The Our Towne Spotlight shines on...
N.E. Tree & Property Services
Tom Haberland, owner of N.E. Tree & Property Services, was destined to work with his hands & around big vehicles. Just from visiting his enormous shop in Nassau, near the land he grew up on, you can clearly see he is a hard working businessman with a clear goal: success. I would say that working with his hands and big machines is in his blood. Growing up surrounded by the big trucks of his grandfather’s construction company, tools and motors, he learned early on the art-and business of dismantling, building and creating for fun (and now profit). The story of Tom Haberland is much like many other small business owners in Our Towne who started out small. Why is he so successful? His strong work ethic, desire to use & expand his skills and excellent reputation for getting the job done are ingredients in his recipe for success. Tom is a very humble person who doesn't even want to brag (even when on the cover of Our Towne). His repeat customers, referrals and positive feedback from clients speaks for itself. And with his adorable 3 year old daughter, Alexis, hanging out with her Daddy in the shop, you know this is just the start! Born and raised in Nassau, Tom attended Columbia High School. Growing up in a family of hard working business owners, he started landscaping at sixteen. After six years he started tree work when the economy changed and customers were spending less on optional landscaping projects. It was then that he needed to develop a skill that was in demand and could pay the bills. He didn’t have much experience, but that didn’t stop him. A trait that many successful business owners have is the ability to reinvent themselves and make money doing something that is in demand. So, Tom started climbing trees, one at a time. Now, thirteen years late, Tom has a hugely successful business that includes a fleet of eleven trucks. This includes cranes, bucket trucks, and dump trucks, as well as a staff of five workers, including his brother Corey and father Tom Senior. If you need tree services such as trimming, removal, stump grinding, crane removal, or land clearing; N.E. Tree & Property Service is the company to call. They also offer excavation services such as digging water & sewer lines, underground utilities, grading, foundations and sells seasoned firewood all year. Tom built a Kiln, where he can dry wood at 180 degrees, killing bugs and speeding up the process for seasoning firewood. He sells green and seasoned firewood all year long. Tom Haberland, the owner and founder, guarantees a timely response, an extensive cleanup, and a focus on the safety for you and your property. “My goal is to have it look like we were never there. Taking down trees is a very messy process. We cut the branches, gently lower them to the ground using our crane and cut and chip them before we leave the property. My crew has mastered the art of clean-up. You will not find saw dust or debris all over your street and yard.” N.E. Tree & Property Service is an environmentally friendly, green company. The wood that is hauled away is re-purposed and used as firewood, mulch and lumber. He has now expanded his services to include selling custom kiln dried wood for use as specialty decorative pieces such as mantels, bar tops, for Adirondack style furniture. In addition, Tom and his team are very conscious of wildlife and not displacing animals and birds from their homes. N.E. Tree & Property Service is different from other tree service companies because they embrace high risk and difficult projects. Tom says that “no matter the situation, we will figure out a way to get it done with the least amount of damage to your property.” They specialize in low impact, which means not dropping large pieces of branches that would damage your lawn. They provide a timely response, and promise to have your property cleaned up perfectly. From taking down small branches to full tree and stump removal, you can bet that they will be safe and careful. Tom Haberland runs the entire company, on top of providing unbelievable work. He does it all, from estimates to working on every job; and all with 100% customer satisfaction. Their prices are competitive and Tom is happy to work with your insurance company, in the incidents of property damage due to storms. One of their happy customers recently posted a You Tube video of his tree work: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4xO2NKDtdKY Tree removals are done when old or dying trees have become hazardous to the environment or land owner. Tree removal is the second most dangerous job, and you must be an expert to perform the task. N.E. Tree & Property Service has 13 years of experience, and the best equipment. They are trained to work safely and efficiently in all situations, and provide a thorough removal process. This family owned and operated business out of Nassau is the one to do your tree work and guarantees a safe removal & perfect clean-up at a reasonable price. Give Tom a call today at 518-858-8606 to schedule your free estimate.

