SHE’S SO MODERN Max Mara’s latest collection has a decidedly modernist look compared with the neutral tones and understated sophistication for which it has become known. The trademark sleek and simple styles remain, but the use of sheer and shimmery fabrics, metallics and vivid colour blocking in electric blue, tangerine and violet adds an exciting edge. Satin slips, slinky separates and minimalist tailored jackets provide a fresh approach to luxury layering, making Max Mara our go-to brand for unequivocal city-chic style this summer. gl Max Mara, Mitropoleos 54, 546 23 Thessaloniki, +30 23 1028 4123, maxmara.com * for map go to page 52 globalblue.com

Styles inspired by classic Greek goddesses have maintained their enduring allure for centuries, writes Frances Wasem

PHOTO: EvErETT COllECTiOn/rEX

IMMORTAL APPEAL When Jennifer Lawrence walked onto the 2014 Golden Globes red carpet she was wearing a Grecianinspired white chifon dress. Lawrence’s flm-star presence was beautifully complemented by the substance and poise that only a goddess dress can give; this traditional Grecian costume indicates sophisticated, womanly style. The beauty of mythical Helen of Troy, resplendent in her classical Greek dress, was said to have started wars that laid cities to waste and it is perhaps that combination of ultimate femininity and absolute power that makes the style so enduring. As well, of course, as how it makes us feel. The original Greek dress, the chiton, was made of wool or linen, draped on the body and falling to the ankle. The fabric was clasped at the shoulders and the skirt was sometimes pleated. 60 /

63

A palla (shawl) was draped over one shoulder, leaving the other arm free. The chiton created an illusion of height, due to the diagonal line leading up the body. It was designed to skim the body, to keep the wearer cool, but still be feminine. Marchesa designer Georgina Chapman attributes the enduring appeal of the goddess dress to its fattering shape. ‘Draping frames the feminine shape very well,’ she says. ‘It hugs in the right places to defne the form, but it is still relaxed in its overall structure.’ The goddess dress is a recurring fashion trend. Mariano Fortuny designed the Delphos gown around 1907 and it remained popular for decades. This long, pleated dress owed its origins to Greece. Each dress was made out of a single piece of silk and Fortuny developed a special pleating process that meant the silk hugged the body. Lef: Elizabeth Taylor wears a Grecian-inspired dress in Elephant Walk, 1954

30 | F E AT U R E S

But the best-known Grecianinspired designer was Madame Grès. The Parisian designer, who demonstrated a mastery of intricate drapery and impeccable cutting, opened her fashion house in 1942. Grès, who had trained as a sculptor, created elegant couture evening dresses in jersey silk. Many modern designers have been inspired by her designs, including Haider Ackermann, Azzedine Alaïa and Georgina Chapman, who says that Grès ‘treated draping fabric like she would sculpting stone. Her timeless designs still resonate today.’ In 2012 there was a resurrection of Grecian-style dresses, no doubt due to the Olympic Games. Greek

designer Sophia Kokosalaki shows one curated collection a year of draped and pleated dresses. Her wedding collection, launched in April 2012, was a sell out and an inspired leap: who doesn’t want to look like a goddess on her wedding day? Vionnet, a label Kokosalaki has designed for, is one of the best design houses for a modern take on goddess dressing. Its spring/summer 2014 collection features a draped dress in sheer navy silk, with blue shorts peeping provocatively from underneath. Donna Karan continually reinterprets Grecian draping in modern jersey fabric and Alber Elbaz at Lanvin rarely fails to reference draping. Elbaz’s designs make a woman feel

like a goddess; this is why women across the globe turn to him for unerringly feminine styles. This season Dolce & Gabbana was inspired by Sicily’s Greek roots, playfully loading models with coin belts and featuring chifon dresses printed with temples and coins. The infuence of their country’s heritage can also be seen in collections from some young Greek designers, including Anastasia Dosi, Polina Argyrou and Aida, whose spring/ summer 2014 collection includes feminine lines and chifon. Regardless of trends, it is, of course, how those dresses make us feel that’s really important. We associate the goddess dress with ultimate beauty and that’s

empowering. Hollywood understands this and has, over the decades, given us many versions of Helen of Troy. Think of Elizabeth Taylor in draped white silk in Elephant Walk or Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. Grace Kelly, among the most idolised women of her generation, frst meets Cary Grant in To Catch a Thief wearing a blue chifon Grecian gown designed by Edith Head. ‘Grecian dresses are very easy to wear,’ says Chapman. ‘They’re comfortable, fuid and always look glamorous. They photograph very well from every angle, which is important on the red carpet.’ No wonder, then, that a new generation of 21st-century goddesses is on the rise

