The Our Towne Spotlight Shines on... J. Hunziker Paving Serving upstate New York for more than 14 years, J. Hunziker Asphalt Paving greatly values the opportunity to serve and provide superior asphalt paving services. After working in the field for a few years, Jason Hunziker decided that it was time for him to start his own company. From East Greenbush, Jason bought his first truck at 24 years old. With a passion for his work and a strong work ethic, he has successfully grown his business in the Capital District and beyond.
“J. Hunziker is big enough to serve, and small enough to care.” His reputation in the paving business has allowed him to grow by leaps & bounds in the past few years. He is always reinvesting in his business; purchasing new trucks and equipment looked cleaner than my car on any day of the year. They looked like showroom trucks, and yet, they were out on a job the day before. A very proud and hard working man, he is excited to share his work ethic and success with his son, Hank.
No job it too big or too small for this family business. His customers are impressed with his well run, professional team that beautifies homes and businesses for a reasonable price. The outcome is always beautiful, quality asphalt. “I’m passionate about this business. As a true perfectionist, I oversee every single project my paving contractors perform, and I don’t accept anything less than a flawless finished product. When you hire J. Hunziker Paving, LLC, for the job, you have my word that your asphalt paving, sealcoating, or repair project will be executed with absolute precision.” This is the kind of commitment and attitude that makes him so successful and valued. From his previous employers, he took the good & bad experiences and developed a company that now serves both residential & business customers. Jason and his crew are very hard working, focusing on all of the details and quality of service. J. Hunziker Asphalt Paving has proven to his customers that he is a legitimate, honest business that is not out to take advantage of the customer or provide lackluster asphalt services.
In addition to hundreds of valued residential customers, Jason has also recently paved commercial parking lots like IVY SPA and the new Citgo Station in Rensselaer. Not to mention, in the past years he beautified the new Hannoush Jewelers Flagship store on Wolf Road, Joe’s Crab Shack in Latham, the Taco Bell in Lake George, the 99 Restaurant, Loudon plaza in Albany & various Dunkin Donuts in the Capital District. He is highly respected in the community, and lives right here with his growing family in Our Towne.
J. Hunziker specializes in Driveways, Parking Lots, Seal Coating, Basketball Courts, Excavating, Resurfacing, Digouts, & Decorative Concrete. What has led J. Hunziker Paving down this road of success? “We offer the highest quality services and know what it takes to meet your needs and surpass your expectations. Our team of professional and highly qualified staff, work hard to meet the customer's individual needs. With updated insurance, equipment and a record of being reliable, you won't be disappointed.” He encourages all customers to research your options before contracting or handing over money when doing any home improvement project. There are a lot of sketchy people out there looking to take advantage of customers. Jason has an A+ Better Business Bureau rating and Our Towne is proud to highlight a local man with a successful local business!

Customer Review by Kristi Gustafson Barlette:
Every person or business has some area in which they could improve — or so I thought. We had J. Hunziker pave our 4,000-plus square foot driveway last week and I cannot think of one area in which they could improve. Some highlights: 1. I researched the heck out of local and national (AKA ones with local franchises) paving companies. We called four for estimates. One never showed. One showed and never sent an estimate. Another took more than a week to produce an estimate. J. Hunziker, on the other hand, had their estimate to us within a day. 2. We decided to go with them, not just due to price and the excellent reviews (ex: they have an A+ rating with the BBB), but because their “first impression” suggested they were reliable and dependable. That was true. We scheduled our driveway for two weeks out. They showed up on the scheduled date, right on time. 3. The whole crew was here at 7:30 a.m.. They were working by 7:35 a.m. — unloading equipment, marking out the driveway for sizing, etc. 4. Throughout the day, they didn’t stop once — not for lunch, not to chitchat or play on their phones, not even to use the bathroom. They were truly here to work, and that’s what they did (till after 4:30 p.m.). 5. Their work was meticulous. The driveway is smooth, the edges sharp and straight and they cleaned every last bit of yard waste and “garbage” up and hauled it away. 6. The whole team was polite, focused and was sure to check with us regarding a couple things along the way (re: a pipe that was running under the driveway, connecting our driveway to our side walkway). Overall, I would recommend them to friends, social media and professional connections, family, strangers, etc. The price was fair, the work top notch and the crew hardworking.

