The Our Towne Spotlight Shines on... HL Fuel Co.

Inc.

When shopping around for home heating fuel & propane, you will certainly find that HL Fuel & Propane will not only BEAT any competitors price, he will also provide the full service that you would expect from a business that is celebrating 33 years in business. From the sale of your fuel or propane, to the service that may be needed on your furnace, HL Fuel employs the professionals to take care of your needs from start to finish. Harry Hicks, the proud owner of HL Fuel & Propane is honestly one of the most down to earth, focused, smart and kind business owners I have met. He personally manages the finest details of his rapidly growing business. Born, raised and schooled in New Lebanon, Harry learned early on the importance of solid relationships with customers, built on trust, and consistently offering excellent products and service. Without the customer, we would not be here. "Those relationships build the business, and always improving the products and service is what keeps them." His grandfather, Harry B. Hicks, started Hicks Lumber Co Inc. (hence, the letters "HL" before Fuel and Propane) at that Route 20 location in 1929, and Harry caught the solid work ethic and entrepreneurial spirit from his father and grandfather at a very young age. Harry spent some time in the 70’s and early 80’s in the communications industry owning and operating H L Communications selling and installing satellite systems, but the challenges of the ever-changing heating business continued to intrigue him. In 1985, he officially started HL Fuel, turning what was his own home there on the site into the offices and building another house for himself nearby. In spite of the difficulties of the business, Harry says he has never regretted that move. What is most challenging? Harry notes that "it used to be easier to predict the ups of winter and downs of summer" When I started this business in the 80s, it was less volatile. You never could completely control Mother Nature, of course, but now it is even more imperative to have much better buying plans just to keep costs marginally under control. With thousands of long term customers, you can be guaranteed satisfaction. When you visit their office at 1232 Route 20 in West Lebanon, you get a sense of the scope of their professional and progressive operation The phones ring constantly and people drop in and out, but everyone remains calm and friendly in the midst of all the activity. They serve Columbia County and southern Rensselaer County, but they have many customers in Berkshire County, Massachusetts and Bennington County, Vermont as well. Over the years, Harry has developed buying strategies and operations techniques that enable him to offer fuel and propane at very competitive prices. They do not go through any unnecessary middle men or extra steps to provide their customers with product, so this streamlining saves money for the customer. HL Fuel also service and do heating system installations for all their accounts in house and do not contract the work out to others, so you always have consistent and managed care of your system from start to finish, 24 Hours a day. Aside from their excellent prices and efficient operation, there are many long-term employees who make dealing with HL Fuel and HL Propane a pleasure. Harry has employed about 15 to 20 local people full time and seasonally, but relies on his experienced core staff to assist him year round in providing great customer service and follow-through. Harry is a very hands-on guy and very accessible. It takes a great team of people to deliver such great service. Far too many to name individually, but a few include Tina Lawless Customer Service representatives, Service Manager Wayne Martin, Operations Manager-Book Keeper/ Leeann Krutziger, and Darlene Parkins Dispatcher Bob Safford. Last, but of course not least, is Harry's wife, Beth, who serves as Vice President and has her hands in all of the areas of operations, as Harry does. She also keeps watch over their three adorable shih-tzus – Charlotte, Tiffany, and the younger Lilly (who is always in the office greeting anyone HL Fuel guarantees you great service and they will who walks in the door). BEAT any competitors price. Guaranteed.

Lots of companies promise you things.

Now is really the time to review your heating system, get whatever service or maintenance you need done, and get yourself ready for the colder months ahead. HL Propane and HL Fuel offer many Prepaid, budget and capped price plans and can help you determine what the best course of action is for your particular circumstances. As a convenience to their customers, they have a toll free number and a website through which you can keep track of your account, order fuel or propane, pay your bill or buy a contract. You are welcome to manage your account online or call the office. They can also set up automatic delivery for you if desired so you will never be left in the cold. The cold days of winter are RIGHT around the corner. And if the Farmer's Almanac is correct, this is going to be another brutal winter! Call now to lock in your price for the season! Harry advises not to wait until you are absolutely frozen to check out your system and prepare. They have 24-hour emergency call service, but those kinds of calls are never ideal for anybody and are easily avoided! It’s always best to know what your options are. Nobody likes to think of heating costs of any kind, but if you are heating badly or inefficiently, you are not saving, but wasting money. Efficiency is one area proven to be better not only for warmth but for the cost of that warmth! You don't want to be "left out in the cold!" The main number of HL Fuel and HL Propane is (518)794-9066. Their easy access website is www.hlfuel. com, and the toll-free number is 877-794-9066. There is always a real person at the office on Route 20 to assist you as well. The office is open Monday through Friday from 8am to 4pm. Please stop by and to discuss your fuel needs!

