The Our Towne Spotlight Shines On...

FUNPLEX

Scott Commander purchased FunPlex & Lickety Split in 2000. He is celebrating his 16th year as owner & operator of the place where Our Towne goes to have some outdoor fun. FunPlex has been the place to take the family for fun for over 25 years. When he purchased it, he decided to take it to a whole new level of entertainment for kids (at heart) from 2-102 years young! Originally, it was geared towards older kids and teens. Now, with 14 attractions for the younger children, everyone can unplug and relax in the outdoors with fun filled activities from miniature golf to go kart racing. I couldn't help but wonder how does someone come to own such a venue? What kind of background and experience gave him the confidence, and interest, to own such a business? Scott's family was friends with the previous owner and says that he was basically in "the right place, at the right time." Prior to this opportunity presenting itself, Scott had graduated from college in 1994, and started a Go-Kart track out in Buffalo, and then at Lebanon Valley.

He then bought trailers, trucks and go karts and hit the road, traveling around the east coast for 8-10 months out of the year. He traveled with his go-karts to state fairs up and down the east coast. After many years of traveling, he was ready to settle down and live out of a permanent home, rather than a camper. Having run his own business in the amusement industry, he was capable and ready to expand. Once he heard that FunPlex was for sale, he knew that he could be successful, happy, and have a more stable lifestyle. Lickety Split, originally a Carvel back in the 1950's, was part of the package. It's fun when grandparents bring their grandchildren to the place where they used to go on dates. A nice part of our local history, you could say. So, for all of the kids and teens of enjoying ice cream with your friends and dates, know that your grandparents probably did the same thing at the same place. Expanding the business to 14 attractions has taken years of hard work and dedication. He credits the staff and his assistants with the success. During peak season, FunPlex employs between 40-50 local teenagers & adults. The Boat House Grill, now in the fourth season, serves burgers, hotdogs, fries, chicken sandwiches, fish fry, wraps, homemade side salads and meat sauce for the hotdogs. Good quality food! Even Hoffman's Hotdogs are imported from Syracuse. This summer, your family can stop for lunch or dinner at The Boat House Grill, enjoy some family fun outside at FunPlex and finish up with ice cream at Lickety Spilit. It is a perfect way to spend a beautiful day or evening. You can also book a fun burthday party and they will do all of the work! Don't forget to LIKE FunPlex on Facebook, for weekly specials & promotions.

Viva La France, Ooh La La Daryl Bart• dcbart1@gmail.com

My daughter’s been contemplating which foreign language to take next year. She’s been taking a blended class to get a taste of both French & Spanish to see which one is right for her. I took French. When I was about her age, I went on my first international trip with theFrench club trip to Quebec & Montreal. Besides our hotel room being broken into & our bus being detained at the border, it went like most school trips go. The best part for me, was that was where I met my current BFF. She was in 7th grade, I was in 8th. We bonded by loudly singing Broadway show tunes on the bus & pulling silly pranks like applying makeup to our sleeping male chaperone. We bought matching movie star sunglasses & walked around saying “ooh la la” & dramatically posing for photos. Come to think of it, I think we invented the selfie that weekend. I continued to take French thru high school. I pictured myself studying abroad and living in Paris, sitting in cafes all day and sipping espresso. had a vivid imagination for sure. Although as I edit this from Starbucks, I realize that although I’m a long way from the Champs Elysees, I’m oddly close to that vision. Back then, My grandfather gave me a very generous high school graduation gift, a 6 week trip to Europe. The only catch was that I had to ride a bicycle the whole way & stay in tents. Say What? My incessant objections to get a refund went unanswered, right up until the day they waved goodbye at JFK. It seems like no trip I go on is without incident, that must be the writer in me looking for a good story. After a series of mishaps that included a visit to the hospital (long story I may have told you already), spending all my money on a designer sweater I “had” to have,& a few mishaps with the local drinking age or lack there of, I embraced being in France, traversing the countryside, eating “jambon et fromage.” (ham & cheese) all day every day (in quiche, on sandwiches & pizza), smoking french cigarettes (don’t tell my mom) and keeping my eyes out for a handsome french teenager named Jacques or Francois or Guillaume. I wasn’t picky. Life was good.

