The Our Towne Spotlight Shines On... A-Z L andscaping Steven has been trained and certified by VERSA-LOK Retaining Wall Systems, CST Brick Paver Systems and Techo Block Wall & Patio Systems. Due to his certifications and many years of “on the job experience,” he has been able to perfect and achieve very minimal settling and perfectly pitched patios and walkways. Your patio & walkway should look brand new for MANY years to come, if installed by a professional such as Steven.

Local landscape artist Steven Noel is beautifying Our Towne homes one project at a time. If you are looking for a landscaper or hardscaper (patios, stone work, sidewalks, retaining walls, water features), to enhance your home, look no further! A-Z Landscaping promises to increase your homes beauty and value with their “flawless work.” I can tell you from personal experience, A-Z will not disappoint. Shortly after returning home from the United States Marine Corps. in 2000, A-Z Landscaping was established by Steven Noel. This motivated man, with a walk behind lawn mower & snowmobile trailer, quickly gained a collection of loyal customers. By 2003, his reliability & strong work ethic earned him 60 accounts and was mowing nearly 80 acres a week. Burned out and bored from the repetition of mowing, Steven decided he needed a change that would allow him to be more creative. In 2004, it was time for that change. The mowing business was sold & new trucks and equipment were purchased. It was time to chase his dream. Doesn’t this sound like the “American Dream?” I love these stories...For the last 16 years Steven has been full steam ahead beautifying & creating unbelievable landscapes & water features in our community with A-Z Landscaping.

Steven works with a small crew that is like a “well-oiled machine.” There are extensive steps that are to be completed that are very critical when installing patios and walkways. Bigger landscaping companies tend to overlook these steps, or send crew members that may not be properly trained. So, Steven warns the average homeowner of the “Glorified Lawn Mower” who tells you that they can install patios, walkways, and calls themselves a Hardscaper. For this reason, A-Z Landscaping GUARANTEES all of their work and you can be rest-assured that you will be impressed by the flawless end product. Back by popular demand, after many years of customers asking Steven to maintain his landscape creations & their property, he has decided to expand his business to include Property & Landscape Maintenance. New services that are available at a per visit or contract price include (but not limited to): Mowing, mulching, weeding, pruning, spring & fall clean-ups, landscape lighting, “Holiday” Light Installation & Dismantle, pressure washing & snow plowing. Hard work & dedication to his craft and company has truly paid off. Steven does all of his own work, and will pay attention to the smallest details. A-Z Landscaping is yet another example of a Our Towne small business that is finding success in our community. Let him customize a creative solution for your landscaping and hardscaping challenges! If you are interested in meeting with Steven for a free consultation, call (518) 423-0611 and visit his website: www.azlandscaping.com where you can see just a sample of the workmanship and creativity that A-Z Landscaping has to offer.

Unsure of what to do with that old patio or walkway? (SEE PICTURES BELOW) Tired of your deck & want to upgrade to a patio? What about those front steps that are falling apart? Steven is a Hardscaper with a creative & budget-minded approach. He prides himself on listening to the needs and tastes of the customer, and offers various creative ideas to fit their budget. Even the most challenging landscaping & hardscaping projects are welcomed by Steven. He is a detail oriented, creative and reliable professional who is also highly certified & trained.

BEFORE

AFTER We had multiple estimates, but Steven was willing to think “out of the box.” We told him our budget and goals and he was able to brainstorm with us many options that would make us happy without breaking the bank. He was reliable, professional and the outcome blew us away. Corey Hutchinson Our new walkway, as seen in the photos to the left, has transformed the front of our house. People are always stopping by to ask who installed our brick walkway. It looks more beautiful than we ever could have imagined. Steve and his crew did an amazing job and were willing to do whatever it took to make us happy customers. Chris & Jennifer F.

