The Our Towne Spotlight Shines on...Fantastic Sams Debra Penesso began her career at Fantastic Sams in 1990, as a salon manager. As a seasoned hair stylist and manager, she jumped at the opportunity to purchase the salon 8 years later. As a resident of Schodack, she was thrilled to own the organization that she managed, in a community she calls home. A few years later when the Fantastic Sams on Hoosick Street in Brunswick became available, she purchased her second Rensselaer County location. Fantastic Sams is a walk-in full-service family hair salon that offers a full range of services. From cuts, color, perms, waxing and styling for special occasions such as Prom & Weddings. Their goal is to offer you the highest level of service and products. They offer a popular line of products and, most of all, are affordable. Their main goal is to have you "leave looking and feeling great about yourself." Debra is known in the industry as a technical salon owner. She continues to work with clients and exercise her creative abilities. At the same time, she is able to manage the business. Debra is a very creative person, who has a mind for business and an ability to work with the public and her staff. She is also a judge for Skills USA cosmetology competition and a proctor for the Rensselaer County VOTEC NOCTI test; a state test for cosmetology students that they must pass before they graduate cosmetology school thru VOTEC.

One of Debra's greatest feelings of accomplishment is when she hires a new stylist who has little experience and can mentor them; help them grow and become confident and successful in front of her eyes. She has many stylists who have been with her for years and is always looking to hire those who have a good work ethic, ability to work with the public and the interest to grow their skills and stay current with trends and changes in the industry. As a salon owner, Deb says that the biggest challenge for her is that it is "hard to get hair stylists who have good customer service skills, good work ethic and those who have current skills for the industry." With that said, Fantastic Sams is hiring! Please inquire at the salon. Of course, you can also find great coupons in Our Towne Magazine each month. So, next time you want to walk in and get a cut, color, waxing or style, know that Fantastic Sams is ready to serve you. Now making appointments for Wedding and PROM season! Open 7 days a week, Monday-Friday from 9-7:45, Saturday from 9-4:45 and Sunday from 10-2:45. At Fantastic Sams, you are "shopping local and supporting a small local business owner.

Continuing education and skill classes are mandatory for all Fantastic Sams employees. The company has their own educator who provides salons with a monthly calendar of continuing education classes. Stylists attend a minimum of 4 classes a year to stay current, along with attending hair shows and conventions. Most stylists attend many more of the free classes to expand their skills and learn new techniques. Debra notes that "In this field, it is very important to stay up on the current trends in the industry, so she and some of her employees go to National Conferences each year. In September, Debra and 4 stylists attended the 2018 Fantastic Sams Conference in Las Vegas, where they learned new color techniques and the latest styles and trends. The employees are compensated with a base hourly rate, plus a bonus & commission. Full time staff receive health insurance as well as retirement. Not very many salons offer such great benefits. As I was speaking with Debra, I thought that this sounds like a great company to work for.

CORNERSTONE Surveying & Mapping

Do you know where your property lines are? Don’t buy real estate without a survey!

Herman Pulcher,LS

Join us at the Greenbush YMCA (20 Community Way, East Greenbush) Saturday, April 27 for Healthy Kids Day. This free event is open to the public. All are welcome! You’re also welcome to visit the Greenbush YMCA any day to pick up your free family pass. Nowadays, many kids are involved in serious sports at an early age, so keeping them active isn’t a concern. But for those kids, like myself, who are picking daisies in the outfield, what can we do? 1.Figure out what they enjoy: I wasn’t one for team sports like soccer. I didn’t want to get bumped and jostled, and I wasn’t aggressive enough to get the ball. Through a little experimentation, though, my parents discovered that I enjoyed swimming and tennis, and I kept active through those.

If traditional sports aren’t working for your child, check out our kids’ programs such as tennis, swimming, and Junior Pacers Running club to see if solo sports are a better fit for your child.

2.Do something together: Your kids love to spend time with you and do what you do, so why not make fitness a family affair? You can go for a walk or a bike ride, or hop into free swim together to play Marco Polo. You can also enjoy family Zumba on Wednesdays at 4:30pm.

Perhaps We Need More Farms

Check out our Family Couch to 5K beginning Thursday, April 4 at 6pm, and our Nighty-Night Family Yoga class Wednesday, April 24 at 7pm.

