The Our Towne Spotlight shines on... Becker’s Farm located in East Greenbush is a fifth generation family owned and operated business. In 1870, Reinhardt Becker purchased his first 5 acres. Little did he know that his business venture and love for farming would continue for over 140 years! He began a small fruit and vegetable business selling his produce at the wholesale farmers market in Albany, Troy and Menands. As the demand for fresh produce started to grow, Reinhardt realized he could not produce enough with the land he had, so he purchased adjoining properties in 1894. In 1931, when the founding father of Becker’s Farm passed away, his son Frank Becker continued to grow fresh fruits and vegetables. By 1963 when his son took over the farm, expanded even more. Most of all of the produce was sold locally along routes 9 & 20. By the late 1970’s, retail grocery chains were providing large amounts of lower cost produce to the consumer. Frank Jr. recognized the farm needed to change its focus and built a small greenhouse in 1980 to grow bedding plants. With its immediate success, he quickly built two more greenhouses and began to concentrate efforts on plants. In 1989 Frank’s son David returned to the farm and expanded the greenhouses and nursery. With David’s son Mark now involved, David can concentrate on production while Mark oversees Retail Sales and Management. Becker’s Farm currently operates 11 greenhouses that total over 75,000 sq. ft. of growing area. David notes “It is an exciting time of year around the farm and we are eager to greet our loyal and new customers next month when we open for our 144th year!” They are devoted to growing the highest quality plants and with their experience and knowledge, can direct you to the plants that suit your needs and taste! By growing their own plants, they can ensure quality products and maintain quality control.

To complete your landscaping needs, Becker’s Farm also sells bulk lawn and garden products such as various colors of mulch (see Pre-Season Sale Ad on page 5), topsoil, garden compost and sand for pick up or delivery. Mulch not only improves the look of landscape, but adds length to the life of your plants. The staff at Becker’s Farm pride themselves on excellent customer service and knowledge of the plants and nursery stock. Many of the associates come from gardening and horticultural backgrounds providing customers with accurate information and insight. Bring your planters & window boxes in and they will make a custom piece for you. Ready in a few short days the staff at Becker’s Farm will do the physical labor and even pick plants that complement each other and your space. If you are in need of a professional to enhance or maintain your property Mark and Dave can refer trusted local colleagues. They only provide the goods to beautify your property. Mark and David Becker are proud to continue the business that has sustained climate & economic changes through the years. They want to thank the Our Towne communities for their patronage and support. Becker’s provides florist quality products with excellent customer service, and reasonable prices. Becker’s Farm is located directly across from Columbia Plaza in East Greenbush. They are open 7 days a week: Monday-Friday 8:00am-5:00pm, Saturday and Sunday from 8:00-5:00. Effective April 9th, they will extend their hours. More information can be found on their website www.beckersfarm.com and on Facebook. They can be reached at 518-477-4163. Happy spring from “Your Hometown Garden Center.”

Spring has sprung and Becker’s Farm is ready for all of your planting needs! Well known for the “largest baskets around,” they fill the greenhouses and nursery with large quantities and varieties to suite any taste. They offer plants for every part of your exterior landscape. A huge variety of robust annual flowers, herbs and vegetables are transplanted daily. By midApril, large selections of trees and shrubs will arrive and later in April they offer a huge selection of perennials. By early May, a large assortment of Star roses will find their way to Becker’s Farm. As a certified retailer of Proven Winner plants, they sell a series of plants that are specifically chosen to thrive in our region & climate. Varieties like Sutera, Calibrochoa, Osteospermum, Scaveola and Supertunia are all popular favorites among beginner and master gardeners. The Supertunia is famous for its large size and low Our Townemaintenance. Rensselaer County ~ Jennifer Felts~518-380-1279

for a Part Time Physical Therapist.

