The Our Towne Spotlight Shines on... Prestige Sealcoating From April to November, if the sun is shining, you can find Prestige Sealcoating working to beautify tired & faded driveways around Our Towne. Founded in 2005, Eric Piche had the dream to be the largest sealcoater in the Capital District. With roots right here in East Greenbush, Eric began a journey that would challenge him in more ways than he could ever imagine. Eric, his brother Adam, and a team of professionals can revive your blacktop and make it look new again. As any business owner will tell you, there isn't a day that goes by in those first few years that you don't learn many lessons and grow as a business owner. With the assistance of his brother Adam, he is thriving and continues to grow. After working as a manager for a large sealcoating company for a few years, he found himself without a job after the Albany division was closed. With his experience and desire to be his own boss, he founded Prestige Sealcoating. Starting without any financial backing, Eric maintained his strong work ethic and the value of dedicating ones self to a goal. You don't quit when things get hard. You open yourself up to knowledge from others and learn from your mistakes. His family instilled in Eric, and his brother, that from working hard and being persistent, success will follow. Eric says that “when you start with nothing, everything is an experience.” "We treat all of our customers the same. Residential & Commercial jobs get the same attention to detail, commitment to quality and ultimate goal of 100% customer satisfaction. Whether it is doing a commercial job like Kinderhook Bank, Adirondack Tire Centers, FunPlex and America’s Best Value in East Greenbush, a church in Kinderhook, Lansingburgh Little League in Troy or a neighbor in The Pastures, we take pride in big and small jobs. All of our work and dedication to each job is consistent and appreciated." They have maintained many businesses in the Capital District and beyond into other states. Their reputation has certainly gained them many referrals and repeat customers.

Eric notes that in this industry, customers should find a seal coater that has good references, updated equipment, is fully insured and uses good quality products. “The cheapest is not the best. You don’t want a cheap sealer, you won’t be happy with the product or outcome.” Wanting to support other local businesses, Eric only buys the best sealer from Copeland Coating in Nassau. What you can expect from Prestige Sealcoating is a professional, efficient team who will work harder for you than no other. They are very flexible with scheduling to accommodate your busy life. Working 7 days a week, they may be a little tired, but very grateful for the business. With several trucks they can fit you into the schedule in under two weeks (weather permitting). After 8 busy months of sealcoating, Prestige waits for the snow to fall so they can plow those driveways that they maintained during the summer. You can view many before & after photos on Facebook, and on their website: www.prestige-sealcoating.com. Call 518-477-6123 for an estimate today. Remember-“YOU CAN TURN YOUR DRIVEWAY FROM OLD AND CRACKED TO RICH AND BLACK” with one call. They guarantee that you will get a free estimate within 24 hours! Now that is a well run, efficient business that is certainly dedicated to customer satisfaction. Another great business that is established and operated in Our Towne. Support your local businesses!

Local Authors Pen Ghost Story... It’s a ghost story...with a twist...inspired by true events.

There’s a grisly fatality on the railroad near Lake Champlain. The Road Foreman called to investigate the tragedy, is a woman by the name of Claire Montgomery, who also happens to be both a Witch as well as a Medium. When Claire arrives on the scene and climbs up onto the engine to interview the traumatized Engineer, the investigation begins to spiral out of control as the spirit of the girl who was hit appears inside and communicates with her. The exchange troubles Claire to her core as she begins to suspect a crime has been committed. With the help of her skeptical best friend, Teri Cooper, the two embark on a dangerous game of cat and mouse in the darkest regions of the spirit world to solve the crime. "A wonderful departure from the normal murder mystery... exciting, suspenseful, and edgy!" —Barry Kerch, Drummer for Shinedown

“I knew after reading the first few pages that I would be along for the whole ride!”

—James Bonner, President at New York & Atlantic Railway

HE'S COMING FOR CHRISTMAS 2018 "There is a line that exists within each of us. A line that separates those invisible things...The light and dark side of human nature.

