The Our Towne Spotlight Shines on... HL Fuel Co, Inc.
When shopping around for home heating fuel & propane, you will certainly find that HL Fuel & Propane will not only BEAT any competitors price, he will also provide the full service that you would expect from a business that is celebrating 31 years in business. From the sale of your fuel or propane, to the service that may be needed on your furnace, HL Fuel employs the professionals to take care of your needs from start to finish.
Harry Hicks, the proud owner of HL Fuel & Propane is honestly one of the most down to earth, focused, smart and kind business owners I have met. He personally manages the finest details of his rapidly growing business. Born, raised and schooled in New Lebanon, Harry learned early on the importance of solid relationships with customers, built on trust, and consistently offering excellent products and service. Without the customer, we would not be here. "Those relationships build the business, and always improving the products and service is what keeps them." His grandfather, Harry B. Hicks, started Hicks Lumber Co Inc. (hence, the letters "HL" before Fuel and Propane) at that Route 20 location in 1929, and Harry caught the solid work ethic and entrepreneurial spirit from his father and grandfather at a very young age. Harry spent some time in the 70’s and early 80’s in the communications industry owning and operating H L Communications selling and installing satellite systems, but the challenges of the ever-changing heating business continued to intrigue him. In 1985, he officially started HL Fuel, turning what was his own home there on the site into the offices and building another house for himself nearby. In spite of the difficulties of the business, Harry says he has never regretted that move. What is most challenging? Harry notes that "it used to be easier to predict the ups of winter and downs of summer" When I started this business in the 80s, it was less volatile. You never could completely control Mother Nature, of course, but now it is even more imperative to have much better buying plans just to keep costs marginally under control. With thousands of long term customers, you can be guaranteed satisfaction. When you visit their office at 1232 Route 20 in West Lebanon, you get a sense of the scope of their professional and progressive operation The phones ring constantly and people drop in and out, but everyone remains calm and friendly in the midst of all the activity. They serve Columbia County and southern Rensselaer County, but they have many customers in Berkshire County, Massachusetts and Bennington County, Vermont as well. Over the years, Harry has developed buying strategies and operations techniques that enable him to offer fuel and propane at very competitive prices. They do not go through any unnecessary middle men or extra steps to provide their customers with product, so this streamlining saves money for the customer. HL Fuel also service and do heating system installations for all their accounts in house and do not contract the work out to others, so you always have consistent and managed care of your system from start to finish, 24 Hours a day. Aside from their excellent prices and efficient operation, there are many long-term employees who make dealing with HL Fuel and HL Propane a pleasure. Harry has employed about 15 to 20 local people full time and seasonally, but relies on his experienced core staff to assist him year round in providing great customer service and follow-through. Harry is a very hands-on guy and very accessible. It takes a great team of people to deliver such great service. Far too many to name individually, but a few include Sandy Mitchell and Tina Lawless Customer Service representatives, Service Manager Wayne Martin, Operations Manager-Book Keeper/ Leeann Krutziger, and Dispatcher Bob Safford. Last, but of course not least, is Harry's wife, Beth, who serves as Vice President and has her hands in all of the areas of operations, as Harry does. She also keeps watch over their three adorable shih-tzus – Charlotte, Tiffany, and the younger Lilly (who is always in the office greeting anyone who walks in the door). Now is really the time to review your heating system, get whatever service or maintenance you need done, and get yourself ready for the colder months ahead. HL Propane and HL Fuel offer many Prepaid, budget and capped price plans and can help you determine what the best course of action is for your particular circumstances. As a convenience to their customers, they have a toll free number and a website through which you can keep track of your account, order fuel or propane, pay your bill or buy a contract. You are welcome to manage your account online or call the office. They can also set up automatic delivery for you if desired so you will never be left in the cold. The cold days of winter are RIGHT around the corner. And if the Farmer's Almanac is correct, this is going to be another brutal winter! Call now to lock in your price for the season! Harry advises not to wait until you are absolutely frozen to check out your system and prepare. They have 24-hour emergency call service, but those kinds of calls are never ideal for anybody and are easily avoided! It’s always best to know what your options are. Nobody likes to think of heating costs of any kind, but if you are heating badly or inefficiently, you are not saving, but wasting money. Efficiency is one area proven to be better not only for warmth but for the cost of that warmth! You don't want to be "left out in the cold!" The main number of HL Fuel and HL Propane is (518)7949066. Their easy access website is www.hlfuel.com, and the toll-free number is 877-794-9066. There is always a real person at the office on Route 20 to assist you as well (and they are open Monday through Friday from 8am to 4pm.

