SOUTHERN RENSSELAER & NORTHERN COLUMBIA COUNTIES

July 2014

Dear Readers, Happy Summer! Now that school is out for the year, our family can take a deep breath and relax! I am sure anyone with children can relate that all of the wonderful spring events are plentiful, momentous...and exhausting. Ahhh...Now we can chill out, de-stress and enjoy some free time. This summer, we decided to take our family to the Jersey Shore for our family vacation. We normally head up to New England; but I am tired of not being able to feel my toes in the freezing water. Amusement rides, boardwalks, boogie boarding, shopping, sand & sea shells are on the horizon! Amen! We are going to unplug, re-connect and enjoy the moment. I can’t wait! This issue is filled with lots of calendar events, advertisers who need your support, and coupons. There are many camps & programs for the kids around Our Towne. It’s not too late to set up a special experience for the kids. The calendar listings have tons of free activities for the kids & adults in July. You absolutely don’t have to spend a lot to have fun. I hope you will see that throughout the magazine. I hope you have a safe and fun 4th of July. Please be sure to Like Our Towne Rensco on Facebook. I send out news, promotions and events that are going on in Our Towne! Thank you for reading. Be safe & be greatJennifer

THE OUR TOWNE SPOTLIGHT SHINES ON... OKENNY’S EXPRESS After preparing his sauces and marinades for family and friends for a number of years, Ken Van Allen decided to take his delicious concoctions to the marketplace. Starting as a small operation in the family kitchen in 1996, OK Food Products, Inc. has grown steadily over the last few years. They now distribute products all over the country. Beef jerky was added to the line about a year after the sauces and marinades were introduced, and took off immediately for the stratosphere. Popular with hunters and non-hunters alike, OK barbecue sauces and meat marinades compliment meats such as venison, beef, pork and chicken. The beef jerky makes for a tasty treat while hunting wild game or anytime.

Finding success in retail, he decided to open a restaurant in his home town where he could incorporate his recipes and products into reasonable, American fare dishes. Established in December of 2003, O’Kennys Express was born from a desire by Kenny Van Allen to run a restaurant, doing something he loved for money. Located about 1 mile south of the Rensselaer & Columbia County border, at 3321 Route 9 in Valatie, they have attracted quite the following of loyal customers from southern Rensselaer & Northern Columbia Counties. O’Kennys Express is a full service, casual sit down restaurant that also offers a very popular ice cream window for the spring and summer months. The menu is expansive and should please anyone looking for some great American food. The menu includes the ever popular roast beef sandwich, salads, hot dogs & hamburgers (with chili & cheese toppings), many wraps, sandwiches, homemade soups, chicken, fries, desserts‌ now consider pairing it with a milkshake. They offer lunch & dinner specials that you can easily be notified of if you like them on Facebook. OKenny’s is a great place to eat year round; but especially popular in the spring & summer with the delicious creamy ice cream. Did I mention the Classic Car Shows? OKenny’s Express is just as well known for their car shows as they are for the great food & ice cream. During the spring & summer months, they host a Cruise-In on the first and third Tuesday of each month during May, June, July & August. Twice a year they have a Springtastic & Falltastic Car Show on the weekend. Mark your calendar, as the next one is Sunday, October 5th from 10-3. There are trophies, music, classic cars, good friends, ice cream & food specials! When you stop in for a good meal & ice cream, take a look at Kenny’s Classic Car collection. His museum is on the property and shows off his own collection of hot rods, classic cars, motorcycles & tractors. OK Foods will also cater parties, picnics, BBQs or any special event with “down home cookin.â€? The Roast Beef is famous and the ribs are incredibly delicious. They also offer antipasto, cole slaw, macaroni salad, potato salad, baked beans, baked ziti, meatballs in marinara sauce and sausage in marinara sauce.