And it exists just over there...hidden for centuries beyond a veil... What if one man discovered not only that very thin line... but wielded the power to destroy it altogether?"

Dr. Nancy Ann Quimby Dr. Kurt W. Relation Does your child or teen have heel pain? It may be a condition known as Sever’s disease, also known as calcaneal apophysitis. This is a medical condition that causes heel pain in one or both feet. It typically affects children between eight and fourteen years of age, and recent research has shown that it occurs in males slightly more than females. You may notice your child limping especially after a running activity, and heel pain may be noticed after participation in sports. Children who are very active are affected more frequently, because of the stress and tension placed on their feet. Sever’s disease occurs at a part of the child’s heel known as the growth plate (calcaneal epiphysis). This is attached to the Achilles tendon on the back of the heel. This area can suffer injury when the muscles and tendons of the growing foot do not keep pace with bone growth. Therefore, the constant pain which one experiences at the back of the heel may make the child unable to put any weight on the heel.

In conversation with Hollis Seamon (author and retired Professor of English at the College of St. Rose), Jon will discuss his background, his path toward fiction, and what led him to write a ghost story that deals not just with spirit photography, but with the larger issue of slavery’s legacies in the United States. If you loved Cold Mountain and The Alienist, this novel of historical suspense will be right up your alley! Join us as we celebrate our incredible local talent, and maybe even discuss some of our own Kinderhook ghosts. Books will be available for sale and refreshments will be served. The Northern Columbia Little League (NCLL) has played an important role in our community since the early 1950’s, providing generations of kids and families with opportunities to enjoy the game of baseball while congregating with neighbors and friends at local parks. This year we continued the tradition of kicking off the season with an Opening Day celebration, with nearly 300 players and 1000 people overall attending. It was a huge success, including activities such as a parade, the singing of the National Anthem, the first pitch, snacks at the Lee Norton concession stand, raffle prizes and of course lots of ball games. This event would not be possible without the dedication of the many volunteers and local businesses who generously contributed their time and resources to coordinate the event. Chris’ Cafe made a significant contribution of breakfast and lunch foods to directly benefit NCLL. Additionally, many other businesses and residents donated various drinks, food, and raffle prizes to support the league. Thank you to everyone who contributed and participated. We look forward to seeing you all next year! There

was this time ... By Daryl Bart There was this time when I took 4 pregnancy tests simply to confirm what I already knew. You taught me that I was ready for anything that came my way, and there was no time like the present. There was this time, a week past your due date, and I was listening to a summer concert at the Empire State Plaza, trying to squeeze out my last few minutes of life as I knew, even though I knew for sure I was in labor. 24 hours later, you made us a family and me a mom, teaching me in an instant that I couldn’t love anything more than you.

There was this day when you somehow got past my legs and the gate at the top of the stairs, and tumbled so fast, I couldn't catch you till you reached the bottom. You taught me that sometimes things happen beyond our control, but a hug, some deep breaths and ice cream can usually make it ok.

FO

There was this time when I stood hidden and watching you thru the glass door of the child care room at the YMCA as you cried for what seemed like forever. It took all the strength I had to walk away to go take the exercise class I had come for in the first place. You taught me that there’s room for self care in parenting, and that we’re both a little bit better for it in the long run.