But the ultimate glory and redemption came one day when another girl on the trip needed to take a train to our next stop because of a leg injury. I willingly volunteered to be her companion, broke out my glamorous movie star sunglasses (yup, had them with me) & we luxuriated as we sped our way to the south of France. Not too Shabby. We arrived at the station a few kilometers from the designated camping spot on our itinerary and decided to call the campground using the pay phone on the wall of the train station (gasp) to check in with the group. Thanks to my 6 years of high school French, I ascertained that my group had not yet arrived, did not have a reservation and if we didn't act fast, 15 Americans would be sleeping in someone’s cow pasture or on the side of the road. Somehow I managed to reserve two campsites and assured them we would be there “tres rapide” Upon arrival, we were met by our cheering friends, thrilled that we saved the day. I was pretty happy with the accolades and still a little astonished that I could have a successful conversation in broken high school french. I guess Madame Landsberg would have been proud. I haven't needed any French in a long, long time. Out of my own nostalgia, and knowing that my daughter loves some good drama, I was sure she’d choose French. Alas, she’s practical, and felt that Spanish would be more suitable for something that could help her in later life. So I guess she’ll be saying “Hola!” That’s OK. I’m pretty sure I’ll find my way back to Paris one day (hint hint honey). Until then, I’m the one in those big sunglasses at the Rte 4 Starbucks, avoiding the croissant & sipping the skinny latte. Ooh La la!

St. Onge Landscaping Landscape Design & Construction "We Make Your Dreams Grow!" In 1985, while studying business at Siena college, Aaron St. Onge started mowing lawns & building decks in the summers to make extra money. Little did he know that his business would grow into a successful career spanning 30 years. He is a local guy who graduated from Columbia HS and has always worked in some way since he was 11. Talk about local roots & stability! Aaron has had the same phone number for 30 years and has lived in the same town of North Greenbush all his life. He is extremely hard working, artistic, creative and a great listener. He is traditional and quite simple in how he runs St. Onge Landscaping & Design: talk with the customer, meet face to face and continue to communicate through the process. He would rather discuss project ideas and challenges with you verbally or face to face. St. Onge Landscaping: Landscape Design & Construction offers the entire spectrum of home improvement. From creating custom outdoor patios, custom living space, outdoor kitchens, and grills, retaining walls, custom stone work, brick pavers and much more. St Onge Landscaping & Construction also will excavate your property, remove trees and provide drainage solutions. During the warm months, he is looking to design & create outdoor solutions to improve your home's beauty and function. This photo, to the right, is a stone & brick pool house with a custom fireplace & outdoor kitchen.

The pictures in his ad (inside front cover) give you a sense that he can build almost anything. Check out more of his completed projects on his website: www.stongelandscaping.com. Aaron is currently seeking new clients who are ready to make a change to their environment & increase their homes value. Call Aaron at 518283-4013 or 518-461-3227 for a free consultation today.

Quality acupuncture care, at a price you can afford! $20-$50 Acupuncture is simple and powerful, it is effective for many conditions including:

New patients often come to my clinic because they are suffering from acute or chronic pain. This may include migraine headaches, back pain, knee pain, ankle pain, and every other type of pain you can imagine. Many of them experience a reduction in pain during their very first treatment. While the exact mechanism for how acupuncture treats pain is unknown, it has been shown to regulate the nervous, circulatory and endocrine systems simultaneously. This means that it releases painreducing endorphins, and interrupts the nervous system pain signal from the area that hurts, for immediate relief. At the same time, it improves the circulation of blood into the area to help it heal.