Nassau Pharmacy HealtH & Wellness Center
What is this “CBD” discussion all about, and…is it even legal? Scientific research now shows the many health benefits of CBD. Recent studies showed that 80% of chronic pain patients feel cannabinoids relieved their pain better than opioids, as well as decreased side effects and improved their quality of life. It’s gaining momentum in the health and wellness world, with some scientific studies confirming it may help treat a variety of ailments like chronic pain, anxiety, depression, insomnia, memory, energy, immunity digestion, substance abuse, and cancer related symptoms. It is even safe for your pets! CBD benefits are real because CBD does produce strong medicinal and therapeutic effects for even the most common conditions. It is not addicting and legal in all 50 states. You can purchase CBD in many forms: oils, creams, gummies, pills and for vaporizers. Nassau Pharmacy is your trusted local source for tested, high quality products without a prescription. The Pharmacy staff has been educated on proper dosages & the most effective form for your specific medical concerns. For example, they can tell you if CBD in a gummy form is more effective than a cream. With a very large selection of products, this local, independent pharmacy can offer you a personal consultation and certainly better guidance than what you would find on a website.

CBD has even been found to decrease addiction to opioids. How so? If a person has a prescription for a opioid pain killer, they can take less of that highly addicting drug (lessening the probability of developing an addiction) by using CBD to manage pain. The use of CBD alleviates chronic pain, decreasing the frequency of pain killer use. Stop by Nassau Pharmacy where you can consult with an educated, licensed pharmacist who will assess what product would work best for you. Have confidence that they only sell products from reliable companies who have test for quality and effectiveness.

Dear Our Towne Readers, As we enter June it is a time to enjoy the great outdoors and refresh our inner spirit as we are surrounded by green grass, flowers and leaves on the trees. It will be a very busy month for homes with children, and maybe a little stressful for those who are graduating and entering the “real world.” This transition is certainly exciting, but often comes with butterflies and anxiety of what the next chapter brings. Congratulations to all graduating from high school and college. After all of your hard work, you can now enter a new and exciting time in your life. A fresh start. A time to focus on new goals and put your best foot forward. You can’t move forward if you don’t take risks; you can’t fail or succeed unless you try. My first job out of college back in 1995, was doing menial clerical tasks that certainly did not require my $100,000 four year, private college education. Barely making $20,000 ($50,000 in college loan debt), I was grateful to be employed at a professional company. Was it the job I wanted? NO! I had a B.S. in Business Management with a double minor in Marketing and Psychology and was making copies, sending faxes and filing for those with more important positions. What did I get out of that job? Well, I stayed for a year (to build up my resume), gained valuable experience and knowledge about what it was like to work in “corporate America,” and then decided to go back to school and get my Master’s in Education. There is always something to learn about that first job. Especially when it seems “beneath you.” Everyone has to start someplace. What did I learn? That I would have to prove myself to others through hard work and professionalism, stay positive despite having a nasty and unappreciative manager and remain focused on future goals toward growth and advancement. This experience taught me so much about life and business, the reality of working for a large company, management styles, interpersonal skills, business etiquette, how you can’t always trust your co-workers, and that what you do for a job does not define you as a person. I could go on and on. My advice to you would be to have patience, be willing to start at the bottom and learn from those around you. Good or bad, there is always something to learn from a situation. Don’t give up, take risks, be true to yourself and stay ethical. You have to live with your decisions and getting ahead at any price never pays in the end. It’s a small world and believe me, you never know who you may see (again) in life at your next job. Be someone you can be proud of, even if it takes longer to get to the final goal. Happy Father’s Day to the Dads in Our Towne! It’s time to celebrate the Fathers in our lives; the men who have loved and supported us. I am so very grateful to have a wonderful father and even more blessed to also have a deeply devoted, loving and attentive father for my girls. Please continue to shop local and support the Our Towne businesses in the magazine. They need your support to succeed in their journey as a small business owner! Thank you for reading Our Towne.

