A message from OUR TOWNE Dear Readers, August is a wonderful month but it also brings us the end of summer ...as this will also bring an end to Our Towne with me as the Publisher. Our Towne has been a proud accomplishment for me for the past few years! It’s been an experience similar to raising a child...the time you put in from birth with a lot of love and endless hours of giving ...but then once the child is grown you have to let go and be proud. With Our Towne I have spent many hours nurturing it an making it grow, while helping small businesses advertise at reasonable prices and giving our readers interesting articles and community events to keep them informed. I know by the calls, emails and letters I get monthly that I have accomplished what I set out to do. Life gives us choices and paths for a reason. And unfortunately because of reasons out of my control, I don’t have the time to devote to keep Our Towne the publication that I want it to be... so it’s time for a change. I am very pleased that my former salesperson Debbie Gaylord will be taking over as Publisher starting with the September issue. She has very similar ideas as I have and I know she will keep Our Towne growing in the right direction . I have met many wonderful people, made many friends and have acquired loyal readers and also have learned a lot about Rensselaer County, both past and present. These are things I will cherish as I venture on another path in life. A special Thank You to our readers and advertisers for these years associated with Our Towne! I’m sure you will continue to look forward to the next issue of Our Towne, find homes for our rescue pets, enjoy local events and always remember to Shop Local! It’s been a pleasure! COVER STORY Oakwood Cemetery is featured - A cemetery is a history of people, a perpetual record of yesterday and a sanctuary of peace and quiet today. Oakwood Cemetery is about preserving this history. Since 1848 this nonsectarian rural cemetery has become the final resting place for many Americans. Among the many trees, winding roadways, and silent hills are the graves of “Uncle Sam” Wilson an icon which has represented us around the world for over a century and a half, noted educators Emma Willard and Amos Eaton , Financier Russell Sage, Civil War Generals including George H. Thomas (The Rock of Chickamauga) and General John Ellis Wool and Community founders, Jacob D. Vanderheyden, founder of Troy, and Abraham Jacob Lansing, founder of Lansingburgh. WORDS TO THE WISE for AUGUST By Shanon of Seraphim’s Keep
What a great month August is going to be for all of us eccentric, quirky and unconventional beings! Too often those of us who approach life in a different way from others: instead of not bringing up a subject because it might make us uncomfortable we would rather be uncomfortable to know the answer so they ask so we can move on. The one that relates more to their pet than their mate. The dreamer who literally can gain insight from their dreams. We, who wear colors to a funeral and understand why. The one who truly listens to their two year old’s opinion because they know those opinions count and only sound unrelated, it is more often we are just not tuned in enough to get it. So many of us that omit things about ourselves from conversations: pieces of ourselves that even those that love us don’t know about us because they are may define us as being too different. August celebrates you! This is a month is letting you know that God or the Divine or whatever name you give the greater awareness; GETS YOU. You are not weird or strange or less than those that can fit in with stampeding herd. Remember, a stampeding herd is large amount of fear driven beings heading towards an unknown fate, usually to escape another unknown fate on the word of many times, of one being who has no more insight than they do. Hey give me weird any day! Weird enough to know where I am going, what I want and how to get there, and weird enough to make it happen: thumbs up to being weird, I say!

Dear Miss Siggy,
Miss Sigmund
Robert is being rude. One day Robert and I were playing a guessing game in the cafeteria. I won. Robert said that I was cheating. Robert fights with everyone. Robert and Michael started fighting and then Robert kept saying that it was my fault even though it wasn’t. Then I started crying.

Some tips for Traveling on Road Trips with Kids
It’s Always a Fight Dear It’s Always a Fight, Bow-wow! Your friendship sounds like it is in “ruff” shape. You and Robert fight over everything! Most dogs can take a tangled “tail” and still remember that keeping a friend is more important than winning an argument. Ask yourself this question: Is it more important that I am right or that I am happy and have a friend? Remember that we all make mistakes, feel jealous, and get angry. Try a little silliness. It helps us all stay happy. Keeping friends is often about forgiving mistakes and then giggling together. That is how a DOGgone CATastrophy becomes a silly memory. Love, Miss Sigmund Dear Miss Siggy, How are you? I am terrific. I want to be your friend. I love you. What is your favorite color? Mine is lavender. Do you have a favorite animal? Mine is a deer. What games do you like to play? I love you a lot. Love, A New Friend Dear New Friend, One of the best ways to make a new friend is by asking them about themselves. We get to know each other this way. Bow-wow! You are very good at this. Here are my answers. My favorite colors are blue and orange. My favorite animal is a horse. Sometimes I vacation at a horse farm. It is such fun to play with the horses. I like to play fetch and Frisbee. I am a good fetch player. I sometimes don’t share the Frisbee because I like to chew on it. What do you like to play? Here are some questions for you. Do you have a best friend? My best friend is a dog named Piper. What is your favorite subject in school? Can we be friends forever? Thank you for getting to know me better by asking me questions. This was fun. Woof and Love,
Miss Siggy, a dog who loved being questioned