Don’t Miss the Cruise-In July 1st & July 15th

WANTED: Students entering 8th grade The Greenbush Y proud to introduce a new Youth Leadership Development Program for students entering 8th grade in the fall of 2014. Follow Me is a program will offer young adults with the opportunity to develop important social, emotional, leadership & interpersonal skills. You do not need to be a member of the YMCA to take advantage of this year long program. The group will meet twice a month in the evening at the Greenbush YMCA. During each meeting, the group will be educated on a topic, participate in a group activity and then have some fun. It is a great opportunity to make new friends (from their current school or other local school districts). Some of the topics to be explored: Who am I?, Goal Setting, Making a Good First Impression, Work Ethic, Communication Skills, Active Listening, Conflict Resolution, Social Media Etiquette (Pros & Cons), Self- Advocacy, Stress Management, Healthy Relationships, Community Service & Volunteering & Wellness and Fitness. The program is about giving children confidence, setting goals, building relationships, and making a difference in their schools and communities. This program might be the boost a child needs to help them branch out and learn something new. The Greenbush Y is committed to offer programs which build healthy spirit, mind and body for all. Follow Me is a very exciting program that invests in our future leaders. Please refer students today. If you know a older young adult who would be interested in a similar program, the YMCA also sponsors a High School Achievers Program. We are looking to start the program in the Fall of 2014. Please contact Ross Jordan at 477-2570 at the Greenbush YMCA to inquire or sign up.

FIVE WAYS TO USE LICENSE PLATES, ROAD SIGNS AND BILLBOARDS TO ENCOURAGE READING By Heather Silvernail and Kathleen Lisson

As the weather gets warmer, local families can use their daily walking time to encourage literacy. Opportunities to practice reading skills are everywhere, even on the way to school or running errands on the weekend. 1.Invite children to read road signs like STOP, Yield, No Right Turn, Keep Right as well as electronic signs. 2.Encourage children to play with words like STOP to discover rhyming words, like top, crop and plop. Yield rhymes with field and wield. Right rhymes with might and light. Q: What’s red, white, blue, and green? A: A patriotic turtle!

3.Use words that children read on road signs as a starting word for an alliteration game. Challenge them to think of other words that start with the same sound. Keep starts with K and so does kangaroo and candy.

Q: What did one flag say to the other flag? A: Nothing. It just waved!

4.Practice saying the letters on road signs to increase recognition of upper and lower case letters, and

Q: How is a healthy person like the United States? A; They both have good constitutions! Q: What dance was very popular in 1776? A: Indepen-dance! Q: Teacher: “Where was the Declaration of Independence signed?” A: Student: “On the bottom!” Q: Did you hear the one about the Liberty Bell? A: Yeah, it cracked me up! Q: What did King George think of the American colonists? A: He thought they were revolting! Q: Do they have a 4th of July in England? A: Yes. That’s how they get from the 3rd to the 5th.

5.Review the alphabet by trying to find the letters of the alphabet, in order, in the road signs, license plates and billboards you see on a walk or car trip. If your family tries any of these activities, please share your experiences with us by emailing juniorleagueoftroy@gmail.com Find out more about the Junior League of Troy at http://jltroy.org. Heather Silvernail is a literacy specialist and a volunteer with the Junior League of Troy. Kathleen Lisson is a trained basic literacy tutor and volunteer with the Junior League of Troy.

