The Our Towne Spotlight Shines On... Winding Brook Country Club Winding Brook Country Club is a family owned and operated 18hole, par 70, semi-private golf course that is open to the public. Spanning over 265 acres in Northern Columbia County, the golf course was designed and constructed by Paul J. Roth, the grandfather of Al Austin (current owner) 53 years ago. Only 15 minutes south of East Greenbush in Valatie, it is another option for your next golf outing, fundraiser, special event, dinner or drinks at the White Horse Tavern. The beautiful Olympic size swimming pool & large kiddie pool is used by country club members and those who wish to purchase a separate pool membership alone. The grounds are beautiful and peaceful. One of the few familyowned & operated golf courses in New York State; they take great pride in the property and what they offer the community. It was in 1984, that Al Austin decided to join his grandfather in the capacity of Vice President and Manager. After 29 years, Al is now the owner and President of Winding Brook joined by his family; wife Kate, son Bud and wife Meredith, and daughter Katee. After 2 years of construction that began in 1961, Winding Brook was one of the first courses in the Northeast to install a complete automatic irrigation system for fairways, tees, and greens. The course was modeled after St. Andrew’s in Scotland, where links are very tricky and interesting. The course meets the requirements of the US Golf Association and pro’s such as Arnold Palmer, Ken Venturi & Bob Goalby have played the course. The golf course acquired its name from the “winding brook that lazily flows through both the front and back nines, surrounded by large pines – all of which were planted by hand, bordering the fairways and the spring-fed ponds has a private feel with breathtaking scenery. Each hole at Winding Brook has its own individual characteristic that is guaranteed to offer any golfer a challenging and picturesque round of golf. Winding Brook’s unique layout lends character to its serene setting. From beginner to low handicapper, it is a course everyone can enjoy, play and appreciate. Larry Markowski, PGA Professional, is the Winding Brook Country Club’s Golf Pro. There is a fully stocked, and very reasonable, Pro Shop that is open to the public. Inside the Clubhouse, the White Horse Tavern is open to the public daily (weather permitting), serving lunch and dinner specials Tuesday through Sunday. The White Horse Tavern provides a quaint setting of knotty pine walls, offering a cozy and relaxing place for a drink and delicious meal. During the summer, take advantage of the warm weather by dining out on the deck overlooking the 1st fairway and Olympic-sized swimming pool. It’s a great place to unwind and relive the day’s round with a gorgeous panoramic view.
For 53 years, Winding Brook has been planning and hosting wedding receptions, golf outings, retirement parties, anniversaries, class reunions, and banquets. The private dining room consists of a vaulted ceiling, exposed beams, and large stone fireplace, along with numerous glass windows bringing the outside elements in, offering a warm and comfortable atmosphere. Many community groups return year after year for their major fundraisers. For 20 years, The New York State Police have held a charity golf tournament for Make A Wish, The Schodack & East Greenbush Fire Companies have also held many benefit golf outings & fundraisers, as well as The Columbia County Sherriff’s Benevolent Association. Winding Brook has expanded its services to offer U PICK UP CATERING. Now, you can take the professionally prepared quality food of Winding Brook home for your parties and gatherings. They request only 3 days’ notice for your order. That’s convenient! You’ll find the prices are not only competitive with those of local grocery stores, but more affordable. Easter is right around the corner. So, get the family together for some good old-fashioned Easter fun and bring them to Winding Brook for Easter dinner. For some, it’s an Easter tradition. Year after year, many of the same families attend the Easter Buffet. It is now an Austin family tradition to greet & host local families who come back year after year. Why not take this year off of cooking & entertaining and just sit back, relax & enjoy the day? The Easter Deluxe Buffet with Carving and Pasta Stations is continuously served between 12 and 4 on Easter Sunday, April 5th. It’s by Reservation Only. There is something for everyone! The golf course is set to open the week of Easter‌but they will have to see what Mother Nature has in store. Please call and make your reservation for Easter