DE Landscaping can help you clean up and beautify your yard!
DE Landscape Design Expands & Opens New Materials Yard DE Landscape Design is owned & operated by Don Earing, a native of East Greenbush who graduated from Columbia High School. Don has worked in and around Our Towne improving homes for 30 years as a paver, landscaper and excavator. He currently creates beautiful and functional outdoor spaces, and has now opened a bulk landscape material yard where you can save big on items to beautify your outdoor space. After owning and managing his own successful paving company for many years (DE Paving & Seal Coating), it was time for a change. Wanting to spend more time with his family, he created DE Landscape Design where he could continue to beautify homes in the capital district, and have a more regular schedule. Don is the perfect example of the little boy who had the dream" to grow up and work with his hands and use big trucks." Just like the boy who plays with the Tonka trucks in the dirt and sand box, Don loves to create beautiful landscapes. He loves to get his hands dirty & move the earth around to make creations for his customers. Creating outdoor living spaces that are beautiful functional are what DE Landscape Design is all about.

THE BEST CHICKEN MARSALA & ASPARAGUS EVER Ingredients: 1/2 cup all-purpose flour 1 tablespoon Essence (recipe below) 2 (6 to 8-ounce) boneless, skinless chicken breasts, cut in halves and pounded thin 1 tablespoon olive oil 4 tablespoons butter 3 cups sliced mushrooms ( cremini, oyster, shiitake) 3/4 cup Marsala 1 cup chicken stock Salt and freshly ground black pepper Chopped chives, optional Essence Recipe- 2 1/2 tablespoons paprika, 2 tablespoons salt, 2 tablespoons garlic powder, 1 tablespoon black pepper, 1 tablespoon onion powder, 1 tablespoon cayenne pepper, 1 tablespoon dried leaf oregano, 1 tablespoon dried thyme Directions: In a shallow bowl or plate combine the flour and Essence and stir to combine thoroughly. Quickly dredge the chicken breast halves in the seasoned flour mixture, shaking to remove any excess flour. Heat oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat until very hot but not smoking. Add 1 tablespoon of the butter and cook the chicken breasts until golden brown on both sides, about 3 minutes per side. Transfer to a plate and set aside. Add 1 tablespoon of the remaining butter to the pan and add the mushrooms. Cook, stirring frequently, until mushrooms are golden brown around the edges and have given off their liquid. Add the Marsala wine and bring to a boil, scraping to remove any browned bits from the bottom of the pan. When the wine has reduced by half, add the chicken stock and cook for 3 minutes, or until the sauce has thickened slightly. Lower the heat to medium and return the chicken breasts to the pan and continue to cook until they are cooked through and the sauce has thickened, about 5 to 6 minutes. Swirl in the remaining 2 tablespoons of butter, add salt and pepper, to taste. Garnish with chopped chives (optional), serve immediately. Asparagus- Grab a bundle or two of asparagus. Peel stem of asparagus. With 2 cups of water, 1 tbsp of olive oil, add asparagus and gently cook for 10 minutes. Season with salt & pepper to taste. ENJOY!

