EDITOR’s NOTE
A New Start
Dear Readers, First, let me say I am thrilled to have the opportunity to Own & Publish Our Towne. It was an unexpected chance to begin a new professional journey for me. When Debbie Gaylord and I were talking about her move to Florida and her immediate need to sell Our Towne, we were brainstorming about the type of person she needed to find- quickly! Then she and her husband looked at me and said, “Jen, you should buy it! You would be perfect!” Well, over the next week my husband, Chris, and I were mulling it over. The answer was obvious. This was a great opportunity that should not be passed on, out of fear of the unknown. Sometimes in life, opportunities hit us in the face. If we don’t keep our eyes open as we go through this journey of life, we will miss it! And sometimes we have to create our own opportunities. Either way, if we are going to grow as individuals, we must take a leap of faith. A leap of faith in ourselves. The unknown is scary. There may be risks & failures. There may be growth & success. And the only way we will know is to take the risk. This is what we teach our children- and I now have the opportunity to be a role model for them. You can only succeed in life if you try. It is easy to do what is safe. It is easy to maintain the course and do what you are confident with. It takes a strong person with guts to try something new. For the cover of my first Our Town issue, I chose to highlight another person in our community who took a leap of faith and has created a new start. Chrystie Kenny Greco, Owner and Artistic Director of CK Dance Company in Castleton opened her own dance studio after many years as a successful professional dancer . Her 12 years as a Rockette fulfilled her dream as a performer. As you will read in our interveiw, since the age of 12 ,she had the dream of opening her own studio and becomming a dance teacher. After settling in Castleton with her husband and family, she decided it was her time to follow the dream of opening her own studio. As any business owner knows, there is risk involved. However, she knew that the risks and challenges would be worth the success that she visions. I have no doubt she will be successful and that Our Towne readers will embrace her in the business community. This issue is dedicated to all of you who have taken that leap of faith and started a new beginning. All of our contributors and advertisers have taken a leap of faith in OUR COMMUNITY. As owner & publisher of Our Towne, I hope this publication will help them achieve greater levels of success. It is my goal to be a positive vehicle in our community and promote small business and all of the wonderful services that are available to us locally. Through this publication, I want all of you to reach success. Be inspired. Take risks. Believe in yourself and believe in OUR TOWNE! Jennifer Felts

towne welcomes ck dance company
Chrystie is the 4th Rockette from the left
It all began at the age of five in Marge Tynan’s School of Performing Arts in Albany. This is where the love of dance began for Chrystie Kenny. Since the age of 12, Chrystie Kenny Greco, Owner & Artistic Director of CK Dance Company, in Castleton, had the desire to open her own studio and become the inspiration and driving force for other dancers. Throughout her years at Albany High School, Chrystie would leave school every day and develop her Tap & Jazz technique and routines for the Competitive team until 9:00 each night. By age 15, she was teaching her own classes at the studio. “Dancing was my sport. It was my hobby and my life,” says Chrystie. She notes that by the age of 12, she knew that teaching and owning her own studio someday was in her future. Attending Marymount Manhattan College, where she earned a Bachelor’s in Fine Arts, allowed her to expand her technical skills in an area that was new to her. To this point, Chrystie was a Tap & Jazz Dancer. At Marymount, she was required to study and perform Ballet & Modern Dance. This was new challenge for her that she embraced. In retrospect, she realizes that this formal education enabled her to achieve success as a future Radio City Rockette. She ended up loving Ballet, and realized that it greatly improved her all around technical skills as a dancer. College prepared Chrystie for a career as a performer, and yet, she ironically wrote her Senior Seminar Paper on “How to Open a Dance School.” After completing her BFA in Dance at Marymount Manhattan College, she auditioned a few times for the Rockettes. The third time was a charm, because she was asked to sign on for the Touring Company where she spent 8 years as a Rockette in various cities around the