News from THE ANCHOR Everyone at the Anchor wishes to thank all that participated in the annual Postal food drive held on May 11th. We depend on this annual non-perishable food drive to re-stock our shelves after a very long winter, particularly this year. Volunteers and postal workers did an exceptional job picking up the bags and bringing them to the waiting volunteers for sorting. To each and everyone who helped, we thank you. The community's generosity help us fulfill our goals in helping the less forunate in our Town and Village. There was a very successful Fund Raiser held at the Hill Retsaurant on May 16th. They generously donated a percentage of the in-house meals served that night to us. Thank you Jeff Swartz and all your staff for the delicious meals served; you certainly are an asset to our community. We appreciate all you do for us!

The Anchor would like to acknowledge the passing of a life long volunteer – Beth Hall. Our deepest sympathy goes out to Beth's family at this time. Beth had been intramental with our organizations just about from the start. She was a devoted Tuesday volunteer when the Anchor was on Main St. then thru several moves to where we are now. Beth loved fixing things, organizing the clothing rooms and doing the food calls. Always smiling and caring about others, she will be sorely missed by us all. Beth was truly an asset to the Anchor. Her family is planning a “Celebration” of her life sometime later in the summer. We will try to keep you posted when the date is announced. We finally have some nice weather and the gardens should by planted. Please remember, any excess produce can be donated to the Anchor whenever we are open. Our hours are Monday 5 to 7; Tuesday's and Thursday's 9 to 2 & the first Saturday of each month from 10-1. If you find your garden is over producing, please share! Have a wonderful start to summer!

Where you’re part of the family. Tues-Fri 9-7 (518) 203-7408 sAT 9-4 1 AgwAy Drive rensselAer Our Towne welcomes Frankie’s Barber Shop to our community of small business owners. Frankie De Rose, who graduated in 2011 from Averill Park, has been working as a barber since 2012. After years at Vinny’s Barber Shop and The Barber Parlor in Albany, Frankie wanted to open his own shop in the area where he calls home. Located at 1 Agway Drive, Rensselaer (North Greenbush), he has created his own shop that reflects his personality and sense of style. Classy, welcoming and warm. Located in the building where Jewelry by Don Cook & Pai's Taekwondo call home (next to Taco Bell), Frankie and his Dad remodeled the space early this year. He will soon have a total of 6 stations in the large and bright space, where he and his fellow barbers, Peter Muraski and Skyler Schur, work their magic. Frankie loves to meet new people; and wants you to feel at home and part of the family when you come in for a service. When guys experience the difference and Frankie’s Barber Shop, they are treated to cuts with straight razors, hot shave, hot towels, and an overall better cut of hair, beards, shaves, and eye brows. Everyone is treated to a hot towel & straight razor with every cut.

Q. What should I do about my burning, itchy dry eyes?
With
Stephanie Daly
A
. Dry eyes can have many underlying causes from medical to environmental conditions. Many patients find relief by using artificial tears on a regular basis. For patients who suffer from dry eye due to Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD), also known as evaporative dry eye or lipid deficient dry eye, I use LipiFlow® to help unblock the meibomian glands. Other ways to help alleviate dry eyes include: • Take Dry Eye Vitamins. Dry eye vitamins with Omega-3s help support proper tear function. • Use a Humidifier. A humidifier can help moisturize the air inside your home and bring relief to your dry eyes. • Protect Your Eyes Outside. Cold, dry air outside can bother your eyes. You can help protect them by wearing sunglasses. •Give Your Eyes a Break. Dry eyes can result from staring at a computer screen or phone for too long. Help your eyes stay moist by giving them scheduled breaks from staring at screens.