I have always been intrigued by old farms. The barns are slowly being reclaimed by trees, vines and surely many animals find protection in it. The houses that were once the hub of activity, where everyone’s day started with a hearty breakfast and good conversation, are skeletons of what they once were. I view the rusty, longforgotten equipment placed in an overgrown field as if someone meant to come back to it the next day but they just disappeared. I have what others find to be a strange hobby. I enjoy looking into the windows of these old houses. Sometimes they are left as if the person just walked out the door, leaving behind dishes in the sink, the newspaper on the table and perhaps the remnants of what were most likely beautiful, well cared for plants in pots. A sad reminder of what was once a thriving household. I wonder if our country could use a return to those days. They had respect for hard work, your animals, your property and your neighbors. Everything you had was earned, not handed to you. There was little disrespect for those around you. Instead of living in a city full of people you didn’t know, you lived in a town or village where your neighbor had been the same family for generations and you most likely saw them every Sunday at church. Today life runs at a much faster pace. People rarely take the time to get to know their neighbors, let alone the members of their communities. It is difficult for many to feel compassion for someone they have never met and as the news plays negativity frequently perhaps we have become desensitized to it. You didn’t have time to think about what was happening on the other side of the planet, you were too busy living in your own moments. But, if there was a tragedy in your community, you can bet the first person there was the farmer, ready to help where needed.

The Woodlawn Cemetery Association of East Schodack is requesting bids for mowing and trimming of the cemetery for 2019. The Cemetery is approximately 7 acres, and is located at 111 Burden Lake Road in East Schodack. The bidder should be prepared to begin mowing in the Spring (roughly mid-May) and continue for the remainder of the 2019 mowing season. Mowing frequency will be on an “as needed” basis, roughly every 3 to 4 weeks (depending on weather conditions), as agreed to between an authorized Cemetery representative and the bidder. The bidder must provide all lawn care equipment, and must provide proof of liability insurance. Please submit bids by April 15th to the following address: Woodlawn Cemetery, P.O. Box 14, East Schodack, N.Y. 12063

Tips on how to KEEP YOUR KIDS ACTIVE THIS SUMMER

www.ourtownerensco.com

3.Eat healthy food together: No matter how active we are, if we don’t fuel our bodies well, being active is not enough for a healthy life. We all know how important the family meal is, but take it one step further and try cooking together. Let your kids get to know the ingredients, what makes them healthy, and take some ownership of their food. For a great time together, join us for some of our Makeover the Family meal events to learn new recipes and have fun together. Call 518.477.2570 today to learn more. Keeping kids active and healthy isn’t hard; sometimes, it just requires being creative. Listening to the needs of the children in your life, finding something they enjoy, and investing some time to do something together doesn’t just result in healthy kids, but in a healthy family. Submitted by Catherine Van Orden, Wellness Director at the Greenbush Branch of the Capital District YMCA. You can reach Cathy at the Greenbush YMCA by calling 518.477.2570. The Castleton-Schodack Kiwanis Club was proud to sponsor Maple Hill High School student Makaila Maier who attended the HOBY NY East Leadership Seminar last June. The Hugh O’Brian leadership seminar is for sophomores and includes students from all over the state. Only one sophomore per school is chosen to attend this prestigious event each year and Makaila was chosen to attend last year. She was accepted to go back this year as a Junior Staff member. For over 5 decades HOBY has inspired young people all over the world to develop their leadership and critical thinking skills to achieve their highest potential. Makaila states this conference has changed her life and helped inspire her toward a life of service. Congratulations Makaila! The Castleton-Schodack Kiwanis Club will be firing up its grills and selling its famous Chicken BBQ dinners on Sunday April 14, 2019. This is one of our largest fundraisers and the majority of the money stays within our community helping to improve the lives of local children. The cost of the dinner is $10.00. Dinners can be picked up from 12:00 noon until 4:00PM at the Castleton Fire Company located on Green Ave. in Castleton. To pre-order your dinner or for more information call 518-732- 4228. Walkins are also welcome. If Chicken BBQ is not your thing, we always appreciate donations. Give us a call or stop by that day. Checks can be made payable to the Castleton-Schodack Kiwanis Club and mailed to PO Box 42 Castleton, NY 12033. Like Sweets? The Maple Hill High School Key Club will also be holding a bake sale on this date. Interested in joining the Kiwanis and making a difference in our community? Community members are always welcome to attend our meetings to see what we are all about. Meetings are held every Wednesday from 6:30-8pm at the Schodack Diner. I'm ok, They're Definitely Ok By Daryl Bart