5 Wrong Turns to Avoid When Selling Your Home By Cathy Graziano
Sometimes, it’s helpful to learn from your mistakes. Usually, it’s much better to learn from someone else’s, especially when it comes to something as important as selling your home. Here are some common mistakes you really don’t want to make:
Feature Home oF tHe montH
63 Chadwycke CT, Schodack for $349,900
1. Trying to sell your home yourself In this DIY era, the urge to try to sell your home yourself to save money can beckon like the smell of oven-fresh cookies at an open house. Resist. Working with a licensed agent helps ensure you’re not leaving money on the table as a result of an off-target listing price or a mistake in the many steps that lead to a final sale. Sell your sofa yourself online. List your home with a professional. 2. Picking the wrong Realtor Not all agents are equal. Just because your college buddy dabbles in the industry doesn’t mean he’s the best guy to sell your home. You want experience. You want to work with an agent who has a depth of knowledge. Invite your buddy to the housewarming party. Find an agent who you feel comfortable with, who will put your best interests first and can truly guide you. 3. Pricing your home too high Sometimes it’s good to aim high. But when you’re setting a price for your home, it’s better to be smart than overly eager. Listing your home at a price beyond the true market value and then letting it drop several times can lead to a lower sale price than you’re hoping for. A savvy agent can help you set the best, most competitive price for your home based on other recent sales and local market trends. Don’t be afraid to ask several agents for their price opinions but don’t choose the agent just because they gave you the highest value. 4. Sweating the small stuff Keep things in perspective. You’re in the process of one of the largest business transactions you’ll ever make. It’s easy to get distracted by dollars adding up from pre-sale repairs or post-inspection demands, but don’t let the cost of replacing a closet door, servicing the furnace or fixing a stairway banister derail you. After you reach the finish line on your home sale, you’ll focus more on the rewarding outcome and quickly forget about the smaller frustrations. 5. Getting emotional Yes, your children may have learned to walk on that carpet, but a heartfelt story isn’t going to win the hearts of buyers. With so much personal history tied to your home, emotions can cloud judgment. An agent can help you make smart, strategic decisions. When you’re ready to sell your home the right way, find a local RE/MAX agent to guide you. Call RE/MAX Platinum at 720-3400.

Ask the Audiologist By Madison Hearing Center
Question:
Prom Appointments Still Available!
What should you do if you have a sudden hearing loss? A friend of mine woke up one morning and couldn’t hear out of one of her ears.
Answer:
Dr.Megan McGuire A sudden hearing loss should be treated as an emergency. If you wake up in the morning and cannot hear (and you went to bed hearing well), you should immediately contact your primary physician. Certainly if you woke up blind in one eye, you wouldn’t ignore it! Your physician will rule out ear wax, allergies, fluid, etc. and once those are ruled out should refer you on for a visit with an ENT (Ear, Nose and Throat physician) for treatment. Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss (SSNHL) occurs rapidly, typically over several hours (even overnight) or a few days. Most often, the cause of SSNHL is a viral infection. The most common treatment for SSHL, especially if the cause is not known, is corticosteroids. Steroids help to reduce inflammation and decrease any swelling that could be causing the hearing loss. Your doctor may prescribe oral steroids or steroids can be delivered via injection through the ear drum. Ultimately, approximately two-thirds of patients with SSHL are expected to recover some or all of the hearing that they initially lost. Approximately 4,000 people are afflicted with SSNHL annually in the United States. Most of the time, a sudden hearing loss affects only one ear. Quite often the hearing loss is accompanied by tinnitus (ringing in the ear) and sometimes dizziness. Some people report a small amount of hearing loss while others report losing all of their hearing in that ear. In summary, if you have a sudden change in your hearing, please contact your doctor immediately. The sooner you have the loss investigated, the sooner you are treated and the greater the likelihood that your hearing will recover to some degree.

This issue has many pages dedicated to summer activities and camps for kids. Camp offers kids many benefits; a chance to develop independence from family and current peer groups, gain new skills, discover new passions, make new friends and develop character. Camp gives kids the chance to take risks and challenge who they are, and what they are good at. Of course, having FUN should be the top priority!

This year I am a little sad to think that my oldest daughter will be gone for a month; as she returns to her most favorite place on earth, YMCA Camp Chingachgook on Lake George. She is so excited to be a “Counselor in Training.” We will certainly miss her, but figure it will be good practice for us since she will be off to college next year. UGH. (Deep sigh). The opportunity to challenge herself as a leader, teacher, role model and develop life and work skills is important for any 17 year old. Her spirit soars at Camp Chingachgook; so we will pack her up and hopefully negotiate a visit now and then. At least our younger daughter will be around to keep us from feeling too relaxed, as her summer camps are around Our Towne!
To connect local businesses and organizations to the consumers that live in their communities. We highlight what Southern Rensselaer & Northern Columbia Counties have to offer. Our Towne Magazine content can be read in print, online & via Facebook. 20% of the magazine is donated to the communities served for promotion of events. Our goal is to “Connect the Community” and support small businesses.
Much of this issue is also focused on outdoor home improvement and Easter. As always, our local businesses can’t survive without your support. They appreciate your support. I wish you all a Happy Easter or Happy Passover; whatever it is you celebrate I hope it is peaceful & positive. May you find joy in the green grass, buds on the trees and flowers making their 2017 debut.