If you have dry eye or think you may have dry eye, it’s important to schedule an appointment with your eye doctor for a comprehensive eye exam. There could be an underlying medical condition that could be contributing to your dry eyes. Ophthalmic Consultants of the Capital Region offers a comprehensive model of eye care with experienced specialists, ophthalmologists & optometrists. Locations in Albany, Clifton Park, Schenectady, Schodack, and Troy. Ophthalmic Consultants of the Capital Region is a TearLab® Accredited Dry Eye Center. Reflections & Revelations By Suzanne St. Germain
Dear Dad – Happy Father’s Day. Sometimes you don’t get enough credit. Mom carries the baby for nine months, suffers morning sickness and enhanced aches and pains, perhaps. You are there to watch your child being born, to offer moral support but that particular day, you are not much of a participant but more of a bystander. Sometimes life throws a curve and you are both mom and dad. Thank you for stepping up your game. You mastered hair braiding and the occasional manicure that your friends tease you about. However, you do not have the heart to tell your sweet, little five-year-old that you don’t love princess pearl pink on your nails or the occasional tea party. And, don’t tell the guys, but sometimes your heart is so full of love for your little princess you feel a tear roll down your cheek. You teach little boys how to fish, ride their bikes and, more importantly, how to treat their future spouses. You are an example for them in your actions. You may forget that while you are building a new garage, watching a football game or communicating with their moms, they are watching you. They are learning their work ethic and character from your actions. That’s an amazing responsibility you are carrying. Perhaps your kids are grown or you never experienced parenthood. You are the teacher, coach, mentor to someone else’s little boys. Your impact does not lessen based on these roles. You may already know that some of these boys only have you to look up to for their male role model. There home is absent of their own father, so they rely on you to fill this void. You are making a difference. Happy Father’s Day to all of you. Whether you are a first-time father, have five kids or have found the years have passed too quickly and the grandkids are the littles that manipulate your heart.

Assistant Pastor Called to Clearview Christian & Missionary Alliance Church The Clearview Christian & Missionary Alliance Church is welcoming a new Assistant Pastor, Joel Geer, with his wife, Laura and their son, Josiah. The Geers will be joining in ministry at the church beginning in mid-June. Joel was raised in Camden County, New Jersey. Called to the ministry at an early age, he had dedicated his life to the Lord and to His service. That call that would be confirmed many times through the people around him and through opportunities he was given to serve in Christian ministry. Motivated by his calling, Joel attended Nyack College, in Nyack, NY, graduating in 2011 with a degree in Bible and Theology. In the summer of 2009, Joel met his wife, Laura, at a summer retreat in Ocean City, NJ, where it was love at first sight! One year later, to the day, they were engaged, and the following year, to the day, they were married. Laura, graduated from Cedarville University, in Ohio, and was a school teacher for seven years in Ringwood, NJ, before taking time off to raise their son, Josiah, born in August of 2017. In addition to her education background, Laura is extremely creative, enjoying music, acting and crafting. Before moving to Schodack, Joel served at Living Word Alliance Church as the Youth Pastor for seven years. While ministering there, Joel was able to attend Alliance Theological Seminary and Princeton Theological Seminary; first receiving his Masters of Divinity and then a Masters of Theology. He is very passionate about learning and sharing what he has learned with others. He also loves spending time with people, playing and watching sports, and taking time to be with his family. The public is invited to welcome the Geers to our area at an Open House to be held at Clearview C&MA Church, 275 Schodack Drive, Castleton, NY, from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM on Sunday, June 30th at the church. For those who wish to stay, there will be an Installation Service at 4:00 PM, followed by a dinner. You may contact the church at 518-732-2027.

Family Foot Care, P.L.L.C. Podiatric Medicine & Surgery
Dr. Nancy Ann Quimby Dr. Kurt W Relation
Do you have a mole on your foot that you have questions about? Is it new, or changing in shape or color? Is there any pain associated with the lesion? Moles can simply be a benign discoloration of the skin, or they can be a cancer hiding in plain sight.
Mary Resident since 2017
There are three distinct cancers that can appear on the foot: melanoma, basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma. Basal cell carcinoma is the most common type of skin cancer and is commonly found on sun-exposed areas but rarely spreads. Squamous cell carcinoma is less common but more serious than basal cell as it may spread to other areas of the body. Melanoma is the most serious skin cancer. It begins in the cells of the skin that produce pigmentation and can occur anywhere on the foot, including under the nail. It will then spread to other areas of the body as it grows beneath the surface of the skin Treatment of skin cancer varies depending on its type and location, and may include chemotherapy, radiation or surgical excision. Referral to an oncologist may be necessary in some cases. The specialists at Family Foot Care have the proper tools and experience necessary to examine these suspicious lesions and put your mind at ease. Call for a consultation today for evaluation and to determine the best treatment option for you!