July 2016 Dear Our Towne Readers, Welcome summer! School is out and we are ready to relax & take a break from the structure that the school year provides (and demands). The weather has been pure joy and I hope the sun shines on us throughout July. My family is going on a tropical vacation so we can unplug and reconnect after a busy school year. We actually qualified for free wi-fi on our cruise, but I passed. Enough with the screens and distractions! I have 4 months of magazines that I have not had time to read, a journal and a book on colleges that my oldest daughter and I will use for research & discussion about her future plans. We have lots of adventures planned and I want to be 100% present in the moment for all of it. I had many readers reach out to me since my June editorial that exposed my recent detox journey. Thank you to those who have given me a positive, encouraging sentiment. I am happy to report that I am still feeling great with my new, healthier lifestyle. I am incorporating Purium products into my life everyday. Along with a healthy diet and regular walks, I have continued to lose fat, gain muscle and stay away from my Diet Cokes & coffee creamers. I don’t feel like I have given anything up; only gained. I wish you all a Happy 4th of July! May you enjoy friends & family in good health and safety. We are so very blessed to live in the United States of America. Please continue to shop local and support our family owned & operated small businesses that are in the magazine. Please LIKE Our Towne Magazine (Rensco) on Facebook so that you can be reminded of what is in this issue throughout the month, plus community news and special promotions and contests. And please, keep this issue around, as I will remind you of coupons! Thank you for reading Our Towne Magazine.

6 Questions to Ask a Potential Listing Agent By Cathy Graziano Selling your home is one of the biggest financial decisions you will ever make. It is important to have a qualified professional by your side to help you navigate the twists and turns. Here are some questions to help determine which listing agent is right for you. 1. “Where’s the best coffee around here?” Although a perfect caramel macchiato is not critical to the sales process (though it certainly can’t hurt), your listing agent should have experience in your neighborhood. He or she should have bought and sold enough homes to know the area’s history, pros, cons and quirks, not to mention where the locals head for a good cup of joe. 2. “How will you market my property?” Two balloons on a yard sign no longer cut it. Find out exactly how each prospective listing agent plans to reach buyers. A strategy should go beyond holding an open house. (Yes, Open Houses do still work) However, if an agent looks baffled when you mention “virtual tour,” it may be time to find someone more experienced in digital outreach. Look at the pictures of other homes they have listed on websites. Is it Blurry? Clutter all over the room? Is that a picture of the living room or the couch in the living room? One flower or the Beautiful yard? Most buyers search the internet first. 3. “How many clients do you have right now?” Go for the Goldilocks agent, the one with the slate of clients that’s “just right” and can give you the attention and energy you deserve. Even with an assistant, an agent with double-digit clients may not be able to provide the personal focus you require. On the other hand, if you are an agent’s only client, there is probably a reason why.

4. “Can I talk to a previous client – or three?” Ask for references from clients an agent has worked with in the past six months. Some things to ask: How responsive was the agent during the process? Was the client happy with their sale/ purchase price? What could the agent have done better? 5. “How much would you list my property for?” Make sure prospective agents can explain their pricing rationale, including showing you comparable sales listings in the area. Also, ask for an area market overview. Did the agent only show you a few selected properties? Did they compare price per square foot & lot size of the homes. 6. “What’s your sign?” No, not their horoscope. Ask about professional affiliations. Are they a licensed salesperson, or Associate Broker? Do the hold any designations? For Example; GRI (Graduate Realtor Institute), SFR (Short Sales & Foreclosure Resource) "I appreciate the opportunity to earn your business and referrals, Call or text me at 518-496-2297 “ Cathy is a resident of East Greenbush and an associate broker with RE/MAX Park Place. This year marks 25 years of experience in the real estate business for Cathy. She is also a member of NYSAR Professional Standards and Education Management Committees.

