The Our Towne Spotlight shines on... A-Z Landscaping With travel at a minimum due to the COVID-19 crisis, folks are spending more time at home. Everything has changed. Business, lifestyle & travel restrictions have turned life upside down, as there is greater focus on health and public safety. A-Z Landscaping is an essential business that can improve your life at home; creating a permanent staycation to enjoy for years to come. Extend your homes outdoor living space where you can safely relax and rejuvenate, surrounded by fresh air and nature. Invest in your home and make it the place you won’t want to leave! Whether it is a fire pit, water feature, patio, stamped concrete, new walkway or steps, Steven Noel can do it! Give your home a special upgrade that will make life more enjoyable! Steven Noel started beautifying Our Towne homes 21 years ago, and is very grateful for all of his customers that have contributed to his success as a small business owner. Steven began his career with a simple lawn mowing company, when he returned from the U.S. Marine Corps in 2000. By 2003, his reliability & strong work ethic earned him nearly 100 acres of mowing a week. Now celebrating 21 years as owner & operator of A-Z Landscaping, he is grateful for the folks who trusted him with lawn care, plowing and of course what he is now widely known for; beautiful sidewalks, patios, pool areas, outdoor water features, fire pits, outdoor kitchens and whatever else his clients can imagine. A-Z Landscaping promises to increase your homes beauty and value with their “flawless work.”

Steven has been trained and certified by VERSA-LOK Retaining Wall Systems, CST Brick Paver Systems and Techo Block Wall & Patio Systems. Due to his certifications and many years of “on the job experience,” he has been able to perfect and achieve very minimal settling and perfectly pitched patios and walkways. Steven works with a small crew that is like a “well-oiled machine.” Hard work & dedication to his craft and company has truly paid off.

Steven does all of his own work and will pay attention to the smallest details. There are extensive steps that are to be completed that are very critical when installing patios and walkways. Bigger landscaping companies tend to overlook these steps, or send crew members that Steven’s version of the “American Dream” was only possible with a strong may not be properly trained. So, Steven warns the average homeowner commitment to excellence and respect for the owners vision. Are you of the “Glorified Lawn Mower” who tells you that they can install patios, walkways, and calls themselves a Hardscaper. A-Z Landscaping has an tired of your existing deck & outdoor space? Steven creates beautiful excellent reputation and is fully insured; you will be impressed by the patios and fire pits that create “living rooms” in back yards all of over Our Towne. What about those front steps that are falling apart? Steven flawless, mind-blowing end product! is a Hardscaper with a creative & budget-minded approach. He prides Of course, we are following CDC guidelines to keep everyone healthy himself on listening to the needs and tastes of the customer, and offers and safe. If you are interested in a free (socially distant) consultation, various creative ideas to fit their budget. Even the most challenging landscaping & hardscaping projects are welcome! He is a detail oriented, call Steven at (518) 423-0611. For some inspiration, view samples of his workmanship, visit the website: www.azlandscaping.com and creative and reliable professional who is also highly certified & trained. “Steven turned our backyard into a private oasis! We love our waterfall, landscaping and patio. Our guests have all commented on what a great job he did and it is a work of art! We would highly recommend him to anyone wanting to improve their property.” ~Dean & Orry S. in Castleton “Stevens work has completely changed the appearance of our home. We get compliments all of the time! He replaced our old, concrete walkways with a brand new brick paver walkway. It is like a gift every day! It has been 6 years and it still looks perfect. We would highly recommend Steven to anyone looking to increase their property value with landscaping or custom creations.” ~Rob & Joan F. in Valatie

Dear Readers,

Sadly, you will find that many “regular advertisers are not in the magazine, as they are closed due to COVID-19. If your income situation has not changed over the past month, I urge you to please consider supporting the businesses in this issue so that they can survive. For any business that has been closed due to COVID-19, please contact me for a reduced rate on your first advertisement when you are able to reopen. It is my goal to help Our Towne businesses survive this unprecedented time in our history. Being a small business owner is stressful enough; being closed is devastating. Let me help you get back on your feet when the government deems safe for all with a discounted advertisement.

