The Our Towne Spotlight Shines on... Prestige Sealcoating From April to November, if the sun is shining, you can find Prestige Sealcoating working to beautify tired & faded driveways around Our Towne. Founded in 2005 by Eric Piche, Eric had the dream to be the largest sealcoater in the Capital District. With roots right here in East Greenbush, Eric began a journey that would challenge him in more ways than he could ever imagine.
As any business owner will tell you, there isn't a day that goes by in those first few years that you don't learn many lessons and grow as a business owner. With the assistance of his brother Adam, he is thriving and continues to grow. After working as a manager for a large sealcoating company for a few years, he found himself without a job after the Albany division was closed. With his experience and desire to be his own boss, he founded Prestige Sealcoating. Starting without any financial backing, Eric maintained his strong work ethic and the value of dedicating ones self to a goal. You don't quit when things get hard. You open yourself up to knowledge from others and learn from your mistakes. His family instilled in Eric, and his brother, that from working hard and being persistent, success will follow. Eric says that “when you start with nothing, everything is an experience.” "We treat all of our customers the same. Residential & Commercial jobs get the same attention to detail, commitment to quality and ultimate goal of 100% customer satisfaction. Whether it is doing a commercial job like Adirondack Tire Centers, FunPlex and America’s Best Value in East Greenbush, a church in Kinderhook, Lansingburgh Little League in Troy or a neighbor in The Pastures, we take pride in big and small jobs. All of our work and dedication to each job is consistent and appreciated." They have maintained many businesses in the Capital District and beyond into other states. Their reputation has certainly gained them many referrals and repeat customers. Eric notes that in this industry, customers should find a seal coater that has good references, updated equipment, is fully insured and uses good quality products. "The cheapest is not the best. You don't want a cheap sealer, you won’t be happy with the product or outcome." Wanting to support other local businesses, Eric only buys the best sealer from Copeland Coating in Nassau. What you can expect from Prestige Sealcoating is a professional, efficient team who will work harder for you than no other. They are very flexible with scheduling to accommodate your busy life. Working 7 days a week, they may be a little tired, but very grateful for the business. With several trucks they can fit you into the schedule in under two weeks (weather permitting). After 8 busy months of sealcoating, Prestige waits for the snow to fall so they can plow those driveways that they maintained during the summer. You can view many before & after photos on Facebook, and on their website: www.prestige-sealcoating.com. Call 518-477-6123 for an estimate today. Remember-“YOU CAN TURN YOUR DRIVEWAY FROM OLD AND CRACKED TO RICH AND BLACK” with one call. They guarantee that you will get a free estimate within 24 hours! Now that is a well run, efficient business that is certainly dedicated to customer satisfaction. Another great business that is established and operated in Our Towne. Support your local businesses!

S n or i n g ? Sl eep A p n e a ? C - Pa p I n t o l e r a n t ? The Mac-Haydn Theatre celebrates 48 years of professional musical theatre! Located in Chatham, NY, the theatre began in 1969 after co-founders Linda MacNish and Lynne Haydn contemplated, “starting a theatre or driving to Alaska.” Luckily, they decided on the former and began the classic, “let’s find a barn and put on a show” story. Linda had local roots that lead them to Columbia County and during the first years they held performances on the Chatham Fair grounds. By 1978 they had outgrown the space and opened their own location, which still remains today. Over the years many performers, designers, and technicians have gone on to Broadway, national, and international tours.

