AUGUST 2014
Dear Our Towne Readers, I must take this opportunity to vent to my closest 16,000 friends. Not even half of the summer is over and I am already seeing “back to school” specials. Can’t we slow it down and live in the moment? I say this to my kids every day- LIVE IN THE MOMENT. Yes, plan ahead; but let’s not forget that we can’t make the most of today if we are constantly thinking about what we want in the future. I would like to say, for the record, that I protest the premature marketing & merchandising of holiday events & seasons (Anyone from Madison Ave & Wall Street listening)? I am still using summer items & I am not the least interested in thinking about back to school and Autumn decor (Keep in mind that I am writing this in JULY). Speaking of living in the moment... I do hope that my 14 year old daughter is enjoying her two weeks at Camp Chingachgook. If you are a parent, you are either feeling my heartache (awe...) from missing her, or you are wishing that your child would take a hike for two weeks. Last summer she went for one week, and upon her return home, she wished that she could have stayed longer! She had the time of her life and embraced not having a phone or any technology! Didn’t miss the TV, I-Pad or computer. What? She was not missing us? What? The food was better than at home? I didn’t want her to be homesick, but I also didn’t think she would come home hoping to go longer. I protested all year, because I knew that I would miss her. My husband said his years at overnight camp were some of his “fondest memories of childhood” and all of the awesome opportunities to learn new things and make new friends was fantastic. After hearing about the water sking, sailing, hikes, archery, swimming & amazing adventures on Lake George, I agreed to send her. She has been counting down the days since we registered her in February. With that said, I am now counting down the days until we pick her up. The community calendar is bursting with tons of events around Our Towne. Have you liked Our Towne Magazine on Facebook? It is another way that Our Towne is “connecting the community.” We post events, news and promotions from around Our Towne. Please contact me if you have a community event to post. I thank you for reading Our Towne Magazine. Enjoy the rest of your summer, be safe & be great. And please shop local & support your neighbors! Jennifer Felts

THE OUR TOWNE SPOTLIGHT SHINES ON... JET’S TRUCK & AUTO BODY
Rensselaer County native Jeff Pfeffer started Jets in 1984, on Rt. 9 in Castleton. He soon moved to his present location on Rt. 20 in Nassau, just three and a half miles east of the 9 & 20 juncture. This month, Jeff is thrilled to announce the opening of a second location on Route 9H in Kinderhook, in the former Kinderhook Toyota location. Jet’s is another example of a local entrepreneur who had the desire to succeed as a business owner in his hometown. Jet’s is a solid, local company that is built on pride, honesty, hardwork & superior attention to detail. As Jet’s celebrates 30 years in business, Jet’s would like to thank all of their loyal customers from both Columbia and Rensselaer counties. Their loyal repeat customers, Kinderhook Toyota and word of mouth referrals are the reason for their great success and longevity. Kinderhook Toyota refers most all of their collision work to Jet’s due to their attention to detail, quick turnaround & excellent customer service. Jet’s looks for feedback after providing service; so that they can improve the process and make changes on their end. They have many testaments (on the website) to his excellent service. “Accidents are stressful enough to begin with,” says Jeff, “so we try to make things as stress-free as possible on our end.” They work with all insurance companies and their estimates, and will try to speed the process up as much as possible. They do have rentals available and 24-hour towing capability. They can even pick your car up for repair and deliver it back to you on completion, if that is necessary. They are truly willing to go the extra mile. Since their real specialty has always been collision repair, everything from small dents to heavy wrecks, they have constantly kept up with the latest equipment and skills to handle whatever trouble has befallen your vehicle! They even have full glass coverage capability, including windshields. The facility has 7 working bays, 2 wash bays, and a down-draft painting booth for when they are done with the repair work. A Car-O-Tronics (which is manufactured by Car-O-Liner, a Swedish company) is a computer measuring system that puts the vehicle back into company specs, no matter what vehicle it is, car or truck, foreign or domestic. In addition to this, they have $80,000 of frame equipment and also a new resistance welder. This new I-Spot ($24,000) welder is programmable for different manufacturers’ specifications and can weld boron steel, for instance, which is on many of the new cars. They have spent a lot to insure that they can get a person’s vehicle back to the condition it was in before a collision. The finishing touches are a source of pride as well, baking the new paint on for 35 minutes to cure it in their newer technology paint booth, instead of the usual cross-draft procedures of old. The