Di

There was this time when you sheepishly walked us to the place where you “accidentally” drew all over the wall with an entire tube of red lipstick. You taught me that remaining calm and turning to google can provide most of the parenting and cleaning answers. There was this time, on the first day of kindergarten, and the bus arrived, when, much to our surprise, you stepped up, introduced yourself to the driver and didn't look back, teaching me that you can be independent and polite and don't always need us by your side. There was this time, when we signed you up for t-ball, when the bat looked exceptionally long and the helmet looked exceptionally large, but we knew right then and there you had found your special sport. You taught me that regardless of the fact that I’d never be a baseball fan, I could be your advocate, and biggest fan. There was this time when you peeked out from under the covers, while I tried to tuck a $1 under your pillow. You whispered “I knew it was you”. I returned with a $5 bill, said “we’re square, just don’t tell your sister, it can be our secret” and you taught me that having you as an ally would come in handy more than once. There was this time, when grandpa passed away. We felt you were old enough to come to the funeral. On your own, you brought a giants baseball cap and put it in the casket, so Poppy would remember you from heaven. You showed me that compassion and sensitivity are your innate traits. There was this time that your coach didn't put you in the game. With class and quiet resolution, you showed way more maturity than I could muster in my mind, teaching me, again and again, that when you commit to a team, your part matters, on or off the field, every time. There was this time, after working and saving for your first car, and after practicing with us, that you wanted to go somewhere on your own. I watched you drive away and you taught me that I needed to trust that you had skills, the tools and the confidence to be safe. There was that time you said that someday you wanted to visit all the countries of your heritage. It started us on a journey that keeps our passports stamped and our global vision sharp. You taught us to refine our real wish for you and that it’s to have a curious mind and an independent spirit. We’re confident these things will be the foundation of your success. In fewer days than I choose to count, you’ll be graduating and then leaving for the college that picked you. And while it seems like all the parenting we’ve done is culminating in this one event, you continue to teach me that no matter how many times you leave, my heart has enough pieces to stay whole, even though I send parts with you, every time. So many wonderful times, yet where did the time go? Congratulations and Best of Luck to the class of 2018!

YEAR LEASE!

518-758-2919 518-378-2207

WWW.OLDKINDERHOOKSELFSTORAGE.COM Can you believe it has only been a year since Castletonon-Hudson Main Street Association first met? In that time we received 501c3 status, raised funds for a nautical flagpole, created the Main Street Mile, hosted Main Street Day and Main Street Mile Kickoff events, sold historic calendars depicting historic photos of Main Street, organized cleanups of Main Street and Riverfront Park, partnered with Schodack Central school students to paint autumn scenes on storefront windows, were featured on the local news, established connection with Congressman Tonko, County Executive McLaughlin, Hudson River Keepers, and Parks & Trails NY, advocated for traffic control measures such as crosswalks and solar powered speed signs, defended a zoning variance for installation of a sign for a new business, conducted listening sessions with local business owners and residents, and constructed, painted, planted, and maintained flower boxes. Phew. That was year 1. We are already moving on year 2 projects. Things are looking bright on Castleton-on-Hudson Main Street. Stay tuned for more. -Nathan Hans, Castleton-on-Hudson Main Street Association

June Community Events Annual Run for Help June 10th The Family and Friends of Liza Ellen Warner have finalized plans for the 11th annual Run for Help. Sunday, June 10th, 2018 is the date; the place is Goff Middle School, Gilligan Road, East Greenbush. This yearly event is held to draw attention to the scourge of domestic violence, all too prevalent in our society today. Two members of our community— Liza Ellen Warner and Nikki Hart—lost their lives as victims of domestic violence. Martha Lasher-Warner, Liza Ellen’s mother, notes that “Victim empowerment is a central tenant of our work.” Warner who is a member of the National Board of Trustees of Parents of Murdered Children goes on to state, “by engaging the entire community we are able to maximize and leverage existing resources to better serve all victims of crime and provide the necessary support through their journey toward healing.” There is a 5K run/walk beginning at 10:00am. There will be a “kids run” at 9:30am. T-shirts for the first 300 entries. The registration fee is $30 up to June 7th; $35 the day of the race. Children’s registration is $15.00. Register on line at ZippyReg.com?event=1077 or the day of the race. Further information is found at Remembering Liza.org or UnityHouseNY. org. A grand auction will be held during the course of the morning. Proceeds from the race will benefit the domestic violence program at Unity House, Troy, New York.