The Mac-Haydn Theatre will be finishing the 2016 season with two premiers: Sister Act (August 11–21) and The Addams Family (August 25–September 4). Sister Act is a hysterical hit based on the blockbuster movie of the same name. The score, by Alan Mencken and Glenn Slater, is rocking and gospel-packed. The Addams Family brings the classic kooky family to the stage, featuring an original story and every father’s nightmare. Wednesday Addams, the ultimate princess of darkness, has grown up and fallen in love with a sweet, smart young man from a respectable family. The show is driven by a brilliant and diverse score by Andrew Lippa and features incredible songs. Come on down to the Mac-Haydn Theatre for an exciting end to the summer! August 2016
Dear Our Towne Readers, I welcome August with a heavy heart and sadness. This past month the Schodack Central School District community lost a true leader, advocate & role model who went above and beyond with his career and in life. Superintendant Robert Horan made an amazing impact on Schodack Central School District and our community. After suffering a sudden heart attack while on vacation with his dear family, the community was beyond shocked and heartbroken. You would have never known that he was not a resident of the Schodack community. It seemed like he was at every event, supporting the kids and staff as though one of his own kids was in attendance. I was lucky to have worked with him through the years as a parent, PTO volunteer, and publisher of this magazine. He developed relationships with businesses from his leadership roles with the Rensselaer County Chamber of Commerce. I would see him at events and networking lunches outside of the school district community. How many school leaders would make time for such events? Bob Horan was there “working the room” developing community relationships that would benefit our students at Maple Hill. Bob Horan was special in so many ways. It was obvious that his ability to think “outside of the box,” make community connections and network is what improved our school programs, even in the darkest of financial times. Not many school leaders would take the time and make the effort to develop relationships with every community group and business in and beyond Schodack. With solid relationships in the community, he was able to open doors for students and teachers. Bob Horan was one of those very rare individuals who went above and beyond what was expected of him. The commitment that he made to our school district was immense. His warm smile, sense of humor and presence will be missed greatly. His efforts and dedication to progress, growth and success will not be forgotten. I am confident that his spirit will continue to be around us; to motivate others to do more, give more and care more. To go above the bare minimum. To think outside of the box when things get tough. To find a solution when there doesn’t seem to be one. To fight for what is right; and learn from mistakes. It was obvious that he was a passionate educator and believed in how a community needed to be invested in their youth. When we support the school and students, it will come back around & strengthen the whole community. Moving forward we should cherish every moment with those around us. We don’t know what the future holds. We should live life to the fullest & spend time with our family and friends. We should connect with those we love & lost, and apologize when we are wrong. We should compromise and have empathy for others. We should give our best in every situation because we should be proud, not praised. We should help others, even when they do not reciprocate or even give thanks. No matter what you do in life, why not be the best you can be? Let Mr. Horan continue to make a positive impact by inspiring all of us to give a little more, and never settle for less than the best. My condolences to his family & friends as they learn to live without that warm smile. May happy memories comfort them in this time of sorrow.

Dr. Beth Hendlin DDS “Where the only thing old fashioned is the service” Taking the time to truly evaluate and understand each patient’s overall situation and concerns is not a quality found in all professional offices these days. With massive regulations, record keeping and paperwork constraints it is easy to understand how that “old fashioned” “personal” “Dr. to patient relationship” can seem like something from the past. That is why it is refreshing to find all these classic qualities in someone like Dr. Hendlin who practices “State of the Art” “21st Century” Dental Medicine with “Fifties” personal attention and personal concern! Dr. Hendlin is down to earth and accessible and yet exudes confidence and professionalism. She understands the real world problems of her patients and realizes that the decisions made in planning treatment needs to balance medical, cosmetic, and financial considerations to assist the patient in making the best oral health choices possible. As with everything else these days’ people need to watch their bottom line making sure that they are spending their healthcare dollars wisely and getting quality dental care that will stand up. Dr. Hendlin has been practicing Dentistry for 30 years and is proud to be continuing the tradition of fine dentistry that patients have come to expect in her office at the Valatie Medical Arts Building at 1301 River St., Suite 203, Valatie NY 12184. Dr. Kenneth Boynton DMD, her predecessor and Associate says that “she has superior surgical