Today I had the opportunity to attend an awards ceremony sponsored by the YMCA that recognized outstanding students from all over Rensselaer county. I was so very impressed, by the diversity of these students interests, ideas, activities and efforts, and by the fact that that they were all so committed to social change, and to doing good, and were growing into their individual greatness, at so young an age. The keynote speaker was a local college educator who spoke passionately about success and failure and opportunities. She made me realize that sometimes it’s important to remind yourself that success is the sum total of the things that we’ve tried and failed, not just of the things we tried and succeeded. This was an incredibly hopeful conversation and I hung on her every word. It made me think about parenting. Many days, parenting is hard. It’s feeling like I’m on the hamster wheel of everything from figuring out if we’re doing it right, to avoiding conflicts and working on communicating, to actually enjoying each others company. When my first child became a teenager, I thought, “This is easy. Why is everyone complaining and drinking so much darn wine?” And then... my #2 became that teenager, complete with a more complex way of communicating and seeing the world. She’s made up of the all confidence of conquering the world yet with a sarcastic and questioning intellect that encompasses a sensitive and self-conscious interior. It's amazing how siblings can be so different. But here I was this morning, watching her gracefully be publicly acknowledged and stand in her own form of greatness, alongside these other impressive young people. I know for certain that she (they) doesn’t see what we all can see. Potential. Strength. Impact. She doesn't know what she wants for the future or where her passions lay, and it causes her great angst, feeling somehow less than, and maybe behind the curve. Her competitive nature is fueled by measuring herself against those around her, while not yet realizing that there no definitive way to calculate that which is innate in each person. The dichotomy to this morning’s event is that right before we left for the event, I was scrolling social media only to read a post of an article criticizing parents today, for being too present, for being too involved and whose actions were impacting their kids ability to be self sufficient.

12

www.ourtownerensco.com

I find myself conflicted with this. I kinda agreed. Then again, I really didn’t. Who is to say what is the right way to do something that doesn’t come with a handbook. I mean there are always exceptions. I have two very different kids, who need two very different kinds of parenting and intervention. Their independence comes in steps and waves. As does my independence from them. So, I guess I’m guilty. I help them with the details, but if I am being truthful, that is more for me than it is for them. I collaborate until I can turn the task over to them. Somehow, they keep proving that they will rise to the occasion, when given the chance. And sometimes they have to step backwards to surge ahead, as do I. Kind of what that speaker was talking about today. Recently, while venting with a fellow mom of teens, she shared this anecdote and it really has helped me process this journey of parenting. It went something like ... “You hand your child this backpack. It’s filled with your hopes and dreams and all the lessons you have for them. It’s also stuffed with the way you see the world, your stories, your shared experiences and expectations. Then one day they turn to you in an emotional explosion, unzip that backpack, and unceremoniously dump it on the floor, leaving you convinced you’ve done something terribly wrong. But then, they start putting all of that stuff back into the backpack. It might not be in the same order that you gave it to them, and it might not even contain all of the items, but most of it will be there, and you will know then, that you did your job” I want the best for my kids. I want them to be able to make eggs, do the laundry, write a good thank you note and not run out of money, among so many other things, like get a job and not live at home forever. I also want to help them not make all of the same mistakes that we know we’ve already made, without protecting them completely from learning the lessons they need to learn. Some experiences, like heartbreak, and rejection, and loss, cannot be buffered, and conversely, the elation of winning, and falling in love, will be uniquely theirs. I'm certain of this today, having witnessed only a small cross section of the amazingness that is this next generation. Today I applauded and celebrated and was so impressed by each and every one of these unique students being recognized, some confident in the direction of their dreams and others simply dreamers. So I use that backpack metaphor as a sort of mantra and have often shared it when I meet another parent, on the same hamster wheel, hoping it helps them the way it has helped me. Together we can agree that we’re doing ok, and so are these kids. And hopefully, they’ve brought some wine.