“Gazing Up & Looking Back” By Dennis DeLisle The planet Mars joins the evening planet parade at the end of June and will continue to brighten until July 26 when Mars will be at “opposition”; i.e., Mars and Earth are on opposite sides of the sun. Look to the southeast on June 29 and 30 to watch the nearly-full moon and a ruddy-red Mars, slightly lower and to the right, rise together about 3 hours after sunset. June also brings the end to the school year. I remember staying up very late to use my telescope or play basketball with friends in the road using a backboard nailed to the telephone pole across the street from my house. We would turn on every outside light on our homes and, thanks to our young eyes, we could play ball all night long. Baseball during the day. Hoops in the road late into the evening. Repeat all summer long. Extended time at the telescope came when the larger families went on their summer vacations, leaving us short-handed for team sports. On clear nights, I would be outside, teaching myself to recognize the constellations and understand how each one fit into the mythology of the skies.

Dennis studied Astronomy, Physics, Computer Science and Mathematics at UAlbany, graduating in 1976. After 41 years in the world of Information Technology, he is now able to spend more time sharing his love of science and math with young and old alike. Cindy, the love of his life, and dd live in Castleton, where they grew up, met and married.

Ask the Audiologist

Q

By Madison Hearing Center

: YOU THOUGHT YOU HEARD WITH YOUR EARS?

A

: All the newest studies regarding hearing are looking at what happens at the brain level Dr. Chris Raffo when stimulated with sound. The new consensus is that the ears are just the gateway for sound vibrations to be changed into neural activity for the brain to interpret. From the simplest sounds to complex listening activities , your brain is responsible for making sense of everything you hear. Therefore, for the brain to interpret sounds correctly , the information it receives must be as accurate and detailed as possible. Hearing loss increases the amount of energy it takes to understand and process this information. Newest information shows a doubling of the possible of dementia with just a mild untreated hearing loss. Because of this new information and understanding of how important hearing is to brain health newer technologies in hearing aids are addressing these issues. Technology preserves the important details of speech, works the left and right ear hearing aid together as one system to help you locate sound, reduces the effort involved in listening and takes your personal listening preferences into account. HMMM....and you thought it was your ears doing the listening!

Fantastic Sams Celebrates 20

years in

Our Towne

Debra Penesso began her career at Fantastic Sams in 1990 as a salon manager. As a hair stylist and manager, she jumped at the opportunity to purchase the salon 20 years ago when the owner was ready to move on. As a resident of East Greenbush, she was thrilled to own the organization that she managed. A few years later, the Fantastic Sams on Hoosick Street in Brunswick became available, and she was happy & ready to grow her business. Debra is known in the industry as a technical salon owner. She continues to work with clients and exercise her creative abilities. At the same time, she is able to manage the business. Debra is a very creative person, who has a mind for business and an ability to work with the public and her staff. Recently, the Albany region was recently sold to Corporate partners but Debra will remain the sole owner of her salons and it is “business as usual. Debra mentions that she will now have bigger buying power from Fantastic Sams vendors on a national level and looks forward to the next 10 years as a local business owner. As a salon owner, Deb says that the biggest challenge for her is that it is "hard to get hair stylists who have good customer service skills, good work ethic and those who have current skills for the industry." Continuing education and skill classes are mandatory for all Fantastic Sams employees. They were recently in Florida for hair workshops and this September will traveling to Las Vegas for a Fantastic Sams convention with 800+ other franchise owners and stylists. The company has their own educator who provides salons with a monthly calendar of continuing education classes. Stylists attend a minimum of 4 classes a year to stay current, along with attending hair shows and conventions. Most stylists attend many more of the free classes to expand their skills and learn new techniques. Debra notes that "In this field, it is very important to stay up on the current trends in the industry, so I will bring staff to hair shows and conventions." The employees are compensated with a base hourly rate, plus a bonus & commission. Full time staff receive health insurance as well as retirement. Not very many salons offer such great benefits. As I was speaking with Debra, I thought that this sounds like a great company to work for. One of Debra's greatest feelings of accomplishment is when she hires a new stylist who has little experience and can mentor them; help them grow and become confident and successful in front of her eyes. She has many stylists who have been with her for years and is always looking to hire those who have a good work ethic, ability to work with the public and the interest to grow their skills and stay current with trends and changes in the industry. Fantastic Sams is a walk in full service family hair salon that offers a full range of services. From cuts, color, perms, waxing and styling for special occasions. Their goal is to offer you the highest level of service and products. They offer a popular line of products and, most of all, are affordable. Their main goal is to have you "leave looking and feeling great about yourself." If you sign up for the Fantastic Sams Loyality/Rewards program, you also receive coupons. Of course, you can also find great coupons in Our Towne Magazine each month. So, next time you want to walk in and get a cut, color, waxing or style, know that Fantastic Sams is ready to serve you. Open 7 days a week, Monday-Friday from 9-8, Saturday from 9-5 and Sunday from 10-3. At Fantastic Sams, you are "shopping local and supporting small business, and a local woman who lives in the community.

