JULY 2012

EDITOR’s NOTE Dear Reader, When I was a kid summer time meant riding my bike around Castleton, swimming every day, going to the elementary school for rec (we were allowed to come and go as we pleased) and playing hide and seek at night with my friends. We played jump rope games, hopscotch...packed picnic lunches and ate them in the back yard. We went camping in the Catskills, and spent one glorious week on Cape Cod or at Mad River Glen in Vermont. Summer time was the best. I never felt bored or wanted to watch television (except “I Dream of Genie” reruns in the afternoon), and no one had home computers or even cable. We made our fun using our imagination. I remember spending hours choreographing dance numbers to Mickey Mouse Club songs with my best friend Lisa C. Then we would invite neighbors and parents to watch the show on my front steps. Even though my own children have a lot of distractions with iPod’s, computers, Kindles and cable, I still see them spending hours using their imaginations. I am thankful my kids still receive the gift of summer vacation, with its hours and hours of freedom. I love it when they surprise me with a new game they invented or something they built, or when out of the blue they clean their rooom and reorganize their toys without being asked. (Well, there’s always hoping- right). As always, enjoy this issue & tell our advertisers you saw them in OUR TOWNE!! Thanks Debbie Gaylord, Publisher

Great Summer D ay Tr i p s CLOSE... CLOSER.... CLOSEST!

by Nancy Shanley of AAA of t h e H u d s o n Va l l e y

LAKE GEORGE, NY

Need to get away for just one day? Here are three options not too far away.

CLOSE Lake George, NY Drive time from Troy: about one hour

arrange a tour. A tip to help you plan an enjoyable tour: there is a rest room on shore, but none on the ship. Hours and information: www.ussslater.org Docked on the Hudson River Intersection at Broadway and Quay Streets, Albany 518-431-1943

If you’re looking for a great destination with a variety of activities, choose Lake George. Sun worshipers will want to spend some time at the Million Dollar Beach. Plus, don’t miss a scenic ride on an authentic PaddleWheeler, the Minnie-Ha-Ha.

CLOSEST

Back on land, spend some time at the outlet stores in town. When you’re done shopping and ready for excitement, head to The Great Escape and Splashwater Kingdom Six Flags Park. One ticket covers all rides and water slides.

A museum? EEEWW! That’s no way to spend a summer day! Don’t worry, THIS museum is different. There are plenty of hands-on exhibits. Kids can visit “Light, Optics and Vision” to learn about light and experiment with optical effects.

It’s an easy trip to Lake George. Pack some patience for when you get there though. Like many summer hot stops, the main road gets busy. Watch for outlet shoppers crossing the road too! Pack comfy shoes and sunscreen.

Another must-see exhibit is “Weather Front” where little ones can do their own forecast in front of a green screen, just like the pros! A visit is not complete without a trip to the “Butterfly House” to learn about the lifecycle of these majestic little creatures.

More information: www.visitlakegeorge.com www.lakegeorgesteamboat.com www.sixflags.com/greatescape

CLOSER USS Slater, Albany, NY Drive time from Troy: about 20 minutes History buffs can tour the only World War II Destroyer Escort still afloat today: the USS Slater. Deck by deck tours begin about every 20 minutes. The USS Slater website promises that you’ll “Experience the teamwork, attention to detail, and honor that are crucial to the safety of sailors and your ship.” Note that tours are given rain or shine. Walkways can be tight and you’ll want to wear non-slip shoes. Anyone with mobility issues or subject matter requests is encouraged to call ahead to 4

JULY 2012

The Children’s Museum of Science and Technology (CMOST) Drive time from Troy: it’s right in town!

There are a lot more fun exhibits, plus animal shows, planetarium shows and workshops throughout the day. Even better, you don’t have to fight traffic at all to get here. CMOST is right in your backyard. Hours and information: CMOST in the Rensselaer Tech Park 250 Jordan Road, Troy, NY 12180 518-235-2120 www.cmost.org

AAA members can get custom TripTik directions and discounted Great Escape tickets at any office or at AAA.com. CMOST also offers AAA members a buy one get one free ticket offer at the box office with a valid AAA card, one free admission per visit.