In recent years, contemporary and innovative design in Athens has grown tremendously, from architects inspired by bioclimatology and a cultural centre developed to support international artists to interior design boutiques stocking

the latest in contemporary and collectible furnishings. Athens has a rich past – but it is certainly not living in the past. Its famous historical sites attract visitors year after year, but not far from some of its well-known classical attractions,

two stores are making their mark on Athens’ interior design scene, and beyond. North of the Acropolis is Mofu, a design store in the heart of the old city that ofers vintage and contemporary pieces. Mofu’s managing director Demetris Demetriou sources furniture from Europe and the US and works with local interior designers and stylists to create innovative window displays. Inside the store, which opened in 2001, you’ll fnd a collectible mix of furniture, lighting, decorative items and wallpaper from the likes of Knoll, Herman Miller and Serge Mouille alongside contemporary designs from Magis, Cappellini and Tom Dixon. Demetriou fnds that value and quality both keep mid-century-style furnishings consistently popular. ‘Vintage furniture can be unique, especially if it’s made with exotic woods, which were both available and stylish at those times,’ he says. ‘Until recently, there hasn’t been anything major in furniture design since Bauhaus and the international style.’ Mofu can ship internationally

and Demetriou has also furnished some celebrity homes on several of the Greek islands. North-east of the old city is Kolonaki, a chic shopping district where you’ll fnd the Benaki museum alongside luxury stores. Near Dexameni square is Myran, a Scandinavian design store owned by Swedish-born Martin Olofsson and Athenian Myrto Papacharilaou. The shop provides a curated edit of the best of Scandinavian design and caters to architects and interior designers as well as customers seeking pieces

for their homes. Some of Myran’s recent projects include providing furniture for Aegean Airlines and hotels and villas in Santorini. West towards the sea is the Onassis Cultural Centre, which opened in 2010. This impressive building was the result of an international architectural competition arranged by the Onassis Foundation, an organisation which supports and promotes Greek artists and international collaborations. The competition was won by French architecture practice Architecture Studio and the building’s striking façade is made of white marble bands that refect the Attic light during the day and allow passers-by a peek into the auditorium at night.

Architect Pavlos Chatziangelides of 314 Architecture Studio has merged eco-friendly design and an industrial feel in an unlikely space. The concept of Enigma, a restaurant and café in a former industrial space on Karaiskaki street in the north-western suburb of Chaidari, was to turn the interior into a greenhouse. The result includes garden walls, which get sunlight from openings in the roof during summer months, graffti-painted concrete, wood fnishing, LC2 furniture and sculptures by designer Gianni Aspras. The building also has a bioclimatic shading system that uses perforated metal panels. ‘Bioclimatic architecture and energy efciency are some of the basic designing axes in my work in order to create a sustainable and moral architecture for present and future generations,’ says Chatziangelides. The result is a far from ordinary cofee house; it’s a unique visitor experience. Cabal, a club in the Gazi area, which renowned for its vibrant nightlife, is another of Chatziangelides’ projects. This area of Gazi is called Keramikos for the ancient ceramic factories located in the area from 500 BC, explains Chatziangelides. For the exterior of the club he reused ceramics from neoclassic houses from the 1900s to create a dark, textural exterior. Examples of contemporary architecture and design such as these help this ancient city keep pace with the modern world mofu.gr, myran.gr, sgt.gr, 314.gr

Table Talk Inviting interiors and menus featuring the highest quality produce mean Greece’s top restaurants are not to be missed. Verity Hogan explores a selection of the very best

Greece’s culinary tradition dates back more than 4,000 years, and the country ofers a breadth of dishes that will satisfy both vegetarians and meat lovers, all based on the highest quality ingredients. Traditional menus feature deceptively simple dishes centred on quality produce, a balance of herbs and spices, and almost ubiquitous olive oil. Greece is rich in natural produce. The country’s cheeses, especially feta, are internationally acclaimed, while the Aegean and Ionian Seas are known for their clarity and abundance of fsh. globalblue.com

There are also regional diferences. Athens boasts arguably the most diverse dining scene thanks to its varied population, while the northern region, including Thessaloniki, has a slightly spicier cuisine thanks to a blend of Turkish and Middle Eastern infuences. Dining is one of the most important aspects of Greek culture and it is typically casual and convivial. The act of sharing a meal with family and friends is as important as the food itself, resulting in delightfully relaxed restaurants with well-devised décor.

Jewellery designer and athens native Paul Sarz always makes a nostalgic nod to the past in his standout collections and his pieces make ideal gifts. The designer favours a vintage aesthetic but his work still has a modern feel – even pieces inspired by the ancient world feel current due to the use of graphic symbols and bold lines. Pendants, rings and earrings are all available, while Sarz’s store interior refects his retro leanings with décor inspired by an antique apothecary. Translations РУССКИЙ ПЕРЕВОД 28: Immortal Appeal

32: New Vision
