AUGUST 2012
EDITOR’s NOTE JUMPERS (*title thanks to Laura Naumovitz) During a r ecent trip to Bash Bish F alls this summer, I discovered something that may have seemed obvious to outside observeres. In my family we are jumpers. By this I mean we have the tendency to sometimes act fearlessly, to jump off the rocks into deep waters. That day my son Josh was the first of our group to want to jump. I immediately protested, I pleaded, threatened and turned a way, I c ould not wat ch my baby (12 y ears old) take this dangerous risk. But my husband convinced me Josh would be okay, my Birthmother Midge rolled her eyes and so through peer pressure I succumbed. The first time was torture but by the tenth time I was woohooing with the r est of the gang and vicariously feeling the thrill myself. For some strange (probably psychological) reason when my nine-year old daughter Lexi wanted to jump I immediately said GO. Maybe because she is a girl and I am str ong proponent of girls and boys being equal, or ma ybe because m y naiveté had been worn down by Josh. I want ed her to succeed. I cheered her on and af ter a few dramatic moments at the pr ecipice (waiting for all eyes to focus on her) she leapt. A s I watched her let go I felt the thrill. Of course then Darren HAD to do it t oo. He has nev er been one t o shy away from an adventure. continued on next page...

When I was 9 or 12 years old I was the first to jump but now that I am older, I jump only metaphorically. My husband and I began our relationship with a crazy adventure and we have been risk-takers in life ever since. (Although I kind of think you are born that way). People often cannot believe the schemes we come up, quietly shak ing their heads w ondering if this time we have really lost it. Whether its moving to Korea, to New York or back t o Florida again; Or star ting another small businesses. Sometimes insane things just seem t o happen in our lives, like having triplets! It is anything but boring but we wouldn’t have it any other way. We figure, as long as w e are together as a family – we have what we need. This month’s cover shot is m y daughter Lexi in mid-air, which is how I feel at this moment in time . On A ugust 1st, I will be moving to St. Augustine, Florida with my little family of jumpers. While I am sad to say I will no longer be the pub lisher of OUR TOWNE, I am humming with the ex citing of the next adventure. Life is so very similar to jumping off a cliff and Showing my cousin Laura how to properly cover her entire body with sand. In the with jumpers, the sky is the limit. background - My childhood jumping rock (Mad River Glen - Vermont) Thank you to all the incredible small businesses in Rensselaer County and Northern Columbia County for making this community special, and thank you to the readers of OUR TOWNE. It has been a labor of LOVE. As always, please enjoy this issue of OUR TOWNE and remember to tell our advertisers you found them here. Sincerely, Debbie Gaylord, Publisher, OUR TOWNE PS A correction from last month: It wasn’t just Lisa C. who made Castleton an amazing place in the summer. A special thank you to all my BFF’s from childhood, including Jennifer B, Gina G, Kris Y, and the entire Castleton crew of kids circa 1975-1981.

The Name is
BASH BISH
S
by Darren Rosenbaum Bish-Bash or Bash-Bish? Bash-Bish or Bish-Bash? The words sound int erchangeable, and with y oung kids you never know which y ou’ll get, but that only serves to make this br eathtakingly beautiful Massachusetts state park even more of a must-see family destination. Bash-Bash Falls State Park is tucked away in the Berkshir es and locat ed near C opake Falls, just off Rt. 22. I t’s a relatively easy drive from almost anywhere in the Capital District and is about a 45 minutes from my home in Schodack. I’ve been going to Bash-Bish off and on for the last 35 years, a connection that started in 1978 when I attended summer camp a few miles away in Copake. At least three times a summer the entire camp would hop aboard a few ‘cheese wagons’ for the 5 mile trip t o Bash-Bish, and a da y of enjoying one of nature’s hidden treasures. Even after I stopped attending summer camp, I still visit ed Bash-Bish on a r egular basis, even bringing ‘new’ girlfriends there, to ‘test the waters’ so to speak! So, what’s the draw? Why would I drive 45 minutes to an hour to spend a da y at Bash-Bish when a c ool dip is just ar ound the corner at Grafton State Park or Knickerbocker Lake? Put simply, it’s the wat erfall, the alwa ys cool, crystal clear mountain wat er and for a family of 6, the cost… It’s FREE! Now for the disclaimer: The falls aren’t the highest or the most dangerous, even though some people ha ve foolishly injured themselves jumping fr om the rocks over the years. But it is local and with a drop of around 60 feet, Bash-Bish welcomes those who make the trip with a roar of approval. And, depending on the rainfall the area has received, water might be flowing from both sides of what’s become known as the ‘J-Rock’, a lar ge boulder which r esembles a ‘J’ centered above where the falls outlet int o the ‘upper pool’. The ‘upper pool’ is a sizable area that you’re not supposed to swim in but everyone does. If you choose to swim (as opposed to just dipping your feet in) remember that this is mountain water and you’ve been warned. I’ve never taken a thermometer with me but I’ve been known to describe the water as be 4