Word of Mouth By Joseph R. L apinski, D.D.S. Dear Dr. Lapinski: My son’s dentist says he has a lot of wear on his teeth that he says is due to drinking sports drinks. Is this possible? By Nassau Veterinary Clinic, PLLC Cracking the Test – Deciphering your Pet’s Blood Chemistry Test Dogs and cats can’t talk. Figuring out what’s ailing your furry friend may take blood, as in tests. Those tests are little windows into how your pet’s body is functioning. They may help to detect hidden illnesses because sometimes even healthy-looking pets can have underlying diseases. A blood test is also used before giving your pet anesthesia, so we can avoid problems. As your pet ages, a blood chemistry test may serve as a baseline to be used as a reference. Understanding the results can be confusing. Here’s a brief guide into what your veterinarian is seeing on those tests. •Complete Blood Count (CBC) – White blood cell count may indicate stress, inflammation, infection or some diseases. It also may indicate an inability to fight infections. Platelet numbers may suggest possible bleeding. •Alanine Aminotransferase (ALT) – ALT level may be associated with liver cell injury. •Albumin (ALB) – Produced by the liver, this protein’s level may indicate liver, kidney, intestine or inflammatory diseases. •Alkaline Phosphatase (ALKP) – Found in many body tissues like the liver and bone, elevated ALKP levels may be signs of liver disease or Cushing’s syndrome. •Amylase (AMYL) – Produced by the pancreas, its levels may indicate pancreatic disease. The pancreas produces AMYL to help with digestion. •Blood Glucose (GLU) – Diabetes, liver disease, infection and some tumors can affect GLU levels. In cats, high levels can be caused by stress while low levels may indicate liver disease, infection or some tumors. •Blood Urea Nitrogen (BUN) – Produced by the liver and expelled through the kidney, its levels can indicate dehydration, kidney or liver diseases. Low levels can also suggest liver disease. •Calcium (Ca+) – Some tumors or parathyroid gland and kidney diseases can affect Ca+ levels. •Cholesterol (CHOL) – Abnormal levels may be signs of hypothyroidism, liver or kidney disease. •Creatinine (CREA) – A byproduct of muscle metabolism and expelled through the kidney, its levels may reflect signs of kidney disease, blocked urinary tract or dehydration. •Phosphorus (PHOS) – Kidney disease may affect PHOS levels. •Total Bilirubin (TBIL) – Bilirubin is a breakdown product from hemoglobin and also a component of bile. Levels may identify types of anemia and indicate liver disease. •Total Protein (TP) – TP level may reflect a variety of conditions, including dehydration, inflammation and liver, kidney or intestinal diseases. •Sodium, Potassium, Chloride (Na+, K+, CI) – The balance of these electrolytes is fundamental to your pet’s health and irregular levels is a serious concern. Tests are vital when assessing vomiting, diarrhea, dehydration and heart signs.

To Stage, or Not To Stage? By Cathy Graziano

Home staging can make a world of difference when selling a home. The goal of home staging is to improve the home's appearance in the eyes of potential buyers. Many sellers attempt to stage their home themselves and, in doing so, create mistakes. Here are some of the biggest staging mistakes, according to professional home stagers. 1. Getting too personal: Home staging should create a neutral canvas that will appeal to the majority of buyers. Staging is about de-personalizing the space, and creating a model home look that will appeal to most everyone. This is not the time to create a look that appeals to just you. 2. Using dark colors: If painting, you should choose a nice, neutral and warm color, such as beige tones, grey tones. You will be amazed at the transformation a few coats of fresh paint will make on your home. 3. Not taking advantage of natural light: People love natural light, so blocking off any light with heavy curtains or furniture can hurt. 4. Thinking more is better: Scale down your furniture. The size of the furniture needs to be in balance with the size of the room. Remember that the purpose of furniture when selling a home is to define the purpose of the room and to show what will fit where. 5. Neglecting the outside: People care about the outside space just as much as the inside, so add flowers, make sure the lawn is mowed, edged & the yard is tidy. 6. Only dealing with “main” rooms: People are quick to stage living rooms, kitchens and bedrooms, but don’t forget to spruce up the garage, basement and closets as well. Create some empty space in closets, on shelves & in cabinets. 7. Forgetting fixtures: When staging a home, it is important to ensure all lights are burning with fresh bulbs, and that all fixtures are working. When you stage your home for the market, you will be looking at the home as if you were a buyer. Use staging to present your home in a way that appeals to the largest possible audience & will turn your house into a “WOW” house. Your Realtor can help you with some basic home staging or refer you to a professional Home Stager. Some do not even have to visit your home they will advise you via Skype! Our ultimate goal is selling the home more quickly and for the highest possible price.

“RECONCILIATION” Greg Ballard,Lead Pastor Grace Fellowship, Greenbush gballard@gracefellowship.com

When I was sixteen, I decided to leave home and take life’s challenges on my own terms. This wasn’t my best moment. I left behind a good home and a loving family. My actions caused pain and temporarily severed some valuable relationships. A few years later, my life took a sharp turn and I began to work on rebuilding some of those relationships. I opened my heart, shared my faults, and asked for forgiveness. It wasn’t easy. Some of those wounds took a lot of nursing to heal. And despite the healing, my choices as a teenager have left scars—some faint, some vivid— on my heart, and on the hearts of some special family members. Today, I enjoy much healthier relationships with my family. We get along, talk heart to heart, and have a high degree of love and trust between us. Those relationships are healthy today because of the power of reconciliation—making things right with someone. One of the clearest messages in the New Testament is about making relationships right. In fact, Jesus talked a great deal about relationships. He wants us to place a high priority on our relationships. But reconciliation takes two. Both parties need to desire to make things right. If anyone in my family wanted to hold a grudge against me after I owned my mistakes and asked for forgiveness, there would have been little more I could have done.

