OUR TOWNE SOUTHERN RENSSELAER & NORTHERN COLUMBIA COUNTIES WINTER ISSUE JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2013
DEAR OUR TOWNE READERS, HAPPY NEW YEAR. SINCE MY DECEMBER ISSUE, IT HAS BEEN A ROLLER COASTER OF EMOTIONS. THE BEAUTY OF THE CHRISTMAS SEASON WAS COUNTERED BY THE GRIEF & SADNESS OF THE NEWTOWN, CT HORROR. IN AN INSTANT, I WAS JOLTED BACK TO THE REALITY OF WHAT TRULY MATTERS IN LIFE. NOT THE GIFTS, FOOD & PARTIES TO ENJOY; RATHER THE FAMILY, FRIENDS & COMMUNITY THAT WAS JUST AS I KNEW IT TO BE WHEN I WOKE UP. I DO BELIEVE THAT I AM ALWAYS ONE TO FEEL GRATITUDE IN THE MOMENT OF EACH DAY. BUT ON THAT DEEPLY SAD DAY, I WAS CONFRONTED WITH THE SCARIEST OF ALL THOUGHTS. THAT I COULD ACTUALLY NOT SEE A LOVED ONE AGAIN, IN AN INSTANT. ALL THAT I KNOW TO BE TRUE AND REAL COULD BE TAKEN AWAY BY ANOTHER PERSON, IN A MOMENT IN TIME. HOW COULD THIS HAPPEN? HOW WILL THE COMMUNITY OF NEWTOWN, CT EVER MOVE FORWARD? THIS HAS BEEN ON MY MIND AND HEAVY IN MY HEART. OF COURSE, MANY OF YOU CAN RELATE TO WHAT I AM SAYING. IF ONLY GOOD COULD COME OF THIS TRAGEDY. WITHOUT HOPE, ONE CAN’T MOVE PAST TRAGEDY. BUT, HOW? I SUPPOSE THAT ONE SILVER LINING WAS THAT PEOPLE, EVEN FOR

JUST A FEW DAYS, WOKE UP AND GAVE TRUE GRATITUDE FOR WHO, NOT WHAT, WAS PRECIOUS IN THEIR LIFE.
MY CHILDREN & FAMILY, MY MOST THE SILLY BICKERING AND WHINING ABOUT THE DINNER SELECTION DIDN’T MATTER. I WAS GRATEFUL THAT I COULD HEAR THEM & THAT THEY WERE HERE WITH ME. FOR THAT I AM GRATEFUL. UNLIKE THE COMMUNITY IN NEWTOWN, I STILL HAD WHAT WAS SACRED TO ME. MY FAMILY AND COMMUNITY IS SAFE AND SOUND. MORE PRECIOUS THAN EVER. MORE APPRECIATED THAN EVER. PRECIOUS GIFTS IN LIFE, WERE HUGGED TIGHTER.
GOING INTO 2013, I WOULD LIKE TO FORGET THE ENORMOUS NEWTOWN IS COPING WITH AND THE SCARY THOUGHT THAT I CAN’T BE THERE TO PROTECT MY FAMILY ALL OF THE TIME. BUT, REALLY, I DON’T WANT TO FORGET. BECAUSE, IF I DO, I LOSE THAT SINCERE GRATITUDE. FOR ME THIS CAN BE THE SILVER LINING THAT COMES OUT OF THAT MOST HORRIBLE TRAGEDY. THAT IS MY NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTION FOR 2013. REMEMBER EVERY DAY COULD BE THE LAST OF LIFE AS I KNOW IT. I WISH ALL OF MY READERS A SAFE & SOUND 2013 FILLED WITH GRATITUDE FOR ALL THAT YOU HAVE IN YOUR LIFE. ENJOY. Kontakuto Martial Arts & Fitness Kontakuto Martial Arts and Fitness Center is a family
orientated facility offering martial arts and fitness programs in Kyokushin Karate, Cardio Kickboxing, Vinyassa Yoga and Boot Camp Conditioning Classes. Established in March of 2012 the school has grown into a tight knit comunity with over 50 students. “We are very happy at how fast the school has grown” said Sensei Thomas Bobb. “We work hard with our students and their families to offer affordable classes, including traditional karate. It is our goal to help children 4 and older benefit from the life skills karate offers, keeping in mind their busy schedules and everyone’s tight budget. We highly encourage kids and parents to stop in anytime and try a class for free.” Kontakuto karate isn’t just for kids. They also offer a wide variety of classes for men and women. “We have a great karate program for adults” said Senpai Casey. “Our adult program is tailored to adults of all fitness levels and age. Don’t let age or an injury stop you from trying karate. Karate is great physical exerci se, improves flexibility and increases endurance and self confidence!” Karate classes take place Monday through Thursday and are instructed by Sensei Thomas Bobb and Sensei Chip Wood. Sensei Bobb, the school owner and head instructor is also the Rensselaer Branch of the International Kyokushin Union. The Center, which is also referred to as Rensselaer Kyokushin, is a member of this worldwide organization whose mission is to offer traditional karate instruction that includes practice of the mind, body and spirit combining the discipline of Eastern culture with the hard work of the American spirit. Sensei Bobb and Sensei Wood have over 30 years of combined martial arts experience as well as over 12 years of teaching experience. In addition to karate, the Center also offers other classes including cardio kickboxing which is guaranteed to burn serious calories. The primary focus of this class is a great cardio workout where participants get to kick and punch heavy bags to fun and energetic music. This Monday night class from 6pm – 7pm is taught by Erika Beardsley, a certified group instructor who also teaches boot camp and personal training at the facility. For those looking for something challenging without the kicking and punching Vinyassa Flow Yoga class is taught on Wednesday nights from 7pm – 8pm by Keylla, who is a 200 hour Yoga Alliance certified instructor.