Be a person at Comprehensive Physical Therapy, not just a file Comprehensive Physical Therapy Solutions, PLLC opened in January 2013 in the office’s current location at 81 Miller Road. The office was the vision of Deborah Ciprioni, PT, a lifelong resident of East Greenbush. After 24+ years of working as a Licensed Physical Therapist she was unhappy with the direction that most PT clinics were going, treating a greater number of patients in less time. She knew that quality patient focused care could still be delivered in today’s ever-changing healthcare environment. She believes that patient education is the single most important aspect of care! When patients understand what daily activities may be increasing pain or irritating their condition they are able to make changes that improve their overall health and decrease the need for continued careresulting in happier patients! All patients receive a one-hour Initial Evaluation with Deborah that includes an examination and patient education regarding the diagnosis and treatment plan. Follow up appointments are scheduled in ½ hour increments (most clinics in NYS offer appointments in 15-20-minute intervals). The staff at Comprehensive Physical Therapy Solutions, PLLC consists of 3 professionals that include Deborah, Nancy and Susan meaning that when a patient enters the office for treatment they will NOT be seeing a variety of faces! Every treatment is monitored and adapted to meet the changing needs and response to treatment by the patient. Did you know that in New York State a patient is able to attend PT for 9 visits in a 30-day period of time without a Physicians referral or Prescription? Patients also have the right to choose where they want to attend Physical Therapy! Word of mouth from satisfied patients referring their family members and friends has been Comprehensive Physical Therapy Solutions, PLLC’s biggest referral source! Do you need Physical Therapy? With the rising cost of healthcare-higher co-pays and larger deductibles, make the smart choice and go to a Physical Therapy clinic that will address your needs and not treat you like a number! We would love to meet you and show you why we are different! We can be reached daily at 518-915-1452, on our website comprehensiveptsolutions.com or on facebook CPTSny.

Ask the Audiologist A New Beginning Consignment Shop By Madison Hearing Center

Vanden Houten Square 568 Columbia Turnpike East Greenbush, NY 12061 518-894-4681

Q

: I was just diagnosed with hearing

loss in both ears, and hearing aids were recommended. Do I really need two hearing aids?

A

: When patients are diagnosed

Dr. Kate Kawola with hearing loss in both ears, the majority of the time two hearing aids will be recommended. There are several reasons for this recommendation. Today’s hearing aid technology has advanced to the point where the hearing aids are communicating with one another. This feature allows the hearing aids to function better in noise, such as family gatherings or restaurants. Two hearing aids also allow for better localization. Localization tells the wearer which direction sounds are coming from. When we listen with two ears, a process called binaural summation occurs. This means that when we use two ears to hear and listen, we get an added boost in clarity and understanding. Binaural summation is another reason individuals with bilateral hearing loss (hearing loss in both ears) should be fit with two hearing aids. If your concerns are budget related, most audiologists would recommend that you go with two hearing aids that are lower in technology instead of one more expensive hearing aid.

Not all individuals are candidates for two hearing aids. Further testing by your audiologist should be completed to determine if two hearing aids is the most appropriate recommendation. •Diagnostic Testing •Custom Hearing Protection •Assistive Devices •7 Doctors of Audiology •Digital Technology •Insurances Accepted

Real Property Issues and Elder Law By Christian Dribush

When taking steps to protect the family home, there are important Medicaid asset preservation and tax planning considerations. While Medicaid law is complex, the basics of Medicaid transfer rules are: (1) a look back period; (2) a penalty period calculation, and (3) a penalty transfer start date. The look back period runs 5 years from the date of the Medicaid application. The penalty period calculation is the value of all partial or full transfers divided by regional cost of care which results in the number of months the Medicaid applicant is ineligible for Medicaid benefits. The penalty transfer start date begins when the Medicaid applicant is in a nursing home, is “otherwise eligible,” and an application for Medicaid has been filed.

To shield real property assets from the future cost of long term care people may consider one of the following transfers: (1) deeds with life estate retaining a limited power of appointment; and (2) irrevocable trusts. This article will address the transfer by life estate while retaining a limited power of appointment. The irrevocable Medicaid trust may be the topic of a future article.

