A message from

Our Towne September 2011

Dear Readers, I am excited to begin a new adventure as the publisher of Our Towne! My goal is to continue to provide people in Rensselaer County with everything hyper-local by letting them know what stores and services, events, people and places are available in their LOCAL community. September is Back to School month for most families. After a summer spent traveling, going to camp, and just lazing around enjoying the sunshine, it is time to return to the rigors of school, schedules & sports. Check out our Parent Pages for back-to-school deals and information. September is a great time of year for Gift & Antique Shopping, and Our Towne has a special section to help you discover that one-of-a-kind antique, piece of art or jewelry. In the new American economy, what we shop for is as important as where we shop. Read our article on this topic in the Gift & Antique Shopping Guide. As always, there is a lot to do: Stop by the Festa Italiana in Troy, or the big Country Kraft Fair at Hudson Valley, or one of the many events sponsored by local community organizations. Please enjoy this issue of Our Towne & tell our advertisers that you saw them in Our Towne. We welcome you’re your ideas, thoughts and suggestions so please send them along. As always, remember to visit us online at www.ourtownerensco.com for those of who do not receive Our Towne in the mail.

Thanks, Debbie

Debbie lives in Schodack Landing in an historic home with her husband, four children and their cat.

What’s Old is New Again Why Antiques are the eco-friendly choice in today’s economy By Darren Rosenbaum Whether it’s using a recycling bin for our plastic bottles or choosing paper over plastic at the grocery store, more and more Americans are embracing recycling. The ‘disposable’ habits we grew too comfortable with are no longer sustainable. One of the most overlooked aspects of our new ecofriendliness is how useful antiques and collectibles can be. Over the last few years, a new movement has gained momentum. ‘Antiques are Green’ is an organization founded in 2009 by Nigel Worboys, a British antiques dealer. Begun in reaction to a British government initiative that targeted public funds for green businesses, Worboys aim has been to get antiques recognized for their genuine green credentials as “sustainable, re-usable and re-saleable”. Put simply,

he sees “antiques are the ultimate form of recycling” because “antiques are a perfect way to take the green movement into our homes”. John Fiske, Editor-in-Chief of the New England Antiques Journal is a believer in the ‘Antiques are Green’ movement. “As a business, we are much better at selling antiques to existing collectors than we are at attracting new buyers to the business.” His aim is to have people “incorporate antiques into their existing lifestyle.” To get a sense of how you can reduce your carbon footprint, check out the antiquesaregreen.org online or shop at one of our local antiques and collectibles dealers listed above.

Miss Siggy’s ~ Advice for Kids Dear Miss Sigmund, I’m feeling lonely. Nobody wants to play with me at school. Some kids say I am mean. My mom says it would help if I learned to share more. My mom says sometimes I am bossy. It’s hard to share, but I want friends at school. Love, Lonely Girl

NOW ENROLLING

Dear Lonely Girl, I was very sad when I read your letter. I whimpered for you. It is not fun to feel lonely at school. It is hard to learn to share and to give others a chance to be in charge, but you need to practice these skills to have friends. Good friends share and take turns. You are a good girl and you can learn how to be a good friend. When I was a young puppy I would gnaw and rip my cousin Kale’s chew toys. I even ate his raw-hide bone without asking. He asked me to stop. I did not listen. He told on me too but I did not stop. Kale and his friends stopped playing with me. It took me a long time to understand that it was my behavior that caused me to lose him and his friends. Then I was lonely. When you are playing and do not want to share, or you want things to go your way ask yourself “What is more important, to have my way or to have friends? You will pick friends and then you will share and take turns. Practice and you will not be lonely anymore.

