THE OUR TOWNE SPOTLIGHT SHINES ON... BECKER’S FARM GARDEN CENTER Becker’s Farm Garden Center, located in East Greenbush, is a fifth generation family owned and operated business. In 1870, Reinhardt Becker purchased his first 5 acres. Little did he know that his business venture and love for farming would continue for over 140 years! He began a small fruit and vegetable business selling his produce at the wholesale farmers in Albany, Troy and Menands. As the demand for fresh produce started to grow, Reinhardt realized he could not produce enough with the land he had, so he purchased adjoining properties in 1894. In 1931, when the founding father of Becker’s Farm passed away, his son Frank Becker continued to grow fresh fruits and vegetables. By 1963 when his son took over the farm, expanded even more. Most of all of the produce was sold locally along routes 9 & 20. By the late 1970’s, retail grocery chains were providing large amounts of lower cost produce to the consumer. Frank Jr. recognized the farm needed to change its focus; and built a small greenhouse in 1980 to grow bedding plants. With its immediate success, he quickly built two more greenhouses and began to concentrate efforts on plants. In 1989 Frank’s son, David, returned to the farm and has expanded the greenhouses and nursery. With David’s son Mark now involved, David can concentrate on production while Mark oversees Retail Sales & Management. Becker’s Farm Garden Center currently operates 11 greenhouses that total over 75,000 sq. ft. of growing area. David notes “It is an exciting time of year around the farm and we are eager to greet our loyal and new customers for our 144th year!” Becker's Farm is devoted to growing the highest quality plants and with their experience and knowledge, can direct you to the plants that suit your needs and taste! By growing their own annuals and perennials, Becker's Farm can ensure the highest quality is available for the consumer. Spring has sprung and Becker’s Farm is ready for all of your planting needs! Well known for the “largest baskets around,” they fill the greenhouses and nursery with large quantities and varieties to suite any taste. They offer plants for every part of your exterior landscape. A huge variety of robust annual flowers, herbs and vegetables are transplanted daily. By mid-April, large selections of trees and shrubs will arrive and later in April they offer a huge selection of perennials. By early May, a large assortment of Weeks and Star roses will find its way to Becker’s Farm. As a certified retailer of Proven Winner plants, they sell a series of plants that are specifically chosen to thrive in our region & climate. Varieties like Bacopa, Callibrochoa, Osteospermum, Scaveola and Supertunia are all popular favorites among beginner and master gardeners. The Supertunia is famous for its large size and low maintenance.

“Is the Bible the chicken or the egg? By Greg Ballard Lead Pastor, Grace Fellowship Church Greenbush Campus gballard@gracefellowship.com

Spring is here, and winter’s iciness is finally giving way to warmer winds. Soon trees will be sprouting leaves and flowers will be blooming. Springtime represents hope, new life, and new beginnings. It’s also a time of tradition and celebration. Easter brings egg hunts, family dinners, and baskets overflowing with candy. But do we truly understand the essence of this great day? Sure, it’s more than chocolate bunnies and painted eggs. Yet when asked why we celebrate Easter, many of us would reply, “I’m a Christian,â€? “I’m Catholic,â€? or “It’s what my family does.â€? Lately, this question has given me pause because the answer can’t simply be about a label, a tradition, or even a book. I’ve begun to wince when I hear a sentence begin with, “The Bible says‌,â€? followed by a list of prohibitions or commandments. Thinking like this obscures the true message of the Bible, and turns Christianity into a mere set of rules. Don’t get me wrong. I love the Bible. I read it regularly because I believe it’s one of the clearest ways that we can learn about God and the world we live in. Yet if we woke up tomorrow and all the Bibles were gone, could we still have our faith? Would there still be something to believe in? Absolutely! Because the gospel is not based on the Bible—it’s actually the other way around. On Easter, we remember Christ’s sacrificial death on the cross and His glorious resurrection. The entire Christian faith— including the Bible—blossoms in all directions from this one pivotal event. The great stories of God’s relationship with mankind and of who Jesus is and what he did all flow out of the gospel. I realize that it can be easy to get hung up on things in the Bible that don’t seem to make sense or align with our values. This Easter, please don’t let that cloud your heart and mind. The real question that begs an answer not just on Easter Sunday but every day is, “Do you believe that God became man and gave His mortal life as a sacrifice for you?â€?

