EDITOR’s NOTE Dear Reader, This month’s theme is all about going for your dreams, whether its after graduation or in the middle of your life. Every June millions of American high schools graduate their seniors and send them off into the world to have the next big adventure of their life. Teacher Darren Rosenbaum’s “Letter to a Graduate” gives these young people something to think about. Daryl Bart’s “Growing Pains - Imagine That” offers similar advice for any time in life. We also celebrate Father’s Day in June, which for me is bittersweet because I loved my Dad so much and miss him more than ever at this time of year. It was always a challenge to find the perfect gift for Father’s Day. D E A R G R A D U AT E by Darren Rosenbaum

For someone who’s taught high school seniors for the last 7 years, June is by far my favorite month. Now there are cynics out there who would say it’s because teacher’s have the summer off. But that’s not the reason at all. It’s because high school graduation is a remarkably uplifting experience that opens the door to life. I didn’t always feel this way. Sure, I’m always thrilled that my students pass an important milestone but I clearly remember the struggle I had in 2006 with my first graduating class at Chatham High School. June meant that I’d forever wonder if I’d truly prepared my students for the rigors ahead, whether it was college or the working world. And how would I wrap up a year of teaching Economics and Government? Of course we’d review for the final but what about the most important thing I would say all year… My parting words on the last day of class? In the last few weeks of that school year, I decided I’d share a few things that might impact them in some small way. That realization developed into ‘Rosenbaum’s Three Laws of Life’. I typed up my message to our nation’s future, made class copies and rolled the dice. Here’s what I came up with and still use (with yearly modifications) today:

“I had a very small part in defining who each of you has become but I feel honored to have gotten to know you, if only for a short time. I can tell you without hesitation that each of you is remarkable, not only for what you achieved academically, but for the journey you have completed over the last 12 years. For what it’s worth, I would like to offer some words of advice, a few ‘pearls of wisdom’ from someone who has seen a few things over the years..... Whoever first said ‘Life is short’ should have copyrighted the statement and collected royalties! Hardly a day goes by that millions don’t say it and it’s so true! I am now ‘44’ (adjust yearly) and so glad that I was able to see a good part of the world before reality set in. So apply for a passport and plan a trip somewhere off the beaten path… And I’m not talking about a train ride through an Americanized Europe. Do that when you’re older, grayer and have lots of cash! For now, travel on the cheap to the wilds of Africa, Asia or the Americas and see what life is like for billions around the world. As you absorb what you’ve seen and process your experiences, you’ll better understand why we Americans have ‘won the lottery of life’. See what’s out there and what the world has to offer before you get old and have regrets, which leads to my next thought...... If I’ve learned anything in the 26 years (adjust yearly) since my high school graduation, it’s that life is an adventure and there is so much to experience it would be a pity to let any of it pass you by. So before you waste away growing your ‘Friends’ list, standing in line for the next iPhone, or sitting in front of ‘the tube’ for hours / days / weeks of re-runs or reality show FH LQ V drivel, realize that youth is fleeting and final, and no amount of money can buy G WH D U H HG 2S it back, which leads to my next and final thought..... *,)7 DPLO\ 2ZQ ) George Mallory, famed British high peaks climber who attempted &$5'6 to ascend Mt. Everest twice and died trying in 1924, was once asked $9$,/$%/( ‘Why did you want to climb Mt. Everest’? His often quoted answer.... ‘Because it’s there.’ That about says it all....and in only three ‘bloody good’ WEEKLY words! So, while you will certainly face difficulties in this life, challenge yourself SPECIALS! and accept any challenge the way George Mallory did, with determination and a Large menu including: Subs, Sandwiches, Burgers, Wings, smile on your face. Fried Chicken, Cheese Steaks and This year I’ve tried to instill in all my students that there is a great big messy much much more! world out there, well beyond the confines of Chatham and Columbia County. It should be explored with wonder and amazement, as well as a bit of trepidation. So, enjoy every friendship, every opportunity, and every experience to the fullest because before you know it, reality will set in, possibly disguised as an invitation to your 10 year reunion! Your travel mug is filled to the brim with coffee. Mail and newspaper delivery is on hold. The minivan is packed. Hotel reservations confirmed. You’re ready to hit the road! Are you excited, or dreading hours in the car? Long road trips with whole family in tow can be tough, but they don’t have to be. Here are a few tips to make getting there just as fun as the destination. 1. A little planning goes a long way. Vacations are for getting away from stress. For an easier trip, plan your route, drive time, pit stops and overnight stays ahead of time. Make each leg of your trip a mini goal to make the drive seem shorter. 2. Busy bees are happy bees. Yup, we sure need to keep the kids busy in the car. With today’s technology, that should be easy. Make sure that cell phones, iPods and videos games are charged up. Don’t forget the chargers and extra batteries. For a change, maybe everyone can unplug for a while and ha ve some fun t ogether. Bring along a road atlas so the kids can track your route. The old standbys — I Spy, state license plate game and travel board games are still favorites of mine. You’ll be having fun before you can say “Are we there yet?” 3. Don’t hog the wheel. If you can, bring along more than one driver and take turns. This way, no one will get tuckered out and you’ll reach your daily goal faster. Your newly-licensed teen may benefit from some daylight driving time too. 4. Rest, hydrate, stretch, rest, eat, stretch, rest. Break the highway monotony with pit stops every few hours. Be sure to drink plenty of water to stay hydrated. Get out of the car and str etch your legs to help avoid sore or stiff muscles. Eat healthy snacks to stay energized. 5. Stop. If you’ve got a long way to go but are out of fresh drivers, stop for the night. Don’t risk your safety to get in a few e xtra miles. If you didn’t make your mileage goal today, don’t worry about it. Dear Dr. Lapinski: I’m going to college in the fall and I’ m interested in pursuing a career in the dental field – what ar e my options and what should I study? Jenn, East Greenbush Dear Jennifer: Congratulations. I knew I wanted to be a dentist, so I chose a major in Biology. A scienc e degree isn’t absolutely necessary but it really helped me prepare for the volume & content of the work in dental school and I had most of the pr e-requisites expected from a dental program. To become a Dental P rovider, there are 3 main r outes you can choose: Dental Hygienist, General Dentist, or Dental Specialist. Dental Hygienist. Our ar ea is f ortunate to have a pr ogram at HVCC. It’s very competitive and offers a full time pr ogram that usually is completed in 3 years including prerequisites. One of the best advances for Hygienists in the last f ew years is being able to get certified to administer local anesthesia & nitrous oxide, adding a layer of service to your patients. Dentist: You’ll go to school for a Bachelors Deg ree before attending 4 y ears of Dental S chool. You’ll receive a DDS or a DMD, depending on the school y ou go to but both titles ar e essentially the same. General Dentists (like me) ar e expected to do a 1-year residency after graduating in NYS – although not required in all states. I did a 2- year residency at St. Clare’s Hospital in Schenectady before my private practice, but that is not the most common route. If you want to be a Periodontist (gums, implants), Endodontist (root canals), Prosthodontist (crowns/dentures), Pedodontist (children) or Or thodontist (braces) you’ll complete an additional 2-3 year program before starting to practice. If you want to be an Oral Surgeon (wisdom teeth, implants, trauma) – you’ll complete an additional 6-year surgical program.