Do you ever pause to think about what you were doing at this time years ago? As I write to you I am thinking about what my life was like 18 years ago. It may seem like a random number, but it was the most exciting and scary time of my life. It was right around this time that my husband and I were busy preparing for our first child. “What to Expect When You Are Expecting” was highlighted and quite worn. The first few chapters of “What to Expect from the First Year” were being memorized and we were taking classes at the hospital that taught us how to swaddle, bathe and care for our little blessing. The birth plan was “up in the air” as our daughter was breech, and not likely to move before the big day (resulting in a C-Section). The baby shower was a lovely celebration with family and friends. The last-minute preparations and various to-do lists were dictating how we spent every minute and extra dollar before she arrived. Lots of plans & unknowns. We had no idea how drastically our lives were going to change and how every day would be a wild roller coaster. I absolutely love being a mom and have cherished every milestone... But this one is a little hard to wrap my head around. How is it that some days seem to last forever and yet the years fly by? Today, we are busy preparing for our little girls Graduation from High School. The lists are quite different. Like 18 years ago, it is a very exciting and scary time. She will be off to New York City this August to attend the Fashion Institute of Technology to study Business. So, my momma list now contains ordering pepper spray, scheduling a self-defense class and purchasing items for her dorm room (Yes, I am a over protective worry wort). Letting someone go to live their life and chase their dreams is not easy. But, the pride and joy I feel for her eases the heartache. I guess that is what you call bittersweet. Good health, safety and happiness is my wish for her. With those blessings she will conquer the world and write her own story. I think we should all get the chance to write our own story. Happy Father’s Day to the Dads in Our Towne! I have been blessed with the most amazing Dad and feel lucky to have a husband who has also dedicated his life to being an amazing father. The magazine is filled local businesses that want to meet you. Summer is here and the kids are out of school. Enjoy the start of SUMMER and thank you for reading Our Towne Magazine and listening to my momma bear rant.

Schodack Supervisor’s Report

for

May 2018

In a continuing effort to keep residents informed and aware of my activities I submit to them this summary of my report for May of 2018. As always, the full report can be found on the Town’s website or it’s social media pages by searching for Town of Schodack on Facebook or Twitter. As I mentioned last month, the Town received a conceptual proposal for a project located on Route 9 slightly south of the 9&20 split. We continue to receive and review updates regarding this project. If any residents are interested in viewing these documents, they have been made available on our website at https://www. schodack.org/planning-and-zoning or residents can visit the Town Hall during regular business hours and review them. Please follow our social media pages or the Town’s website for continued updates and announcements. After what felt like several false starts it finally feels safe to say Spring is here and in full effect. Our highway crew has been busy working to repair lawns and patch roads damaged after the significant plowing this past winter required. Our road program for the year includes the repaving of Irish Hill Road, Shufelt Road, Sand Road and Maria Drive. Additionally, Lape Road, Beaver Road, Schoolhouse Road, Poyneer Road, Rice Road, Sagendorf Road and Knickerbocker Road are slated to receive a Crack Fill/Single Chip Seal treatment. We appreciate the hard work Supervisor Holmes and our Highway Crew are doing and all they did this past winter to keep our roads safe. With the return of warm weather, I’d like to invite & encourage our residents to come join us for our free “Music in the Park” series of concerts taking place at our Town Park. Concerts take place on Tuesdays from 6-8 pm with rain dates being the following Wednesday. Concert dates for June are as follows: June 5th: Peaceful Country Band (country from the 50’s, 60’s, and 70’s) June 12th: Gone Grey (Classic Rock 60’s/70’s) June 19th: Triskele-Traditional & Contemporary Irish Music June 26th: Play Back Band (Classic Rock & Roll) I look forward to seeing you there!