EAST GREENBUSH TOWN PARKS ARE GETTING UPGRADES! The Town is currently working on plans to update the parks. Hampton Manor Park was first in line. What started with a Park Clean Up Day in April led to a beautiful new mural created by the Columbia High School Art Club, new four square courts, new gazebo, and new playground equipment. The project will be completed by the end of summer with a new nature walkway through the park and around the playground and connecting to Lakeshore Drive. The next park project will be the East Greenbush Town Park and we will share more information as we proceed

SPECIAL NEEDS TRUST By Christian H. Dribusch
If you have a loved one with disabilities a special needs trust is one important element in special needs planning. It is a specialized legal document designed to benefit an individual with a disability. If you have a loved one who has a developmental disability or some other disability, then you can use a special needs trust to ensure that the inheritance you desire to leave him or her will used for his or her benefit. These trusts are also called a “supplemental needs trust.” There are two primary purposes for a special needs trust. The first purpose is to keep assets for the benefit of your disabled loved one from counting as his or her own assets which could disqualify them for programs of government assistance, such as Supplemental Security Income (SSI), Medicaid, as well as subsidized housing and vocational rehabilitation benefits. The second purpose -- and the one that brings peace of mind to the family – is that the person with disabilities will be able to have extra care (supplemental care) over and above what the government provides. Not only will your disabled loved one live an enhanced quality of life, but he or she will not have to be alone because the special needs trust can provide for caregivers. Special needs trusts may be written into your Will or your revocable living trust. More often, however, a special needs trust is its own legal document. These trusts allow grandparents or siblings to contribute directly to the trust or specifically name the trust in their own estate plans to provide more funds for the person with disabilities. And, the special needs trust comes with greater flexibility, allowing funding through a will or gifts from relatives and friends made directly to the trust, or through life insurance policies. A special needs trust can hold an unlimited amount of assets. In a properly-drafted trust, those assets are not considered countable assets for purposes of qualification for certain governmental benefits such as SSI, Medicaid, vocational rehabilitation, subsidized housing, and other benefits based upon need.

But, beyond the legal provisions of the trust document, one way to be clear about what you intend for your disabled loved one's future is to draft a letter to be given to the trustee. This document gives family members and others the benefit of your knowledge According to federal law, distributions from a special about your child's capabilities, needs and fears, and can be needs trust can be used for supplemental and extra care over updated periodically. It is important to clarify that the special needs trust discussed are funded with assets belonging to someone other than the disabled person. Consequently, we have been discussing a third party trust. Federal law does not require any repayment from the trust’s assets at the time of death of the disabled person for the benefits received during his or her lifetime. This means you have the flexibility to dictate within the special needs trust where the remaining trust assets go at the time of the disabled person’s death. The special needs trust ensures that the trustee has instructions on how to make allowable distributions for the benefit of the person with disabilities.

"TURN THAT DOWN" Why is it that the person who has the hearing loss is usually the last to know? The ability to hear clearly frequently slips away slowly, and in response, we just turn up the volume. Did you know that a mild hearing loss doubles your chance of dementia, and that as the hearing loss gets worse that number goes up? Your ears are the gateway to the brain for so much daily information and communication. At Madison and Saratoga Hearing Center, our doctors are top level professional audiologists, providing diagnostic hearing evaluations and a wide array of treatment options, including the fitting of customized protective hearing devices and hearing aids, using the most advanced technology available. We can match the right instrumentation to your hearing needs and your budget. Hearing healthcare should focus on preventing hearing loss as well as treating it. Diagnostic testing is covered by most insurances (copay may apply) and having a baseline hearing test at age 55 is a great way to determine if any preventative measures are warranted. Trust your hearing to our centers conveniently located in Albany, Castleton, and Saratoga. Together we can form a professional relationship to help enhance your ability to understand your loved ones, in quiet and in background noise. The center is a privately owned audiologic practice by Dr. Chris Raffo, who resides in the capital area. You know you are receiving care from staff members that consider you a neighbor. Your satisfaction is our primary concern. So when you are ready to take your hearing seriously, we are serious about your hearing.

