AUGUST 2013 Dear Our Towne Readers, Did you ever wonder if just one random decision by another person could dictate the rest of your life? I recently had a conversation with my daughters, ages 10 & 13 about this question. The conversation started when I was driving my oldest to a camp through Questar Tech Valley Summer Camp. She and her friend had to be referred by a teacher or guidance counselor at the school to participate. The camp educated 8th & 9th graders on such topics as aviation, alternative energies, robotics & cancer research. My daughters friend told us about the opportunity; and we asked the school to make the referral. Luckily for my daughter & her friend, there were still spots open. When I told a few friends about her camp experience, they said, “I didn’t know she was a Science Kid.” I was shocked. She is only 13! She isn’t anything (yet). And why do we have to be something and not lots of things? I would describe her as well rounded: A hard working, social, creative student who loves reading & writing. She swims, dances, runs... She isn’t just ONE of these things.This lead to the topic of stereotyping and how opportunities are offered to our young adults based on one aspect of themselves, or because of the perception of who they are and what they (probably will or should) become. I started thinking how a teacher or school staff member had the power to refer a child this camp (or other similar opportunities), AND how that one experience could impact the rest of that childs life. Think about it. At the age of 13, these 25 students, who were “referred” by a school staff member, were exposed to areas that even most adults know little about. How my daughter now views her choices in life, as far as education and career choices, will be altered from this experience. She will have a greater holistic understanding of the world around her, and the role that she can play in it. Maybe that one student who never thought about a career in Technology, Science or Engineering is the person to find a cure for cancer or autism? That teacher or staff member, who refers students for programs and opportunities, can truly change the life of a person. Teachers, I ask that you remember to resist the urge to stereotype your students. Go out of your way to expose that “math/science” student to drama, writing & creative projects. My daughter loved the Tech Valley Camp and it certainly sparked an interest in all of the areas taught. Will she be a future scientist? I do not know. But I am sure she will be influenced by what she was taught as she proceeds with her academic and vocational future. So as parents, teachers & community members, let’s make an effort to expand our children’s world. Give them opportunities to try new things (beyond the age of 10!). Maybe they like what they like because they are good at it, and comfortable. And, maybe, with a little push and encouragement, they will explore new areas beyond that world that they are familiar with and discover that they can be and do anything. Jennifer Felts

The Our Towne Spotlight Shines On... Discovery Place Learning Center Have you ever worked in a program or job and thought, “If I was in charge, I could improve this program?’ Well, that is what the entreprenurs of Discover Place Learning Center thought many years ago... Discovery Place Learning Center, LLC, is owned and operated by Terry Duncan, MS Ed and Lynn LaVoie-Stephens, MA, both of whom specialize in the development of young children. Terry, who holds a Master’s in Special Education, and Lynn who holds a Master’s in Speech-Language Pathology, began their journey at entrepreneurs after working together in another educational setting. In 2010, they opened Discovery Place Learning Center, LLC to provide children & families with preschool experience that is developmentally appropriate. Children at Discovery Place are encouraged to explore their environment. Age-appropriate skills are reinforced in a variety of ways, including stories, songs, fine and gross motor activities, and handson play. The teachers help children learn ways to problem-solve independently and as a group. Each child’s strengths and learning style is considered. The teachers want each child to leave their program with the tools and strategies they need to be successful learners and effective communicators when they enter kindergarten. Our program is different because we’re a typical preschool but have Master’s degrees is specialized areas (Speech-Language Pathology and Special Education). We hire highly qualified staff members who we know personally or who are referred from friends and family in order to keep our program running smoothly. We found that many techniques we used with children with special needs could be applied to a typical program to help any child become a more successful learner. We are not a special needs preschool but we are willing and able to work in conjunction with therapists to help every child reach his or her potential.