ing ‘Titanic’ cold! There are two ‘conventional’ ways of getting to the falls. If you park at the lower lot, expect a relatively easy hike of about ¾ of a mile. There’s room for about 40 cars and if it ’s a hot summer day, a holiday or weekend, get there early as the spots will disappear quickly. If you park at the upper lot, expec t a steeper path downhill, which isn ’t recommended if y ou’re not sur e-footed. And, aside from some garbage cans and a f ew port-o-potties at the parking lots, there are no services available. Make sure you stop at the Depot Deli, a small but w ell stocked country store a ½ mile away from the lower lot, for some sandwiches, drinks and snacks before you park. If the conventional sounds boring, there is a ‘Door C’, an exciting alternative to the traditional ways of approaching the falls on foot. Park at the lower lot and begin the hike but enter the brook as soon as y ou have the oppor tunity to do so . Because ther e are ‘No Swimming’ signs posted all over the place, you’ll notice that few people take this route to the falls. As you meander your way upward through the c ool clear wat er, the walk path, and the sounds of people, disappears to the north, high above you. At times it’s like you’re in a canyon, with trees towering on both sides and massive boulders ac ting like locks in a canal , forcing you to rise above each before seeing the next swimming hole. If you’re lucky, you alone will have taken ‘Door C’, and you’ll be free to grab and throw a handful of per fect skipping stones on that stretch of the brook, or just quietly take in what M other Nature alone can provide. As you’d expect, pacing is entirely up to you and arrival at the ‘upper pool’ could take as little as an hour , or most of an afternoon. I’ m pretty sure I’ve convinced you that Bash-Bish is the c oolest place to go on a hot summer af ternoon. However, if you’re still wavering, then get the camping gear out and make an overnight out of it. Sitting adjacent to Bash Bish is Taconic State Park with 106 campsit es and 16 cabins . In addition, the immediat e area offers history and biking enthusiasts quite a bit. While there, visit the Copake Iron Works Museum or bike a portion of the Harlem Valley Rail Trail. So, for either a day trip or overnight stay, the beauty of Bash-Bish will ast ound you and bec ome ‘that place’ you return to again and again.

SUMMER ON THE LAKES! Our Towne’s Favorite Local Swimming Holes
Without a pool and faced with one of Cherry Plan the hottest summers on record our family of six sought out local lakes to cool down, enjoy nature and just relax. We discovered some great lakes located right here in Rensselaer County & Northern Columbia County. Cherry Plain State Park
- NYS Parks, Recreation & Historic ... nysparks.com/parks/173/details.aspx Located on Black River Pond & offers a variety of outdoor recreation activities. Explore the hiking & biking trails, camping area, & swimming. 26 State Park Road Cherry Plain, New York 12040 (518) 279-1155. A wild ride through some extremely natural conditions but worth the trip. Breathtaking scenery, great beaches, swimming and camp sites. If you are truly lucky you may even run into some of your favorite friends and neighbors, like we did*
Knickerbocker Lake
, (Valatie) Knickerbocker Lake Rd (Off Rt 9 in Valatie) Swimming, Row Boats, Life Guards, Dock. The Town of Kinderhook takes over the Lake during the summer and offers swimming lessons in the morning. The town camp kids are there from 12:30 to 2:30 every day but after that is mostly empty and serene. Clean water is great for swimming and it has a dock to swim out to and jump in. So close to my house I could ride a bike there (and did as a teenager with Kris Y). We like to bring the kids here in the afternoon.
Grafton Lakes State Park Getting There - NYS Parks,
Recreation ... nysparks.com/parks/53/getting-there.aspxShare Located on mountain ridge bet ween the Taconic and Hudson Valleys, includes five ponds and 2357 acres featuring hiking, fishing, swimming, & boating. 100 Grafton Lakes State Park Way Grafton, NY 12052...(518) 279-1155. Avoid the crowds by hitting this one on a weekday, and be aware of a fancy entrance that got this novice pulled over by the local police for not doing it properly.
Snyder’s Lake ~ Run by the town of North Greenbush – this is an easy drive from Route 4. Go a few miles down route 43 and you are practically there. Great swimming with a dock . Nice beaches, refreshments including ice cream. Knickerbocher Lake Our Towne Rensselaer County ~ 518-641-9330 ~ debbie@ourtownerensco.com

