The Our Towne Spotlight shines on... Cathy Graziano is a real estate veteran and the proud owner of the RE/MAX Platinum office located at 52 North Greenbush Road. Since starting her career almost 30 years ago, Cathy has been involved in millions of dollars of home sales and purchases. She has lived in the Capital District all her life and in East Greenbush for over 30 years, where she raised her family. If her name sounds familiar, it is because she is a regular contributor to Our Towne Magazine. Since opening in November 2016, the office has grown as new agents have joined her team. I asked Cathy what prompted her to open her own business at this point in her career? “The entrepreneurial aspect of Re/Max is what attracted me to the brand, as well as the opportunity to build my own business and make it possible for my agents to be successful. As part of the No. 1 brand in real estate, we provide our team of professionals with the most tools and latest technology and the largest network in the business. This is the right formula for success for individuals or a team. RE/MAX also allows agents to keep a larger percent of the earned commissions; so our hard work is rewarded by the brand." Cathy worked for other Real Estate companies in the past, but RE/MAX is the one that sparked her interest and motivated her to open her very own office. "We work very hard to provide clients who are selling a home with the most positive real estate experience possible. We can help home sellers understand buyer expectations and establish realistic pricing for your home under current market conditions. Our goal is to leverage our knowledge and experience to help you get the best price the market will support while still selling your home in a reasonable period of time. We have state of the art web tools, technology and marketing materials. Let our expertise and tools be your greatest asset." Cathy previously managed a local real estate office where she hired and trained many agents who are now quite successful in the field. Cathy is a member of the Greater Capital Region Association of Realtors, New York State (NYSAR) & National Association (NAR) of Realtors. She is also a Graduate of the Realtor Institute (GRI) & was president of the NYS GRI Chapter in 2001. Cathy currently serves on NYSAR’s Professional Standards Committee & Education Management Committee.
We are always open to adding professional agents who are interested in growing their business, or starting a new career in Real Estate. Please call Cathy at 518-496-2297 for a confidential conversation.
RE/MAX PLATINUM
Our Mission:
We are dedicated to providing agents with the best office environment, meaningful support, financial rewards and the opportunity for growth. We strive to attract and retain the most knowledgeable, ethical and productive associates possible. This, in turn, will assure the best service to our customers, clients and the general public.
Cathy has been involved in the local community as well. She served as a member & past president of the East Greenbush Central School District Board of Education. She is a past president of the East Greenbush Education Foundation. As part of the RE/MAX system, Graziano has consistently been a top agent contributor to the Children’s Miracle Network in New York state, making a donation with each sale of a listed or sold property that directly supports the Children’s Hospital at Albany Medical Center. In 2015 she was the #1 "Miracle Agent" in New York State for being the largest agent contributor of all the RE/ MAX agents in New York State. The RE/MAX Platinum office continues to participates in the Miracle Home program and believes in the amazing things happening at our local Children’s Hospital at Albany Medical. We want to help our local hospitals continue to make miracles for kids in the community. When a home is listed as a Miracle Home, it signifies that RE/MAX Platinum will make a donation to Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals when that property sells!
Your home may be your biggest personal investment. One of the most important decisions you will make when buying or selling your home is who you will trust to assist & advise you. RE/MAX Platinum Agents will help you understand the process, navigate the details and keep you on track in today’s complex, fast-paced real estate market. For more information about the new Re/Max Platinum office, call 720-3400 or stop in at 52 North Greenbush Road.

Ask the Audiologist By Madison Hearing Center
Question:
I’m having trouble with moisture in my hearing aid and it sometimes acts strange, or seems not to be working. What can I do to prevent this problem?