Beautiful Water Features Create an Oasis at Home by Steve Noel Water Features add tranquilit y to your property and incr ease your property value. Incorporating a one of-a-kind stream (as pictured) or pond in your landscape can sig nificantly enhance your outdoor space whether it is a yard, porch or patio area. It will create a f ocal point while attrac ting wildlife and drowning out unwanted background noises. There are two types of water features, pond and pondless: A pondless type is simply a re-circulating waterfall and stream without the maintenance of a pond. The pond option is best for those willing to spend a little mor e time creating a small ecosystem. It can include fish, frogs, salamanders, and aquatic plants. Both water features allow you to enjoy soothing sights and sounds. They give you the opportunity to relax and distress from today’s busy world in the comfort of your own backyard. For more information on water features or to create your own customized oasis, contact Steve Noel at AZlandscaping.com or call 423-0611.

The Sounds of Summer by Daryl Bart

Back in the spring, I heard it for the first time this year, the unmistakable sound of summer arriving. Allison came running in yelling , “Ice Cream Man!!! Can I have Ice Cream Man?” I’m guaranteed to hear this request every day for the next 4 months, as the distant melody comes closer. No matter which song is playing, Yankee Doodle, the Entertainer, Greensleeves, the music is always a little off, a little sick sounding, but it nev er fails to make me smile . A r eminder of one day, back in my uber-poor, very sparse college days, when I was given an offer I couldn’t refuse, to be the Ice Cream Man. A friend called t o say the leftover ice cream from his summer route had to be sold and if I could help, I could keep profit. Words to my ears. Without skipping a beat, I said yes and made plans for the next day. I showed up to a note taped to the door that read “Sorry, Family Emergency, Follow map, Truck needs gas, Unplug from house, thanx!” My orientation was over. I used my last $5 for gas, found the X on the map, flipped on the music switch and started driving this big huge loud whit e truck. I went several blocks with nothing. Not a person, not a wave, and bo y, was I ner vous. What had I gotten myself into? Then it happened. There was a family waiting patiently at the curb half a block ahead. Well, the adults seemed patient but the kids were jumping up and down in a pseudo-frenzy. They ordered as I rummaged thr ough icy cardboard boxes and started to make sense of the contents. I made my first sale and knew that my rent was only a few (hundred) bomb pops, sno-cones and chocolate eclairs away. Things got easier after that. I got into a groove. I was excited. My confidence was building and so I tossed the map, enjoyed the beautiful sunny day and relied on my own sense of direction. Even though I had lived here for 4 years, I was seeing, really

seeing Albany for the first time. I found tree lined streets, row houses and urban apartment projects. I drove through areas dominated by college students and gentrified areas with carefully manicured lots and lawn ornaments. I saw beautiful homes near the hospitals that I hoped I could live in one day, and warehouse areas nestled behind the busy avenues. I drove through Washington Park, ignoring the sign saying “no commercial vehicles” and gleefully watched as hoards of children came running from all directions. I felt lucky on so many levels. Sure it would make a great story to tell. But I got to know the city I would call home; I felt relief for the serendipitous opportunity to make some money when I really, really needed it, but a local blog most of all, I think I felt a sense of connection after meeting the Schodack Castleton Everyday News & Events people in the city I would call home and a confidence in trying An online publication something new that up until yesterday I didn’t know I could do (It was a very big truck). S o as Allison c omes running “Can I ha ve money f or Ice Cream?” And I hear the melodic version of “pop Goes the Weasel” heading m y way, for the thir tieth time this y ear, I smile , Catherine Sager, Managing Editor and remember that long ago da y, rummage for some money say “get me one t oo”. I mean r eally, who doesn’t love the Ice (518) 732-0382 Cream Man? catherine.sager@yahoo.com

Effortless Summer Beauty By: Nicole Wagner, Nicole’s Mobile Spa

Here are some simple tips f or effortless summer beaut y, in under ten minutes. Apply your favorite tinted moisturizer to your face. 1.

2.

3.

4. 5. 6.

Use cream blush, and apply t o the apples of y our cheeks and blend out and up t oward your hairline. Pinks, peaches and corals look great for summer. This can also be used on lips. Grab a matte bronzer, and lightly dust all o ver with a big fluffy brush. Using a smaller brush, apply br onzer to your temples, the hollows of your cheeks and your jaw line. Apply a light neutral shadow just below your brow, at the inside corners of your eye and top of your cheekbones and blend. My favorite is Universal Beige from Sephora. Take a darker matt e shadow, and apply t o the crease of your eye. Think browns or bronze. Apply a translucent powder with a lar ge fluffy brush to set. Add a little mascara and you’re done

Transforming this look for night is just as easy. 1. 2.

