The Our Towne Spotlight Shines on... A-Z Landscaping It was almost 20 years ago that local landscape artist Steven Noel started beautifying Our Towne homes, one project at a time. If you have ever hired Steven Noel, he wants to say THANK YOU! Steve began his career with a simple lawn mowing company, when he returned from the U.S. Marine Corps in 2000. By 2003, his reliability & strong work ethic earned him 60 accounts and was mowing nearly 80 acres a week. Now celebrating almost 20 years as owner & operator of A-Z Landscaping, he is grateful for the folks who trusted him with lawn care, plowing and of course what he is now widely known for; beautiful sidewalks, patios, pool areas, outdoor water features, fire pits, outdoor kitchens and whatever else his clients can imagine. A-Z Landscaping promises to increase your homes beauty and value with their “flawless work.” Steven realizes that his version of the “American Dream” was only possible with a strong commitment to excellence and respect for the owners vision. Tired of your deck & want to upgrade to a patio? What about those front steps that are falling apart? Steven is a Hardscaper with a creative & budget-minded approach. He prides himself on listening to the needs and tastes of the customer, and offers various creative ideas to fit their budget. Even the most challenging landscaping & hardscaping projects are welcomed by Steven. He is a detail oriented, creative and reliable professional who is also highly certified & trained.

“Steven turned our backyard into a private oasis! We love our waterfall, landscaping and patio. Our guests have all commented on what a great job he did and it is a work of art! We would highly recommend him to anyone wanting to improve their property.” ~Dean & Orry S. in Castleton

Steven has been trained and certified by VERSA-LOK Retaining Wall Systems, CST Brick Paver Systems and Techo Block Wall & Patio Systems. Due to his certifications and many years of “on the job experience,” he has been able to perfect and achieve very minimal settling and perfectly pitched patios and walkways. Steven works with a small crew that is like a “well-oiled machine.” Hard work & dedication to his craft and company has truly paid off.

Steven does all of his own work and will pay attention to the smallest details There are extensive steps that are to be completed that are very critical when installing patios and walkways. Bigger landscaping companies tend to overlook these steps, or send crew members that may not be properly trained. So, Steven warns the average homeowner of the “Glorified Lawn Mower” who tells you that they can install patios, walkways, and calls themselves a Hardscaper. You will be impressed by the flawless, mind-blowing end product! Let him customize a creative solution for your landscaping and hardscaping challenges! If you are interested in meeting with Steven for a free consultation, call (518) 423-0611 and visit his website: www.azlandscaping.com where you can see just a sample of the workmanship and creativity that A-Z Landscaping has to offer.

“Stevens work has completely changed the appearance of our home. We get compliments all of the time! He replaced our old, concrete walkways with new stone & brick. It is like a gift every day! It has been 5 years and it still looks perfect. We would highly recommend Steven to anyone looking to increase their property value with landscaping or custom creations.” ~Rob & Joan F. in Valatie

Choosing the Perfect Camp

There are more choices for summer camp now than ever before. The nine weeks when school is out can fly by, but only when children are happy at camp. While no one can guarantee a smooth summer, there’s so much we do at the Y to help kids thrive, all season long. Select with your child, not for your child. Kids have strong opinions about where they want to spend their time, and are more than happy to share them! While we can never fulfill their wishes for an endless ice cream and candy camp, we can nurture their love of food in the Greenbush YMCA’s Little Chefs Camp. We can watch them discover the sports they love during Sports Sampler Camp. We can ensure our young explorers have new sights to see during Travel Camp field trips. Make summer camp selection a family activity, and include children in the decision-making process. Take a tour. Let your children see exactly where they’ll be making new friends during the Greenbush YMCA’s Camp Open House Saturday June 22, from 12-2 PM. Camp counselors will be there to say hello & show you and your family around the grounds! Talk with camp staff. We’re always here to answer your questions, before and during camp! Contact Calli at CMoise@cdymca.org. Reach us at the Greenbush YMCA at 518.477.2570. Register online at www.CDYMCA.org/CAMP.