air is directed from the ceiling into the pit and gives a much better finish to the vehicles. Jeff and his crew want every owner to walk out of their shop pleased with the results of their repair. Jeff lives locally with his wife Karen and their three canine “kids” – Zena, Ziggy and new puppy Zoe – the latter being their “new office manager” jokes Jeff. Brian Duffy from New Lebanon has been with Jet’s almost since its beginnings, and Rob Kelley from Nassau and Ramon Petty from Philmont are also valued full-time members of the crew, each bringing experience to the mix. If you are involved in an accident, your first calls will be to your car insurance people and to report the accident to the appropriate law enforcement people. Jeff reminds potential customers that you have a choice of where you want your vehicle to be repaired, by law, and you are not required to just take it or have it taken to the closest garage, or to a dealership, or to any specific location the insurance company recommends. It is entirely up to you, and most auto and truck body repair shops work with not only all the insurance companies but with the major dealerships as well. If you need further information about your options and your choices, Jet’s would love to help you get through a stressful time as quickly as possible. Find out about your choices BEFORE you may need them, or just stop in to Jet’s to see how accessible they are and what they have to offer. They've been around for a long time, for many good reasons. Jet’s is open Monday through Friday from 8am to 5pm, but will always take later or weekend hours when necessary. Our Towne congratulates Jet’s on 30 successful years and on their new Kinderhook location!

It looks as good or better than it did coming off the storeroom floor. And thank you for working so closely with the insurance adjuster. You made a bad thing relatively painless." ~Mark and Robin in Stockport, NY "Jeff: We just wanted to take a moment to thank you and all of the staff at Jeff's Truck and Autobody for doing such a great job on our Mustang. We were having a real mid-life crisis when we spotted the car on the side of the road and bought it on a whim, and you guys brought it back to life for us you fixed all of the little scrapes and dings that came with age and gave her a finish that turns heads now wherever we go. She's a real beauty now, and we can't thank you enough." ~Jim and Meg in Wynantskill, NY "In May, 17 2011, on my way home from work, a deer ran into my 2008 Toyota Tundra. The front of my truck was a mess! Not knowing where to go to get it fixed, I statred asking around and kept getting the same answer: Jet's Truck and Auto Body on Rte 20 in Nassau. I was told they would make it right!!! They did that and more, way beyond my expectations, even down to the license plate ring. Jeff took care of everything! I couldn't be more pleased!" ~Jay in Nassu, NY

Kinderhook Bank Continues to Grow Beyond Our Towne
Kinderhook Bank (OTCQB: NUBK) announced they are expanding to downtown Albany and will open a branch at 39 North Pearl Street. “We are very excited to expand our branch network into downtown Albany and provide more outlets for community banking at its best,” said John A. Balli, Kinderhook Bank’s Chief Executive Officer. “The branch will have our signature relaxed atmosphere where the staff builds one-on-one relationships with our customers, combined with the latest banking technology,” Balli added. For the first time in any bank branch anywhere in New York State, Kinderhook Bank will feature the newest self-service banking technology, an In-Lobby Teller (ILT) kiosk to accommodate customers who want to conduct their own transactions. ”We are excited that Kinderhook Bank is the very first NYS bank to install our Optiva® 923 In-Lobby Teller for the convenience of their customers,” said Michael D. Kempt, Vice President-North America Operations for Diebold. “This approachable and comfortable, self-service technology lets customers conduct their own banking transactions inside the branch with access to branch staff if they need assistance,” Kempt added. Diebold is the leading banking industry provider of equipment, security systems, and services headquartered in North Canton, Ohio. In addition, the branch will be equipped with Kinderhook Bank’s advanced banking technology including an ATM that dispenses multiple note denominations and accepts envelope-free cash and check deposits, and produces “Smart Receipts” which generate an image of the deposited check on the reverse. The physical barrier between bank staff and the customer is eliminated with cash handler pods that facilitate conversation and service. Loan services will be available as well as a coffee bar with free use of Wi-Fi enabled tablets. Construction has begun and a lateSummer 2014 opening is anticipated. “Kinderhook Bank is committed to the Capital Region,” said Jeff Stone, Senior Vice President of Retail & Business Development. “Opening a retail branch in downtown Albany, combined with our well-established business lending expertise and commercial services, shows that we are focused on customer convenience and accessibility. We are very excited to be part of the ongoing growth in the downtown area. Additionally, adding a downtown branch fits well with our existing Albany County network including our new Latham branch which will be completed later this year.” Established in 1853, Kinderhook Bank Corp. is the holding company of Kinderhook Bank, with six full-service branch offices in Kinderhook, Delmar, Chatham, East Greenbush, Greenport, and Valatie. Kleeber Insurance Services, established in 1851, a subsidiary of Kinderhook Bank Corp., operates two offices in East Greenbush and Valatie and offers a full line of auto, home, health, and business insurance products. Insurance products are not a deposit or obligation of, or guaranteed by Kinderhook Bank and are not FDIC insured. May lose value. Member FDIC