KIDS SUMMER PLANNING GUIDE Busy Kids= Happy Kids

Greenbush YMCA Summer Camp 2015 As the new Director for summer camp at the Greenbush Area YMCA,I’m eager to create a summer experience your kids will love. My name is Alysha Branch. I’m also the Child Care Director for the Greenbush Area YMCA, and have been working for the Y since I was 16, including every summer at camp and child care. As a mother of 3 boys, I appreciate how important it is to find a fun and safe place for your children to be while you’re at work. With a mother’s intuition and being a camper at heart, I’ve already been hard at workto ensure thatthis summer offersa great experience for everycamper. With the help of my Camp Assistant Ashley Champitto (who’s a teacher as well) we’ve made some improvements to our summer camp that we hope will make for the best summer ever! To start, we’ve added 3 full weeks of specialty camps. These include LEGO camp, Savvy Skills camp, and Active Kids camp. We’ve alsoadded new trips to our Travel Camp, including Sacandaga Tubing and YMCA Camp Chingachgook on Lake George. Plus! Every camperhas the option to join us for JP Cruise dance party! These are just some of the fun additions we’ve made to camp. We’ve also made some improvements to camp this year, based onlast summer’s weekly parent surveys. Improvements include a better process for ensuring that all campers are protected with sunscreen, and an improved lost and found process. We’re also improving our parent communication, to ensure that you enjoy a stress-free summer along with your children! This summer, we’re also bringing more activities to camp for children to experience, such as Red Cross workshops and the Scotia Glenville Travelling Museum! I encourage your family to come to our next camp event, Friday, May 15th from 6—8pm for fun activities and games for new and returning campers. You’re also welcome to join us for our Summer Camp Open House, set for Saturday, June 20th from 12—4pm. Both events are free and open to the community. On behalf of Ashley and me, we hope to see you soon, at one of our Open House events or any time that’s convenient for you to take a tour! Please know how much we would love to welcome your child to the Y this summer! Please call me for a tour, or for more information at 518.477.2570 or email me at ABranch@CDYMCA.org. HVCC’s Kids on Campus Offers a Range of Summer Fun

Moms and dads: are you looking for a comprehensive summer camp program that offers fun and educational full- and half-day programs? Are you looking for a program that has hands-on enrichment activities for elementary and middle schoolers, technology enrichment programs, theater and comedy programs and a wide array of athletic camps? Then look to Hudson Valley Community College’s Kid’s on Campus programs this summer. For more than two decades, Hudson Valley has offered a variety of high quality, diverse summer programs for kids. The lineup of Athletic Camps offered at the college continues to grow this summer. Returning are instructional camps focusing on basketball, dodgeball, football, golf, lacrosse, softball, soccer, T-ball, tennis, track and field, volleyball and wrestling. The popular Adventure and “All Sports” camp also will again be offered this year. Sean Fagan will return to the Hudson Valley campus to offer four separate one-week sessions in the circus arts – Circus Theatricks. Open to children ages 6 to 15, students will be introduced to juggling, tumbling, partner acrobatics and magic. The college’s Summer Academy lets elementary and middle school students choose from a variety of half-day, week-long courses. Scheduled so children can attend in the morning, afternoon, or both, the courses explore topics like technology, history and forensic science in a fun learning environment. Students can learn how to make their own video game, become a better cook or study creative writing. The college will host week-long Technology Enrichment Programs at Bethlehem Central Middle School and at TEC-SMART in Malta, which encourage hands-on exploration of science and technology among students in the middle grades. A new high school-level program will also be offered at TEC-SMART for those entering grades 9-11.

Valatie Boy Scouts Looking Yard Sale Donations

for

Boy Scouts from Troop 114 Valatie are raising money for a two week trip to Colorado and Utah, where the scouts will participate in mountain climbing, canyoneering, desert hiking, whitewater rafting, camping, and other high adventure activities. This trip will have lasting benefit for the scouts, as it will help them build character, improve and hone their physical fitness, teamwork and outdoors-related skills, and help them appreciate the environment, geology, and history of our nation. The troop has been raising funds throughout the fall and winter, to help ensure that every scout can participate in this once in a lifetime opportunity. The troop’s next fundraiser is a yard sale to be held from 9:00 to 2:00 on May 16th, 2015 at the First Presbyterian Church, on Church Street in Valatie (across from the former Martin H. Glynn School). The yard sale will coincide with the Church’s annual Plant and Bake Sale. The scouts plan to sell various donated household goods and collectibles, along with candy and homemade firestarters. The scouts have already received some interesting donations of old maps and collectibles that will be sold at the yard sale. Scoutmaster Rich Slovak is looking forward to the event. “People can get rid of items that they don’t need, and by donating them to us, will help us raise money for our trip while making sure the items find a new home at a reasonable cost”, he said. “It’s a win-win for everyone”. Slovak also noted his appreciation of the community support for the scouts fund raising. " We have had very successful fundraising events for our Out West Trip thanks to community support, and we hope that trend continues", Slovak stated. Anyone interested in donating items for the yard sale can contact Scoutmaster Rich Slovak at slovakcarpentry@gmail.com or (518) 755-2116 to arrange for pickup, or can drop off items at the First Presbyterian Church in Valatie during Tuesday evening scout meetings from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM. Boy Scout Troop 2114, whose focus is high-adventure outdoor activities, meets every Tuesday night from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church on Church Street in Valatie. Any boy between the age of 11 to 17 can join; the troop has members from Columbia, Rensselaer, Albany, and Dutchess Counties. The troop has at least one outdoor activity every month, including hiking, backpacking, camping, rock climbing, caving, whitewater rafting, snowshoeing, and other similar activities. For more information, visit http://www.bsa2114.legrego.com, or contact the Scoutmaster at slovakcarpentry@gmail.com or (518) 755-2116