Scrappy New Year! Let’s work together to start a Resolution Revolution in 2013. Here are some basic guidelines to follow to help you de-clutter your home and get things organized: •Start simple by cleaning one area of your home, such as the basement or garage, and let that snowball (seasonal pun, had to be done) into wanting to then organize the rest of your home. •Consider hiring a cleaning service to get your house back in order quickly and to establish a starting point for the rest of the year. •Make sure you have the right cleaners and tools to do the job effectively and, hey, READ THE DIRECTIONS! •Don’t be a martyr-get everyone involved, assign tasks equally and make checklists to help you stay focused. •Think twice before every new purchase and for every new item, remove at least one old item. •Come up with a system for storing EVERYTHING in your house…labels out! •Plan to do one additional task every day…I’ll bet that 5 minutes of extra effort will save you hours of work down the road. •Establish a “One Year Rule”…if you haven’t worn or used something in one year and it does not have personal or high cost value, get rid of it! Scrapster is local family owned business which provides a NO COST scrap metal, appliance and electronics removal and recycling service. We are insured, convenient, and reliable. We provide top Quality work every time you need us. Everything is properly recycled, disposed of or donated. Our other services include very reasonably priced Junk Removal, Television Removal, and Clean Outs. To schedule an appointment, please call us at (518) 505-5055. Please Like us on Facebook and visit us at www.scrapster.com for news, specials and information about recycling. WORD
OF MOU UTH TH BY
DR. JO OE E L APINS APINSKI KI , DDS Dear Dr. Lapinski: I was recommended to your office by a friend. When I called your office, I was confused. She said my first visit would only be an exam. I usually get a cleaning too. Also, she said you take my insurance but don’t “participate”. This was confusing so I didn’t schedule an appointment. –Mia, via mobile site Dear Mia: First of all, Thank You for taking your friend’s recommendation. We always welcome new patients & especially love it when someone likes our service enough to pass along our name. To answer your first question. Several years ago – I decided that the best way to get to know a patient was to see them for an hour on their first visit. I think it’s important for me to take the time to discuss options, chart old & new dental work, conduct thorough periodontal evaluations, take any necessary x-rays plus have time to answer any questions you might have. Every patient has different needs, so, I like to see all new adult patients before scheduling a hygiene visit. Patients really appreciate the dedicated time, it keeps the schedule running on time, so it’s a policy I stand behind. Insurance is a pretty confusing topic & I’m admittedly not an expert like my benefits coordinator. In a nutshell, my office takes & processes any insurance benefits that allows you to choose a dentist – not just pick a name off a list. We collect estimated co-pays at the time of service based on what we know about your benefit. There are only a few plans that will not reimburse me directly, but this is not the norm. I diagnose dentistry based on what I see & believe is the best treatment for a patient. I will always tell you what I think is in your best interest & try to give you options, then let you decide. We try to “pre-authorize” major dental work so there are no surprises. As a consumer, you can only make informed decisions about dentistry when you have all of the information. My staff processes all claims & advocates for my patients. Ultimately, exemplary Customer Service is our goal. We hope you consider us for your dental needs. If not, good luck, but know that our door is always open, should your needs change. Please continue to ask your questions, visit us on the web www.LapinskiDental.com, Like us on Facebook & we look forward to meeting you in 2013! DrJoe@LapinskiDental.com

Should I list now or wait until Spring? By Cathy Graziano