Dear Our Towne Readers, As we enter June it is a time to enjoy the great outdoors and refresh our inner spirit as we are surrounded by green grass, flowers and leaves on the trees. It will be a very busy month for homes with children, and maybe a little stressful for those who are leaving school and graduating into the real world. Ending the school year, and maybe a career as a student, is certainly exciting, but often not without butterflies and anxiety of what the next chapter brings. I congratulate all of those graduating from high school and college. After all of your hard work, you can now enter a new and exciting time in your life. A fresh start. A time to focus and put your best foot forward. You can’t move forward if you don’t take risks; you can’t fail or succeed unless you try. My first job out of college was doing menial tasks that certainly did not require my $100,000 four year, private college education. Barely making $20,000 and $50,000 in college loan debt, I was grateful to be employed at a professional company. Was it the job I wanted? NO! I had a BS in Business Management with a double minor in Marketing and Psychology, and I was making copies, sending faxes and filing for more important people (many of whom did not go to college.) What did I get out of that job? Well, I stayed for a year (to build up my resume’), gained valuable experience and knowledge about what it was to work in “corporate America,” met my wonderful husband and decided to go back to school and get my Master’s in Education. There is always something to learn about that first job. Especially when it seems beneath you. Everyone has to start someplace. What did I learn? How to prove myself and show my motivation to succeed and desire to move up the ladder, how to stay positive despite having a nasty and unappreciative manager. This taught me more about the world of work, personal work & management styles, interpersonal skills, business etiquette, how you can’t always trust your co-workers, and that what you do for a job does not define you as a person. I could go on and on. Just have patience and be willing to start at the bottom and learn from those around you. Good or bad, there is always something to learn from a situation. Don’t give up, take risks, be true to yourself and stay ethical. You have to live with your decisions and getting ahead at any price never pays in the end. It’s a small world and believe me, you never know who you may see (again) in life at your next job. Also, June is a time to celebrate the Fathers in our lives. Those men who have loved and supported us. I am so very grateful to have a wonderful father and even more blessed to have a deeply devoted, loving and attentive father for my girls.

8th Annual Run for Help The Family and Friends of The Liza Ellen Warner Association, Inc. along with the Nikki Hart Children’s Memorial Fund are holding the eighth annual “Run for Help.” The Walk/Race, held to bring attention to the crime of domestic violence, will take place at the Goff Middle School, Gilligan Road, East Greenbush on Sunday morning, June 7th 2015. This is a 5K event which will benefit The Unity House Domestic Violence Program and The Nikki Hart Childrens’ Memorial Trust Fund. Liza Ellen Warner and Nikki L. Hart, both of whom were born, raised and educated in the Town of East Greenbush were victims of domestic homicide, Liza murdered by her husband of five years in her home and Nikki murdered by her boyfriend in her own home with her young daughters present. At 9:30AM a youth mile will be held; 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place finishes in both the girls and boys categories will each receive a medal. Also at that time a kids’ 50 yard dash will take place; each child in the dash will receive a medal. The 5K race/walk will begin at 10AM. AREEP is again the timekeeper for this year’s race and Meaghan Hart will organize the run. 250 runners took part in this most successful event last year. Walkers and runners can register for this event on line at ZippyReg.com. Auctions, raffles, and other fun activities will be taking place. All runners and the public are encouraged to attend not only to enjoy the day but to make a statement against domestic violence in our neighborhoods and homes. Ask the Audiologist By Madison Hearing Center

Q

uestion: I have ringing in my ears, sometimes it is worse than others, is there anything to make it stop?

Answer:

Dr. Kate Kawola

Ringing in the ears, or tinnitus, is a very common symptom experienced by our patients. Currently, there is no known cause, or cure for tinnitus. In many cases, tinnitus is accompanied by high frequency (pitch) hearing loss. There is a widely accepted theory that suggests the brain, or central nervous system, creates the ringing to fill a void caused by the hearing loss. Very often, when a patient is fit with hearing aids, there is a reduction in the perception of tinnitus. This reduction occurs because the hearing aids provide the brain with stimulation in the high pitches. Many hearing aids also have tinnitus therapy programs built in. These programs can be accessed by your audiologist, if it is deemed appropriate. Research is being conducted in an effort to determine the cause of tinnitus, which will hopefully provide the answers for a cure. •Diagnostic Testing •Assistive Devices •Digital Technology

