The Our Towne Spotlight Shines on...
Local landscape artist Steven Noel has been beautifying Our Towne homes one project at a time for the past 18 years. As Steven reflects on his career and small business growth, he is most grateful for the customers who have trusted him with their outdoor improvement dreams. As the years go on, he receives the most humbling gifts from those customers; referrals to their friends and families. As any small business owner knows, a happy customers recommendation is priceless. If you are looking for a landscaper or hardscaper (patios, stone work, sidewalks, retaining walls, water features), to enhance your home, look no further! A-Z Landscaping promises to increase your homes beauty and value with their “flawless work.” Want to know more about this entrepreneurs story? Read on… Shortly after returning home from the United States Marine Corps. in 2000, A-Z Landscaping was established by Steven Noel. This motivated man, with his walk behind lawn mower & snowmobile trailer, quickly gained a collection of loyal customers. By 2003, his reliability & strong work ethic earned him 60 accounts and he was mowing nearly 80 acres a week. Burned out and bored from the repetition of mowing, Steven decided he needed a change that would allow him to be more creative. In 2004, it was time for that change. The mowing business was sold & new trucks and equipment were purchased. It was time to chase his dream.

A-Z Landscaping
Tired of your deck & want to upgrade to a patio? What about those front steps that are falling apart? Steven is a Hardscaper with a creative & budget-minded approach. He prides himself on listening to the needs and tastes of the customer and offers various creative ideas to fit their budget. Even the most challenging landscaping & hardscaping projects are welcomed by Steven. He is a detail oriented, creative and reliable professional who is also highly certified & trained. Steven is also fully insured and has many references. He wants to warn consumers to never hire anyone to improve your home, in any way, if they don’t have insurance. This is for your protection and peace of mind. Steven has been trained and certified by VERSA-LOK Retaining Wall Systems, CST Brick Paver Systems and Techo Block Wall & Patio Systems. Due to his certifications and many years of “on the job experience,” he has been able to perfect and achieve very minimal settling and perfectly pitched patios and walkways. Last year, Steven was asked to create the display area at Grimm Building Materials in Green Island. You can see the CST products as well as an example of his work. Your patio & walkway should look brand new for MANY years to come, if installed by a professional such as Steven.
This is another example of the “American Dream.” I love these stories...For the last 14 years Steven has been full steam ahead beautifying & creating unbelievable landscapes & water features in our community with A-Z Landscaping. Steven works with a small crew that is like a “well-oiled machine.” There are extensive steps to be completed that are very critical when installing patios and walkways. Bigger landscaping companies tend to overlook these steps, or send crew members that may not be properly trained. So, Steven warns the average homeowner of the “Glorified Lawn Mower” who tells you that they can install patios, walkways, and calls themselves a Hardscaper. A-Z Landscaping GUARANTEES that you get the highest quality job possible within your budget.
Hard work & dedication to his craft and company has truly paid off. Steven does all of his own work and will pay attention to the smallest details. A-Z Landscaping is yet another example of an Our Towne small business that is finding success in our community. Let him customize a creative solution for your landscaping and hardscaping challenges! If you are interested in meeting with Steven for a free consultation, call (518) 423-0611 and visit his website: www. azlandscaping.com where you can see just a sample of the workmanship and creativity that A-Z Landscaping has to offer.
I hired A-Z Landscaping to design & install a new outdoor living area in my backyard in June of 2016. I’ve known Steve Noel for over 25 years, watched him build his business & was excited to see what he would create for my yard. He brought drawings to show me, from two perspectives, with all plants, boulders, walkways & patio, all hand-sketched. He was so excited just talking about the project & what he could produce; how could I not get excited, too? Even though I thought I could envision the final product, I was totally amazed every day. Each step was a work of artistry. Just watching Steve & his two guys build the rock wall, the placing of boulders in their perfect locations, the landscaping chosen that made everything come together & create a sense of privacy for me. It’s gorgeous beyond words! It was a pleasure to work with A-Z Landscaping. I hope to continue landscaping my property next year & would not hesitate to hire Steve! I’m one happy customer! I found a penny the other day in a parking lot.
The same services as the big companies at a fraction of the price.
I picked it up and smiled, thinking Today is going to be a lucky day! Then I took a picture of it. Posted it on facebook and made a wish. I don’t know about you, but my whole day can be made from simply finding a crumpled bill in the laundry, even though I know that money was probably mine in the first place. (House rule, If I find it its mine anyway) There is the luck turned lesson incidents. Like that time in NYC when I had a $20 bill in my pocket to pay for a bus ticket to see my dad for the weekend. I thought I’d try my hand playing a simple game of 3 card Monty, after correctly predicting the right cup a few times in a row. Short version of the story: I bet my $, picked the wrong shell, lost. In hindsight, I can say that I was super lucky. It was before cell phones and ATM’s, my mom worked a few blocks away, and even though she knew there was more to my shady story, she replaced my bus fare. I was reminded of this incident in Paris last month, while celebrating my 50th (yes it has passed and I survived). Walking by the Eiffel Tower I saw the men with the classic set up, 3 cups on an overturned box, letting the onlookers think they could choose the winner. I could have told them that they should go get a crepe instead. There was also the time when I was flat broke in college, and dreaming of a lucky break. That day in the library, I found an unmarked envelope of money. I know now, that this was likely some other college students rent, but at the time it was literally my lucky day. I struggled with what to do, but reasoned that turning in an unmarked envelope to other questionable teens would likely ensure it never found its rightful owner, so I simply made the inevitable happen sooner, and lived with the consequences. That karma came full circle recently on a solo trip to Florida. When I reached my destination I realized I lost my wallet somewhere between the plane and the Uber. Thankfully the wallet was recovered, albeit without the cash, but my identification and credit cards were there and boy did I feel lucky that I could get home to NY without much hassle, confident my college karma debt was now paid (2 times over).