Should I put my properties up now or wait until Spring? “ I have found myself answering this question frequently. The first part of the answer depends on a seller's personal goals. If you want or need to sell then yes! If a seller has no place to go or there are other external factors that pushes their timeline out it might make sense to wait until those answers are figured out and there is less uncertainty. This is the case for any seller at any time of the year. Here are the main advantages for a seller to list now instead of waiting until Spring: In the Spring, how many other sellers will have waited? They may have been waiting a year or so until the market got better or perhaps just figured spring was the best time to list their property. So come March, April and May, there will be that much more competition! By listing now, you avoid that potential competition. I have found that in the months when inventory is down sellers with a well-maintained and nicely presented home can actually obtain a higher price. Recently, several homes in our area have received multiple offers competing to purchase their home. Take advantage of the fact that some of your competition is holed up for the winter. Some buyers will just wait until spring to start their search as well. They will just be beginning the process. However, home buyers search and shop for homes in the internet 365 days a year. There may be a slower pace but it certainly does not cease during the winter months. In addition, the buyers that are out house hunting during the winter timeframes are serious and motivated. The mortgage rates right now are still very low! There is concern that interest rates will not stay this low. This is actually causing an increase in buyer traffic and activity. Further, buyer confidence is starting to shift which is also increasing buyer traffic. If you list now, you will catch this wave of increased buyer showings. When all is said and done, wouldn't you rather have your house sold by March and April and moving on with your life than potentially just listing your house at that point in time? I love it when we accomplish our goals ahead of schedule - it is a great feeling. Lastly, there is always risk that the housing markets could deteriorate instead of picking up. The reality of the market getting that much better in a short period is remote. I doubt that just by waiting until spring, a sales price could be higher by 10 percent. In fact, it could even be a little worse. “Should I list in the winter?” Only if you want or need to sell. Cathy is a resident of East Greenbush and is an associate broker with RE/MAX Capital. She has over 20 years experience in real estate and is a member of the NYSAR Professional Standards, Education Management & Housing Opportunities Committees. “I would appreciate the opportunity to earn your business and referrals” Cathy 518-533-3605 518-496-2297 cathygraz@gmail.com
Seize the Day By Daryl Bart I spent a good portion of this past holiday season feeling conflicted & I had no one to blame but myself. I convinced my family that since we had the week off around Christmas, that, in lieu of big gifts, we could go away for the week. Now there was the obvious elephant in the room…we wouldn’t be home for Christmas, for the first time EVER. Even as I write it, I feel the reminders of all the shocked looks from Allison “How will Santa find us?” to the friends and family who asked “Really? Are they OK with that?” No, they weren’t all OK with it. Fast forward…We decided to do it. We were officially skipping Christmas. At first the planning was thrilling, I felt like a real Rebel, and I loved saying it “Oh, we won’t be home”. Then Reality hit. In order to make this happen we had to do Christmas anyway – in full form by Christmas Eve Eve. (Sunday) The cookies will need baking, gifts and house readied for our traditional dinner for 20 hosted just hours before our departure…urgh…I did this to myself Wow – going away for Christmas vacation sure is exhausting. Then amid the craziness of month of planning & packing & shopping & cooking & working & schooling & well wishing, the unthinkable happened just a few hours away in Connecticut – and this following on the heels of the October hurricane. I watched in stunned horror as the events unfolded on tv in real time and over the coming days. My stress was suddenly replaced by sadness and anxiety for my own family but felt a tremendous wave of sadness for folks whose lives were changed unbelievably and tragically. I couldn’t help reflecting on my life and the small issues that were causing me stress – like decorations and schedules. I hugged my kids tightly through their eyerolls at my escaping tears. I couldn’t find the words to explain what had happen. Couldn’t believe I had to explain it. The world we live in isn’t perfect and sometimes