Fast & courteous services. Competitive prices.

Other than life planning issues, the following 3 areas may be part of the process in considering a life estate transfer while retaining a limited power of appointment: (1) title; (2) tax; and (3) Medicaid.

ALYSSA YEAGER An Afternoon of folk rock

The title considerations of a life estate with a limited power of appointment include:

• When title to a deed is split between a life estate and remainder interest, the property becomes non-probate property, and will pass by operation of law. • If the real property needs to be sold or refinanced during the lifetime of the life tenant, then all owners on the deed will need to sign. • Inclusion of the limited power of appointment allows for other planning at a future time if family circumstances change. For example, if the remainder person dies first, with a limited power of appointment the life tenant may execute a new deed exercising the power of appointment in favor of another remainder person.

The tax considerations of a life estate with a limited power of appointment include:

•Life tenants retain their school tax STAR exemption, veteran exemption, and senior citizen (income contingent) exemption. •No gift tax return is necessary with a limited power of appointment because there is no completed gift of an asset. •The asset is part of the grantor estate subject to estate tax and thus will receive a step-up in cost basis upon the death of the grantor. •If there is a sale during the grantor’s lifetime, the remainder person is likely not eligible for the principal residence real estate exemption and thus may be subject to capital gains tax.

The Medicaid considerations of a life estate with power of appointment include:

• If a Medicaid application is filed within 5 years of the date of the deed, then there will be a penalty period assessed for the transfer. • If the grantor’s health declines during the 5-year look back period some options include selling the house and sharing the proceeds or the remainder person gifts back to the life tenant undoing the plan which will start the 5-year clock all over but may allow for different planning. Long range planning involving real property transfers include careful consideration of title, taxes, Medicaid, and life events. This article lists some of the considerations but there may be other factors which may sway your decision on the best approach for your needs. Have questions? Most people do, as these are complex and personal issues. Schedule an appointment with Mr. Dribush at 518-729-4331 to discuss your legal & estate needs.

April 2018

Jennifer Felts

Dear Our Towne Readers,

Owner • Publisher

Happy spring! I am hoping that by the time you read this magazine, the snow will have melted and the tulips & daffodils will be making their way through the cold soil, into the fresh air above. I have grown quite tired of my winter coat and boots. It’s time to open the windows and breath in some fresh air.

E-mail: felts66@yahoo.com Phone: 518-380-1279 Website: www.ourtownerensco.com Facebook: Our Towne Magazine Rensco

This April issue has more information about Summer Camp options in and around Our Towne. Our Towne has many choices for kids to stay busy and engaged. Many pages are filled with local choices for kids with every interest.

To connect local businesses and organizations to the consumers that live in their communities. We highlight what Southern Rensselaer & Northern Columbia Counties have to offer. Our Towne Magazine content can be read in print, online & via Facebook. 20% of the magazine is donated to the communities served for promotion of events. Our goal is to “Connect the Community” and support small businesses.

Spring is such an exciting time to make plans for the house and family. When the days get longer and the end of the school year is in sight, I get energized and want to make plans for the spring and summer. There are so many choices, and of course my priority is to support local business. We will all be spending more time outside & likely fixing up our outdoor space. I ask you to resist the urge to pick up your plants, gardening & landscaping materials at the huge corporate stores and shop locally. The cover story about Becker’s Farm is impressive for many reasons. The fact that they are now a 5th generation business that has managed to survive competition from huge corporate home stores & even grocery stores is honestly a miracle. This miracle of surviving, and growing a business, despite competition from deep discount stores could only have happened because of your support. So, on behalf of every business in this magazine, I thank you. I am sure you have heard the expression “every vote counts.” I believe that. I also believe that “every dollar counts.” It all adds up. So, please shop locally with a small, family owned and operated businesses. I wish you a very sunny & warm April. I will be celebrating my Mom on her birthday and feeling thankful I have been so blessed to have her in my life. I will also celebrate my own birthday with a very conscious plan to stay thankful for another year, and not to focus on the increase in fine lines, health issues and unwanted curves. Thank you for reading Our Towne Magazine.

