The Our Towne Spotlight shines on... J. Hunziker Paving & Asphalt Serving upstate New York for more than 14 years, J. Hunziker Asphalt Paving greatly values the opportunity to serve and provide superior asphalt paving services. After working in the field for a few years, Jason Hunziker decided that it was time for him to start his own company. From East Greenbush, Jason bought his first truck at 24 years old. With a passion for his work and a strong work ethic, he has successfully grown his business in the Capital District and beyond. No job it too big or too small for this family business. His customers are impressed with his well run, professional team that beautifies homes and businesses for a reasonable price. The outcome is always beautiful, quality asphalt.

J. Hunziker specializes in Driveways, Parking Lots, Seal Coating, Basketball Courts, Excavating, Resurfacing, Digouts, & Decorative Concrete. What has led J. Hunziker Paving down this road of success?

From his previous employers, he took the good & bad experiences and developed a company that now serves both residential & business customers. Jason and his crew are very hard working, focusing on all of the details and quality of service. J. Hunziker Asphalt Paving has proven to his customers that he is a legitimate, honest business that is not out to take advantage of the customer or provide lackluster asphalt services. “J. Hunziker is big enough to serve, and small enough to care.” His reputation in the paving business has allowed him to grow by leaps & bounds in the past few years. He is always reinvesting in his business; purchasing new trucks and equipment looked cleaner than my car on any day of the year. They looked like showroom trucks, and yet, they were out on a job the day before. A very proud and hard working man, he is excited to share his work ethic and success with his son, Hank.

“We offer the highest quality services and know what it takes to meet your needs and surpass your expectations. Our team of professional and highly qualified staff, work hard to meet the customer's individual needs. With updated insurance, equipment and a record of being reliable, you won't be disappointed.” He encourages all customers to research your options before contracting or handing over money when doing any home improvement project. There are a lot of sketchy people out there looking to take advantage of customers. Jason has an A+ Better Business Bureau rating and Our Towne is proud to highlight a local man with a successful local business! You can view more photos of previous projects on J.Hunziker Facebook or www.jhunzikerpaving.com For quality and affordable paving services, call Jason today at 518-858-7917 for a free consultation and estimate!

In addition to hundreds of valued residential customers, Jason has also recently paved commercial parking lots like IVY SPA, Ryder Truck Terminal in Albany, VanVleck Custom Home Builders, 9 & 20 Auto Body, Total Tool and the new Citgo Station in Rensselaer. Not to mention, in the past years he beautified the new Hannoush Jewelers Flagship store on Wolf Road, the Taco Bell in Lake George, the 99 Restaurant & various Dunkin Donuts in the Capital District. He is highly respected in the community, and lives right here with his growing family in Our Towne.

5 Guidelines for First-Time Buyers Avoid

making the kinds of mistakes many first-time buyers make!

By Cathy Graziano

1. “I’m the guide, but you’re the driver.” An agent is there to advise, assist and offer direction but it’s you the client who remains in the driver’s seat. Your agent should be happy to show you any home you have interest in. If you see it on Zillow, Trulia or another website notify your agent to show it to you, clicking for “more info” & seeing it with another agent will only confuse things later. In the event you hit a dead end, recalculate, and both of you move on. 2. “Buying a home is a journey.” It’s an adventure. Don’t let anyone push you or dictate your direction. Stick to your own time frame and decide to buy only when you’re 100 percent certain you’ve found the right home. 3. “Bidding wars aren’t fun.” Price wars can prompt buyers to spend more than they intended, or result in them ending up with a house they’re less than thrilled with. 4. “Three must-haves is realistic; make the rest nice-to-haves.” Keep your must-haves to just three top items. Unless you have an unusually large budget, a long wish list will only limit your options. 5. “Get excited when we find the right one!” If the home isn’t “speaking” to you, if you don’t feel a sense of excitement about it, you have permission to walk away. As an agent, I see myself as a matchmaker. I don’t want market forces or significant compromises to push people into a home they won’t love. Cathy is a resident of East Greenbush and Broker/Owner of RE/MAX Platinum. This year marks 26 years of experience in the real estate business for Cathy. She is also a member of NYSAR Professional Standards and Education Management Committees "We would appreciate the opportunity to earn your business and referrals, Call my office at 518-720-3400 or call/text me personally at 518-496-2297 “ Cathy