it’s downright tragic and scary – but I felt like if I wake up and my feet hit the floor – I have this chance to decide how my day is going to go. When I think about the resolutions we all know I make and remake regardless of the month or year…I can say that I am much less conflicted than I was just a few weeks ago. I’m determined to give life a better effort in the moment. To love deeply & be relevant & kind & give back when I can & have more compassion, regardless of my own internal chaos. In 2013 I’ll remember what has been lost but anticipate all that I have to gain – one day at a time, one hug at a time…and now know that Christmas can come any day of the month or be any place – as long as my family and friends know I love them. Happy New Year Joe, Nathan, Allison. XO Mom

FRIENDS OF KINDERHOOK MEMORIAL LIBRARY CUBA:
AN ILLUSTRATED TRAVELOGUE
Kinderhook, NY – Are you already tired of winter weather? Curious about our island neighbor that sits just 90 miles south of Florida? If you would like to find out more about Cuba, come satisfy your curiosity on Sunday, January 13th at 3pm, when the Friends of the Kinderhook Memorial Library will present an illustrated travelogue. The event will take place at the Library and is open to all. Gary Spielmann, President of the Board of Trustees of the Kinderhook Memorial Library, and his wife, Wendy Power Spielmann, a Friend of the Library, will share photographs of their recent trip to Cuba. Also featured will be an exhibit of Cuban sketches by Alvin Knoll, a Friend of the Library and a Kinderhook artist and architect, who has also traveled to Cuba recently. Gary said, “Ever since Fidel Castro seized power and threatened to plunge the world into a nuclear missile crisis in 1962, we’ve all been fascinated with this small island nation.” He and Wendy traveled to Cuba in March 2012 as participants in a Cornell Cooperative Extension field trip. The primary focus of the trip was educational. The tour provided first-hand demonstrations of the ways in which Cuba is developing agriculturally and becoming tourist friendly. For more information, please visit the Kinderhook Memorial website at: http://www.oklibrary.org Email: friends@kinderhooklibrary.org Laura Darman (518)-339-9302 or ldarman@malkinross.com

Have you Heard?
By Jennifer Felts Many of you may be familiar with Gettysburg Flag Works the East Greenbush based business that is one of top retailers of Flags in the country. But, have you heard that they have recently purchased another local business, Field of Teams? Gettysburg Flag works was started by Michael Cronin 20 years ago. After being laid off from his job at the Watervliet Arsenal, he decided to utilize his military & engineering background and open his own business. Gettysburg Flag Works was born. He initially sold his products out of his brown station wagon… I just love these stories that remind me of the “American Dream” and why this country is so great! His entrepreneurial venture has grown by 20% each year, according to his Marketing Director, Cheryl Rings, who I recently interviewed. They are a leader in on-line sales; working with businesses, schools, branches of government and individuals. Of course, they have grown 20% each year by selling more than just flags. Now with 16 employees, Gettysburg Flag Works and Field & Teams offers custom apparel and provides their customers with MANY diverse products and services. They can customize practically any item- in print or embroidery. Since the addition of Field & Teams, they work closely with sports teams, leagues, businesses, & schools. They even have local team logos and apparel on hand if you are looking for a sweatshirt or duffle bag with the Maple Hill, Rensselaer or Columbia logo. Have your name put on it for a truly personalized gift! If they don’t have what you are looking for, their graphic designer can work with you to develop what you want! I was surprised at the products and services that they offer. They carry: USA/State/Foreign Flags, Banners & Small Signs, Custom Flags & Banners, Tradeshow Supplies, Flagpoles & Installation, Flagpole Hardware, Parade Sashes & Accessories, Athletic Uniforms, Personalized Gifts (Mugs, Ornaments Etc.), Company Uniforms, Holiday Banners, Flag Cases, Baseball Caps, Golf Flags, Casket Drapes, Boat Flags, Lapel Pins (Custom too), & Flagpole Lighting. Our Towne congratulates Michael Cronin & his staff on their new venture. To see what’s new at Field & Teams, like them on Facebook at www.facebook.com/FieldAndTeams or visit their website at www.FieldAndTeams.com!