dinner & certainly visit the website: www.windingbrookcountryclub.com for more details. Discover why Winding Brook Country Club & the Austin Family have not only sustained, but succeeded, in Our Towne as a family business for 53 years. Follow them on Facebook & Twitter, too! East Greenbush Bowling Center Camps, Leagues, Daily Specials, Youth Programs... Lots of News to Share! East Greenbush Bowling Center was purchased by partners Bill Cornell, Marvin Sontz, and Don & Mandy Herrington in 2013 They have been well received by the community and have made great improvements in the facility, food and beverage offerings, and also added great specials. The center has 32 lanes, all with bumpers available. Light weight balls and ramps are available to make the experience enjoyable for kids of any age! The snack bar serves food that you would not expect to find in most bowling alleys. Fresh made pizza, incredible hand packed burgers, wings, salads, sandwiches, and quesadillas highlight the menu in addition to the standard bowling center fare. A full bar and lounge is available for the adults serving a variety of draft, bottled beers, and liquors. The center also has a game room and is home to Ray’s Pro Shop , where you can get your own bowling ball professionally fitted. East Greenbush Bowling Center specializes in Children’s Birthday Parties. They offer several packages that include pizza, soda, bowling and other add-ons that take the pressure off the parents! All parties have a host to assist, and parents don’t get stuck having to clean up the house afterwards! East Greenbush Bowl is also home to a thriving Junior Bowling Program. Even the “un-athletic child” can succeed and play at this sport! It is similar to most youth sports. Children starting around age 4 can sign up and receive basic instruction starting with a league where the bumpers are used and coaches teach the basic skills, with the goal of graduating the child to bowling without the use of bumpers. The Program is available on Friday afternoons after school, and on Saturday Mornings. In addition, there are travel teams, and other events on local, state and national levels that the junior bowlers can compete in at all ages. Scholarship money is awarded to the bowlers, and there are many opportunities for additional scholarships. Many of the juniors go on to bowl in collegiate programs around the country, some under scholarship programs. The East Greenbush Bowl offers a summer season program called “Kids Bowl Free.” This program is designed by bowling centers to give back to the community and provide a safe, secure, and fun way for kids to spend time during the summer. Register for this program at KIDSBOWLFREE.COM. It’s an un-beatable deal! I can’t think of anything that gives as much value for your entertainment dollar. Also, this summer during the weeks of August the camp operates from 8am to 5 pm each weekday. The price starts at $155 and varies depending on which options and starting times you choose. Campers and their parents choose whether they will be in attendance from 8AM until 4PM or 9AM until 5PM, depending on their schedules. The Camp offers a wide variety of daily activities to keep children engaged the entire time they are with us! We will do arts and crafts in addition to supplying bowling instruction, lunch, and a snack each and every day. They also have a breakfast option for $10 for the whole week! T-shirts (a $10 value) are FREE this year for those who participate in both weeks of camp. The camp is co-directed by Kelly and Becky Hewitt. You can meet them at “MEET THE COUNSELORS NIGHT”Wednesday, August 5th at 6:30PM. Spaces are limited so reserve you spot now by going to by going to EGBOWL.COM where you can find detailed info and print a registration form. Weekly Specials include: Tuesday Night: $10.00 per person all you can bowl & eat pizza. Wednesday Night: “Quarter Mania” $8 admission and your game, shoes, pizza, soda & wings are all 25cents each! Thursday: All You Can Bowl from 8:30-11:30, WITH UNLIMITED Pizza & Wings for $15 per person. Saturday:Noon-6:30pm Pizza, Pins & Pop. Up to 5 people for $49.95 gets bowling for 2 hours, shoes, large pizza & pitcher. For the late night crowd, the center hosts Cosmic Bowling every Friday and Saturday Night starting at 11pm. The lights go out, and a live DJ plays your favorite songs with videos, a light show, and all while entertaining the crowd with games and prizes! The owners of East Greenbush Bowl are always looking to assist non-profits and community groups with raising money. Give them a call at 518-477-9306 or visit EGBOWL.COM to find out more! Make sure you Like them on Facebook, too!