Dear Readers, Now that May is here I think we are all ready to get outside and enjoy life, surrounded by green grass, flowers & leaves on the trees. If you are not keen on the idea of maintaining your property, this issue has many local businesses who will mow, mulch & maintain your property for you so that you have more time to relax and enjoy life. The Our Towne Mother’s Day contest allowed me to read about some really terrific Moms and how their children felt they were exceptional. As a Mom, I realize that the simple, daily moments between my children really shape their view of me as a Mom. Just complimenting them on simple moments and characteristics builds up their confidence, and I believe has given them a strong foundation in life. Encouraging them through new and difficult situations and loving them unconditionally (even when I am yelling at them to put away their treasures left all over the house). Yes, we all have moments when we are “critical.” I always tell my girls, even when I am being the “bad guy,” that it is my job to teach them life lessons so they can grow up to be responsible, caring, empathetic & positive adults. If I don’t teach them right from wrong, and how to handle themselves in situations, who will? Guiding them through life, supporting and challenging them in a loving home is what being a Mom is all about. Nobody is perfect, so learn from your failures and mistakes and move forward. Of course, this is the kind of Mom that I want to be; because that is the kind of Mom that I was blessed with. There isn’t a day that goes by that I am not thankful and feel so very lucky to have the title of Mom. So this year, take time to thank that person in your life who has been a Mom to you. It may not be the woman who brought you into this world; a Mother is that person who has loved, supported, guided, taught you through your life in the good times and bad. This issue is filled with so many local businesses who offer products and services to say THANK YOU to your Mom. Maybe a relaxing massage, gift certificate to a salon, flowers or plants to fill her garden? On May 25th, many Our Towne communities will be hosting parades to acknowledge community emergency groups and our Military. Enjoy or even participate in the parades around Our Towne and take some time to thank those you know who have risked their lives to protect yours. Thank you for reading Our Towne & make sure you LIKE Our Towne Magazine on Facebook to stay updated all month long on community events and promotions & services.

Eric Renaud, M.A.c, Owner

Can aCupunCture Help Me? Mary G. from Nassau asks: “Can acupuncture assist with weight loss?” Yes, acupuncture treatment can be a great part of a comprehensive weight loss program, helping to reduce stress, emotional eating and fatigue. At the same time, many patients report improved sleep, and better overall digestion. I also often observe that patients trying to lose weight will have occasional flare ups of knee, foot, or back pain as they begin new exercise programs. Tending to these issues helps to keep them active, so they get encouraging returns from their new lifestyle. Wondering how Acupuncture can help you? The Home to a New Generation The Spinney at Pond View The active “55 and better” generation has many living options these days from continuing to live in your two-story home, to renting an apartment in a multi-level high rise building amongst your peers. With so many choices out there it can be difficult to distinguish those qualities of a future home that you long for the most. While a lot of communities have similar amenities such as 24 hour emergency maintenance, inclusive cable and internet services, in-unit washer and dryers; how many also offer direct-access attached garages? Personalized access via your private front porch? Private rear patios? One story living with no one living above or below you? If these are the extra amenities you have been looking for and have not found in a future home yet, look no further than The Spinney at Pond View. The Spinney at Pond View is an age-qualified, active adult community in the heart of Castleton-On-Hudson, built on the model of being the Home to a New Generation. “55 and better” active adults can continue to live independently in private cottages without the woes of homeownership – think no more snow shoveling, salting or spring yard clean-up activities. With all of this newfound free time on your hands, you can participate in the activities planned by the community’s Activities Coordinator which can vary from wine and cheese get togethers, to charity walks, garage sales, and movie nights. Partaking in these activities are perfect ways to fill your time and meet your new neighbors! Due to its popularity, The Spinney at Pond View’s community is growing! The next Phase of the community will consist of 70 additional cottages and a free-standing Welcome Center for residents including a pool, fitness center and activity space. If it sounds like The Spinney at Pond View’s cottages are the right fit for you, come tour the community’s Model Cottage 7 days a week from 12 – 4PM. The Spinney at Pond View is conveniently located off of I-90, Exit 10. Take Miller Road to Pond View. Call (518) 479-0800 and find out why the Spinney has become the Home to a New Generation, right here in Our Towne!