3. 4.

Freshen your bronzer, powder and lips. Add a pop of c olor to your eyelid. The hot colors for this summer are tangerine, green, blue, pink, or purple. Think light and bright. Re-apply your darker color to the crease if needed. Smudge some eyeliner above your top lashes in brown or gray, and you are out the door. Try to stay away from shimmers that can make sk in look greasy, and shimmer bronzer can make you look orange, not tan. Matte colors are best for summer skin.

EATING LOCAL NATURAL FOODS FOR YOUR HEALTH by Laura Higgins of The Living Well

In Michael Pollan’s book ‘In Defense Of Food’, he states” Eat real food, not too much, mostly plants.” What better time than summer to adopt this philosophy. We have an abundance of wonderful farms and farmers markets, many of whom provide us with sustainably grown fruits and vegetables and pasteur raised, well cared for animal products. Fast and/or processed food is not real food; rather a food like substance that masquerades as food. They are calorie rich and nutritionally poor so our bodies continue to search for nutrition leading us to eat more and more while feeling worse. The same is true of exercise. Our bodies are built to move but if it’s a chore and a bore that we abhor at best we will abandon the exercise and at worst it will cause damage. Summer is a great time to get out and play. Exercise programs that work do so because there is no work. Pools and parks are great places for playful exercise so this summer eat well and play well so you will feel well, be well and live well. Make “The Living Well Your Path To Living Well” (ad pg. 33)

Word of Mouth

by Joseph Lapinski, DDS

Dear Dr. Lapinski: I’m missing 2 molars. My old dentist talked about implants or partial denture. I’m only 42 and don’t know what’s the right thing to do? There was a big cost factor. Peter R. Rensselaer

Dear Peter: The first step in any big dental plan is an evaluation with options that give both pros and cons, like you have had. Filling in the spaces helps keep teeth aligned, makes chewing easier and completes your smile. There are several factors to consider when choosing the ideal option, including price, which teeth are involved, improving function (chewing), esthetics, and time. After considering these factors you have basically 3 main ways to replace missing teeth. Partial Denture: A removable appliance is often the most cost effective and good option if you are trying to replace several teeth in the same arch (all upper or all lower). The partial is made to fill in the missing teeth and quickly restore your smile. There is often an adjustment period since you “wear” it and take it out daily. You often need to have certain teeth present to be used as anchors to hold the partial in place and ensure it is functional enough to eat with. Fixed Prosthetics: A bridge is a great option if you have stable teeth on either side of the space, but usually is not an option if you are missing the very last tooth in the arch. For one-several missing teeth, a bridge spans the gap. It’s a single unit made of 2 crowns supporting the false tooth (pontic) and is cemented permanently in place. Newer ceramic materials allow for very beautiful natural looking replacements for both front and back teeth, eliminating dark lines. General & Cosmetic Dentistry Implants: Small titanium screws placed in the jaw bone, heal over 3-6 months, act like the root of a missing tooth and are used to support crowns or bridges that are cemented permanently in place, is very secure, and solves the problem withProviding heathly, beautiful smiles out affecting the adjacent teeth. Plus, titanium can never decay. for your entire family As always, please discuss your concerns with your dentist or hygienist. We can’t help you or treat the problem if we don’t 114 Troy Road ~ East Greenbush, NY know about it. Refer to ADA.org for many dental topics.