By Lapinski Dental

Q: I keep hearing about Invisalign. What is it? A: I’m not surprised that you keep hearing about it - it’s become such a popular orthodontic treatment option. Invisalign is an alternative for straightening your teeth without traditional, bulky metal braces. The treatment consists of wearing a series of clear plastic aligners that fit over the teeth. They look like a nite guard or a retainer, made from a thin, clear, molded plastic. Every case is different but the average treatment time is similar to traditional braces, 6-18 months. You begin by wearing the aligners, in sequence. Each set is worn for approximately two weeks, then it’s exchanged for the next aligner in the series, and so on. Each new set of aligners gradually moves the teeth toward the end goal of achieving your perfect smile. The aligners are barely visible in the mouth and can be removed for eating or special occasions, however, you do wear them all the rest of the time during your active treatment. We estimate that is about 22 hours per day. There are no restrictions on the foods you can eat while in treatment (yay popcorn!) and no worries about metal braces getting in the way of your everyday life. We find that the patients who are most interested in Invisalign are adults who fall into a few categories. Either they have always wished for straighter teeth but don’t like the look of traditional braces or they had braces as a kid but didn’t wear their retainers, causing their teeth to become crooked again. Also, we see many patients whose teeth were always fairly straight but now have noticed some increased crowding or spacing as they age. Does this sound familiar? It’s not your imagination! Our teeth naturally move throughout our lifetimes, often creating a worsening of spacing or crowding issues. The benefits of straightening your teeth go beyond a beautiful smile--straighter teeth can help you maintain a healthy smile, can be easier to clean, often resulting in less inflammation, healthier gums, and fewer cavities forming between the teeth. If you have questions about whether you are a candidate for Invisalign treatment, please ask your dental professional. They can discuss the options that are best for you and address your specific concerns. Keep asking your questions. We are here to help you keep your smile for a lifetime. Q. I have glaucoma, and drops are no longer managing the pressure in my eyes. Are there any options besides surgery?

A. Many people who have glaucoma can control the pressure by using special drops. However, if drops are no longer working, in my patients I’ve implanted the XEN® (pronounced Zen) Gel Stent. Manufactured by Allergan, Xen is designed to lower high eye pressure in patients with moderate and severe glaucoma. The XEN Gel Stent insertion is an outpatient procedure. Unlike the older trabeculectomy procedure, there is no cutting or suturing of tissues. The recovery period is less intense and shorter, and complications occur less often and are less severe when they do occur. During the procedure, one end of the stent is placed inside the eye and the other end of the stent is placed just under the conjunctiva, which is the clear membrane that covers the white of your eye. The XEN Gel Stent lowers the fluid pressure inside the eye, helping to prevent vision loss from damage to the optic nerve. It is important to note that glaucoma cannot be cured. With early detection and proper treatment, vision can be preserved. The Xen Gel Stent procedure is an important advancement in the surgical treatment of glaucoma. If your glaucoma drops are no longer managing the pressure in your eyes, it’s important to act fast and discuss your options with a glaucoma specialist. Be sure to schedule an appointment immediately. At Ophthalmic Consultants of the Capital Region, we offer a comprehensive model of eye care with experienced specialists, ophthalmologists & optometrists. Locations in Albany, Clifton Park, Schenectady, Schodack, and Troy. To make an appointment call 518-777-2777 or visit the website: www.myoccr.com.