DR. ALLEN ZIEKER IS ONE OF THE FIRST CATARACT SURGEONS IN UPSTATE NEW YORK TO PERFORM INNOVATIVE GLAUCOMA SURGERY On February 12, 2019, Allen Zieker, M.D. of Ophthalmic Consultants of the Capital Region, implanted the Hydrus® Microstent in four glaucoma patients during cataract surgery. The Hydrus Microstent was approved by the FDA in August, 2018 and is an implantable, flexible, metal tube designed to reduce eye pressure in patients with mild to moderate primary open angle glaucoma. Glaucoma is a group of diseases that damage the eye’s optic nerve and can result in vision loss and blindness. Glaucoma is known as “the silent thief of sight,” as there are no warning signs or symptoms. Glaucoma is a leading cause of blindness in the United States. More than three million Americans are living with glaucoma. Glaucoma is not curable, and vision lost cannot be regained. However, with diagnosis and treatment it’s possible to stop any additional vision loss. “We recommend everyone over the age of 40 to get annual comprehensive eye exams to test eye intraocular pressure and carefully examine the optic nerve,” explained Dr. Allen Zieker. “If we can find glaucoma early we can preserve vision.” About the Hydrus Microstent About the size of an eyelash, this new minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS) device is one of the most studied to date. With more than 6,000 patients treated, the Hydrus Microstent helps reduce eye pressure by restoring the patient’s natural outflow pathway (known as Schlemm’s canal) through which fluid (called aqueous humor) exits the eye. The FDA approved the Hydrus Microstent for use in combination with cataract surgery. “As an ophthalmologist and cataract surgeon, I’m always researching new technology and medications to deliver the best possible treatments for our patients at Ophthalmic Consultants of the Capital Region,”Dr. Allen Zieker stated. “The Hydrus Microstent provides us with a powerful, new tool in our arsenal to help us manage glaucoma.”

About Ophthalmic Consultants of the Capital Region At Ophthalmic Consultants of the Capital Region, we offer a comprehensive model of eye care with experienced specialists, ophthalmologists & optometrists. We have 5 convenient locations in Albany, Clifton Park, Schenectady, Schodack, and Troy. To schedule an appointment visit myoccr.com or call 518-777-2777. About Allen Zieker, M.D. Dr. Allen Zieker has been in practice as an ophthalmologist and cataract surgeon for more than 33 years. Working with cataract patients is his passion; in fact, Dr. Zieker performs more than 1,500 cataract surgeries annually. During his career, he has completed well over 7,000 laser procedures and several thousand astigmatic surgeries. Dr. Allen Zieker was the founder of Troy Eye Associates and a founding member of Albany-Troy Cataract and Laser Associates. Expansion into communities surrounding Albany and Troy led to the renaming of the practice to Ophthalmic Consultants of the Capital Region. The goal of the expansion is to better serve patients from all the areas of the Capital District. Dr. Allen Zieker is the president of the practice and director of cataract surgery.

April 2019

Dear Our Towne Readers, Happy Spring! Officially it’s here; Of course, yesterday it snowed and today was 60 degrees. New York certainly keeps us guessing (I am sooo over it). I think I’ll wait until May before packing away the winter clothes and snow gear. Planning a summer vacation to the tropics is keeping me going as I nest in the house working and binge watching Netflix. It’s amazing how quickly a day can pass when you watch 10 shows in a row, surrounded by fur babies, a laptop and snacks.

Aside from a few of those lazy days here and there, this month has been challenging to say the least. Recreating files and advertisements after the “water incident” that wiped out my laptop a month ago has been quite the learning experience. Time consuming, stressful and exhausting work has been done to get this April issue into your hands. Well, I most certainly learned my lesson; back up files EVERY day in at least two places. Please learn from my mistake and spare yourself the agony and grief!

I am curious how many parents have already started signing the kids up for camp and summer activities... Yes, it is that time again! We have MANY options in this issue to pick from on pages 6-11. April brings us more daylight, time outside for exercise, recreation and home improvement. This issue includes many home improvement businesses that are eager to landscape & maintain your property, repair or replace your asphalt driveways, and of course improve your homes value with repairs and improvements. My customers (Advertisers in this magazine) are such hard working people and I have developed special relationships with many. I was even a witness at the wedding of my friend Tein, the new owner of Hollywood Nails. It was a special honor and I was touched to be asked. This magazine is most certainly built on personal relationships and similar goals. Another sure sign of Spring is that SMILES in Nassau, and O’Kennys Express in Valatie are opening the ice cream windows! Please let the businesses in the magazine know you saw them in Our Towne when you support their local, independent businesses. Thank you for reading Our Towne Magazine, supporting small business and Happy Easter. Jennifer Felts, Fellow Small Business Owner & Publisher

