The Our Towne Spotlight Shines on...Windy Hill Orchard
The wait is almost over. On September 7th, the doors of Windy Hill Orchard-East will open to the public. In May, Goolds Orchards was purchased by local brothers Scott & Todd Seeberger of Castleton. This 109-acre property along Brookview Station Road in Castleton will be the newest destination in the Capital District. Windy Hill Orchard-East will be a place where families can reconnect with each other, with nature and be welcomed by the owners who appreciate their support and business. The Seeberger family is extremely excited for you to visit their beautifully remodeled farm market and enjoy the Windy Hill Orchard-East experience; fun, exciting, positive and satisfying for all your senses.
Stroll through the farm store where you will find fresh baked cookies, apple turnovers, varieties of fudge, pies, fresh pressed apple cider and of course their famous apple cider donuts. They’ll also have many specialty items; homemade jams, relishes, pickles, apple sauces, specialty sodas, and aged cheddar cheese, to name a few. A large selection to peak everyone's interest along with many craft items. In September, you can pick Macs, Cortlands, Galas, Honey Crisp & Empires. You can pick or stop in and purchase what you need. The farm store will also have an education center and look forward to being host to field trips and your birthday parties!
The property, consisting of 13,000 trees and breathtaking views, will continue to be a working apple farm and host to many family friendly events throughout the year. The Seebergers have many exciting plans for the property that they’re sure will be embraced by local communities and tourists alike. They believe in providing customers with quality, wholesome, farm fresh products and a memorable experience. A family-oriented U-Pick apple orchard where you and your family can create memories year after year. Looking forward to 2020, you will be able to book space for private parties and even weddings! A cindery & winery is also in the works. Didn’t I mention there were many The first of many community events will be the 1st Annual exciting plans? Windy Hill 5K on September 21st. With grand kids home for the summer, it’s the perfect opportunity to combine active and family time! Here are some things you can do to keep yourself and your grandchildren moving all summer long: 1.Go on a scavenger hunt. Make a list of things to find, such as certain colors or animals, sounds, or shapes in nature. Bad weather? Take a trip to the mall and search for words or shapes on the store signs. 2.Go for a swim. It’s gentle on your joints, and great practice for young swimmers. Jump in the pool at your local YMCA to cool down, get moving, and have fun. 3.Play some outdoor games. Kids love teaching us what they’ve learned, so let them teach you how to play foursquare in the driveway! 4.Dance. Check out a Zumba Kids class at your local YMCA for a chance to learn new dances as a family! The summer months are precious, so take advantage of the time to get active and create new memories with your grandchildren. Our YMCA Before and After-School Programs will be back in full swing before you know it! For more information about our free August 21 Active Older Adults Day event, or our Before and After-School Childcare Programs, call the Greenbush YMCA at 518.477.2570.

It is always exciting for me to welcome new businesses to the magazine. In many ways, Our Towne is an extension of my family. When I have the opportunity to work with other small, family owned & operated businesses it allows me to be apart of their dream. The dream to be self employed and in charge of their own success and destiny. Owning a small business is not for everyone. Income, hours and stress levels vary from week to week. Challenges & competition change quickly; as fast as new online businesses pop up and corporate giants offer free shipping and local delivery. Success and failure to keep doors open does not reflect ones work ethic, product or service. Every year it is harder for small businesses to compete and survive, as our ability to order goods from all over the world with a click of a button in minutes. What sets small business apart from their global competitors is the relationship they have to offer. That fantastic feeling you get from shopping local versus a corporate giant or on the internet. I urge you to shoplocal and support the men and women who have invested their dreams in our community. The latest business to join Our Towne is Windy Hill Orchard. As you read on page 3, The Seeberger Family is beyond excited to welcome you to their orchard next month and can’t wait to be apart of your families traditions. They are the perfect example of a family business who have literally invested in our community and need us to survive. I know you will be impressed with the new farm market and all of the changes made to the property. I wish you a fantastic August and hope you take some time to unplug and relax with family and friends. Thank you for reading Our Towne Magazine. Be sure to LIKE Our Towne Magazine Rensco on Facebook to hear about news and promotions all month long.