July 2017 Dear Our Towne readers, Summer is in full swing! July is one of my favorite months; as we decompress from the demands of the crazy busy school year and focus on...relaxing and family time. My oldest will be gone for 4 weeks this year as a counselor at the YMCA Camp Chingachgook on Lake George. She will be missed greatly. I guess it’s a good trial run for next year when she goes off to college. (Deep sigh). As a parent, I realize the days may be long but the years fly by. How does it happen? At least my younger teen will be home enjoying life as an only child (GASP)! I will smother her with my time and attention to the point of utter annoyance; which will then prompt her to miss her sister! The town of East Greenbush has two full pages of activities and events for the entire community to enjoy. It is really a fantastic, free opportunity to gather with family and friends and have fun. These days, life is filled with so much stress and negativity in the news. When there are positive community events, it is really important to be present in the moment and enjoy what is here and now. In my opinion, social media seems to consume more and more of our time and attention. It is a source of frustration for me; realizing that time spent on our devices may allow us to feel closer to some people across the country, but at the same time, results in less personal interactions with those close to us. It is perplexing to me, honestly, that everyone seems addicted to knowing the thoughts, feelings and news of people that they often don’t even know well enough to call a friend. So, I guess what I am really trying to say is that I am planning on spending more time interacting with people this summer and less time interacting with my phone when I am not working. I wish you all a very Happy and SAFE 4th of July. Enjoy the quiet moments that summer brings and please shop local at businesses that families, not big corporations, run. Your patronage will be greatly appreciated. Thank you for reading Our Towne Magazine. Jennifer Felts

Keeping Vet Costs Down

No veterinarian wants to tell an owner that his or her pet is ill and needs costly treatments. While some conditions may be unavoidable, there are ways you may be able to decrease the risk of costly expenses, and they might be easier than you think. Here’s the countdown of five ways you may reduce veterinary expenses. 5 Watch for changes – Our pets cannot talk and tell us when they have a stomach ache or achy joints. We have to be aware of changes and react before a condition becomes serious. A normally affectionate, social dog or cat that suddenly prefers to be alone or is grumpy may be sick. Be on the look-out for anything different: too much or too little water intake, bowel movement changes, straining or loose stools, urinating too often or not enough. A dog that starts licking its paws a lot maybe showing signs of allergies. You might notice normally white hair on the paws become stained with a muddy purple – a sure sign of excessive licking. A drooping ear and repeated head shaking could mean an ear infection. Sometimes one sniff will tell you there’s an infection brewing. Speaking of a sniff, a healthy dog or cat will generally smell clean. 4 Be proactive – Some injuries are avoidable. Dogs and cats will not get hit by a car if they are kept in a safe environment. Keep the dog leashed during walks and don’t let it roam the neighborhood where it may have a run-in with not only traffic but also wildlife. Porcupines, skunks, raccoons, opossums, they can all injure pets (not to mention the rabies risk). Vaccinations can be a difference maker if a pet is exposed. Did you know that a dog can be exposed to the bacterial infection Leptospirosis just by sniffing infected urine or urine-contaminated soil? We know ticks harbor some nasty diseases, like Lyme and Ehrlichiosis, and we’re in a tick hot-zone. Flea and tick preventatives can help keep those parasites at bay.

Love Your Pet?… .So Do We!

3 Brush the teeth - It sounds simple, but the importance of good dental hygiene cannot be overestimated. Brushing your dog’s and cat’s teeth regularly helps control tartar and gum disease. Did you know that dental disease can lead to your pet having heart problems, tooth decay and loss, and other serious issues? 2 Control the weight – As with humans, it’s important to keep our pets’ weight healthy. Obesity in pets can lead to multiple health problems, such as hypothyroidism, joint problems, ruptured cruciate ligaments, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and even a possible increased risk for some cancers.