Five Tips to Prepare Children for a New School Year Contributed By Discovery Place Learning Center, East Greenbush ~ Terry Duncan, Master of Science in EducaƟon ~ Lynn LaVoie-Stephens, Master of Arts in Speech

1.Sleep Habits: Summer is a great me for staying up late and sleeping-in. By the end of summer, children are o en going to bed two or three hours later than they do throughout the school year. Spend a week or two before school starts ge ng back into regular sleep habits. Slowly move bed me back a li le each night un l your child is sleeping as he or she should during the school year. 2.Healthy Snacking: Once the school year starts and we’re busy running to sports prac ces and Scouts, it is o en easier to grab an unhealthy snack or dinner “on the go”. Be prepared for the school year by stocking up on healthy snacks that can be eaten on the run, such as bananas and snack crackers. Make a list of healthy snacks to pick up each week. Think about meals you can freeze and use as

12

September 2011

needed, such as lasagna. You and your child will feel be er if soccer prac ce ends with an apple and pretzels instead of drive-thru. 3.Establish a RouƟne: Help your child make a before and a er school checklist. Even younger children can use a checklist with drawings or photographs of what they need to do. A schedule will help your child learn me management and organiza onal skills, as well as increase his or her independence and feelings of self-confidence. 4.Check-In: This is a good me of year to check-in with your child as well as his or her teachers and friends. Listen to your child, especially if he or she seems nervous or anxious about the upcoming school year. Younger children who are entering school for the first me may enjoy the picture books Wemberly Worried by Kevin Henkes, Llama Llama Misses Mama by Anna Dewdney, and The Kissing Hand by Audrey Penn. Let your child’s teacher know ahead of me of any issues or concerns you or your child have rela ng to the previous school year. Schedule a few visits with classmates and friends that your child hasn’t seen for the summer. 5.Be PosiƟve: Spend some me with your child relaxing before school starts. Speak posi vely about your child’s new teacher(s) and all the fun things he or she will learn this year. Take a day off from school prep to do one last end of summer vaca on fun

Notes From the Skywright SEPTEMBER 2011 By Richard Morell Predictions for each sign follow. If you know your rising sign as well as your sun, please look at that prediction as well: ARIES (March 20 – April 21) Workplace and health issues will take the spotlight this month for you, and should actions not resonate for your spirit, you will most likely become aware of it through these issues. Find times to enjoy the people in your day-today experience and to wake up to the presence of the current moment. You feel more protective toward your family. If you’re doing things family members need to do for themselves, be prepared for blowback. TAURUS (April 22 – May 20) Jupiter visits your sign for the remainder of the year, and sends fortunate winds blowing your way. The energies of the New Moon also send blessing to your children and creations. This is a good month for fun and feed the inner child. Be on the lookout for militant siblings or angry neighbors. You might feel your community is under attack, but be sure to act responsively and effectively. A legal issue might trigger off old wounds. GEMINI (May 21 – June 20 Focus on heartfelt talks within the home, and arranging the dÊcor to suit the nesting instinct. Being able to communicate with relatives from the place of honesty and generosity will go a long way toward nourishing the theme of home. Unpredictable friendships, learning life lessons from children and creations, feeling that shared resources are causing ground-up transformation, and for September only, a sense that you must defend pocketbook issues and aesthetics to the death. CANCER (June 21 – July 22) Mars inhabits your sign this month, and passion will ensue. You’re prone to attract aggression, particularly where your self-presentation is concerned, and if much of your identity is wrapped up in family, it will also extend to defending family members. Keep in mind this can backfire if you attempt to do for them what they should be doing for themselves. Some battles others have to take up for themselves. This is a good month for journaling and for having over-the-fence conversations with neighbors. If you haven’t been doing that, now’s a good month to start! LEO (July 23 – August 22) This month you will feel that your values and your personal impression merge. You should see good cash flow, particularly in areas where you can take center stage. Neptune’s influence suggests that other people might not be entirely truthful with you, particularly where shared resources are concerned. Take the lead and remain clear in your interactions regarding money. You feel a bit defensive regarding things you choose to keep hidden from view. Be sure to inventory that stuff and discard that which has rotted away or creates a stink. VIRGO (August 23 – September 20) Happy Birthday, Virgo! For you, the New Moon is also a harbinger of your year, and it looks to be a communicative one, though in manner low-key and behind the scenes which is generally more to your liking. Be aware that you a tendency to glamorize partners is in the winds, whether in marriage or business. The larger struggles are felt in your creative energies as well as in those things you value and that loved ones value in common LIBRA (September 21 – October 20) Saturn has been traversing your sign since last fall, and it has been exacting

