The Our Towne Spotlight Shines on Comprehensive

Physical Therapy Solutions

Deb embraces the opportunity to connect personally with each of her patients. “I want to help them achieve their goals; whether it be returning to golf or gardening or to simply be able to get out of bed in the morning without pain. I find out what motivates them, and utilize that as part of the therapy process. It is all about meeting the patient’s goals and I truly believe that the only way a Physical Therapist can do that is to get to know each patient as an individual.” She believes that everyone has different needs and expectations and deserves individual customized care. That is what the patient receives when they come to Comprehensive Physical Therapy Solutions, P.L.L.C.

Deborah Ciprioni, owner of Comprehensive Physical Therapy Solutions, P.L.L.C, is now celebrating 7 years working as an independent, small business in Our Towne. As any small business owner will tell you, each year that you see growth and success is truly a personal accomplishment and heartwarming. For this, she is sincerely humbled and grateful. Deb has been practicing Physical Therapy for 30 years in the Capital District, and is proud to have established herself as a local business owner in Our Towne, where she grew up and calls home. If we are lucky, we don’t need the services of a physical therapist too often in life. But when you do, quality of care, experience and attention to detail is what makes YOUR recovery more successful. If you don’t already know about Comprehensive Physical Therapy Solutions, you will want to remember this name. Comprehensive Physical Therapy Solutions, P.L.L.C., is a privately owned and operated Physical Therapy practice located at 81 Miller Road (just off of I-90 exit 10) in Castleton. Deborah A. Ciprioni, P.T. grew up in East Greenbush. All small, family owned and operated businesses involve the time, efforts and support of the family to survive and thrive. Deb considers herself extremely blessed to have that support from home. Deb says that Comprehensive Physical Therapy Solutions is a “family business.” Her supportive husband, Jay, does the bookkeeping and supports her with every aspect of running the business. Her Mom, Liz Laczynski, helps out in the office and she is grateful for this support, so she can focus on working with patients. When she reflects on the 24 years that she worked in large practices, she can’t believe that she had 4 patients scheduled every hour. Each year there was a push to see more patients, in less time. This was not her professional philosophy, so she decided to open her own practice. With the philosophy of individual, customized care and not a cookie cutter approach, she can give patients what they deserve. Personal attention and time. Deb refuses to cave in to industry standards of scheduling every 15 minutes! “I work longer hours, but it is worth it because I can.” The best part about owning her own business is that she “can spend as much time with each patient as needed.” And she does! If someone needs 15 minutes or an hour, that is what she will give them. “We educate our clients so that they are equipped with knowledge they can use at home and to prevent injuries from reoccurring.” Now, additional staff members have joined the “family business” to better accommodate patients schedules. Deb is grateful for her fantastic staff whose dedication and professionalism has allowed her to expand the business & services.

Deb has acquired extensive continuing education in orthopedic rehabilitation, kinesiotaping and manual therapy. She provides customized Physical Therapy, including treatment for back pain, neck pain, post-surgical rehabilitation, general orthopedic rehabilitation, Sports Therapy, balance disorders, stroke rehabilitation and fall prevention. In addition to the “traditional modalities” such as electrical stimulation and US, Comprehensive Physical Therapy offers Infrared Light Therapy, Thermostim Therapy and advanced Traction/ Decompression Therapy. Deb and her staff are also committed to continuing education. In addition to the 30 years of professional experience that Deb has, her staff of Taylor Lanoue-Angley,DPT,PT, Susan Heyman, PTA, Nancy Hay, PTA and Samantha Webber, PTA have another combined 30 years’ experience. They stay current with the latest in treatment modalities, exercise concepts and manual techniques. Most insurances are accepted, and they are certainly happy to answer any questions for you regarding treatment and how they can serve you in your time of need. Please call 518-915-1452 for your appointment or visit www.comprehensiveptsolutions.com.

What Comprehensive Physical Therapy clients have to say: 1. I was originally injured in 1995. Thanks to these wonderful people, I have been able to crouch down & touch the floor for the first time in over 20 years. I can walk without a cane most of the time, and my life is so much better! S.S. from Troy 2. I highly recommend CPTS. I've been to other PT clinics and have felt like I am just put in a room and given an exercise to do. At Comprehensive, the therapists are always hands on and present. The atmosphere is so friendly and welcoming, and the results are fantastic! B.S. from Schodack 3. I was in PT for Tennis Elbow. CPT is the only PT experience I've ever had that I found helpful. Nice atmosphere, pristine conditions, friendly people. K.J.H. from Rensselaer City 4. I've been helped three times in recovering from assorted injuries at CPT and each time found a respectful, caring, and friendly environment that was encouraging and absolutely successful. Large enough to have all the bells and whistles, but small enough to offer personalized care. I'm glad to have CPT as neighbors, and happy to recommend them.