Mouth

By Lapinski Dental

The other day I was talking to a patient and a topic came up where I replied, “no one has asked that in my 27 years of being a dentist”.

selaer Count elaer Count

Then it hit me. I realized that I’ve been a dentist for more than ½ my life. Longer than I’ve been married or a parent or than I lived in Brooklyn. It’s funny, how time seems to pass more quickly now, yet can go in slow motion, all at the same time. While most of us seem to have more crammed into our days than ever before, milestones are the perfect opportunity to take a moment and reflect. And this month is a milestone for me. Lapinski Dental’s 22nd anniversary. WOW. I knew I’d be a dentist back in my teens, inspired by my older sister, Mary and my cousin Elyse, who were both dentists. Coincidentally, we celebrated both of their retirements this year, Elyse as an orthodontist and Mary as a hospital residency dental director. When I opened the office, I had no idea it would entail so much more than filling cavities and pulling teeth. Back on that opening day, in true April Fools day fashion, we awoke to 12” of snow. If you can recall Route 4 office back in those days, it used to have a very wide shoulder and our patients actually had to park right on Route 4, since we didn’t yet have the parking lot. Daryl and I were out there, shoveling the road like crazy, making spaces for my new patients. Over the years, I learned that each patient comes to the chair with a different story and vastly different expectations. We see our patients a few times a year and so we see folks grow, succeed, age, recover and endure losses. I learned to be a people person from the dental chair. There’s a lot of gratitude for the community that supports us, but most importantly, for the staff that works along side of me every day. Dr. Barile, our talented and smart associate, our caring and competent chairside assistants, Joyce, Kayla and Huong. Our hygienists you all love, Lisa, Chris and Jess. And, of course the faces you see first, our administrative team, Cindy, Karen, Paula and Darlene. It truly takes a village to deliver the kind of service that our patients have come to expect. It’s been said, If you build it, they will come. So we did that. We built up that small office and added a parking lot. We expanded the building then made an even larger parking lot. We built it and you continue to show us that you trust us with your dental health, and we sincerely appreciate it. And truthfully, you still might see me out there early on a snowy morning, shoveling to make sure we’re ready for business, because as much as things grow and change, some things stay the same. For that, I’m smiling. www.LapinskiDental.com DrJoe@LapinskiDental.com

What If You Had An Emergency And No One Came? If you have an emergency and call 911, you expect well-trained professionals to respond. For those of us who live outside the major cities in the Capital District, the people who respond will be our friends and neighbors who have taken the time to train and prepare themselves to help others in their time of need. In the past, this voluntary system worked well, but today this system is in trouble as fewer people are volunteering to do these jobs. If this continues, many local governments will have to hire people to do these jobs for us. It is estimated that the cost for a paid fire and/or ambulance service would increase property taxes between 10 to 15 percent. You can keep this from happening by volunteering to join your local fire or ambulance company.

Take Back the Night 2019 In observance of National Crime Victims' Rights Week, April 7 - 13th, 2019, the East Greenbush/Lower Renssealer County communities are invited to participate in this year's Take Back the Night Walk. It will be held Thursday evening, April 11th, 2019, at Onderdonk Park on Hampton Manor Lake beginning at 6:00pm. A brief ceremony will be held led by Martha LasherWarner, President of the Family and Friends of Liza Ellen Warner Association. She will introduce our special guests and government officials who will be joining in the walk. All in attendance will be invited to demonstrate their own support by joining in the mile-long walk around the lake. Close to 100 persons participated in the 2018 event. East Greenbush has a particularly poignant reason for this gathering. Two members of the town who grew up in these neighborhoods - Liza Ellen Warner and Nikki Hart - lost their lives as victims of domestic violence. Martha, Liza Ellen's mother, notes that "Victim empowerment is a central tenant of our work." Warner who is a member of the National Board of Trustees of Parents of Murdered Children goes on to state, "by engaging the entire community, we are able to maximize and leverage existing resources to better serve the victims of crime and provide the necessary support through the journey toward healing." Onderdonk Park is located across from Hampton Manor Lake at the corner of Hampton Avenue and Lakeshore Drive, East Greenbush.