sometimes difficult lessons in your self-presentation. Partners will continue to be unpredictable, and family concerns will continue to be transformative. This is a month to guard against angry outbursts in public and where your career is concerned. This is also a good month to release old troubles that haunt you, perhaps with a good heart-to-heart with a trusted friend. SCORPIO (October 21 – November 21) Friendships that are particularly helpful to your career concerns can offer a lot of energy this month, particularly if they are people you have come to trust. Look to a well-placed friend to give direction to a long-range goal you might have. Be sure to ground yourself where your creativity is concerned, though it can offer a true amusement park of possibility. If you are struggling with how things are changing locally, look to see what you can add to the situation and take the lead. Siblings undergo difficult changes. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 – December 21) Career issues are highlighted this month, with some positive help coming from experts in the field and from those gifted with understanding global systems. Relatives might be a bit fuzzy this month. Your children and your creations get to learn and/or impart lessons that are necessary but painful. Be supportive, but don’t do their work for them. People will be particularly touchy around money this month. CAPRICORN (December 22 – January 19) Ah, Goat folk‌ I feel for you. Pluto is in your sign creating ground-up transformation and you will be in the fires for several years to come. Capricorn also represents Big Business, and what is playing out in Wall Street is also playing out micro-scale in your state of being. September’s energies also bring a special combativeness in your partnerships. If as I suspect, you are taking steps toward creating a life beyond your wildest dreams, be reassuring to your partners that you love them. Vet, vet, vet! AQUARIUS (January 20 – February 18) The spotlight shifts to your significant others and sharing vulnerabilities. Bedtime heartto-hearts around sexuality and shared finances may be indicated. Possible fogginess and vagueness about one’s own values and finances might arise this month, and this would be a good time to ponder spending plans and the like. Put a space between an item you’re thinking of buying and pulling out the plastic. Co-workers express hot tempers, and susceptibility to accidents spikes in September. Neighbors and siblings can also seem a bit volatile this month. PISCES (February 19 – March 20) One-to-one relationships are spotlighted this month, putting more of a focus on the Other than on oneself. That being said, it is equally important not to lose oneself in the Other, Pisces, particularly with a retrograde Neptune unspooling its gauzy influence on your self-image. Be sure to feel your feet. The planetary energies hit your pocketbook, shared pocketbooks, and you may be witnessing friendships undergoing the fires of transformation.

Bites Trilogy part 2 By Dr. David Stone, DVM

W

hy do we constantly make excuses for poor behavior? Weird human phenomenon. I do it too. Today someone called the office in a panic--her dog just bit her and she wondered if she’ll get lyme disease. No. But her dog bit her...bites her. This par cular person has told me a few of the reasons her dog bites her. The last me was “resource guarding” when she thoughtlessly tried to straighten a pillow on the couch (she knows the lingo). This latest wound was inflicted when she was talking on her cell...”it has a li le light that blinks-I try to cover it with my finger--I messed up”. What? I told her to worry less about lyme and call the trainer I recommended. Today I saw a 4 month old female “mas ff breed” puppy and the owners (great owners) were hyper aware of the poten al for disposi on problems--and how some of her current behaviors were undesirable. These folks did their homework before bringing her into their home, and are currently/ac vely in training classes to desensi ze and socialize this beau ful beast. I’m really excited for them. Dr. Jones asked me to sew up her face the other day. New client. Knew his dog bites-- previous vet confirmed the dog was always muzzled. He didn’t share that info with us. Pre y sure Jones has a lawsuit if she wants--she doesn’t. She’ll be fine--had a hotshot PA s tch her up. She’s a total pro-bit in the morning, s tched at lunch, worked all a ernoon. Hardcore vet. Breeds that bite...breeds don’t bite, dogs bite. Can’t argue with the fact that most bites, maiming, and deaths come from the jaws of pit bulls and the breed variants. Can’t argue that it’s usually an unneutered male and that the dog usually bites a child, a boy. Sta s cs can be viewed from any angle...take for instance the husky, great dogs, and yet 14