Summer Camp at the YMCA By Shannon Romanowski Greenbush Y Executive Director Every spring parents and children around the capital region find themselves searching for that perfect summer day camp. As a mother of two (boys ages 12 and 9), my family and I go through this same process each year. The unique part for us is that my career has developed through YMCA overnight and day camp programming. My experiences as a camper, staff, Camp Director and now Executive Director have given me the ability to understand the importance of making this a family decision — one that fits our children’s needs and expectations as well as our own as parents. Regardless of the type of camp you’re looking for, there are specific items parents should look for in a camp. First and foremost, you want a camp regulated by the county’s Department of Health (DOH). This assures you that the camp is regulated and held to the standards of care created by your state health department. Each camp is audited before and during the summer to ensure that standards are met and certifications and trainings conducted. Beyond DOH regulations, ask if the camp is accredited by the American Camping Association (ACA). The ACA carries great weight in the camping world, with its high standards for programming and safety. The next step is learning what programs and activities the camp offers. The best day camps offer a variety of activities that allow your child to experience new things. Parents will want to ask about open house days or schedule a tour with the Camp Director. At the Y, we offer camp tours with the Camp Director and events that highlight our summer day camp programs. Summer Camp is a place where your child can make new friends, build confidence, gain independence, explore new challenges and opportunities, and create lifelong memories. At the Y, we say that we nurture the potential in every child because we mean it. For more information about our Summer Day Camp, Teen Travel Camp, Counselor in Training Program or Specialty Camps call 477-2570.

Eric Renaud, M.A.c,
Our Towne Welcomes Upstate Community Acupuncture Upstate Community Acupuncture opens in East Greenbush Eric Renaud, licensed acupuncturist, has recently relocated his growing community acupuncture practice to Van Den Houten Square, 568 Columbia Turnpike, East Greenbush. The new location offers ample parking, and the additional space needed to comfortably treat more patients. Asked about what community acupuncture is, Eric replied, “Community acupuncture is the fastest growing style of acupuncture clinic across the country, and is similar to how acupuncture is practiced in Asia. Patients do not need to undress, and sit in a comfortable reclining chair in a large room where other patients are simultaneously receiving a treatment. The shared space helps to make acupuncture treatment less intimidating to new patients, more accessible and affordable to more people in the community. In practice for 15 years, Eric notes that acupuncture can treat many conditions, including musculoskeletal pain, headaches, menstrual issues, digestive disorders, anxiety/depression, and much more. Some long-term patients come in for an occasional ‘tune-up’ just to reduce stress, kick start weight-loss, or improve their sleep. One of the benefits of acupuncture treatment that many patients notice is reduced stress and improved mood – something everyone can use after this long winter! Although the exact mechanism for how acupuncture works is unknown, acupuncture treatments have been shown to regulate the nervous, circulatory and endocrine systems simultaneously, and the National Institute of Health has scientifically reviewed and approved acupuncture as an effective treatment for many conditions. Upstate Community Acupuncture currently has over 160 positive testimonials on their website explaining how acupuncture has helped local patients with a wide range of issues. The only way to know if acupuncture will help you is to give it a try. The best thing about community acupuncture is that it offers an affordable and easy way to try acupuncture, so you can find out for yourself! To learn more, or to schedule a treatment, visit his website www.StuckUpstate.com

Dear Our Towne Magazine Readers, Now that April & Spring have arrived, we can enjoy the smell of fresh air, monitor the piles of snow as they disappear and anticipate the daffodils & tulips making their way back towards the blue sky and sunshine. This is truly a time to relish the fresh start that spring offers us. A time of renewal and hope. It would be hard to find a person sorry to see this winter become a faint memory. This issue has many pages dedicated to summer activities and camps for kids. Following the colorful advertisements, you can read about some of the programs in more depth. Camp offers kids many benefits; a chance to develop independence from family and current peer group, gain new skills, discover new passions, make new friends and develop character. Camp gives kids the chance to take risks and challenge who they are and what they are good at any well-run camp program is making sure children have the time of their lives. Summer camp is a much needed break from the academic year where creativity, adventure, thrills, smiles and plain old good times are the priority. As I recently reminded my oldest daughter, “enjoy this year as a camper, because it will be your last. Next year you will be expected to have a part time job.” Well, you should have seen her teenage face drop to the floor. She quickly negotiated another year as a camper at her most favorite place on earth, arguing that she could be a “Counselor in Training.” The funny thing about that is that we pay for her to be a “CIT.” As with most topics in our house, we will decide when the time gets closer. She has a year to develop a proposal & game plan for when her summers as a camper ends, and a paid worker begin. For now, we have booked her two weeks at Camp Chingachgook where she will make friends from across the globe, challenge herself and make lifetime memories. She will try activities like archery, riflery, water skiing, mountain climbing.... anything her heart desires, in the beautiful adirondacks on the shore of Lake George. Her spirit soars at Camp Chingachgook. I miss her terribly when she is gone, I am thrilled for her that she is getting a chance to learn new things, meet people outside of her community, become more confident, and make memories that will last forever. This issue also welcomes many new advertisers. From Acupuncture, Massage, Seamless Gutters, Garages, Pizza Parlors, Home Repairs and Dog & Cat Grooming.... There are many small businesses in Our Towne that need your support and business to survive. Please keep your money in the communities that make-up Our Towne. Don’t forget to LIKE Our Towne Magazine on Facebook for daily updates on news, advertiser specials & events going on around Our Towne. Thank you for reading and I wish you all a wonderful April!

