The Our Towne Spotlight Shines On... H.L. Fuel & Propane
They service and do heating system installations for all their accounts, in house, and do not contract the work out to others. The customer always has consistent and managed care of their system from start to finish, 24 Hours a day, 7 days a week.
When shopping around for home heating fuel & propane, you will certainly find that HL Fuel & Propane will not only BEAT any competitors price, he will also provide the full service that you would expect from a business that is celebrating 30 years in business. From the sale of your fuel or propane, to the service that may be needed on your furnace, HL Fuel employs the professionals to take care of your needs from start to finish. Harry Hicks, the proud owner of HL Fuel & Propane is honestly one of the most down to earth, focused, smart and kind business owners I have met. He personally manages the finest details of his rapidly growing business. Born, raised and schooled in New Lebanon, Harry learned early on the importance of solid relationships with customers, built on trust, and consistently offering excellent products and service. Without the customer, we would not be here. "Those relationships build the business, and always improving the products and service is what keeps them." His grandfather, Harry B. Hicks, started Hicks Lumber Co Inc. (hence, the letters “HL” before Fuel and Propane) at that Route 20 location in 1929, and Harry caught the solid work ethic and entrepreneurial spirit from his father and grandfather at a very young age. Harry spent some time in the 70’s and early 80’s in the communications industry owning and operating H L Communications selling and installing satellite systems, but the challenges of the ever-changing heating business continued to intrigue him. In 1985, he officially started HL Fuel, turning what was his own home there on the site into the offices and building another house for himself nearby. In spite of the difficulties of the business, Harry says he has never regretted that move. What is most challenging? Harry notes that “it used to be easier to predict the ups of winter and downs of summer” When I started this business in the 80s, it was less volatile. You never could completely control Mother Nature, of course, but now it is even more imperative to have much better buying plans just to keep costs marginally under control. With thousands of long term customers, you can be guaranteed satisfaction. When you visit their office at 1232 Route 20 in West Lebanon, you get a sense of the scope of their professional and progressive operation The phones ring constantly and people drop in and out, but everyone remains calm and friendly in the midst of all the activity. They serve Columbia County and southern Rensselaer County, but they have many customers in Berkshire County, Massachusetts and Bennington County, Vermont as well. Over the years, Harry has developed buying strategies and operations techniques that enable him to offer fuel and propane at very competitive prices. They do not go through any unnecessary middle men or extra steps to provide their customers with product, so this streamlining saves money for the customer.
Aside from their excellent prices and efficient operation, there are many long-term employees who make dealing with HL Fuel and HL Propane a pleasure. Harry has employed about 15 to 20 local people full time and seasonally, but relies on his experienced core staff to assist him year round in providing great customer service and follow-through. Harry is a very hands-on guy and very accessible. It takes a great team of people to deliver such great service. Far too many to name individually, but a few include Sandy Mitchell and Dale Hoctor Customer Service representatives, Service Manager Wayne Martin, and Operations Manager-Book Keeper/ Leeann Krutziger. Last, but of course not least, is Harry's wife, Beth, who serves as Vice President and has her hands in all of the areas of operations, as Harry does. She also keeps watch over their three adorable shih-tzus – Charlotte, Tiffany, and the younger Lilly (who is always in the office greeting anyone who walks in the door). Now is really the time to review your heating system, get whatever service or maintenance you need done, and get yourself ready for the colder months ahead. HL Propane and HL Fuel offer many prepaid, budget and capped price plans and can help you determine what the best course of action is for your particular circumstances. As a convenience to their customers, they have a toll free number and a website through which you can keep track of your account, order fuel or propane, pay your bill or buy a contract. You are welcome to manage your account online or call the office. They can also set up automatic delivery for you if desired so you will never be left in the cold. The cold days of winter are RIGHT around the corner. And if the Farmer's Almanac is correct, this is going to be another brutal winter! Call now to lock in your price for the season! Harry advises not to wait until you are absolutely frozen to check out your system and prepare. They have 24hour emergency call service, but those kinds of calls are never ideal for anybody and are easily avoided! It’s always best to know what your options are. Nobody likes to think of heating costs of any kind, but if you are heating badly or inefficiently, you are not saving, but wasting money. Efficiency is one area proven to be better not only for warmth but for the cost of that warmth! You don't want to be "left out in the cold!" Give them a call if you have questions or concerns about any heating issues, or want to know about Energy Loan financing available to people improving the energy efficiency of their homes or businesses. They are happy to educate you on any of your concerns or questions. The main number of HL Fuel and HL Propane is (518)7949066. Their easy access website is www.hlfuel.com, and the toll-free number is 877-794-9066. There is always a real person at the office on Route 20 to assist you as well (and they are open Monday through Friday from 8am to 4pm.