Dear Readers, I hope that by now your are fully enjoying Springtime! We are getting excited to welcome our girl home from her first year away at college in New York City. It will be so wonderful to have everyone under the same roof again. This May issue is packed with so many local events! May is the time to celebrate & honor Mothers and Veterans. I have been extremely blessed to be a mother, and to have a wonderful mother. There are certainly so many kinds of mothers and they all deserve gratitude, love and a sincere thank you; I wish you all happiness & joy. Towards the end of the month we celebrate all of those who bravely fought for our country and freedom. This Memorial Day, please take a minute to say thanks to the Veterans in your community. The East Greenbush Annual Memorial Day Parade is scheduled for Saturday, May 25th, 2019. The parade steps off at 10:00 am at The East Greenbush Bowling Center. As always, organizations from the greater East Greenbush community are invited to participate in the tribute to our fallen veterans. More details can be found on page 12. Our freedom was not free; there was great sacrifice by these men and women and their families. If you are celebrating Memorial Day here at home, another event is The Hudson Berkshire Beverage Trails 7th Annual Wine and Food Festival on May 25th & 26th at the Columbia County Fairgrounds in Chatham. I kick off my summer with this great local event. This unique INTERSTATE event will feature award-winning wineries, distilleries, ciders, farm producers and crafters from the Hudson Valley and the Massachusetts Berkshire Region all together under one roof (Find more information on page 27)! I will be giving away 10 tickets to this event through my Our Towne Magazine Rensco Facebook page this month! Watch the Our Towne Magazine (Rensco) page for your chance to win tickets! Thank you for reading Our Towne and please remember to shop local and support small business.

3 tbsp butter 1 onion, finely chopped 2 stalks celery, finely chopped Sea salt Freshly ground black pepper 1/4 tsp crushed red pepper flakes 1 tsp Old Bay seasoning 2 cloves garlic, minced 2 tbsp. tomato paste 3 tbsp. flour 4 c. fish stock (or low-sodium vegetable broth) 1 c. dry white wine 1 bay leaf 1/2 c. heavy cream 1 lb crab meat Freshly chopped parsley Directions1. In a large, heavy pot over medium heat, heat butter. Add onion and celery and cook until soft, about 5 minutes. Season with salt, pepper, crushed red pepper flakes and Old Bay, then stir in garlic and tomato paste. Cook until garlic is fragrant and tomato paste coats vegetables, about 2 minutes. Sprinkle over flour and cook until absorbed, 1 minute more. 2. Pour in seafood stock and wine, then stir in bay leaf. Reduce heat and let simmer until liquid is reduced and flavors meld, stirring occasionally, 30 minutes. 3. Remove bay leaf and puree soup with an immersion blender on high until very smooth. Return to medium low heat and stir in heavy cream and half of the crab meat. Cook until just warmed through, about 5 minutes. 4. Divide among bowls and garnish with remaining crab meat and parsley before serving.

We are all Number 1… At Something! If you watch or listen to advertising on radio or TV, you are constantly bombarded with variations of the theme, “We’re number 1.” Is it possible that everyone is number 1? Of course not. Every entity that is selling something, be it automobiles, mattresses (and mattress covers!), insurance, or Real Estate can determine something that they are number one at and then broadcast it out to their prospective customers. Some practitioners go to great lengths to figure out what slice of the market they are number 1 at and then make it sound like they are the tops in their entire field. Are any of these claims are ever checked by anyone to insure they are accurate? Probably not. It seems to me that most consumers no longer pay attention to the claim that “we’re #1” because of the dubious claims. 2018 CAPITAL REGION MARKET SHARE BY $ VOLUME 1000 SALES VOLUME IN MILLIONS

The only folks who can truly check on these claims are those who are in the same field and have access to the numbers or results to support the boasts. In the local real estate market, there is a clear and undisputed #1 company in terms of sales volume, units sold, and any other measurable statistic. If you check the graph below you will note that Howard Hanna Real Estate Services is far and away the #1 Real Estate Company in the entire Capital District! Not only are we #1 but we are #1 by a wide margin. These statistics come from the independent real estate trade industry.