Reflections & Revelations By Suzanne St. Germain
Dr. David Rabady Honored With Vitals 2019 Patients’ Choice Award. Ophthalmic Consultants of the Capital Region’s own Dr. David Rabady, M.D., has been named a winner of Vitals’ 11th annual Patients’ Choice Award and is recognized as one of New York’s favorite physicians. Vitals, a Lyndhurst, New Jerseybased healthcare database company, selects its award winners based on millions of patient reviews and ratings gathered over the course of the year. Through the Vitals platform, patients rate their doctors each year on a variety of topics including accuracy of diagnosis, bedside manner, and overall quality, and the award honors physicians who are most admired by their patients as evident by their near perfect patient ratings. Only the top 5 percent of physicians across the country are recognized with an award. Dr. David Rabady is a partner at Ophthalmic Consultants of the Capital Region and a retina specialist. He treats various retinal diseases such as macular degeneration, macular pucker, diabetic retinopathy, flashes and floaters, retinal detachments, as well as numerous other diseases and conditions of the posterior segment of the eye. One patient and recent Vitals reviewer shared, “Dr. Rabady saved my way of life and he is one of the finest, most caring specialists that I know. My family and I cannot thank him enough.” Another patient wrote, “David Rabady, M.D., we can never thank you or praise your professionalism enough. It is without question and incontestable that you have reached the elite status in your field. We are eternally grateful to have found you.”
Small Town Castleton
I grew up in a small town in the Adirondacks. I could tell you the name, but I doubt you’ve ever heard of it. The year I was born there were approximately 3,000 people spread across the 115 square miles of our little town. As with any small town “back in the day”, if you weren’t related to your neighbors or ¾ of your fifth-grade class, that was an anomaly. If you wanted to know what was going on with anyone, you caught up on the gossip at the tiny store, local gas station or church on Sunday. For a teenager, what the “old folks” thought was quaint, we thought was hell on earth. Whatever you did, got back to your parents. Walking in after school your mother was already on the phone learning of your transgressions on the bus or your poor attention span in English class. With age came the liberties of driving and part-time jobs in the “city” nearby. Trust me, there was no escape! When you got home from work, your father had already been told at the gas station about how you sped by! As a young and naive 18-year-old, I relocated to the “big city” of Schenectady. I was overflowing with confidence because my lifelong friend chose to make the journey with me. We were ill-prepared for “city life”. My life has taken many twists and turns, relocations and life changes since that time - leading me to Castleton. What, as a naive 18-year-old, I found appalling about small town life, I have grown to love. A teenager can’t stand the idea that their parents’ friends are everywhere. As a parent, I find comfort in knowing that even when my children came of age to begin exploring the world on their own, it was our own little world of Castleton - a place where “It takes a village” shows its true meaning. While our children roam the locale, there is rarely a time a mother’s cautious eye isn’t making sure they are safe or a father’s mechanical skills aren’t easily accessible to help change a flat tire.
Fluent in several languages including English, Spanish, and Jordanian, Dr. Rabady serves not only his patients with excellence but also the community at large, volunteering as chair and trainer for numerous academic society programs and participating in missions to remote areas with limited access to healthcare.
The heart of a small town is the biggest blessing at the most traumatic of times. As a transplant I can’t help but feel like I am on the outside looking in. My view has been amazing. During family emergencies, accidents such as house fires or other tragedies, there is never a short supply of assistance. I have joined in on many meal trains and watched our entire community help rebuild a farm.
About Ophthalmic Consultants of the Capital Region At Ophthalmic Consultants of the Capital Region, we offer a comprehensive model of eye care with experienced specialists, ophthalmologists and optometrists. We have 5 convenient locations in Albany, Clifton Park, Schenectady, Schodack, and Troy. Call today to schedule an appointment 518-777-2777. Visit www.myoccr.com.
The world seems to keep getting larger and less personalized. Population explosions are a constant and, if you watch the news, you can feel like no one seems to care about anyone but themselves. I am grateful that, even with all the ills of the world, the heart of the small town seems to still beat as strong and as constantly as ever.