country. At one point, she was living the dream and dancing 4-5 shows a day. It was in 2006, that she made the move to New York City and danced on The Great Stage at Radio City Music Hall for 4 years. She was in the 75th Celebration Spectacular, performed on The Ellen Degeneres Show, The Today Show, Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade and Dancing with the Stars. She even found herself on the side of the NYC Greyline Buses and on a billboard in Times Square. After 12 years of working with some of the world’s most renowned directors and choreographers, she started thinking about the next phase of her career. Finding great success as a Professional Dancer was just one of her professional goals. She always knew that owning her own studio and becoming a teacher was in her future. After getting married and settling down in Castleton, she decided it was time to follow that dream. In January 2012, Chrystie Kenny Greco opened CK Dance Company. Her school offers young children a nurturing environment to develop a passion for dance, while encouraging aspiring dancers the opportunity to develop their technical skills and individual expression. Chrystie notes that dance teaches students valuable life lessons including discipline, team-work, responsibility, work-ethic, respect and commitment, making them well rounded individuals with a strong sense of self. CK Dance Company offers students the opportunity to develop these skills in a healthy, encouraging environment where competition is not the focus. CK Dance Company offers Preschool Program, with classes in Creative Movement and Pre-Dance, that focuses on skills such as listening, following directions & self- control. The Combination classes for 5-8 year olds are designed to introduce basic dance steps associated with Ballet, Tap, Jazz, to offer a well- rounded foundation. For students 8-18, beginner level thru pre-professional, the Dance Curriculum provides study in Ballet, Tap Jazz and Hip Hop performance opportunities within local communities. All students participate in the CK Dance Company’s year-end Showcase, which is scheduled to be held at The Empire State Egg on May 31, 2013. In addition, CK Dance Company offers adult classes in Tap, Jazz, Hip Hop, Pilates and Barre’ Fitness. The goal of CK Dance Company is to provide the highest quality dance education in a warm and nurturing environment. Chrystie, and the instructors at CK Dance, believe that a strong dance education can allow children & adults to explore their individual talents while fostering physical, mental and spiritual development. Chrystie has developed a passion for encouraging and inspiring the growth that children in dance experience today. It is her objective to challenge these young dancers, push the boundaries of personal achievement in a positive way, and to encourage their personal growth and self-esteem. It is a pleasure to welcome CK Dance Company and Chrystie Kenny Greco to the Our Towne family. We are thrilled that she chose Our Towne to pursue her next chapter! Fall Foliage Views by Train, Gondola and Skywalk! By Nancy M. Shanley, AAA Hudson Valley
As summer winds down, thoughts turn to the savory scents of apple cider and pumpkin pie, and of course the vibrant reds, yellows, golds and oranges of fall foliage. In the Northeast, foliage first turns in the upper elevations in mid to late September. Here are some favorite places to experience gorgeous autumn scenery.
Lake Placid, NY Foliage Peak: Mid-September to Mid-October Host to the 1980 and 1932 Olympics, Lake Placid is a colorful place to begin the leaf peeping season. Scenic routes to explore include SR 73 and SR 74. Enjoy shopping in the Olympic Village, then, all aboard the Adirondack Railroad Fall Foliage Train. Relax and enjoy breathtaking views of the Adirondacks. The Fall Foliage train is scheduled to run Wednesdays through Sundays from September 8 through October 14. For prices and departure times visit www.adirondackrr.com.
Mount Jewett, PA Foliage Peak: Late September to early October About 200 miles west of Scranton, PA, along Route 6 is Kinzua Bridge State Park in Mount Jewett. Inside the park you’ll find the Kinzua Bridge Skywalk. The Skywalk was built along the Kinzua Viaduct, once an old railway structure. Although partially destroyed by a tornado in 2003, the bridge was redesigned as a pedestrian walkway that opened in 2011. Visitors can marvel at miles of forest seen from over 600 feet of walkway. At the end of the bridge, leaf peepers can look down through a partial glass platform for a different view of autumn scenery bursting with color. Learn more at www.dcnr.state.pa.us/stateparks/findapark/kinzuabridge.