Q. My sister was recently diagnosed with open-angle glaucoma. How do I know if I have glaucoma? A. Unfortunately, open-angle glaucoma can run in families and since your sister was diagnosed with open-angle glaucoma, you should make an eye appointment with an ophthalmologist for glaucoma testing. Open-angle glaucoma is the most common type of glaucoma and is often called the “silent thief of sight” because it has no symptoms until it’s in advanced stages. Unfortunately, most people don’t know they have openangle glaucoma until they’ve experienced actual vision loss. Once vision has been lost, there is no way to regain your sight. In a recent study presented at the American Glaucoma Society Conference, investigators revealed that 24 percent of nearly 1,000 patients screened had undetected glaucoma-related diagnoses. What you need to do now: Since your sister has glaucoma you’re considered at highrisk for glaucoma and should visit an ophthalmologist for glaucoma testing.

After the age of 40, you should go every year for an annual comprehensive eye exam that includes glaucoma testing. Many people think a vision exam for eyeglasses or contacts is enough to detect glaucoma. However, this is not the case. Glaucoma can only be detected through special testing. Early detection of glaucoma can help save your vision. Visiting your eye doctor for glaucoma testing is very important. If we can catch glaucoma in the early stages, with treatment, we can often preserve vision for a very long time. Ophthalmic Consultants of the Capital Region offers a comprehensive model of eye care with experienced specialists, ophthalmologists & optometrists. Locations in Albany, Clifton Park, Schenectady, Schodack, and Troy. To make an appointment call 518-777-2777.

“Gazing Up & Looking Back” By Dennis DeLisle Looking east in late April, a bright star-like object joins the full moon about an hour after sunset - - mighty Jupiter! You may have seen recent pictures from the JUNO spacecraft now orbiting this planet. We learn from www.nasa.gov that “In Greek and Roman mythology, Jupiter drew a veil of clouds around himself to hide his mischief. It was Jupiter's wife, the goddess Juno, who was able to peer through the clouds and reveal Jupiter's true nature. This spacecraft will also look beneath the clouds to see what the planet is up to, helping us to understand the planet's structure and history.” And, it’s baseball season, the sport that kept me and my friends busy spring, summer and fall. We played in an empty field on a hill now paved over by I-90. We used wooden bats kept together with black electrical tape. We shared gloves since many of us did not have one of our own. With no fences, you had to “leg-out” a home run. No parents. No umpires. Our rules, our game. And the sound and feel of a baseball hitting my glove feels just as good today as it did in 1965.

Dennis studied Astronomy, Physics, Computer Science and Mathematics at UAlbany, graduating in 1976. After 41 years in the world of Information Technology, he is now able to spend more time sharing his love of science and math with young and old alike. Cindy, the love of his life, and dd live in Castleton, where they grew up, met and married.

Summer Learning Programs Ready to Turn “Summer Brain Drain” into Gain for Capital Region Students Assemblymember Pat Fahy and Capital Region Expanded Learning Opportunities (CRELO) Network Working to Provide Summer Opportunities and Close the Academic Achievement Gap