Life Isn’t Perfect By Daryl Bart
Life isn’t perfect. I mean, I’m generally an optimist, one of those glass half full or even all the way full people. I really, really want everyday to be amazing. You know, one of those people that annoyingly wakes up, well rested, with a smile, and always answering “Awesome” when someone asks, “How are you today?” and I mean it.
These are the things I really love share. Being able to brag about my son’s college successes or my daughters sports is so much easier than talking about my parents state of health. I’m caught between planning an epic family vacation and caring for a sick parent, and I will likely share more about our August trip to Ireland than about my father’s physical rehab.
So here we are facing what I can only call “an incident”. Our dad is unwell. He’s not specifically sick or diagnosed with a disease. If that were the case, it might actually be easier to wrap my head around. He had a hospitalization, that led to a longer stay than expected, that led to nursing rehab center. I can usually spin my day it so that it really is amazing, if The seasons changed, we had birthdays, life has been going looked at the right way. never grows old.
You no longer have to worry about these inconveniences. Hearing aids are now available with rechargeable lithiumion batteries. Instead of changing batteries once a week, you just set the hearing aids into a charger every night, just like you would your cell phone. A fully drained hearing aid will complete its charge in just three hours, and a full charge can give a user over 24 hours of wear time!

As hearing aid technology is improving, so is the convenience of rechargeability. One of the most common annoyances with wearing hearing aids is having to change batteries. Disposable batteries typically have to be changed at least once a week, and as luck would have it, they always seem to go dead when you are in the middle of an important event with no spare batteries to be found.
Say you forget to charge the hearing aid one night; no problem, lithium-ion batteries have a quick-charge feature. With even just a half hour of charging the hearing aids, you will have about six hours of potential wear time. Today’s rechargeable battery technology provides you a convenient solution that eliminates the task of changing batteries and the need to carry around spares. – Dr. Alexandra Gartner, Au. D.

Often this is the “they don’t hurt” stage and we evaluate all the other issues. From my experience, most patients electwww.accuratetaxreturns.com to remove them, preventatively. While we do extract teeth all the time, most of the time we refer our patients to an oral surgeon for wisdom teeth procedures. Surgeons have additional training and most can sedate the patients, if requested, allowing for all 4 teeth to be done at the same time. When I was a Ourown Towne Magazine felts66@yahoo.com | www.ourtownerensco.com teenager, my dentist (my sister) sent me to| a518-380-1279 surgeon for this|exact reason.
In fact, 16-18 is the most common age for this procedure because we know the teeth are still small, the roots are not yet fully formed, the healing of the bone will be easier, and the removal tends to be simpler. In fact, my daughter, who is 16, is having her teeth out later this month. She had been complaining about one of the teeth, so after her exam and xray, we decided it was as good a time as any. My son had his done over winter break of his senior year in high school when he was 17. Adults have wisdom teeth removed, too. Many people go their whole lives never having any problems - but like any other tooth, they can age, crack, decay or abscess. My wife had her teeth out around age 28, when she decided to get braces. Summer and vacations are the most popular times for this procedure. If you’re considering the procedure, plan your consult for a convenient time to allow your daughter to recover without “impacting” her other activities (pardon the pun). Thanks again for asking, and remember, every case is different and must be discussed with your individual dentist/surgeon as to the risks or benefits. Good luck. Like other dangers, prevention is key and is often easier and cheaper than treatment. When using preventatives, keep in mind, not all of them are equal. Some are more effective, while others add more risk than relief. As with any pharmaceutical product, discuss with your veterinarian which products are best for you and your pets. Don’t let the summer heat and parasites get your pet down. Summer should be fun and we want you and your pets to enjoy it worry-free.

Does your child or teen have heel pain? It may be a condition known as Sever’s disease, also known as calcaneal apophysitis. This is a medical condition that causes heel pain in one or both feet. It typically affects children between eight and fourteen years of age, and recent research has shown that it occurs in males slightly more than females. you may notice your child limping especially after a running activity, and heel pain may be noticed after participation in sports. Children who are very active are affected more frequently, because of the stress and tension placed on their feet. Sever’s disease occurs at a part of the child’s heel known as the growth plate (calcaneal epiphysis). This is attached to the Achilles tendon on the back of the heel. This area can suffer injury when the muscles and tendons of the growing foot do not keep pace with bone growth. Therefore, the constant pain which one experiences at the back of the heel may make the child unable to put any weight on the heel. If your child is being affected by this condition, please come and see one of our doctors for additional information and proper treatment options!