THE COLLEGE FRESHMAN I remember the exact moment, after enduring the long drive to Albany in a cramped car, and navigating the oddly symmetrical SUN Y Albany campus, and after my parents ceremoniously said their hasty goodbyes and extracted promises to “call home” when and if I c ould find a public telephone (yes no cellphones) when I felt it.. – FREEDOM A s a teen, I’d spent a fair amount of time a way from home, first travelling for weekends with Dad , later at sleep a way camp. I had anticipated and practiced this feeling of independence and felt truly ready for it. I embraced it. It was an int ense time that was equally thrilling . I’d made a pact with myself to leave high school drama and family behind and introduce the new and improved college version of myself to the world. I don ’t know how the “epiphany” happened, but I r ealized at some point that being a t eenager was har d, that m y attitude had been mildly challenging to deal with that choosing a major, a career, a roommate, learning how to study and work, balance life and expectations, tempt fate and explore the forbidden fruits, make choices and decisions that w ould make a huge impact on my future and do it all essentially alone , was Really Hard. After one brief semest er away, I felt the need t o apologize to my parents, for supporting and encouraging me when I was no fun to talk to, underachieving, and even a tiny bit defiant. I was

sorry for shutting them out in the obno xious and demanding way that only a 17 year old girl could do. I let them know that I understood that their advic e and guidance was really in my best interest. M y children are too young to hear of my teenage mistakes and successes. I am, ho wever, lucky to have a sister who, 26 years my junior, is 18 and embarking on the journey that is life. I have some advice for her...sisterly advice, with the sincerity of a parent and with the hindsight of someone who’s been there. It is simply this. Embrace this opportunity; If you respect yourself, then choices you make, both good or bad, will not be regretted; I t is sometimes mor e important to decide what y ou don’t like or want to do and eliminate it as an option; Skills are transferrable from job to job, and since you’ll probably have several manifestations and r e-inventions over the years, become great at C ommunication, Customer Service, and Sales; No matter what you choose to do, be it the nurse anesthetist you are thinking about now, or a teacher or writer or engineer or parent...you have only this one lif e to do it, so put y our all behind it. But most of all, Be kind to yourself and your parents...and thank them in advance because they could use a little love right now. Congratulations to the class of 2012.