Stowe, VT Foliage Peak: Late September to mid-October SR 100, known as the Skier’s Highway, meanders through picturesque Vermont towns including Killington, Sugarbush and Stowe. Don’t miss the Stowe Gondola SkyRide for breathtaking foliage views near the peak of Vermont’s highest mountain. At the top, you can access hiking trails near the mountain peak, or enjoy a leisurely lunch at the Cliff House Restaurant. Log on to www.gostowe.com/gondola for more details. Of course it’s hard to predict what Mother Nature will do, and when. Look for updated foliage reports online in early September. The foliage hotlines listed below are usually up and running around the same time as well.

Fall is considered to be the best time to plant. The weather is cooler and the moisture levels are more consistent which creates a good environment for perennials, shrubs and trees. This is much better than spring planting when droughts and high summer temperatures subject the new plants to undue stress the first year while they are still putting down roots. To take maximum advantage of the season look for hardy perennials, shrubs and trees to be on sale at your local nursery, but do not expect them to be in full bloom. This is a time when you will want to research the plants, or perhaps take a book with you to see what the plant will be like in full bloom. Plant your new purchases as soon as possible, but avoid those really hot fall days. Plants will adjust much better on cooler days with clouds. Trim any tall upper stems and damaged leaves before planting as they will likely drop off anyway when the really cold weather arrives. As with planting in the spring, you will need to make sure that you water the plant in. This is not so much to give the plant water, as to settle the soil around the root system so that they can absorb both water and nutrients. After planting, make sure that you mulch the plants. The roots system will take time to start growing into the surrounding area and will benefit from the soil being insulated. One thing to remember with trees particularly is that they need water during colder months too and unless this arrives in the form of rain, you may need to supplement with a hose. This may seem strange when there is snow on the ground, but snow does not seep into the ground, it sits on top until a thaw melts it and is thus useless to the tree roots. A little extra water can make all the difference to a tree’s survival. Please visit us, at Becker’s Farm Garden CenterHometown Garden Center”

You don’t have to be Italian to enjoy a fun-filled weekend of culture, live music, incredible food, children’s activities and more. This year’s Festa will be held Friday and Saturday from 5:00 pm to 11:00 pm, Sunday noon to 6:00 pm, and Sunday morning an outdoor mass will be held under the tent. The heart of the Festa is food! Enjoy everything from pasta fagioli, calamari and eggplant parmigiana to Italian cookies and lemon ices. Again this year there will be an Indoor Family Pavilion featuring activities for all ages, such as a Magician Show, Face Painting, Clown, Stuffed Animals and a Book Booth. For the first time this year the Italian Community Center will be celebrating Italian Culture by hosting Fresco Exhibits of 30 local artists. The Bella Vita Project is an inspiration of Little Italy’s own restoration artist Andrew Daley. As a start, the community now has 30 original frescoes hanging in Troy’s Little Italy. Enjoy the artwork and help us keep the art of fresco painting alive, so it does not become a lost art. On September 16th the winner of the Fresco Competition will be announced. Immediately following and continuing throughout the day, many will be available through public auction. There will be a variety of live music featuring the Good Times Band on Friday from 6:00 pm to 10:00 pm, the CAPRI on Saturday from 6:00 pm to 10:00 pm and Al Bruno on Sunday from 1:30 pm to 5:00 pm. A Method to the Madness...by Daryl Bart
I can vividly recall a time back in high school, probably the only time, I was grounded. It was a Sunday and my mother was laying down the law for an infraction which I will not publish so I cannot be accused of giving someone a bad (or good) idea. I was a senior in high school. My punishment was to stay in my room all day (bummer…NOT!), clean it, oh well, and I was grounded until Friday? What? Did I hear that right – I was punished only on the school nights? I thought my mom was an idiot (teenager) grounding me from Sunday to Friday. Well – I took it and endured it with multiple sighs, eye rolls, dirty looks and attitude galore. In hindsight, and as I embark on laying down law with my own son, I realize, my mom might have actually had a plan. With her terms, I was home every night, my room was clean, my homework was done, we actually ate a few meals together, yet she was still free to do whatever she had planned for the weekend. I was released from servitude, knowing that I could be grounded at any moment. An executable, manageable punishment that didn’t really affect her too much, but she could stick to it and see it through, and it instilled