In this issue, we’re highlighting Lapinski Dental. I recently sat down with Dr. Lapinski to talk about his office, to look back but more importantly, look to the future. TELL ME SOMETHING ABOUT LAPINSKI DENTAL THAT OUR READERS DON’T ALREADY KNOW ABOUT FROM READING YOUR MONTHLY COLUMN. April 1st was our 22nd anniversary. Back in 1997, I was so thrilled to open my own practice because I had wanted to be a dentist since I was a teenager. When I was in dental school at the University of Maryland, I pictured hanging a shingle outside and being the small town dentist. I was a city boy that wanted to be in the country. Back when I first opened the office, I even had a garden in the backyard (before it was a parking lot). Some folks might not remember that our patients used to park along the side of Route 4 before the road was widened. Once that happened, I had to bring the garden to my house. THAT’S RIGHT, YOU’RE BROOKLYN BORN, SO, WHAT MADE YOU CHOOSE EAST GREENBUSH?

WHAT ARE YOU MOST EXCITED FOR IN 2019 & BEYOND? We have had quite a whirlwind few years. Dr. Barile joined us in the beginning of 2018. At the same time we took on the retired practice and patients of Dr. Moskowitz. We also expanded the parking lot and reconfigured our offices to accommodate the extra staff and new patients. Every day, Dr. Barile and I say that we have the absolute best patients in the world and through their kind referrals and Word of Mouth, Lapinski Dental is still growing. So we look forward to more of the same. TELL US A LITTLE MORE ABOUT DR. BARILE. Well, Dr. Barile is what I would call the whole package. She is a devoted mom to 2 young children, is married to Frank and came to the Capital Region with tons of high end experience, after living in the Hudson Valley for 8 years. She is very intelligent, and went to the prestigious University of Pennsylvania Dental School. She’s also native to the Capital District and graduated from Guilderland High School, and completed her undergraduate at the University of Binghamton. When I learned that she was both a Mets fan and a lefty (like me), I knew we’d have no trouble working side by side!

I went to undergraduate school here at UAlbany and did my residency in Schenectady. When it came time to open a practice, I looked for a place I would live, shop, work & be part of the We both love being dentists but agree that our first job is as a same community. While not a typical Main Street, I feel that parent. Having a career that allows us to do what we love and still I’ve done this here on Route 4 in East Greenbush. volunteer at school, coach sports and spend time with family really makes us happy. TELL ME A LITTLE ABOUT YOUR PRACTICE? SO WHAT DO YOU LIKE MOST ABOUT BEING A DENTIST? We have a comprehensive general dental practice. We do all There is a lot I do like but I feel most gratified when I can help aspects of dentistry, from first visit to last. We spend an hour give someone back their smile. Most of us take it for granted. with all new patients, getting to know them a little. I believe Recently, one patient needed treatment that lasted over the course taking the time in the beginning sets the stage for a great of a year. He started out terrified of dentists but when we were doctor/patient relationship that is built on trust and confidence. done, he had a new smile and a new confidence. Another patient I know that most people say they don’t like going to the dentist was self-conscious about their crowded teeth and she told Dr. but I also feel that much of that fear, stress and concern is Barile that she never smiled. Through some coordination with local because many folks have never participated in the process. specialists, we were able to help her have the smile she always wanted and it truly changed her whole demeanor. There are WHAT DO YOU MEAN BY THAT? countless stories like this but when a patient says that they love the dentist, it’s all worth it. Most of us have never seen inside our own mouth in detail. ANYTHING ELSE? During that first appointment I take the time to share information, show the patient what I see and together we come It might say Lapinski Dental on the sign, but I truly feel that every up with the best plan. Contrary to popular opinion, I love it when a patient is in the “no cavity club” and we can say “See ya member of the office is an important piece of the puzzle. I care what they think, and I trust that they represent our office to in 6 months!” It means that we’re both doing something right. our patients and the community with pride and positivity. ANYTHING ELSE STAND OUT TO YOU? I’d like to say Lapinski Dental is not your typical dental office. Patients often comment how friendly everyone is from the assistants to the hygienist and of course the reception staff. We all hold ourselves to high levels of customer service and I know that it shows. I’m also very committed to investing back into the office. I regularly renovate rooms and upgrade technology. I’m always looking for tools that help me be a better dentist and help the patient have a better experience. Whether it’s digital impressions, eliminating the need for messy molds, or digital xrays – reducing exposure to radiation and improving my ability to diagnose dental conditions.