HAPPY ANNIVERSARY LAPINSKI DENTAL! I want take this opportunity to say THANK YOU.
Our very first day of business here in East Greenbush was April 1, 1997. We had spent the previous 2 weeks furiously painting the walls and installing our new sign. To say I was nervous is an understatement. I had imagined this day for years and was finally happening. April surprised us, as it so often can in the northeast. We arrived that morning, to greet our new patients, to 1 foot of new snow. Daryl was working downtown at the time, and came over in a suit and heels with several shovels and we did what we had to do, clearing the way for our business to start. I can honestly say that from the moment that first flake fell, until today, it’s been my mission to serve our patients with the best solutions to their problems. I love what I do, and I believe it shows. We have staff of professionals that feel the same way. Lapinski Dental did not get here without the love and support of our family, friends, amazing staff, fantastic patients, talented specialists and kind referral sources. Our continued success is because of you. A personal thanks to Daryl, Cindy, Karen, Paula, Lisa, Chris, Kayla & Joyce for their daily support. We have had an incredible 20 years here at Lapinski Dental, and look forward to the future, and what that holds for our practice. Please join us to celebrate this milestone and toast to our future!

SPIRITS ARE SOARING AT CK DANCE COMPANY CK Dance Company is owned and operated by Radio City Rockette, Chrystie Greco, who also holds a BFA in Dance. With its location on Columbia Turnpike, in East Greenbush, they offer a full curriculum of dance techniques to all ages. Their preschool classes, geared toward ages 3-5, are a ballet/tap combo and introduce the fundamentals of dance in a fun and nurturing environment that invites their youngest dancers to foster their love for dance and begin to blossom into confident little performers. The Combo class program, ages 5-10, teaches the foundation techniques in ballet, tap, and jazz, in the traditional once-a-week dance class fashion. As dancers progress they move into longer classes of study in Ballet, Tap, Jazz, Modern/Contemporary, and even a Performance Company for those dancers who want more opportunity to perform. This company of dancers brings their talents into the community each year to local nursing homes with their holiday performances. CK Dance Company believes that everyone, children and adults, have a unique opportunity through dance to develop not only the physical benefits, but also, self-confidence, discipline, team-work, and many other skills to benefit them in their everyday lives. The faculty is made up of professional dancers, college graduates in dance, and school teachers who share a passion in bringing dance to each individual in a way that fosters the love of dance and the enjoyment of exploring self-expression. In addition to the school-year curriculum, CK Dance Company offers dance and fitness classes to adults as well as a full summer program including fun-filled themed summer camps. This year they offer a 6 week Summer Dance Series, as a "sampler" of their year round weekly dance and fitness classes. The Dance Camps invite young children to explore and experience some of their favorite movies and characters from the past year: “Royal Princess Camp”, “Moana Camp”, “Trolls Camp” and “SING Musical Theatre Camp”. For more information on any of these programs and to register online, please visit ckdancecompany.com..... And Let Your Spirit Soar!