Have You Heard... Property ByTax Exemptions Jennifer Hixon Most Our Towne readers are familiar with the STAR program, which reduces school taxes for qualifying homeowners. There are several lesser-known programs that can reduce your property taxes if you qualify. Senior citizens, veterans, persons with disabilities, and farmers may be eligible for partial exemptions. These exemptions are not automatic. Eligibility requirements and filing deadlines vary by municipality. To receive these exemptions, you must apply to your local assessor. The exemption for senior citizens is generally intended for those 65 and older whose incomes are below $29,000. Some municipalities may have a slightly higher income limit.

There are several exemptions for veterans. One is for those who have served in a designated time of war or received expeditionary medals. One is for those who served during the Cold War. The third is for those who purchase property with eligible funds received upon discharge from active duty.
$10.00 off Full Head Highlights
The exemption for persons with disabilities is generally available to those who have documented evidence of their disability and who have incomes less than $29,000. Some municipalities may have a slightly higher income limit.
PROM Up-Do $10.00 off
Farmers, or those who lease their land to farmers, may be eligible for tax reduction on qualifying agricultural land or farm buildings. In most municipalities, the deadline for applying for these exemptions is March 1. Unfortunately, the deadline has passed for this year, but now is the time to inquire with your assessor to see if you might qualify, and to start gathering the materials you will need to make your application in time for next year. For more information, visit the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance website at http://www.tax.ny.gov/pit/ property/exemption/index.htm or call your local assessor. Castleton Public Library Celebrates Renovation with Open House The Castleton Public Library will officially celebrate its recent renovation on April 25, 2015, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. A ribbon cutting will be held at the Library at 12:00 p.m. with community leaders and library staff. Family entertainment, music, and refreshments will be featured, and "Then & Now" library renovation photographs will be on view. The extensive renovation of the 1,222-square foot Library offers a bright, open, updated interior, while maintaining charming touches of the building's nineteenth-century character. The Castleton Village Hall, originally constructed as a schoolhouse in 1866 and expanded later in the nineteenth century, has been the home of the Castleton Public Library since 1926. The renovation, performed by F. Palladino Builder Contractor Inc. of Castleton, was completed in November 2014. "The extensive renovation at the Castleton Public Library has given new life to a long-beloved focal point for our community," said Doreen Truesdell, Library Board of Trustees Vice President. “It’s the beginning of a brand new era for the library and the community it serves." The Open House will also give visitors an opportunity to meet Castleton Public Library's new Director, Melissa Tacke. Ms. Tacke came to Castleton Public Library in March from the Schenectady County Historical Society, where she served as Librarian/ Archivist. She has also worked for the Albany Public Library, the Adirondack Museum, and Bennington College. Tacke earned her M.S. in Information Science from the University at Albany in 2007, where she also earned a B.A. in Women's Studies and Africana Studies and a M.A. in Women's Studies. "The staff, trustees, and Friends of the Castleton Public Library are very proud to celebrate the library's renovation," said Tacke. "As a new director, to begin my work in such a lovely, newlyrenovated space is a dream come true. The improvements brought by the renovation will help us to provide a welcoming, comfortable space for our patrons and to better serve the needs of our community." The mission of the Castleton Public Library is to satisfy our community’s informational, educational, cultural and recreational needs by providing free and open access to a comprehensive range of materials, services, and programs for both adults and children. The Castleton Public Library circulates over 17,000 books, magazines, DVDs, audio materials, and electronic materials annually, and offers programs and services for children, teens, and adults. The Castleton Public Library also has access to countless resources through the Upper Hudson Library System, an association of 29 public libraries in Albany and Rensselaer Counties. The Castleton Public Library, which has been operating on a reduced schedule since September, will return to its normal hours as of April 1: Monday through Wednesday, 12:00-8:00 p.m.; Thursday and Friday, 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.; Saturday 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.; closed Sunday. Learn more about the Library at www.castletonpubliclibrary.org.