When you choose a service plan with the H. L. Fuel Co., you can rest easy knowing that your family and home are well protected. HL Fuel will respond to your emergency calls 24 hours a day. It will not take us more than three (3) hours to arrive at your home if you have no heat. In most cases we will arrive sooner. You will not run out of oil while on automatic. We will use our own technicians, not subcontractors, to service your system. We will always use professional testing equipment, not guesswork, when we do your tune-up, to assure maximum efficiency. Your calls will always be answered by a person, not an answering machine. Energy Loan Special Financing for Energy Star and Energy Saving Home Improvements.

The 20th of every month!

August 2018

Dear Our Towne Readers, As we continue to enjoy a very hot and humid summer, I am forced to rethink my retirement plans. I am down to 9 years...so I must get busy researching options! In the past I have been committed to moving to a palm tree paradise. This July, has certainly tested my tolerance to humidity; and I can honestly say I have failed miserably. The desire to see palm trees on a daily basis is most definitely on the list of wants; but I need to keep the humidity down as it aggravates my Rheumatoid Arthritis. It’s an evil disease that truly effects me every day. Rain, humidity and the change of seasons can knock me into a flare up and keep me in bed for days. So, if anyone has a suggestion, please share! The Town of East Greenbush has Music in the Park every Tuesday, a free movie night on August 10th and a huge end of summer jam with The Refrigerators and Fireworks on August 31st. Please see the details on page 22. There are many free community events throughout the magazine to keep you entertained and connected to others in Our Towne. Libraries offer workshops, classes and activities for toddlers to senior citizens. They always welcome new faces and of course love volunteers. Our family takes full advantage of the local libraries; saving us hundreds of dollars on music, books & movies every year. Every month I am committed to listing local library information in the magazine so that you can be aware of the (free) opportunities to grow and gather in Our Towne communities. . As I write this, we are getting our daughter ready for college. I anticipate being very emotional after dropping her at school on August 19th. Doesn’t it seem like nothing ever changes and then one day you wake up and everything is different?

Family Foot Care, P.l.l.C. Podiatric Medicine & Surgery Painful toe? It could be an ingrown nail. When a toenail is ingrown, it is curved and grows into the skin, usually at the sides of the nail. This digging in can irritate the skin, often creating pain, redness, swelling and warmth in the toe. If the nail breaks through the skin, bacteria may enter and cause an infection. Causes of ingrown nails can be hereditary, due to trauma, improper trimming, shoes or socks that are too tight or short, or other nail conditions such as fungal nails. Sometimes initial treatment for ingrown toenails can be safely performed at home. However, home treatment is strongly discouraged if an infection is suspected or for those who have medical conditions such as diabetes, nerve damage in the foot or poor circulation. If you do not have an infection or any of the above medical conditions, you can soak your foot in room-temperature water (adding Epsom salt may be recommended by your doctor) and gently massage the side of the nail fold to help reduce the inflammation.