Growing Pains - Imagine That

by Daryl Bart When Debbie suggested I try writing something for Our Towne, I was instantly nervous and excited at the same time. We had only met a short time ago, but in our few brief conversations, we covered many topics about life and family, adoption and autism, about business and risks, and charity and community. It was during one of these cha ts that I said out loud tha t someday I wanted to write a book, that is, if I could ever find the time, and the topic and the confidence. It was risky to say. But it was fun testing it out on someone I didn’t know all that well. I’ve kept my secret aspiration rolling around in my brain safe from public scrutiny or comment, for a long time, and saying it, somehow made it more real. I star ted dabbling, taking notes, scribbling ideas on sticky not es and writing essays about topics that usually came t o me while driving t o work. I downloaded inspiring songs and signed up for a class . It wasn’t a novel, but my musings were well received and I was taking baby steps towards my goal. Then something extra-ordinary happened. My eyes started seeing bravery and confidence everywhere…people taking risks and chanc es, everyday in so man y ways. I wasn’t alone on the ledge. It w as astounding and inspiring … I sa w people signing up to 5K’s and half marathons, teenagers preparing planning for life aft er graduation, I saw new businesses opening and people making career changes that make a difference in the lives of neighbors, I saw little girls with stage frigh t dancing in r ecitals, and widowers downsizing their homes and joining bookclubs, One person even jumped out of an airplane to face her fears.