Ok5k Celebrates 17 Years this June Saturday, June 6, 2015 is the day for the 17th annual Kinderhook Bank OK5k. After 100 boys and girls, ages 4-12, run a 1 mile course at 8:15 am, the horn will sound in the Village Square at 9:00 am for the 3.1 mile OK5k. Over 600 runners of all ages, 8 year olds to 80 year olds will head down Albany Avenue, and around the block to the finish line at the Vanderpoel House in the Village Square. The OK5k brings over 1,000 participants, volunteers, and spectators to the Village Square. Over 45 local firms support the race along with the generous contribution of our major sponsor, the Kinderhook Bank, who provides money, materials, volunteers, publicity, good cheer, and even let us mess up their lawn for a day. The race features runners and walkers of all sizes, shapes, and abilities from all parts of the Capital Region and beyond. (Yes, we’ve had runners from Montana.) The 1-mile kid’s run sponsored by the Kinderhook Runners Club is dedicated to Chris Volney, a Kinderhook resident, who coached the Glencadia Youth Track team and was a volunteer coach for the Ichabod Crane track teams. His legacy lives on in the race and the many runners he nurtured along the way. Over the years, new features and events have been added. The 1-mile kid’s run was added in 2003 and 2004 welcomed the Reading Ramble, which features younger boys and girls in short sprints ending at the Kinderhook Library where they receive a book. A three-member team event was added in 2006. In 2008, the Maple Hill Milers, an after school program of the Maple Hill School District, made the OK5k their annual destination race. In 2010, the OK5k became a Grand Prix event of the United States Track and Field Association (USATF) Adirondack Division bringing outstanding runners from all over the Capital District to Kinderhook. New for 2015 is a competitive race walker division. Funds raised are reinvested wholly within the Northern Columbia County community. In the 16 year history of the Kinderhook Bank OK5k, over $84,500 has been donated to local community organizations, with over $26,000 being given to the Valatie Ecumenical Food Pantry. Other recipients include the Marian Stegman fund, the Glencadia Youth Running Club, the Valatie Rescue Squad, the Kinderhook Fire Department, the Kinderhook Santa Claus Club, the Knights of Columbus for providing course marshals, the Ichabod Crane Arts Club for providing ceramic bowls for the winners, the Kinderhook Library general fund, the Kinderhook Library Building Fund, the Valatie Library general fund, the Valatie Library Building Fund, the Kinderhook Trails Committee, the Kinderhook Running Club, Boy Scout Troop #113 and the Columbia County Historical Society.

To further promote the spirit of giving, runners are asked to bring a non perishable food item for the Food Pantry and/or gently used women’s running shoes for a running program for victims of domestic violence. One of the unique features of the race is the connection between the Ichabod Crane Art Club and the OK5k. The overall and age group winners are awarded unique and colorful bowls created by the IC Art Club students. The Art Club also creates the race poster that is displayed around town. The OK5k donates funds to the Art Club which they in turn use to purchase materials for their annual “Empty Bowls’ dinner in February. All proceeds from the dinner are given to the Valatie Ecumenical Food pantry. The OK5k also maintains a close association with the Kinderhook Runners Club (KRC). Many of the committee members and volunteers are KRC members. KRC sponsors a running clinic for new runners and those wanting to sharpen their skills beginning in April. Each Wednesday evening at 6 PM from April 15 to the OK5k, runners meet at the Ichabod Crane track. Coaches are available to assist runners, teach techniques and lead stretching exercises. Kids 5 and older have their own program in the infield of the track. New this year are lessons in race walking. All sessions are free and open to the public. Last year over 60 adults and 40 kids participated in the Wednesday night track sessions. Registration for this year’s race can be done online or by mail. Registration before May 30rd is $18 for adults and $15 for students, registration on or after May 30rd is $25. There is day of race registration from 7:00 am to 8:30 am. Links to print a registration form or to register online can be found at www.ok5krace.org The OK5k committee is composed of Alanna Almstead, Ann Birckmayer, Amy Balich, Bill Barford, Dan Curtin, Karen Dolge, Jim Grott, Ed Hamilton, John Margan, Cathy Oldrich, Kyle Patzwahl, Scott Patzwahl, Sue Pulver, Ron Rich, Natalie Stewart, Gary Van Allen, Jeni Wrightson.