The volunteers here say I have pretty green eyes, too. I’m usually a calm, sedate kitty but I like to play sometimes. What I really want is to be cuddled and loved. I’m a people-focused girl who would love to spend time near you. I would be happy as a solo pet or I could live with another kitty. Could my “forever home” be with you? I want so much to have a home! Please consider bringing me home and start the New Year off with a kind deed! Like all Purrfect Companion kitties, Lilly is up-todate on routine shots, house trained and spayed. For more information on Lilly, please contact Maryann at 331-2221 or at kitties.purrfectcompanions@yahoo.com. Purrfect Companions is a non-profit, all volunteer rescue organization. We are always looking for good volunteers to help with the kitties or assist at our adoption clinics. If you’d like to donate a little time to these worthy animals, please give us a call at 4638709. Our adoption clinics are held 12:30-4:00 most Saturdays and Sundays at Petco, Northway Mall, Albany NY. Stop by and see some of our other kitties! We know we have one that is just “PURRFECT” for you!

OUR TOWNE SPOTLIGHTS THE GREENBUSH Y AN INTERVIEW WITH DISTRICT EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, PATRICK CIRAULO From the start, helping people is what the Y is all about. During a recent interview with Capital District YMCA District Executive Director Patrick Ciraulo, Pat enlightened me about the countless programs and services that our local Greenbush Y offers. “We’re more than just a Gym & Swim: Come see what we’re all about at the Y.” Wanting to be known as more than just a “gym & swim,” Patrick speaks passionately about the goals of the Y: to help more individuals in the local community. As District Executive Director, Pat’s leading his staff in program development and community outreach. In 2013, the Greenbush Y is seeking to collaborate with more community organizations & businesses that also want to make a difference in the community. This was certainly the mission when this charitable, non-profit organization was created, more than 150 years ago. As the needs of our society and communities have changed, the Y has created more programs that promote the three key areas of focus for the Y: youth development, healthy living, social responsibility. Central to the work of the Y is giving back to the community. With such socially responsible programming, it’s hard to view this organization as just another “gym & swim.” With these goals in mind, Pat seeks to educate the public about what the Y can do for you and your family, regardless of your income. Out of the almost 11,000 members of the GreenbushYMCA, 7,100 received some financial support. And the process of applying for financial assistance is now quick & easy. Called “Membership for All,” the application surveys an individual (or family) regarding the ability to afford the Y’s services and programs. Financial assistance is offered on a sliding scale. Last year, $141,000 went back into the community. Everyone with a desire to participate in Y Programs has an opportunity to do so. If you want to join but worry that you can’t afford it, Pat wants you to give him a call. The goal of the Y is access for all. Reaching out to make a difference in the community through education and satellite programs is also a priority. Collaborating with local schools, agencies & organizations is key in reaching more individuals. Whether youth or senior programs, Patrick maintains that the Y can make a positive impact when they have a better understanding of the needs in the community. Throughout our conversation, Pat cited one program after another. I was stunned to hear about the depth of Programs that are available through the Y in East Greenbush. Yes, I was aware of the Wellness (Fitness Center), Summer Camps & After-School Programs. For close to an hour, Pat educated me on the wealth of programs offered in Greenbush, from Premier (Travel) Basketball Leagues and Swim Team for Youth, to numerous Fitness & Aerobic Classes, Balance & Stability Classes, YOGA, the Couch to 5K Program, the Achiever’s Program, Mentorship Programs, Circle of Champs (a program for families who have a child coping with a life-threatening illness)… Really, I could continue. I am SURE you get the picture! The Y’s Scholarship Program is the key to the success of the Annual Giving Campaign. Without donations from Y members, community organizations & businesses, they would not be able to offer financial assistance. Patrick urges each family to donate, even just a small amount. A donation of just $45 can help pay for a child’s swimming lessons; a donation of $100 can help send a child to a week of summer camp. In reading this article, I hope you not only realize the impact that the Y has in the community, but also realize that under the leadership of the new District Executive Director, they want to make a BIGGER impact. Everyone should have access to the programs and membership theY offers. The staff takes pride in helping others and impacting the community in a positive manner. Promoting personal & social responsibility, children’s safety, youth development & community outreach are all goals that allow individuals to not only grow & benefit, but also GIVE BACK! In addition to the Financial Assistance that’s needed to provide these important community programs, volunteers are also a key ingredient to the success ofY Programs. Please consider giving some of your time and knowledge in 2013 to benefit the community you live in. You would be surprised at how much of a personal pay-off it is for you! To inquire about a Membership at the YMCA of Greenbush, or any Capital District YMCA location, please call Chris Mallison at 518-477-2570 ext. 1210. As we welcome 2013, please help the Greenbush Y achieve their financial goal of raising $75,000. Please call Pat Ciraulo today at 518-477-2570 ext. 1200 to learn how you can help the Y and how the Y can enrich your life!