These days I can’t get out of Target or TJMaxx without considering a new coffee mug or t shit with positivity imprinted proclaiming that luck is ours to make, or some version of that message. My new favorite mantra, which is likely an old mantra reworded, is that “the harder you work for it the luckier you get” I believe this more now than ever. As I send my kids off into the world with all the influence and common sense I can instill, peppering them with concepts like You won’t get the job if you don’t apply for it. You won’t make the team that you you don’t try out for. You miss all the chances/shots/opportunities you don’t take. It always throw in If you see a penny pick it up, all day long you’ll have good luck. It can’t hurt, right? So Nathan called me from the store while running an errand. He says “Mom, I found $10 on the ground and I’m not sure what to do. There isn’t anyone here, and I’m not sure if I should give it to the kid at the counter.” I said, I’m proud of you for calling, I’d probably keep it and try to do something nice for someone tomorrow. I realized we keep going in circles, learning lessons, making mistakes and finding our own luck. Clearly I have to keep working at it, but I’ll keep looking for those pennies and cleaning out the lint trap, just in case.

May 2018
Dear Our Towne Readers, Last month when I was writing my note to you, it was still snowing. I believe it was during one of the last storms in late March. What a long winter. Today, I am happy to say that the “tide is turning.” Finally, it has started to feel, and look, more like spring! Unfortunately, I have been tortured by the sunshine and sounds of spring, from my office. The days leading up to publishing my beloved magazine are usually 13-15 hours long... It’s just not as painful when it’s raining, snowing or freezing outside. My editorial is the last piece of the Our Towne puzzle. I don’t plan ahead what I will write to you; I am just sharing my current thoughts on life and the magazine I just created. I am really excited to welcome many new local businesses and writers to the Our Towne family. This May issue is packed with events, articles and of course many local businesses that have products and services for you this month. If maintaining your property is difficult for you, and stresses you out, this issue has many local businesses that can help! These professionals are happy to mow, mulch & maintain your property for you, so that you have more time to relax and enjoy life. There is nothing like spending time outside to spark the creative and functional ideas for your home and property. Mother’s Day is May 13th. I feel very blessed to be a Mom and have a wonderful Mom who has always been there for me and my family. It sounds cliche’ but both of those facts have shaped my life, and for that I am grateful. I do feel so lucky to have the title of Mom. Please take time to thank that person in your life who has been a Mom to you. It may not be the woman who brought you into this world. A Mother is the person who has loved, supported and guided you through the good times and bad. The person who has given you strength to believe in yourself when you needed it; and helped you reach for the stars. Maybe it is a Aunt, Grandmother, Friend, Neighbor, Step-Mother, older sister... This May issue has so many local businesses who can help you celebrate the Moms in your life! Please shop local, as our small businesses need your support to survive.