She’s a Gem
The O.B. gave us 3 choices: He did surgery Monday, Tuesday & Wednesday. So, based on my due date I just needed pick one of these.
by Daryl Bart dcbart1@gmail.com
Tuesday was out. It was April 1st. Unless fate intervened, I refused to let baby girl Lapinski have a birthday on April fools day. That would be as bad as picking Leap year or Halloween. I wanted it to be her day. I couldn’t have her share with the calendar with my preconceived notion of the day.
It’s an even year. Come on, I know 2015 is not an even number, my math isn’t that bad. This is a year that my daughter turns 12. An even year for her is a big deal around here because somewhere along the way we decided that our kids could have birthdays parties for friends on the even years. Not everyone agrees with my whole alternating birthday party philosophy. I get it. But, don’t feel bad. She doesn’t suffer. With a long list of extended family: grandparents, aunts & uncles, cousins, etc...she is treated generously and has managed to fill a room with an explosion of books, crafts, clothes, hair dodads & stuffed animals, plus, well I’m not even sure myself - as it is pretty scary in there. Allie & I share April as a birthday month and Nate shares August with Joe. We usually go away somewhere in April & August - so spinning our family trips as birthday getaways is never a big stretch. My kids are pretty lucky - I’ve probably said that here before. But I think Allison is particularly lucky, thanks to me. Way, Way back (12 years ago) when we were contemplating a natural vs scheduled delivery for this little girl, we had a lot of choices to make. I was adamant that I wasn't going to leave her birth to chance. I had tried that once before only to end up with 24 hours of labor (a story all in itself) and ultimately a c-section.
That left Monday or Wednesday. Joe of course wanted Monday. It was the logical day. Why wait? A good day for a baby. I said, if we wait till Wednesday, she could cook a little longer. He said, “I’m off on Monday so I don’t have to reschedule patients” Good point but, if we pick Wednesday, I can get in one last step class at the Y before the baby (don't judge - I was all sorts of hormone wacky). Monday was March 31st; Wednesday, April 2. “Joe - it has to be Wednesday” Why? There is no way I can let her knowingly have a lifetime of a March aquamarine birthstone when an April diamond is just a day away” Joe rolled his eyes in the way only a husband can do to a wife who is a million weeks pregnant and still live and said “One of these days I might understand just an iota of how your brain works.” Well, sometimes you just have to think ahead. I knew she’d appreciate it ...someday. So birthday party themes are in negotiation right now. I think I’ve just agreed to a gaggle of pre teens with movies and a sleepover. I won’t say it will be easy or restful - but it will be worth it, especially since I won’t have to do it for a few more years. The truth is. I get the gift of her sparkly brilliance every day...she would have been a diamond no matter which day she arrived.

Word of Mouth By Joseph R. Lapinski, D.D.S.
WWW.LAPINSKIDENTAL.COM Dear Dr. Lapinski: I was given the option of doing a bridge or an implant to replace a missing tooth, I am not sure why one is better or worse than the other. Can you explain the difference? R.D. Dear R.D.: Side by side, bridges and implants are both good options to replace a missing tooth. Each option has their strengths and weaknesses. An implant is a titanium screw that is placed into the bone to substitute for a missing root. The implant is usually placed by an oral surgeon or a periodontist in a minor surgical procedure. The implant allows for a free standing restoration solution that does not rely on the adjacent teeth for support. The main requirement for an implant is good bone support in the jaw with minimum bone height, width and density to help ensure the implant is permanent and successful. Once you heal from that procedure (several months) the restoring dentist (someone like me) goes forward making WKH SHUPDQHQW FURZQ LQ D VWDJH SURFHVV ¹ ¿UVW WDNLQJ DQ LPSUHVVLRQ RI WKH DUHD DQG WKHQ SHUPDQHQWO\ FHPHQWLQJ the new tooth into place. With a bridge, we use the teeth on either side of the missing tooth as anchors for the bridge unit. The most basic bridges are 3 units and include a crown (anchor) on either side and a pontic (false) tooth in the middle. Then, these teeth are prepared for the crowns. I take an impression of the 3 spaces and send it to a lab to be fabricated & then cemented in place. The important factor with a bridge is that the abutments/anchors need to be suitable, have strong roots and no periodontal disease, to ensure the stability of the teeth. Additionally, to be a candidate for a bridge there must be teeth on either side of the space. If your missing tooth is the last one, a bridge is not an option. So, you have a lot to consider when replacing a missing tooth: cost, time to complete, bone density, adjacent teeth and aesthetics. Also, access to the area for cleaning and hygiene and other GHQWDO LVVXHV FDQ DOO LQÀXHQFH \RXU GHFLVLRQ (YHU\ FDVH LV GLIIHUHQW VR PXOWLSOH LWHPV PXVW EH HYDOXDWHG WR VHH ZKDW is the best option for you. OUR TOWNE WELCOMES HECTOR PT Hector PT is different from other Physical Therapy providers in that they provide therapy at the Greenbush YMCA, right here in Our Towne. Wanting to own his own business, Hector Jasen established Hector PT in 2000 so that he could provide innovative, high quality care in locations where you normally wouldn’t find Physical Therapy. He started out in Retirement Communities and in 2006 forged a partnership with the Capital District YMCA. Being in a location where there is a need, like at the YMCA or a retirement community, allows him to interact with patients in an environment that is convenient and supports the rehabilitation goals.