By Lapinski Dental
I really needed a break this past winter. Lapinski Dental wasn’t scheduled for a vacation and I found myself - like so many of us around here - wondering if the winter in the Capital District was ever going away. I mean, it was pretty relentless. Then, an opportunity to attend an intensive course with the topic of “ treating patients with worn dentition”, and I thought, perfect timing for going back to school. Being able to learn from some of the most well known dentists in the country was exciting but I have to admit that doing do from sunny Arizona and it’s 90+ degree weather was a bonus. Yes, dentists go to school. Dr. Barile and I both make it a point to make continuing education an annual priority. We’re both members of monthly “study clubs” for complex cases and seek out hands on and lecure opportunities to make us better at our jobs. In NYS, dentists are required to have 60 hours of training completed each time we renew our license, which is every 3 years. In fact, I’ve taken over 750 hours of training since I completed my dental residency, proudly above the requirement. It’s really amazing how things have changed since I got out of school 25+ years ago. On the surface, dentistry seems like it’s been the same for ages, all flossing, drilling and filling. However, with technology, micro materials and computerization, that couldn’t be further from the truth. These days, the use of computers and lasers, intra-oral cameras, scanners, milling devices and digital x-rays are all becoming more common and the standard of care. Many of these are our essential tools in treating my patients with the best materials & the best solutions for them. Going “back to school” is not only refreshing but we get recharged too. It really helps us learn about what’s trending and new in the field of dentistry, but also how to come back and look at our everyday cases with a fresh eye on patient care and comfort. We see a full range of cases at Lapinski Dental: from the very basics of preventative treatment, cleanings, fillings & crowns to replacing missing teeth with prosthetics like implants and dentures, and orthodontic care with computer aided alignment. Each case, regardless of the complexity, ultimately needs to provide the patient with a functional and esthetic result. And sometimes, even after all of these years, you can teach an old dog a few new tricks (to clarify: I’m not referring to Dr. Barile as old, that’s me). Getting a little recharged along the way really helps us be better for you. I got home from that trip, excited about what I learned, and even more excited that the weather was getting warmer, the snow was gone and the people were smiling again. If only the rain would stop, then the smiles might get even bigger. And if you aren’t smiling, Hey, we can help you with that. If you’re having a dental concern, please tell your dentist or hygienist - we cannot help you if we don’t know. www.LapinskiDental.com email:DrJoe@Lapinskidental.com

When a Dog Seizes It can be frightening. Your beloved dog collapses and appears to be convulsing. Its body becomes rigid, its eyes wide but unseeing, legs stiffen and paddle uncontrollably. Afterward, your dog appears disoriented and is on the verge of panic. Your dog just had a seizure. Seizures are caused by an electrical activity overload in the brain. An episode can last for seconds or several minutes; it can be an isolated event or occur days, weeks or months apart. Episodes occurring one after another are called clusters. Seizures are classified in one of several categories: ·Focal is a partial seizure. In partial seizures, only one part of the body is affected. For example, the dog may suddenly start chomping as if chewing on a wad of gum. The dog may or may not lose consciousness. ·Grand mal is a generalized, intense seizure affecting the entire body. The dog loses consciousness and body control. Its body becomes rigid. It may thrash stiffen legs in a paddling motion. The dog’s jaws may be clenched open or closed; it may snap in a chattering fashion. Loss of bodily functions, such as vomiting, defecating or urinating, can occur. ·Psychomotor seizure is a form of a focal seizure, but the dog’s conscious awareness maybe affected. The dog may not recognize people, including family members; it may be disoriented, aggressive or appear to be hallucinating. For example, a dog experiencing a psychomotor seizure may repeatedly snap at the air as if at imaginary flies. There is no cure for seizures and they can afflict any dog. Tumors, toxins, brain abnormalities, and metabolic issues can cause them. The dog’s age may help with a diagnosis. Diseases, like canine distemper, and parasites, such as Toxoplasma, are often the reason for seizures in puppies under six months old. If the dog is over six months but under six years, seizures may be diagnosed as idiopathic epilepsy. This diagnosis is determined when the dog first seizes within this age range, no other cause can be attributed to the seizures, and the dog does not have any neurologic symptoms between seizures. If your dog seizes, there are several things you can do. Safety is first. During the seizure, do not put your hands or any part of your body near your dog’s mouth. A seizing dog may bite down on anything near its mouth. If your dog is in an open area, like a living room floor, and is not in danger of hurting itself, do not touch your dog. However, if the dog is in a location where it might injure itself (such as under a table or on a concrete floor), grasp a hind leg and gently move it to a safe location. Any dog having a seizure should be examined by a veterinarian as soon as possible, however, if your dog experiences cluster seizures or has one lasting two minutes or longer, it is a medical emergency. Immediately take your dog to a veterinarian. The body’s activity during a seizure will raise the dog’s body temperature, and it can quickly overheat. Without immediate medical attention, the dog may die or suffer permanent brain damage. If possible, record the seizure, and once the seizure is over, make note of as much information as possible, such as the time of day, seizure duration, activities before the seizure, etc. Detailed information and a video may help the veterinarian with the diagnosis. While a seizure can be frightening, with your veterinarian, you may be able to manage it and help your dog live a full life.