1.Keep a cooler in the truck with fruit, juice, water, and sandwich fixings. Make breakfast and lunch “picnic style” but dinner to be something to look forward to. The kids will love picking out restaurants for dinner and you will save money. 2. For long trips in the car you can play “Family Trivia.” Ask the kids trivia questions about family members. This is a great way to share family history with each generation. When your kids are little, start out with simple questions and as they get older make the questions harder. A great game they’ll love to play and share their knowledge of aunts, uncles, grandparents, and great-grandparents. 3. When your 8+ year olds ask “Are we there yet?,” hand them the map and ask them to figure out how much longer we’ll be on the road. Knowing how to read a map is a valuable life skill, even with GPS. 4. Here’s an idea for a creative car ride. Buy a package of pipe cleaners in assorted colors from any craft store. Kids love to create with pipe cleaners—making necklaces, swords, bracelets, towers—anything their little minds can think up. 5. When traveling with babies & toddlers, bring along a box of denture cleanser tablets. They are amazing for cleaning pacifiers, baby spoons, sippy cup lids, and anything else that is hard to sterilize on the road. Just fill a glass with warm water, drop in the item, and pop in a tablet. They’re good to go in five minutes. 6. If you’re taking on a road trip and will be staying in a different place each night, it is often easier to pack one bag for a day instead of using a separate bag for each person. By packing everyone’s clothes for one day into a single suitcase, you only have to bring one bag into the hotel each night and the others can be left in the locked car. Bites Bites--The Trilogy--part one Sometimes at night, when I’m just drifting off to sleep, I jerk my hand and wake myself-you know what I mean--only I’m pulling away from a dog trying to bite me! Happens every once in a while. I suspect it comes with the job. Probably contractors jump from table-saw kickbacks and pilots from near misses...I don’t know...maybe they dream of dog bites too. I say dog bites because they are the most common, by far, and generally do the most damage. Being something of an expert on getting bit, I thought I’d offer some views on the subject. There are distinct differences between the bites inflicted by the various species. The cat for instance, bites with such speed and agility that its more surprising than painful... the pain doesnt really get going until the infection sets in--usually 1-3 days later. Then you really feel the burn. The dog bite is usually more deliberate and thoughtful. They usually kind of wind up and there’s a split second where you might be able to react and avoid--too late--he nailed you...quick assessment--is he still coming? No--not bleeding yet...3 deep punctures and some sort of slash-here comes the blood...and it flows with vigor! And here’s pain--bloods friend--deep, crushing pain--now wash and soak, take advil and go to on-call for some meds...don’t let them sew you up...most bites should be left open to drain. Now comes the recognition of the emotional component. You’ve only just stopped shaking. You thought the situation was under control--what happened? Was that avoidable? Who let go? Will it happen again? At any time? For a day or two after I’ve been bitten I fight against jumpiness in my exams. Sometimes a nervous dog will turn quickly and I’ll jump. So uncool. Gerbil and rat bites are particularly painful--but the pain is sharp/piercing and just generally annoying. They usually hit the finger tips and webbing of the hand--with their ridiculously long, yellow teeth that are just sharpe enough to slice and dull enough to bruise. It’s very hard to do anything about them either...there’s no collar to hold onto, they’re difficult to quickly scruff, you can’t fling them--I can’t fling them--So you just take the bite and try not to hold a grudge.
see his beady little eyes as his beak relentlessly slashed through my leather gloves and tore deeply into my hand, then forearm, then head...he tried to eat my head. The whole attack lasted about two seconds. Then he fluttered a bit and flew away! Longest two seconds of my life. I watched my high school science teacher get bitten by his own python during show and tell. That was just really funny. He wasn’t hurt. Not physically. That ended our section on snakes. I suspect our own Dr. Green could shed some light on reptile bites...thankfully no one got bit the other day when one of his clients brought in an alligator...yes, I know...this probably won’t go well. Final thoughts. Bite wounds are serious business. Many times they can be avoided. Please don’t be offended if I respect your animals ability to bite the crap out of me. I know he’s never bitten before and that he’s a really good boy, but I’m doing some pretty obnoxious things to your pet. I’d probably bite me if I were him. Please protect me and my staff and my other clients if you know your pet may snap. I see some pretty violent animals in my practice--if I know their behavior ahead of time I can prepare and we can have a productive and fun visit. David Stone, DVM Peek into part two: “Ouch!”. “what?” “He just bit me!” “No he didn’t--what did you do to him!?” “I was just making notes! And yes he did--my pant leg is torn and look, I’m bleeding!” “Oh, that’s just a scratch--you scared him.”