Did You Know...? By Nicole Henderson

‌that the latest statistics from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) puts the rate of autism-related cases in the United States at 1 in 88 children? Even more striking is the rate for boys – 1 in 54. This developmental disorder has taken center stage lately and with good reason. It's complex, it presents differently in everyone, and it requires compassion and understanding. There is a lot that we don't understand about autism spectrum disorder (ASD), but there is much that we do. April is Autism Awareness Month, so let's start there. According to the CDC, people with ASDs struggle with social interaction, communication, and/or behavior. Sometimes it's only one area; sometimes all three. The variability is what creates the "spectrum." Some have "classic" Autism also known as autism disorder. Others have Asperger's, which is marked by social interaction difficulties and unusual behaviors/interests. And a last group has pervasive developmental disorder –not otherwise specified (PDD-NOS), which is known for carrying fewer and milder symptoms than autism disorder. While scientists are not sure of the exact cause of ASDs, the CDC has cited a couple of factors that put children at higher risk of developing it. These include genetic factors, chromosomal conditions, some medications taken by the mother during pregnancy, and possibly premature birth and low birth weight. Research is currently underway to uncover more. Early diagnosis is the first step and can be done through a visit to your doctor. Know the best part? The evaluation is free, and so are the services if your child qualifies. Because while there is no magic pill that will take an ASD away, there are many therapies that are available that can lessen symptoms. Occupational therapy, behavioral therapy, speech therapy, and music therapy are just a sampling of the ways to manage an ASD. The earlier autism is identified, the better the chances of helping your child to succeed. The CDC website has a good resource that offers more information on screening and diagnosis (http://www.cdc.gov/ncbddd/autism/screening.html). So with all of these children being diagnosed, what can we do? One local organization that is pitching in to help the ASD cause is the East Greenbush Kiwanis. On Tuesday, June 10th at 6:30pm, they are hosting a kickball game and barbeque at the East Greenbush Town Park. Admission is $12 and proceeds will go to a great national organization called Autism Speaks (http://www.autismspeaks.org). Another source of support, whose home is right in Rensselaer, is a very active volunteer, not-for-profit organization called STRIDE Adaptive Sports (http:// www.stride.org). Their mission, according to their website, is to provide more than "8,000 FREE adaptive sport and recreation lessons annually to children & individuals with special needs." This includes people with autism and any other special need. They also sponsor events like the upcoming Stride 4 STRIDE 4th Annual 5K Run/Community Walk N Roll on Saturday, June 21st at the Albany Riverfront/Corning Preserve. Visit their website for more details. Autism Awareness Month helps shine a light, a blue light, on this disorder that affects so many. April 2nd is World Autism Awareness Day and the day to "Light It Up Blue." Buildings and landmarks will light up in blue to show their support, and you can wear blue too.

Closer to home, there are many local resources out there to lend support. Here are just a few: •Autism Society of the Greater Capital Region – http://www.albanyautism. org/ •Parent to Parent of New York State – http://parenttoparentnys.org/offices/ capital-district/ •Special Needs Parent Support Group (for East Greenbush School District Residents) – http://www.egcsd.org/pps/family_resources.php For those of you who are struggling with a diagnosis in your family, you are not alone. Many families have been touched by autism. The most important thing to understand about autism is that having the disorder is not a death sentence or even tragic. Having an ASD just means you see the world and process information in a different way. The best thing we can all do is find a way to meet in the middle.