Dear Dr. Lapinski:
Word of Mouth
by Joseph Lapinski, DDS
I’m in a wedding this fall & want to bleach my teeth. I’ve tried drugstore products but I still don’t think my teeth are that white. Any suggestions? Jesse W. Albany
Dear Jesse
: Tooth Whitening is an extremely popular cosmetic procedure. For relatively little time, money and effort you can kick up your entire appearance. The most common ways to whiten teeth include OTC products like strips, paintons, rinses and toothpastes. In the office we do custom take home trays, 1-visit whitening and cosmetic rehabilitation using lab generated porcelain crowns and veneers. Strips are the most popular OTC products and I have seen reasonable results, reducing staining and improving color, but often not dramatic. I haven’t seen good results with other whitening products, pastes & rinses. Whitening toothpaste can be very damaging to teeth if use incorrectly. They often are very abrasive & literally scrub off the top layer of tooth structure. Gum recession and divots in teeth are being seen more commonly than 10 years ago, which I believe is the result of toothbrush abrasion & toothpaste misuse. Whitening toothpaste should be used by adults, and should be used cautiously to prevent long term damage. In-Office Bleaching is done using a specialized gel/light combination or we make custom trays to take home. Both can work very well & are safe to the teeth, not damaging tooth structure. The downside to 1-hour bleaching is that it’s a one shot deal & if you’re not pleased with the result – you usually have to repeat the procedure or get trays made. Take home trays are the most popular. The patient is in control of how often to bleach & periodically touch-ups are very simple. The most common side effects for both are tooth sensitivity & gum irritation, which are generally short in duration and General & Cosmetic Dentistry minor in nature. Lastly, you can whiten teeth by replacing them with crowns, veneers or a combination of whitening and cosmetic procedures – which can dramatically change the color, shape and appearance of your – but this is a topic for a different quesProviding heathly, beautiful smiles tion. for your entire family As always – consult your dental professional about ques114 Troy Road ~ East Greenbush, NY tions or concerns you may have – we cannot help you address issues if we do not know about them and there are 477-8428 often several approaches to a single issue. A MESSAGE FROM THE VET ~ Dr. David Stone, DVM
When Things Go Right by Dr. David Stone, DVM
Bad luck stories sell more papers. They abound. But sometimes you just can’t help but take notic e when something that c ould have gone horribly wrong, goes really well instead. Most of our actions probably end in r esults somewhere in bet ween—despite our best intentions. Yesterday a client came f or a recheck or something and w e got to talking about ho w beautiful his dog looked . She had lost about 6 lbs over the past several months and seemed somewhat more focused and in c ontrol of herself. He went on to say that he had changed her food and started walking her at least onc e daily, usually twice. They did a 2 mile loop. He says, “And by the way…she hasn’t needed ear medicine since we stopped feeding her that crap. Now she’s more like what I alwa ys thought she should be--know what I mean? “ Also yesterday, client comes in with her friend and her friends ’ dog. Apparently I had seen a different but related dog a while back and the o wners have been singing my praises ever since. Turns out I sa w their dog f or a skin condition, prescribed some shampoo, and the dog got bett er (I got luck y). And they had a second story of some mange I cur ed right out of the chut e after seeing their pr evious vet for months--I just tried the only thing the previous vet didn’t try…the only thing left to try—the treatment that I’ve learned to try sooner rather than later for the exact same reason they left their previous vet—I’ve tried everything else first, too. It sucks to lose a client because you’ve tried really hard to fix their pets’ problem and y ou just didn’t get it done. Yesterday I talked to a client who t old me that the night bef ore was the first thunder her dog slept thr ough in 5 y ears (5 y ear old dog), and that the half tablet of Xanax made it so she wasn’t cleaning up diarrhea all morning …we tried a few things first— thunder shirt, blanket, kennel, radio, cuddling, Benadryl, rescue remedy, some valerian c ombo, etc. Then we tried X anax. I t worked. Aren’t I the previous vet from the previous paragraph? I guess I finally got it done —I was g iven another chanc e, and another chance, etc. Yesterday I saw a dog for an ear problem. He came bounding in the door with vigor and ease…ears mildly infected…wait, didn’t I see this dog 6 months ago for torn ACL’s? Of course, he needed surgery and they couldn’t afford it…I remember how painful he was when w e diagnosed him…he’s walking beautifully!? Did you get the sur gery? No Doc , we gave him the medicine y ou gave us, rested the heck out of him f or a few months, got the weight off him, did some physical therapy stuff and some swim-
ming. What?! That stuff worked?! So far so good, Doc, so far so good. Young dog. Male. Super powerful. Hate to say it but they should probably start loading the piggybank …he’s gonna see a squirrel. The other day, yesterday I believe, I met a male cat with a simple urinary tract infection. Not a urinary blockage. I also met a vomiting and diarrhea afflicted puppy who doesn’t have parvo (and who’s feeling much better already). I sa w a limping dog who ’s leg isn’t broken, and another dog who ’s scary new tumor isn ’t cancer. I guess y ou can look at those examples an y which way. After all the cat does indeed ha ve a urinary tract infection and giving meds to a cat isn’t fun for either party. And the lethargic puppy has an IV cathet er in his arm, and the limping dog has lyme disease, and the tumor dog is scheduled for surgery… I finally neutered my cat, yesterday. 10 months old. Of course he started spraying…highly motivational. The surgery went well. Super smooth recovery. Very quick. It’s not fun to do even the simplest surgery on your own pet. Yet you can’t not be the one doing it if you’re able. Oddly stressful. Yesterday I got a call from a lady who informed me that she was moving to Georgia and she want ed to thank me f or years of what she considered excellent service and doctoring. She was so excited about the mo ve—great job oppor tunity, closer t o family, etc. It’s nice to be around people for whom good things are happening. It’s a little infectious. I’ll miss her . And I’ll miss her 5 awesome pets. S Maybe it’s perspective, the good or bad . I’ ve certainly been both, seen both, and done both. Alwa ys well intentioned, I can assure you. David Stone, DVM

Left Neglected By Lisa Genova
S
arah Nickerson, like any other working mom, is busy tr ying to have it all. One morning while racing to work and distracted by her cell phone, she looks a way from the road for one second too long. In that blink of an ey e, all the rapidly mo ving parts of her over-scheduled life come to a screeching halt. After a brain injury steals her awareness of everything on her left side, Sarah must retrain her mind to perceive the world as a whole . In so doing, she also learns how to pay attention to the people and parts of her life that matter most. n I this powerful and poignant "New York Times "bestseller, Lisa Geno va explores what can happen when we are forced to change our perception of everything around us. "Left Neglected "is an unf orgettable story about finding abundance in the most difficult of circumstances, learning to pay attention to the details, and nourishing what truly matt ers. I f you enjoyed “Still Alice” you will find this story as compelling. You will consider all of those little things that distrac t you as you drive. Do you text or answer your cell phone; do you turn t o scold the childr en; do y ou take y our eyes off the road for any number of split sec onds???? This could be you, or someone you love.
