The Our Towne Spotlight Shines On... J. Hunziker Paving
Serving upstate New York for more than 12 years, J. Hunziker Asphalt Paving values customers and takes pride in providing superior asphalt paving services. After working in the field for a few years, Jason Hunziker decided that it was time for him to start his own company. From East Greenbush, Jason bought his first truck at 24 years old. With a passion for his work and a strong work ethic, he has successfully grown his business in the Capital District and beyond. From his previous employers, he took the good & bad experiences and developed a company that now serves both residential & business customers. When I sat down to interview Jason, I could see that he is a very hard working man with a passion for what he does. He is focused on proving to customers that he is a legitimate, honest business that is not out to take advantage of the customer or provide lackluster asphalt services. “J. Hunziker is big enough to serve, and small enough to care.” His reputation in the paving business has allowed him to grow by leaps & bounds in the past few years. He is always reinvesting in his business; purchasing new trucks and equipment. They looked cleaner than my car on any day of the year. They looked like showroom trucks, and yet, they were out on a job the day before. A very proud and hard working man, he is now expecting his first child later in the year. Thrilled beyond belief, he is now feeling like this will be a family business and his legacy. Even more of a reason to be the most respected paver in the area. In addition to hundreds of valued residential customers, Jason has also recently paved commercial parking lots like Rosewood Gardens, Off Shore Pier, Latham Ford and River Ridge Assisted Living. Not to mention, in the past years he beautified the new Hannoush Jewelers Flagship store on Wolf Road, Joe’s Crab Shack in Latham, the Taco Bell in Lake George, the 99 Restaurant & various Dunkin Donuts in the Capital District. He is highly respected in the community, and lives right here in Our Towne. J. Hunziker specializes in Driveways, Parking Lots, Seal Coating, Basketball Courts, Excavating, Resurfacing, Digouts, & Decorative Concrete.
TESTIMONALS
As a builder, I have hired J. Hunziker Paving for numerous jobs. Jay is incredibly reliable, does what he promises for the price he agreed to. I have never been anything but satisfied with his work and would highly recommend him to anyone. I am looking forward to hiring him for my new home in the near future. Ed McCauley
What has led J. Hunziker Paving down this road of success? “We offer the highest quality services and know what it takes to meet your needs and surpass your expectations. Our team of professional and highly qualified staff, work hard to meet the customer's individual needs. With updated insurance, equipment and a record of being reliable, you won't be disappointed.” He encourages all customers to research your options before contracting or handing over money when doing any home improvement project. There are a lot of sketchy people out there looking to take advantage of customers. Jason has an A+ Better Business Bureau rating and reviews on Angie’s List. Our Towne is proud to highlight a local man with a successful local business! For quality and affordable paving services, call Jason today at 518-858-7917 for a free consultation and estimate!