THE VALUE OF LANDSCAPING By Cathy Graziano Here is a simple but highly effective way to increase the value of your property: landscaping. By investing in shrubbery, trees, grass, plants and flowers, you increase a home worth by nearly 15 percent, according to several studies. In fact, landscaping is one of the best means of immediately improving a house’s appearance without exceeding your budget. Think about the benefits that naturally accrue from properly landscaping your house or any other real estate: The building looks attractive, signifying that the owner takes the time to prune, mow, water, seed and sculpt the surrounding styles, features and ornaments. At minimum, an investment in some basic landscaping is a virtual guarantee that your home’s value will increase more easily. Studies abound concerning these issues, proving thatlandscaping is a sound idea. In recent years, homeownersspent $37.7 billion caring for their property, up from $22.5billion five years previously, according to the NationalGardening Association. More to the point, consumers almost always value a landscaped home more than a nonlandscapedone. A Society of Real Estate Appraisers surveyrevealed that 95 percent of the appraisers responding tothe survey believed that landscaping adds to the dollarvalue of residential real estate, while 99 percent of themsaid it enhanced the sales appeal of residentialreal estate.By any definition, these figures arephenomenal. Landscapingcan have a huge effect on property values. Bear in mind that landscaping is a rather inclusive term, covering everything from decks, trees, patios, fountainsand paths. Given the latitude of this subject, and based upon people’s own priorities, it is essential for homeowners to avoid arbitrary decisions that undermine the inherent worth of landscaping. Thankfully, the resources for home landscaping design ideas are so numerous; homeowners will have plenty of information at their disposal. Start by providing your home landscaping with as much potential as possible for fall color and beautiful winter scenes, because this never goes out of style. Observe what other owners are doing with their home landscaping designs. Consult with your real estate agent since they see the reactions of potential buyers to home landscaping day in and day out. Talk to your agent about trends and styles. In addition, contact a professional in the landscape design field. If this option is too costly, then try to mine some ideas from your local nursery. These experts are more than happy to assist you.

Landscaping is an affordable way to increase the value of your property. This investment, far from being a merely subjective issue of taste, is an excellent financial tool. By taking care of your property — by respecting appearances and doing some easy tasks — you can stand apart from other sellers in almost any real estate market.

Senior Medicare Patrol (SMP) NYS Medicare Fraud Hotline Number 1-877-678-4697 • What is the Program/Service The SMP programs, also known as Senior Medicare Patrol programs, help Medicare and Medicaid beneficiaries avoid, detect, and prevent health care fraud. In doing so, they not only protect older persons, they also help preserve the integrity of the Medicare and Medicaid programs. Their primary goal is to teach Medicare beneficiaries how to protect their personal identity, identify and report errors on their health care bills and identify deceptive health care practices, such as illegal marketing, providing unnecessary or inappropriate services and charging for services that were never provided. In some cases, SMPs do more than educate: When Medicare and Medicaid beneficiaries are unable to act on their own behalf to address these problems, the SMPs work with family caregivers and others to address the problems, and if necessary, make referrals to outside organizations who are able to intervene. Who is Eligible? Anyone who suspects fraud or abuse can report their concerns/ issues to the SMP hotline.Anyone who is interested in helping others is eligible to become a SMP volunteer. • Is There a Cost? There is no cost to participate in SMP.

By Nassau Veterinary Clinic, PLLC Eeny, Meany, Miney – Whoa! Flea and Tick products so many to choose from… As much as we love the warm weather, with it comes TICKS! We have already been removing them fromour furry friends during their examinations at our clinic. We recommend using tick control year round and if you haven’t been doing this, NOW is the time! To prevent TICK borne disease from infecting your pet: Vaccinate against Lyme disease, use tick control and examine and groom your pet and remove ticks immediately.

Knowing which product is best for yyour dog can be confusing. Here’s a handy chart for you to review the different choices. These products will kill fleas & ticks, some may be quicker, others may have the benefitof being a repellent and some may only need to be replaced twice a year. Talk to your veterinarian and decide what product would work best for you, your lifestyle and your pet.