Our program focuses on teaching the skills and strategies children need to be successful in the classroom, such as asking for help, verbal negotiation, problem solving, team work, and expressing emotions. We use curb-side drop-off and pick-up so we can foster independence from the moment each child arrives at school. We love being able to change and adapt our program to meet the needs of our students, rather than trying to make each individual child fit our program. We have a Master’s level Spanish teacher who works with each Kindergarten Readiness class once a week. In addition to classes, we offer Kids' Night Out once a month. Children ages 2-10 may be dropped off from 5-8 pm on a Saturday night. The children enjoy pizza, crafts, stories, songs, and fun in the play gym. It is a very popular program that gives parents & caregivers a night off! Our indoor play gym is open Saturday mornings from 9:30-12:30 between Labor Day and Memorial Day for Parent (stay and play) or Staff Supervised (drop-off) Play Time. “At 18 months our daughter was diagnosed with an neurological disorder which affected her speech. It was severe. We realized quickly that the path our other children took in early education would enough for our baby. She needed preschool early and 5 days a week. No “PJ days” for our girl. She had work to do. But kindergarten with her peers was our focus. We went to all the schools recommended by the specialists. However, although our daughter had a special need, she was not a special needs child. None of these schools were right for her. We were lost. Then our Speeh & Language Therapist told us about a new preschool just opening. Discovery Place Learning Center. It was just starting, winter semester. We have come to feel that this school was opened for the sole purpose of the needs of our daughter. That is certainly the way they have made us feel! Discovery Place Learning Center provides a warm, caring and very solid educational environment for the typical child, while supporting the special needs of the individual child. Discovery Place has been nothing less thsn a miracle for our daughter. Along with her therapists, who also became part of the Discovery Place family, the faculty and staff at Discovery Place has helped our daughter be more than ready for kindergarten this fall. Kristy's Barn is Peach CRAZY! The Farm at Kristy’s Barn has been a part of the Capital District community for over a century. Established by Fredrick and Jesse Lemka in 1910 as Glenwood Fruit Farm, a fruit, dairy, egg, and water farm (selling fresh farm water to Albany using the slogan of “What Troy flushes, Albany drinks.” Ray and Sue Lemka purchased the farm in 1951 and it became Appleland Farms. To keep the business viable they invested in a cider press and a store front on 9 & 20 (What is now Sweater Venture.) In 1994 Kristine Lemka Johnson and Kenneth Johnson purchased and moved back to the farm from their corporate America lifestyle in New Jersey. Over the years they have also made changes to the business to keep up with the times. In 2000, at farm stand was built on Brookview Road, and The Farm at Kristy’s Barn was established. Over the past decade The Farm at Kristy’s Barn has branched out into many directions; pasture raised chickens and turkeys, cider donuts, hayrides, petting paddock, school tours, a CSA, and farmers’ markets being a few. Peach growing is another direction The Farm at Kristy’s Barn has gone. The only peach grower in Rensselaer County, Kristy’s Barn is known for their two napkin, juice down your arm peach. This is the peach time of year so we thought we’d share the reasons why our peaches are so juicy. We are growing actual REAL PEACHES here on The Farm at Kristy’s Barn. This takes special care and knowledge that big box stores cannot provide on such a large scale, no matter what they claim. Our peaches are tree ripened. Meaning we pick each peach when the individual peach is ripe. Peaches are picked every other day, often picking the same tree four or five times. It is a very labor intensive process, but it’s the only way to make sure our peaches are picked at the optimum time. Large box stores don’t have the luxury of buying from farmers who spend this quality time with the peaches, so they are picked green and often chemically ripened. If you say you don’t like peaches, but have never had a peach straight off a farm, you owe it to yourself to taste one. We raise many different peach varieties that ripen at various times so we’ll have delicious, juicy peaches through August into mid-September. We thin our peach trees, meaning we go through each tree and limit the number of peaches on that tree, to get a variety of peach sizes. They all have the same great taste and juiciness. We suggest choosing the peach size that you can eat in one sitting - large, medium or small they all have the same great taste and juiciness. We also like selling our peaches on the firm side so they can travel home safely. Don’t worry; they have all the sweetness and flavor no matter how firm they are. If you like the juice dripping down your arm, just leave the peach on the counter for a day or two and it will soften right up. We highly suggest putting some peaches in the fridge, some on the counter so they don’t all soften at the same time. And if you want to go truly peach-crazy and freeze, can or jam our peaches – call ahead we sell by the half bushel as well.

