DOES A POSITIVE ATTITUDE

HELP YOU AGE WELL? According to many respected medical professionals, attitude has a direct effect on health and how well you age. Multiple studies show positive thinkers are less likely to suffer from chronic diseases and disorders. Now, new research even suggests that optimism can prolong lifespans by as much as 11-15%, increasing the likelihood of living to age 85 or older.

How Positive Thinking Benefits Your Health

Some researchers theorize positive people tend to cope with stress more effectively than their negative counterparts, reducing harmful effects on the body. Others acknowledge that optimists also tend to lead healthier lives. Regardless of why there is no denying that a positive attitude contributes to a variety of health benefits as we age including lower risk of heart disease; lower cholesterol; decreased inflammation; improved immunity; decreased depression; lower occurrence of Alzheimer’s disease; and increased life span.

How to Be a Positive Thinker

So how do you bring more positivity into your life? It doesn’t mean living with your head in the clouds and ignoring life’s troubles. Instead, approach the unpleasant things in life in a more constructive way. Here’s how: Edit Your Inner Voice. The endless stream of unspoken thoughts in your head is known as selftalk, and it can be pretty harsh. If you find that yours is overly critical or hurtful, make it a rule not to say anything to yourself that you wouldn’t say to someone else. Be gentle and encouraging.

goes for people. Rather than fixating on a person’s shortcomings, seek out and focus on redeeming qualities – everybody has at least one. Be Forgiving. Harboring feelings of resentment and anger is a negative way to live. If you tend to hold grudges, make an effort to let go of the past. It’s normal to feel hurt or disappointed from time to time, but don’t dwell on it. Forgive and move on. Follow a Healthy Lifestyle. Diet and exercise can have a profound effect on mood, and thinking. Exercise for 30 minutes a day, even if it means breaking it up into 10-minute intervals, to reduce stress and elevate your mood. Stay away from starchy, fatty and sugary foods, which can cause mood swings, and leave you feeling weighed down and even depressed.

Aging Well at Hawthorne Ridge

When it comes to cultivating a positive attitude, it’s important to surround yourself with other upbeat, supportive people. The residents at Eddy Hawthorne Ridge can attest to that. With endless opportunities for lasting friendships, great community events, wellness programs, and a focus on life enrichment activities, our senior living community has helped many seniors to not only age well, but to live longer, happier, healthier lives.

Practice Gratitude & Kindness. Think about the things that you are thankful for in your life. Make a conscious choice to find the good in every situation, no matter how challenging. The same To learn more about Eddy Hawthorne Ridge or to schedule a virtual tour, contact us at (518) 279-5502

Family Foot Care, P.L.L.C. Podiatric Medicine & Surgery

Dr. Nancy Ann Quimby

Dr. Kurt W Relation

What is a Bunion? A bunion is often described as a bump on the side of the big toe. The big toe leans toward the second toe, rather than pointing straight ahead. Bunions get worse over time, gradually changing the angle of the bones over the years and slowly producing the characteristic bump. This can become increasingly prominent and painful, although some people never have symptoms. Bunions are most often caused by an inherited faulty mechanical structure of the foot, which can make a person prone to developing a bunion. Symptoms may include: Pain or soreness; inflammation and redness; a burning sensation; possible numbness. To fully evaluate the condition, our doctors will take x-rays to determine the degree of the deformity and assess the changes that have occurred. Because bunions are progressive, they do not go away and will usually get worse over time. But not all cases are alike—some bunions progress more rapidly than others. In many cases, some type of treatment is needed and both surgical as well as non-surgical options are available. If you would like to know what your options are for treatment, call for a consultation today!

Due to current NYS mandates, we require that all patients wear a mask when coming to the office.

Since returning to work, we’ve had an alarming number of broken teeth. More than usual. Anecdotally, the culprits these days seem to be mostly almonds, although, likely because they are a popular snack, not any more dangerous than other nut. Let me mention that I personally love a good snack of as much as the next person - and I’ve also seen everything from bagels, to pizza to apples to candy break teeth too. This has simply been a trend that I wanted to point out. Here’s the thing. As we age, so do our teeth. Even folks that have meticulous home care commonly develop microscopic cracks in their teeth. Age, previous fillings and the stress of clenching, biting and chewing all add up to the potential hazard lurking in our mouths, little cracks generally without symptoms for the patient when they are chewing. Stress is also a big factor in the force on the teeth. And there has been a lot of that going around these days too. Grinding or clenching your teeth can also cause fractures. Breaking yourself of the daytime habit of grinding can only benefit you. If you’re a night time grinder, a night guard could help. You might never know that you have a crack or a fragile tooth, and it might never cause you any problems, until it does. When you bite down on that dreaded almond and hear a “crunch”. I will say that this is most common on teeth that already have a filling. The bigger the filling, the more stress the tooth has endured. That’s why your dentist and hygienists check the teeth and gums and take x-rays. So we can attempt to catch anything, look for trends in wear patterns, see changes in the surface of the teeth and defects in your enamel, before it happens. Prevention. What happens when that tooth breaks?. Each tooth is different. Most of the time the tooth is fixable with a new filling or a crown. If too much of the tooth breaks off, that is when you might need a root canal. In the worst case scenario, if there is not enough tooth left to repair, or a hidden internal defect, the tooth might need to be extracted. So here’s the thing. Snack smartly. Don’t use your teeth as tools. They should not be used to open packaging. Definitely not bottle or twist caps. You should avoid crunching on ice cubes, and please be careful of the nuts! If something concerns you, ask your dentist, and if you think there might be something going on, tell us, sooner than later!