Reflections & Revelations

CERTIFIED COLLISION REPAIR CENTER

By Suzanne St. Germain

The Rainbows Behind The Storm In my almost 50 years on this Earth I would never have anticipated what we have all been going through since March. In the beginning I was, like many, terrified – so much information coming from everywhere. Like many of us as well, I was receiving the majority of my news from social media. Two weeks in I decided to limit my access of information to those deemed knowledgeable. I social distanced as requested and did the things within my own power to control. I quit worrying about spring breakers on the beach or New York City residents lined up meeting a ship that was there to save them. I realized the following: Those paid the least have always been the most important. It is not the actors and actresses or sports players that are saving us. It is the teachers doing their best to not only keep our children educated but to keep their morale high. It is the clerks at the grocery stores stocking a million times to be sure everyone can get what they need. Most importantly, it is the health care workers sacrificing time with their family and some even their lives to help those stricken with this horrible outbreak. I am choosing to seek out the good in people. There have been many videos that bring tears to my eyes - gentlemen married for 50+ years singing to their wives with Alzheimer’s from the other side of a nursing home windows or a police officer, after he pulls a doctor over, going back to his car and giving her all of his face masks. It is also the fact that through it all, life is still going on; there are proposals and babies born. My children and I are still able to spend time together and laugh. But, most importantly, it is the thousands of rainbows behind the storm. I chose not to concern myself with the population that is hoarding all the toilet paper and canned goods. Instead, I am looking past those selfish individuals to those giving of themselves, perhaps checking on an elderly neighbor or the schools making sure every child still had enough to eat. When it's all said and done, I hope the rainbows outshine this storm.

COMMUNITY COMING TOGETHER TO BEAT BACK COVID-19

Rensselaer County residents, organizations and businesses are inspiring many across the county as they face the COVID-19 outbreak, said County Executive Steve McLaughlin.

off shore pier

McLaughlin said there have been many instances of individuals, businesses and organizations going above and beyond to help responders and health care professionals in the county. “The COVID-19 outbreak is presenting real challenges to our county, but every day, we are seeing great acts of service, courage and compassion from residents and those who serve the public. These displays of strength and generosity show we are going to come back from COVID-19,” said McLaughlin. “There have been many tough moments in our county during the COVID-19 outbreak. At the same time, there have been moments of community spirit that give all of us strength for the fight ahead,” added McLaughlin. McLaughlin recognized two Schodack businesses, The Hill and the Crisp Cannoli, for donations. Both restaurants have made significant donations to health care professionals and first responders to show support at a crucial time. McLaughlin extended thanks to Jeff Swartz at the Hill and Jason Grant at Crisp Cannoli for their service. Restaurants including Paolo Lombardi’s and LoPorto’s have also made similar donations, including a donation by LoPorto’s to the team at Samaritan Hospital. The county was also recognized by many in the community for teaming up with the East Greenbush Fire Department to provide fish fry lunches in March. The Fire Department had ordered a major delivery of fish only to be forced to cancel an upcoming fish fry. Learning of the shutdown, McLaughlin purchased fish fry lunches for members of the county’s emergency services team and Health Department crew, along with the East Greenbush Police Department and town employees. The teamwork shown in so many areas of the county is evident with the county’s home delivered meals program. In February, before the outbreak, the county had 450 recipients for home-delivered meals. At McLaughlin’s direction, the county invited seniors over age 60 to enroll in the program, and there are now over 1100 meals being offered each day. To help with the deliveries, the East Greenbush Police, North Greenbush Police and Schodack Police are all making deliveries, along with volunteers. “We want seniors to be able to stay home and avoid COVID-19. To help with that, we are providing meals to an ever-expanding group of seniors, and we have gotten great help from the community in making these deliveries,” said McLaughlin.