By Lapinski Dental

Dear Dr. Lapinski, I don’t usually get any cavities but the last time I went to the dentist, he said that I had 8 cavities. I think I’m getting scammed. I don’t understand why this would happen. Dear Patient, I can appreciate your frustration. Having that many cavities diagnosed at one time can be a shock. I find that when a patient who has had regular dental care then suddenly has that many cavities, it is usually due to either changes in diet or medication, and you are simply not aware of the impacts. I have 2 examples to share that occurred recently in my own office. In one case, a patient started enjoying Prosecco, a sweet bubbly wine, at night. The patient was swishing each sip in between his teeth to enhance the flavor. The higher concentration of sugar and the swishing, kept that sugar in contact with the teeth and he ended up with many cavities. Add that to the fact that at night, our our saliva flow decreases, it put the patient at a higher risk. Since saliva is very protective to our teeth and washes away sugar, particles of food and drink, in this case the combination of timing and the wine helped cause the decay. My second example is a patient that had increased dry mouth due to a new medication. In response to the discomfort, he began sucking on breath mints to assist in keeping his mouth moist, and feel more normal. Unfortunately, the mint contained sugar, and essentially had sugar in his mouth all day long. While it temporarily solved the dry mouth, he ended up with several cavities within a short period of time requiring extensive work. Note: There are many categories of medication that can cause dry mouth although not everyone will have that side effect. Some of the more common ones are blood pressure medications, anti-depressants and chemotherapy. Staying well hydrated with plain water without anything sugary or acidic added, is your best solution. Sometimes medications need to switched because the symptoms are so severe. These cases are rare but you will need to speak to the physician about a safe substitution. Never stop a medication unless you have consulted with you doctor. Lastly, I’d like to mention that there are instances where patients are diagnosed with extensive dental work stemming from lifestyle, neglect, bad timing and inconsistent prevention. Your best prevention is flossing, brushing, and a healthy diet. I can tell you from experience that we are a profession that crosses our fingers and hopes that our patients are in the no-cavity club. We try to approach each individual situation with care so that we can solve the problem, thru dental work, changes in behaviors and education. I’m sorry you feel like your provider is “scamming” you, and hopefully there is a logical solution. As a consumer, you can always elect to get a second opinion. You should feel like you can trust anyone that is taking care of your health and that you can raise any concerns so that you can arrive at a solution. Hopefully you can trace back to the source of your problem and help prevent any future cavities. Good luck! Keep asking your questions. We are here to help you keep your smile for a lifetime. “Gazing Up & Looking Back” By Dennis DeLisle

The astronomical highlight this month is a meteor shower (“the Perseids”) that peaks on the night of August 12th. Meteors are formed when space debris as small as a grain of sand bursts into our atmosphere and burns brightly enough to be seen by the naked eye. A meteor shower occurs when the orbit of Earth around the sun passes through a cloud of debris ejected by a comet; in this case, the comet Switft-Tuttle. My first memory of the Perseids is fishing at night from shore on a pond near Ticonderoga while camping with my family in the late 1960s and catching a glimpse of a bright streak in the sky. Gazing up, a brighter explosion of light raced across the jet-black sky, disappearing behind the stand of pine trees surrounding the water. Putting my rod down, I spent the next hour sitting and watching, marveling at this silent fireworks display. Create your own memories this year by lying back in a lawn chair or sleeping bag and looking skyward to the north-east horizon. A moonless night this year could provide us with a spectacular display if Mother Nature keeps the clouds away.

We are always looking for donations so please feel free to stop by and see our 'offerings' and how we make a small dent in our community's well being!

July has been busy with Independence Day in the Kinderhook square, Veterans Resource Fair, Little League picnic and much more! I’ll start off by saying the Independence Day Peoples Parade was a great event with our Assemblyman, Jake Ashby as our guest speaker. We were honored to have him be part of Kinderhook’s annual tradition. Today I attended Congressman Faso’s Veterans Resource Fair and had a chance to meet groups and agencies who provide benefits and services to Veterans. The Veterans community is an amazing group of individuals who are always available to help each other out. If you have spare time, think about donating it to help where needed. I suggest you attend a concert fundraiser for Patriot Flight Inc. Sun Mountain Fiddler will perform at Brookview Station Winery (www.localwineevents.com). Many have expressed concern about the stretch of Route 203 between Valatie and Niverville. The craters were patched on July 12. We all know this is a temporary fix and I am working to get a timeframe as to when the road will get replaced. More to come on that. Great news—Hannaford Valatie installed the prescription pill drop box on July 3. Special thanks to NYS DEC and Valatie Hannaford Supermarkets for providing this to the community. They DO accept liquid prescriptions.

Keratitis Keratitis is inflammation of the cornea. Keratitis may cause pain in the eye, light sensitivity, tearing and blurred vision. Retinal Vasculitis Retinal vasculitis is inflammation of the blood vessels of the retina. Common signs of this disorder are painless, gradual vision loss. Question:

By Madison Hearing Center

Are there rechargeable hearing aids?