My wife and I are currently restoring a Historic residential property and I can say that we have had some difficulty with contractors delivering on what they promise. When we stumbled upon our next project which consisted of a complete tear down and rebuild of our driveway we did our homework. We found Hunziker paving and I have to say that we couldn’t have been happier with the result! Owner operator Jason Hunziker came to the residence and completed a very detailed inspection and listened carefully as to what we wanted to achieve. We were given a fair price, but after that we were given so much more. Jason and his team arrived on time and were extremely organized and spent no time with their execution. The crew was very professional and polite. Safety was also on the forefront as reflective vests were worn and flaggers were present on the street. The overall product was perfection! I continue to get asked, “Who did your driveway?” from people in the neighborhood. Thank you again to Jason and his team for delivering on their promise. Word of Mouth By Joseph R. Lapinski, D.D.S. At a recent visit, I gave a patient a sample of Sensodyne toothpaste – they had mentioned they were experiencing periodic sensitivity to cold water and I noticed some mild recession. She was reading the label and said, “Why aren’t we supposed to use this for extended periods of time?” Generally, when I recommend a patient use a sensitivity protection toothpaste (i.e sensodyne), they are clearly experiencing it due to recession, which is one of the more common reasons for cold hot sensitivity. Recession is usually found in adult patients due to over-zealous and vigorous brushing or gum disease, where the gums recede and expose the root. Your roots don’t have any enamel to protect them, and gum tissue does not “grow” back once it has receded or been scrubbed away. The exposed area can be much more sensitive to temperature changes from air, eating and drinking. The active ingredient in most sensitivity protection toothpastes are designed to help with this situation, by essentially filling the microscopic tubules of the teeth and roots and help the tooth and the structure handle the temperature fluctuations and thus the sensitivity. This simple daily use remedy usually take a few weeks to work before a patient notices any significant changes in their symptoms. Many patients report an improvement and can maintain using the toothpaste for their symptoms or use on an as needed basis, since it is also common for sensitivity to come and go. However, the warnings and concerns on the side of the box are really to assist a patient who maybe hasn’t seen a dentist and is trying to figure out why they have sensitivity. If it isn’t recession as mentioned above, the other more common reasons for sensitivity are decay or a tooth fracture. With either of these cases the toothpaste will not help. The decay just gets deeper and the fracture gets bigger. These are situations that need to be evaluated and treated by a dental professional. Once you know for sure that the situation is the exposed root and not a decayed tooth. It’s ok to go ahead and use the toothpaste for the long term. Conversely – if it’s not root exposure or recession but a serious dental issue, seeing your dental professional is the recommended way to go. Class of 2015 By Daryl Bart dcbart1@gmail.com
I can still remember the exact moment, after enduring the long drive to Albany in a cramped car, and navigating the oddly symmetrical SUNY Albany campus, and after my dad ceremoniously said his hasty goodbyes and extracted promises to "call home" when and if I could find a public telephone or (yes no cellphones) when I felt it. – FREEDOM As a teen, I’d already spent a fair amount of time away from home, first travelling for weekends, holidays and summers to spend them with my Dad upstate and later at various sleep away camps. I had anticipated and practiced this feeling of independence and felt truly ready for it. I embraced it. It was an intense time that was equally thrilling & scary. I’d made a pact with myself to arrive at college, leave that high school drama behind (yes, high school was filled with drama back then too) and introduce the new and improved college version of myself to the world. I don’t know how this “epiphany” happened. Somewhere along the line I realized that my life was not all that easy, being a teenager was hard. I begrudgingly admitted to myself that, yes, my attitude had been mildly challenging to deal with, that choosing a major (or 4), a career, a roommate, learning how to study and work, balance life and expectations, tempt fate and explore the forbidden fruits, make choices and decisions that would make a huge impact on my future and do it all essentially alone, was A LOT. After one brief semester away, I felt the need to apologize to my parents, for supporting and encouraging me when I was no fun to talk to, for underachieving, and for being even a tiny bit defiant. I was sorry for shutting them out in the obnoxious and demanding way that only a 17 year old girl could do. I let them know that I understood that their advice and guidance was really in my best interest, even though I never wanted to be a lawyer like my mom wanted and still tells me today - probably because I am still a bit argumentative with her. My children are too young to hear about all of my teenage mistakes and successes. I’m not sure they will ever hear the real stories of missed trains, 3 card monte on the streets of nyc, being evicted when it wasn’t my fault, grateful dead concerts, spring break, fake ids, speeding tickets, getting fired, fights with friends, a bad grade or 2 (ok it was that first semester of freedom that did me in). But I’ll share the lessons in the form of edited highlights that will protect the not so innocent.

This past month I’ve been watching all of the posts from friends celebrating their children and grandchildren in graduations and advancements and felt like I wanted to, along with with my congratulations, offer a tiny bit of advice with the sincerity of a parent, with the eye of an employer and the heart of an entrepreneur and the memory of someone who has been there done that. It is simply this. Embrace this opportunity. Say YES more often - to trying, to risking opportunities, to challenges - no work is beneath you. It’s often more important to figure out what you don’t like then knowing for sure what you do. The things you like have a habit of sneaking in anyway. Skills are transferable from job to job, and since you’ll probably have several , become proficient in things….if nothing else, or that seems confusing, become great at Customer Service. The communication skills there will be necessary in every single facet of your life forever. No matter what you choose to do, be it a doctor, a teacher, a writer, a contractor, a chef, nurse, a sports star or a parent, you have only this one life to do it, so put your all behind it. Remember this - when faced with a choice or action, you should be able to tell someone about it. It doesn’t mean you have to tell, or that you can’t have privacy. But if you ever find yourself faced with a decision that you feel you could never ever tell about it even to someone that loves you, then it's probably something you shouldn't do. If you respect yourself, then the choices you make, both good or bad, will not be regretted; Be kind to yourself But most of all, be kind to your parents...and thank them in advance because they could use a little love right now. Congratulations to the class of 2015.