News from the Anchor for May 2020 The world is a very different place than it was 6 weeks ago. Who would have thought a virus as serious as the corona virus would strike so quickly and deadly; bringing us all to our knees in such a short time.. Just think of the changes that have occurred in all our lives in a few short weeks. So many families are out of work, children out of school, shortages in the grocery stores, so many stores closed and restaurants going to take out to survive to name a few. Then the doctors, nurses, EMT’s, hospitals all on the front lines of the many that are sick; they are real hero’s. God bless the many workers who are helping us all through this awful time. That brings us to the whose who have lost their jobs & income. They know the Anchor is here for them! The need has been great and the Anchor is asking our community to help us anyway you possibly can; whether food donations or monetary donations; anything is appreciated. A TOWN of SCHODACK FOOD COLLECTION IS PLANNED FOR THE BEGINNING OF MAY. PLEASE LIKE US and Our Towne Magazine (Rensco) on FACEBOOK FOR DETAILS. Food could be dropped off at the Anchor anytime during our operating hours; Monday’s 5-7; Tuesday’s & Thursday’s 9-2 and the first Saturday of each month from 10-1 behind Riverside Center for Nursing & Rehabilitation at 90 North Main St, Castleton-on-Hudson. The restrictions are in place so no one is permitted in the building but you will be met at the door! Checks can be mailed to PO Box 92 Castleton, NY 12033. Also remember that our Thrift shops are closed right now so we are not accepting clothing and housewares at this time.. Our restaurant fund raisers have been postponed, the Postal drive in May has been cancelled and the car wash fund raiser for June 6-7 is still on but the car wash has been closed ( so it’s questionable). These were big events in keeping our shelves stocked so please help when you can. Think of others less fortunate, stay home, keep your distance and wash your hands! God bless you all!

Real Estate in the Coronavirus (COVID-19) Era By Marlena Brown, Licensed Real Estate Agent

Less than three months ago, not many of us were aware of coronavirus nor its impact on our daily lives, employment or real estate transactions. New York State has now deemed real estate as an essential business; but the platform has changed to virtual meetings, open houses, showings or video chats, etc… We have been thrusted into the wave of the future and we are all learning to adapt at a rapid speed. Current guidelines do not permit realtors to physically be present at listing appointments, showings, closings, etc... Below, you will find a few items to help you navigate this new normal. 1. Sellers can make their property appealing to potential buyers via decluttering, cleaning, painting, sprucing up hedges and the lawn, addressing any major defects with plumbing, electricity, chimney, roofing, etc… Be prepared to assist your agent with videos and/or pictures. 2. Be prepared for reducing face-to-face interaction with buyers and sellers. Real estate documents can be completed electronically via email, fax or manually by way of United States Postal Service. Buyers will be viewing properties without their agents, but providing a live video chat during showing may allow the agent to provide valuable feedback to assist within the decision-making process. 3. Virtual open houses and closings may be our new normal. Agents can participate via tele or video-conference. 4. It’s actually a buyer’s market with the increased inventory and lowered interest rates. The average buyer uses their local bank for their mortgage. This may be the time to shop around and/or compare rates, as there have been some rates at an alltime low. Remember, the lender has an increased risk now, so the rates are going to be unpredictable. 5. Speak with your attorney regarding a contract addendum for COVID-19 or a “force majeure” event; which allows each party to delay agreed upon dates for completion secondary to an act of nature, i.e. Tornado, Pandemic, Hurricane, Flood, etc… Now that we are becoming acclimated to social-distancing, we can now begin to focus on our future and utilize available technology to our advantage. Dangers of obesity Extra pounds, extra risk

It’s estimated that 45% of dogs and 58% of all cats in the United States are overweight. That’s a lot of extra pounds. Extra weight on pets might seem harmless, but an overweight pet can mean an unhealthy pet. Here are some reasons why we should keep our pets at a healthy weight.

w hat day is it? By Daryl Bart

I’ve started and stopped writing this article like a gazillion times. I have a lot to say but also nothing at all. Deadline? What deadline? When the world gets turned off, it’s hard to follow a schedule. When I look back at how I was feeling last month, I seemed so positive and hopeful. I’m still those things, but also distracted by a whole lot of nothing. I’m the same person, enjoying my family, but untethered, not guided by a schedule of Allison’s basketball games or prom dress fittings, Nathan’s finals or the night Joe works late. It all went “POOF” and I find that I’m simply confused. I wake up feeling blurry, in a world that’s a new version of “Groundhog Day” that isn’t resolving itself with each replay. Remember in the movie when Bill Murray’s character would wake up, learn from the day before and we watched as he became more efficient, more adept at navigating his new normal. I don't feel that way. It feels like a rotating door of dishes, pajamas and figuring out what to make for the family next meal. Where is that crazy motivation I was feeling and planning on from Week #1? I was like “Let’s take advantage of this time to get things organized around here!” My list of to dos was a work of art. It was broken into categories, color coded and mapped out, for each of us. Somehow, we never flipped the calendar to April and I got derailed, and now it’s May, yikes. I can’t say that I haven't done anything. I’ve watched a lot of TV. I did organize a virtual book club and we’ve actually read and discussed 3 entire books so far. I’ve completed several puzzles, but it’s a hobby that will not stick past the quarantine. I don’t appreciate the whole “yay it’s finished - ok put it back in the box”, thing.