Answer:

Market data suggests many hearing aid users do not like having to change the batteries in their hearing aids regularly. In the recent years there have been some developments in rechargeable hearing aids and rechargeable batteries for hearing aids. By Dr. Dara Kelly At this point most of the major hearing aid manufacturers are offering at least one rechargeable hearing aid option. Currently, all available rechargeable hearing aids are the behind the ear (BTE) style hearing aids. There are two main choices when it comes to rechargeable hearing aid batteries: lithium ion batteries or silver zinc batteries.

The hearing aids that use lithium ion batteries are fully encased, meaning there is no battery door and so the battery cannot be changed by the user or the audiologist. This style is ideal for users who perspire a lot or who work in dusty, dirty environments as there is less of a chance for moisture and debris to get into the hearing aid and cause issues. Right now, the manufacturers using this technology include Signia and Phonak. The hearing aids that are using silver zinc batteries are able to do so by using a kit to retrofit the hearing aids with alternative battery doors made specifically for recharging a silver zinc battery. These battery doors have contacts to allow for charging when placed in the charger that accompanies the retrofit kit. These hearing aid can be used with traditional batteries in an emergency. Manufacturers utilizing this technology include Oticon, Widex, ReSound, and Starkey. Any rechargeable hearing aid regardless of the battery type or manufacturer is going to need to be charged regularly. A full charge will get anywhere between 16 and 24 hours of battery life in the hearing aid (depending on brand and battery type). Typically, users charge their hearing aids when they are sleeping. To charge the hearing aids, the whole hearing aid is placed in a charger, without having to remove the battery from the hearing aid. Rechargeable hearing aids are a great option for people with dexterity issues or for users who do not want to have the hassle of changing a battery on a weekly basis!

The Road Less Travelled

He is not amused. We’ve now traveled almost 20 miles into a wilderness that is leaving a dusty trail, still havent seen another car but we did see a herd of Elk. That was cool, and I would have definitely missed it if I was playing my stupid game. Reminded once again to simply “look up, be present.”

By Daryl Bart

We were driving through a forest on the other side of the country. We had simply entered our next destination into the rental car’s gps, confirming it with google maps. With all electronics in agreement, we took off from Mt. Rainier headed for Oregon

No radio signal so our playlist comes in handy - a little Clapton unplugged, some Peter Gabriel, U2 & Bruce. And I find myself wishing there was an atlas in the car.

I can remember past times when I had to pull over, unfold a ridiculously large map, that I had the foresight of obtaining, and literally drawing out the route. One of my “ah-ha” moments was getting an atlas of the entire country to keep in my car. On road trips, I’d mark the current page but then as co-pilot entertainment, I’d flip back and forth to other states and places that we could someday visit.

Then I started writing these notes. The kids stopped arguing and thankfully it was still light enough to see the both the forest and the trees These impossibly tall trees that have shaded this place for a millennia. The pine needles were so very green and the sky so blue. The clouds so white. And although we were still more alert for any obstacles, this road less travelled seemed to put us all in a more peaceful place.

The atlas was the bucket list. I remember thinking things like, “OMG, thats where Syracuse, San Antonio, Baja is?” or “wow I pictured Las Vegas so much farther north in my head”. Those road trips, that map, confirming the destination, having to carefully come up with alternatives if a road was blocked, or if there was traffic ahead that seemed to extend for miles. There was no recalculating app telling me that the route would have increased congestion and it automatically updating my arrival time to reflect the change in traffic or offering alternatives.

Back when we were approaching options for Nathan’s graduation we asked what would he’d like as a gift. He wanted a trip to the Pacific Northwest. Why?, we asked. He simply said, “I’ve never been there” His road to college has been a rigorous one. He’s done all the right things, worked hard, played the sports, achieved the accolades and followed the path we not only set for him, but expected him to follow, in his supposed best interest, but also in ours, validating our parenting, giving him all the opportunities we thought we wanted for him.

These days, my co-pilot activities usually amount to flipping between the mapped route on my phone, then “googling” a fact that comes up in conversation: “Why is Napa the best place to grow Cabernet grapes?” “What day do the Giants play at home in December?” “Best Gluten Free restaurants in Seattle” “Where’s the closest Starbucks?”