Once in a while I hear from Our Towne Readers about a feature story... As a publisher, I am always touched when readers take the time out of their busy lives to give me positive feedback & compliments on Our Towne Magazine and those who advertise. Read on to see one couples experience with AZ Landscaping. By Jennifer Felts Dear Jen, My husband and I wanted to take a moment to thank you for the write-up on A-Z Landscaping earlier this spring. We had been looking to have a new walkway installed in front of our house. Over the last year, we had met with several local businesses for both interviewing purposes as well as getting quotes. Although I cannot say we had any negative experiences during that process, there wasn't anyone that jumped out at us either. After reading the article in The Our Towne magazine "spotlighting" on A-Z, we decided to give Steven a call. I can honestly say, we were happy with A-Z right from the initial phone contact!! My call was returned promptly and Steven was excited and eager to meet with us! He arrived promptly for the initial visit and for each visit thereafter. We discussed the walkway and he listened very intently to our needs; including our likes and dislikes. We looked through his portfolio and he directed our attention to certain features within the book. Within a few minutes, he had drawn up a proposal and we loved it immediately (and it was the first drawing which is very unusual for me as I am very particular)! In fact, we liked his work so much that we inquired further about redoing our landscape which we had intended to do ourselves!! Steven gave us a lot of information and ideas to think about! We broke after our initial meeting and Steven said he would follow-up with us over the next week. My husband and I had very little to discuss as we both truly felt very comfortable with Steven and A-Z Landscaping. For us, it was a done deal! True to his word, Steven actually DID follow-up with us over the next week. In our experience, especially during their busy season, it can be difficult to get a return phone call regarding estimates or any other type of work...but that certainly was not the case with Steven! We were happy to give the work to A-Z for a number of reasons. While they were not necessarily the least expensive, the price was fair. Although our budget was small, Steven found a way to envision something fabulous while staying within that budget. More importantly, Steven listened and was very good about managing our expectations! We felt he was honest and trustworthy and he instilled a sense of confidence within us! He had creative ideas yet he accepted input and feedback from us often incorporating them into his design ideas. He did lots of little extras for us, including offering suggestions and insight regarding other areas around our home. His attention to detail was fantastic and when he says it....he means it! Steven knows what he is talking about...but he says it with confidence not arrogance! In the end, we hired him to do the sidewalk as well as the landscaping and we couldn't be happier! The picture that I had created in my head, based upon my conversations with Steven, suddenly became a reality! Our home looks so different as it is much brighter, cleaner and completely refreshed. All of our visitors comment on the amazing before and after look. What a difference Steven's work has made on our home's entrance. We are truly happy with the work done by A-Z Landscaping. Thanks so much for spotlighting such a great local company! We are certainly more than pleased with our results. I have been and will continue to recommend Steven's work to anybody who will listen! Feel free to stop and and see for yourself the end result of Steven's creative vision for our home! Regards, Jessica and Chris Hall, 3587 US 20, Nassau, New York 12123

Avoid These 8 Staging Mistakes by Cathy Graziano You may love your home, but that does not mean that everyone coming through the door will feel the same way. What may be “charming” to the seller may seem off-putting to a prospective buyer. Many sellers attempt to stage their home themselves and, in doing so, create mistakes that can actually sidetrack the sale of their homes.

Here are some of the biggest staging mistakes, according to professional home stagers:

1. Getting too personal: Home staging is meant to create a neutral canvas that will appeal to the majority of buyers. Staging is all about de-personalizing the space, and creating more of a luxury hotel or a model home look that will appeal to most everyone. This is not the time to bring in your unique style and create a look that appeals to just you. 2. Using dark colors: If painting, you should choose a nice, neutral and warm color, such as beige tones, grey tones, or light blue or pale greens. You will be amazed at the transformation a few coats of fresh paint will make on your home. 3. Not taking advantage of natural light: People love natural light, so blocking off any light with heavy curtains or furniture can hurt your sale, especially if the home has attractive views. Anything dated in a home is a turn-off to a potential buyer and window treatments are one of them. 4. Thinking more is better: Scale down your furniture. The size of the furniture needs to be in balance with the scale of the room and the other furniture in it. Remember that the purpose of furniture when selling a home is to define the purpose of the room and to show what will fit where. It is not meant to show that you can provide seating for 15 in your living room and every seat has a side table to rest drinks on. 5. Leaving pets at home: You need to remove all traces of animals from the house and make sure “Fido” or “Sunshine” is away during showings. Having a pet could kill a sale before someone even steps into a house. 6. Neglecting the outside: People care about the outside space just as much as the inside, so add flowers, make sure the lawn is mowed, the yard is tidy and add a few backyard accessories for the kids. 7. Only dealing with “main” rooms: People are quick to stage living rooms, kitchens and bedrooms, but don’t forget to spruce up the garage, basement and closets as well. 8. Forgetting fixtures: When staging a home, it is important to ensure all lights are burning with fresh bulbs, and that all fixtures are working. Remember, staging a home means highlighting the property’s many features, not concealing its flaws. Make sure your house is in good condition and use staging to cast the home in the best light. Our Towne Highlights Fantastic Sams Locally Owned & Operated

Debra Penesso began her career at Fantastic Sams in 1990 as a salon manager. As a hair stylist and manager, she jumped at the opportunity to purchase the salon 17 years ago when the owner was ready to move on. As a resident of East Greenbush, she was thrilled to own the organization that she managed. He husband Joe is “her greatest supporter”and encouraged her to become a small business owner. A few years later, the Fantastic Sams on Hoosick Street in Brunswick became available, and she was happy & ready to grow her business. Debra is known in the industry as a technical salon owner. She continues to work with clients and exercise her creative abilities. At the same time, she is able to manage the business. Debra is a very creative person, who has a mind for business and an ability to work with the public and her staff. As a salon owner, Deb says that the biggest challenge for her is that it is "hard to get hair stylists who have good customer service skills, good work ethic and those who have current skills for the industry." Continuing education and skill classes are mandatory for all Fantastic Sams employees. The company has their own educator who provides salons with a monthly calendar of continuing education classes. Stylists attend a minimum of 4 classes a year to stay current, along with attending hair shows and conventions. Most stylists attend many more of the free classes to expand their skills and learn new techniques. Debra notes that "In this field, it is very important to stay up on the current trends in the industry, so I will bring staff to hair shows and conventions. Most recently, we were in Las Vegas & Chicago.”

The employees are compensated with a base hourly rate, plus a bonus & commission. Full time staff receive health insurance as well as retirement. Not very many salons offer such great benefits. As I was speaking with Debra, I thought that this sounds like a great company to work for. One of Debra's greatest feelings of accomplishment is when she hires a new stylist who has little experience and can mentor them; help them grow and become confident and successful in front of her eyes. She has many stylists who have been with her for years and is always looking to hire those who have a good work ethic, ability to work with the public and the interest to grow their skills and stay current with trends and changes in the industry. Fantastic Sams is a walk in full-service family hair salon that offers a full range of services. From cuts, color, perms, waxing and styling for special occasions. Their goal is to offer you the highest level of service and products. They offer a popular line of products and, most of all, are affordable. Their main goal is to have you "leave looking and feeling great about yourself." If you sign up for the Fantastic Sams Loyality/Rewards program, you also receive coupons. Of course, you can also find great coupons in Our Towne Magazine each month. So, next time you want to walk in and get a cut, color, waxing or style, know that Fantastic Sams is ready to serve you. Open 7 days a week, Monday-Friday from 9-8, Saturday from 9-5 and Sunday from 10-3. At Fantastic Sams, you are "shopping local” and supporting a small business and local woman who lives in the community.