THOSE DOG DAYS OF SUMMER, IT'S A BEAUTIFUL DAY! The summer months are glorious in upstate NY! Our faithful companions are thrilled with to be out and about with us; so, let's be sure to use common sense (and a dose of prevention) to keep us all safe and happy.

Give Parasites The Boot – Follow your veterinarian's guidelines to keep nasty fleas and ticks off, prevent disease and dangerous intestinal parasites. Check with your veterinarian to be sure you are getting the benefits of the newest heartworm prevention and tick control; it's worth stepping up to “gold standard” protection. Chill Out – Indoors is the safest place to keep pets during excessive heat. Provide shade and water outside. Apply sunscreen to white and fragile skin areas. Keep exercise at a minimum no matter how enthusiastic your dog is, especially thick-coated and short-nosed breeds. Recognize signs of heat stroke: lethargy, rapid heart rate, excessive panting and bright red or tacky tongue/ gums, staggering, vomiting/diarrhea. Move a pet with symptoms to a cooler area, offer small drinks of cool water, wrap head and feet with cool wet cloths and call your veterinarian (note: do NOT apply cold water). Hot Cars – DON'T DO IT. Death from heatstroke happens quicker than you can run that errand. Don't be a statistic—enough said. Backyard Hazards – Scout for mushrooms, toxic plants/bulbs and cocoa mulch in your yard or on the trail. Help your pet avoid toads, stinging bugs and antifreeze. If you have a concern, immediately contact ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center, (888) 4264435, or the National Animal Poison Control Center, (900) 680-0000, (800) 548-2423. Post these numbers and have a credit card handy for these lifesaving services. On The Go - Use a pet seatbelt, crate or constraint system in the vehicle. Pick-up beds and open windows invite eye injuries and worse. Make sure there is an ID tag on your dog and a leash handy. Drive safely. Before hiking, be certain vaccinations are up to date in case of animal encounters. Remember the poop bag! Pack It Up – Consider carrying a first-aid kit. The Humane Society lists their “must have” items, and bring any questions to your next vet visit. www.humanesociety.org/animals/resources/tips/pet_first_aid_kit.html Walking Smartly – Reap huge benefits from training classes. Skills you acquire encourage your dog to respond to you and stay under control—find a certified trainer in your area; you'll both be happier and more content. Let the Association of Pet Dog Trainers help (www.apdt.com/petowners/choose/default.aspx). Many products, like the Sensation Harness, Sporn Harness and Gentle Leader, make it easier by managing the puller. Your trainer will guide you. Hike with a meal, some treats and a rawhide in the event of an unplanned diversion. Dog Parks - Some owners visit dog parks so dogs can socialize and play; however, it has all the risks of any child's playground. Monitor your dog so he isn't bullied and doesn't learn to pick on others. If play begins to look/sound aggressive, suggest a time out for all the dogs. Play can turn to an argument quickly, and many injuries are reported. Watch behaviors to be sure that all dogs are truly having fun. If your dog or others have a tightly tucked tail, are trying to run away, hide or snap, consider simply removing your dog or come back when there is a different mix of dogs. Silence your phone and be attentive. Along with a risk of picking up parasites and diseases, there is also the very real risk of picking up bad behaviors. Note: Good play involves play-bows, chase, mimicking, mouth wrestling, respecting personal space and relaxed body language. Riskier play between unfamiliar dogs involves stiff body language, neck-orientation, full-mouthed bites, rolling, play up on rear legs and mobbing (a group chasing one shy dog). Avoid These Seller Mistakes By Cahterine Graziano of REMAX Park Place