Being a business owner here in East Greenbush is more than I ever imagined. I’m a local dentist and our office makes an impact in our community. Choosing to practice here all those years ago, was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. I have the greatest staff and the best patients, I couldn’t ask for anything more. Well, other than for you to come meet us in 2019 at 114 Troy Rd., East Greenbush or call 518-477-8428 to make an appointment.

WHAT IS SOMETHING MOST PEOPLE DON’T KNOW ABOUT YOU? Since my wife (Daryl Bart) began writing her column in Our Towne Magazine, folks know a lot more about us, which is fine. But I suppose it’s that I love baking from scratch. My staff definitely knows this because it’s my tradition to personally bake every employee a cake of their choice on their birthday. REALLY? THAT IS SUCH A GREAT IDEA. WHAT’S YOUR SPECIALTY? I have a few that I’ve perfected. However, I’d have to say my mom’s apple walnut cake recipe is a fan favorite as are my caramel nut brownies! Since Dr. Barile has joined the staff, I now make a pretty amazing chocolate and peanut butter layered brownie! (I even make those gluten free).

Nassau Pharmacy HealtH & Wellness Center

What is this “CBD” discussion all about, and…is it even legal? Scientific research now shows the many health benefits of CBD. Recent studies showed that 80% of chronic pain patients feel cannabinoids relieved their pain better than opioids, as well as decreased side effects and improved their quality of life. It’s gaining momentum in the health and wellness world, with some scientific studies confirming it may help treat a variety of ailments like chronic pain, anxiety, depression, insomnia, memory, energy, immunity digestion, substance abuse, and cancer related symptoms. It is even safe for your pets! CBD benefits are real because CBD does produce strong medicinal and therapeutic effects for even the most common conditions. It is not addicting and legal in all 50 states. You can purchase CBD in many forms: oils, creams, gummies, pills and for vaporizers. Nassau Pharmacy is your trusted local source for tested, high quality products without a prescription. The Pharmacy staff has been educated on proper dosages & the most effective form for your specific medical concerns. For example, they can tell you if CBD in a gummy form is more effective than a cream. With a very large selection of products, this local, independent pharmacy can offer you a personal consultation and certainly better guidance than what you would find on a website.

CBD has even been found to decrease addiction to opioids. How so? If a person has a prescription for a opioid pain killer, they can take less of that highly addicting drug (lessening the probability of developing an addiction) by using CBD to manage pain. The use of CBD alleviates chronic pain, decreasing the frequency of pain killer use. Stop by Nassau Pharmacy where you can consult with an educated, licensed pharmacist who will assess what product would work best for you. Have confidence that they only sell products from reliable companies who have test for quality and effectiveness.

Can’t sleep? Feeling Anxious? Have aches & pains?

How can we accomplish farm-to-table eating when our schedules are so tight? Here are some great ways to combine farm-to-table eating with valuable family time: 1.Plant a garden together. The simple acts of running our hands through dirt, tending to and harvesting our food, and cooking it allows us to connect with what we eat. And if young picky eaters get to help select, plant, and tend to foods, they’ll be more likely to want to try them! 2.Find a local farmer’s market. There’s plenty of fresh produce being grown by Capital Region farmers. Join us at the Greenbush YMCA and East Greenbush Library Farmer’s Market every Wednesday night from 4 — 7:30 PM to see what you can find right here at home! 3.Cook together using local ingredients. Not sure what to do? Join the Greenbush YMCA’s Healthy Living Committee for several cooking demonstrations this summer! On July 24 and August 21, we’ll show you how to use available ingredients to cook delicious international dishes. On August 14, you’ll learn how to make healthy, kid-friendly vegetable dip. On September 25, make a delicious dessert with our abundant apple crop! By taking the time to grow, explore, cook, and enjoy healthy local foods, everyone can take advantage of the nutrition and flavor available around town! Everyone's gardens should be planted and starting to produce. The rain of the spring ( & beyond) have turned the mud into thriving gardens enjoying the summer sunshine (hopefully). The Anchor gets bountiful fruits and vegetables from local farms like Kristi's Barn, the Community Gardens, Swartz Farm and others who have abundance and share with us. Please remember, if you have excess produce, The Anchor will gladly except your donations. The Anchor would like to take this opportunity to thank all community members who donated to the recent fire victims in Albany. We delivered many bags of usable clothing to help out the many families who survived the tragic event. When called upon, this community comes through to help others! If you would like to help us out with snack bars, fruit cups, juice boxes, crackers & cheese, etc. for the childen going to camp, please drop them off at your church or directly to the Anchor. Our hours are Monday evening 5 to 7; Tuesday's & Thursday's 9 to 2 & the first Saturday of the month 10 to 1. We will definitely see that the campers enjoy their camp time with healthy snacks. Dr. Nancy Ann Quimby