A Tale of Two Remarkable Girls In the veterinary practice, we meet many wonderful people, but recently, we met two young girls who walked into our clinic, and we have no doubt these young ladies will touch many lives to come. Once you know the details, you’ll agree, these are two remarkable people. We were having a staff meeting and, given the nature of our work, it was a trying day. As we were concluding, a pair of 10-year-old girls, Ella and Rayleigh, along with parents, stopped into the clinic. The girls were on a pay-it-forward mission. They left in our care just over a dozen books written by local television journalist and author John Gray. The book, God Needed a Puppy, was written to help guide children through the grieving process after losing a cherished family pet. Ella and Rayleigh wanted us to give one of the books to any child who had lost a pet. Rayleigh and Ella, we learned, are best friends. Ella’s mother, Heather, explained to us, they share the same birthday, February 8. “These girls are extremely kind and have the most generous hearts at such a young age,” she said. Three years ago, the girls decided to use their birthday to help others. At a joint birthday party, they asked for donations instead of gifts. The donations, the girls explained, would be given to two local animal rescue groups. Their families and friends supported the effort. That year, they collected $700 and gave $350 to each rescue group. Last year, the girls collected comfort items, like DVDs, toys, activity books and soft blankets, for hospitalized children at Albany Medical Center’s Children’s Hospital. And this year, as they planned their birthday celebration, they decided to do something to help children cope with the loss of a pet, and Gray’s book was the perfect solution. The book, we learned, was written after Gray lost a young puppy, Samuel. At only six months old, Samuel unexpectedly died, and Gray turned his grief turned into a children’s book. In an unexpected coincidence, the girls learned that February 10, the day they held their book-collecting birthday party, was a significant day for Gray. It was the birthday of Max, one of Gray’s other dogs who passed away late last year. Max would have turned 10 years old, the same age as Ella and Rayleigh.

Love your pet?

In all, the girls collected 50 books, and after hearing about their mission, the author generously autographed each copy. And then, with all books in tow, the girls journeyed to four different veterinary clinics to present their gifts, arriving at our clinic at the precise moment we needed the warm kindness they brought. We’ve had the opportunity to give a couple of the books away, and can say, the books were the right gift at the right moment – all thanks to the compassion of two young girls. Heather described Rayleigh and Ella perfectly, “They really are special girls. They have so much love for people and animals that they don’t even know and probably will never meet.” Ella and Rayleigh – thank you. You truly made our day!

We want to! Let’s meet...

How Memory Care and Assisted Living Embrace the Entire Family As we age, families evolve and change. Marriages. Births. New houses. But, it is the older generation that changes less often and remains the constant in an ever-expanding family. They know how to celebrate the holidays, cook recipes that have been passed down for generations, and keep the family connected. So when their situation changes, families learn new ways to keep traditions alive. Assisted Living and Memory Care communities make it easy. They embrace their residents and their families as equally important members of the community. Your loved one can continue being a valued participant in family gatherings, and you can remain an engaged part of their care and wellbeing.

Resident health and happiness are inextricably tied to a strong relationship between family and community.

Here are a few ways you can expect to continue these bonds:

Holiday Gatherings: The holidays are big days of the year at Senior Living Communities. It is a time for residents to celebrate with their friends and families. Communities provide ample space for families to visit and enjoy prepared meals and activities. If you are celebrating nearby, communities can also help coordinate transportation and assistance.

Coordinating Medical Updates: Top-quality Assisted Living

and Memory Care communities will work with a family’s designated decision maker to coordinate medical and personal updates. When your loved one first comes to a community, expect their caregiver to establish a relationship with you and share information on how you can always reach them.

Family Meetings: When a loved one is dealing with a major Support Groups: Senior living communities understand how

health complication or memory loss condition — it is important for families to stay connected and informed about their health care and progress. Communities provide space and opportunities for families to meet privately to discuss and make plans for their loved one’s future. Their caregiver will be available to share information and updates.

challenging it is to watch your loved one suffer from Memory Loss. That is why they host support groups to help people connect, share, and get advice from one another. In such an emotional time, it can be therapeutic to understand that you are not alone.