KIDS PLANNING GUIDE : BUSY KIDS= HAPPY KIDS CK Dance Dances into 3rd Year It was after 12 years of working with some of the world’s most renowned directors and choreographers as a Radio City Rockette, Chrystie Kenny Greco, Owner & Artistic Director of CK Dance Company, in East Greenbush, had the desire to open her own studio and become the inspiration and driving force to a new generation of dancers. CK Dance provides aspiring dancers the opportunity to develop their technical skills and individual expression. Chrystie notes that dance teaches students valuable life lessons including discipline, team-work, responsibility, work-ethic, respect and commitment; making them well rounded individuals with a strong sense of self. CK Dance Company offers students the opportunity to develop these skills in a healthy, encouraging environment where competition is not the focus. All students are given a “professional experience. She passes along her knowledge and experience to all dancers, whether they take one class or 5. The class sizes are very small, so all students get the attention they deserve, receive personal feedback & encouragement. In addition to Chrystie’s professional dance experience, Anna Acker, former dancer with the Minnesota Ballet Company, continues to lead the Ballet program. Chrystie also invites aspiring dancers from around the Capital District to audition and participate in a weeklong summer intensive, called The NY Experience. This program enables CK Dance Company to host to some of Chrystie’s former colleagues and other industry professionals, as they share their experiences and expertise from the professional world through instruction. Chrystie truly believes in the benefits of working up close and personal with these amazingly talented individuals to help foster the essential tools and knowledge necessary to peruse dance as a career. The 2014-2015 season will bring a Performance Company, for students who are interested in taking their commitment to dance to the next level. Not a competitive group at this point, rather this Performance Company will dance in the community at special events and during the holidays. CK Dance welcomes Mrs. Amanda Forth who will be teaching Jazz and other classes for younger dancers, as well as Stephanie Walsh who will teach Adult Jazz and Zumba. CK Dance Company has already begun online registration for the Fall Program. You are invited to attend the upcoming Open Houses where you can meet the staff, register for classes and purchase discounted dance apparel, for class dress code requirements. The open house dates are: National Dance Day, July 26th from 10 am – noon, August 26, 27&28 from 4-6 pm and on September 2nd & 3rd from 4-6 pm. Class schedule and registration can be found at: www.ckdancecompany.com. Email info@ckdancecompany.com with any questions. Congratulations to CK Dance on their success!

WANTED: Students entering 8th grade The Greenbush Y proud to introduce a new Youth Leadership Development Program for students entering 8th grade in the fall of 2014. Follow Me is a program will offer young adults with the opportunity to develop important social, emotional, leadership & interpersonal skills. You do not need to be a member of the YMCA to take advantage of this year long program. The group will meet twice a month in the evening at the Greenbush YMCA. During each meeting, the group will be educated on a topic, participate in a group activity and then have some fun. It is a great opportunity to make new friends (from their current school or other local school districts). Some of the topics to be explored: Who am I?, Goal Setting, Making a Good First Impression, Work Ethic, Communication Skills, Active Listening, Conflict Resolution, Social Media Etiquette (Pros & Cons), Self- Advocacy, Stress Management, Healthy Relationships, Community Service & Volunteering & Wellness and Fitness. The program is about giving children confidence, setting goals, building relationships, and making a difference in their schools and communities. This program might be the boost a child needs to help them branch out and learn something new. The Greenbush Y is committed to offer programs which build healthy spirit, mind and body for all. Follow Me is a very exciting program that invests in our future leaders. Please refer students today. If you know a older young adult in High School who would be interested in a similar program, the YMCA also sponsors the Achievers Program. We are looking to start the programs in the Fall of 2014. Please contact Ross Jordan at 477-2570 at the Greenbush YMCA to inquire or sign up.