skills.” “A rare combination of talent and compassion!” . She has multiple loyal patients from New York City that drive 2 ½ hrs each way to see her in Valatie because they couldn’t imagine seeing another Dentist. In order to provide the best possible dentistry technologically available Dr. Hendlin recently upgraded the offices digital x-ray capabilities by adding the finest Ultra High Definition Monitors, state of the art digital x-ray sensors coupled with the latest digital x-ray Software which allows her to get better quality x-rays while reducing patient exposure to radiation. In addition to updating our radiology department, the doctor and hygiene department are certified in laser treatment (therapy). This technology is allowing our providers to help treat periodontal disease as well as reduce bacteria in the mouth as part of a patients’ routine hygiene visit. Dr. Hendlin’s staff takes the time for excellence and delivers it. The welcoming smiles of the staff when they greet you and the happy smiles on the patients when they leave are a gratifying bonus. The entire staff meets in a “Huddle” every morning to discuss and plan for the coordinated care of each patient they are going to see that day. The hygiene staff can do their work knowing that every patient they see will be reviewed and discussed and examined by Dr. Hendlin. The office is open Mon. – Thurs. from 8:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M. with occasional weekend hours to better serve the community’s needs. For more information please visit our website www.bethhendlindds.com

Kinderhook Village Then & Now By Frances Ingraham Heins
In this modern life of rushing from one cookie-cutter shopping mall to another, one is drawn to the gentle pace in the historic Village of Kinderhook. The intersection at the village's heart has changed little since the time of its native son, Martin Van Buren, the eighth president of the United States, who was born in 1782. "Traditionally, this was the area in the village for a farmers market," said Ruth Piwonka, author and village historian. "The triangle used to be a lot smaller, until it was enlarged in the 19th century. The band shelter was added in the 1920s. The large brick building along the side of the triangle, featuring many small offices and shops today, was a hotel in the 1840s. It burned down in the 1880s, to be rebuilt as a knitting mill. That structure, up until almost two decades ago, was a gift store known as The Treasure Shop." Today, the intersection at the triangle maintains its own charming identity, with a rich mix of historic wood frame and brick architecture. This is helped in part because of the Village Historic Preservation Commission and because the lots are too small to accommodate large stores, nor have many changed hands, such as the 1859 brick Kinderhook Bank at the corner of Chatham and Hudson streets. The coffee and bagel shop across from the bank on Broad Street, was the hardware store, noted Piwonka. "The Eastlake woodwork was removed from half of the facade of that building, when it was divided in later years,'' said Piwonka. "Luckily, descendants saved all that trim in a nearby barn and it is being put back on." The German restaurant, next to the post office, called The Flammerie, was a grocery store and fish market in the 1840s. Many of the shops are maisonettes, where the owners or tenants live above with their own entrance. Residents and visitors gather at the intersection, which is defined by historic buildings and a landscaped triangle, for the popular farmer's market held Saturday mornings May through October. Rene Shur, a member of the Farmers Market Committee, said the current market was established approximately 19 years ago. "It was one of the first open markets in the county. The committee likes to keep the market diverse by adding new food and craft vendors, special events and nonprofit groups from the county."
Simply Clean
Picnic tables were added to the triangle for Saturday market hours. It’s also one of the many spots in and adjacent to the triangle to sit and reflect. The triangle invites people to gather. Some of the historic buildings offer indoor space for cultural events and fitness classes, said Shur. The second floor of the Village Hall next to the bank draws people for ballroom dancing, private parties, yoga and Pilates classes. “That space was used long ago for silent movies with music accompaniment,’’ added Shur. The triangle and historic fabric of Kinderhook sets it apart from other communities. Who needs to travel to destinations that all look alike? "Historic communities allow us to time travel and gather at the square,'' said Kenneth Neilson, chairman of the Village Historic Preservation Commission. "We are so fortunate to have so many surviving buildings, both great and small, in a variety of styles." The triangle is unique because Kinderhook is mainly residential. There is no commercial main street. The intersection and triangle comprise the main hub, which, in addition to seasonal activities, include dining options, a post office, antique shop and professional offices. "The village square is always where the community comes together," explained Jay DiLorenzo, president of the New York State Preservation League. "They should be rich in history and reflect the people who came before and their shared history." *Photo courtesy of Village of Kinderhook.

I used to enjoy going to the movie theater, but now I am having a hard time understanding the dialogue. Is there anything that can help?