TICK TOCK

FOR

TICK TALK

The impact of ticks and the nasty diseases they carry cannot be overstated in our area. Tick-borne diseases are considered endemic here for both pet and human. We are pleased to be joining forces with the Lyme Action Network to present TICK TALK… Lyme Disease and Beyond, a free public round table discussion about ticks and the diseases they carry affecting both people and pets. Speakers are Holly Ahern, an associate professor of microbiology at the State University of New York Adirondack in Queensbury, Chris Fisk from the Lyme Action Network and Nassau Veterinary Clinic veterinarians Drs. Lisa Dietrich and Carolyn Sanford. The event will be held 7-9 p.m., Tuesday, May 13, 2014, at the Comfort Inn and Suites, 99 Miller Rd. (exit 10 from I-90 east). Lyme disease in people can be devastating. According to the Empire State Lyme Disease Association, if undetected and untreated, the bacteria can spread, affecting the heart, nervous system, tendons, joints and other organs. What makes Lyme disease particularly difficult is its symptoms closely resemble other diseases, leading to misdiagnosis. Its symptoms can look like Alzheimer’s disease, menopause, chronic fatigue syndrome, Parkinson’s disease, Lou Gehrig’s disease, fibromyalgia, multiple sclerosis and other diseases. It’s believed that from 15 to 30 percent of people infected with Lyme may develop a chronic illness. A long list of symptoms can range from weight change, hair loss, and sore throat, to anxiety, upset stomach, pelvic pain and memory loss. Symptoms might show up quickly but they may not be seen for days, weeks or even months after infection. What can additionally compound the infection is a co- or secondary infection, such as Babesia, Bartonella, Anaplasma, Ehrilichia or other disease. Among pets, the concerns are equally disturbing. Lyme symptoms can include kidney failure, anorexia, swollen joints, lameness, or just not being him or herself. It’s likely you may never see the infected tick. You or your pet may be bitten by a tick nymph. These immature ticks are about the size of a poppy seed and are usually active in the spring and summer. Adult ticks are mostly active in cooler weather and bites are usually painless. Make plans to join us to learn more about these harmful diseases and what can be done for prevention and treatment. This important presentation is part of Nassau Veterinary Clinic’s mission to create healthier bonds between people and their pets.

SHRIMP PLATTERS FOR YOUR

Spring Holiday Celebrations

Your Landscaping Answers From A-Z by Steve Noel It’s that time of the year again to put the snow shovels away and get out the old wheel barrow and tarp so you can get your property in tip top shape. I know you are ready to get out there after this long winter! There is a long list of tasks that need to be completed to get our properties into shape in early spring. As the snow melts, sticks and branches will begin to appear on the dormant brown grass. Leftover brown leaves that held on until late fall will be found scattered around the lawn and tucked under our bushes. Soon the budded trees will begin to flower and the grass will turn a beautiful green color. As spring perennials begin to bloom, everyone will be in a much brighter mood... Nothing is better than pulling up to your beautifully landscaped and freshly mulched yard. Not only is it rewarding, but it increases the value of your home substantially. From landscape design, rebuilding your patio or walkway, water feature installation around your patio or just general landscaping questions- I am your guy. I will personally meet with you for an estimate, and also do the contracted work. We are a small team that pay special attention to detail and I guarantee our work. As you read this, we are currently booking for the 2014 season... don’t delay. Due to the overwhelming response and repeat customer base, we are scheduling a limited number of new customers for 2014. Through fall, I will be providing free advice to Our Towne readers in this column. Just e-mail me your landscaping questions and I will personally answer them in Our Towne. Happy Spring!