You want to get the best price for your home, in addition to selling it in the least amount of time. In a buyers’ market such as we have now, homes can take longer to sell. Therefore, it is important to make the right moves at the very beginning of your homeselling process to remain competitive. Here are some common obstacles and how to avoid them. 1. Over-pricing — It is easy to think your home is worth more than the current market may support, particularly after the long run-up in home prices. Since home prices have cooled, home sellers should be prepared to negotiate on price & terms, and stay flexible to other stipulations benefiting the buyer. Sellers must also keep their emotions in check during the process. After all, your home is special to you and your family, and you are proud of the improvements you have made over the years. But, how does your home really stand up to the others? Are those improvements important to a potential buyer? To determine a reasonable listing price, consult with a real estate professional and get sales statistics on homes in the neighborhood including listing prices and actual sales prices, how long it took for the homes to sell, and value comparisons. They can help you determine true market value based on a comparable market analysis. Visit homes for sale in your area and compare what you see in terms of price & sales appeal vs. your home. 2. Negligent Housekeeping — Buyers need to be able to envision themselves living in the home. Take a good, objective look at the condition of your home. Clean, well-kept homes with an updated appearance always stand out, and a little decorating appeal can go a long way. You don't have to buy new furniture to create charm, but you can put toys and clutter away, freshen up paint and carpet, make the most of window coverings, and add a few key accessories. 3. Failing to Fix-It — Buyers, unless they are looking for a fixer-upper, would prefer to move into a home that is in perfect or near-perfect condition. If they have to fix the roof, a broken tile floor, the garage door, worn carpet or just about anything, this may give them pause about buying. At the very least, it may lower the value of the home in the prospective buyer's mind. 4. Not Identifying Exclusions — This can be a cause of contention just at a critical point in the sale. Be sure to specify any special sales considerations or exclusions from the fixtures and furnishings list. Generally, anything permanently fixed to the house is an asset that stays with the home after the sale. So if you intend to take the antique chandelier that is hanging in the dining room, clearly specify that the chandelier is not included in the sale price. 5. Not Understanding the Agent Agreement — Your sales endeavor will go smoothest when all parties have a clear understanding of what is expected. Understand the types of agency agreements when you sign with a real estate professional or company. Be sure to check on fees, commission percentages, marketing plans and timeframes. Dear Our Towne Readers, This month I am using my Expert Article space to publish a letter that was written to Jennifer Felts, the Publisher of Our Towne Magazine, about my business, A-Z Landscaping. I want to thank Jessica & Chris Hall for taking the time to write such a thoughtful letter. Since the Our Towne May Issue, I have met many new customers in Our Towne. My husband and I wanted to take a moment to thank you for the write-up on A-Z Landscaping earlier this spring. We had been looking to have a new walkway installed in front of our house. Over the last year, we had met with several local businesses for both interviewing purposes as well as getting quotes. Although I cannot say we had any negative experiences during that process, there wasn't anyone that jumped out at us either. After reading the article in The Our Towne magazine "spotlighting" on A-Z, we decided to give Steven a call. I can honestly say, we were happy with A-Z right from the initial phone contact!! My call was returned promptly and Steven was excited and eager to meet with us! He arrived promptly for the initial visit and for each visit thereafter. We discussed the walkway and he listened very intently to our needs; including our likes and dislikes. We looked through his portfolio and he directed our attention to certain features within the book. Within a few minutes, he had drawn up a proposal and we loved it immediately (and it was the first drawing which is very unusual for me as I am very particular)! In fact, we liked his work so much that we inquired further about redoing our landscape which we had intended to do ourselves!! Steven gave us a lot of information and ideas to think about! We broke after our initial meeting and Steven said he would follow-up with us over the next week. My husband and I had very little to discuss as we both truly felt very comfortable with Steven and A-Z Landscaping. For us, it was a done deal! True to his word, Steven actually DID follow-up with us over the next week. In our experience, especially during their busy season, it can be difficult to get a return phone call regarding estimates or any other type of work...but that certainly was not the case with Steven! We were