Happy May!
In my first four months on the Town Board, I have been busy attending local events and meeting many people in our community. It’s been a rewarding experience that gives me a new appreciation for all the caring, hard-working, community-minded individuals who work together to improve our town and make other people’s lives better. We recently created a Facebook page named “Town of Kinderhook” where we’re working hard to keep you up to date on local events and job openings. These events are a great way for you to get involved, whether it’s a free community dinner, a concert or a Board meeting. The job postings are updated regularly and anyone can read and post to this online document. Share it with those who need a change or are looking for work. My son and I attended the Ichabod Crane D.C. club’s McTeacher Night fundraiser at McDonalds in Valatie where they earned 20% of the night's sales. This is a great example of how organizations and people in our community step up to support our children. The club, organized by Ichabod teacher Lara Marotta, raises money for Middle School students to fund annual trips to Washington D.C. The club also collects box tops to raise money towards their trip. You can help by going to https://www.boxtops4education.com/ enter Ichabod Crane, choose Ichabod Crane Middle School, and follow the prompts. I am a wife, mom and councilwoman in the Town of Kinderhook. My goal is to keep you abreast of interesting news coming out of our Town. I want to share the things that mean so much to us as a family and member of this great community. There are approximately 8,400 people in the Town of Kinderhook, which is comprised of Kinderhook, Niverville and Valatie. See for yourself why this ghost story...With a twist, inspired by true events should be on your summer reading list! Local author J.E. Kross treats you to the following excerpt...

Claire lowered herself to the ground to complete the ritual, and again stretched her arms over her head. She used the candle positioned at the Eastfacing stone to light one corner of the piece of parchment paper that had been in her pocket. The words written upon it had been prepared with great care, in anticipation of this night. She watched in silence as the paper burned down to ash, which began its midnight flight to the cosmos to do her bidding.

“So mote it be,” Claire said, almost to herself. She rose to her feet, brushed some of the snow from her clothes, and placed the star back in the box. She picked up her wand from the altar and walked to the North-facing stone, raising her right arm above her head one more time.

“The circle may be undone but not broken,” she chanted. “Merry meet, merry part, and merry meet again.”

From the corner of her eye, Claire saw two brilliant spheres of light floating toward her and flinched. As the spheres drew closer, Claire could feel the presence of her mother and grandmother. Thoughts and images floated across her mind’s eye like a screen, and she felt a sudden sense of urgency as they communicated with her.

She knew that the presence of the spheres was a direct result of her request for protection from the Ancient Ones. Still, she had flinched as they materialized from the darkness. Lately, when Claire showed up at work, a trace scent would irritate her nostrils. She knew that smell; it told her that something ominous was about to happen. Sometimes she would catch a glimpse of a dark figure with red eyes lurking in the corners. Mom and Nana were now telling her to pay close attention to these signs. Claire was struck by the way these messages were being presented to her. Normally, when she was shown future events or given information, the colors were vivid, unearthly, even dazzling. But these images were cloudy and dull. Most of them were too difficult to make out with any clarity. The parts she could perceive were dark and ominous. Railroad tracks in the dead of night. Feelings of dread.