Taking you through the home finding process By Cathy Graziano
Whether this is your first home or your last, it is probably the single most important and expensive purchase you will ever make. That is why you deserve a real estate professional with the knowledge and skill to assist you in making informed decisions and to negotiate on your behalf. With years of experience in the business, I can provide you the expertise and personalized attention you expect and deserve – before, during, and after the transaction. I will take the time to discover what is important to you and work diligently until you are completely satisfied. It always helps to brainstorm and prioritize a list of all the features you are looking for. We will start with the basics including style of house, size, number of bathrooms and bedrooms, desired neighborhood, commutes to jobs and proximity to schools, parks and retail services. Then, we will discuss the items on your dream list. The goal is to find properties that first meet your essential needs and then as many of the extras that you can reasonably afford. Matching the right home to the right buyer is my specialty. We will investigate various neighborhoods and tour houses to help you get a solid feel for property values. We will target your desired location and search for a home that fits your lifestyle and values. To save you time, I pre-screen numerous properties to find ones that closely match your list of needs and wishes. Then, I contact the seller and their agents and schedule showings to fit your schedule. As we tour properties, I will point out their attributes as well as advice you on taking a closer look at potential problem areas such as water seepage, ventilation, and finish work. Of course, there is no substitute for a professional home inspection once you make an offer, but knowing what to look for before entering negotiations will result in fewer surprises later on. Now that you have found the perfect home, I will help you determine a realistic offer price based on a general market overview and recent sales of similar properties. Next, I will submit a formal offer including property inspection and financing contingencies for your protection. Then, I negotiate on your behalf. The negotiating process requires skill, experience, and complete objectivity. I can provide the expertise you need while sticking to the facts. When I go to the negotiating table, I go fully prepared, armed with the right information, keeping your best interests in mind. I will also walk you through the entire closing process. I will do my best to ensure your deal closes smoothly, and without unnecessary costs. Even after the transaction is complete, I am at your service. My commitment to you is lifelong. Cathy is a resident of East Greenbush and an associate broker with RE/MAX Park Place. This year marks 25 years of experience in the real estate business for Cathy. She is also a member of NYSAR Professional Standards and Education Management Committees "I would appreciate the opportunity to earn your business and referrals, Call or text me at 518-496-2297 “ Cathy

Upstate Community Acupuncture
Patients who are new to acupuncture often report that they began sleeping better after their first treatment, even if their main complaint when they arrived in our office wasn’t poor sleep. Of course, if their main concern is a sleeping disorder, acupuncture can often help.Although it may sound unbelievable, at least 80% of our patients relax deeply or sleep during their treatments. Who would have thought that being ‘stuck’ with needles could actually be relaxing? I think that one of the biggest ‘side effects’ of receiving acupuncture treatment, for most patients, is de-stressing and deep relaxation, and this often translates into improved sleep.

It is the original Webb’s Family Farm, run by this father & son today. They dedicate their lives to the 450 acre family farm that produces corn, squash, melons, strawberries, pumpkins, cucumbers, cabbage, beans, raspberries, corn stalks… and much more. The fruits, and vegetables, of their labor are ONLY sold at their store located at 3447 River Road (9J) in East Greenbush, and at large retail stores. Chris & Kevin Webb work 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. You can tell a true farmer by their hands. When Chris Webb and I speak about his farm; you can see the pride & exhaustion on his face. And his hands are proof that he farms the land that his father devoted his life to. What you need to know as the consumer is that you can buy genuine Webb Farm produce at Webbs GOLDKREST farm stand on 9J, and at local retail stores, such as Price Chopper and Hannaford. Right down from Route 9 near Rensselaer, they are conveniently located and appreciate your business. They are the original Webb farm stand that produces their own products from the land that has been in their family since 1930. You may see other farm stands around town with the Webb name, but those products are not harvested by Chris & Kevin Webb in OUR TOWNE.