September 2011

the incidence of ge ng bit by any one husky is much higher than any one pit bull (husky = 81 per 1000, while pit bull = 41 per 1000). But then, I see many more pit bulls than huskies. The incidence of a doberman bi ng is rather low if you look at it on a dog per breed popula on basis (8 per 1000). Maybe some of this is about the owners. Tu s did a study proving that certain people are a racted to certain breeds... old ladies have poodles and thugs have pit bulls. Now there maybe some truth to that observa on--”bad boy” breeds certainly a ract bad boys who o en make loving but lousy owners. The problem is that I’ve been bi en by a lot of poodles--li le old ladies and all! Several pit bulls have tasted me and not all of their owners were thugs. Sweeping generaliza ons are not appropriate. But let’s be honest, I’m generally more alert with a pit than a poodle. I guess I profile too. There are lots of interes ng facts about dog bites. Someone gets bit badly enough to require medical a en on every 40 seconds in the US. 800,000 each year. Did you know that the CDC has a community ac va on program for the preven on of dog bites? And that the third week of May is dog bite preven on week? And that the dog least likely to bite may be the golden retriever (I’ve been bi en by several)? I could go on and on. Next month I’ll finish up the random notes on bi ng--hopefully I can come up with something inspira onal, or at least not boring.

Help us find our fur-ever homes...Please! Purrrfect Kitty of the Month Ozzie is a short-haired orange tiger kitty, about 8 years old. He’s a very friendly kitty. He loves to be petted - especially on his head. He enjoys sitting next to you and also likes to sit in a window and watch the world go by. Ozzie tends to want to be near you and can also follow you around the house. He would be a fun companion; a real “cool cat and would so appreciate getting a “forever home with a good person or family. Please consider bringing Ozzie home with you! As with all Purrfect Companion kitties, Ozzie is up-to-date on routine shots, house trained and neutered or spayed. For more information on Lea, please contact one of the following Purrfect Companions’ representatives: Jane, at 436-7450 or Maryann at 331-2221 or at kitties.purrfectcompanions@yahoo.com. Purrfect Companions is a non-profit, all volunteer rescue organization. We are always looking for good volunteers to help with the kitties or assist at our adoption clinics. If you’d like to donate a little time to these worthy animals, please give us a call at 463-8709. Our adoption clinics are held 12:30-4:00 most Saturdays and Sundays at Petco, Northway Mall, Albany NY. Stop by and see some of our other kitties! Ask The Attorney ~ Paul Czech My monthly "Ask The Attorney" column will no longer be appearing in "Our Towne". I want to say thank you to Ginny Siciliano, the immediate past owner of "Our Towne", for allowing me to write for you here as long as she did. My best wishes to Ginny who I know will be quite successful with all of the businesses she is operating and pursuing. I will, however, still continue writing the column. I will publish it myself on my website. If you want to keep reading "Ask The Attorney", just go to www.paulczechlaw.com and you'll find a new column there at the beginning or close to the beginning of every month. Nothing will change about the column except where you have to go to read it so I am still interested in hearing from you regarding legal issues, topics and questions that you'd like me to discuss and answer. If you'd like to contact me, just send me an email at law@paulczechlaw.com. Thanks for reading the column - I hope you continue to do so - and I look forward to hearing from you with any questions or comments you might have. Paul Czech 18

GEMINI (May 21 – June 20 Focus on heartfelt talks within the home, and arranging the décor to suit the nesting instinct.

CAPRICORN (December 22 – January 19) Ah, Goat folk… I feel for you.

In her first novel, My Grandmother’s Necklace, local author Patricia Carley takes the reader on a journey with her grandmother Mary from rural Hungary, across Europe to the docks of London where ships bound for America are wai ng. Interwoven with dreams and visions My Grandmother’s Necklace tells a tale of 3 Hungarian women who share a strong bloodline: Marie lives in modern day America and is traveling to eastern Europe to uncover her grandmother’s mysterious past. Mary lives in 1912 Hungary and is traveling west to her unknown future in America. In the year 1241 Mari struggles to escape bondage at the hands of the Mongolian army as they burn their way towards Budapest. The three women appear to one another in their dreams and each one wonders who the other two are and why they feel so drawn to each other. Join Marie, Mary and Mari as they travel through me and across space to find their own des nies and one another.