happy to give the work to A-Z for a number of reasons. While they were not necessarily the least expensive, the price was fair. Although our budget was small, Steven found a way to envision something fabulous while staying within that budget. More importantly, Steven listened and was very good about managing our expectations! We felt he was honest and trustworthy and he instilled a sense of confidence within us! He had creative ideas yet he accepted input and feedback from us often incorporating them into his design ideas. He did lots of little extras for us, including offering suggestions and insight regarding other areas around our home. His attention to detail was fantastic and when he says it....he means it! Steven knows what he is talking about...but he says it with confidence not arrogance! In the end, we hired him to do the sidewalk as well as the landscaping and we couldn't be happier! The picture that I had created in my head, based upon my conversations with Steven, suddenly became a reality! Our home looks so different as it is much brighter, cleaner and completely refreshed. Dear Dr. Lapinski: I currently wear a partial denture & have a cracked tooth that isn’t fixable. I’m frustrated and it seems I should just take them all out. I asked my current dentist about taking out all of my teeth so I could just have a full plate. He doesn’t think it’s a good idea. What do you think? Bob F., Schodack Dear Bob: I must say that I almost always like patients to keep as many natural teeth as possible. Besides being functional, helping you chew & looking good when you smile, your teeth help keep the bones of your jaw healthy & solid by just being in place. It’s frustrating to have a non-restorable tooth. I still look to find the most conservative approach. In this case, maybe removing a single tooth, adding an additional tooth to the partial or even remaking the partial are steps I would consider before extracting all of your teeth. Without seeing the condition of the other teeth in relation to the partial &the rest of your mouth, it isn’t possible to determine the best course of action for you. Partial Dentures are held in place in part by clasping to the remaining teeth. Those teeth are anchors & need solid bone support. The teeth need to be structurally sound (no large fillings) & need to be maintained. Sometimes they need to be “capped” with a crown in order to make it an adequate support to the partial. If the bone support isn’t sound & the teeth aren’t in good restorable shape, then a complete denture or denture/ implant combination may be a better option. I consider many factors including your age, your health & your expectations to help you make the final decision. Transitioning to a complete denture is a big process. Between extractions & healing, the time involved to convert can be lengthy. It’s a decision to consider seriously & thoughtfully, with all the options & information on the table. HEY CONSTRUCTION CONTRACTORS! Does this scenario sound familiar? You did a construction job without getting paid upfront. Maybe you had a contract, maybe you did not. You completed the work with great results and the owner even commented, “Looks Great!” You go back to the office, have an invoice or an AIA payment application generated, and send it through the channels. Then you wait, and you wait some more. You make some phone calls, get the run around, maybe a promise of payment, or are ignored altogether. You realize that you are not going to get paid. What should you do? Chin up folks! The New York Lien Law allows contractors and certain others who have furnished labor or materials for the “improvement of real property with the consent or at the request of the owner” to assert a mechanic’s lien on real property for either a private or public job. Contractors have rights, but if you do not know how to assert them, they will do you no good. There are time limits, rules about what information to include, and who to serve with the notice of lien, among other things. If serving the lien does not shake payment loose, enforcing that lien involves a legal process. If this sounds like your situation, give me a call at (518) 225-3193. Health Insurance Corner… By CANDY MARRERO of Kleeber Insurance Services