Bird bites are, in my opinion, super scary. Don’t try to “save” an injured hawk...what was I thinking...I don’t see birds in my practice...I really like them but...I can still

Itch-And-Scratch-Bite-And-Lick! By T. J. Dunn, Jr., DVM Is your dog continually scratching, biting and licking at itself, and is driving you crazy….and you don’t know why??? Imagine how the dog feels! There are really six main reasons why dogs and cats will itch and scratch. The bottom line is... don’t let them suffer! There IS a diagnosis to be made and then you and your veterinarian will be better able to select the proper treatment plan. There is a wide spectrum of causes and severity of itching and scratching in dogs with skin and coat trouble. Some dogs can spend hours romping through fields, digging holes, and rolling in the grass and still have no after-effects at all. Others, kept indoors and fed an excellent diet, may have severe skin disorders. There are six main categories of dermatitis we veterinarians have to consider whenever a “skin case” is presented. Most skin and coat abnormalities can be defined by or placed in one of these categories: Environmental Many dogs are very sensitive to simple lawn grasses. And by matching what is visible on the patient’s skin with a probable environmental irritant -- the cause of the skin problem can be determined and corrective measures taken. An example is Moist Eczema, often called a “Hot Spot”. These skin lesions often occur as a result of moisture on the skin surface from rain, pond or lake water. Nutritional - Unfortunately, many dogs and cats live their entire lives in less than optimum health because their caretaker feeds the least expensive food they can find … and feels secure in doing so because of that “Complete and Balanced” statement on the package. If you feed dry commercial dog food, be certain that the first ingredient listed is meat such as beef, poultry, lamb or fish. Parasitic - the most common idea is the dog is itchy from fleas. There are many preventatives for this and there are also many forms of parasites that can cause itching. Allergic - Veterinarians spend entire weekends and lots of money attending seminars on this topic alone! Food ingredients, synthetic and natural fibers, medications and pharmaceutical products, plant material and even dust all can trigger an Allergic Dermatitis.

Neurogenic- Commonly, most cases have a suspected cause such as boredom, separation anxiety, frustration, confinement, or even a minor physical origin such as a tiny abrasion that captivates the dog’s interest. Infectious - Bacterial, fungal and yeast organisms are notoriously obnoxious skin and coat pathogensA common affliction of dogs, Infectious Dermatitis often is so irritating that dogs will lick continuously at the lesion and undo any healing that has taken place. A moist, sticky, inflamed skin lesion along with hair loss is characteristic of bacterial dermatitis Resolving these cases invariably puts a smile on the veterinarian’s face, the pet owners face, AND the dog’s! Help us find our fur-ever homes...Please! Purrrfect Kitty of the Month
Holly is a short-haired brown tiger kitty, about 7 years old. She is a very out-going, interactive kitty once you get to know her. She loves to be petted and cuddled and will seek you out for affection. She loves to sit on your lap and likes to be on a perch up high to watch the household activity. She likes to play and scratch on an old cardboard box and her scratching post - especially if you treat it with a little catnip! She would be a loving companion and would appreciate her chance at a “forever home” with a good person or family. Please consider adopting Holly! As with all Purrfect Companion kitties, Lea is up-to-date on routine shots, house trained and neutered or spayed. For more information on Lea, please contact one of the following Purrfect Companions’ representatives: Jane, at 436-7450 or Maryann at 331-2221 or at kitties.purrfectcompanions@yahoo.com. Purrfect Companions is a non-profit, all volunteer rescue organization. We are always looking for good volunteers to help with the kitties or assist at our adoption clinics. If you’d like to donate a little time to these worthy animals, please give us a call at 463-8709. Our adoption clinics are held 12:30-4:00 most Saturdays and Sundays at Petco, Northway Mall, Albany NY. Stop by and see some of our other kitties! We know we have one that is just “PURRFECT” for you!
Kendal Hi My name is Kendal. I was found in the Albany dump! Scared, skinny and filthy but some nice workers trapped me and got me into a foster home that cleaned me up and gave me lots of food~! I am a super friendly 12 week old girl. FIV/Felv negative, up to date on shots and spayed! I am looking for a forever home that will never throw me out again! Please call Heather 339-3315 or email heather@rockkrawler.com if you would like to meet me!
Josafine Hi my name is Josafine! I came to the Humane society because my owner had too many pets and couldn’t take care of me anymore. I’ve lived with other kitties and we got along really well, so if you have other kitties I’d love to meet them. I’m just 2 years old and a little nervous in my new surroundings, but I do like attention and would love it if you came and gave me some.
Cocoa Cocoa is a bit of a chubbette, but there`s just more of her to love. And what a lovable 7 year old lab mix she is! Her previous owners said she got along with strangers and we`re sure she did. She greets everyone who comes to her cage with a happy wag of her tail and what appears to be a big grin. Although she lived with three cats and two other dogs, her previous owners said she didn`t do well in that mix and they suggested she go to a single pet owner. Cocoa`s been a good girl while she`s been here and will tell you her side of the story when you come to visit her. She is a talker and, if you sit with her outside, she actually “sings” with contentment when you pet and talk with her, too! If you would like to meet josafine, Cocoa or any of our other wonderful pets available for adoption, please visit the Mohawk & Hudson River Humane Society at 3 Oakland Avenue, Menands, NY 12204.
Penny, Miley & Millford We were found dumped in PA at Wilksburry Campground. Someone just left us there with no food or water! A nice couple took us in and brought us back to NY. Please contact Heather @ 3 3 9 - 3 3 1 5 or heather@ rockkrawler.com if you would like to meet us!at 2256886 to ask about meeting me.