Dear Angie, I am 15, and all of my friends my age and a grade lower have their belly buttons pierced. I have been asking my mom for a very long time and she doesn't have a problem with it, but my dad does. He won't let me get it done because he doesn't want me looking like "trash" at this age. I don't want it to impress boys; I want it for my own beauty and to look good with a cute jewel to go with my summer outfits or bathing suits. They said to ask you if you think it's wrong to have a belly button pierced at the age of 15. Is it wrong? From, Taylor in Schodack

Over the past several months, I’ve written about the transformative power of the gospel or “good news” as it has so often been called. The gospel is about reconciliation. God desires a relationship with you and me, but we have separated ourselves from Him by doing things our own way The gospel is the story of how God took a step toward us by providing a way back through Jesus Christ. Are there any relationships in your life that need reconciliation? That need to be made right? Have you taken the first step? What about your relationship with God?

Grace Fellowship 73 Troy Road, East Greenbush, NY 12061 greenbush.gracefellowship.com Weekend Services every Sunday at 9AM & 11AM

Dear Taylor, I hate to say it but yes I agree with your father. I do feel 15 is too young for a belly button ring and you should wait till you are 18 when you can make better decisions. I know girls are doing things younger and younger but some things are worth the wait. I feel belly button rings are one of them. I think you need to ask yourself - Why you really want or need one? Is it to fit in or to look like your other friends? Remember you don't need a jewel to be beautiful and your outfits will look just as cute. You might actually be surprised how much more you are noticed by standing out as an individual! Good Luck~ Angie

Why Outdoor Living Spaces Work so Well

By Steven Noel For many of us who can’t wait to make it home after a long day at work, stepping outdoors into a private outdoor living space can be a welcome retreat. Outdoor living spaces can result in a warm and welcoming extension of the interior environment; a relaxing haven into one’s own landscape. It has become a seasonal family room, especially in our area off the country where we spend so much time indoors all winter. Traditionally, the favorite hangouts in the home have been kitchen and family rooms. Butt today, these extended living spaces and outdoor kitchens are taking over as favorite entertainment options as well as a gathering space for family. Homeowners may bring all the comforts of their indoor rooms – into outdoor multipurpose living spaces.

Fire Pits & Fireplaces

Nothing anchors an outdoor living room better than an authentic outdoor fireplace or fire pit. There is a certain romantic ambiance that surrounds it. The glow of the flickering flame invites you to sit down, relax and enjoy life. Fire features encourage conversation and soothe the soul. They provide warmth, light and relation. Deciding between a fire pit and fire place is an important decision when creating an outdoor living room. A fireplace is perfect for a few people to provide ambiance and encourage intimate conversation. It creates a cozy, romantic feeling. A fire pit is ideal for entertaining a group, providing 360 degrees of enjoyment and a campfire like environment encouraging storytelling, laughter and marshmallow roasting! (Yum!)

Water Features

It’s not only the beauty of moving water as a whole; it’s the peaceful sound of water that can wrap the outdoor living space together. Waterfalls, ponds, koi ponds provide the setting with tranquility and peace as they border a lounge patio for a beautiful view. Folks in the Capital region just can’t seem to get enough of the natural beauty of moving water with its therapeutic benefits. At AZ LANDSCAPING, when designing and installing water features, the goal is that they appear and sound completely natural. Mastering this art and creating spaces that are truly amazing is what we are passionate about it! Since communication is imperative when creating the perfect outdoor venue, we take special care to listen to clients, learn what they want and offer insight. Defining where the inside ends and the outdoors begin is as individual as the clients we design for. Formal, traditional, contemporary, natural. . . Each dictates its own direction fitting the style of the client and property. I look forward to meeting with you to discuss how we can extend your living space and create a beautiful oasis.