As an independently owned and operated Physical Therapy provider, Advanced Medical Technology they can work one to one with patients without the time constraints that are strict in large PT groups. They provide comprehensive Pool Therapy ~ Manual Therapy assessment and individualized hands-on care. On the cutting edge Open Monday-Friday 7am-7pm & Saturday 8-noon of technology, they can work with you to develop short & long term goals. The partnership with the YMCA has been successful, as both of their goals revolve around the premise of maintaining a healthy & active life. Because they are in the Greenbush (and Southern Saratoga) branches, they can utilize the pool and all of the YMCA equipment as part of the rehabilitation plan. Essentially, they have the biggest physical therapy facility in the region, based on use of those buildings. You don’t have to be a member of the YMCA to work with Hector PT. If you aren’t a YMCA member and want to work with Hector PT, you do receive a complimentary 30 day membership to the YMCA for free. The YMCA members do benefit, as they can check in with Hector or his staff when they are exercising, even after being discharged as a patient. He develops relationships with the members, and if they encounter a problem, he and his staff are available for free consultation at any time. They often provide advice to prevent future injury and want to help the community maintain wellness & good health. Did you know that you can see a Physical Therapist in New York State without a referral? Sometimes physical therapy is not the answer, and they will direct you towards a particular exercise after assessing you. Most insurance is accepted.

The goal of Hector PT is to assist individuals with rehabilitation and also help them prevent injury in the future. They would rather you be proactive vs. reactive. Much of living a healthy life is knowing how to prevent injury. Working in the YMCA also allows Hector PT patients the option to utilize the child care within the facility. “It is great when a mother or father can pursue their physical therapy in the same building where they can access free child care. Often times, parents with young children don’t pursue physical therapy because they don’t have a baby sitter. Providing PT in the YMCA eliminates that issue for our patients. You can find out more about HECTOR PT at www.hectorpt.com. Call 371-5554 today to set up your complimentary assessment.

Avoid These Seller Mistakes By Cathy Graziano
You want to get the best price for your home, in addition to selling it in the least amount of time. Therefore, it is important to make the right moves at the very beginning of your homeselling process to remain competitive. Here are some common obstacles and how to avoid them. 1. Over-pricing — It is easy to think your home is worth more than the current market may support, particularly after the long run-up in home prices. Since home prices have cooled, home sellers should be prepared to negotiate on price & terms, and stay flexible to other stipulations benefiting the buyer. Sellers must also keep their emotions in check during the process. After all, your home is special to you and your family, and you are proud of the improvements you have made over the years. But, how does your home really stand up to the others? Are those improvements important to a potential buyer? To determine a reasonable listing price, consult with a real estate professional and get sales statistics on homes in the neighborhood including listing prices and actual sales prices, how long it took for the homes to sell, and value comparisons. They can help you determine true market value based on a comparable market analysis. Visit homes for sale in your area and compare what you see in terms of price & sales appeal vs. your home. 2. Negligent Housekeeping — Buyers need to be able to envision themselves living in the home. Take a good, objective look at the condition of your home. Clean, well-kept homes with an updated appearance always stand out, and a little decorating appeal can go a long way. You don't have to buy new furniture to create charm, but you can put toys and clutter away, freshen up paint and carpet, make the most of window coverings, and add a few key accessories. 3. Failing to Fix-It — Buyers, unless they are looking for a fixer-upper, would prefer to move into a home that is in perfect or near-perfect condition. If they have to fix the roof, a broken tile floor, the garage door, worn carpet or just about anything, this may give them pause about buying. At the very least, it may lower the value of the home in the prospective buyer's mind. 4. Not Identifying Exclusions — This can be a cause of contention just at a critical point in the sale. Be sure to specify any special sales considerations or exclusions from the fixtures and furnishings list. Generally, anything permanently fixed to the house is an asset that stays with the home after the sale. So if you intend to take the antique chandelier that is hanging in the dining room, clearly specify that the chandelier is not included in the sale price. 