Just when we thought we had the Affordable Health Act (ACA) down, there are already significant changes!! Two weeks ago the government advised that the penalty part of the ACA for large employer groups (groups of 50+ employees) will now be on hold until January 1, 2015. As it stands today (and certainly this could change too), the Individual penalty mandate is currently still scheduled for 1/1/14. This means that for individuals who are not enrolled in a qualified health insurance plan the penalties are as follows: $95 per individual adult, $47.50 per child and up to $285 for a family. In 2015 it will increase to $325 per adult, $162.50 per child and up to $975 per family. In 2016 it will increase to $695 per adult, $347.50 per child and up to $2085 per family. The rates for groups and individuals have been released and from what I can see now, plans will change and rates will increase --- so in many ways even with all this crazy confusion on health insurance, much of it seems like more of the same. That being said, for those groups that qualify for the 50% tax credit and those individuals that qualify for subsidies, there may be some light at the end of the tunnel. As the next month or two passes, I will have more & more information for everyone on this and the exchange itself. One thing I want all business owners to be aware of is that there is a mandatory letter that you MUST send out to EACH EMPLOYEE before October 1, 2013 that explains that exchange is available. I have this letter if anyone would like me to forward it to them just give me a call (518) 929-1506. There are still many unknowns about the exchange including what the implications are going to be with regard to income tax returns (since subsidies are going to be directly related to wages), so please keep reading OUR TOWNE MAGAZINE each month to catch up on the latest information on healthcare, there is still much on the way!!

By Allison Felts John Newberry Medal award winning book, When You Reach Me by Rebecca Stead is a wonderful book, and I recommend it to anyone. Rebecca Stead’s story has mystery, adventure, and science-fiction. It is exciting beginning to end. When Miranda enters sixth grade in 1979 she and her friend Sal know New York City. They know the way to school, back home, and everywhere in between. They even know to avoid the crazy man on the corner. Miranda and Sal grow apart after Sal gets punched on the street for what seems like no reason. So lately Miranda and her mom’s boyfriend, Richard, are helping her mom practice for her appearance on the $20,000 Pyramid. Miranda starts making new friends like Annemarie and Colin so she isn’t thinking about Sal. But when she starts getting mysterious notes from an anonymous writer she starts getting worried because they say they are going to save one of her friend’s life and her own. Around all of this she is trying to solve this mystery and figure out who will save her life. When You Reach Me by Rebecca Stead is an outstanding book. I recommend it to readers 8 and up who are looking for mystery and real life experiences. Rebecca Stead writes relatable characters that you stick with to the end of the book. When You Reach Me is a fantastic summer reading book for boys & girls!
Pay it Forward by Daryl Bart
Somedays I feel like I always get a story out of Starbucks. I go there to sit and watch people on the rare quiet afternoon. Sometimes I bring my laptop to work on this column or to dabble with my “next great novel”. I go inside to get gift cards for teachers & for new patients to our dental office. But most of the time I prefer to use the drive thru. On this day, I was on line @ the Starbucks drive thru (was I on-line or in-line?…I can’t decide) waiting for my iced coffee order to be ready. I love having a drive through options more than anything – drive thru bank, drive thru pharmacy, the library drop off @ East Greenbush branch, drive thru carwash, coffee goes without saying. We vacation in the Outer Banks and they have a drive thru beer store (Brew Thru shout out). When I was growing up on Long Island, there was great place called “Dairy Barn”. It was kind of like a drive thru Stewarts. I have lamented over the years that before we get another pizza place – we should get one of these around here (right, Muriel?) And, I have lots of great ideas for new drive thru’s - I mean who wouldn’t love a drive thru Target returns lane? So, for me, waiting for my order is an opportunity to multi task. I clean out my wallet – collect the gum wrappers & flosspicks that have collected in my cup holders (yes, I floss in the car, too), I check email and even play some Words with Friends (anyone want to play?) On this particular day it was 90+ degrees, for like the 3rd straight day – a record breaking heat wave, and even I – who tries to not discuss the weather because what can I do about it? - started getting very antsy.