Should Buyers Use a Real Estate Professional? by Catherine Graziano

With just the stroke of a few keys, you can find countless resources on the Internet to help you in your search for a new home. Besides property listings, you can find out about specific communities, schools and mortgage options. With this wealth of information at your disposal, do you really need a real estate professional to represent you? Absolutely. Whether this is your first home or your last, it is probably the single most important and expensive purchase you will ever make. That is why you deserve a real estate professional with the knowledge and skill to assist you in making informed decisions and to negotiate on your behalf. A sales professional can familiarize you with the processes involved in buying a home & alert you to potential risks. They will help you determine a price range that will fit your budget, explain the benefit of getting prequalified by a mortgage representative, help you comprehend the total costs involved, as well as provide tremendous moral support. It always helps to first brainstorm and prioritize a list of all the features you are looking for. Start with the basics including style of house, size, number of bathrooms and bedrooms, desired neighborhood, commutes to jobs and proximity to schools, parks and retail services. When you have found the perfect home, they can help you determine a realistic offer price based on a general market overview and recent sales of similar properties. Next is to submit a formal offer including property inspection and financing contingencies for your protection. The negotiating process requires skill, experience, and complete objectivity. For example, a Real estate professional can provide the expertise you need while sticking to the facts. When I go to the negotiating table, I go fully prepared, armed with the right information, keeping your best interests in mind. Your agent should walk you through the entire closing process, and do their best to ensure your deal closes smoothly without unnecessary costs. Something easy to overlook is our familiarity with the complexity and risks inherent in the process. When complex questions arise, a sales professional can help you quickly locate professionals whose services you may require, such as home inspectors, engineers, surveyors and lenders. As your single point of contact, your Real Professional can manage the entire transaction including coordinating inspections, keeping in touch with the other real estate professionals, managing the documentation for the loan process, monitoring deadlines associated with contingencies, providing applicable paperwork, estimating closing costs, and helping prepare for a smooth and uneventful closing. If you are beginning the process of buying or selling a home, consider involving a Real Estate professional. Call me today for exceptional personal service. If you are looking to sell your existing home, I can help with that, too.

The race, which attracted a record field of 5,045 last year, will be held on Saturday, May 31 at 9:45 a.m. at the Empire State Plaza. “This is a terrific event for first time runners. The atmosphere of camaraderie and the motivation derived from participating with Olympic and world champions guarantee a wonderful experience, said Event Director George Regan, noting that last year’s field included women from 28 states and 28 countries, ranging in age from eight to 80. Participants can also sign up for the Training Challenge through April 7. Now in its fourth year, the Training Challenge is a 10-week program for runners of all abilities that follows an enhanced version of the well-known Couch to 5K Running Plan. The program — which has novice, intermediate and advanced options as well as an introduction to sportwalking — gives participants access to injury prevention experts, certified coaches and nutritionists. It involves weekly exercise sessions on Mondays and Saturdays as well as an individual workout. The 5K isn’t the only even taking place that weekend. The CapitalCare/CDPHP Health & Fitness Expo occurs the day before and the morning of the race at the Empire State Plaza's Conventional Hall. It features an array of family-friendly health and fitness offerings ranging from massage therapy and discounted running gear to chiropractic services and free health screenings. First up on race day is the USA 5K Race Walk Championships at 8 a.m., featuring America’s best race walkers on the Plaza. Later, spectators can participate in a free SportWalk Clinic at 11:30 a.m. on the Concourse and try sportwalking at the 3K Community Walk at noon on Madison Avenue. The Freihofer’s 4th annual Junior 3K Run, slated to start at 11:15 a.m. on Madison Avenue, is for girls and boys between the ages of nine and 14 and serves as a fundraiser for the Children’s Hospital at Albany Medical Center. A treasured community event, the Freihofer's 26th annual Community Walk begins at noon. There is no cost for participating and all funds go directly to the hundreds of regional not-for-profits that participate. To date, more than $1.3 million has been raised. The Freihofer’s 27th annual Kids’ Run features a series of free mini road races ranging in distance from 50m to one mile. The event is held on the Plaza and kicks off at noon. The Time’s They Are A Changing I’m taking a break from serious negotiations with my son, my first born, who is finagling to arrange his first “boy/ girl we’re just friends” movie outing. I can’t even utter the D word…because it isn’t a date (as I lie to myself). It was a minute ago when he’d blush at the mere mention of a girlfriend, avoided them in public and even told me that he was not interested. However, the full laundry basket, asking for a haircut appointment and face wash, even waking up on time to make sure he’s fresh & clean tells me something is up. The very first conversation we had about girls as “more than friends” was 3 years ago. He was in 5th grade, we were in the car. He asked point blank “When can I date?” I was so happy to be facing forward so he couldn’t see my look of complete horror. I asked him “Is there someone you want to date?” His answer was an emphatic “NOOOO – Oh My God Mom” so, I immediately relaxed, while my daughter (7) just rolled her eyes. As parents, we know the toughest questions come out of nowhere & I’ve always tried to be direct & honest. I took a deep breath & decided to lay down the “Rules According To Mom”. •No dating till high school, •You must introduce her to mom & dad as a girlfriend & her parents must know •You need to have a part time job to pay for pizza, movies & bowling as I’m not financing his new chickie (I didn’t say chickie just thought it) •Hardest – You must have real telephone or in-person conversations – it cannot be a text-only girlfriend. He seemed okay with the list & moved on to “What’s for dinner?” Crisis averted!