KIDS & Family PLANNING GUIDE
Back To School Beyond the Regular School Day By Shannon Romanowski Executive Director, Greenbush YMCA
Each year thousands of parents across the U.S. are faced with the challenge of finding care for their school aged children outside of the regular school day. As we creep closer to the end of summer parents begin the process of finding suitable care for their children before and after school. For many, this decision can be a stressful one. The Capital District YMCA, Greenbush Area Branch offers both before and after school care to students in the East Greenbush School District. Our doors open at 7:00am for before care, welcoming students with learning centers, a healthy cold breakfast and opportunities for homework help and physical play to start your child’s day. Our before care program even covers you on those pesky 2 hour delay days. Our doors will still open at 7:00am on delay days and students will be picked up by East Greenbush School District Buses and brought to their school. Our Afterschool program is open until 6:00pm and includes learning centers, homework help, healthy daily snacks and opportunities for physical play, enrichment clubs and swimming. Children who attend our after school program are also covered on half days and emergency release days. Our programs are licensed by NYS Office for Children and Family Services and accredited through NYS After School Works. For more information contact Alysha Branch, Childcare Director at 477-2570 x 1220 or abranch@cdymca. org. You can register online at www.cdymca.org

Lorraine from rensseLaer asks: “How mucH acupuncture do you need to notice a cHange?” My goal is to change your symptoms during the first treatment. If you have shoulder or back pain, for example, this means that the pain dulls or the range of motion increases just after needles are placed. When this quick change occurs, it indicates that a series of treatments can most likely help resolve the issue. The more recent your condition is, the quicker it may respond. For chronic structural issues, such as a degenerated hip joint or advanced arthritis, acupuncture cannot replace lost bone, but it might help to reduce the inflammation and discomfort and help you manage the condition with less medication. Other chronic conditions, such as Parkinson’s, can also be managed to make the patient more comfortable with various symptoms as they flare up. While I cannot predict the outcome from any treatment, many patients tell me that I have helped them resolve conditions such as chronic migraines, longstanding ankle pain, insomnia, or back pain, sometimes in only a few treatments. Many of these patients leave testimonials on my website, so you can see the wide range of conditions acupuncture can help. Visit www.stuckupstate.com to learn more.

September 2015 Dear Our Towne Readers, With summer coming to an end we are all looking forward to a new chapter that each school year brings. Our August didn’t exactly turn out as planned. Getting a call from your child’s camp telling you that they are taking her for X-Rays, just to be on the safe side, is never a call you want to get. That is, until you get the call to come pick her up because she broke her ankle. Yup... that is the one you really don’t want to get. The week following consisted of lots of tears. Not so much from the physical pain, but from the disappointment of having to leave her most favorite place on earth a week early. As parents, we never want our kids to feel disappointment or failure. It broke our hearts; as she looks forward to this experience every summer and counts down the days until she can return again. It only got worse when she realized there would be no running with her beloved Cross Country team, no work (that she also loves, but requires all walking) and of course no beach family vacation. One certainly doesn’t appreciate mobility until you lose it! She wasn’t being reckless or risky. It just happened. Life happens. Accidents happen. What can you do? Nothing, but accept it and find the silver lining. She get’s to spend more time on her computer, read and “relax.” The bright side for me was that I had her company, while working in my home office. It has been great to spend time (sitting) with her and having quiet moments and conversations about life and her future. Researching careers and colleges is certainly a good use of time on the couch! Hey, there are MUCH worse things that can happen to a person. And you know, it made her a stronger and appreciate life as it was before the “incident.” This Our Towne issue is filled with lots of great events for the family. September not only brings back to school, but lots of fall festivals, village wide garage sales, craft & car shows around Our Towne. Enjoy the beginning of the Fall season and please make sure you let our advertisers know that you saw them here! If you are on Facebook, please “LIKE” Our Towne Magazine for daily news, promotions and events! It is a great way to stay in the loop. Thank you for reading Our Towne Magazine.