Answer:

Summer months bring on heat and humidity. This can often cause problems for hearing aid wearers. When a person perspires, the moisture from our body can cause droplets of water and salt to Dr. Patrick Bergmann accumulate in the components of the hearing aid, causing the aids to act strange. An easy solution is to use a desiccant dryer. This is a small container a patient puts the hearing aids in when they are not being used and it removes all the moisture from the aids. It's similar to the little packets that are in an electronic box when you purchase an item. These desiccant dryers are reusable and can be recharged by putting them in your microwave or oven for a short period of time. The advantage of these dryers is they will prolong the life of your hearing aid. Some dryers sanitize in addition to wicking away moisture.
Open Menu All Day
Dryers can range from $10 - $150, but I've found the $15 option usually does the job. If you're having moisture issues, speak to your audiologist to find out what is available.

By Dennis DeLisle For nearly 2 1/2 hours on a (hopefully) clear August afternoon we are in for a treat -- the sun, as seen from Rensselaer County, will begin to darken from the shadow of the moon at 1:20pm; at 2:40pm, only 33 percent of the sun will be visible as a large crescent. By 4:00pm, the event will conclude as the sun returns to its full brilliance! Mark your calendars for August 21st!
Advertised as a total solar eclipse, ‘totality’ will occur only within a narrow path in the United States about 65 miles wide from Madras OR, winding southeast through the heartland to Columbia, SC. Given our location, the maximum shadow of the moon on the sun will be limited to 67 percent; therefore, do not look directly at the sun before, during or after the eclipse unless you are using certified solar viewing glasses. Be especially careful with binoculars and cameras -- these must be used only with proper solar filters. Finally, ensure children understand the danger of looking directly at the sun. Without proper protection, serious eye damage is possible, including blindness, in a short period of time! For more information visit https://www.space.com/topics/solar-eclipse!

August 2017 Dear Our Towne Readers, I don’t think I will ever get used to back to school sales starting mid-summer. We just go used to our summer schedule focusing on fun and relaxation. Now that it is August, I guess we need to start gearing up for the new school year. With a High School Senior and Freshman, we will be busy! It seems like just yesterday I was driving the girls to Maple Hill Preschool and shopping at Baby Gap. (Big sigh). There are many fantastic programs and opportunities for kids to expand their world in this issue. Yep, it’s already time to think about kids activities for the school year. Our Towne has many great options for your consideration. I am sad to see two small, locally owned businesses closing their doors. Good Buy Books and NYMarket & Speciality Foods are now closed. Anytime as small, family owned & operated business closes, my heart sinks. I wish Lynne and Vinny the best of luck and good health in their retirement! Nicki Hindes, owner of NYSpeciality Market will continue to sell imported international goods and local foods on the web and in a new (shared) location, when she finds one. Please “LIKE” Our Towne Magazine (Rensco) on Facebook and stay in the loop. As always, I encourage readers to shop small and local. I see those beautiful bouquets at the grocery store, and the dirt cheap jewelry online. But, if we don’t shop local, businesses around our small towns will close up. It is a reality. It certainly takes more effort to support the small shop down the street, than to shop online or pick everything up at the big chain store. I can only ask that you think twice and make the effort to shop small and local. It is my goal to connect you to organizations and businesses in the community. Please e-mail me details about community events you are involved with; as I am committed to donate 20% of the magazine to “connect the community.” Enjoy the rest of your summer! Thank you for reading Our Towne Magazine.