5. Not Understanding the Agent Agreement — Your sales endeavor will go smoothest when all parties have a clear understanding of what is expected. Understand the types of agency agreements when you sign with a real estate professional or company. Be sure to check on fees, commission percentages, marketing plans and timeframes. Most importantly, get copies and put everything in writing Cathy is a resident of East Greenbush and an associate broker with RE/MAX Park Place. This year marks 25 years of experience in the real estate business for Cathy. She is also a member of NYSAR Professional Standards and Education Management Committees. The Bell Park Committee is continuing efforts to fund the installation of the historic Meneely Bell from the former Brainard United Methodist Church as they complete their plans for the surrounding Bell Park. A slab has been laid to host the bell and original steeple; however funds for doing so are greatly needed. Therefore a Go Fund Me campaign is underway and any one can donate to this effort via the website http://www.gofundme.com/ n7bs34. entitled Build Bell Park.
All donations will be used toward the completion of this Park, allowing those who travel Route 20 through the Town of Nassau to have a place for a quiet rest and reflection on the history of the area. The Brainard Rural Cemetery, almost directly across the road, has been upgraded under the care of the Town of Nassau and is an additional source of that history. You may visit the Village of East Nassau NY website for more information on the Park.

By Nassau Veterinary Clinic, PLLC WHEN TOUGH DECISIONS CALL FOR SECOND OPINIONS
Little Buddy, a year-old puppy, was playing in his yard under his owners’ watchful eye. Buddy was enjoying one of our first sunny, snow-free days. The happy-go-lucky puppy was running around when suddenly, without warning, he darted into the street. A passing driver saw him, but couldn’t stop in time. In a split second, Buddy went from happily running in his yard to lying on the asphalt with bloody, mangled legs. His owners didn’t waste a second, swaddling him in a towel and rushing him to a veterinarian’s office. But the diagnosis was grim. The bone and tissue loss was too great, the owners were told; one of his legs could not be saved. Amputation is a serious recommendation, and it can be frightening for pet owners. The thought of their beloved pet losing limbs is not something anyone takes lightly. Difficult medical decisions can only be made after discussing options and risks with the veterinarian, and sometimes, taking another step and getting a second opinion. A second opinion is not a vote of confidence (or lack of). Most veterinarians welcome another opinion. It’s another set of eyes, experiences and education looking at the situation, and it may offer more treatment options or even a different diagnosis. Recently, we saw an elderly dog with a tumor on its leg. The tumor, about the size of a lemon, had not changed much in several years. However, lately it had started growing and the attending veterinarian recommended amputating the dog’s leg. The owner brought the dog to see one of our veterinarians for a second opinion. We opted for surgery to remove and biopsy the growth, which was sent to a laboratory for analysis. The results were startling: it wasn’t a tumor at all. It was a sliver from a foreign object that had embedded itself in the dog’s leg. In this case, a second opinion saved the dog from losing a limp unnecessarily. According to the Patient Advocate Foundation, 30% of patients who sought second opinions found that the first and second opinions did not agree. A second opinion may not solve the situation and it may not offer a new diagnosis, but it does provide you with more information. More information allows you to understand the choices more thoroughly. Ultimately, you want to make an informed decision based on as much knowledge as possible. As to Buddy, he came in for a second opinion the day after his accident. We brought in a specialist who felt, with the right treatment, there’s a strong chance his leg could be saved in spite of the tissue and bone loss. It’s only been a couple weeks since his reconstructive surgery. He’s not walking yet, but Buddy is on the mend. He’s a frequent clinic visitor, coming in for regular bandage changes and his long-term outlook is bright. While he’s still not out of the woods, we’re all rooting for him that one day, he’ll run again.