by Dr. David Stone, DVM Today a reader suggested I write about therapy dogs…I told her it was a great idea and that I would think about it. I’m not sure what to think. Doesn’t everyone already know how great therapy dogs are? Doesn’t everyone know the healing power of a dog? And if they don’t, will reading about it compel them to retrain their dog and v olunteer all that time to help some old folks , or sick folks, or lonely folks…or kids? I guess if this ar ticle results in a single “extra” therapy dog in the world it would be a grand victory. My noble goal is very specific and attainable. One of you, gentle readers, is going to sign your dog up for a therapy certification class. You will follow-through with all of the time that training requires. You will volunteer yourself. You will pay for the classes with your money. You will acquaint yourself with the ther apy needs in our community. You will get off of your couch and take the risk to meet new people and people in need. You will be okay with helping someone who needs help. Sometimes the people who need us the most don’t live in wonderful places. They may not have an attractive problem. You have to be there with them. Glimpse their life . Smell their life. You just sit on the chair tha t is in the room that is where this person may live. You just chat while the dog does his thing. The dog needs to be here. Get selfless, suck it up and find the personal blessing. ’m quite sure that by tomorrow ONE of you will call the reception of Bloomingrove to leave a message for me that you’ve signed up. That you are ready to step up and get your awesome dog out of your backyard and into the hearts of others in need. I know who you are. I see your pet every year at least once and I can see the pride in your eyes as your dog behaves beautifully in my office—I know how much you love them and would love to share them. So--let’s get going! Wait. I’m going to need more than ONE of y ou. Unless, that is, you’re THE ONE. Let’s face it, some of you think your dog is perfect for this type of work and they just

aren’t. I’ve seen enough American Idol to know how tough it is to objectively judge someone you love. If your dog is a wacko, don’t go through the anguish of getting all signed up. And don’t call me to ask my opinion—I’m gonna tell you you’re ALL awesome and let the tr ainer break it to you--maybe they’ve matured since I saw them last--maybe I’m confusing them with y our neighbors’ nutty dog and giv e you bad advice. I will take no chances. Just t o be helpful, here’s a down and dir ty quick guide--Attributes Of A Gr eat Therapy Dog: healthy, sound, of even temperament—unflappable. They must be quiet and confident. They must look to you for commands and obey you consistently. They must be calm and peaceful generally but always so upon request. Therapy dogs come in all shapes and siz es but they are usually not very young or very, very old. I suspect that about 5% of the dogs who I see would be able to make the cut of one of the certifying groups like TDI.

Pet Pages I suspect 95% would be less than ideal for this type of work. Speedy math suggests about 500 dogs that come to my practice would be potentials. That’s a lot. If you’ve got one of these amazing dogs, come out from the cave and get involved with the program! For those of you who aren’t sure. Just not sure how your dog fits in the scheme of helpfulness…let’s look at it from another way. Let’s just skim off the bottom 50% and let the certified trainer weed out the rest. DON’T get involved in the Therapy Dog Movement if: your dog bites people/children/ other dogs/anything—NO AGGRESSION OF ANY KIND. Even/especially when provoked. Don’t go through the program if every time he sees a wheelchair, your dog pees on the tire. If your dog dominates strangers by humping them, don’t have him evaluated. You can scratch his name off the list if y ou find yourself saying “oh, don’t worry, he’s just shy”, or, “he doesn’t like his ears t ouched, or his tail”, or, “once he knows you he’ll be okay—don’t move!” If, when you meet a stranger you tell your dog “Off!” or “LEAVE IT!” or “NO BITE!—LET GO!!”--your dog won’t make the cut. No w, dear friends, take a sober look at your beast. Are they therapy material? Are you therapy material? Do you both NEED therapy? Get to googling and sign yourself up for a certification class/evaluation. And don’t be mad if your dog gets cut from the program. Be of good temper. Final note: Focus here is the need for, and backyard availability of, potentially great therapy dogs. While important, therapy dogs make up a small pool in a much lar ger ocean of service dogs. Dogs are everywhere from Search and Rescue to Military to Law Enforcement to Fire to Blind Assistance to Research—to--to…no other animal is as

DAD by Debbie Gaylord Dear Dad, The other day Shainna asked, “What was Poppy like”? She nev er met you but I want t o share all the memories so I pull them out of m y heart where they are safely kept for moments like this. I t old her everything I could remember. You were very strong and looked y oung for your age because your hair never grayed and your face remained youthful, and you had this incredible zest for life. Remember how you loved to play those games at the Chatham Fair or Riverside where they would guess your age and weight? You always fooled them. As a kid, you taught me about having fun, whether it was playing baseball and kickball in our back yard, dancing the polka at big family weddings or just belly-laughing - having a Dad & Mom at my wedding good time was your expertise. You always seemed to be at the center of everything. At picnics, you were the one who played in the pool with all the kids, led the whirl pool or threw us in the air so high we could flip into the water. Whenever I was sad you would say something funny to make me laugh and if that didn’t work you would tickle me until a smile appeared. When we went to basketball games on Friday nights, football games on Saturday, or the strawberry festival - everyone knew you. Your light was bright so I could just come stand by you and feel special being your daughter. Even though you are gone now, I feel happy when I picture you - my hero - smiling, swinging the fat bat, running the bases, dancing… waving three times at the airport the last time I saw your face. I am so thankful you were my Dad. Oh, and Happy Father’s Day.