Our Towne welcomes Pat Ciraulo as a monthly contributor. Starting in March, Pat will keep you in the loop about news, programs, events & opportunities our East Greenbush Y! Our Towne Rensselaer County ~ Jennifer Felts~518-380-1279

DEAR ANGIE, I have friends and family that occassionally “drop in.” It drives my me and my husband crazy! What can we do? We don’t want it to be awkward if we say something. But really, can’t people just call before they drop in? HELP! From, I like my Privacy in East Greenbush Dear I Like my Privacy, I have two tips for this situation. 1st - If its your in-laws or parents use it to your advantage. When they show up just say “Oh I’m so glad you stopped by I have to run and do some errands. Can you watch the kids? Do that a few times and they won’t show up anymore. Trust me as much as they want to visit and see the grand kids they really don’t want to babysit! 2nd - If its a neighbor or a friend stopping in - Don’t sit down - once you sit down they automatically think its ok to visit. Keep moving act real busy, ignore them a little then gradually say “Sorry I really don’t have time to visit. I’m on my way out.” These tips have been working for me for years. Now, I actually have to invite my in-laws over. Hope this helps, Angie The Castleton Schodack Kiwanis Club donated $1,000 in gift cards to each of Schodack Central School Districts three school buildings recently. This donation will help community families in need during the holiday season. Social workers from each school were on hand toaccept this generous donation and will be able to identify families tohelp. The donated funds come from various fund raisers (chickenbarbeques, food sales at summer concerts at the Schodack Town Park) anda very generous donation from a family in the Schodack/Castleton community. Kiwanis members would like to thank the community for their support, which allows the organization to give this Christmas donation as well as many other donations throughout the year. The Schodack CSD is very grateful for the Kiwanis Christmas donation and their continuedgenerosity to the community.

Addicted to $avings! I know, I know, your thinking, crazy coupon lady, it holds up the line, you have to buy stuff you do not use or need, what will you save, a quarter, or it just is not worth it! I have heard all of these and I think you need to take a second look. In 2012, at one grocery store, I saved over $4500 and I spent alot less. This took about an hour a week looking at the stores flyer, a few websites, printing coupons and cutting a few. Why spend the money when you do not have too, especially on products you use and then throw out! Do not be afraid to try new products and on some things I am not loyal to one specific brand, this will save you $. With the new year, lets start fresh with savings. Here are a few terms and ideas to make saving easier and to help maximize your discounts at the store.