Castleton-on-Hudson Main Street Association August Update. The Main Street Association is excited to announce MAIN STREET DAY ON SEPTEMBER 9TH BETWEEN 11-3. Main Street Day is dedicated to raising awareness and funds for Main Street and the Main Street Association by highlighting what was once available and what could be in the future. There will be much to look forward to on Main Street day. First, our Memories and Wishes campaign will highlight the Main Street of yesterday and tomorrow. We will have photos and stories of Main Street in its heyday side by side with plans and photos of the Main Street of our dreams. Also, Chris Peters will have his famous local slideshow at the Village Inn, it is sure to bring back fond memories. Second, MSA is about you, and our ears are wide open on Main Street Day. Share your Main Street ideas on our suggestion wall or drop us a note in the suggestion box. Main Street Association board members will be stationed at tables ready to talk with you about Main Street and how we can work together to bring life to Main Street. Last, we have plans for fun, food, and music. Burgers and dogs, popcorn and snacks, and specials at The Village Inn and The Store will feed your body as we feed your mind. For fun, we will have face painting, sidewalk chalk along the river, Plinko, and yard games like Yahtzee and Tic Tac Toe. Three local bands will keep us entertained throughout the day. We are excited and energized to bring this to Main Street. We hope to see you there. Main Street Day isn’t all we’re up to. Our mission is visible change and visible change is around the corner. MSA has raised over $1,800 to install a nautical flagpole. This amount exceeds our target and we are moving forward to install the flagpole before fall! Stay tuned as we work with the Village to make this a reality. We hope you’ll join us. Stop by www.castletonmainstreet.org or email mainstreetcastleton@gmail.com

BAD BREATH COULD BE A BAD SIGN
Get that dog a breath mint! Sometimes dogs (and cats) can develop terrible breath. The smelly odor could be a sign of periodontal disease. By 3 years old, many dogs show signs of this disease. It starts with bacteria in the mouth. The bacteria forms plaque, a substance that sticks to your dog’s teeth. Over time, the dog’s saliva hardens the plaque and creates tartar or calculus. Periodontal disease occurs when bacteria finds its way under the gum. Eventually, the tartar and plaque will form under the gum line, creating an opportunity for bacteria to damage the tissue surrounding the teeth. If left untreated, the dog may eventually lose its teeth, but that is not the only risk. Periodontal disease can lead to infections and heart, liver and kidney issues. You will likely see the first signs of periodontal disease, even if you don’t realize it. In addition to bad breath, you may notice your pet has gingivitis or red, swollen gums. Sometimes, the gums will bleed if you rub your finger across the gum line. However, you may not see periodontitis, bone loss around the teeth. A key fact some pet owners may not realize is periodontal disease is completely preventable. It starts with brushing your dog’s teeth at home. Brushing your dog’s teeth may seem intimidating but it’s not difficult. Using toothpaste made specially for dogs (don’t use human toothpaste) and a brush (or face cloth wrapped around your finger), gently rub your dog’s teeth and gums. Be sure you brush the molars as well as the front teeth. If your dog hates having its teeth brushed, there are some other options your veterinarian can recommend. Second, there’s no replacement for an annual dental check. It only takes a few minutes for your dog’s veterinarian to examine teeth and gums for those first red-flag signs. The examination usually takes place with your dog’s annual check-up. If a professional dental cleaning is recommended, don’t hesitate to have it done. It may seem frightening, but the process is safe. At Nassau, we are fortunate to have Dr. Thomas Phillips, a fellow in the Academy of Veterinary Dentistry, and Tina Patton Cookingham, a veterinary technician specialist in dentistry. Under their care, the dog is anesthetized. A full dental examination is performed and x-rays may be taken to see what is happening beneath the gum line to the bone and teeth. While sedated, the dog’s heart rate and temperature are monitored. Power and hand dental scalers are used to remove the tartar from each tooth. The clean teeth are polished to help delay the formation of plaque and tartar. If necessary, other procedures can be performed. Recovery is generally quick and most pets are in and out of our clinic on the same day. It can be that simple. Once your pet is back home with fresh breath, you have a fresh start to avoiding this preventable disease. Visit Nassau’s