Ask the Audiologist By Madison Hearing Center
Question:
How can I protect my hearing aids against moisture and perspiration during these hot summer months?
Answer:
Dr. Kate Kawola Moisture is one of the leading cause of hearing aid break downs in the hot, humid months. During this time of year, it is important to take extra care of your hearing aids. Opening the battery compartments at night and keeping them in a dry case is the first step of keeping the hearing aid functioning at their best. There are also many products that can help maintain the life of the hearing aids. Dry aid desiccant containers come in several sizes and can help wick moisture from the hearing aids throughout the night. Desiccant containers come in a passive option, with rechargeable beads that are reactivated in the microwave or oven, or active options, that are electric and use heat and sanitation lights to prevent moisture damage. Other options include cloth covers, that act like a sock to protect the hearing against excessive moisture. If you are interested in finding out about more options to save your investment, please contact your audiologist!

ONE OF THOSE MOMENTS
Daryl Bart | www.darylbart.com I didn’t expect the pride and panic to feel so unusual. If either emotion shown up independently, I would have certainly recognized it. However, when merged into one singular emotion…….. Back in February, Nate chose to spend his winter break in a lifeguard class rather than the comfort of the couch, perfecting his texting techniques, and binging on Netflix. He took it very seriously, even the very early wake up to get there every day by 8 am (remember previous article about getting a speeding ticket) He was so proud when he passed that he promptly filled out job applications for the both our Town Lake and the local YMCA, ‘cause a kid’s gotta have options. He filled them out with purpose and intent, learned where we keep the important documents and memorized his social security number. We were of course thrilled when he got the job and shared the news around the family and facebook, not necessarily in that order. So today, I stood in the driveway as my son got on his bicycle, donning a backpack and a helmet and rode down the street, off to his first job. Yes, an actual paid job that is close enough that I don't need to drive him!!! I couldn’t quite describe it, in its newness of nerves and elation and palpitations - and no it wasn’t a hot flash. Which is why I decided at the last minute to scrap my other article and delve into this one. There have been very few things to date that have made me feel this way. Nate isn’t risky, or mouthy, we don’t have to remind him to try for 100’s, so there isn’t much to yell at him for (but seriously, how hard is it to hang up a towel). And, we really haven’t had to send the kids off “into the world” before. There was daycare. Nathan went to a neighbor's house. I didn't stress and I was quite sure he was having way more fun there than at home. They did crafty things and napped on schedule, and he came home using sign language to ask for milk. Yeah, he was doing just fine. Drop off at the Y had a few more moments of drama, but I was usually running late for step class, so with a quick kiss and a “Mommy’ll be back real soon” I didn’t really look back. Plus that baby weight wasn't going to work itself off, so the step classes won out over drop off guilt. In between then and now, sure we’ve had lots of moments: 1st day of kindergarten (he got on the bus and didn’t look back), 2 weeks at sleep away camp (I was jealous and wished I could go too) that special European Anniversary trip we took (“we’ll call you every day”) or when he asked “Can I go up the chair lift with my friends without you?” which if you knew what I thought of night skiing was more like a “YES!!” (insert fist bump!) but a little nerve wracking. In the moment, these times felt normal, part of thel scheme of things. Suffice it to say, today was WAY different, for me. This was the place where pride and panic merged into a brand new emotion that is not described in “What to Expect - the Teenage Years” I’m guess this new feeling is also looking for a place to dig in and hang out for a while, knowing that with a kid like this, there’s bound to be so much more adventure and excitement ahead of him. So if you see him at the lake, don’t distract him, unless he needs some sunscreen or looks thirsty. :-) I looked at Joe, and held his hand. We realized it was one of those moments. This sunny Father’s day, we were watching from the sidelines, as spectators, the culmination of a lot of years and lessons essentially ride off into the sun. Lets hope he keeps that helmet on.