10 EASY WAYS TO KEEP YOUR PET HEALTHY

1.Get a check-up. Humans visit the doctor for routine health checks and so should pets. During routine exams, veterinarians try to make sure there are no hidden diseases or early signs of health problems. 2.Vaccinate regularly, including boosters. It can confusing keeping up with the puppy or kitten vaccination schedule, but it’s essential. Vaccinations protect your pet safe from contagious diseases. It’s especially important for puppies and kittens. After weaning, they rapidly lose the immunities passed on from their mothers. Boosters aren’t optional; they’re just as critical as the initial vaccination. Without the booster, your pet is not fully protected. 3.Routine fecal exams. It sounds gross, but it’s essential to the health of your pet and family! Some parasites are passed on from the mother to the puppy or kitten. For example, roundworms in dogs are passed from the mother to fetal puppies, and in cats, they are passed during nursing. Common internal parasites include roundworms, hookworms, whipworms, tapeworms and giardia. 4.Have regular blood work performed. Routine blood tests are used to detect underlying and hidden medical problems. The blood work helps the veterinarian assess your pet’s internal organs and make sure everything is functioning properly. Pets can be masters at hiding pain, and often, by the time the pet is showing signs of discomfort, the disease may be well advanced. 5.Grooming is more than looking pretty. Keeping a dog’s or cat’s coat combed is a great way to examine your pet. If you regularly brush your pet, you’re more likely to notice an abnormal lump or festering sore. Long nails are painful for your pet. Bring your pet to the vet if you cannot safely groom it at home. 6.Say no to litters. There are many benefits to spaying or neutering your pet and the obvious one is not producing unwanted puppies and kittens. There is no truth that intact pets have a better temperament or that spaying/neutering causes obesity. Pet weight gain comes from overfeeding. 7.Identification is a must. Microchip your pet. Even if your pet is a strictly indoor dog or cat, accidents happen. No one plans to lose a pet. A microchip might be the difference between getting your pet

back or losing them forever. 8.If you have a dog, take several obedience classes. Classes are designed to not only help you train your pet to be polite, but they’re also providing critical socialization opportunities – not to mention, they’re lots of fun, too! 9.Don’t leave your dog in the car while you’re shopping. Within 10 minutes, the temperature inside a car can increase by 20 degrees. Cracking the window open isn’t enough. On 70 degree day within a short time the temperature in your car can easily rise to a lethal 100 degrees or more.

Word of Mouth By Joseph R. Lapinski, D.D.S. Dear Dr. Lapinski: My friend said she knew someone that watched a Youtube video about doing her own orthodontic treatment – I was wondering what your thoughts are on this? Is it dangerous? WOW! This is a new one for me. I didn’t realize that there were videos out there showing how to be your own dentist. Before you go google it, make sure you have a lot of time and your food is digested. Dentistry can be, ahem, not pretty. I did my own “research” & it’s true. There are endless video how-tos: for extractions, fillings & even rubberband orthodontics. Well, it’s no surprise that I believe that if you don’t know what your’re doing, watching a 10 minute video will not qualify you to do your own dental treatment. That is not to say that some of these “quick fix” remedies couldn’t help in a true temporary emergency, but I was horrified at some of the ones I saw. People were using chemicals in their mouth, common garage tools and sharp objects. This risky behavior could cause major problems too, including infection, gum recession, extrusion of teeth and possible tooth and bone loss. In my own experience, we saw incredible things while in dental school. There was a trend in urban Baltimore for folks to buy and glue/affix gold or dazzled “Grilles” to their teeth, those metal hardware worn across the front teeth made popular by rappers. We’d see these patients once the teeth rotted away underneath the grille & those teeth needed to be extracted. We helped folks that used crazy glue on their broken teeth, or those that had infections and abscesses from trying to pull teeth that didn’t stop bleeding or left pieces behind, or even filled cavities or root canal teeth with temporary hardware store epoxy & grout – leaving the tooth with exposed decay to rot until extraction was the only option. So, no, I don’t think wrapping rubberbands around your teeth is a good idea, and I don’t think taking a nail file to your sharp or broken tooth is a good idea & I certainly don’t think scraping your teeth with a metal pick to remove tartar & plaque is a good idea. Yes, teeth are strong. Yes, enamel is the hardest substance in your body. No, people do NOT have soft teeth…it’s habits that soften the teeth. But taking care of your precious teeth is important. If you must “do it yourself” make sure to floss every day, brush at least twice a day for 2 minutes and use a rinse. Caveat Emptor. Let the Buyer Beware. Leave the treatment to the professionals and play it safe. It’s not always worth the risk and I can’t tell you how sad it is for us to see patients lose their teeth – when they were intended to last a lifetime