The Kiwanis Club of East Greenbush is conducting a shoe collection to raise money for our charitable programs. We will earn funds based on the number of pairs collected. Anyone can help by donating gently worn, used or new shoes. All donated shoes will then be redistributed to a network of microenterprises in developing countries such as Haiti, Honduras and other nations in Central America and Africa. Proceeds from the shoe sales are used to feed, clothe and house their families. Most people have extra shoes in their closets and are probably willing to share with us knowing the reputation of Kiwanis International and to make a difference in the lives of those less fortunate. The Man behind
Michael’s Auto Plaza You may know him as MIKE THE RUSSIAN from his Television and Radio ads, but Michael Rubinchuk is a proud American. Shortly after moving to the USA in 1988, he went to work at Delaware Service Garage in Albany. Fifteen years later, with dreams of opening his own dealership in the community where he and his wife were raising their three sons, he opened Michaels Auto Plaza at 601 Columbia Turnpike in East Greenbush. Michael is a very passionate man about three things: his love of his family, his love of America and of course his love of cars. In his robust voice, he passionately declares that “I feel like a previous Russian. I am 100% American and love what America has given me and my family. I don't even want to think about what life would have been like for us if we didn't come to America!" Hard work, dedication, an appreciation for a solid education and employing good people is what has made Michaels Auto a well respected car dealership throughout the capital district. We know that Michael's Auto Plaza offers hundreds of beautiful used cars on any given day. We know that they offer quality service and financing. We also know that "When the competition gives you a concussion, come see Mike the Russian." But what I wanted to know was: who is this guy and why is this business so successful? Well I have to say that it was a sincere pleasure to chat with him about his success, his life, and why Michael's Auto Plaza has been successful. He credits his General Manager for much of the success, and expansion, of Michael's Auto Plaza. They originally met on February 10, 1982. That of course was when his son Eugene was born. Michael beams with pride and gratitude when he speaks of how Eugene came to work for the family business after graduating from Northeastern University. With degrees in Economics and Finance, Eugene agreed to give his Dad one year. For the past 11 years, Eugene has managed Michaels Auto Plaza and took it to the next level. Michael is grateful for the opportunity to work with his son every day. You can feel the enormous amount of respect he has for his son. Michael is enormously proud of all three sons who have received a total of 9 degrees. "I don't have an education. My wife and I paid for all of those degrees and it was the best investment we could ever make." He and his wife, who is the Bookkeeper for the business, feel that the past 27 years in America have exceeded their wildest dreams. This family is an epic example of what the American Dream is all about The entire team of sales, service and staff at Michael's Auto Plaza are dedicated to helping you get into your next vehicle. Don't see what you want on the lot or website? Just ask! They can get you the car of your dreams! Check out www.michaelsautoplaza. com to view the vast selection of vehicles. They are open 7 days a week for your convenience. This Our Towne family business appreciates your business and will do whatever it takes to earn your sale.

Ask the Audiologist By Madison Hearing Center
Buds Florist and Greenhouse Pumpkins & Gourds Fall Arrangements
Question:
Hardy Mums & Fall Patio Planters
Are there certain foods and/or vitamins that I should look for to promote healthy ears, or that can help preserve my hearing?