Albany, NY – Representatives of the Capital Region Expanded Learning Opportunities (CRELO) network strategized with local public officials to maximize summer learning opportunities and close the achievement gap between low and high-income students. Research shows that most students lose two months of mathematical skills every summer, and lowincome children typically lose another two to three months in reading. “Summer learning programs are vital enrichment tools in closing the academic achievement gap between low and high-income students,” said Assemblymember Pat Fahy. “I’m proud to support the Network for Youth Success and their efforts to stop summer brain drain.” “Quality summer learning programs provide students with the support they need to learn more efficiently year-round,” said Kelly Sturgis, Executive Director of the New York State Network for Youth Success. “We are working with our elected officials to ensure that families can count on programs that will keep their children safe and learning over the summer months.” Summer programs prepare students for their return to school in the fall by offering both enrichment and academic activities that further learning, build self-confidence, and support healthy habits. These factors contribute to children’s readiness to learn, and enhance teachers’ ability to teach, helping to raise graduation rates and close the academic achievement gap. Lynn Siebert, Executive Director of Childcare and Day Camp at the Capital District YMCA, and Jimmy Bulmer, Director of Operations at the Boys and Girls Clubs of Albany, discussed local extended learning opportunities and programs that have been shown to turn “summer brain drain” into gain. Bulmer was recognized by the National Afterschool Association as one of New York’s 2018 Next Generation of Afterschool Leaders. GREENBUSH GARDEN CLUB GRANTS Greenbush Garden Club is offering grants in the amount of $250 to schools and non- profit community youth organizations that are initiating or currently maintaining a garden with the goal of developing children’s interest in horticulture, for example a vegetable, pollinator, civic beautification or memorial garden. For more information on the grants and an application, please contact greenbushgardener@gmail.com or pick up an application at the garden club meeting at the East Greenbush Community Library on April 3. Completed applications must be received by April 30. The Children’s Grant Program and Garden Therapy with the residents of Van Rensselaer Manor are funded with the proceeds of the club’s annual plant sale. The sale will take place on Saturday May 19 at the Elks Club on Columbia Turnpike in East Greenbush, so please save the date.

East Greenbush has a particularly poignant reason for this gathering. Two members of the town who grew up in it’s neighborhoods—Liza Ellen Warner and Nikki Hart—lost their lives as victims of domestic violence. Martha Lasher-Warner, Liza Ellen’s mother, notes that “Victim empowerment is a central tenant of our work.” Warner who is a member of the National Board of Trustees of Parents of Murdered Children goes on to state, “by engaging the entire community, we are able to maximize and leverage existing resources to better serve all victims of crime and provide the necessary support through their journey toward healing.”

Glendora’s Jokes & Vegetarian Club Why did they invent the upside down lighthouse? For submarines John says about himself that he grew up to be the kind of kid his mother didn’t want him to play with. Work was difficult today. The computer broke down, and I had to think. Why did the inventor cross the TV with a microwave oven? So he could watch “60 Minutes” in a quarter of an hour Peter was telling his uncle about his piano recital. “We’re going to have real people there, too, not just parents.” St. Luke’s Lutheran Church in Valatie had a free community supper every Tuesday throughout January, February and March. The March 20th meal featured vegetarian lasagne that was enjoyed by 80 people. The flavor was just as good as the meat variety. You really can’t tell our vegetarian meals from those that contain animal products. Vegetarian meals are easy to make and tasty, and the sweet animals are not agonized and killed. How to Make Senior Living a Plan, Not a Fail Safe

Pajama Every T Feel fre evening

When the subject of senior living comes up, have you ever thought “I’m too young for that,” or “I’m still too active and healthy”? The truth is, it is never too early to start planning for your retirement. Too often, seniors wait to make a plan until they experience a crisis. Maybe you have thought, “I’ll wait until I need it.” Waiting to plan your move until it is absolutely necessary usually means you have waited too long.

Learn & Every T Childre movem

Choosing Independent Living Independent Living is not a backup plan; it is a way for active and healthy older adults to enjoy a stress-free retirement with services, amenities, and a neighborhood of new friends.

Here are some top reasons seniors may choose to move to Independent Living: • Taking care of a big house has become a burden • To increase socialization and make new friends • To be able to age in place Suffering an illness or an injury is not the right reason to move to Independent Living, and by that time you may require more assistance than is offered. Choosing to move into a Senior Living Community now can help you plan for every possibility.

One Plan, One Place Although it might seem counterintuitive, moving now while you are healthy and able, can save you from having to bounce around when you are older and facing more health challenges. Senior Living Communities that have different levels of living such as Independent Living,

Enriched Housing (often referred to as Assisted Living), and Memory Care allow you to seamlessly make care transitions as you need them. You will have peace of mind knowing that no matter what, you can stay in the community you call home.