Claire heard the sound of an animal screeching in pain, and whirled around in a circle, staring out into the blackness that surrounded her. She felt eyes on her, and shuddered, just as the harsh and unmistakable smell reached her nostrils. She nervously rubbed the scar that ran down the left side of her face. She knew what the smell was. It was burning hair and sulfur. It was hideous. It was his smell. The images dissipated as quickly as they’d materialized, as Claire focused on the demonic red eyes that now peered at her from the darkened woods. The two spheres that had been circling her rose high into the sky and disappeared among the stars. The malevolent eyes stared through the dead-seeming forest for a long moment, then twinkled briefly and disappeared into nothingness. A chill raced through Claire’s body. She collected her tools and repacked the altar, and walked back through the woods. She no longer noticed the cold night air or the icy ground crunching under her feet. Her mind was consumed with a sense of impending danger. Want to read more? Mac-Hayden Theatre Celebrates 50 years! As Mac-Hayden Theatre celebrates their 50th Anniversary year, I wanted to share a little history on how this incredible organization began... On May 16th, 1978, If you asked Linda MacNish “How did Mac-Haydn get started?”, she would smile and say “Well, it was either start a theatre or drive to Alaska.” After some thought about it, she and co-founder Lynne Haydn opted to try putting on musicals in Chatham, just for one summer. That was in 1969, when The Mac-Haydn Theatre was started on a shoestring, in a cow barn, and went on to prove that the area could and would support good theatre. Lynne was an aspiring actress and Linda was writing and producing offBroadway shows and managing talent when the two met in New York City. A mutual love of musical theatre led to the classic “Let’s find a barn and put on a show!” Linda’s local roots led them to Chatham; at that time the closest professional theatre to this area was Broadway. A search for performance space led to the Chatham Fair Grounds. Some floor scraping, dressing room painting, auditioning and many rehearsals later, The MacHaydn Theatre’s premiere opening night brought the stage lights up on “My Fair Lady” on July 6, 1969. At the end of that first season, enough people asked “Are you going to do this again next year” that they decided to try it again. And again and again, until now as they celebrate their 50th Anniversary season! They quickly outgrew the rented cow barn, and moved everything including seats (folding chairs borrowed from area churches and funeral homes), costume and prop pieces, pianos and even the stage at the start and end of each season. Having their own space meant a huge remodeling project to create dressing rooms, costume and set shops, rehearsal room, box office and offices in a space that had most recently been a doll furniture factory. Wonderful donations of the former Chatham Post Office façade, and theatre seats from Tony Quirino at the Crandell Theatre, along with a host of hardworking volunteers, and even some of the performers, it all came together for the opening of “Fiddler On The Roof” in June of 1978. That first season there were about a dozen New York City performers, a few technicians, musicians, a director, combined with a lot of area volunteers both on and off stage. Today there are almost 100 people on payroll throughout the summer in all departments. There has always been enormous talent on stage; Joe Lane played several feature roles and went on from Chatham to become Tony-Award winner Nathan Lane. He is just one of the many Mac-Haydn alumni who have had and are having successful careers ‘in the business.’ Currently the Mac-Haydn is represented in several Broadway Shows, National and International Tours, Regional Theatres across the country, and some have even ventured into Film and Television. This fulfills the second purpose Mac-Haydn was founded on: to provide a high-quality professional place where young theatre hopefuls can expand their experience and talents to become the ‘stars of tomorrow’. Sadly, Linda MacNish passed away in 2002. At that time, people asked if the theatre would continue without her. Lynne answered “It would not be right to her memory to do anything else”. Hundreds of performers and creative staffers and thousands of audience members have been through Mac-Haydn’s doors since the first show in 1969. Now here we are, as they launch their 50th year of entertaining us! Matinee and evening performances are first week Thursday through Sunday, second and third weeks Wednesday through Sunday; times vary. Tickets are $39.50 and $38.50 for evenings, $36.50 for all matinee seats. Group rates are available, discounts for children under 12 and seniors. Call 518-392-9292 for tickets and information; visit www.machaydntheatre.org for Mac-Haydn news and to order tickets online.