www.ourtownerensco.com

I’m extremely thankful that my kids can handle and monitor their own education. We basically say “Got anything due today? Need anything? No?...good” That’s the extent of our virtual homeschool and for that I’m extremely thankful. I know there are parents everywhere, suffering and struggling with the challenges of virtual education and working from home. To them I can only say I hope you can give yourself some grace, and ask for help if you need it. Sidenote: Go elbow bump a teacher, they are really showing up and taking names! On the plus side, I’ve exercised almost every day. I’ve gone through the birthday cake, the Easter chocolates and the “I’m bored so I’ll eat whatever” phase and I’m ready to emerge healthier on the way out then when we went in. I’m drinking my water, moving my body, eating my veggies and getting good sleep. We’ve also been doing a “family yoga night” at my son’s suggestion so I have to be more zen by osmosis, if nothing else. What haven’t I done? I haven’t done my nails or touched up my own hair. I haven’t figured out what to do with this box of my kids art, awards, school photos and sports certificates. If you have any ideas, pass them to me. And I haven’t figured out how not to wear leggings every day. They're just too comfy. So here I sit, surrounded by piles of projects staring me in the face. I’m a year older, a lot grayer and no closer to completing the list that I will judge myself by on the other side. So ...lightbulb moment….maybe I need to take a hint from my wellness checklist and apply it to my project checklist and then I might actually finish something. Maybe I’ll start that tomorrow. Depends on what day it is. I’ll have to check the calendar.

Q: I have a friend who is a patient at your office, and I have heard you need to have 2 appointments before being fit with hearing aids, why is that?

A: At Madison and Saratoga Hearing

Center, for most patients (Insurance and referral depending) the initial appointment is a diagnostic appointment. The initial appointment determines: if there is hearing loss, if there is a need for additional audiologic testing, or if there is the need Dr. Kate Kawola for a referral to a medical physician like an Ear-Nose and Throat specialist. If hearing loss is found, the type, configuration, and severity will be determined. The audiologist will take time to explain the testing procedures and results to the patient and his or her family. Questions and concerns can be addressed immediately following the diagnosis.

If the patient is determined to be a hearing aid candidate, a Communication Assessment is recommended. At this hourlong second appointment, the patient is brought back into the sound-treated booth for additional testing. Uncomfortable Listening Levels are measured to ensure that when the hearing aids are programmed, they never exceed a level that is uncomfortable for that patient. A speech-in-noise test is completed to determine the amount of difficulty a person has in the presence of background noise. The audiologist will also ask about dexterity concerns, living situations and specific communication environments the patient is in. Hearing aid features that may be of interest- like smart phone compatibility or rechargeability are discussed along with any budget concerns. Gathering this information allows the audiologist to make a hearing aid recommendation that best suits the patient’s needs. There are countless hearing aid options available today, and our staff of audiologists wants to ensure we are not over- or under- recommending the level of technology. Basing a hearing aid recommendation only on diagnostic testing and assumption of lifestyle can lead to dissatisfaction. Our goal is to make sure each recommendation is tailored to the specific needs of each patient, and that his or her quality of life is improved!

We are unable to hold meeting or have dinners or any function as per state mandates. However, that doesn’t stop us from getting involved and helping out when and where we can. On April 11th, we collected food and monetary donations to help out the Valatie Ecumenical Food Pantry. Thank you to all who donated. We collected a truck load of nonperishable food and $320 as we drove around with the Easter Bunny. Although the kids were unable to get out of the car and get a picture with the bunny, they were happy to see him and to get a little bag of goodies. The bunny and his helpers gave out over 150 bags of candy. When life begins to go back to normal the KinderhookElks will be having breakfast with the Easter Bunny so you can all get the pictures we missed out on. Check out our Facebook page. The Kinderhook Elks has jumped on board with the “518 Rainbow Hunt” How many rainbows have you found? Kinderhook Elks Lodge has been selected for the 2020 Best of Kinderhook Award in the Clubs category by the Kinderhook Award Program.