Getting on the Waitlist Another reason to start planning now is that most communities have a waitlist to become a resident. So even if you do not see yourself moving for another year or two, it is a good idea to go ahead and get your name on the list. By the time you need Independent Living, you will already be there.

Start your plan by visiting Eddy Hawthorne Ridge, a Senior Living Community in East Greenbush, NY. Our community is located on 14 beautiful acres and features stylish, single-level apartment homes. Schedule a tour today to start your senior living plan!

When a Dog Seizes It can be frightening. Your beloved dog collapses and appears to be convulsing. Its body becomes rigid, its eyes wide but unseeing, legs stiffen and paddle uncontrollably. Afterward, your dog appears disoriented and is on the verge of panic. Your dog just had a seizure. Seizures are caused by an electrical activity overload in the brain. An episode can last for seconds or several minutes; it can be an isolated event or occur days, weeks or months apart. Episodes occurring one after another are called clusters. Seizures are classified in one of several categories: • Focal is a partial seizure. In partial seizures, only one part of the body is affected. For example, the dog may suddenly start chomping as if chewing on a wad of gum. The dog may or may not lose consciousness. • Grand mal is a generalized, intense seizure affecting the entire body. The dog loses consciousness and body control. Its body becomes rigid. It may thrash stiffen legs in a paddling motion. The dog’s jaws may be clenched open or closed; it may snap in a chattering fashion. Loss of bodily functions, such as vomiting, defecating or urinating, can occur. • Psychomotor seizure is a form of a focal seizure, but the dog’s conscious awareness maybe affected. The dog may not r recognize people, including family members; it may be disoriented, aggressive or appear to be hallucinating. For example, a dog experiencing a psychomotor seizure may repeatedly snap at the air as if at imaginary flies. There is no cure for seizures and they can afflict any dog. Tumors, toxins, brain abnormalities, and metabolic issues can cause them. The dog’s age may help with a diagnosis. Diseases, like canine distemper, and parasites, such as Toxoplasma, are often the reason for seizures in puppies under six months old. If the dog is over six months but under six years, seizures may be diagnosed as idiopathic epilepsy. This diagnosis is determined when the dog first seizes within this age range, no other cause can be attributed to the seizures, and the dog does not have any neurologic symptoms between seizures.

If your dog seizes, there are several things you can do. Safety is first. During the seizure, do not put your hands or any part of your body near your dog’s mouth. A seizing dog may bite down on anything near its mouth. If your dog is in an open area, like a living room floor, and is not in danger of hurting itself, do not touch your dog. However, if the dog is in a location where it might injure itself (such as under a table or on a concrete floor), grasp a hind leg and gently move it to a safe location. Any dog having a seizure should be examined by a veterinarian as soon as possible, however, if your dog experiences cluster seizures or has one lasting two minutes or longer, it is a medical emergency. Immediately take your dog to a veterinarian. The body’s activity during a seizure will raise the dog’s body temperature, and it can quickly overheat. Without immediate medical attention, the dog may die or suffer permanent brain damage. If possible, record the seizure, and once the seizure is over, make note of as much information as possible, such as the time of day, seizure duration, activities before the seizure, etc. Detailed information and a video may help the veterinarian with the diagnosis. While a seizure can be frightening, with your veterinarian, you may be able to manage it and help your dog live a full life.