‘Veteran Next Door’ By Frank DeSorbo Memorial, Memory and Me In the Merriam-Webster online dictionary the definition
for ‘memorial’ stated:
*Serving to preserve remembrance; commemorative and *Of or relating to memory Many think of Memorial Day as first nice weekend of the summer season. With parades and parties, Veterans are honored and revered. They deserve the respect and honor but many see Memorial Day as a holiday and a day off of work. Patriot Flight Veterans rode on at least 15 parades on the Uncle Sam float in 2017. Most of them were in May in commemoration for Memorial Day. The Veterans and Patriots sing patriotic songs and wave to the Veterans and people the watching the parade. Being on the Uncle Sam float makes memories for Veterans and is a unique way to observe a parade. Please come to join us, our contact information is at the end of this article. Over the years I have some very emotional memories and inspiring stories from Veterans. Recently I met a living WW II legend and he one of the many ‘Veterans Next Door.’ I was helping this Veteran fill out his application for the April 28th Patriot Flight. I saw on his wall a shadow box with 3 medals. The Purple Heart medal was in the middle with the bronze star to the left and the Silver Star to the right. I feel very comfortable conversing with Veterans and I first asked how he received the Purple Heart. He was assigned as a squad leader of 5 or 6 men. It was the second day of the Battle of the Bulge – December 17, 1944. He was leading his group to a house where you could here children noises in the basement. He was slowly walking up the stairs to the second floor. He was surprised when a German soldier lunged at him with his bayonet. He was equally surprised that the German did not shoot him. He was blessed, if being lunged at by a bayonet could be considered a blessing. The bayonet did not ‘pierce’ his metal helmet. The German’s jab bounce off the helmet slid down and into the Veterans shoulder. He got one shot at him and his comrades followed with a few more. I did not have to ask how he received the Silver Star. I told him that he that he must live with the angels. Fate and being with the angels, how does a bayonet not pierce the helmet of Dick Pearce (spelled different, pronounced the same.) Dick recovered 3 months later and in March 1945 he returned to his unit. Upon his return to the 87th Infantry Division Company E, he was one of 26 left of the 206 original men. I met Dick most recently at the March 2018 Battle of the Bulge Meeting. Lois Dysard and Lois Wilson approached him about taking the Patriot Flights of April 28, 2018. We always have a sensitive and humbling spot in our hearts for the WW II Veterans. There are fewer each day and rare to find one with a Silver Star. We are blessed to have him on the flight and I am blessed to share a memory that is so appropriate for Memorial Day. God Bless all Veterans, you deserve so much more than we can ever give. Effie & Isables is your Local Source for Brands You Love It was 7 years ago that John McNiven, owner of Scott’s Hallmark Stores around the capital district, purchased Ann’s Hallmark in Rensselaer. It was at this time, that John began his relationship with the Our Towne customers. He grew up in the “Hallmark Family,” so to speak. His dad worked for Hallmark as a sales person and then opened their first Hallmark store in Colonie Center almost 45 years ago. John joined the family of Hallmark chain stores and now owns 7 across the Capital District. When space became available next to Scott’s Hallmark in Rensselaer, he decided to pursue his idea of creating a Giftique that would deliver better branded items and retail lines to the Our Towne communities. The idea of providing the Our Towne communities a place to purchase better brands, “on this side of the river,” was embraced immediately. You can still “shop local” and support a family business, while purchasing the better retail brands. Effie & Isabel’s Giftique is named after his grandmothers. Providing higher end but affordable brands is the essence of the business. What makes it most successful? John fully credits his managers, staff & customers. Between the two Effie & Isabel’s Giftiques and 7 Hallmark stores, Without the support of his fantastic employees he said that there would be little success and growth. His employees are dedicated to providing excellent customer service, and getting to know the customers on a deeper level. “When you pick out a gift at Scott's Hallmark or Effie & Isabel’s Giftique, you are celebrating moments in life. It may be a happy occasion such as a birthday, anniversary or graduation. But, we also help our customers honor those who have left us by picking out a memorial piece.
Ingredients
We sell many Pandora charms & Alex & Ani bracelets that show support for causes dear to the customer.” John adds that “we are in the business of social expression, and want to help our customers celebrate all aspects of life through their purchases.” The staff can assist you in picking out the right jewelry or piece when you share the motivation behind your purchase. They do value the connection with their customers and will certainly take the time to help you choose just the right gift for yourself or others.