THE INVENTOR OF NETFLIX IS A GENIUS. By Daryl Bart
When I was growing up, I can remember feeling so lucky when I got a little black & white TV for my room. It was maybe a 13” screen and it sat on the edge of my desk. I loved it. Back in the late 70’s, early 80’s, there was no cable TV, no VCR, no computer, so this was as good as it got, and it was good. There were 5 channels & no remotes. I can clearly remember the fuzzy buzzing sound of TV when it went off for the night, the feel of spinning the channel dial back & forth until it finally just broke off. Watching TV was as addicting then, maybe even more so because there was such limited programming. As kids we had to watch some really bad TV. I’d watch just about anything if it remotely resembled a cartoon. I barely endured Lawrence Welk, but was later saved by gems like MASH & All in the Family. There was the original TV crack, Soap Operas. I loved them so much that by the time I got to college I was faithfully watching 5 every day (probably why my 1st semester wasn’t my strongest). Some shows still hold that warm and fuzzy place like endless hours I spent watching Little House on the Prairie. I wanted to be Bewitched and hoped I’d meet someone cool like the Fonz when I grew up. Learning life thru episodes of One Day at a Time and the The Love Boat. Cable TV came to my area in the very early 80’s – but we never had it. When I finally had my own place, I couldn’t afford it – and when I could, I just didn’t want to pay for it When we had kids, we remained cable-free & deprived them with only PBS & Disney videos to watch. Then, it had been going on for so long – no All in One package seemed worth heading to the dark side. Plus, I like the look of shock & horror when I tell my friends “Really, we don’t have cable”. However the truth lies in with me. We don’t have cable because I’d just never stop. Yes, I know the Discovery Channel has great shows & Yes, I know the History Channel is fascinating (I know you are all watching Train Wreck TLC, by the way). But, left to my own devices, I would literally watch every single before & after show known to mankind. I want to see them cook the food, sell the house, lose the weight, marry the guy, decorate the room, have the baby, renovate the kitchen, tour the country, flip the house, & yes, crash & burn. I’m a sucker for a BIG REVEAL. Truth is, our house doesn’t have cable TV because I need to sleep. At some point we compromised with a Netflix subscription. I’ve loved catching up on shows where I missed the very 1st episode or the random movie that I never saw in the theaters. I love introducing our kids to some of my old favorites (beware – the Breakfast Club has tons of foul language but is still awesome!) But most of all I love it because I found series like “Friday Night Lights”. Truth be told, it feels almost scandalous…it is cable, but better! Because you can watch all the shows IN A ROW! So, yes, I’m pretty sure that the creator of Netflix knew exactly what they were doing and they must have been like me, a kid deprived of cable, with only a fuzzy black & white TV with a bent hanger antenna. And I’d thank them if could – but in the meanwhile, I gotta go…I only have 4 episodes left of Orange is the New Black. What’s next?