Ask the Audiologist By Madison Hearing Center

Q:

I wear hearing aids but in some situations I find they are not enough. Are there any other devices to help?

: There are many assistive devices that can A help specific situations or increase the benefits of

your hearing aid. The Lions Club is very active with helping the hearing impaired and have housed a lending library of assistive devices that the public may borrow free of charge to try. The following is a list of some of the devices we loan for the publics use.

Dr. Chris Raffo

Alarm Clocks: Tired of not hearing the alarm because your hearing aid is out and you can’t hear it. There are alarm clocks that vibrate the mattress, light up a lamp or vibrate a wristband to wake you with something other than sound. Some are even small enough for travel.

AT COLUMBIA TAE KWON DO, WE •Empower Individuals and Increase Self Confidence •Helps kids focus and do better in school •Develop respect & leadership skills

ONLY

TV systems: We hear TV best when the sound is delivered directly into the ear. There are tv systems using infra-red light that work thru a headset or the T coil of your hearing aid to help make television easier to understand. Phone ringing amplifier: When the phone rings , sometimes the tone of the ring falls in an area you cannot hear, even when aided. A ringing amplifier can be adjusted for louder volume or to flash a light to give you a visual alert. Amplified phones: Telephones are available that increase the volume of the voice and allow you to change the pitch to a level that is easier for you to understand. It also has large numbers for easier dialing. Personal FM system: When in the car , restaurant etc where it is difficult to hear a friend or loved one you can wear a receiver that picks up what is being said from a paired transmitter. This also works in lectures where you can place the transmitter at the podium where the speaker will be presenting. This is basically like a personal radio station! Alert Master: This is where technology gets fancy. You can wear a unit on your belt that vibrates when various transmitters are activated. The transmitter can be placed in areas that meet your specific needs. Maybe you cannot hear when the baby is crying in their crib, there is a transmitter for that. Or maybe you want to be alerted when someone rings your doorbell, or the phone rings. A different light is activated depending on which transmitter signal you are receiving to help differentiate what is happening where. I want to make a big shout out to the Lions Club for purchasing this equipment for us to loan to you. What a wonderful service to try these items prior to making any financial commitment to be sure they meet your needs!

Thomas Kubiak's "Real World" Personal Strategy Note DIY Taxes? "Even if you are on the right track, you'll get run over if you just sit there." -Will Rogers If you have watched any TV over the last few weeks you have likely seen a litany of competing ads offering ‘free’ tax preparation. Did you know that we accountants like to joke to one another about how good these online software programs are for our business? Firstly, they are not as "easy to use" as claimed. (If you don’t believe me just google Timothy Geithner – TurboTax and you will have the evidence you need). Secondly ... they cost you an arm and a leg. You might think they're cheap. And on the surface, you might be right (though, in the last few years, a $1 Billion class action lawsuit was filed in the federal court in Philadelphia alleging gross misstatement of fees and deceptive standards of the federal "FreeFile" program ... so even on the surface, it wasn't always cheap). But I'm not referring to the money for the service itself. Using those programs can end up leaving hundreds, or even thousands of your dollars in the coffers of Uncle Sam ... even if you follow all their instructions to a tee. I see it all the time -- frustrated clients bringing in their prior year's tax return, astonished at all the "hidden money" my staff and I are able to find for them. Even worse...Choosing the wrong method, or forms, in filing your taxes can place you directly in the crosshairs for an audit. Even if you don't owe a ton of back taxes, you still don't want your record to give the IRS reason to poke through your financial life. They can do a lot of things you won't want them to do. However, if you keep a clean slate (no IRS correspondence with you, related to filing your taxes incorrectly), the opportunities for them to mess with your personal stuff will be limited. Here's another reason why this is so important ... now more than ever. New government regulations in 2018, delays in Congressional action (ie SHUTDOWNS), and issues with adjusting to the tax reform bill are creating a mess in the tax industry... you don't want to be left at the mercy of a piece of software, or a poorly-trained temp in a corporate tax prep "store". Yes, it can be seductive to "go it alone" ... to trust a piece of software to point out possible deductions. To trust your work to poorly-trained preparers in a big box office. To protect against your chances of audits through online chat room support or hourly employees. My best advice – don’t. Find a competent professional to help – and then have that person to rely on throughout the year when you have questions related to your finances. If we can help you in any way, feel free to give my office a call at (518) 732-4010 – or stop in anytime for a warm cookie and a cup of coffee!