Easy Apple Crisp Recipe

•Let us consult you what option is best for your needs:

Ingredients3½ cup coarse graham cracker crumbs (not too fine) ½ cup butter (1 stick) 6 cups peeled & sliced apples 2 1/2 tablespoons lemon juice 1 cup brown sugar, packed 2 teaspoon cinnamon ¾ cup warm water Optional Toppings- whipped cream, yogurt, and/or vanilla ice cream. DirectionsPreheat oven to 350° Spray/grease an 11" x 7" or 2 quart baking dish. On the stove top, melt butter over medium heat and add graham cracker crumbs. Cook and stir for about 10 minutes, or until crumbs are lightly browned. Remove from heat and set aside. Peel, core and slice apples, toss with lemon juice. Set aside. In a bowl, combine sugar and cinnamon. Layer half the apples in the bottom of the greased casserole dish. Pour water over apples. Cover apples with half the brown sugar mixture and half the graham cracker crumbs. Repeat layer - apples, sugar and top with graham cracker crumbs. Bake until apples are tender and top is lightly browned - about 40 minutes. If top is browning too quickly, but apples are not yet tender, cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake until tender. Top with whipped cream, vanilla ice cream or yogurt if you'd like. Enjoy!

The East Greenbush Community Library

is here for you!

Throughout these challenging times, we have not skipped a beat in our effort to provide programs and services to the community. We ramped up our technology to deliver virtual programs and reference services, expanded our digital collection, and increased access to our resources (temporarily relaxing restrictions and waiving fines). In collaboration with our community partners, the library board, and staff, we prepared the building for a safe reopening. On May 28th we began accepting returns. Lending resumed through our drivethru window on June 1st. We partially reopened to the public on July 1st adding limited Grab and Go services (browsing, lending and in-person reference). We look forward to expanding our services and to greeting more of you in person as the mandates allow. Since closing on March 18th, it has been nonstop, all hands-on deck for our team of librarians, support staff and administrators. They continue to ramp up their creativity and technology skills to deliver our most popular programs virtually – storytime, summer reading challenge (469 participants as of 6/30!), cookbook club, book clubs, trivia night, crafts, and teen meetups. Staff are creating videos, curating booklists, hosting virtual events via Zoom, and engaging patrons on social media with book chats, activities, library news and funny memes. For light-hearted fun, Sully, our beloved (and now retired) mascot, entertained his fans with his mischief and assured us that the library was safe while we were closed. Charlie, our new mascot, arrived in early May for training and cannot wait to meet new friends in the children’s room! We added an online readers’ advisory service for adults and book bundles for kids – based on your preferences our librarians will make selections and place your items on hold for pick up at our drive-thru window. Staying connected with our patrons is our priority. For patrons who are not online, we reconnected with them by phone and personal letters. Reference services have remained available throughout – virtually, then transitioning to in-person service in July. Subscribers of our e-newsletters, the Greenbush Bookmark and Greenbush Bookmark for Adults, receive updates about services, programs, events, and library news. Learn more at eglibrary.org. The Reformed Dutch Church of Schodack at Muitzeskill annual chicken barbeque is Saturday, August 8th! Unfortunately, due to Covid-19, we will not be having the mini-market. This year, the meal will be take out only, (no eating on the premises). from 4PM to 6 PM. The meal will include chicken, potato salad, corn, cabbage salad, and watermelon. Adults: $14.00, children 6-12: $7. Reserve your meal by calling 732-7345. If no answer, leave a message including name, number and that you are calling regarding the bbq. You will be called back. The church is located at the intersection of Schodack Landing Road & Muitzeskill Road, in Schodack Landing. Please wear masks during pick-up and maintain social distancing.