KIDS PLANNING GUIDE B usy K ids = H appy K ids GREENBUSH CHILD CARING COULD SERVE MORE FAMILIES WITH ADDED STAFF Greenbush Child Caring, Inc. (GCC) has been in existence for thirty-four years. In 1983 GCC opened an after-school program at one location, twenty-two children were enrolled. In 2016 GCC served nearly seven-hundred families in before-school, after-school, full-day and summer camp programs operating from ten locations. With demand for their services increasing they are in immediate need of staff members that will allow for additional children and families to be served on a daily basis. Many families have been on a waitlist for the current school year due to a lack of employees. GCC actively seeks employees through advertisement, job fairs, guidance counselors, college career centers & social media however, the number of required part-time workforce has not kept up with demand. GCC offers competitive pay, sick time and some paid holidays to part-time staff. Training is an integral part of employment, including CPR, First-Aid, and quality program standards. Employees also have the opportunity to enroll in the SchoolAge Care Credential program. A credential certificate is the equivalent of an AAS degree and would qualify an individual to be a full-time site director with the proper amount of experience. GCC takes great pride in their accredited programs and needs qualified employees to fulfill their mission. For continued growth and service to the community GCC needs interested, qualified and dedicated people over the age of 18 to apply, immediate rewarding openings are available. Saturday, May 20,2017 at 9:00AM. 80 Scott Avenue Castleton, NY (Castleton Elementary School). This year the run will be in honor of Emily Segarra. She is a courageous little girl who was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia, known as ALL in November 2015. Her last chemo will be January 20, 2018. and we want to show her support and let her know that her strength inspires us during her ongoing battle. Mine!
“Alfie,” the family dog, was always a happy, goofy boy. But one day during lunch, one of the kids dropped a hotdog on the floor. As Dad reached down to scoop it up, Alfie grabbed it first. Dad tried to take the hotdog from Alfie, but was shocked when the dog curled his lips and gave a low, menacing growl. The family couldn’t believe their beloved Alfie had turned aggressive without any warning or reason. What if it was one of the children? Would Alfie growl or, worse, bite them? Alfie was resource guarding. It’s a common and natural behavior in which a dog protects something he values. Digging a little deeper into the dog’s upbringing, I learned that since Alfie was a puppy, the family regularly took his food or toys away as a lesson. The theory was that Alfie would learn to accept someone taking things away. This training idea is sadly off mark. In almost all of the resource guarding cases I have consulted on, clients have actually inadvertently made the dog WORSE by arbitrarily taking things away from the dog! While the intent may be that the dog learns to accept people taking his food, in reality he’s learning that people can't be trusted, and he must protect anything he values. It’s easy to see how it happens. Imagine going to a restaurant. While you’re enjoying the appetizers, the waiter whisks by and grabs your plate. You’re not finished eating, but the waiter doesn’t care. Later as you're eating a steak, the waiter comes by and takes your meal away again. During dessert, you see the waiter coming toward you. You hover over your plate and keep your eye on the waiter. There’s no way he’s getting your dessert, too! You are resource guarding. But what if during appetizers, the waiter drops by with a complimentary basket of buttery garlic bread. Then during your meal, he brings a free bottle of wine, uncorked and ready to serve. Later he drops by with chocolate cake, all on the house. Soon you're not only happy to see the waiter, you’re looking forward to his visits. The experience is similar with dogs. If you establish that you will steal food or toys--even if you give them back--your dog will be suspicious and guard his treasures. However, if every time you approach him while he's eating, you give him a bonus treat, he’ll look forward to your visits as a welcome pleasure. Resource guarding is a VERY serious behavior problem, but one that is, in most cases, treatable. By understanding the root of this behavior, and with ongoing training management, Alfie no longer shows this aggression. The family is happy to once again enjoy the sweet, loveable dog he was as a puppy. — Dr. Carolyn Sanford