All are invited to follow the Family and Friends of Liza on Facebook for event updates and fundraiser Fire and Ambulance companies are looking for those John or Jane Does who want to do something to help their community. They need people activities www.facebook. com/FFLEW.inc with all types of skills and vocations. Yes, they need people who are willing to fight fires or become EMTs, but they also need people who are willing to help by driving the fire truck or ambulance, who are willing to hold a red flag or flashlight and direct traffic or help keep sightseers away from the emergency scene. There are many other jobs that need to be done during an emergency situation that the average person could do to help out. You’re not expected to have any special skills. They’ll provide the training, gear and equipment that you’ll need.

Christian H. Dribusch Philip J. Danaher

Don’t be bashful. Stop by your local fire station or ambulance garage and talk to any of the people there. They will be glad to answer any of the questions that you have about volunteering. You can also get more information at www.fasny.com or by calling 1-800-FIRELINE. Or go to your local Fire Department on Recruit NY Day on April 27 or 28th. For more info go to the fasny.com web page

Your reward will be the satisfaction of knowing that in some way you have helped someone in his or her time of need. You’ll also meet your neighbors and develop a sense of community by working together to provide a vital service to your hometown. Think about how bad you would feel if “You had an emergency and no one came?” Think what you can do to make sure it does not happen. Ask the Audiologist

Document Shredding & Electronics Recycling Event

By Madison Hearing Center

Q: Are there any brands of hearing

Eileen Nagy, AuD,

aid batteries that are better than one another?

A: Not necessarily. There are a few

factors that will impact the efficacy of the batteries, but they would apply to any brand of battery. The first thing to look out for is the voltage--when hearing aids used to be analog, the batteries at 1.4 volts (v) worked sufficiently, but when hearing aids became digital it was found that batteries at 1.45v did a little better. All hearing aids sold now are digital, but not all battery companies make 1.45v batteries. You can find the voltage, usually, on the bottom of the front or back of the package. Also, be sure to honor the 2-minute rule. A sticker covers a tiny hole or a couple holes on the battery, and once removed it exposes them so that air can go into the battery to activate it. If the battery goes right into the hearing aid without sitting for 2 minutes, it won't fully activate and that will cut down on its lifespan. If the sticker remains off for 2 minutes, that allows for the battery to be fully activated and work the best. Always double check your expiration dates too, even if the expiration is a few months away it may have a shorter lifespan or not work at all.

Family Foot Care, P.L.L.C. Podiatric Medicine & Surgery

Dr. Nancy Ann Quimby Dr. Kurt W Relation I’m so ready for spring that I walk our gardens for any new signs of buds. It’s the beginning of all there is to come this spring and summer. We’re looking forward to Little League’s opening day, parades throughout the Town of Kinderhook, music in the square, food nights in the village and so much more! This year, The American Legion is celebrating 100 years since their inception in 1919 after World War I. Commander Thomas S. Burrall of The American Legion, John W. McConnell Post 47 presented the Town of Kinderhook with a Certification of Appreciation and a commemorative coin. The Town Board is honored to be recognized and thanks The American Legion for continuing to be a voice for Veterans, not only around Kinderhook, but in New York and throughout the country. Some of their huge accomplishments are the creation of the Veterans Affairs in 1930 and the first G.I. Bill in 1944. A couple of our local restaurants have made positive changes. Valatie Bar & Grill recently started a brunch, which is every Sunday 11-3. Another change is at Ryan’s Bar & Grill where Chef Jereme Keough brings his “Wicked Good” cooking skills and plans to gradually introduce new menu items. We have so many wonderful restaurants in Kinderhook and I wish them much success. Next month, more news on Cantele’s new car wash! SOME UPCOMING EVENTS AROUND KINDERHOOK:

April 1, 7-8 - Kinderhook Town Board Meeting at Martin H. Glynn Municipal Building April 3, 7-9 –Paint Party at The Grand at Barnwell April 5, 5:30-8 – Free Friday Community Meal at Kinderhook Reformed Church April 6, 10-12 – Annual Easter Fun day at Kinderhook Reformed Church (through grade 5) April 13, 5:30-8:30 – Parents Night Out at Kinderhook Reformed Church April 14, 8-10:30 – Breakfast with the Easter Bunny at Niverville Fire Station 1 April 20, 10-12 – Northern Columbia Lions Club Egg Hunt with The Grand at Barnwell at Callan Park, Valatie April 20, 12-2 - Village of Kinderhook Egg Hunt, pics w/ bunny & ice cream April 27, 10-1 – Northern Columbia Lions Club Antiques Appraisal at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church April 27, 7-10 – Rory Block in concert at Valatie Community Theater I am a wife, mom and councilwoman in the Town of Kinderhook. My goal is to keep you abreast of interesting news coming out of our Town. I want to share the things that mean so much to us as a family and member of this great community. There are approximately 8,400 people in the Town of Kinderhook, which is comprised of Kinderhook, Niverville and Valatie. Have you heard of custom molded orthotics? Orthotics are devices that go into your shoes to better align your feet and lower extremities. There are many kinds of orthotics on the market, ranging from more basic “off the shelf ” devices found in various retailers which can sometimes have a very high price tag, all the way to state of the art custom molded devices which are sometimes covered by insurance. Our doctors use the latest technology to perform 3D scanning of your feet and provide top of the line devices that will provide the best support for your feet! Custom orthotics are a great first line conservative treatment for flat feet, heel pain, pediatric foot pain, high arches, bunions, neuromas and more. One common misconception about orthotics is that they will not fit into your shoes. The custom devices offered by our doctors provide numerous styles including high performance athletic orthotics, full support orthotics for more severe foot issues, orthotics that will fit into professional dress shoes or even high heels, diabetic insoles, children’s devices and more! If you are being affected by a foot condition, or just want to find out how you can get better support for your feet, schedule an appointment for a consultation today to find out which type of orthotic is best for you!

NEWS FROM THE ANCHOR FOOD PANTRY & THRIFT STORE Here at the Anchor, we are gearing up for Easter and all the Holiday brings. We have generous community members including the Town Board members & the local Churches who help support our endeavors to bring a nice Holiday to all. This year our plan is to give out hams & all the fixing to our families. All the fixing include fresh carrots, onions( donated by a special "angel" of the Anchor, potatoes( donated by 5 Guys restaurant), canned pineapple, canned green beans, jello, cake mixes & frosting( donated by Hannaford). Donations are always appreciated especially monetary donations to help us purchase the hams which are generously provided at cost thru Hannaford. The Religious Ed class from Sacred Heart Church meets with us to pack the food bags before the give away date. This is a tremendous help to our staff getting all this food sorted & packed. There is a very generous family in the Village that donated beautifully decorated Easter baskets that are given out to all the children that sign up. They put all their talent & expenses into these baskets in memory of a deceased loved one. This is how they remember & keep his spirit alive. A heartfelt thank you for your generosity. The "Mustard Seed" club from Sacred Heart Church are also working on Easter baskets for distribution so that no child goes without. Thank you all! The Fund Raiser that were held this month were exceptionally helpful in keeping us functioning for the Spring & Summer. The Maple Hill students held a "Hoops for Hunger" basketball event to raise funds and canned goods to keep our shelves stocked. The funds collected help keep our yearly food budget on the plus side. We do have to buy food each month from the Regional Food Bank. There is a slight misconception that all our food is donated; No it's not! This is why we have these fund raiser. Also, there was a "Dine to Donate" fund raiser held at the Recovery Room in East Greenbush which donates a percentage of their intake for a night. Again, a special thanks for all your help and donations. We always accept donations for our Thrift shop. We accept seasonal clothing for men, women & children as well as shoes & handbags. We also accept linens, towels, housewares, toys & games in good condition. Furniture is the only thing not accepted because of limited space. This again helps us off set our expenses. Anyone is welcome to come in and shop when we are open: Monday's 5 to 7; Tuesday's & Thursday's 9 to 2 & the first Saturday of the month from 10 to 1. Stock rotates fast so there is always something new to look at. For those that can not make our hours, there is a bin at the Schodack Transfer Station designated for the Anchor and it is picked up every week. So remember this as you Spring clean your clothes! The Anchor would like to thank our Community members, the Schodack Town Board, the local Churches and especially The Sisters of the Resurrection for their generous support through out the year. Save this date, The Hill will be having a fund raiser for us May 16. Follow The Anchor Food Pantry Castleton on Facebook for more information in the future.