Reflections & Revelations By Suzanne St. Germain

On the other side of the doorOn the other side of the door I've tucked my newborn into bed. He's only been here a few days but it seems like the house has never been without him. On the other side of the door is a toddler. Life with him is downright exhausting. It has taken me an hour to get him to bed between “Please read me another story.”, “I need to use the bathroom.” and “Where's my glass of water?”. People tell me I'll miss this someday but what I really miss is sleep. On the other side of the door I hear laughter. I don't know where the years have gone but it is a college student home for break helping his brother build a Lego set. The laughter is contagious between the two of them. On the other side of the door is an empty bedroom. A house once full of giggling toddlers, temper tantrums and eventually sullen high school students is now empty. On the other side of the door what was once a nursery, eventually a teenager’s room has “finally” because a craft room. However, I believe the technical term for it is an empty nest. For years I looked forward to having this room and, I will admit, the peace and quiet can be beautiful. On the other side of the door I anxiously count down to the day I welcome a grandchild for their first sleepover, curled up after an amazing day of giggles and memories. I miss the happiest of noises, a little one as part of my world.

EMAIL: ATTORNEY@PBSLEGAL.COM Monthly Legislative Column from Assemblyman Jake Ashby (R,C,I,Ref-Castleton) As we begin this year’s legislative session, I’d like to start by thanking you for trusting me to represent you in the Assembly. Thank you for your encouragement and active participation in our state and local governments. For this term I have been appointed to the following committees: Veterans’ Affairs, Higher Education, Health and Tourism, Parks, Arts and Sports Development. I have also been named as the ranking member on the Aging Committee. I am proud to serve on these committees and believe that my background as a combat veteran, college instructor, health care professional and small business owner will prove instrumental in my contributions. There’s much work to be done for our seniors who continue to serve and guide so many. Last year I was able to allocate $30,000 to the Hoosick Senior Center for renovations. As a clinician, I understand the importance of improving and maintaining the independence of our seniors. I also recognize the appropriate supports which need to be in place for independence to be sustained. This is often a customized balance and requires a thoughtful examination to analyze potential policy consequences. As someone who’s written policy in numerous health care settings and provided care to seniors for nearly two decades, I am ready for this opportunity. Our team has resubmitted and is working on new legislation that lowers taxes, protects our second amendment, promotes economic growth, establishes environmental regulations aimed to preserve and improve our quality of life, enhances care for our veterans and improves the quality and accessibility of health care. I will be traveling to several of the towns in our district to hear your concerns. Please find me on Facebook at “Assemblyman Jake Ashby” for more details regarding my mobile office schedule. Thank you for your continued support.

Pet dental care is good health sense February is National Pet Dental Health month Research has shown 80% of pets develop dental disease by 3 years of age. Plaque and tartar in the mouth cause infection and pain. Studies have shown dental infection also affects internal body organs and pets with dental disease are at greater risk for heart, kidney and liver disease, much as people are. We can better control diabetic pets’ blood sugar if they do not have dental infection. Dogs have been used as a research model for human periodontal disease and the effects of dental disease are basically the same for pets and people. When pets eat food they collect microscopic food particles that mix with saliva and oral bacteria to form plaque. The plaque bacteria grow into a biofilm, a complex of bacteria very resistant to antibiotics. A thorough dental cleaning removing the plaque and tartar is the only way to reduce the bacterial biofilm and infection. We have certified dental care professionals. Dr. Thomas Phillips is a Fellow of the Academy of Veterinary Dentistry. He has taken advanced training and certification and performs both routine and advanced dental treatments to save healthy, functional teeth. He is assisted by Tina Patton, a Dental Technician specialist, one of three in New York state. Our goal is to save teeth that will be functional and pain-free. Unfortunately, many pets have teeth with advanced disease and abscesses which will need to be extracted. Early treatment and dental homecare are the best prevention for dental disease. All pets need to have general anesthesia to perform thorough treatments. Much of the tooth and tooth roots are under the gum line and dental x-rays are needed to evaluate the underlying bone. We use the same type of dental x-rays your dentist uses. Dogs and cats will not hold their head still or hold the x-ray sensor in their mouths. Anesthesia also allows us to clean all surfaces of the teeth, under the gum line without injuring the soft tissues, and probe the gum tissue for periodontal pockets just as your dentist does for you. Many people are concerned about anesthesia. There have been many advances in veterinary anesthesia and anesthesia monitoring that have greatly reduced the risks and allow us to perform the needed procedures. Blood screening before anesthesia allows us to see if there is internal disease that should be treated first. New EKG equipment or cardiac ultrasound can help evaluate if heart disease is present. Pets are maintained on IV fluids during the procedure to maintain blood pressure and heart and kidney blood flow just as we would have during a hospital procedure. We monitor oxygen, blood pressure, KKG and have special warming blankets to prevent hypothermia. Pets need dental care to prevent other diseases. Nassau Veterinary Clinic prides itself in providing excellence in dental care and having a dynamic certified team to provide it! For more information contact us at 518-766-2636.