Heart to Heart: Our Journey as Mother and Son is Carley’s second book is about her experiences with her disabled son. John Carley was born in 1981 with Down Syndrome. A diagnosis of seizure disorder soon followed. While many people think of this as a disability, (and it is difficult to operate in society with a body and mind restricted by medical and physical complica ons), over the years, John has lighted the way for many through his perseverance, ar s c talents, and ability to see into our hearts. You will be inspired by this book of poetry, pain ngs, drawings and narra ves.

By Diane Organize your Mudroom in 5 Easy Steps Before we know it, Labor Day will be yesterday and school, a more regimented work schedule and the structure of Autumn will be upon us. Now is the perfect time to create or fine tune the mudroom, that space between the sanctuary of our homes and the big outside world. If outfitted correctly, the mudroom is the first line of defense against the dirt and chaos of the world outside our door. If you have an older home without a designated mudroom, consider carving out some space in your garage just outside the interior doorway.

1. Door mats on BOTH sides of the door. A heavy duty dirt catcher on the exterior side and a more decorative mat on the inside. 2. Hooks, hooks and more hooks. Install heavy duty hooks in two long horizontal rows approximately 36” and 60” from the floor. Stagger them. These are ideal for coats, backpacks, pet leashes. Consider installing a key rack and get in the habit of hanging car keys and avoid frantic morning searches. 3. A bench is a must! The serves as a place to put on shoes and also serves as a set spot. An ideal bench has storage underneath or room to store at least 3 good size baskets. 4. Baskets and a boot tray. Baskets are ideal for hat and glove storage, extra shoes and some sports equipment. A boot tray is ideal for containing mud and snow melt. 5. Look up! Consider installing some high shelves above your hooks. This space is ideal for storing seldom used items, a few extra baskets (for taller family members) and flashlights. To do its job effectively, a mudroom needs diligent maintenance and de-cluttering, only keep everyday, frequently used items, coats and shoes in the mudroom. When you can no longer see the floor or the wall where you installed the hooks…..it’s time to clear the clutter and get your mud room back to its peak operating condition.

FOOD! PIZZA PIE What to do with all the tomatoes, peppers and basil from your summer garden? Pizza is a healthy and delicious choice! Here is an easy pie recipe to inspire you. The best thing about making pizza ~ anyone, young or old can help the chef. Mangia!

NEW YORK STYLE PIZZA RECIPE from www.pizzamaker.com Dough Recipe 3½ cups (16 ounces) high-gluten flour 9 ounces warm water 1 tablespoon classico olive oil 1 teaspoon instant yeast ¾ teaspoon salt

In a stand mixer (e.g., KitchenAid) fitted with the paddle attachment, mix on low speed until ingredients come together and form a scrappy dough. Add olive oil and mix for a few seconds longer until it's incorporated into the dough. Switch to the dough hook attachment and set mixer to medium speed. Allow mixer to knead the dough for a full 15 minutes at which time it should pass a windowpane test. Place dough in a large oiled bowl and cover tightly with plastic wrap. Place dough in the refrigerator for 24 hours.

Pizza Sauce 28 oz. can whole peeled tomatoes (Redpack brand preferred) 1 clove garlic, minced 1 teaspoon dried oregano flakes

Puree the tomatoes, garlic, and oregano in a blender. Pour into a saucepan and simmer over low heat for 30 minutes (do not boil). When ready to make pizza, remove dough from refrigerator and allow to warm to room temperature. Preheat your oven (with pizza stone) to 550°F one hour prior to making pizza. Turn out the dough onto a floured work surface. Press the dough into a flat, round disc. Use your fingers or the palm of your hand to press the dough out thin, leaving an outside raised edge. Place the dough over your fists and begin stretching it into a large circle. Place the dough on a pizza peel which was been dusted with flour, cornmeal, or semolina flour. Add your sauce, toppings, and cheese (perform this step rather quickly so that the dough will not have time to stick to the peel). Transfer the pizza to the oven and bake until the crust is dark brown and somewhat charred. Remove from the oven and place on a cooling rack for 5 minutes. Transfer to a serving pan and slice. Check out more delicious recipes at this fun website.