1 One of the best ways to reduce veterinary expenses is… bring your pet to the veterinarian. Regular check-ups may detect problems early. Early detection might give treatment options and may prevent the problem from becoming a major health issue later. Being proactive with your pet’s health is a way you can work toward keeping your pet healthy while also trying to keep expenses manageable. —Florence Sanford, CVPM

Castleton-on-Hudson Main Street Assocation Progress

“The Castleton-on-Hudson Main Street Assocation is a positive force dedicated to promoting visible change, economic growth, and community pride. “ Excitement and ideas overflow at every meeting of the Main Street Assocation. First, we are pleased to announce Main Street Day on 9/9 at 11am-3pm. This will be a day to focus on Main Street’s past, present, and future. We will have food and music, as well as information on Main Street and our Association. We hope you will join us and take part in the discussion that surrounds Main Street. Additionally, we have raised $1,350 to install a Nautical Flagpole on Main Street. See our website for more info. We will have a 501c3 charity setup to accept general donations by the end of August. This will allow us to raise funds for Main Street. In addition we have several smaller goals and some seedlings of ideas. A grant was submitted for solar powered speed limit signs. Plans to install a bike rack across from The Store are in the works. We are exploring ways to spruce up Main Street including more benches, painting the garbage cans and street signs, solar street lights, and avenue flags. We hope to create a volunteer Cleanup Crew dedicated to keeping Main Street neat and tidy. We are talking with DOT to get crosswalks at our intersections. We have had discussions around starting museums, a co-operative book store or a grocery store, or a Main Street focused real estate investment trust. We heard through the grapevine of two more businesses setting up shop on Main Street – more to come as we hear it. We are so excited. All ideas are welcome: big and small, reasonable and far reaching. Our goal is to harness the energy and ideas into visible change along Main Street. We hope you’ll join us. Word

of

Mouth

By Joseph R. Lapinski, D.D.S.

Everyday, patients say “Really Doc, all I did was…...” when they present to the office with a chip, crack or pain in the tooth. I can totally relate. Recently, while having my usual breakfast cereal, I heard and felt that tell-tale CRUNCH. I looked into my hand and confirmed what I already knew. I had cracked a tooth. You might be surprised to learn that things like this happen to dentists, too. So following my own rules, I came to the office and assessed the situation. I wasn’t in pain, it wasn’t sensitive, but it was sharp. I was lucky that they were able to fit me in so quickly. Much to the joy and horror of my assistants, I asked them to help figure out what happened. They took this opportunity to play dentist and wield the sharp instruments (just kidding). They took the x-ray so I could evaluate it. Something looked very wrong and I sent it over to my own dentist for a second opinion. (Yes, dentists have dentists) We compared the x-ray to the last one I had taken, about 18 months ago. Many folks think dental x-rays are optional, but it’s the really the only way we can see what’s inside the tooth, and it’s why I always recommend having periodic x rays taken for all my patients. My tooth developed an “internal resorption”. In other words, the tooth was basically collapsing on itself from the inside out. There was no evidence of this symptom on the previous x-ray and nothing could be done to save it. My only option was to have the tooth extracted. I went to an oral surgeon, who was confident he could take the tooth out and prepare the site for an implant, using a bone graft, which is exactly what he did. Now, I’m in a holding pattern, waiting for the bone to fully heal before I get the implant & crown, for a permanent solution. I definitely miss my tooth. The empty space is a little annoying, but I know in a few months I’ll be practically bionic. Ok, that’s an exaggeration but, I know I’ll be good to go, and eating the last of the summer corn with confidence. I’ll let you know how it goes.

Ask the Audiologist Q

Celebrating our 6th season

By Madison Hearing Center

uestion: I don’t wear hearing aids, but I have a hard time understanding people on TV, is there anything that I can use to help?