We All Need The Y With 160+ years of service, the Capital District YMCA is part of the fabric of our society. Our Ys are working hard to build and strengthen our community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. In support of this endeavor, Ys attract charitable support and community partners needed to engage communities and address critical needs, to magnify their impact in making lasting personal and social change. At the Y, fundraising efforts help members of the community be part of something larger than themselves, and make a difference in people’s lives. When you give to the Y, your contributed support nurtures the potential of children and teens, improves health and well-being, and supports our neighbors – especially youth and families from disadvantaged and underserved populations in the community. Capital District YMCA has a donor-centered gift program focused on attracting individual, foundation, and corporate gifts.

Annual Campaign

The Capital District YMCA is committed to a best practice, year-round approach to annual community support. Each year, the Y reaches out to staff, volunteers, members, and community partners to help fund their mission. The Y addresses ever changing community needs, making timely, community specific mission impact possible.

Endowment

To ensure our Y can continue to make a meaningful and enduring impact on our community, consider an endowment/planned gift that will provide a permanent source of funding for new programs or facility improvements. Please call Melissa at 518-869-3500 ext. 9920 to explore your planned giving options.

You Can Help!

You can help us provide life-changing programs such as LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA, which helps cancer survivors by giving them caring spaces and support to find their way forward with confidence. Each participant receives a family membership because cancer affects the entire family.

You can give a child the chance to make new friends, learn how to swim, and more with a YMCA membership for a year! Just $9 a month. You can give 5 teenagers the chance to attend a three-day rally where they’ll learn leadership skills that will benefit them forever! Just $21 a month. You can give 10 kids the chance to join a youth basketball program where they’ll develop team-building skills that will help them stay in school and be successful in life. Just $42 a month. Our Towne’s Mission:

To connect local businesses and organizations to the consumers that live in their communities. We highlight what Southern Rensselaer & Northern Columbia Counties have to offer. Our Towne Magazine content can be read in print, online & via Facebook. 20% of the magazine is donated to the communities served for promotion of events.

Our goal is to “Connect the Community” and support small businesses.

Distribution 22,500 Our Towne Magazine “connects the community” by directly mailing 21,266 copies to homes and businesses in the following communities: Rensselaer, Schodack, Schodack Landing, Castleton, Nassau, East Greenbush, North Greenbush, Averill Park, Wynantskill, West Sand Lake, Valatie, Kinderhook & Niverville.

February 2019 Dear Our Towne Readers, Happy New Year! I hope you had a wonderful holiday season. We have enjoyed having our family together under the same roof for 6 weeks with oldest daughter home from college. It was also very nice having some extra help with this magazine this month. What can I say? Allison knows how to make beautiful advertisements and also needs to “pay off” her car insurance. It is a win-win situation. Let’s say it is a family business; like the ones that advertise in Our Towne. You may have noticed that I didn’t publish a January issue. It gives me time to enjoy family, organize the business and set goals set for the new year. It gives me great pleasure to welcome some new businesses to the Our Towne family. My goal in 2019 is to further connect the communities that receive Our Towne Magazine. Over 21,200 copies will be mailed to towns in Northern Columbia & Southern Rensselaer Counties. Another 1,300 can be found at locations around town. Want to know where to pick one up? Just check out our website, www.ourtownerensco. com. and look for the tab “Pick Up Locations.” In addition, you can read current and past issues on the website. I invite you to also LIKE Our Towne Magazine Rensco on Facebook to get news and current information from the magazine. Thank you for supporting the local businesses in our community and keep in touch! May you all stay warm & safe this winter.