Town of Schodack Supervisor David Harris April 2018 Report In a continuing effort to keep residents informed and aware of my activities I submit to them this summary of my report for April of 2018. As always, the full report can be found on the Town’s website or it’s social media pages by searching for Town of Schodack on Facebook or Twitter. As many of you may have heard, the town received a conceptual plan in March for a commercial property on Route 9. While many of the details are yet unknown, I have written a letter explaining everything we do know, the process that this proposed plan will go through, and some general considerations our Town must take in regards to development in general. For those of you interested in reading that letter in full it is available on the Town’s website, https://www.schodack.org/, in addition to the Town’s Facebook and Twitter pages. In late March, I received the exciting news that a local business, A. Servidome Inc, would be receiving a State funded grant from the Restore New York Communities Initiative. The grant totals $800,000 that Servidome will use, in addition to their own funds, for the purposes of purchasing a neighboring property, demolishing the defunct motel that currently exists on it, and building an expanded headquarters for itself. This project benefits the Town by cleaning up and adding value to this underutilized property. I would like to congratulate Servidome on the awarding of this grant. On April 21st, I had the honor of attending the ribbon cutting ceremony celebrating the grand opening of the Castleton Diner. This Diner marks another step in the revitalization process of Main Street in Castleton. The Village has been without this type establishment for years and this presents an exciting opportunity for Village and Town residents alike. I would like to thank the Castleton Diner for inviting me and wish them the best of luck. As always please follow our social media pages for news and updates, and please reach out to me with any concerns or comments you might have.

Glendora’s Jokes & Vegetarian Club
A man was very near death. He had only a few hours to live, but he was at home. His wife had baked a batch of cookies, and he reached over to take one. She said, “Don’t eat those; I need them for the funeral!” A young girl was noisy in church. Her mother whispered in her ear, and she calmed down. After the service the mother was asked, “What did you whisper in her ear?” She answered, “I told her that if she makes noise the pastor will lose his place and have to start his sermon all over again.” The enthusiastic preacher declared, “Let’s take all the beer in town and pour it into the river!” The next hymn was “We Will Gather at the River.” The sign in the restaurant window said “Blended Coffee.” A customer asked, “What is it a blend of?” The waitress replied, “Yesterday’s and today’s.” The bank robber said to the bank teller, “One peep out of you and you’re geography!” The teller said, “Don’t you mean history?” The robber said, “Don’t change the subject!” GLENDORA VEGETARIAN CLUB The Glendora Vegetarian Club meets the last Wednesday of every month. Don't panic! Remove the hearing aids and batteries and dry them off with a clean cloth. If you have a Dri-aid kit (desiccant container) put them in and let them dry out over night. If you don't have a Dri-aid kit put the aids in a safe dry place and let dry over night. There is no need to use a hairdryer, and do not place in the oven or microwave. Most newer hearing aids are nano-coated (water resistant) so after they dry they should come back to life. After allowing to dry overnight, place a new battery in each hearing aid and they should be working appropriately. If you find they are not working, or are emitting static bring them to your audiologist to evaluate and possibly repair any damaged components. Charges may apply depending on clinic and warranty status.

“Gazing Up & Looking Back” By Dennis DeLisle Brilliant Jupiter continues to rise earlier in the evening as the month progresses. Saturn, the ringed planet, will rise in the south-east about three hours after Jupiter as Memorial Day approaches. While Jupiter looks white to the naked eye, Saturn shines with a pale yellow color, making it easy to distinguish from other planets. For a real treat, look up on May 31st to see an almost full moon and Saturn rise together in the south-east around 10:30pm. The ancient Greeks observed that the position of the visible planets changed each evening in relation to the position of the stars - - they seemed to wander the sky. Interestingly, the word planet is derived from the Greek word “planetai”, which translates to “wanderer”. Try observing this effect as the evenings become more comfortable this month. Sharp eyes will notice movement over the course of just 2 or 3 days. Long term observers will be treated to a retrograde movement of Jupiter (i.e., it appears to move backward) later this summer. This is due to the Earth ‘passing’ Jupiter as they race around the sun. Stay tuned since it will not be long before Mars joins this summer’s planet party.
Dennis studied Astronomy, Physics, Computer Science and Mathematics at UAlbany, graduating in 1976. After 41 years in the world of Information Technology, he is now able to spend more time sharing his love of science and math with young and old alike. Cindy, the love of his life, and dd live in Castleton, where they grew up, met and married.

Tick Time! It’s that time of year again… the return of ticks! There are many types of ticks and as most know, ticks can carry diseases such as Lyme, ehrlichiosis and anaplasmosis. Every year, we struggle to control them on our dogs, because without action, we are risking their health. A first course of action is to be sure your dog does not have a tick-borne disease. One common test checks for four diseases at once (Lyme, ehrlichiosis, anaplasmosis and heartworm). A small blood sample is taken, and results are back in less time than it takes to go through a coffee shop drive-through line. Given that our area is endemic for Lyme disease, your veterinarian may recommend the Lyme vaccine. The vaccine is administered followed a couple weeks later by a booster. Afterward, your dog may require only an annual booster. Flea and tick preventatives are also effective. They reduce the risk for pets developing a disease by repelling or killing pests. There are three basic types of tick prevention medications: topical, which are applied to the skin; oral, which are eaten; and collars, which are continuously worn.