Word of Mouth By Joseph R. L apinski, D.D.S. Dear Dr. Lapinski: My son was informed that his wisdom teeth need to be removed. Why do they need to come out? They don’t bother him. Dear Patient: Your question is very timely. The summer and holiday breaks are the most popular times for wisdom tooth removal. Wisdom teeth, the last 4 teeth in your mouth, are just like any other teeth. Sometimes they never come in, sometimes only partially. If they fully erupt into the mouth and can be maintained (that is the key point) they can be treated like any tooth and should last a lifetime. More often, I recommend removing wisdom teeth, for a variety of reasons. Many times there is not enough room for the wisdom teeth to fully erupt into the mouth. They either remain impacted, fully under the gums or only come in partially. If they remain impacted – the potential for infection & decay is possible because of pocketing under the gums, the potential for odd angles and pushing on other teeth. If a wisdom tooth is only part way into the mouth – it has the tendency to get food stuck between the tooth itself and the gum tissue. By Nassau Veterinary Clinic, PLLC
Challenge of Curvy Cats and Pudgy Pups We have more in common with our pets than just sharing a house. Carrying extra love handles is common ailment seen in veterinary clinics. According to the American Animal Hospital Association, 59% of dogs and cats are too chubby, and one study found that 39% of owners thought their portly pets were a normal weight. Just like with us, carrying around excess weight has a hefty price. Overweight dogs will likely have shorter lives. They are susceptible to developing cancer, Type 2 diabetes, respiratory and heart disease, osteoarthritis and high blood pressure. It’s never too late to shed some pounds. Here are some weighty facts about pet obesity and tips to help your furry friend. ~Some dog breeds are inclined to gain weight, like the Newfoundland, dachshund, Labrador retriever and cocker spaniel. ~Age matters. As pets age, their metabolic rate changes and they aren’t as active. ~Different seasons affect both appetite and activity. Your pet’s food portion should adjust accordingly. Split the daily food portion into smaller, more frequent meals. ~Food portion size may not be the culprit—too many goodies might be. Instead of doling out treats to show affection, groom, play with or walk your pet. ~Weight loss is usually achieved by pairing fewer calories with increasing physical activity. Brisk, heart-pumping daily walks (not leisurely strolls) can be the right exercise. ~Use part of mealtime food for training rewards or opt for low-calorie choices, like low-starch veggies or unsalted, unbuttered popcorn. ~Cats may have midnight munchies. Change the feeding schedule to accommodate the late-night snacker or use automatic feeders. ~Introduce new dietary foods gradually over a week or more. ~Increase activity by using food balls, food puzzles or hidden-food search games. ~Alternate feedings between upstairs and downstairs to get in some stair-climbing exercise.

Before starting any new routine, bring your pet to a veterinarian, who can quickly determine if weight loss is appropriate and provide expert guidance. At Nassau, we also carry therapeutic diets for weight management. These products are specially created to help pets lose weight. It’s another way we work to create healthier bonds between pets and people. By Dr. Catherine Ruggiero
Dr. Ruggiero joined Nassau Veterinary Clinic this summer. Originally from Saratoga Springs, she is a graduate from the University of Missouri-College of Veterinary Medicine in Columbia, Mo. Being a veterinarian allows her to combine some of her favorite things: working with animals, people and medicine. Along with her two dogs and cat, Dr. Ruggiero is happy to be back at home in the Capital area after four years in the Midwest, and Nassau Vet is happy to have her on our team.

MAKE ONE FINAL INSPECTION By Catherine Graziano
In the sales contract, the sellers of your new home agreed to leave the custom blinds, refrigerator, washer & dryer. You asked that the old broken workbench in the garage be removed. However, when you show up on moving day, all of those amenities are gone & the workbench is still there. Moreover, there is a huge gouge in the drywall near the stairway. Although these circumstances are extreme, they could happen, which is why it is important to have a final walk thru of the home you are purchasing before the closing. A pre-closing inspection gives you, one last opportunity to verify that you are getting all that was promised in the sales contract. Typically, a buyer takes possession of a property one to three months after signing the sales agreement. (Depending on if it is a cash sale &/or what type of financing a buyer is securing) A lot can happen before the actual move-in. Appliances and fixtures can break, and walls, carpets and doors can be damaged during the seller’s final weeks in the house, particularly during moveout. Sometimes the seller will simply have forgotten that he or she has agreed to leave the refrigerator or window coverings with the house. Whatever the reason, problems identified before the closing have the best chance of being remedied. If possible, schedule the inspection right before the closing, such as the day before. Ask your real estate professional to schedule & attend the inspection with you.
