles on offer stand the test of time. A reboot of a classic, this dusty pink incarnation of the Moc Toe boot is a new release for spring/summer 2020. Accented with the yellow and brown laces associated with the brand, these are an essential purchase for summer city strolls. SM

T-shirts, shorts and weekend bags in classic navy and army greens are accented with lighter yellows, mints and gentle blues. This spring/summer collection does not only provide for the warmer weather – pieces such as hooded sweatshirts, crew-neck jumpers and light varsity jackets will help you stay warm on cooler evenings and transition smoothly into autumn. Visit the brand’s Amsterdam clubhouse to peruse the collection, and enjoy a coffee or a beer while the staff help you curate your latest look. FM