A MESSAGE FROM THE VET ~ Dr. David Stone, DVM

Comfort

by Dr. David Stone, DVM It is our first want. After all of our principle needs are addressed, comfort tops our want list. Daily, and in many different situations/conversations (often with vastly different implications), I hear the w ords--"I just want him t o be c omfortable, Doc." Sometimes you're telling me tha t I should go ahead and pr escribe the pain reliever for your dog's sprained ankle, and sometimes y ou're telling me to euthanize your clearly suffering dog who w as just hit b y a car. You use the same e xact words. Our lives are about in terpretation-- intent is everything. The clarity with which y ou express your intent within that phrase is important but I suspect the situational and social aspects dictate a certain expected norm of intent. Maybe that's why I sometimes find it confusing. For instance, I tell someone they should k eep their dog on hear tworm prevention year-round and they say, "I just want to keep him comfortable, Doc." and I don't know what to think...or I say, "we have enough blood for the test and I'd like to run it, what do you think?" and you say "I just want him to be comfortable, Doc." Again, I'm at a loss--I suspec t that by redirecting me with a nonsequit or, you're inferring that you do not, for whatever reason, wish to deal with the question I'm posing. I take it as a no. Sometimes, despite my suspicion that you mean "no", I will go ahead and ask--"Do you want me to run the bloods?" To which most r eply either "yes" or "no". Occasionally a person will go for the double nonsequitor and say something like, "So you think that food's any good?" That will make me smile and it's a clear "no ." Good communication, that's the heart of any good relationship...Yesterday I diagnosed a clien t's dog with bone canc er. The worst/most painful kind. The kind that spreads before the diagnosis is even made..The dog was limping severely and needed help getting up. I told the owner that meds will help somewhat but the only way to really relieve the pain was to amputate the leg or euthanize his dog. He looked at me as tears rolled down his eyes and said, "I just want him to be comfortable, Doc." The concept of the phrase is odd. Comfortable means 'comfy--happy and relaxed and pain free' not 'able t o be comforted' as the w ord suggests. Likewise, uncomfortable means 'not comfy--unhappy and stressed and painful.' and does not mean 'unable t o be comforted' as the word would suggest, or possibly the word suggests, 'not able to be able to be comforted.' Whatever, it's odd the way we use it. Comfort is a gray zone...it involves more than just relief of pain. O ccasionally I will prescribe a steroid for back pain. Sometimes it takes longer than the expected 3-7 day recovery time. Often the steroid makes the patient drink and pee more. It's a peculiar position when an o wner says "I just w ant him comfortable, but I can' t tolerate the urine, so I discontinued his meds. Now he's uncomfortable again...what should I do?" Now it's the owners comfort that we're attending to. I think that's valid. Sometimes only way for an animal to be comfortable results in the owners being uncomfortable... we can justify staying up one night with our sick pet, then being out of sor ts at work the next day. Mild suffering. How do you justify cleaning up carpets soaked with urine every single day? It’s all about hope and prognosis. If the problem has a suggested end date, you will suffer for a while with your pet. If your dog is in kidney failure and is urinating all over, and hope is gone, the story is different. You are tired from working and just want things to be okay/normal. Here you are with a house reeking like urine and 24

JULY 2012

carpets that are becoming more ruined with each passing day. You are losing property value. Comfort has wide arms and is inclusive of all involved in a situation. F ew scenerios…4 year old dog--overweight Labrador --comes into the hospital holding up his back leg. I feel/stretch/manipulate leg and announce he has a broken ACL (ligament inside the knee join t). I go in to a talk about c onservative vs. surgical management. You announce that you just want him comfortable. I giv e you some pain/inflammation medications and tell you to rest him and cut his food in half (overweight is a problem for these patients—too much pressure on the knee). You tell me that he’s hard to rest because he has 3 acres to roam to go to the bathroom. I tell you to put a leash on him and c ontrol his outdoor rambunctiousness. You tell me you’ll try—but that the food thing will be difficult because everyone in the house gives him treats and he has those begging ey es…then you say you’ll try. Two weeks later you come in for a recheck/follow-up and I see that he has actually gained a pound and that he is 3 legged, carrying his hind leg off the ground as he walks. You tell me that you were successful for a few da ys keeping him quiet, and that the pain meds seemed t o be working initially, but that he saw a squirrel in the back y ard, ran after it, and now is back to where he started. I ask how he chased the squirrel while on a leash—then drop the question as you don’t seem to have an answer. I reiterate the treatment options…surgery…you ask about a leg brace or something stronger for the pain. I tell you about my experience with leg braces for ACL injuries and that most complete ACL tears are only corrected with surgical intervention. I just want him comfortable, Doc… I tell you that his comfort will cost $1200-3000 depending on the sur gical technique used. You tell me that you couldn’t possibly afford the surgery, and that the timing isn’t right anyway because your family is going on a cruise in a few weeks and surgery would conflict. Can’t you just increase his pain meds, Doc? Sure…and we can add an additional medication too—but until the leg is stabilized…until the weight is lost… until the dog is aggressively rested…we won’t win this battle. I just want him comfortable, Doc… Lady brings in her cat. This is an old cat…ancient. Lady says the cat is drinking and peeing and losing weight and is not ea ting well. I examine the old guy, run a blood test, and announce that he is in kidney failure. I just want him comfortable, Doc. I tell you that to the best of our kno wledge, kidney failure is not painful. Perhaps he feels nauseous and tired, but he’s probably not feeling anything remotely painful. Dehydration is a lousy w ay to die, and that’s his biggest threat. How could he be dehydrated when he’s drinking so much w ater…? Look at the litterbox—soaked! His kidneys are not keeping water for the body because the filter has too many holes in it…so to speak. I tell you that the easiest way to ensure that he doesn’t dehydrate is to give him fluids at home—under his skin with a needle and IV bag …this is the tricky par t… you are pale. There is no way you will be able to poke your cat with a needle. I look at the old man and suggest I demonstr ate the process for you. Your cat sits there while I pop the needle in and deliv er the fluid. In about 2 minut es I’m done and y our cat doesn’t seem to have noticed. Still an unbeliev er, you take the old man home t o observe. Three days later you call to give me an update. You were shocked at how much more energy and vitality he had for the few days after your appointment, but now he seems to be slowing down and hiding again. I suggest tha t you bring him back and have a technician redemonstrate and teach you to give the fluids yourself at home…I just want to make him comfortable, Doc, but there’s no way I can stab m y cat. Then don’t. Either w atch him dehydrate, become completely toxic, and die. Or, euthanize him. I would never do that, Doc! Then get over your fear and give him the fluids. I can’t do that. Then bring him in t wice weekly and we’ll do it. How much does tha t cost? Around $20 per session. That’s too expensive…I just want him comfortable, Doc. I don’t know how to help you, but I’ll keep trying.