Facebook page to see a short video of a dog having its teeth cleaned. Every lane now has automatic bumper bowling, so the bumpers come up for the kids, and lower automatically for the rest of the family! Lightweight balls and ramps make it enjoyable for kids also!. We also have a full bar available for the adults. They specialize in Kid’s Birthday Parties, FUN-draisers, and corporate or group outings. East Greenbush Bowl has a popular “JR League” that meets on Friday afternoon or on Saturday mornings. They are the next generation of bowlers. Students receive lessons & coaching throughout the season- this league is a competitive sport. The season begins in the Fall and runs the course of the school year. You don’t need to have any experience bowling- just a desire to learn and take part in the program. Bowling is both an individual and team sport (because you bowl with a handicap). Bill Cornell adds that it is a “great option for the ‘un-athletic’ child. Everyone can bowl! There are many opportunities to join tournaments where young adults earn scholarship money.” The Bowling Center donates $2500 per year towards a scholarship fund, and more is awarded eash year as fund raiser are run. Bowling is the fastest growing youth sport & there is a great deal of money to be won for college. East Greenbush Bowl offers many specials and programs. The most popular program is “Kids Bowl Free.” This program is designed by bowling centers to give back to the community and provide a safe, secure, and fun way for kids to spend time this summer. Register for this program and each child can bowl two games for FREE every day of the summer. Why not? You will receive e-mails regarding other promotions, such as upgrade to a family pass for under $30.00. What else can a family do (unlimited) for the summer for under $30.00? I can’t think of anything! As part of the “Kids Bowl Free” program, you are also invited to participate to free clinics & group lessons. You can easily register at: http://www.kidsbowlfree.com. As you plan your summer activities and camps, keep in mind that East Greenbush Bowl offers camps taught by experienced bowlers who are mostly teachers that are off for the summer. For the first time ever, they will be running for two full weeks: August 7th and August 14th. Sign-up for one of the two weeks, or both! Suitable for ages 4-14, EG Bowling Camp is operational from 8AM until 5PM. Campers and their parents choose whether they will be in attendance from 8AM until 4PM or 9AM until 5PM, depending on their schedules. If needed, they do offer 8AM until 5PM for an additional $10 per child per week. EG Bowling Camp offers a wide variety of daily activities to keep children engaged the entire time they are with us! We will do arts and crafts in addition to supplying bowling instruction, lunch, and a snack each and every day. They also have a breakfast option for $10 for the whole week! T-shirts (a $10 value) are FREE this year for those who participate in both weeks of camp. The camp is co-directed by Kelly and Becky Hewitt. Mouth
By Joseph R. Lapinski, D.D.S.
Dear Dr. Lapinski: I was recently sent to see an an oral surgeon for a consultation on an implant to replace a missing tooth and he wanted to get a CAT scan of the area. I already had a full mouth x-ray. Do I really need this? Gary J. Dear Gary: Thank you for your question. In dentistry, the x-ray is one of our best diagnosing tools and it can reveal many things that we simply can’t see when we look into your mouth, allowing us to potentially see conditions under the gums, like the length of your roots, abscesses, cavities, fractures and bone loss. However, the x-ray is a two dimensional image. Flat. On an xray we can’t see depth. And for implants, the bone depth and surrounding structures are key elements. A CAT scan (CT) provides a three-dimensional image. While it’s most commonly associated with other body parts and types of medicine, the onset of implant dentistry has made the CT an increasingly important tool for success. For implants, we are looking for “good candidates” ideally someone who has the space and bone density to receive the implant and heal so that it becomes an integrated part of your jaw bone. The CT will generally give the practitioner much more information than a typical x-ray. We can locate nerves, the exact point where the sinus cavity meets the upper jaw, bone width or other critical information that could potentially interfere with successful implant placement. We’re talking in millimeters here and the more accurate information we have going into the procedure, the better experience and outcome for the patient. Note: a CAT scan is not needed in every single case and x-rays can suffice to proceed with many treatment plans. However, surgeons/dentists are relying on it more and