a little fear – Isn’t that the point? Now it’s my turn and you know what they say about payback. So, when our 11 year old son got caught….We decided to take his IPOD away for the entire summer. It was our feeling that this was the punishment that would make the biggest impact on our 6th grader. Our son is a generally great kid. He is smart, sweet, and a great athlete. He is helpful, if not a little absent minded, and has only once before had to have a significant consequence handed down. (The “multi-vitamin incident” is a long story and old news). He bought the iPod with his birthday money and since we feel he is not ready for the responsibility of a cell phone (considering he can barely hold down a conversation) we agreed to let him have a free texting app that could only be used at home. We smelled something fishy – and asked him a few questions. Things weren’t adding up. Our investigation uncovered a few, let’s say, “untruths” (putting it nicely), and found that our son was staying awake to all hours of the night, texting and playing games. I have to thank the time stamp technology for that one.I know, big deal right – but he is 11 and we have told him his only job is to be a good student and give 100 %in school and sports - and that wasn’t happening. Now we understood why he’s been so tired and it wasn’t due to a busy schedule but a budding social life. We needed to act and fast. It was a hard conversation, and heart breaking and as a parent in unchartered territory. Our coordinated effort was the key. Bad cop and Worse cop. Our son did not like it one bit; He didn’t like disappointing us; He mostly didn’t like getting caught but took it well as he handed over the iPod and gave us a hug and an apology. We were swift and decisive. And I needed a drink. All we can hope is that his punishment is seemingly painful yet in reality not too hard, kind of like being grounded during the week. Maybe he’ll get more sleep and more sun. And on the flip side, I hope enforcing it is not too hard for us. Hopefully he’ll learn from it and remember that we mean what we say. Will our plan actually work? We’ll have to wait and see. Labor Day is approaching and so is the end of his 3 months off the grid. For now this Bad cop has been enjoying Pandora radio. Hey…method to the madness. My mom was on to something.

Sunday, September 16, 2012 (N/A) Uncle Sam Parade. 1:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. Parade Location: Parade starts 125th St. ends 106th Street, Troy. Description: Beginning in 1976, the Uncle Sam Parade and Celebration has grown tremendously having thousands attend every year. The parade is one of several events marking Samual Wilson’s birthday, which was Sept 13, 1766. Wilson was the Troy meatpacker and Massachusetts native who many believe was the inspiration for the Uncle Sam figure. Supporters of the Wilson story say he became associated with Uncle Sam when he stamped the initials “U.S.”on barrels of meat he supplied to American forces in the war of 1812. Seeing the initials, soldiers began referring to wilson as Uncle Sam. Samual Wilson died in 1854 and is buried in Troy’s Oakwood Cemetary. The annual Uncle Sam Parade and Celebration, however, is more than just your everyday parade. It’s a celebration of patriotism and citizen recognition. The two day event includes an annual graveside ceremony at the grave of Samual Wilson, the annual ‘Uncle Sam Citizen of the Year Banquet’, and immediately following the parade a celebration at the Knickerbacker Park. Park festivities include food, entertainment and the culmination of a spectacular fire works show at dusk. Contact: For additional inforamtion, please call 518-2350615.

Quips/Quotes/Myths/etc. By Dr. David Stone, DVM
These are some tidbits I’ve heard over the years... I’ll share. I like pigs. Dogs look up to us. Cats look down on us. Pigs treat us as equals. (Winston Churchill). I always hold on to the mantra: 80% of animals will live DESPITE what you do to them, 10% will die IN SPITE of what you do to them and it’s the 10% in between that you can truly make a difference for. I saw a black lab mix puppy today for her annual checkup. The two little girls in the family are twins—about 5 years old. I started to examine the puppy and one little girl said, “she’s got 8 boobs.” A very sad young couple with two small children came in to put their beloved mastiff down, who was demonstrating potentially dangerous aggression to the kids. After the deed was done, mom light-heartedly said, “now maybe we can trim her nails,” to which the young son replied, “why would we do that? She’s dead.” A young couple who would blow raspberries on their ferret’s “belly button”—not happy when they found out it was his prepuce. I had a client whose dog had a severe flea bite allergy and loads of fleas inform me that her dog couldn’t possibly have fleas because she lives in a gated community. Dogs named Lucky, aren’t. Clients lie, though often unintentionally. Clients who say “money is no object” are not planning to pay their bill. You can never judge a client’s financial situation by the way they look.