By Lapinski Dental

A patient recently asked me if I was from around here and where I went to school. Well, yes I am and no I’m not. I was born and raised in Brooklyn & Queens, NY. (my favorite things are black & white cookies and ½ sour pickles) I went to The University at Albany for my undergraduate degree in biology, and then on to the University of Maryland for my dental degree. I found myself back here to complete a 2 year residency at St. Clare’s in Schenectady before joining their staff, and prior to opening my practice here in East Greenbush on April 1, 1997. (the day it snowed 12 inches - April Fools!). Dr. Barile on the other hand was from the general area, graduating from Guilderland. She attended University at Binghamton receiving a degree in biology and then went on to attend the University of Pennsylvania Dental School. Her residency was in NYC. Dr. Barile practiced in the Hudson Valley for 7 years, before (coming home) to the Capital Region. Note: All dentists must do a residency program. So, it would be amazing if there was a dental school here, but students want to follow that path, they will need to travel - to Buffalo, Long Island, New York City, Boston and beyond. The Capital Region does have an incredible dental resource: the Dental Hygiene program at Hudson Valley Community College. It’s a 3 year degree program generating about 50 hygienists per year. Almost all of the hygienists I’ve personally worked with over the years are graduates of this program. There’s a modern clinic on site at the HVCC campus. allowing hygienists in training, in a real world setting, plus provide care at a reasonable cost, under supervision. HVCC also has a Dental Assistant Certification course for people looking to be in dentistry but from another angle. All dentists need dental assistants. When I first moved to my East Greenbush practice, I worked as an instructor at the Dental Hygiene Department. getting to know many of the instructors and students at the time. One of the highlights of being here for this amount of time, is that I’ve watched handfuls of my own patients choose both careers in dentistry and the program at HVCC. April is our anniversary month and I love to reflect on the area and all the gifts we have. It’s hard to believe Lapinski Dental has been here for 21 years but I can honestly say I have the best patients, staff and couldn’t be more proud of my adopted area - so yes I am from here!. As always, ask your questions and communicate with your dental team. We want your smile to last a lifetime! www.LapinskiDental.com | DrJoe@LapinskiDental.com

“Parenting

ain’t easy” Daryl Bart DCBART1@gmail.com

“Parenting ain’t easy” I told my daughter with full disclosure the other day “And, nothing about raising your brother, prepared me for parenting YOU”. I think as I reflect on this statement, that it is a complement to her individuality and strength of will. Other times I am quite sure there is a curse on me, and somewhere there is a voodoo doll in my likeness, with pins in the head, targeting the brain and pure exasperation. There is never a dull moment, nor is there a predictable roadmap. I know, the more experienced moms and dads are giggling thinking “girl….you have no idea” (sip martini here). Anyway, after I made that comment at the table, in the way that only a 15 going on 30 teenager can do, first smirked, then eyebrow raised, then eye rolled and finally, she clammed up with silence. She’s nothing if not intuitive so I knew that any conversation starting out that way at the dinner table, could not be comfortable. Or at least she knew for sure that she wished she could be anywhere but here and preferably upstairs, in her room, behind closed doors, assuming the usual position. It caught her off guard and what followed was an impromptu, complex parenting conversation, where we simply seized the opportunity of a rare night when Nate was at work and it was the 3 of us, to discuss some of our views and expectations on the topics of the day. I’m sometimes shocked that my life as a parent is so cliche. I swore I’d do this differently, beat the odds of stereotypes, if I just paid attention. Talked it out. Some days my strategy is all “do as I say” other times I try to be like minded, filtering in my own recollection of what it was like back then.