Purrfect Kitty of the Month

ISAAC -PLEASE ADOPT ME! Isaac is a shor thaired, sleek, black kitty, now 7 years old. He started life as a scared, homeless kitten and was wary of people. He has been at our shelter for at least 5 years! People pass him by because he is shy and not as outgoing as some of our other ca ts, but we know that when a person takes time to gain his trust (as we volunteers have done), he is incredibly affectionate and loves to be petted. Isaac is gr eat company for other cats as he is submissiv e and gets along well with them. Isaac needs a quiet home with people who are patient enough to get to know him. Please consider giving Isaac the forever home he deserves and has waited so long for! As with all P urrfect Companion kitties, Isaac is up-to-date on routine shots, house trained and neutered or spayed. F or more information on Isaac, please contact the following Purrfect Companions’ representative: Maryann at 331-2221 or at kitties.purrfectcompanions@yahoo.com. Purrfect Companions is a non-profit, all volunteer rescue organization. We are always looking for good v olunteers to help with the kitties or assist a t our adoption clinics. If you’d like to donate a little time t o these worthy animals, please give us a call at 463-8709. Our adoption clinics are held 12:30-4:00 most Saturdays and Sundays at Petco, Northway Mall, Albany NY. Stop by and see some of our other kitties! We may have one that is just “PURRFECT” for you!

The HUB for Local Summer Camp & Enrichment Discovery Place Learning Center Our Summer Enrichment Program features fun, playbased learning activities centered on weekly themes. Children ages 24-months to six years of age (or those entering First Grade) are welcome to attend. Activities are designed so children of different ages can participate together but at age-appropriate learning levels. Each theme is led by a Master’s level teacher or professional. 479-1110 www.discoveryplaceny.com The Sidney Albert Albany JCC Center Camps from June 11 to August 31 offers an outdoor adventure experience during the summer. Our three summer day camps cater to children ages 3 to 15, filling e ery day with activities, friendship and fun! Our spectacular facilities include the gym, outdoor pool, fields and p vilion at the Center, as well as offsite locations at beautiful Gravel Pond in Grafton , NY ( Camp Olam ) and at Warner’s Lake in East Berne, NY (Teen Camp). Children improve their physical skills with swimming, boating, water skiing and ropes courses; they develop positive social skills and self-esteem as they select daily activities, and collaborate with other campers in individual and whole camp events. They learn about their heritage through song and dance, blessings over food and Shabbat programming. They grow and learn while forging friendships and positive attitudes that last a lifetime. We count among our camp alumni several board members, staff and other ommunity leaders, who credit Center camps with transforming their young lives, and whose children have continued the traditions as SAAJCC campers and counselors! 438-6651 www.saajcc.org YMCA of EAST GREENBUSH & TROY - This summer, thousands of kids will enjoy camp at the Capital District YMCA.