Paris, J’taime

By Daryl Bart | dcbart1@gmail.com

Today’s my birthday. To me, the best part about a birthday is making plans for the future. Birthdays are hopeful. That even if things didn’t go exactly as planned in the year that is closing out, I still have this year to make it all better and dream big.

About 10 years later, I traveled to Paris with my mom as a proper tourist. Aka - we had a hotel room and a tour of the Louvre & Notre Dame. That last minute trip to heal a broken heart brought clearly into view a city that is mesmerizing in every nook and cranny, with the culture, the art and the history, a city firmly cemented in my mind as worthy of a silly girls romantic streak. Even when love was forsaking me back in the states, it was all around me in the city of lights.

When Joe asked what I wanted for my 50th birthday, I only had one answer, Paris. He made it happen and my friends came too. 50 was pretty good. It had some downs along with the ups, Getting to see this amazing city together was incredible. After the but the highlight reel was about family. We spent a lot of the Eiffel Tower, the next landmark was of course Notre Dame. We year celebrating Nate’s graduation and going off to college, lingered on the experience by dining at a sidewalk cafe in the family trips and get togethers, and especially our trip to Paris. shadow of the Cathedral, drinking rose wine and eating baguettes. We were mesmerized by the grandeur and the iconic beauty of So, I decided this week, 51 and beyond will be awesome and the stained glass and double towers, and in the heat of the day, we it’s my hope for the future is to make it back to Paris! Exactly strolled the Ile de France, taking photos, visiting the chapel and a year ago today we were there. Then, earlier this week, a lighting candles for those that went before us. stunned world watched, horrified, as the iconic Notre Dame Cathedral went up in flames. I couldn’t believe it. The After seeing the devastation this past week unfold before our eyes, monument, along with the city of Paris, has always played a I sat wondering if it could ever be the same. I’m hopeful that the role in my life and dreams, and seeing that happen made my world will help heal the hole in Paris’ heart. Politics and religion heart break and my breath catch. aside, there are very few places in our world that connect so many people, in the way the landmarks evoke a connecting experience. Back in high school, I took French as my foreign language. I Paris and Notre Dame is a gift to the world and I know, regardless was a romantic and would dream of someday maybe living if the disrupted state of the Cathedral, I’ll find my way back to in Europe. I loved everything French: the food, the perfume, Paris one day. the history, the language, which later extended to clothes, art, wine and style. When I was 13, my parents let me go on the Last weekend, Allison and I were walking around lower Manhattan school trip to Quebec for my birthday, exactly 38 years ago and went through Washington Square Park. The park boasts an today. It was my first international trip. My friends and I Arc the mimics the Arc du Triomphe in Paris. I showed her the pretended we were in Paris by speaking our 8th grade French, photos of us at the real one and she said, “I want to go to Paris one buying matching movie star sunglasses & walking around day!” I knew right then and there that I would make sure that she saying “ooh la la” & dramatically posing for photos. Come to saw the real thing in her lifetime. She might have taken Spanish in think of it, I think we invented the selfie that weekend. high school, but Paris is the language we can all understand. J’taime Paris. After high school, I got my chance to go back for a summer teen travel camp, a gift from my grandfather. The catch was that I had to ride a bicycle the whole way & stay in tents and hostels with a bunch of other teenagers. Say What? Then, I protested the rugged effort of it all, the way only a 16 year old girl can do. I’m pretty sure my parents were happy I’d be Carpentry & remodeling an ocean away, and likely didn’t think the Atlantic was wide enough. Now I wish someone would send me on a trip like Home improvements & Repairs that.

It seems like no trip goes without incident. After a series of mishaps that included a visit to a French hospital, spending all my money on a designer sweater & a few mishaps with the local lack of a drinking age, I embraced being in France, traversing the countryside, eating endless baguettes & smoking even more french cigarettes, all the while keeping my eyes out for a handsome French teenager named Jacques or Francois or Guillaume. Life was good.