Word of Mouth By Joseph R. Lapinski, D.D.S. I really needed a break this past winter. Lapinski Dental wasn't scheduled for a vacation until April and that seemed very, very far away. I found myself - like so many of us here - wondering if the winter in the Capital District was ever going away. I mean, it was pretty relentless. Last month, I decided to take advantage of an opportunity for some additional training with one of the most well known Dentists in the country. Conveniently located in the southwest & 90 degrees, it was all the more appealing, even though it was an intensive 3 day training regarding the treatment of complex dental cases. Yes, dentists go to school. As a matter of fact, each dentist in NYS is required by law to have 60 hours of training completed every time they renew their license, equating to 20 hours per year over a 3 year period. It is really amazing how things have changed since I got out of school 20+ years ago. On the surface, dentistry seems like it has been the same for ages, all drilling and filling. However, with technology, micro materials and computerization, that couldn’t be further from the truth. These days, the use of computers and lasers, intra oral cameras, scanners, milling devices and digital xrays are all becoming more common and the standard of care. Many of these are my essential tools in treating my patients with the best materials & the best solutions for them. Going “back to school” is not only refreshing, recharging but it really helps me learn about what is trending and new in the field of dentistry. Although I see a full range of cases in my office: from the very basics of preventative treatment, cleanings, fillings & crowns to replacing missing teeth with prosthetics like implants and dentures. Each case, regardless of the complexity, ultimately needs to provide the patient with a functional and esthetic result. And sometimes, even after all of these years, you can teach an old dog a few new tricks, recharge the batteries and see some of the most current things in a field I love, so I can be even better. I got home from that trip, excited about what I learned, and even more excited that the weather was getting warmer, the snow was gone and the people were smiling again. And if you aren’t, Hey, I can help you with that. If you are having a dental concern, please tell your dentist or hygienist - we cannot help you if we don’t know. www.LapinskiDental.com email: DrJoe@Lapinskidental.com

Unfortunately, many residents and families are reluctant to alert the ombudsman to a problem with their care because they do not want to “rock the boat.” Long-term care residents have a legal right to be safe and comfortable in what has become their temporary or in many cases permanent home. If they are not receiving the care they should—timely assistance with the bathroom, prompt medical attention, proper diet, etc.—they canreport it to the ombudsman for their facility. Ombudsmen are usually able to resolve issues amicably with facility staff, but they will involve the Department of Health if necessary. They are the residents’ advocates. Sometimes the ombudsman can think of a creative solution that makes life easier for everyone. For instance, one wheelchair-bound resident was distressed because her clothes were always falling off the rod in her closet and getting wrinkled and dirty. Staff did not have time to pick the clothes up off the floor. The ombudsman assigned to the facility suggested that the closet rod be lowered so that the resident could reach it easily from her wheelchair. After the maintenance department lowered the rod, the resident was able to keep her own closet tidy and felt much happier. The Long Term Care Ombudsman Program is a federal program administered by the states. The name and contact number for the ombudsman should be posted prominently in the long-term care facility. In Rensselaer County, residents and families can call Linda Martino, Coordinator of the Long Term Care Ombudsman Program, at 518-270-2730. A problem that affects one resident may affect many. Asking the ombudsman to find a solution for yourself or your loved one may make things better for all.

Our Towne Magazine Mother’s Day Contest Winner is...

Barbara Petersen “As Mother's Day approaches, I am reflecting on how truly grateful I am for my mother. She has always been completely supportive of all of my endeavors, but this past year as I worked toward my dream to open a wellness center, she demonstrated that even more than ever. She was by my side from the very start; dreaming, planning, painting, cleaning, gardening, proofreading, welcoming guests with her smile and hot spiced cider. Her energy and enthusiasm matched and I think was even greater than mine at times. My mother's love and pride for her family is enormous and over the years she has showed her support in so many ways including attending countless dance recitals, plays, Odyssey of the Mind events (she even helped me coach a team of teens!) and is the best cheerleader you could ever hope for. She is one of the most generous people I know and volunteers and donates on a regular basis. But when she really shines is when she is performing and one of my very favorite photos of her is one in which she is singing in her chorus. Her face is illuminated and her eyes sparkle with the joy she feels when sharing her talents. My mother is one of the most beautiful person I know both inside and out and I am truly blessed that she is mine.” ~Submitted by Laura Petersen Kavanaugh, Proud Daughter