“Come on Already! What could possibly take this loooong?” Finally, it was my turn & as I pulled up to pay, the young lady at the window said “Your coffee was purchased by the person ahead of you.” There is nothing and I mean nothing like being the recipient of a random act of kindness…I was washed over with a sweet and thankful feeling, my antsy, hot & mildly annoyed self received a total attitude adjustment in a moment. I couldn’t believe that someone would just go ahead and do that, for me, for no obvious reason other than to do something nice. I know – it was a $3 coffee – big whoop… I love getting a something for free as much as anyone, but this made me smile so completely. I try to live the golden rule – do unto others, yada, yada, yada. I volunteer when I can, smile, wait my turn & donate to seemingly worthy causes. By doing so – I feel good, but these are not anonymous kindnesses. There really is something special in doing something secretly with no one watching or no chance of being thanked personally. So, Thank you Coffee Fairy in the White SUV – your gesture was thoughtful and unexpected and has resulted in a token that has had a resounding effect. I haven’t been able to stop thinking about it. And while my own habits will most certainly keep me going from one line to the next…this random act has ultimately made the drive thru a place where I can now think outside of the box (or the line) and Pay it Forward. Here is a fun Game for your next Car Trip! “I Packed My Suitcase” I Packed My Suitcase” is a classic memory game which is useful for all sorts of occasions, from a doctor's waiting room to a long car journey! You can adapt it to all ages of kids, and adults enjoy playing as much as children. The first player thinks of a word beginning with the letter “a” and then says, for example: “I packed my suitcase with an apple” The next player repeats the sentence and adds something beginning with “b”, for example: “I packed my suitcase with an apple and a banana”. The next player adds a word beginning with “c”: “I packed my suitcase with an apple, a banana and a canary.” Play continues until someone can’t remember the list or makes a mistake. Depending on their age, you can either prompt them or disqualify them! Keep going until all players but one are disqualified, or until you reach the end of the alphabet. If playing with young children, it helps to make the words as silly and colourful as possible – they are more likely to remember them! If playing with older children, you can make the game even more difficult by choosing a noun and an adjective for each letter of the alphabet. For example, “I packed my suitcase with an active antelope, a brown bear and a chilly chicken”.

DEAR ANGIE, Dear Angie, My 9 year old daughter constantly asks for things wherever we go! I could say no and than less than a minute later she's asking for something else! And when I do purchase something for her, she is satisfied only briefly and than she is asking for something else again! I have tried to explain to her she does not need it, or it is too expensive! I am tired of saying no all the time. Please help! Mother with ungrateful daughter! Dear Mother of ungrateful daughter, You are definitely not alone. Kids are constantly begging for things at stores. I actually remember doing the same thing to my Mom. You have to remember that saying NO is a good thing. Don't think of it as always saying No. Think of it as another lesson learned. You can't waiver. Don't say Yes and then No. Just always say No and it will stop. I use to tell my kids before we even got out of the car, not to even ask for anything cause its going to be a No! Guess what? They don't even ask. I do however ask them here or there if they want something and they get so surprised and excited. What a change! The event will kick-off CCCA’s 19th Annual ArtsWalk. ArtsWalk is an exciting series of visual and performing arts programs and events showcasing area artists, taking place October 3-October 12, 2013 throughout the city of Hudson. Home Purchase and Home Repair Funding Available for Rensselaer County Residents Rensselaer County Housing Resources (RCHR) currently has grant funding available to assist local residents with obtaining and maintaining their homes. RCHR has been awarded grant funds under three government programs for down payment assistance for first-time homebuyers, home rehabilitation projects, and/or home modifications to improve accessibility for people with disabilities. To improve accessibility, income-eligible homeowners and renters in Rensselaer County may receive grant funding to make enhancements to their homes. Home improvements include items such as building ramps and widening doorways. Applicants who are Veterans are particularly encouraged to apply and will find that the income eligibility limits are higher for them. The Homeowner Rehabilitation Program can assist income-eligible homeowners with home repairs such as health and safety repairs, roof replacement, structural, electrical, plumbing and heating system repairs or replacements, window replacements and energy efficiency measures. Grant funds are also available to assist incomeeligible first-time home buyers with funds to be used for down payment and/or closing costs at the time of purchase.