Reflections & Revelations By Suzanne St. Germain

Happy Mother’s Day Life takes many twists and turns. What we hope for when we are younger rarely plays out as we expected, even with the greatest of planning. Interesting to me is the idea that the kind of mother we anticipate being before we are blessed with our first child can sometimes be thrown right out the window the minute we are handed these little bundles of joy. I call them a bundle of joy because I am erasing, for the moment, the visions of toddlers and temper tantrums, obstinate tweens and moody teenagers. I am, for this moment, erasing the memories of an almost grown child who is 20 minutes late for curfew. If you are anything like I am, those are the longest 20 minutes of your life because, of course, you will hear sirens and let your mind race to ridiculous conclusions until you finally hear the turn of the doorknob. Nothing helps a mother have a good night’s sleep like having all her children under one roof. There is nothing stricter then the mind of a pre-mom. She has already, most likely, planned out the next eighteen years from bottle feeding (or nursing), T.V. restrictions (or videogames) right down to what tasty morsels of food our kids will be allowed to consume and what activities they will participate in. Then these little angels arrive. It is daunting to be a mother. You are sent home from the hospital with no rule book or hot line per say. We become crazed, sleep-deprived individuals who, on occasion, will look around to make sure no other mother is watching to judge before we pick a pacifier off the ground, “clean” it in our mouths and give it back to a crying baby. These activities, most likely, occur more frequently with each subsequent child. I am confident that all moms feel they have failed their children in some way. Perhaps you feel you yelled to much, didn’t spend enough time with your kids, maybe you feel you weren’t financially able to give them everything possible. Be easy on yourself. Your only job was really to love those you brought into the world and everything you do for them is drawn from this love. As my children grew, I was confident I did not always do everything correctly. I know I made mistakes. However, I am confident I always did what I thought was best for them. I have tried to be a better mother than my mother was capable of being because, after all, we should at least learn from each generation. I hope I have raised men of great character, compassion, ambition and to never take life too seriously. Your success as a parent is not based on a critical review of each day or whether you were your child’s friend. In the long run, they won’t remember the toy you said no to or the soccer game you couldn’t make it to. They will, however, remember they were loved. Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms. You are doing a great job because you are doing your best. And, remember, Mother’s Day is not just for those who gave birth but the aunts, step-parents, grandparents and dedicated teachers in our children’s lives. The requirement to love a child with every fiber of your being is not the ability to carry them for nine months. May you have a large circle of mom love and support not just today but every day.

Dr. Nancy Ann Quimby Dr. Kurt W Relation Wondering what that bump could be on the bottom of your foot? It could be a plantar wart!

Spring Clean-Ups Full Service Lawn Maintenance

Plantar warts, or verruca plantaris, are skin lesions caused by the HPV virus (Human Papilloma Virus). This virus can cause warts to form on many areas of the body, but one of the most common places is on the bottom (plantar aspect) of the foot. They can vary in appearance, sometimes looking like a small callus, other times they can form a large cluster of lesions all grouped together. Often they can appear to have many tiny black dots on the surface of the wart. Pain is common, and it can feel like you are walking on a small rock.

Fully Insured • Family Owned Call 518-322-3296

Warts commonly occur on children, adolescents and the elderly. They often will go away on their own, but can sometimes take a very long time. The goal of treatment is to completely remove the wart. This can be done with various modalities including acid treatments, cryotherapy, oral medications, topical medications or surgery. With warts that do not respond to treatment, your foot and ankle surgeon may recommend a biopsy to rule out other potential causes of the growth. If you or your child has a bump on the bottom of the foot, don’t wait! Call for a consultation and allow our foot and ankle specialists to evaluate the lesion and determine the best treatment option for you!