Asters, Decorative Cabbage & Kale
Answer: While there are a number of ways to help protect your ears and prevent hearing loss, you may not be aware of the effect that good nutrition has on maintaining good hearing. There a number of vitamins you can take and food that you can eat. To boost blood flow to the inner ear, foods rich in magnesium, such as bananas, artichokes, broccoli, squash, spinach, soybeans and almonds, are most helpful. The research has shown that magnesium may have protective effects on hearing loss, and may even reduce the effects of noise-induced hearing loss. Zinc can be found in spinach, cashews, mushrooms, chocolate and oysters. Research states that zinc may reduce symptoms of tinnitus, if it is medically diagnosed as only a hearing related condition. Some inner ear hearing losses have been attributed to Vitamin D deficiencies, suggesting that adding a steady dose to your diet can help. Sunlight is the primary source of Vitamin D but can be found in food sources including dairy, salmon, tofu, and eggs. Vitamins A,C and E are also important since they keep free radicals in check and strengthens our immune system. Good sources include cantaloupe, oranges and other fruits, dark leafy greens, nuts, sweet potatoes, spinach, bell peppers and carrots. It is in your best interest that you discuss your nutrition needs and hearing concerns with your primary physician and he or she may have suggestions to enhance your diet to maintain good hearing. 9 Reasons a Great Agent is Vital to a Seller By Cathy Graziano
Selling your home without hiring a real estate agent might be tempting, especially if you are in an area attractive to buyers. It's not uncommon for sellers to think (even for a split-second) "How hard can it be to sell on my own?" However, there are probably some challenges they're not considering. Here are some key ways a real estate agent – more specifically a licensed Realtor – proves to be indispensable during the selling process. 1. They offer wide exposure. Find an agent with the education, experience and expertise – along with the backing from a brokerage and powerful brand – to increase exposure of your house to potential buyers. Your agent can devise a marketing plan that stresses showing your property to other agents as well as to the public. 2. They bring objectivity. You probably love your home even with all its faults, but a prospective buyer might not be so impressed. A solid real estate agent can give you helpful tips on things that need to be fixed and ways to improve your home’s appearance and curb appeal. Your agent can also evaluate and focus on features that might set your house apart from the competition. 3. They know the market. Agents can access current market data about pending and recent sales, active agents have seen these homes inside & out and they can use that information to help you establish an appropriate price range for your home. Homeowners often expect unrealistically high prices for their homes, which can turn off buyers who are seeing homes with more competitive prices. A house that is priced accurately from the start will sell quicker and for a higher price than those that are priced too high. 4. They take care of all showings. You may not be available to show your home to prospective buyers, or you may have already moved out, but your agent can show your house even when you are not there. Agents can answer visitors’ questions and take note of their feedback. Further, prospective buyers usually feel more comfortable touring a house when the owner is not present. They might want to comment on a house’s drawbacks. 5. They take security seriously. Real estate agents can vet all potential buyers, including verifying they are preapproved for a home loan and weeding out the “looky-loos” who aren't serious buyers. They also can provide security by pre-screening visitors and accompanying them while they're in the house. 6. They're prepared to negotiate. Agents will negotiate contracts on your behalf. FSBO sellers generally negotiate with a professional representing the buyer's interests. Your agent, on the other hand, can help you negotiate with the buyer’s agent to secure a contract that gets you the best price for your house. 7. They help you avoid legal trouble. Your agent knows the requirements for disclosures in your state. The seller is required to disclose problems that could affect the value of the property. In most states, it’s against the law to hide physical problems such as flood hazards and prior damage. An agent helps prepare necessary disclosure documents. 8. They are with you to the end – and beyond. Getting to the closing table is a complicated process, filled with paperwork, and mistakes can sidetrack the deal. Good real estate agents have safeguards in place to avoid them. A good real estate agent will work with you every step of the way to closing, and can even be a resource for you as you consider your next move. 9. They follow a strict Code of Ethics. Realtors are members of the National Association of Realtors (NAR), and they are required to complete a two-and-a-half hour Code of Ethics course every four years. The repeat training ensures that agents are familiar with the code’s newest provisions and that its key guidelines are reinforced: protecting clients, protecting communities and protecting the industry. TAKE OUR EAR CHALLENGE