YIKES, I can’t remember that far back. Isn’t the ultimate reward of not being a teenager that you get have a little optional amnesia to not recall of how awful those days were. I know some folks loved their teenage years. Me...not so much. I was EXACTLY like my daughter. So my gut reaction is to figure out a way to help her avoid the many issues I had that were born in those days and lingered around for decades. Ahem...P.S....I think I’m mostly cured of teenage angst, only to now have my own teens to manage. The irony. “Let them be them”, say some folks. “They will grow out of it”, say other folks. “She’s a great kid”, from a teacher. Still, it can’t hurt to help the odds with some real talk, some full disclosure (ok, partial disclosure) during dinner table chats. So while we’re almost ready to see one kid transition to the next stage of life with college and beyond, we’re realizing that our new normal, our only-child home is looming and the ground rules are changing. We will grasp any opportunities to connect and grow together. Allie turns 15 this month and so with that I’ll use this forum to wish her a happy, happy, happy birthday of amazings. Keep that spirit, creativity and process oriented mind. You got the best parts of both of us (and of few of the not so best parts, too). Keep leading from the front and know we have your back. Recently, Allie was home sick and I happened to be home with her, which is a rare thing for both of us these days in our busy and often divergent days. While doing some work at the kitchen counter, she came over to me and hugged me, and said…”you're a great mom”. I know for certain I wasn't prepared for that. Especially a statement that wasn't followed up with “oh and can I get a phone upgrade?” She gave me a surprise parenting gift, letting me know that no matter how hard the conversation, how complicated the issues, how much the teenager 2.0 is a little harder than the first version, and how different she might be from her brother, she is my favorite daughter and we will make it thru, together.

Day of Doggie Daycare EXP 4/30/18

The Pet Stop Moves to Peter Harris Plaza to Accommodate Growth & Demand Terri Blanchard has been Our Townes’ most enthusiastic, hardworking individual in the pet industry for the last 35 years. In 1993, Terri began her career at the Pet Stop; and purchased the business in 2013. On September 1st, Terri and her shop relocated to the Peter Harris Plaza where her furry customers have enjoyed larger day care, grooming and boarding accommodations. As a small business owner who has worked extremely hard to grow this business (and compete with much larger, corporate stores), you can be assured that your business will be greatly appreciated. The Pet Stop is full retail shop; selling everything you need for the pets in your life. You can also purchase small animals such as, bunny rabbits, birds, guinea pigs, rodents & reptiles. You can find quality products such as Nutrisource, Victor, Zignature, Fromm, Nutro, and State of Nature. Terri gets to know her human, and furry customers preferences and needs. All of your food, treats and supplies can be special ordered if they are not currently on the shelf. Her prices are competitive and of course you get the advice of an experienced professional if needed. Terri’s larger space allows The Pet Stop to expand their boarding & day care clients. All domestic pets are welcome! She will care for your pets for hours or days. From snakes to dogs, cats to fish, lizards to birds. If you are traveling and need care for your pet, Terri will care for them personally. Terri has a special large space for cats where they can lounge on a recliner chair and relax. While Terri cares for your pets, you can also have them groomed. One full side of the Pet Stop has many large fenced areas that allow your pets to see other pets and customers. They are located in the storeso they don’t feel lonely. My dogs seem quite entertained when they stay with “Aunt Terri,” and run to the car when I tell them they are going to The Pet Stop. Last week they made a new friend… Wilbur the “house” pot-belly piglet that greets all visitors. He is adorable and happy to meet new friends, so stop in and say hello. Throughout her career, Terri has rescued countless animals and placed them in forever homes. This has been the driving force behind her passion and reason for being in the pet business. She networks with customers who have lost their pets, and connects them to rescue groups and adoption groups. There will be a Grand Opening Celebration and PET PARADE & BEAUTY CONTEST in July. ALL pets are welcome to participate! First prize $500 CASH. Yes that’s right! $500! Second place, runner up gets $100 cash! Come one, come all! Bring your turtle, your dog, cat or spider. Anyone can win the $500 in cash! Details will be in the June Our Towne Magazine ad and on the Our Towne Magazine Rensco and The Pet Stop Facebook. Terri has experienced many ups and downs in her career & challenges as a small business owner. One thing goes without saying, you don’t keep a store running for 30 years if you aren’t good at it. You also don’t continue to grow your business if you aren’t good at what you do and have the support of the community and generations of pet owners. She loves East Greenbush and Columbia Turnpike and is proud to be a business owner here. Please support Terri and The Pet Stop. You will certainly realize that she can take better care of you, and your pets, than the large corporate stores. Please call 518-477-7017 to make an appointment or find

out more about products and services. Don’t forget to watch Our Towne Magazine for details about the Grand Opening and the Pet Beauty Contest.