Dr. Kurt W Relation

Is your foot itching? Do you have a rash, raised patches or peeling skin? A rash on the foot can have a variety of causes. It may be a form of eczema, which is a group of conditions that can cause inflammation in the skin and often times is very itchy. It also may be an allergic reaction to something with which your feet have come into contact, such as materials in your shoe, chemicals, laundry detergent, or poison ivy. Another common reason for a foot rash is athlete’s foot, which is caused by a fungal infection. Fungus commonly attacks the feet because it thrives in a dark, moist and warm environment, such as a shoe. Fungal infections are more common in warm weather when feet tend to sweat more. Fungus thrives in damp areas, such as swimming pools, showers and locker rooms. you can also get discoloration on your skin from insect bites including spiders or ticks. Some systemic conditions such as psoriasis can cause white, flaking skin on your feet or on other areas of your body. Only by having the rash examined will you be able to get a precise diagnosis. A foot and ankle surgeon will determine the cause of your rash and provide appropriate treatment. Often times the treatment is painless and simple. Call for a consultation today for evaluation and to determine the best treatment option for you!

Reflections & Revelations By Suzanne St. Germain

The Magnets on My Fridge I don’t know about you, but I have found the magnets on my fridge quite convenient. I have used them over the past 20+ years to organize our lives. We have used them to keep track of the first day of school, what bus to look for and when to show up at Maple Hill for some basketball. I’ve even used them to teach my boys to read - who didn’t have the alphabet magnets?! At my “advanced age”, I find the need to affix items to my fridge waning. Somehow those little boys I had to keep track of for so many years have moved on to high school and college. Reminders are kept on our phones, bus notes are no longer needed and the crazy, multiple trips to school each day are a thing of the past. So, the magnets rarely move anymore and come off the fridge occasionally just for dusting. Tonight, while making dinner, I turned around and found myself reminiscing as I viewed this collection of magnetic history on our fridge. I realized they were never “just magnets” but, instead, a touch of our history. There are magnets the kids made at CES on artworks night what fun we had! There are magnets from friends summarizing how I’ve learned and grown since my divorce - “Do not start with me, you will not win”. My favorite magnets are the ones we bought when we traveled. Taking the three of us on vacation was never a small task for this single mom. It was a year-long collaboration of saving, planning and praying that all would go well. It was the shear desire to give my kids not just what they needed materially but also memorably. I hope they fell as I do, mission accomplished. I suppose we rarely take time to live in the moment when are moments are so crazy and hectic raising our little people. I can honestly say that the time truly goes by faster than you think. Do yourself a favor, take a minute tonight to quietly enjoy your memories/magnets on the fridge.

We all love food trucks! It might be the various options for all of our kids, that it brings gourmet foods to the streets or because it often fits within our budget. Winding Brook Country Club not only has a beautiful golf course, but they’ve been hosting their new Truckin’ on the Tee food truck nights with special musical guests. They’ll be doing these events at least through August. It’s important that we support our local restaurants and food trucks when we can. Many of the owners and staff live within our town. Work started last week on the Albany-Hudson Electric Trail behind our house and many houses and businesses throughout the town. In the meantime, while work is being completed, you can bike, push strollers, walk or run through town on our many sidewalks or existing trails. While you're at it, check out some of our beautiful historical houses, stores and restaurants too! Welcome Saisonnier to Kinderhook! You’re now open and we look forward to checking out your 150 craft beers, 10 draft beer taps and tasty cheeses. They also have a canning machine to can 32 oz. of many of their drafts. Ask the Audiologist By Madison Hearing Center

It’s that time of year again… allergy season. Many of my patients ask if allergies can impact your hearing and the answer is yes. Some symptoms associated with allergies can include swelling, itching, vertigo and feeling as though your ears are plugged.

Mary Resident since 2017

Megan Noonan, AuD If you have allergies, your immune system reacts to a harmless substance such as dust or pollen by producing antibodies that attack that substance causing histamine to be produced. When histamine is released, an allergic reaction such as itching, swelling, congestion and increased mucus production may occur. Skin reactions can occur as a result of allergies. The outer ear and ear canal can itch and swell. An increase in mucus production can cause fluid to build up in your middle ear, causing a conductive hearing loss. Swelling can cause your Eustachian tubes to close, which can result in a build up of fluid or pressure in your middle ear, leading to a feeling of fullness. This can also cause you to feel off balance and can occasionally cause vertigo.