Nearly everyone with a pet has experienced the dreaded ear infection. Sometimes you see (or smell) the signs or sometimes it’s discovered during a routine exam. Think you know all about ear infections? Take our ear challenge with these true or false statements. 1.All ears are equal when it comes to being prone to infections. 2.Infections are a minor problem caused by dirty ears. 3.Ear infections aren’t painful, just a pain to clean. 4.These are signs of an infection: tilting the head, foul odor, shaking the head, scratching the ears, or ear discharge. 5.Regularly cleaning your pet’s ears helps prevent infections. 6.Repeated ear infections can lead to hearing loss. 7.A little water from swimming or bathing doesn’t hurt a pet. 8.Cats never get ear infections. 1.False. Floppy ears can make dogs more prone to infections as well as those with hairy ears. Floppy or hairy ears can constrict air flow and create a flourishing environment for yeast or bacteria. Cocker spaniels, Bassett hounds and Schnauzers may have a tendency toward infections. 2.False. While infections are typically caused by bacteria or yeast, accumulated wax, matted hair, debris, foreign bodies, polyps or tumors, parasites and allergies can all cause an infection. 3.False. Ear infections do hurt! The longer an infection goes untreated, the harder it is to treat and there may be damage to the ear canal or eardrum. Prompt treatment means a quicker recovery. 4.True. You might see one, two or all of the signs at once. The infected ear on dogs with upright ears might even droop. 5.True and false. While cleaning infection-prone ears can go a long way in keeping your pets’ ears healthy, healthy ears do not need to be cleaned. And, it’s only helpful if you use the appropriate cleaner correctly. You could cause an infection if you use the wrong product or clean it incorrectly. Never use vinegar, alcohol, any type of oil or hydrogen peroxide. It’s best to discuss with a veterinarian the cleaning frequency, what product to use and the right way to use it. 6.Unfortunately, it’s true. Chronic infections can lead to hearing loss or aural hematomas. 7.False. Sometimes just a little water can lead to an infection. It’s best to keep your pets’ ears dry when exposed to water during baths or swimming. 8.False. Cats are not usually prone to infections like dogs are, but they can get them. Mites are the usual offenders, but sometimes there are other causes. How did you do? All eight right – You’re simply ear-resistible! Seven right – You’re an ear-above the rest. Six right: Your ears might be tingling. Five right: Maybe it’s time for a little ear cleaning. Four right: Time to get those ears checked. Three right: Oops! Past due for an exam. Two right: Is your head tilting to one side? One right: Go straight to the veterinarian’s office. Do not pass go. —Dr. Catherine Ruggiero
Word of Mouth By Joseph R. L apinski, D.D.S.
www.LapinskiDentaL.com Question: I was referred to an oral surgeon to get an implant to replace a missing tooth. The surgeon wanted me to have a CAT scan prior to the implant. I thought CAT scans were for medical procedures? Answer: While it’s true that CAT scans have been mainly used in medicine, these days we are using them in dentistry, especially when implants are involved. The traditional X-ray or radiograph that we take in our offices is a 2 dimensional image – and in most cases gives us most of the information we need to view, diagnose and plan for your treatment. In my office, the X-ray is my only tool to actually “see” anything not on the surface of the tooth, like cavities starting between teeth, periodontal disease, developing or fractured teeth, abscesses, impacted teeth and even bone loss. With regards to an implant – the most important initial information we are looking for is the quality and quantity of bone in an area where an implant is going to be placed. That information can help us determine if first and foremost, you are a candidate for an implant, the size & angulation of an implant but also give us an indication about the health of your bone and therefore a prognosis of the procedure. Your jaw is 3 dimensional. The CAT scan provides much more accurate information for the surgeon when an implant is being placed. Some of the details a surgeon wants to know about is the proximity to the sinus or nerve to prevent unnecessary damage or exposure. One of the latest developments to help both patients and doctors is that our dental imaging software can now be superimposed into the CAT scan to create a surgical guide to use at the time of the surgery. The guide is an even more accurate tool to be used to ensure proper placement with a good margin of safety. The more accurate the information available the better the outcome for you. Good luck with your procedure. Implants have changed the way we see “teeth for a lifetime” and can give patients so many more options to keep smiling. Please continue to ask your questions, visit us on the web www.LapinskiDental.com, Like us on Facebook & we look forward to meeting you in 2015! DrJoe@LapinskiDental.com

I’m a TERRIBLE PATIENT By Daryl Bart dcbart1@gmail.com
I just proved it to myself AGAIN was leaving the Physical Therapist’s office (shout out to the gang at Columbia PT for helping me get back in fighting shape from my Grand Canyon tumble (another time). Let’s just say Fred Flintstone wanted his foot back. Them: “So would you like to make your next set of appointments” Me: “I’ll make 1 for next week” Them: “ummmm...ok” (we both know I’m supposed to go 2-3 times a week) Me: “I’m at the edge of my compliance. I mean I did 3 this week.” (innocent shrug) I
Compliance is Joe’s word. Actually Non-Compliance is Joe’s word for me I roll my eyes when he says it. I mean, I have a positive attitude I’m generally happy
I’m also generally healthy & can’t really remember being sick.