A dry/wet/cold/warm nose is a sign of a sick dog. A distemper vaccine prevents a bad temper. Ringworm is a worm. People can’t get parasites. Letting your female dog have a litter will make her a better dog. Spaying your female dog will make her fat. Rubbing your dog’s face in his feces will house train him. Indoor cats don’t Need Rabies vaccines. My dog doesn’t hurt, he’s just limping. A cat with an “M” on its head is a Maine Coon. Corn and all by-products are bad.
More people get bitten by small dogs…then big dogs.
Neutering a dog will calm him down and make him nice.
Nothing you do in medicine is without consequences.
If you don’t see fleas, your animal can’t possibly have them.
When an employee says that they are broke, it doesn’t mean that they want to work extra hours.
Your breeder knows best when it comes to medical advice.
Using more force will only make things worse.
If you breed your nice, cute mutt, all the puppies will be clones of your dog and everyone will want one and you will make a lot of money off the puppies.
There is no such thing as “routine” surgery. The appointment schedule is no indication as to how busy you will be today. The more you go out of your way to help someone, the less they appreciate it. I’ve still not seen everything and never will. .If someone says that vein is so big, you cannot miss it, you will miss it.
The best way to remove a tick is to apply gasoline to make it back out. If that doesn’t work, try using a lit match…Ka-Boom!—actually happened. Modern veterinary techniques and drugs, nutrition knowledge and methods of behaviorial training are unnecessary because they do not exist “in the wild” and the husbandry of the modern pug/Chihuahua/great dane should be as closely based on “the wild” as possible because they are all but very slight variation of the wolf. Vets get kickbacks from the pet food companies for recommending their foods.
I had a client bring in a sample of diarrhea in a little cellophane wrapper his cigarette pack came in. That way it fit nicely into the breast pocket on his shirt. The pocket also kept the cellophane wrapper upright, which was an advantage as it was open on the top.
He’s aggressive because he was abused before we got him (at 6wks of age).
My favorite fecal samples are brought in “I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter” containers.
Calico cats are grouchy because they’re half male.

Purrfect Kitty of the month
Meet.....Isaac Isaac is a shorthaired, sleek, black kitty, now 7 years old. He started life as a scared, homeless kitten and was wary of people. He has been at our shelter for at least 5 years! We thought he had a home after we featured him in July, but sadly, that fell through, so we wanted to give him another chance. People pass him by because he is shy and not as outgoing as some of our other cats, but we know that when a person takes time to gain his trust (as we volunteers have done), he is incredibly affectionate and loves to be petted. Isaac is great company for other cats as he is submissive and gets along well with them. Isaac needs a quiet home with people who are patient enough to get to know him. Please consider giving Isaac the forever home he deserves and has waited so long for! As with all Purrfect Companion kitties, Isaac is up-to-date on routine shots, house trained and neutered or spayed. For more information on Isaac, please contact the following Purrfect Companions’ representative: Maryann at 331-2221 or at kitties. purrfectcompanions@yahoo.com. Purrfect Companions is a non-profit, all volunteer rescue organization. We are always looking for good volunteers to help with the kitties or assist at our adoption clinics. If you’d like to donate a little time to these worthy animals, please give us a call at 463-8709. Our adoption clinics are held 12:30-4:00 most Saturdays and Sundays at Petco, Northway Mall, Albany NY. Stop by and see some of our other kitties! We may have one that is just “PURRFECT” for you!