JESSEL JESSEL is a senior Golden Retriever mix. He is a darling boy who is on the small side. To know Jessel is to know what is true canine companionship. Whether it is hanging out in the home or on long slow walks, he will be right by your side. Besides people, Jessel gets along with other dogs, and is probably OK with cats. www.paulczechlaw.com I wanted to write a column about my next door neighbors. Sensing that I was not going to be kind (and I wasn’t) my wife put her foot down and wouldn’t let me do it. I understand, I suppose. It’s best to keep up a facade and give a forced wave once in a while, difficult though it may be. Unfortunately, I don’t always do what’s best. Now I want to make it clear, before I move on, that I have no issue with my neighbors in the community in general. I have always made it known that I like it here very much and part of liking it here includes a like for the people who live here as well. There’s Rick and Sandy who are just amazing people. The two of them have done so much for me and my family while I’ve been sick that there’s no way I could ever possibly repay them. Rick was with me while I was unconscious in the emergency room and he came to visit on numerous occasions during my nearly two month hospital stay. And Sandy, his wife, watched our son for us in their home when my wife was spending most of her time at the hospital with me making sure that the doctors were paying attention. And there are lots of other things that the two of them have done for us as well that, had they not, we probably could not have survived through this past winter. They are not related to us by blood and I’ve only known them since living here in Rensselaer County which is maybe three or four years. They’re our neighbors and I’m very happy for it. Then there’s the G-Man and Rocky. Both of these guys are musicians who came to me first as clients and ended up being great friends. Both of them took time from their extremely busy lives to visit at the hospital and at home and have been keeping tabs on me now for months. And Michelle and Susan, who I know from one of the boards I am affiliated with, both of them

showed some very neighborly kindness while I was ill. And Mr. P and Marian, neither of whom I have met personally , but both of whom took the time to contact me to simply wish me well after reading about my health issues in this column. (Marian sent a question that will be answered here shortly.) And Bill who contacted me with his advice about using an etch-a-sketch to talk with people. I’m glad my neighbors have a good sense of humor. I only wish that these neighbors could live next door to me. Oh well. So, since I can’t write about my next door neighbors, I have a very different subject to write about indeed. Clarence Clemons. That’s right - the “Big Man”. The amazing saxophone player from Bruce Springsteen’s E Street band who passed away just a few weeks ago. Now I have to make myself clear here as well - I do not follow the comings and goings of celebrities. I’m as interested in being entertained as the next guy but I’ve never been enamored by stardom. I have met a few celebrities in my day (that comes with working in the entertainment industry) but, quite honestly, I was never really impressed with any of them enough to ask for an autograph. (I take that back - I asked Julius “Dr. J” Erving for his when I made a commercial with him years ago in Philadelphia. He’s the only one I ever asked.) To me, drooling over someone who acts or sings is kind of distasteful and, quite honestly, I never got the feeling that any of these celebrities were better than me which is why I could never put them on a pedestal. (This month’s column was too long to be printed here in its entirety. To see the complete article, please visit my website at www.paulczechlaw.com.) Paul Czech