Before you hit the stores:
1. Search the web, like coupondivas.com or couponmom.com. These sites are great, they match the coupons with the sale flyer and navigates you to free coupons and some other great couponsites too. 2. Email manufacturers directly, tell them you love there product, and ask for coupons. It might take a few weeks, some companies send high value coupons or even ones for free product. 3. I am not going to advise dumster diving or begging friends for there coupons, but how about buying a few extra papers. Some Dollar Stores sell papers on Saturday and Sunday, and yes it is a dollar. Some websites tell you how many coupon packets are in each weeks paper, so check there first to see how many papers to buy! 4. I love end of season clearence, I combine the clearanced items with coupons and yes, I do get some items for free! I carry an extra bag in the car with coupons that I know I will use, that are geared towards that specific holiday (and yes the bag is cute and designer, with all the money I save, I have been known to slurge!) I swear there is a coupon for everything, if you look most store even except competitors coupons. Take the minute to look or ask at the store. Here are a few coupon terms that have helped me save even more: Catalinas: These are coupons that print out at the register, for money off your next store purchase. You get these for buying a certain amount of a product, I usually make money when these are offered so plan carefully and match coupons with the buy! These coupons expire quick, so watch those dates!!! Stacking: This works great at stores that offer there own coupons and then you combine them with a manufacturers coupon, to get double the savings. This works great at Target, check there website for there coupons and get stacking!!!! Peelies: These are coupons affixed to the product, that you peel off. I love these, read them carefully, just because there on a certain size product does not mean you have to buy the product they are hooked too. Example, use it on a smaller size and spend less, most coupon doubling stores will double theses.
I hope this sparks your interest and motivates you to save money in 2013!!!!

According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, School-age children between the ages of 5 and 14 spend up to 80% of their time out of school. These hours represent an opportunity to help children grow and acquire important social, emotional, cognitive, and physical skills and to help them develop lifelong interests. This time can also be used to provide support for the academic challenges faced by children each day in school. After-school activities are a great way to help reduce your child’s unsupervised time, possibly lowering his risk for involvement in negative activities. After-school & recreational activities have several other benefits as well, including •Building self-esteem and self-confidence •Enhancing social skills •Teaching sportsmanship & respect for others •Providing exposure to other cultures and people •Improving time management skills. After-school activities don’t have to be school sponsored or school related. Clubs and programs can be sponsored by Private Organizations, local community centers, places of worship, 4-H clubs, or nonprofit organizations. Activities can involve academics, sports, foreign languages, arts, or something just for fun! Volunteer work can be another great way for a child or teen to spend her time after school. Volunteering provides kids with a sense of responsibility and compassion; it also can help boost self-confidence as a child learns that she is capable of doing something to help others.

GOODBYE 2012...HELLO 2013
Despite a persistently sluggish economy, stocks and bonds generally performed well in 2012. As long as interest rates do not rise significantly, the economy continues to grow, and our federal budget debt and deficit picture stabilizes, we anticipate 2013 will be a good year for stocks as well. On the fixed income side, the returns investors realize on their investments will be determined largely by the income those bonds produce. We do not anticipate that further appreciation in bond prices will again contribute meaningfully to the total returns of fixed income investments, as they have in recent years. The Federal Reserve has acted aggressively to keep interest rates at historic lows since the onset of the Great Recession. While the low interest rates have helped to support stock and bond prices, an unfortunate side effect is that it is becoming difficult for conservative investors to get an attractive income from their savings and investments without taking on increasing risk. With the Federal Reserve committed to keeping interest rates low as long as inflation remains subdued and until the unemployment rate declines to 6.5%, it will likely be at least a year or more before we see any significant rise in interest rates. However, when the market begins to anticipate the onset of rising rates, bond prices will likely start to decline. In short, we believe we are nearing the end of a 30-year, virtually uninterrupted bull market in bonds. If we enter a prolonged cycle of rising interest rates and volatile bond prices, the challenge will be in finding a way to obtain a reasonable yield on the fixed income portion of your investments while limiting the risk to your principal. In this environment, the traditional portfolio mix of equities and high quality bonds, which has generally served investors well in the past, will likely fail to achieve either the investment returns or diversification benefits investors have grown to expect. Fortunately, there is a range of options available to help investors achieve the competing aims of attractive yield and limited risk. These include shorter term bonds which offer lower yields but less risk to principal, floating rate funds whose yield is adjusted regularly and whose prices are not sensitive to interest rate movements, bonds offered by issuers outside of the U.S., preferred stock, Treasury Inflation Protected Securities (TIPS), and Master Limited Partnerships. There are many mutual funds that focus on these investments, and some that invest in a diversified portfolio of these and other securities with an eye towards maximizing yield and/or total return while minimizing risk. The investment landscape is likely to change, and a portfolio that has served investors well in the past may be ill-suited for a new environment of rising inflation and interest rates. If you are concerned that your current investment portfolio may not be appropriate for you, or you are interested in learning more about the upcoming monthly seminar series at our new Castleton location, please feel free to contact us at 518-477-5468 or 800-630-9313, or visit our website at www.centersquareasset.com.