Extra pounds, extra risk
It’s estimated that 45% of dogs and 58% of all cats in the United States are overweight. That’s a lot of extra pounds. Extra weight on pets might seem harmless, but an overweight pet can mean an unhealthy pet. Here are some reasons why we should keep our pets at a healthy weight. Arthritis. The leading medical issue for chubby pets is osteoarthritis. This disease affects small and large dogs alike as well as cats. Plus, being overweight is a known consequence for a dog tearing its anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), which requires expensive surgery to repair. Pets carry up to 60% of their weight on their front legs, so a few pounds can make a difference for pets with arthritis in the shoulder, elbow or wrist. Diabetes. There may be a genetic predisposition, but obesity is considered a major risk factor for diabetes in overweight dogs and cats. Diabetes can shorten your pet’s life if left untreated, and many dogs will develop cataracts which can mean eventual blindness without surgery. Life with a diabetic pet involves daily insulin treatments, prescription diets and frequent veterinary visits. High blood pressure. Hypertension can cause unseen damage. A pet may have heart trouble and kidney failure as well as blindness. Treatment can range from switching to a low-sodium diet to weight loss, exercise and medication. Cancer. One out of four dogs will have cancer, from lymphoma to osteosarcoma or mammary cancer. Like in humans, extra weight has been linked to cancer in animals. Breathing and anesthesia trouble. Overweight dogs have an increased risk for a collapsed trachea. In addition, the extra weight makes it harder on overweight dogs during anesthesia, which will be a concern for routine procedures requiring anesthesia, like having teeth cleaned. Life expectancy. A 1999 study on dogs found that dogs that were fed 25% fewer calories than normal lived an average of 2 years longer, and these dogs had fewer medical conditions and required less medications. Obesity also affects quality of life. Overweight pets are less likely to play and be active. They will tire quickly doing ordinary things like climbing stairs or taking a walk. One of the easiest ways to help an overweight pet is to feed them less at meal time. Your veterinarian can calculate the optimum number of daily calories your dog or cat should be eating. Another easy method is cut out the treats. Feeding pets from your plate or frequent treats can quickly sabotage the best diets. Even as little as 30 extra calories a day can add up to 3 pounds a year. Keep treat portions the size of a pea and limit them to once or twice a day Be safe; before putting your dog or cat on a weight-loss diet, talk to your veterinarian to plan a safe, healthy diet for your pet. Sometimes it only takes a few changes to make a big difference in your pet’s health. —Dr. Rose Broglio

Word of Mouth By Joseph R. Lapinski, D.D.S.
www.LapinskiDentaL.com Dear Dr. Lapinski: My daughter’s dentist said she needs her wisdom teeth out but they don’t hurt. Why would she need to get them out? A wisdom tooth (third molar), is like any other tooth. It’s primarily the location, size and progress of the teeth that are the issues. SPACING: Most of us don’t have enough room in our mouths for it to erupt fully. CLEANING: It’s more difficult to get back there and fully clean around the tooth. Food & bacteria can get trapped in the spaces between the tooth and the gum, and our regular brushing and flossing can’t get to it. The odd positioning, and partial eruption may also help cause cavities and gum disease in adjacent teeth. IMPACTED: Teeth can get stuck under the gum tissue and not be able to erupt. Often this is the “they don’t hurt” stage and we evaluate all the other issues. From my experience, most patients elect to remove them, preventatively. Most of the time I refer my patients to an oral surgeon for wisdom teeth procedures. Surgeons have additional training and most can sedate the patients, if requested, allowing for all 4 to be done at the same time. When I was a teenager, my dentist (my own sister) sent me to a surgeon for this exact reason. It’s most common for me to refer patients when they’re 16-18 if I suspect they’ll encounter any of the above concerns. At this time, we know the teeth are still small, the roots are not yet fully formed, the healing of the bone will be easier, and the removal tends to be simpler. Adults have wisdom teeth removed, too. Many people go their whole lives never having any problems - but like any other tooth, they can age, crack, decay or abscess. Summer and vacations are the most popular times for this procedure. If you’re considering the procedure, plan your consult for a convenient time to allow your daughter to recover without “impacting” her other activities (pardon the pun) Thanks again for asking, and remember, every case is different and must be discussed with your individual dentist/surgeon as to the risks or benefits. Good luck. If you have any questions email me at DrJoe@LapinskiDental.com