Personal Injury: Automobile, Construction Site, Slip and Fall Injuries, Contingency Fee. Real Property: Boundary Line, Easement and other Property Disputes, Residential Real Estate Closings. Construction Law: Negotiation and Preparation of Contracts, Mechanics Liens, Contract Termination, Litigation of Disputes. Commercial Litigation: Contract Disputes, Enforcement of Judgments, Business and Partnership Disputes, Collection. General Practice Areas: Vehicle & Traffic matters, Estate Planning, and more. Appeals: Civil and Criminal—State Court.

Nathan never really asked again and I was comforted when a friend with 2 girls (who’s also a teacher in our district) told me that the current & very talked about topic is that “Nate’s mother did not let him date” So, apparently my ground rules had been working for him & were keeping the girls at some safe distance. Fast forward 3 years…my newly funny, taller, more socially comfortable teenager spends most of his non-school, non-sports time on his phone texting. I’ve checked his in-box periodically to see who he was chatting with – and a few weeks ago a singular trend began appearing – one solitary name. He asked to talk to us – to renegotiate the RULES…shorten the terms of his dating timeline and asked if he could take a girl to the 8th grade dance “just as friends” to which we reasonably agreed. We asked if there was someone special – he said he thought so. (Collective aww!) This is one of those pinnacle parenting moments– when you realize that your baby has grown up enough to connect with another in a special way. I can only hope we have been good relationship rolemodels, that he feels confident and self-assured. We can only advise him that girls are a unique creature (to say the least) and sometimes misunderstandings will occur (if he only knew the half of it). But, he’ll survive the good, the bad, the heartache & the sweetness. And hopefully, I will too. It’s agreed. I’ll drive to the movies but not go in, they will go dutch – but I’ll secretly pay for popcorn at the last minute. And even though he’s now several inches taller – he hugged me – said “Love Ya”. He looked back to me as he left the room, “You’re not going to do something to embarrass me, right?” “ Who Me?”