HERE IS WHAT TO DO:
Using a copy of the sales contract as a checklist, first make sure that all items that should be in place (appliances, builtin furniture, window coverings, fixtures, etc.) are there. Test each appliance to make sure they work properly. Test all electrical switches, outlets and the garage door opener. Run the garbage disposal and turn on every water faucet, checking under the sinks for leaks. Flush the toilets. Inspect the floors, carpets, walls and doors for recent damage. If you discover that something is damaged or missing, make a note of it and inform your real estate professional & the attorney representing you immediately. Take a picture if possible. The seller is usually able to take care of small problems, by returning the item to the home, making a needed repair or offering compensation to handle it. If there are major problems, the seller may agree to have the attorney hold back an amount of money agreed upon to make the repair & if the repair costs is less than the amount held the balance is released to the seller Although preclosing inspections take time and may be inconvenient, they are important and well worth the buyer’s time. Cathy is a resident of East Greenbush and an associate broker with RE/MAX Park Place. She has over 20 years experience in real estate and is a member of NYSAR Professional Standards, Education Management & Housing Opportunities Committees. “I would appreciate the opportunity to earn your business & referrals.” ~ Cathy
Home Cooking with
S tephanie By Stephanie Daly
"Healthy Pulled Chicken Recipe" Ingredients: 2 tablespoons olive oil (use more if necessary) 4 to 5 pounds skinless chicken thighs (bone-in is fine) 1 large Walla Walla or Vidalia onion, thinly sliced 3 ribs celery, thinly sliced thin 3 medium carrots, diced 2 large cloves garlic, finely chopped 3/4 cup dry rose wine (or dry chardonnay) 1 can (14 ounces) chicken stock 1 can (14 ounces) fire-roasted diced tomatoes 2 tablespoons tomato paste 2 chipotle peppers (diced is fine, or you can use fresh or canned chipotle chilies in Adobo Sauce) 2 tablespoons brown sugar For Chipotle Raspberry BBQ Sauce: 1/2 cup ketchup 1/2 cup cider vinegar 3 tablespoons brown sugar 1/2 tablespoon yellow mustard 1 tablespoon worcestershire sauce 1 tablespoon adobo sauce (from a can of chipotle chilies in adobo sauce) 2/3 cup raspberry preserves Directions: 1. Add oil to a large sauté pan over medium-high heat. Once oil is hot, add as many chicken thighs as will fit with the bone facing up. Brown for 2 to 3 minutes on each side. Once both sides are browned, add thighs to the crock pot and continue browning remaining thighs. 2. Add onions, celery, carrots, and garlic to the pan and cook until vegetables are lightly browned and onions are starting to turn translucent (if necessary, add 1 more tablespoon of olive oil to pan). Add to the crock pot, and turn it on to high heat. 3. In the pan, add wine, chicken stock, tomatoes, tomato paste, chipotle peppers, and brown sugar, and stir to combine. Cook until sugar is melted, and then pour mixture over chicken and vegetables in the crock pot. Mix contents of the crock pot so ingredients get evenly distributed, cover, and cook for 3 to 4 hours. When done cooking, remove chicken and separate meat from the bones. 4. To make BBQ sauce, add all ingredients in a small saucepan and stir over medium heat. Stir thoroughly and simmer over medium heat for 20 minutes. (If raspberry preserves have a lot of seeds, strain sauce before serving. Makes 1 1/2 cups.). Serves 6. Enjoy! WEBB’S GOLDKREST FARM Chris & Kevin Webb proudly call their 450 acres of family farmland Webbs Goldkrest Farms. It is the original Webb’s Family Farm, run by this father & son today. The founder of this four generation family farm, James Webb (photo to the right) was known as the “sweet corn king.” Chris & Kevin dedicate their lives to the 450 acre family farm that produces corn, squash, melons, strawberries, pumpkins, cucumbers, cabbage, beans, raspberries, corn stalks… and much more. The fruits, and vegetables, of their labor are ONLY sold at their store located at 3447 River Road (9J) in East Greenbush, and at large retail stores. Chris & Kevin Webb work 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. You can tell a true farmer by their hands. When Chris Webb and I speak about his farm; you can see the pride & exhaustion on his face. And his hands are proof that he farms the land that his father devoted his life to. What you need to know as the consumer is that you can buy genuine Webb Farm produce at Webbs GOLDKREST farm stand on 9J, and at local retail stores, such as Price Chopper and Hannaford. Right down from Route 9 near Rensselaer, they are conveniently located and appreciate your business. They are the original Webb farm stand that produces their own products from the land that has been in their family since 1930. Please patronize this family farm & help them pay tribute to the legacy of the original Webb farms. You may see other farm stands around town with the Webb name, but those products are not harvested by Chris & Kevin Webb in OUR TOWNE.