Castleton Public Library Eliminates Late Fees Castleton-on-Hudson, New York – Effective January 1, Castleton Public Library (CPL) has eliminated late fines for items borrowed at CPL. The elimination of late fines applies to all of the library's collections, as well as items from other libraries that are requested for pickup at CPL. Cardholders from any public library in Albany and Rensselaer Counties may now borrow from CPL without accruing late fees. The elimination of late fees is part of CPL's efforts to improve library service and remove fines as a potential barrier to library use, particularly for families. CPL's policy change is part of a growing trend across libraries nationwide. Libraries that have removed late fees are seeing increased use of their collections, more people getting library cards, and people returning to the library. In addition to the policy change eliminating late fees, CPL has also erased existing late fees for all of its cardholders to give borrowers a "clean slate" for the new year. A copy of the library's new policy can be found on the CPL website (www.castletonpubliclibrary.org). Anyone who has questions or concerns about the new policy is encouraged to contact Library Director Melissa Tacke by phone at 518-732-0879 or by email at director@castletonpubliclibrary.org. Beef stew is in my crock pot currently. It gives me peace of mind knowing all I have to do later is clean my crock pot. One pot meals are my hero!! If the rest of my house was that simple. Stephanie’s Beef Stew Recipe Ingredients2 3/4 lbs Angus beef tips 3 carrots, chopped 1 yellow onion, diced 3 celery stalks, chopped 4 garlic cloves, minced 1 cup of mushrooms 1 Tbsp worchestershire sauce 1 cup of water 1 tsp each- Salt, pepper, Italian seasonings 1 cup of corn 2 cups peas Directions: Cook tips on your stove top for about 10 minutes. Turn over to cook on both sides. Chop carrots, celery, onions and garlic and put in the bottom of your crock pot. Set your crock pot to low. Add your beef and it's juices to your crock pot. I like to put the cup of water in my pan to get those delicious bits of flavor. Add that over your food. Add Worcestershire sauce. Cook on low for 8 hours. Open up crock pot and add your corn and peas. Cook for another 30 minutes. So good you'll be licking the bowl!! Enjoy!

By Lapinski Dental

Question: I went to the dentist for a “fix” of my teeth. I admit, I’ve neglected them for some time. She basically told me that my teeth were not fixable. I have a combination of issues. Gum disease, several broken teeth, multiple cavities and also several missing teeth. She said that my teeth really needed to be removed and that I had a few options for dentures but the one I liked the most was something that would be both a denture but would not come out. What do you think? Answer: I do see this quite often and I’m sure that you didn’t like to hear that there wasn’t a fix for your existing dentition. Although there can be a number of different reasons why teeth can be “unrestorable”, you really have only a few solutions, if you want one. To answer your specific question about the denture that doesn’t come out, what your dentist was likely referring to is what we call a “Hybrid” prosthesis. This is a solution when non restorable teeth are removed, and instead of making a traditional denture, which you take in and out, we work with the lab & an oral surgeon to create an appliance (aka denture) that is attached to implants, so that you cannot remove it. Let me break this down. First the non restorable teeth are removed. The patient then has implants placed into the jaw. We create a denture that is screwed down onto the dental implants. Also, one of the procedures that has become more popular in this scenario is an “Immediate Conversion”. Instead of waiting for the mouth to first heal from the extractions, and then heal from the implants - which can take upwards of a year, we now can do it immediately where the teeth are removed, and implants are places and a provisional denture is attached all at the same day. Then when healing is complete, the patient gets a permanent appliance inserted. This saves time and best of all the patient is never without teeth. We see this more often on the lower jaw, as more patients can acclimate to a removable denture on the top, or can use a more simple clip and implant system. However it is possible to do both upper and lower arch, if the bone strength and condition is ideal. This is also sometimes an option for people that already wear dentures but don’t find them comfortable or functional or they are ill-fitting. The end result is as realistic biting and chewing experience as we can make for a patient (most patients think apples and steaks). As always, make sure to ask. We can’t help if we don’t know and our goal is to help you smile for a lifetime. DrJoe@LapinskiDental.com

Burning pain in the ball of your foot? Do you get tingling in your middle toes?