more. This is a tool in the arsenal now that helps avoid problems and provide better care for the patient. Downsides? Not many. There’s the cost of a CAT scan. While prices have come down significantly over the past 10 or 15 years, it’s still an added treatment expense. Not every office will have a CT machine and you may need to got to an imaging center. Lastly, there is some additional radiation exposure for a CT is certainly more than an x-ray. (On a side note, I'm scheduled for my own CAT scan next month before I get my own implant). All in all, the benefits outweigh the downsides when it comes to implant success. If you are unsure about getting a CT ask your dental professional why it is necessary and if you can safely be treated without it. Good luck with your treatment. As always, ask your dentist if you have questions. We can’t help you if we don’t know. DrJoe@LapinskiDental.com

Synopses: Jean Valjean, former convict and current incognito town mayor/ factory owner, after having served a jail sentence for thievery, is tortured thru the years that he’s been hiding his true identity, and in an attempt at eternal redemption, spends a lifetime running from the equally tortured if not singularly minded, Inspector Javert. Throw in a prostitute dying of consumption, a few orphans, a little bawdy humor, a revolution, a suicide, of course true love, redemption and some serious tears, and Boom! Epic! Oh, and they’re in France. Ok, you’re up to speed. So here we are, in London, staring down the theater at 8:07pm, knowing we could likely walk up to the box office and see our favorite show, again. We look at each other. Should we, shouldn’t we? The kids vote it down because we’re a little late and would miss the opening number. Which in hindsight is a silly reason, but it was good enough in the moment. Merely having the possible moment, caused us to break out in a little Les Mis sing-a-long right there in the streets of London. Yes, it’s a thing. In our car, you’re more likely to hear us all singing “I Dreamed a Dream” or “Master of the House” over Moana & Frozen, anyday. (although they’re good in a pinch) #CarSingers #WeSoundGood So, the morning after this near Mis (get it?), I’m checking my email and read a blog titled: “10 Ways To Fall Asleep in 3 minutes or Less”. Now, I get you’re like “whoa, say what?” Musical theater to a Gmail advice column. I’ll get there. Before this moment, an article like this like would have been instantly deleted and I’d be reminding myself to unsubscribe. I open it. Over the years, it’s been a running joke between me and Joe that my sleep habits are “a gift”. If I were to suggest that tonight will be “the night” I discover insomnia, because I’m a little “too awake”. He scoffs, and certainly eye rolls, in the dark. I hear everyone at work lamenting their middle of the night episodes, scrolling facebook, watching movies, QVC. If I have to turn over a few times, I always think, tonight’s the night. And then I wake up tomorrow, spared another night of iinfomercials. Until now. This email KNEW I needed it. My sleep gift is on summer vacation. Replaced with an all too ironic turn of events only kindred women can understand, the night sweats. The elusive pattern. The onset. The cruel physiological joke that is aging. Couple that with my travel schedule and I haven’t had a regular visit to the bathroom in about three weeks (sorry - but true). Add the stubborn visits to my scale, that seems stuck on a very unpopular number, regardless of my healthy shakes, workout routine and excellent water drinking habits. And, thanks to the prankster gods of the ticking clock, who inconveniently made all the menus, and maps, way too small for me to see, forcing me to actually buy cheater glasses on vacation and make sure we didn’t unintentionally end up on a train to Italy.
So, as I sat there, reading, and hoping, that some random LA blogger had the magic answers to my midnight wake-ups and need for fresh jammies, the only thing that’s in my head and on repeat is Jean Valjean. (remember him from above??) Act 1 and his aria worthy “WHO AM I?” I mean seriously? Who am I and when will we go back to the regularly scheduled programming? Winding down this first half century I find that there are many things that are unfamiliar, all at once causing me some minor distresses. I keep reminding myself that although I don’t love the hot flashes, or the glasses, that this will pass. I’m confident the sleep pattern is an anomaly, and I know for sure I’ll get the chance to see Les Mis again. Until then, I know that baseball tournament and college visit road trip sing alongs will have to suffice. Like Valjean, I will take the stage for Act II victorious, redeemed and at peace and will not let a few hormonal moments make me call in the understudy. #OneDayMore