Alan A.Duraski, owner & operator | 518-852-6285 Kinderhook's History Comes Alive in Upcoming Book By Lisa LaMonica First inhabited by the Mohicans and settled before 1651, Kinderhook, New York, has an intriguing historical past. While the town has ties to the American Revolution and was home to America's eighth president, Martin Van Buren, Kinderhook is most known for being the origin of America's first ghost story, "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow." The story's main character, Ichabod Crane, was based on Washington Irving's close friend Jesse Merwin, a teacher who moved to Kinderhook in 1808. Due to the story's success and its terrifying icon, the Headless Horseman, Kinderhook and the Hudson Valley have evolved from farmland and sleepy folklore to an area full of cultural interest. Today, Kinderhook's celebrated art galleries and restaurants attract visitors and locals alike. Kinderhook is known to be one of the oldest towns in New York State and its significance to our nation's history and culture can not be understated. One of our Presidents Martin Van Buren, resided in Kinderhook. The Kinderhook connection to Washington Irving and the prominence of his Legend of Sleepy Hollow is of significant literary importance; the book being considered one of the most important books to shape a nation. English explorer Henry Hudson is credited with discovering Kinderhook in September of 1609 where his ship the Half Moon remained anchored for four days. His sailing party were welcomed by the Mohicans; Mahicans as referred to by the Dutch. The natives gave the newcomers Indian corn, pumpkins and tobacco. Fortunately for us, Hudson's clerk Robert Juet kept meticulous entries in a daily journal. He wrote “We found very loving people and very old men and were well used.”His journals document the people and customs found in Kinderhook's early history among its original inhabitants. "History and folklore often intertwine in Kinderhook; for example, Martin Van Buren, the eight president of the United States, was born and is buried in Kinderhook, and he supposedly coined the term “OK,” which, according to local historians, originally stood for “Old Kinderhook.” And, needless to say, his presidential ghost reputedly haunts his old home of Lindenwold, which still stands just off Route 9H, not far from the original Ichabod Crane schoolhouse. Kinderhook is noted as one of the more haunted places in the Hudson Valley, which is saying quite a lot for an area inhabited by all manner of ghosts, ghouls and things that go bump in the night. After all, Washington Irving’s Headless Horseman rode through the Hudson Valley in pursuit of Ichabod Crane, just to from name one of the most famous examples of Hudson Valley folklore." the book's forward, by Kinderhook author Bruce G. Hallenbeck. My sixth book, Images of America:Kinderhook/Arcadia Publishing comes out August 2019. This book was a joy to write and compile with rare images included also. If you have a question about Kinderhook, feel free to email me at: lisalamonica@ yahoo.com and I may be able to answer it in my next article. I look forward to sharing history and images with you monthly on not only Kinderhook, but Niverville, Valatie and Stuyvesant.