Some products have label claims that they help repel ticks while others claim to kill the ticks quickly when the tick feeds. You may see ticks on your pet even though you are using a product, that does not mean the product is not working or effective. Of the three types, topicals may be the most recognizable. These medications come in a small squeeze tube, each tube pre-measured with a single dose. The liquid is squeezed out onto the skin in target areas usually along the spine, between the shoulder blades and near the base of the tail (specific product instructions are included with each product). These preventatives are easy to use and often the pet can swim or be bathed on the following day or so. They must be applied every month and may cause some greasy hair streaking for a couple of days. There are new oral medications that have been shown to be very effective in combating ticks and tick-borne diseases. The tablets have been FDA approved for pets and some have been shown to reduce the incidence of Lyme disease in dogs. They also help control other parasites such as mange. The tablets are easy to administer—just give your pet a tablet to eat. A few pets may have some nausea or vomiting with oral medications. The last option is a medicated collar. If worn continuously, some collars claim to provide protection for up to eight months. Although safe to use, it has some drawbacks. It may cause some irritation around the collar site; if eaten, it can cause poisoning or become an abdominal obstruction; and like any collar, it can get caught. The type of preventative you choose is an individual choice. Talk to your veterinarian since some products are safe for dogs but can be toxic or life threatening to cats. Always follow the label instructions. It is important to understand each products differences and choose the one that is right for you and your pet. Please contact us if you have questions. By Lapinski Dental
Dear Dr. Lapinski & Dr. Barile: My dentist said I needed a root canal. My sister says they don’t work Should I do it? Why do root canals get such a bad rap? It’s true. When a patient presents with an infection in the tooth or bone, the pain can be significant, like the worst. And, if that infection ends up being the nerve, then yes, a root canal can be an ordeal - but the pain is more likely the infection, and the root canal is the cure. It’s my experience that most people don’t even know that they need one. Tooth decay doesn’t always hurt until it becomes sensitive or hits the nerve and the nerve begins the process of dying. A root canal essentially is cleaning out that dying or dead nerve to prevent infection. Sometimes a simple cracked tooth or lost filling will require the root canal since there is simply not enough tooth exposed to hold onto a filling, saving the tooth and root structure, so the root canal is the best course of action. To answer your question. It’s estimated that 95% of root canals (or greater) are a successful treatment when completed properly. Now, that’s a loaded sentence. First, not all root canals are the same. Sometimes a tooth has a very large abscess in the bone and even a well done root canal has a higher than normal failure rate because the body cannot heal the damage. There can be curved roots, microscopic canals and even calcified roots. Sometimes, we get in there and find the tooth is fractured vertically. If this happens, there is really nothing we can do to close that fracture and the tooth cannot be saved.
S
The most unfortunate cases I see are when a patient gets a successful root canal but doesn’t get the recommended crown (as a protective covering), because they are out of pain. Then the fragile tooth cracks and they lose the tooth after all. We see and treat many root canals each week in our office, but we assess each case and make recommendations based on what is best for the patient. Sometimes we might refer a patient to a specialist for a number of reasons. Specifically, the specialist (endodontist) sees cases, all day, every day and often has the added training and extra equipment to tackle the most complex scenarios. These days, root canals are quicker and more comfortable than they’ve ever been. Advances in the filing systems that we use, plus specialized microscopes, all help the practitioner perform a better root canal. Getting the treatment done can help improve your chances to keep your tooth for a long time - and maybe for the rest of your life. So you may have to have a conversation with your sister about this. While I have not seen your specific case, so can’t make a total recommendation, but I can say that if I were diagnosed with needing a root canal, I would know the odds of success are in my favor. Keep asking your questions. We are here to help you keep your smile for a lifetime. DrJoe@LapinskiDental.com www.LapinskiDental.com | DrJoe@LapinskiDental.com