Pizza Pins And Pop

These could be symptoms of Morton’s Neuroma. A neuroma is a thickening of nerve tissue and can develop throughout the body. In the foot, most of the time this happens between the third and fourth toes. The thickening of the nerve is typically caused by compression and irritation of the nerve; this thickening can in turn cause enlargement and, if left untreated, may cause permanent nerve damage. A common cause is wearing shoes with tapered toe boxes or high heels that force the toes into the toe boxes. Activities such as running or basketball that involve repetitive pressure to the ball of the foot can also create neuromas. Those with foot deformities, such as bunions, hammertoes, or flatfeet, are more likely to develop the condition. Symptoms of Morton’s neuroma include tingling, burning, numbness, pain, and the feeling that either something is inside the ball of the foot or that something in one’s shoe or sock is bunched up. Sometimes it feels like walking on a rock. If you think you may have this condition, stop in for an evaluation today!

Snow What? By Daryl Bart I drafted this really great, post holiday, new year kind of article, figuring I’d catch you up on all things college student, his successful first semester, his Canadian “ski” trip with 200 other college students, and the things I’ve learned having him away and now back temporarily. I also figured we’d talk about how we were all working on living our best lives and had found our health and wellness routines, lost a cookie tray worth of fluffy pounds already, and organized the heck out of the house. But then, the 6 most dreaded words in upstate New York happened. “We’re gonna have a major snowstorm.” You know what I’m talking about. The weatherman's idea of a party and the Capital Region's idea of early onset amnesia. It’s that one storm each year that sends friends and neighbors into a panic as if this is the first time in their lives they’ve endured an upstate winter storm. People go crazy. With a capital C. If you go into the supermarket, it’s bedlam. Shelves are empty, boxes line the aisles as harried staff attempt to restock the toilet paper as it’s put out. If you want something from the deli, hahaha. You better have a way to stream Netflix, cause this is gonna take a while. People start making massive quantities of food, filling up the tub with water (has anyone actually ever used the water from the bathtub?) and talking endlessly about the “SNOWpocalypse”. SCREECH...let’s put on those anti-lock brakes for a minute. Hello! (knock fist on head) Come on! We live in upstate New York. I mean, I’d give you a panic-pass if you were an exchange student from Barbados, but you live here, nestled between the Catskills, Adirondacks and Berkshire mountains, where people actually opt to go sit on the lakes and drill holes to fish, for hours, for fun. I can’t remember a single winter when it didn’t snow. (ok that one xmas a few years back was a little sparse) and there hasn’t yet been a time when the snow doesn’t eventually melt, bringing with it the spring and the lovely days of “not yet grey

and snowing”.

It’s funny though. I don’t remember the day to day or year to year weather. I’m almost always inappropriately dressed. I choose not to watch the weather. (or the news for that matter these days). I actually suggest to some of my wellness clients, when they say they don’t have 30 minutes a day to workout, to try to stop talking about the weather and see if they can reclaim a few minutes to themselves. Really. Try it. It’s hard to not talk about the weather. On the other hand, major storms have this nostalgic quality. Because even though I don't remember the daily weather, I do remember where I was during the storm of March 1993. I was out of graduate school and working at Justin’s restaurant on Lark Street (yes I remember you and no, I won’t tell) when I worked for several straight days because much of the staff couldn’t make it in from surrounding towns. The Thruway was closed and cars everywhere were towed. We were a little beacon of light for folks on foot, looking for a meal, something to end that “cooped up” feeling with a burger or some jerk chicken. This was pre-internet so one could really go stir crazy at home. In advance of the blizzard of 1996, I rushed to Crossgates Mall, refusing to leave the former sporting goods store without a pair of mounted cross country skis, cause gosh darnit, I was going to cross country ski in Washington Park after the snow dump. In fact, I did ski that next day, and only that day, making it the most expensive ski day ever. Also true is that those skis are still in my basement even though Joe keeps trying to throw them away. I insist I might use them again. I mean it’s only been 22 years. If you lived here a while, you can’t possibly forget where you were back in 1987 and the crazy October 4th snowstorm that buried the area in downed trees, power lines and left much of the area without power. I was a junior in college at U Albany, but living in a downtown apartment, and took refuge by camping out in the lounges of on-campus dorms which had access to food, power and thankfully, showers. I can’t know at the time of this writing if the storm of MLK weekend 2019 will go down as a remarkable one or simply typical winter weekend in upstate New York. What I do know is that we have a lot of toilet paper, my episodes of Outlander are all cued up and I’ve pinned a whole lot of great summer vacation ideas. And, remembering that my son is still home from college on break, suggested he figure out a way to get me some Starbucks without me having to change out of my pajamas. Until tomorrow that is, when I just might go cross country skiing.