I do remember kind of wishing for the famed “stomach bug that went around”. When my husband had it (he’s not that good of a patient either) he lost 10 pounds in 2 days. I know that is twisted thinking but a girl can dream. I quickly retracted that wish, chalked it up to a karma thing and thoroughly washed my hands, twice. Plus, knowing me, the only thing that would make me feel better if I did get the bug would be bagels, and I wouldn’t even lose a pound. WHY is it so hard for me to follow directions? Me: “I have a headache” Joe: “Did you take Tylenol?” Me: “No” Joe: “I knew that” I’m secretly shocked everyday that my son wears his retainer without being asked and even soaks it once a week, like he was told. I’d find my retainer across the room in the morning, having been torn out and flung in the night. They had to cement the retainers to the bottom AND the top after my teeth shifted. I had braces in my 30’s. My daughter too. She wears her rubberbands, takes cough syrup like a champ when necessary & says things like, “Dr. Heck told me to”. When she first started school she had tummy aches. We suspected it was her diet. As a kid with celiac disease, finding good bag lunches for a 5 year old that were gluten free back when gluten free wasn’t a household term was a challenge. I took her to the doctor to just make sure...prognosis - she’d live. She told Allison, “I want you to eat 1 piece of fruit & a whole bottle of water at school every day” Surprise! The tummy aches stopped. She needed fiber, hydration and a more regular (ahem) schedule. She still does this every day without me asking - yes, this middle schooler starts her day with a good breakfast shake she makes herself and always has fruit and water with lunch. I spent my lunch money on tater tots.
Frankly, I’m almost shocked my teenagers brush their teeth without being asked, and for 2 minutes, and floss and don’t rush thru it. I honestly think if I wasn’t married to a dentist I’d skip it sometimes - but I couldn’t withstand the shaming. It’s a good thing. SO having this bum ankle, in the glaring light of all these “goodie two shoes” in my house with well flossed teeth is is well - a bummer. They’re all like, “Do you need help?”, “Where is your ace bandage?”.. blah blah blah I know it will take time. I’m trying to be a good patient. It’s just SO hard. I like jumping up and down to exercise I don’t like elevating my leg I don’t like foot exercises to do at home (ssshhh)
So I’ve decided to look at it like a gift. Karma. If I can turn the situation around and look at it in a different light, make it a goal instead of a directive maybe I’ll be better. Here goes….If I hadn’t hurt my ankle, I wouldn’t be practicing PIYO (yoga/pilates) which is gentle on my joints. Strength flexibility & balance are all things I want more of, but I’d never in a million years just do yoga if my ankle was ok. So, in fact, I was LUCKY to fall into the Grand Canyon. Joe: “Stop saying that, you didn’t fall INTO the Grand Canyon, you fell AT the Grand Canyon” Me: “Same difference….can you get me some Advil and an icepack?”