July 2015
Dear Our Towne Readers, How are we already half way through this year? As much as I was wishing away the cold days of winter, now I want to seriously slow things down and enjoy every minute. Now that the kids are out of school, we can all take a deep breath and be happy we successfully made it through another school year. It seems like just yesterday my girls were so nervous about transitioning into Middle & High School. Time goes by in the blink of an eye and, to be honest, I just don’t like it! Growing older is a gift, indeed. But...bittersweet for sure. I am so excited to make some new family memories this summer. Around the 4th of July we are going to New York City for a few days to conquer many of the famous landmarks that people from across the globe visit every day. We can’t wait to finally take the girls to meet Lady Liberty and find our family names at Ellis Island. The other three people in my family are history buffs, so I am sure they will be filled with lots of fun facts to (re) educate me. The Museum of Natural History, The Empire State Building, a boat tour around Manhattan, tour of the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum, walking tour of Central Park, and of course shopping are all on the short wish list. Our family is in love with the culture, electricity & energy of New York. If I won the lottery, an apartment in NYC would top the list of investments! Of course, I would still keep my home in OUR TOWNE for my country home... as life is so good here. I hope you enjoy this issue, as very page is filled with information about local businesses & community events. Please like Our Towne Magazine on Facebook so you can receive current information all through the month. Thank you for reading Our Towne Magazine. You can read the current and past issues on the website: www.ourtownerensco.com. Please let my advertisers know you saw them here! I am grateful for the support of the readers, community & businesses. Have a safe and happy 4th of July!

Summer Wellness Fun Ahhh…the lazy, hazy days of summer. Just the statement conjures up pictures of porch swings, kids home playing and vacation time. Even though that vision may not be representative of our day to day reality, oftentimes our fitness plan takes an unintentional vacation during the warmer months. Here are a few ways to stay “on track” during the warmer months. Play Play is one of the best ways to keep children excited about physical activity. This holds true for adults as well; take the kids to the park and play tag. Get off the beach blanket and try your hand at Frisbee, volleyball or soccer. Make a family field day with sack races, water balloon fights, tug o’ war and egg on a spoon relays. Finish the fun family time with a healthy barbecue. Explore Get outside! Living in the great Northeast we don’t get the treat of long sunny days but a few short months. Enjoy the great outdoors by taking a hike with the family, giving the bicycle path a try or signing up for a trail run. Cool off in the water Water activity is not just limited to swimming; there are plenty of other ways to splash through a workout this summer. Try water walking, water aerobics or interval training in the pool. A jumping jack in chest deep water adds 12 times the resistance to the submerged portion of the body compared to a jack on land. Be sure to apply water-resistant sunscreen and wear proper eye protection if you are in an outdoor pool. Go low or go in Humid days can make a high intensity or lengthy workouts a bit less appealing. Extreme caution is advised for outdoor exercise of a moderate or high intensity when the heat index exceeds 85. Substitute a yoga or Pilates class on those days or take your workout to an indoor treadmill, track or class at the Y. Any physical activity that can fit in to your summer plans is better than none. Make the effort this year to add activity in ways you may not have before. Whatever you chose, don’t forget the water bottles! Hydration is essential to a healthy summer and will keep you cooler as the temperature gauge goes higher.

Ask the Audiologist By Madison Hearing Center
Question:
What exactly is an audiologist?
Answer:
Deborah A. Ciprioni, P.T. Proud Owner & Operator
Morning, EvEning & Lunch hours individuaLizEd & PErsonaL carE rEcEivE thE attEntion you dEsErvE
An audiologist is a hearing healthcare professional who has a clinical doctorate degree in testing, diagnosing, and treating Dr. Chris Raffo an individuals hearing loss. This may help a physician understand what is causing someone’s hearing to be impaired. Tests are performed that help look closely at different areas of the ear; including the outer ear canal for impacted debris, the area behind the eardrum for possible fluid or abnormalities, the cochlea (inner organ of hearing) where vibration is turned into a neural signal ,and the auditory nerve and brain stem where signals enter the brain to be interpreted. Audiologists also evaluate the balance area of the ear for possible defects for patients who feel their equilibrium is compromised. When a hearing loss is presented that cannot benefit from surgery or medicine, then the rehabilitation of that loss is the fitting of hearing aids. An audiologist is the doctorate level professional providing this rehabilitation . Though hearing aids can be fit by other individuals, the audiologist is the only hearing healthcare professional allowed by law to test and diagnose based on hearing test results. Audiologists understand the importance of hearing well to ones overall well being, and have devoted their professional life to help individuals achieve improved communication and a better quality of life.