I WENT TOO FAR BY DR. DAVID STONE
I hear that sometimes from folks—usually when they are explaining their rationale for not performing some sort of test or surgery on their currently ill pet. They are usually talking about their last pet and the unfortunate series of medical blunders and mishaps that led to their untimely demise. Now, when faced with a potentially similar situation, they back off. How many times do you need to burn your hand on the stove? A few days ago a guy told me most of the really big and expensive things veterinarians had done with his pets in the past didn’t work out very well. I told him that as luck would have it, his pet didn’t need anything big or expensive. Problem solved. But I wonder why he’s had so many bad experiences? I’ve certainly been involved in my share of cases that have gone “South”, but tons and tons more cases that have gone beautifully. Additionally, I’m around tons of other cases that other Dr.’s are handling, and most of them are going beautifully as well. Maybe previous Dr.’s have tried to do things that were risky or last ditch or “giving it the old college try” on cases that had little chance of success. I usually veer away from the 18 year old cat dental. I try not to let owners talk me into surgery for pets who are seriously compromised. I recall one old pitull, Joey, I’d known since he was a pup 12 years ago. I’d always admired him and think his owner is great. Joey would usually try to bite me but never actually succeeded. Again, his owner is great and always protected me. About a year and a half ago Joey developed a tumor under his tail…by his butt. Usually I can just get these types of cancer out and we can all be on our merry way. Not a pretty surgery, but very effective. Joey’s tumor was something else entirely. You could tell by looking that it wasn’t typical. Pathology came back that it was a tumor with long tentacle type roots that stretched well beyond the margins I had been able to provide at surgery. Bottom line, I didn’t get it all. I couldn’t. Someone else might have been more successful. Someone who had the supportive tools and skills to split the pelvis and reroute the rectum. As it was, I had a hard time getting him off the table—the bleeding was intense and profuse. I called in another surgeon to assist and we finally managed to remove this bastard of a tumor. Post op healing was difficult for Joey and his owner. Joey oozed. We only talked about it once, but it was understood that we were just waiting. Waiting for regrowth. 12 months passed and I got the call. It was back and bigger that before. And Joey’s arthritis was making it hard for him to get around and this discomfort was making him crankier. The owner asked me to cut him again. I declined and recalled to him the brutality of the surgery and difficult healing. The owner pulled out his phone and started showing me photo’s of everywhere he and Joey had been during the past year. They’d been everywhere—swimming in the ocean, long RV trip up North, fishing in various creeks and rivers, on boats, and even in a small airplane. Joey was having a blast. I really like this owner. So he asked me again, saying he had a few more trips planned and promised he would not ask again as he knew the tumor could only be debulked at best. Surgery day came and at least there was no surprise element to just how bad it would go. Again we got him off the table and I was overwhelmed by the futility of my effort. Another recovery. Another wait. This time we didn’t have to wait very long—4 months had passed and it was back. The owner sent Joey in with his fiancée. She was the heavy. We’ve got to do the surgery Doc, she says, both Joey and the owner are depending on you—he won’t ask you but I will. I was done. Joey was having more problems with is back legs, his heart murmur was worse, and I was done doing bad things to him. She showed me some more photo’s. Joey in the park, Joey in the snow, Joey on the bed. I hugged her and said I couldn’t do it. She smiled and left with Joey. About two weeks later the owner came in to euthanize old Joey. We put him down before the bloody tumor could hurt him anymore. About 2 weeks later I get a card in the mail from the owner telling me that he appreciated my efforts. About 2 months after that I got to see the owner in an appointment with a new puppy from a local rescue group. He was back in the saddle and ready for another adventure. Now I doubt it, but I wonder if this owner would also say, “I went too far.”