Answer:

Many individuals struggle to hear the TV. One of the reasons for the struggle is the speakers of TVs have been sacrificed by TV manufacturers to make the screens thinner and more aesthetically pleasing. By focusing on shrinking the size of the TV depth, they have eliminated the proper Kate Kawola, AuD speaker sizes that are needed for amplifying speech signals. There are several devices and tools you can use to help make TV Home of tHe popular PEANUT BUTTER CREAM SUNDAE viewing more enjoyable. Our first recommendation is to turn on Closed Captioning. This will allow you to have supplemental information to fill in the missing words. It often makes shows easier to follow, particularly if the characters have any accents. Another device that can Jet’s wishes you a Happy & Safe Holiday! be used is a pair of “TV ears”. This device will stream the TV audio directly through a headset worn by an Thank you for your patronage~ individual. The individual can that adjust the volume of CERTIFIED COLLISION REPAIR CENTER the headset to his/her liking. If more than one person is interested in using an enhancement, there are several speakers, or sound bars, that can be plugged directly into the TV, to enhance speech signals. Some sound bars use hearing aid technology to ensure that the audibility of speech is the focus, and not all of the extraneous background noises. All of these options can be reviewed and discussed with your audiologist!

#ALLTHETHINGS

Daryl Bart | www.DarylBart.com I read this book the other day called the “5 Second Rule” and I really loved it. I have recommended it to a lot of folks that struggle with time management and the desire to make lasting changes in their daily habits. It’s message was super simple and relatable. The author even makes fun of herself in its simplicity. Kind of like the Nike slogan “Just Do It”. The core of the “5 Second Rule”, reminds us to get out of bed, off the couch, onto the project, with a basic countdown without giving the brain a chance to redirect that action into fear, wavering, or indecision. By committing to the countdown, you are rewiring your brain. Most of us already have that 5 second habit ingrained in us with the basic activities like school and work...but for me #ALLTHETHINGS sometimes seem to never get done. I know there is some scientific law out there that clearly states “Once you have averted one crisis, another one will take its place”. At least that is my experience. Plus, I have my fingers in many pots, and that leaves lots of room for error. However, my very nature, to the core, is to spend the day shopping on Amazon, getting lost in vacation planning, drinking Starbucks and watching lots of Netflix. However, pesky things like, work, exercise, feeding the family, baseball games and appointments get in the way of my life of leisure. So, armed with a multi column to-do list as my daily guide, I make sure to add literally everything, right down to “Get Gas”. Check. “Pick up Allison”. Check. I mean, these items are kind of a given right? But the motivation I derive from crossing things off the list, is worth it. And no, I’ve never run out of gas (although I often see the light) and I’ve never actually forgotten a child, but will admit to being the last parent to arrive on one or more occasions. If I were to post a screenshot of my laptop right now, you’d see all the tabs I have open. My Amazon cart, a training video for work, several drafts of this article for Our Towne (:-)), Email, My Beachbody database, a social media platform that rhymes with placetook, my website, and a few more. For those that have somehow avoided computer use, the tabs reference means I have multiple web pages open all at the same time, accessible by little tabs at the top, kind of like a 10 subject notebook, each for a different topic. Leaving partially completed computer tabs open reminds me to finish watching the video, buying the stuff, visiting the college, writing the article (wink wink), planning the trip, paying the bill, checking the grades.

I should literally have a coffee mug that reads “This is My Brain on Tabs” Something that I thought was a “good thing” and prided myself on has turned into source of my own personal chaos creation. Multi-tasking. In fact, on my old resume it actually says “Effective Multitasker”. Now there’s an oxymoron for you. Even with knowing this, I don’t think that I will ever give up the tabs, but I have learned that if I concentrate even for a few minutes, on a specific task at had, I actually complete it and my cross-off ratio goes up.. In my fitness biz we call it a “power hour”. Targeted action for items that need to be done in a short amount of time. Since reading the aforementioned book, I’ve converted to this new type of scheduling my time and use my phone timer to work on things. Like 9-9:30 will be banking 10-10:30 will be emails, etc. When the pocket is done I move on, and wow, my focus has improved and the cross-offs have increased. I know, may of the readers here are like DUH, this is how everyone get things done, but somehow I didn’t realize it. These days, with this strategy, I find that I appreciate the chaos, and the process, more than I used to when the mounting list would only cause me stress. Now I feel more like a task acrobat and I proudly get to do #ALLTHETHINGS. And now that I am done with this article, Check, it’s time to workout. 5...4...3...2...1