Congratulations to the many Kinderhook businesses that took home 1st, 2nd and 3rd place prizes from Capital Region Living Magazine!! 1st Place – Kinderhook Bank, Golden Harvest Farms (Cider Donuts & Apple Orchard), The Cross Eyed Owl Gift Shop and Stewarts Shops (Coffee); 2nd Place – OKenny’s Express (Chili), Harvest Spirits Farm Distillery; and 3rd Place to Bagel Tyme, The Flammerie (German Food) and Chris’ Café (Soup). If you live In or Around the Town of Kinderhook, stop by one of our winning shops. Within the past few years, I’ve seen some amazing local young adults break sporting records. Many go on to competitive play after high school and inspire younger players following their steps. Here are some recent winners: Jair Gomez and Jerald Rhoades qualified for USAW National Championships. Ama Bonham (First ever Ichabod student to qualify for William F Eddy Jr meet, Champion for the 100m hurdles), and Gabbie Cox won the Girls Tier I 19U title at the 2019 Chipotle-USA Hockey National Championships. Softball coach Tracy Nytransky has led many great ladies to victory. Calista Phippen won as she led Tracy’s team to Class B state titles in 2015 and 2018. Calista recently won Marist Co-Rookie of the year. I love the energy and spirit Tracy brings to her teams each year. In April, Coach Tracy had her 300th career win. I wish I could mention all of our winners. The Ichabod Crane Varsity Club Spring Sports & Senior Award Ceremony is June 6 at 6pm at ICC High School.

The Angel Therapy Facial A customized facial for those undergoing cancer treatment.
I’m off to go pick up Nathan from his first year away at college and I’ve been waiting for this day for weeks. Like all things marked by time, it feels like he just left but also that he’s been away for so very long. I’m eager to have his presence back in the house, to replace the balance of things, to make us a foursome again, because if I’m being honest, our “new normal” trifecta is great but we miss him. Looking from the outside, trying to be objective, and from the random texts and face time conversations, he seems to have embraced this next chapter in most of the ways I would have liked him to, if these things were really up to me. The real transition wasn’t the answer to “Aww how do you think he’ll do going away to school?” and it wasn’t really about him at all. I have yet to meet an young adult that hasn’t figured out some of the basic truths in life, without mom to intervene, as much as I might like to have had that effect on the situation. It wasn’t all that long ago (well it kinda was but ) that I was in the same place, packing up my things in milk crates and laundry bags and checking off another year, hoping the grades reflected the last ditch studying all nighters. Actually Nate’s a way more evolved student than I ever was. He simply gets it, in a way that recognizes the importance of choosing to pursue education in this way, to take on some debt, to balance that with social fun and experiences and making it look easy. It’s funny, no matter how many “reminders” I send him, he only does what he really wants to do. I’m not naive. So, while I cling to the shreds of the #ReformingTigerMom that wants to ensure his success, somewhere along the line, I had to realize for myself that I was gently being relieved of that responsibly. So back to the lessons learned from freshman year. In hindsight, the real conundrum was how do I, we, transition to life with a college student and in turn, learn to parent a very different human from the one we dropped off in the waning days of summer?

Today, I’m on my way to get a young man that has met new friends, navigated some situations not worthy of a parents confidence, and joined some clubs. He’s eaten more than his share of late night wings and diner meals, played some fantasy football and joined a fraternity. He’s kept in touch with high school friends and had to let a few more go their own way. He’s traveled, slept in and is somehow coming home with excellent grades and money in the bank. This kid doesn't need us the way he once did, the way we still need him. It makes me beam with pride and sniffle with nostalgia. That little boy in a baseball helmet that is maybe just a little too big now sporting a unshaven face and college credits. Letting go whole holding on has been the hardest lesson of this first year. One I am still learning, that I am sure will evolve.
FREE HAIRCUT
And, I’ll take the crumbs of parenting thrown my way. I’ll check him into the airlines and complete the FAFSA, I’ll update his resume, schedule a haircut and even make all the suggestions my experiences and vision can muster, when he looks up from his phone.
WITH ANY COLOR SERVICE! ($25 VALUE)
Ultimately, all I can do is show up. Today, it’s with a stack of empty suitcases and a rental car, and tomorrow it might be with well, who knows. Regardless, the tables have turned a little, the student becomes the master in this scenario and it’s exactly the curriculum I signed up for.