August 2020

Dear Readers, I hope you are doing well under the circumstances. Current events, news and future predictions continue to be negative and provoke stress & worry. We all need to do our part to keep ourselves, family & community healthy and safe. As always, I encourage you to shop with our local, independent businesses. I am not endorsing the American Express Card or Company, but want to alert you to a fantastic program going on right now for card holders. Enroll an eligible American Express® Card by August 23, 2020, to get a $5 statement credit after using your enrolled Card to make a single purchase of $10 or more directly with any small business in the U.S. on the Shop Small® Map by September 20, 2020, up to 10 times. Find the details at http://www.shopsmall.com/ ShareShopSmallOffer. I registered my AMEX card, made purchases with business listed on the map (local businesses in this magazine) and by the end of the day had an e-mail that I was getting a $5 credit back on my card. The local, small businesses get that $5 and you get your discount, thanks to this program! It is a “win-win!” Please continue to shop local and know that those dollars are greatly appreciated. Until next month, stay safe & know that smiles are contagious, even if you can’t see them under masks! Thank you for reading Our Towne Magazine. Jennifer Felts, Publisher & Small Business Owner

In The Loop By Daryl Bart | dcbart1@gmail.com I kept thinking back to this article, one of the first one’s I ever wrote for Our Towne. This same child, who I observed at age 5, is now 17 and entering her senior year, in a time that is certain to be a pivotal time in history. I personally hope that someday, we will have the chance to reflect on now, today, as the beginning of a new paradigm, a shift in the way we see and act the world. Until then, I will look back. Sitting at the computer on this particular day, I was fully engrossed in the project at hand, a combination of scrolling facebook, filling my amazon cart and having a spider solitaire marathon (this fact really dates the story). Regardless, I was essentially perfecting the ability to tune out my kids, or I should say kid, since #1 was in school.

“Uh Huh” she says sweetly, as she arranged Barbie’s limbs and tucked in a puppy. “It is when you have a baby”. Life Lesson Alert. I needed use the right words. "Well, not exactly. Adoption is when you get a baby that was born somewhere else. Then you become a family. The mommy doesn’t have the baby in her own belly" "Ohhh, you mean the mommy doesn’t get a baby cut out of her?" (And I wonder why my kids have no filters?) "No honey. No baby in the belly. The new baby comes from somewhere else. Like your cousins." "Jesse was born in South Korea", she says proudly. "Right", I say. "And Su Jin is from China."

Allison was quietly playing in the room, beside me on the floor, inventing some game of life with the usual cast of characters; dressed Barbie, naked Barbie, dinosaur, cat in a dress, toddler toy remnants and the assorted complement of “special” stuffed animals.

"Of course, just like Su Jin. And Adam…", I add.

Out of the corner of my ear I heard a single word: "Adopted".

"Uhhmmm, Yeah" I reply.

Pulled out of my internet trance and intrigued by the event being hosting on the living room floor, I spun around to face her and asked "Allison, who’s adopted?"

How did this elude her? Adam is her oldest cousin. The first born. Adam is black.

"Barbie’s new baby" She looked up and held out a trampy looking Barbie, a weeble and a Lego Star Wars action figure to proudly introduce me to the new family. Now this is a loaded question - for two reasons. First of all, three of her six cousins are adopted, all from different countries. Ethnically, it is obvious to anyone who chooses to look. As a family, we talk openly on the topic. Adam sought out and met his birth mother in the Bahamas. Jesse might like to visit Korea, but has no immediate plans. And SuJin, a typical teenager, claims to have barely endured the 2 whole weeks with her family touring China and visiting her orphanage. Secondly, out-of-town friends were visiting shortly before this incident. Their two young children are both adopted from the Midwest. At the time, they were too young to know about their origins but will be told. However, at dinner, my son proudly blurted out in that sing song-y way kids do "I know who was born in Oklahoma", much to the chagrin of their mom and the other wide-eyed parents at the table. Nathan got the "zip-it" look from me and the topic of who was born where was quickly changed. Later, we spoke to our kids about judgment and privacy and the sharing of personal information. Just another complicated lesson in a long line of parental mixed messages and tough to grasp topics for kids who hear everything but filter nothing. I digress. “So, Allie, do you know what adopted is?”

"WHY DIDN"T YOU EVER TELL ME?" Hands on her hips. Curls bouncing, Eyes wide. The wrath of the five year old. "I’m sorry. I really thought you knew. I mean, it isn’t a secret." "MOM! How am I supposed to know these things when you don’t tell me?!?! Sigh." She is 5 going on 15 and I see the future in moments like this.

"Do you know what adopted is?" I asked her.

85 S. Main

"WHAT?!?! ADAM IS ADOPTED?!?! She stands up, indignant. She is seriously horrified.

I pause, bite my lip to suppress the giggle. "Next time, I promise to keep you in the loop, sweetie" "Fine" she says. Clearly the conversation is over. She returns to her community of assorted friends. Back to mimicking the patchwork of our family, I guess. I think to myself, my daughter has inherited her father’s trait of colorblindness – manifested in this most beautiful way.