The Town of East Greenbush’s Community and Recreational Services Department would like to notify the residents of the town regarding various recreational activities that are available for all to enjoy. The Town Park, located off of Elliott Road, has three new color coded trails ready to be hiked. If you visit the town website at www.eastgreenbush.org you will find a map of these trails that you may print out to guide you on your way to exploring 1.75 combined miles of trail. Onderdonk Park, located on Hampton Avenue, is now open Monday through Friday from 10 am until 2 pm. There are picnic tables, two horseshoe pits, three bocce courts, a shuffleboard court and a putting green to practice your golf shots on. For your convenience, there are restroom facilities on the premises. At the Hampton Manor Lakehouse area there are picnic tables, basketball hoop, playground, and tennis courts--jogging and walking around the lake are highly encouraged. Also, feel free to launch your non-motorized watercraft such as kayaks, canoes and rowboats. It’s a natural resource right in our back yard that offers yet another form of exercise for individuals and families to enjoy. There is a basketball court on New Jersey Avenue as well as a new hoop court at the Prospect Heights Park. Feel free to call Nanci Hicks at the Department of Public Works to reserve one of our parks for your next graduation, birthday, anniversary party, company picnic, etc. at 477-6103. We would especially like to thank DPW Commissioner Dave VanWormer, Billy Malone and Jim Hempstead from the Parks Department and Matt Mastin of the Planning Department for working very closely with our department in achieving all of the above and countless other projects within our department for the residents of our town to utilize. Check the website periodically for any and all updates regarding activities associated with our department. We can be reached at 477-4194 for any further information. Enjoy the rest of the summer and, remember energy breeds energy--make the most out of each and every great day by participating in some sort of outdoor activity!!! Daniela Lanni and Anita Nero

Sarah’s Key is a beautiful novel about a horrific and underreported event that took place during WWII, the Vel’d’Hiv’ roundup of more than 13,000 French JJews in Paris by the French police. Told alternately from Sarah’s point T oof view in 1942 and that of Julia JJarmond, a modern day American journalist researching the event for its jo 660th anniversary, the author seamlessly weaves the two stories together. w At 10, “the girl” has heard her parents A whispering anxiously about roundups w aand camps and arrests, but they haven’t ttold her anything directly. When the French police come in the middle of F the night she does not understand. Since it is not the Nazis coming for them she believes all will be straightened out and they will be back home in a few hours. Her 4 year old brother, terrified, climbs into his hiding place in a long cupboard and the girl, thinking she is protecting him, locks him in and pockets the key, promising him she’ll be back soon. The girl and her family are taken with thousands of others, mostly women and children, to the Velodrome d’Hiver, an indoor cycle track in Paris, as a holding place before boarding buses for concentration camps hours away. They are kept there for days without food, toilet facilities, medical care, or blankets in overcrowded and inhumane conditions. Later they are paraded through town, loaded onto buses and driven away to the camps as Parisians watched, their reactions a peculiar mélange. At the camps the men are separated from their families. Weeks later, in a gut wrenching scene, the women are brutally and forcibly separated from their children. The adults are taken to Auschwitz and the children, even babies and toddlers, are left to fend for themselves. All this time the girl is consumed with guilt and fear for her brother, who she believes is still locked in the cupboard. She vows to get back to him. We are allowed to see the Parisian’s modern day apathy, their lack of emotion or knowledge of events that took place right in their own city. Julia is stunned to discover a personal connection to the Vel’d’Hiv’ roundup. She unravels family secrets and her story begins to intersect with Sarah’s. WARNING, you will NOT be able to put this book down. Available at Good Buy Books and is our reading selection for September.

Clinton Heights Fire Receives Grant The Clinton Heights Fire Department has received a favorable response to a proposal to purchase a RAD-57 carbon monoxide sensing device. The Grantor is the Oliver B. Merlyn Foundation. The RAD-57 is a hand held non-invasive device that tests for carbon monoxide poisoning in the blood stream in a matter of seconds. Placed on one’s finger, it quickly analyzes with seven plus wave lengths of light an extraordinary rich stream of physiological data measuring Carboxyhemoglobin and Methemoglobin percent levels in the blood of the patient. Since the inception of Amanda’s Law in New York State stating that all residences must have at least one carbon monoxide detector, there has been a marked increase in “CO calls” in the fire district. Two recent calls this year were very serious. The RAD-57 will allow the Clinton Heights responding fire fighters— many of whom are EMT’s—to immediately detect dangerous levels of carbon monoxide not only in the blood stream of residents but of the fire fighting personnel who enter potentially compromised homes. The addition of this device allows the Department to continue its mission to protect life and property on behalf of those who call for assistance.

The Lunker went to Sarah Jesmain with a weight of .84!!!