Answer:
PODIATRIST/FOOT SPECIALISTS
Dr. Kate Kawola
Movie acoustics are difficult for lots of individuals. Many of the local movie theaters offer assistive devices that would allow patrons to read the dialogue right on the screen. These devices are known as captioned glasses. The are worn like regular glasses, and the script can be seen projected on the movie theater screen. All a person has to do is request the glasses when purchasing his or her movie ticket. A good resource to find out if your local movie theater has captioned glasses, or specific showings with closed captioning right on the screen is: www.captionfish.com .

Always reminds me of you Daryl Bart dcbart1@gmail.com
I’ve been sitting in Starbucks for a while now and no less than 3 pregnant ladies have come thru. While I didn’t have Starbucks or stylish maternity clothes when I was pregnant, I definitely recall what it was like being pregnant in the deep of the NY summer. August is an awesome time. With fresh tomatoes, the track opens, school is still far off in the distance, too many concerts to even contemplate going to, and people are generally happy! “Before” all this, I was an event planner for the Empire State Plaza and spent most of the summer outside. If you’ve ever seen the fireworks or a free concert down there...yeah, that was my gig. I started maternity leave on my due date but I was late. Tick, Tock. Where’s the baby? In all the planning, we never envisioned a late arrival. So now we were just waiting. It was now 7 days past and we went to dinner at my sister-inlaw’s, where I promptly started feeling gassy, like every 4 minutes. Labor? Nah. Just to be safe, we said our goodbyes and promised to call with news. I started freaking out on the way home. “This could be our last night out, forever! Let's just quickly stop down at the Empire State Plaza to catch the concert”. Coincidentally, the Plaza’s biggest show of the season was happening, and I spent a lot of time planning it and wanted to go. In some rare act of lunacy, he agreed. As long as I agreed to leave before the encore. Deal. Of course the question of the hour was, “So when you gonna have that baby?” “Well, I'm pretty sure I’m in labor right now, so I’m thinking tomorrow” We were walking to the car when it dawned on us. We didn't have THE BAG. You can’t go to the hospital without snacks, address book, book of funny jokes to keep the mood light (not), makeup, reading material to catch up on, CD player and CD’s, a variety of new baby clothes, and more. Besides sheets and boiling water, which I hoped the hospital would provide, the bag was all I needed. Kind of comical that we forgot it in the other car. “I’m OK with stopping home, I want to shave my legs one more time, anyway”. “You killing me Smalls” We got to the hospital in plenty of time, the delivery was long, but we were all healthy on the other side. When I found myself conscious and clear, I looked around the room and thought “Who would design a room like this? It makes no sense.” Once Joe moved all the hospital room furniture for me (yes it’s amazing what a hubby will do when a wife births a baby) I felt peace in my temporary home. Even the nurses agreed that this was a way better set up. The rest of the visit played out as usual and we took our first born home a few days later to enjoy the dogs days of summer. It’s that time again. The concerts are happening all around, and it would be nice to get out there and appreciate it all. Especially the last of our summer tomatoes. We don’t take this weather for granted and bottle the memories for when the Albany skies are not so cooperative. When that happens I’ll be the one in Starbucks having a latte, hopefully meeting all the new moms. EPILOGUE: 2 years & 9 months later, a more well planned event occurred, with no drama or fancy bag. Just us, an epidural and a beautiful daughter. Later that day, in the quiet moment alone in my room, I rang for the nurse's aide to see if she could scrounge up a turkey sandwich or some jello. She walked into the room and looked around, since I was now in the bed on the other side of the room, smiled at me and said “you've been here before”. Happy 16th Birthmonth Nate

Clip, clip, clip those long nails