5 Reasons Why Cats May Have Hair Loss

It’s estimated that 45% of dogs and 58% of all cats in the United States are overweight. That’s a lot of extra pounds. Extra weight on pets might seem harmless, but an overweight pet can mean an unhealthy pet. Here are some reasons why we should keep our pets at a healthy weight.

Life is a Highway By Daryl Bart

I’ve lived with my husband for more than 2 decades, I know the signs. It starts slowly, in a way that makes it almost seem innocent. But sooner than later, the chatter gets more deliberate. The Sunday paper sticks around for a few extra days past recycling day. A Consumer Reports appears casually on the kitchen counter. Stats and figures are randomly shouted from the computer at night over Netflix.

We lucked out when Nate started to drive and found a barely driven 8 year old honda from an woman looking to trade it in after 29,000 miles. Allison recently turned 16, and like any other kid her age, had a learners permit before she’d even blown out her candles. Within hours, the plan she’d been hatching began to take shape. Saying “Wow dad, what good gas mileage you get” and “Wow dad, what a lot of miles you have on this car” and “Wow dad, I feel so safe driving this car.” Our very own Little Red Riding Hood has her sight on this car and it’s not likely we’ll meet another granny over the river and in a parking lot. She planted the seeds that began to sprout.

Then comment on the highway or in a parking lot. Little asides while unloading groceries or getting gas. Talking about the junk in the trunk and how it’s not as shiny as it used to be. It’s seen better days and been ridden around the block a few too many times. Time to trade in and up. If I didn’t know better, I’d think he was ready to trade me in. But no, it’s time for a new car.

It’s a predictable dance. I foresaw the outcome after conducting a single google search on my own. I typed in “used reliable luxury sedan good gas mileage”. From the list of results, I picked one out that fit all of Joe’s usual criteria. Like a Survivor final vote, I wrote the make and model down on a yellow sticky note and showed my son. We gave each other a knowing look and a nod, and waited for dad finished his process.

Joe says he thinks he’ll wait until the fall, but I know better. As soon as the comparison research begins, talk of value, and gas mileage and options, there’s a new car in our future. He can chat with his brother in law who loves cars, and make copious notes on sticky pads for only so long before the test drives begin.

Flashforward a few weeks. Today we’re picking up that new (ish) car. The one that was researched and thought over, driven and compared. If you didn’t guess it, my prediction was Nostradamus accurate. He could have asked me in the beginning, but what fun would that have been?

We’re not super flashy about it when it comes to cars. We do like some of the nicer brands, but have found our ways to rationalize it over repair records and retained value. Most importantly, I have to remind Joe that whatever he eventually chooses needs to suit us (me) for almost a decade, and I need to look good in it for years to come. We like different things in the cars we drive. While Joe talks of gas mileage and repair records, I’m lost without Bluetooth integration for my Audibles, podcasts and of course the Hamilton soundtrack. I’m also quite sure I’ll never own another car without heated seats. We live in Albany for goodness sake. Bottom line: as long as I like the color of my own car’s seats and the number of available cup holders, I’m basically good. We’ve had many cars together. Trading up and on, making room for car seats and team mates and then sizing down. These days our biggest criteria includes does it have enough room to move kids into and out of college dorms and will it fit at least 2 golf bags in the trunk.

Helpful Tips for First-Time Homebuyers By: Marlena Brown, Licensed Real Estate Salesperson

Your first home purchase should be an exciting venture. This is an investment and commitment which requires research and preparation to make a sound decision. Here are some tips for first-time homebuyers: 1. Know your buying power. Obtain a mortgage pre-approval from your lender to use as a guide for a purchase price range to begin your search. A closing cost worksheet; provides you with an estimated amount needed for closing. 2. Be realistic about the market. Inventory constantly changes and remember, real estate agents do not control the inventory. 3. Always get a home inspection. The home inspection should be performed by a qualified home inspector. This is one way to inform the buyer of structural issues and or necessary repairs. 4. Find a licensed real estate salesperson (agent) that you trust; also known as the buyer’s agent. The buyer’s agent will represent your best interests; although, compensated by the commission paid by the seller for the sale of the property. 5. Take your time. The homebuying process can be overwhelming at times. This is not the time to make rushed decisions. Make sure the home and location is what you want and can afford. Understanding your finances and decreasing your debt is also very important when beginning the homebuying process. Lastly, know your limits - painting is inexpensive versus purchasing a fixerupper; which requires additional monies to hire experts to renovate. Good luck in your search.