But as we drove together thru this ancient forest, without a map, together, it was clear that somehow we needed the reminder that life has no atlas, that going somewhere, just to go, is ok, that the most beautiful things show up without an invitation, that most chaos isn’t planned and simply needs to be navigated through and that the outcome, while in our sights, might be obscured by a dusty road. Oh, and always go with Joe, because if the zombies show up, he’ll have an escape route in mind.

Having the world of answers at my fingertips suits my inquisitive nature. Being able to click over to check my email, or my facebook, make reminders or play my stupid, very stupid, I should really delete that app game off my phone, has become the new passenger seat norm. But here, in this forest, there is no cell service. In fact, although our end destination was doubly confirmed, the map screen has now gone blank. The phone is not sending any info about the route and we’re at the mercy of the last driving assignment which was to follow this road for 32 miles.

Dog Walking & Pet Sitting

Road is an overstatement. Well, it is a road, but it isn’t paved. And there aren’t any signs, or other cars or landmarks to know for certain that we’re heading in the right direction. The gps, which I am still convinced really only works when you know exactly where you are going (and in this case the Washington state National Forest was a first for me), is no longer serving its purpose. Joe, usually very calm, starts gripping the wheel a little tighter, navigating the literal bumps in the road. Trying a little levity, I ask “What are you thinking?” PS...If I haven’t mentioned it before, I married MacGuyver, so I started laughing knowing that he was hard at work assembling an escape plan, for all the scenarios: the flat tire, the murderous mountain man, and the Walking Dead zombies. He was assessing our supplies and mentally mapping what would take to walk to civilization and would his ever present swiss army knife be enough to protect the family and could we start a fire. I wonder which one of us he would save first? On second thought….

Making life less scary…

for puppies

Times Square is a crazy place. People, cars, buildings, lights, horns – it can be overwhelming, even scary, if you’ve never seen that kind of chaos. For a young puppy, just going to the neighborhood park can feel like Times Square. The hustle and bustle of walking on a sidewalk, meeting strangers, seeing an umbrella pop open or a woman pushing a stroller can be overwhelming to a puppy who’s never experienced them before. These routine encounters are part of what’s called “socialization.” In dog training lingo, socialization is a fancy word for getting your puppy out and meeting new people, places and things. When you socialize your puppy, you’re taking him out to see and hear things like cars zooming by, garbage cans rolling, kids running or riding bikes or just experience walking on an unfamiliar sidewalk. It sounds routine to us, but we know these things are not scary or dangerous. Dogs don’t automatically know new things aren’t dangerous. We must teach them. The best way to teach them is to let them experience a variety of new things, especially when they’re puppies. While socialization is a lifelong effort, the ideal time to start is when they are about two months old. From the time they are eight weeks old until they are about four months old, you get the most socialization bang for the buck. At that age puppies are the most accepting of new people, places and things. A great place to begin is taking your puppy to classes, starting with a puppy kindergarten and continuing through an adolescent class and beyond.

Classes are important because they not only expose your puppy to age-appropriate training, they also teach you skills you’ll need as your puppy quickly matures from a pint-sized ball of fluff into a 50-pound adolescent, because no one wants 50-pounds of dog jumping up to say “hi.” A puppy class encourages safe interaction with people and other puppies of similar age. You’ll learn positive training methods like clicker training (it’s how trainers teach dolphins to jump on cue). And, best of all, the bond between you and your dog will grow through learning and working together in classes. After puppy kindergarten, most are ready to move on to an adolescent class, which is just as important. Adolescent classes teach you how to manage the most difficult period of your pup’s life – from about a year old up to three years. Most dogs are surrendered during this age because of behavior problems. Barking, jumping, poor manners, destructive behavior – these problems started during the puppy stage and escalated in adolescence. With classes, you can learn how to channel your dog’s energies into positive behaviors and how to prevent bad habits from developing. Once you finish an adolescent class, you’re on a roll. What’s next, obedience, agility, scent detection, dock diving? The sky’s the limit if you’re willing... and it all started out with some good puppy socialization, so life wouldn’t be a scary Times Square. Nassau Veterinary Clinic offers a full-line of dog behavior classes to fit your pet’s needs. Call today to enroll!