September 2012
Creating family time during the busy school year It’s that time of year again…time to unpack the beach bags and load up the back packs. Sometimes as parents, it’s difficult to get excited about the start of the school year. It’s not that we have anything against school but the start of school often means another frantic fall is beginning. Soon we’ll be racing back and forth to Scouts, dance class, and hockey practice, scheduling meetings with teachers, and struggling to get our children to finish homework. It’s no secret that children these days are more stressed than ever before. Scheduling homework, activities, and meals creates stress for children and parents alike. Those families who spent the summer relaxing and playing together may be asking: how can we possibly squeeze the same family time into our busy school-year schedule? 1. Create a family schedule. You can buy a pre-made schedule, generate one on the computer, or draw your own on poster board. Whichever way you choose, a master family schedule is essential. At the beginning of the week, take a few minutes to sit down with your family to review the upcoming activities for the week. Make sure everyone knows the plan so you’re all working together, using your time efficiently, and decreasing your stress. 2. Plan time together. While you organize your master schedule, make sure you include time together. Many families have a Friday family game night. Others share Sunday morning brunch. If you truly can’t plan something weekly, try to plan an outing once a month. You could go apple picking, visit a museum, or go to dinner and a movie. 3. Limit your child’s activities. You probably think it would be impossible for your child to choose between hockey and karate but the fact is kids are just as stressed as we are. Make sure your child is participating in activities because he or she wants to and not because of outside pressure. Have an honest conversation with each child about the time and money it takes to participate in three or four extra-curricular activities each week. Make sure your child knows you will still love him or her if he or she doesn’t become an all-star or concert pianist and that fewer activities means more time together. If you take the time to ask your child, the answer may surprise you! 4. Share meals. Eating meals together is a great way for a busy family to multi-task. You have to eat, right? Set some ground rules for family dinners. Outlaw phone usage, including: texts, calls, emails, video games, or social media. Try to talk about positive events and save discipline for another time. If you can only share a meal once a week or a few times a month, make it something special. Let each family member request or help prepare a favorite food or dessert, dress up, light candles, and set the table for formal dining. 5. Fifteen minutes means a lot to a child. Don’t assume, just because you only have a few minutes a day, that it’s not enough. The key is to make every minute count. Turn off the TV and your phone. Bake a batch of cookies for school lunches or take a quick walk around the block. Read a book, cuddle and talk about your day, share a funny story from your childhood that relates to your child’s daily joys and struggles. Start a bedtime ritual. Many children are more relaxed and more likely to discuss the day’s events before bed. Remember, if you feel overwhelmed your child probably does too. Take a break, relax, and breathe and make sure your kids do too! You’ll be teaching them an important lesson they can teach their children someday…maybe over Sunday brunch.

Dear Amy:
You are not alone. The phrase Root Canal has been sending shivers through generations but really isn’t as scary as in the past. Root canals are usually recommended in one several situations. •
A very deep cavity that is approaching the nerve
•
A broken or fractured tooth
•
An abscess or infection
When symptoms or examination indicate that the living area inside the tooth is infected, irritated or has one of the conditions listed above, a root canal may be the recommended treatment to save the tooth. Root canals can be done by your general dentist or a specialist known as an endodontist. The diseased canals inside of the tooth (pulp or nerve), are cleaned out. The canals are located in the roots of the tooth, hence the name “root canal”. The tooth is sealed from the bottom up. A final restoration (filling or crown) is completed within a few weeks. Teeth have from 1 to 4 canals and the procedure can be very simple and be done in a single visit, or be more complicated due to multiple canals, crooked roots, calcifications and previous dental work. Some folks need a simple filling & others may need a crown on the tooth. Most teeth having root canals will need a crown. Most procedures are routine, as in your case. Pain and discomfort often come from the infection, not the procedure. Local anesthetic is used to thoroughly numb the area. Pros and cons may be discussed prior to or during the procedure. However, the benefits of attempting to save a tooth that could last a lifetime, often outweighs the risks of losing the tooth, as doing the root canal may allow you to keep a tooth that would otherwise need to be extracted.

As always, please discuss your concerns with your dentist or hygienist. Regular checkups are necessary. Your restored tooth, even without a nerve, can still develop cavities or gum disease. Refer to ADA.org for many dental topics. Email me @ DrJoe@ LapinskiDental.com