Believe what you read By Daryl Bart | www.DarylBart.com
Why is it, that for so many, one of the hardest things to hear and accept, a compliment? I can think back over a lifetime of moments where I recall saying “It was nothing” or “I look fat” or “I hate my …” It makes me sad to even think about this. If the same words came out of my own daughters mouth, I would quickly try to stop the flow of words, help her learn to flip that mindset. Recently, I attended an awards ceremony. In a proud parent moment, my son was the recipient of a recognition award, along with about 30 other students from area high schools. One by one, the students were called up, their credentials reviewed. Several times Nate leaned over and whispered, “she looks so sad” and “why isn't she smiling”?
Let me also say on the other side that these women (and young teens) with bad habits are not wallflowers. There is a whole lot of GIRL POWER happening. The women are BAD-A with a capital B. They are running businesses, running households, running fundraisers and running marathons. They are balancing the hectic lifestyles we have learned to hide within. Yet waiting, waiting, waiting for a break to finally do more “self care”, putting themselves on the back burner for too long and have started to believe their own excuses. Part of what we work on is stripping away the excuses that get in the way of feeling confident, fearless, awesome all the time, or at least, facing down the chaos with a smile and sometimes a glass of wine, a book, a run or a Netflix binge. Let’s not perpetuate this any longer, at any age and get to work changing this habit together. , In honor of my birthday month (YES, I’ve declared April as mine but I’m willing to share) and enter what will be my 50th year (not the last time this fact will come up in the next 13 months) I’m starting with a gift to myself to address the longstanding and still lingering self doubt and confidence issues that I, too, struggle with. I’m going to give MYSELF a list of compliments.
It was a SHE thing. They were young women, being recognized for being incredible, being community volunteers, strong students, impressive role models. Yet, while they did so much for others, accomplished so much BUT this is a TEST that I expect YOU to take, too. After you read my and stood for so much, they were visibly uncomfortable with the accolades. “partial” list, go make your own list. We can all use a reminder what we love about ourselves and I really believe that once we embrace that, we Here’s the thing. They were taught this. I know being quiet or modest can project it to the world. Here goes (in no specific order)….. can be a part of a kid finding their place. But, instead of proudly saying, if only with their posture and facial expressions “Thank you for noticing” it I have great hair was upsetting and unsettling to watch. And more than one young woman I remember the little details actively attempted to dull down their uniqueness and special sparks, all for I make a delicious soup the sake of not shining too brightly. I’m a good friend I’m a hugger I love getting compliments but it wasn't always the case. It’s has taken me I’m lucky way into my 40’s to recognize this behavior, to actively work at changing I’m a volunteer it (it's a habit) and now it’s a goal to try and help others alter their own I look at the bright side self-perception. I’m not always on time, but I get it done! (as I send this to Our Towne past deadline!) In my wellness groups, one of the biggest obstacles many women face, OK - YOUR TURN! I want you to know how awesome you are! Make your is this self-deprecating and self-loathing mindset. We are worth it. The list, and put is somewhere you can see it. And who knows, you might compliments are real. atually believe it!

All About Eyes -Ask an Ophthalmologist By Rafael Medina, M.D.,
Board-Certified Ophthalmologist at Ophthalmic Consultants of the Capital Region
Q. What should I do about my burning, itchy dry eyes? A. Dry eyes can have many underlying causes from medical to environmental conditions. Many patients find relief by using artificial tears on a regular basis. For patients who suffer from dry eye due to Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD), also known as evaporative dry eye or lipid deficient dry eye, I use LipiFlow® to help unblock the meibomian glands. Other ways to help alleviate dry eyes include: •Take Dry Eye Vitamins. Dry eye vitamins with Omega-3s help support proper tear function. •Use a Humidifier. A humidifier can help moisturize the air inside your home and bring relief to your dry eyes. •Protect Your Eyes Outside. Cold, dry air outside can bother your eyes. You can help protect them by wearing sunglasses. •Give Your Eyes a Break. Dry eyes can result from staring at a computer screen or phone for too long. Help your eyes stay moist by giving them scheduled breaks from staring at screens. If you have dry eye or think you may have dry eye, it’s important to schedule an appointment with your eye doctor for a comprehensive eye exam. There could be an underlying medical condition that could be contributing to your dry eyes. Ophthalmic Consultants of the Capital Region offers a comprehensive model of eye care with experienced specialists, ophthalmologists & optometrists. Locations in Albany, Clifton Park, Schenectady, Schodack, and Troy. Ophthalmic Consultants of the Capital Region is a TearLab® Accredited Dry Eye Center.