Word

of

Mouth

By Lapinski Dental

Dear Dr. Lapinski & Dr. Barile: I recently had a toothache and had an abscess. I took an antibiotic and now that tooth feels fine. My dentist says I will need a root canal. Why do I need a root canal if it does not hurt? To answer your question. In your case, the infection is a sign of something else, likely a cracked tooth, a dying nerve or a recurring abscess. A root canal is a way to solve several dental conditions with consistently good outcomes. The antibiotic is more like a band-aid in an immediate sense. Remember, you shouldn’t be getting an infection in the tooth. So the infection is it’s way of telling us that something else is happening there. And while the antibiotic did the job of clearing up the infection now we have to solve the “why” part. It’s my experience that most people don’t even know that they need a root canal, because it hasn’t presented as a painful infection. Tooth decay doesn’t always hurt until it becomes sensitive or hits the nerve and the nerve begins the process of dying. A root canal is then recommended to clean out that dying or dead nerve to prevent infection. Sometimes a simple cracked tooth or lost filling will require the root canal since there is simply not enough tooth exposed to hold onto a filling, saving the tooth and root structure, so the root canal is the best course of action. Root canals have an over 95% success rate, but there are scenarios that are more complicated. Sometimes a tooth has a very large abscess in the bone and even a well done root canal cannot heal the damage the abscess has done to the bone and tooth. There can be curved roots, microscopic canals and even calcified roots. Sometimes, we get in there and find the tooth is fractured vertically. If this happens, there is really nothing we can do to close that fracture and the tooth cannot be saved. The most unfortunate cases I see are when a patient gets a successful root canal but doesn’t get the recommended crown (as a protective covering), because they are finally out of pain and decide to wait. Then the fragile tooth cracks and they lose the tooth after all. We see the need for and treat many root canals each week in our office, but we assess each case and make recommendations based on what is best for the patient. Sometimes we might refer a patient to a specialist for a number of reasons. Specifically, the specialist (endodontist) sees cases, all day, every day and often has the added training and extra equipment to tackle the most complex scenarios. These days, root canals are quicker and more comfortable than they’ve ever been. Advances in the filing systems that we use, plus specialized microscopes, all help the practitioner perform a better root canal. Getting the treatment done can help improve your chances to keep your tooth for a long time - and maybe for the rest of your life. While I have not seen your specific case, so can’t make a total recommendation, but I can say that if I were diagnosed with needing a root canal, I would know the odds of success are in my favor. Keep asking your questions. We are here to help you keep your smile for a lifetime. DrJoe@LapinskiDental.com

Ask the Audiologist By Madison Hearing Center

Q: I have a friend who is a patient at your office, and I have heard you need to have 2 appointments before being fit with hearing aids, why is that? Center, for most patients (Insurance and referral depending) the initial appointment is a diagnostic appointment. The initial appointment determines: if there is hearing loss, if there is a need for additional audiologic testing, or if there is the need Dr. Kate Kawola for a referral to a medical physician like an Ear-Nose and Throat specialist. If hearing loss is found, the type, configuration, and severity will be determined. The audiologist will take time to explain the testing procedures and results to the patient and his or her family. Questions and concerns can be addressed immediately following the diagnosis.

If the patient is determined to be a hearing aid candidate, a Communication Assessment is recommended. At this hourlong second appointment, the patient is brought back into the sound-treated booth for additional testing. Uncomfortable Listening Levels are measured to ensure that when the hearing aids are programmed, they never exceed a level that is uncomfortable for that patient. A speech-in-noise test is completed to determine the amount of difficulty a person has in the presence of background noise. The audiologist will also ask about dexterity concerns, living situations and specific communication environments the patient is in. Hearing aid features that may be of interest- like smart phone compatibility or rechargeability are discussed along with any budget concerns. Gathering this information allows the audiologist to make a hearing aid recommendation that best suits the patient’s needs. There are countless hearing aid options available today, and our staff of audiologists wants to ensure we are not over- or under- recommending the level of technology. Basing a hearing aid recommendation only on diagnostic testing and assumption of lifestyle can lead to dissatisfaction. Our goal is to make sure each recommendation is tailored to the specific needs of each patient, and that his or her quality of life is improved!