Road Trip CarGames!
How to survive and enjoy your summer road trips! I Spy Probably the classic make-time-go-by game of all time. One person looks around and chooses an object that the others have to guess, with their only clue being these words: "I spy with my little eye something that begins with (insert the first letter of the object's name)." Or the clue can be the object's color. The player who guesses the object gets to go next. The tricky part? It's not fair to "spy" something that's whizzing by the car at highway speeds. A landmark (mountain range, forest) that will be in the players' view for a few minutes is best.
20 Questions "Are we there yet? Are we there yet?" Only 18 more times to go! In 20 Questions, whomever goes first thinks of, well, anything. The first question is always, "Animal, vegetable or mineral?" After that, the players can ask pointed questions to try and guess — go around the car in a circle asking for clues such as, "Does it bark?" or "Can you peel it?" for example, although the answer to those questions can only be "yes" or "no." If you reach the 20th question without a winner, everyone has one last chance to figure it out before the "thing" is revealed and another person starts a fresh round.
License Plates There are many ways to play with license plates, depending on the age of your kids. Young participants can call out letters in alphabetical order; the first one to Z wins. Next, have them look for doubles — or better yet, triples! — of letters and/or numbers in the plates. The one who has the most at the end of the day/trip wins. Older kids can "collect" out-of-state plates they see. (Make it tougher by going in alphabetical order.) Or they can try to build words or phrases using the letter sequence in the plates. A plate with the letters E, F and T, for example, might become the word "effort" (using those letters to start the word, in the middle and at the end). Those could make "Ed's Favorite Tacos" if Q: Where was the Declaration you're running with phrases. A: On the bottom.

Local Veteran Raising Funds To Volunteer In Nicaragua Stephanie Fiebke (Belardo) was born and raised in Castleton and was a 1988 graduate of Maple Hill High School. She has been in the US Army since 2004 and is currently serving in the New York National Guard. She is a veteran of two deployments to the Middle East. Stephanie is currently raising money to go on a volunteer trip to Nicaragua to build a free school for adults who never received a high school education. Education in Nicaragua is not free like it is here in the United States. The volunteer trip is sponsored by Random Acts, a non-profit United States-based organization that has already built the Jacmel Childrens Center in Haiti. They are now working on building a free school in Nicaragua called the Center for Human Development with a full computer lab and updated learning materials. The first 25 people to raise $5,000 toward the building fund will have an opportunity to attend the volunteer trip. Additionally, volunteers will pay their own travel expenses.

outdoor summer fun… fun
Summer is the time for enjoying our beautiful weather and nature. However, where our pets are concerned, outdoor fun can turn into outdoor anxiety without the right precautions. As the temperature rises, the risk for heat stress also increases, which may lead to a potentially fatal heat stroke. While the very young and old are particularly susceptible, overweight pets are also at risk as well as those with cardiovascular or respiratory problems, short-nosed animals and those with a history of heat stress. Some signs of heat stress are excessive panting, drooling, warm skin, high fever, rapid heartbeat, fatigue or being unresponsive. The good news is there are some easy precautions you can take to protect your pets, such as providing a lot of fresh, clean water at all times; providing good air circulation and ventilation in enclosed areas like kennels or pens; providing plenty of shade coverage; never leaving a pet inside a parked vehicle; and not exercising the pet in hot or humid weather. Parasites and stinging insects can also be a danger. Fleas and ticks are often present year-round. If you have an indoor pet with fleas, those fleas have infested your home. Ticks are usually associated with backwoods areas, but they can be found in manicured yards as well. If you don’t see them, don’t assume they aren’t there. Ticks can be as tiny as a poppy seed, but may still be carriers for Lyme disease, anaplasmosis and other serious diseases. One of the best preventatives is giving your pet a monthly topical or chewable flea and tick control product. Blood-sucking mosquitos can be more than an itchy nuisance; they can infect pets with heartworms. Heartworms are worms that live in the heart, lungs and blood vessels. These parasites can live 5-7 years in dogs. Initially there are few to no symptoms, but over time, they can cause permanent health damage and can be fatal. Signs of heartworms are a mild, reoccurring cough; decreased appetite; weight loss; hesitancy to exercise; and fatigue after moderate activities. Detecting the disease early is critical and is as simple as a 10-minute blood test. Like most diseases, prevention is the best solution and a monthly chewable tablet makes it easy. Bee stings and spider bites can also be frightening, especially if the pet is allergic to the insect. If a pet gets stung and you notice unusual swelling, tenderness or soreness, call your veterinarian right away. Like other dangers, prevention is key and is often easier and cheaper than treatment. When using preventatives, keep in mind, not all of them are equal. Some are more effective, while others add more risk than relief. As with any pharmaceutical product, discuss with your veterinarian which products are best for you and your pets.