Ask the Audiologist By Madison Hearing Center
Q: TEST YOUR EARS AT 60 YEARS!! A :Trying to navigate how to go about improving their hearing can be a complicated task for the average person. There are many paths on the way to hearing healthcare, and some are confused by the differences and unsure of the path to take.
Dr. Chris Raffo, AuD Everyone knows they should get a colonoscopy at age 50, and females should be screened for breast cancer at 40, but what about a baseline age to evaluate hearing acuity? Studies now prove that hearing health = brain health, and that untreated hearing loss, even when mild, has a negative impact. FACT: According to an analysis published in the Annual Review of Public Health, 30% of individuals ages 61-70, and more than 80% of individuals over 85, have significant hearing loss that affects communication abilities. This makes hearing loss one of the most common health problems for older individuals. Consider this: driving home on a clear, sunny day is easy and relaxing. Driving home on the same road with the same car in an ice storm can leave you fatigued. Hearing loss is like the ice storm; it transforms your everyday conversations into a challenge for your brain.
So who is the individual specifically trained for the diagnostic evaluation of hearing? Whose testing is recognized as medically accurate, not only for determining the degree of hearing loss, but also for measuring how it is affecting your communicative ability, especially amid noise, and determining if the loss is correctable by medical intervention or through hearing aids? Enter the audiologist! This is the individual who has been professionally trained with a doctorate degree to be sure the questions above are answered accurately, and appropriate measures are taken to improve your ability to understand your friends, family, religious services, lectures, "Your Garden Center" TV, movies,Hometown etc. Hearing well essentially impacts every aspect of your life.

Our Towne Welcomes
Windy Hill Orchard-East
For the past 109 years, the 106 acre property along Brookview Station Road in Castleton has been known as Goold’s Orchards. In May, the property was purchased by brothers Scott and Todd Seeberger, residents of the Castleton-Schodack area who own Windy Hill Orchard and Farm Market in Cassville, about a half hour's drive south of Utica. Goold’s Orchards will now be known as Windy Hill Orchards East. The property, consisting of 13,000 trees and breathtaking views, will continue to be a working apple farm and host to many family friendly events through the year. Scott Seeberger, owner of Northeastern Apple Sales, has been marketing New York State Apples, representing growers for the past 12 years. Owning an orchard was the next step in the overall plan of expanding their “legacy.” In June 2015, Windy Hill Orchard and Farm Market (WEST) was established. These brothers jumped at the opportunity to expand the family business in the community where Scott & Todd were raised & live with their families and were thrilled to purchase Goold’s Orchard in the town they call home. When Windy Hill Orchard (WHO) East opens in late summer it will look and feel very different. Scott and Todd want to make the farm a welcoming place where the community can come take a walk, have a picnic and enjoy the beautiful landscape that they have absolutely fallen in love with. They want to make the experience at Windy Hill Orchard affordable and will be offering many new events and opportunities in the coming year. One tradition that will continue is the Apple Festival Weekend…SAVE THE DATE: October 5th & 6th 2019, is the 1st Annual Apple Festival. There will be lots to do at a lower cost: many varieties of apples to purchase and pick, pumpkins, bounce houses, clowns/face painting from 12-5, wagon rides through the orchard, corn maze and of course many new and past craft vendors. There is no additional cost for the bounce houses, clowns/face painting, wagon rides and corn maze. Stroll through the farm store where you will find fresh baked cookies, apple turnovers, variety of fudges, pies, fresh pressed apple cider and of course our famous apple cider donuts. We also have many specialty items; homemade jams, relishes, pickles, apple sauces, specialty sodas, and aged cheddar cheese, to name a few. Large selection to peak everyone's interest along with many craft items. Want to be a new vendor or discuss selling a product in the store? Call (518) 365-9099 to inquire. Scott and Todd look forward to meeting the community later this summer and say “before leaving the farm store, grab a coffee on us and sit by one of our firepits. Enjoy relaxing and the smell of apple firewood burning in the air. Be sure to take that memorable picture by our photo areas with amazing views.” They are very excited to start new traditions with your family at 1297 Brookview Station Road in Castleton. LIKE Windy Hill Orchard East on Facebook for updates. "Start A Family Tradition" Happiness Grows Here.