Friends' Book Shop The Friends of the Kinderhook Library Book Shop at the Feed and Seed Building, just steps from the Library on Hudson Street, will open for the season Saturday, May 11, 2013 from 9am to noon. AUGUST 2013 COMMUNITY CALENDAR The Friends of the Castleton Public Library will be hosting a Music on the Lawn series on the following Thursday evenings in August from 6-8pm. The event will take place on the front lawn of the Castleton Public Library, 85 South Main Street, Castleton. There are no rain dates for these events. Thursday, August 8th: Tri-County Banjo Band-Toe-tapping, sing-a-long music from the early nineteen hundreds. Thursday, August 15th: Missing Link-Folk Rock and Country style music. Thursday, August 22nd: Tillinghast-A blend of Irish, country and folk music. Join us for dinner. The Friends will be selling hot dogs, grilled cheese sandwiches and beverages. Saturday, August 10 The Reformed Dutch Church of Schodack at Muitzeskill will be holding the Annual Mini-Market and Chicken Barbecue on Saturday, August 10. The church is located at the junction of Muitzeskill Road and Schodack Landing Road in the Town of Schodack. August 17th The 2013 Clove Run Road Races The Castleton Road Racing Commission in conjunction with the Castleton-Schodack Kiwanis Club have scheduled the Clove Run races to be held in the beautiful Village of Castleton on August 17th. All proceeds will once again benefit the Anchor food pantry in Castleton. There will be a children’s 1 mile fun run, a new event this year, a 5K walk, a 5K running race and a 10 mile race all starting from the Castleton Elementary School at 8:30 am.. The awards ceremony will begin immediately after the races are completed with a great lunch and live music. Summer is here and with summer comes a lot of home preparation, inside and out. NEW CAPITAL DISTRICT YMCA PROGRAM HELPS THOSE BATTLING PARKINSON’S DISEASE The Capital District YMCA has begun offering a new program specifically designed to help those who suffer from Parkinson’s disease. The program, called Pedaling for Parkinson’s, focuses on research that indicates that pedaling a bicycle may change the life of someone with Parkinson’s disease. Research conducted at the Cleveland Clinic showed a 35% reduction in symptoms by the simple act of pedaling a bicycle at a rapid pace ― optimally 80-90 revolutions per minute. Fast pedaling is not a cure of Parkinson’s disease, but there is compelling evidence that it can make a difference for those who try it. Fast-paced cycling is changing the lives of increasing numbers of participants who, before this, had no hope beyond medication and eventually surgery to slow the progression of their disease. The Capital District YMCA is offering this new program to help improve the quality of life of Parkinson’s disease patients and their caregivers; to help educate patients, caregivers, and the general public about the benefits of maintaining an active lifestyle after a Parkinson’s diagnosis; and to help support research dedicated to the prevention and treatment of Parkinson’s disease. “At the Y, we believe all people deserve the chance to live life to their fullest potential. For Parkinson’s patients, that may involve the ability to move more freely and with greater flexibility and balance. Pedaling for Parkinson’s can help reduce the symptoms of this disease for individuals who participate on a regular basis,” noted Nancy Gildersleeve, the Director of Healthy Living for the Capital District YMCA. Pedaling for Parkinson’s is designed for those who are 30 to 75 years old and have been diagnosed with Idiopathic Parkinson’s disease. Prior to joining the program, each participant needs to meet with a member of the Capital District YMCA’s wellness team, and provide a completed consent form and medical clearance form, and agree to periodically monitor their progress. This program is being offered at no charge to members of the Capital District YMCA, and at a cost of just $5 per class to community members.