SAVE THE DATE! OK5K RACE READY TO RUN SATURDAY, JUNE 7 The Kinderhook Bank OK5k Race Committee has begun preparing for this year’s road race to be held on Saturday, June 7. Now in its 16th year, what began as a modest race of 75 local runners has grown to a community showcase event supported by dozens of organizational and individual sponsors, scores of volunteers, family participants, youth races, and over 600 runners and walkers from a 50mile radius of Columbia County. As it has for the past decade, this year’s race features the 5-kilometer race at 9:00 am preceded by the Kid’s One-Mile Race at 8:15 am (ages 4-12) and a 50/100-yard Reading Ramble at 8:40 am (ages 6 and under). All races start and end in the vicinity of the Kinderhook Village Square and highlight the village’s farms and orchards, historical sites, and charming neighborhoods. All proceeds from the race go directly back to the community. Race Director, Dan Curtin, notes that since its inception in 1999, the race has donated nearly $75,000 to local non-profit and charitable organizations such as the Historical Society, Fire and Rescue Squads, Libraries, Food Pantry, and Marion Stegman Fund. To learn more, visit the race website at http://ok5krace.org . If you would like to serve on the race committee to help organize this year’s event or would like to volunteer for race day duties (no running experience required), email at kinderhookok5krace@gmail.com.

Word of Mouth By Joseph R. Lapinski, D.D.S. Dear Dr. Lapinski: My son was on a baseball team that you sponsored last year & I heard you are nice. Anyway, when I called your office for an appointment, I was confused. She said my first visit would only be an exam. I usually get a cleaning too. Also, she said you take my insurance but don’t “participate so I didn’t schedule anything. Janet, via website Dear Mia: First of all, Thank You for considering our office – we are always welcoming new patients and love to know that you heard of us through one of our team sponsorships. To answer your question. Early on in my practice – I decided the best way to get to know a patient was to see them for an hour on their 1st visit. At that appointment I review your dental history, chart old & new dental work, conduct thorough periodontal evaluations, take any necessary x-rays plus have time to answer any questions you might have and discuss the options you have to consider. Every patient has different needs, so, I like to see all new adult patients before scheduling a hygiene visit. Patients appreciate the dedicated time, it keeps my schedule running on time, so it’s a policy I stand behind. Insurance is a confusing topic & I’m admittedly not an expert like my benefits coordinator. In a nutshell, my office takes & processes any insurance benefits that allows you to choose your own dentist. We collect estimated co-pays at the time of service based on what we know about your benefit. There are very few plans that won’t reimburse me directly, but it’s not the norm. I diagnose dental treatment based on what I see & tell you what I think is in your best interest, give you options, & let you decide. We try to “pre-authorize work so there are no surprises. As a consumer, you can only make informed decisions when you have the information. We process claims & advocates for our patients. Ultimately, exemplary Customer Service is our goal. We hope you’ll consider us for your dental needs. If not, good luck, but know that our door is always open. Please continue to ask your questions. We look forward to meeting you in 2014!

There are many ways to celebrate Earth Day. Plant a tree, clean up a park or playground, pick up roadside trash, clean your own property or participate in a local recycling event. You should find several events to choose from and all offer responsible recycling to help make sure our landfills are not filled with hazardous materials or items that can be reused or repurposed. Scrapster will co-host a major recycling event on Saturday May 10th from 9am – 12pm at Shank & Falvey Insurance on Route 50 in Burnt Hills. Even if you have to travel a little, it is a great excuse to visit Saratoga County and make a day out of it. Please call for more information or check our website for more details on what we will be accepting that day AT NO COST TO YOU! The list of items is huge and includes Air Conditioners, Dehumidifies, Computers, Televisions, any type or size of household appliance, car batteries, any type of scrap metal, wire, and much, much more. We hope to see you there. Can’t make it? Call us to schedule an appointment for us to come to you! For us at Scrapster, every day is Earth Day. With our scrap metal recycling, all appliances and other metal items we pick up are taken apart and separated into basic components (wire, circuit boards, motors, etc.) for more effective re-use. We operate our junk removal service the same way…donating items like clothing and good quality furniture and separating cardboard boxes, metal, magazines, etc. so they are all recycled properly. Scrapster is local family owned business which provides a NO COST scrap metal and appliance pick up and removal service. We also offer LOW COST junk removal and clean outs. We are convenient, reliable, insured, and (bonus!) we do all the work. Please give us a call today at (518) 505-5055