A difficult task any pet owner faces is trimming nails. It’s one of those chores that many people do not feel comfortable doing, some are afraid of clipping the nails so short it bleeds. It is important, however, to keep dogs’ and cats’ nails trimmed. Long nails on dogs can be painful; they can cause an unnatural walking gait and for the toes to splay out. Sometimes nails curl and grow into the flesh. Trimming nails doesn’t have to be hard or scary for either you or your pet. There are two types of clippers: scissor and guillotine. One is not necessarily better than the other. Some people also use a sanding tool, like a Dremel. These can be great, but some pets do not like hearing its sound. Also keep styptic powder on hand for bleeding. Practice at your pet’s pace; it may take weeks before your pet is comfortable with the clipper. Whichever clipper you choose, start by pairing it with food. With the clipper in one hand, five treats in the other, let your pet smell the clipper. Each time it smells the clipper, give it a treat. Repeat the process once a day. When your pet is excited to smell the clipper, change the exercise. Instead of smelling the clipper, touch the clipper to your pet’s paw and give it a treat. Be sure to touch all four paws at least twice. When your pet is happy to have the clipper touch a paw, change the routine. This time, pick up the paw, touch the clipper to a nail and give your pet a treat. Each time you pick up the paw, touch a different toenail. Repeat until you have touched every toenail, including the dew claw. The next step is similar except this time also squeeze the clipper so it makes a clipping sound. Do not actually clip a nail, yet. Touch every toe and squeeze the clipper. As you touch each nail, be sure you are gently holding the paw and squeezing the toe as you would if you were clipping it. The final step is clipping the nail. If your pet has white nails, you can see the “quick” (the blood supply and nerve). Do not cut into the quick. Clip the excess nail tip to just below the quick. If your pet has black nails, you cannot see the quick. In that case, snip off a tiny sliver at a time and look at the cut nail. After taking off several slivers, you’ll probably see a black center in the nail; this dark core means you are getting close to the quick. Stop clipping.

Word of Mouth By Joseph R. L apinski, D.D.S.
www.LapinskiDentaL.com Dear Dr. Lapinski: At my last checkup, I was told that I have 2 cavities. Why am I still getting cavities as an adult? I thought only kids got cavities. ~Bill Dear Bill: Anyone can get a cavity. Period. Anyone with teeth, that is. The bacteria that is always present in your mouth produces an acid that causes cavities and they do not discriminate, regardless of your age. If you have teeth, then their acid can go to work on the enamel of your teeth and make a hole, thus a cavity. Eating any carbohydrate (treats plus breads, cookies, rice, potato, chips, vegetable & fruit) provides fuel for the aforementioned bacteria. As the food breaks down, the sugar in them feeds the bacteria, they produce the acid, that makes the hole, that causes the cavity. If you eat an acidic diet (including juice, soda, wine) the acidity of the foods themselves can also break down the enamel and can make you more prone to getting a cavity. This is why we suggest brushing your teeth after every meal & flossing every day - to help brush away the residual sugars, acids and anything that is left hanging around that helps make a cavity. Children may seem to get more cavities than adults, since it’s attributed to eating and brushing habits. In fact, the amount of cavities that children get has been reduced by about ½ in the 20+ years I have been practicing. The reasons can be attributed to fluoride, early intervention, dental education and access to care. (plus lots of parents that work tirelessly to ensure their kids don’t go thru what they went they - oh yes I hear the stories!) Contrary to that, cavities in adults, especially more elderly people is on the rise. Side effects of many medications makes teeth more prone to decay (dry mouth). With less saliva to wash away food particles, cavities can occur. Also, older mouths are likely to have more gum recession, from time. Recession exposes root surfaces that reach below where the enamel on the tooth stops - and since the roots are not covered in the protective enamel layer, then there is a greater chance of a cavity forming. Dry mouth and exposed roots are a very bad combination. You may also not know that you have a cavity if it’s small. Early on, most cavities have no symptoms. As the symptoms become more pronounced it means the cavity is deeper. It is much better to deal with a cavity where it is small rather than when it is larger or deeper. Dental problems really only get worse with time. So keep brushing and flossing. See your dentist at regular intervals. As always, ask your questions and communicate with your dental team. We want your smile to last a lifetime www.LapinskiDental.com DrJoe@LapinskiDental.com
