OCTOBER 2014

Dear Our Towne Readers,

I have to say that there is just something so special about the beginning of the school year; the promise of what is to come. For teachers & students, the start of the academic year is a new chapter and a chance to start over. I am personally celebrating & adjusting to a new chapter as well. As I approached my 2 year anniversary, as publisher of Our Towne Magazine, I made one of the toughest decisions of my life. I decided to leave a career that brought me great personal joy & fulfillment since I was a graduate student many years ago... So that I could focus more on developing Our Towne Magazine, focus on my family, and enjoy more balance in my life! After 16 years, I did not return to a job that involved Managing School-to-Work & Vocational Education Programs for students in Special Education programs. It was a fantastic & rewarding career that was beyond perfect for me as a mother. Juggling two demanding jobs over the past two years was difficult, to say the least. Being a mom who had the luxury of working from home, I have been blessed with the opportunity to be home for my children. No day care or after school programs. I could volunteer at school during the day, host play dates during the week & run the kids around town after school. However, working from home also means that you can potentially work 7 days a week and up to 12 hours a day. Whenever & wherever you are. All the time or not at all. The smart phone is a mixed blessing! Two careers was just too much for me, as a mom of two children. So, I made a change... Life is too short. I think one full time job is enough for me. As Our Towne Magazine has continued to grow, beyond my expectations, I realized I was faced with making a decision to focus on just one career. SCARY decision to make, but I took a leap of faith (in myself) and quit my first “career.” So, now I want to thank all of the advertisers, readers & community groups that have supported me & Our Towne Magazine over the past two years. If you did not have faith in me, and Our Towne Magazine, I would not have been faced with this decision! I am a self-professed workaholic who will do pretty much anything I can to ensure the success of my magazine. I am able to expand my Facebook feature; connecting the community through print and Facebook every day. So, thank you for your support and I look forward to making Our Towne Magazine even better in the future. Please “LIKE” Our Towne Magazine Rensco on Facebook so you can stay connected! THANK YOU FOR READING Our Towne!

THE OUR TOWNE SPOTLIGHT SHINES ON... TOP FORM

Tricia Smith-Gerkman, owner of Aspire Performance, LLC had the opportunity in 2013 to become an affiliate of Top Form Inc., specializing in Sports medicine and Personal Training. Aspire Performance, better known as Top Form of East Greenbush, offers services in personal training and rehabilitation to both adult and youth clients. Recommended by local physicians, therapists & rehabilitation facilities, Top Form is often the solution after physical therapy or medical rehabilitation ends. Tricia, a mother of 5, was impressed with the successful training and rehabilitation her son experienced after an injury. She and the rest of her family quickly realized the great benefits of working with the Personal Trainers at Top Form. In the past year and a half, Tricia has enjoyed owning this growing, successful business AND has personally shed 40lbs. Tricia and her team are very welcoming, encouraging and truly have made sure that Top Form is not an intimidating environment. Everyone on the staff have their own stories to share about their weight loss & injury rehabilitation journey. One of the staff members has lost 90lbs on his fitness journey. The staff includes: Tricia Smith-Gerkman, owner & Certified Personal Trainer. Tricia’s son, Shawn Gerkman, is also a Certified Personal Trainer. Josh Rivers, Vice President & Master Trainer, is also a Certified Personal Trainer and Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist. Rounding out the team is Jackie Coyne who is a Rehabilitation Specialist. She has a B.S. & M.S. in Athletic Training and is also a Performance Enhancement Specialist. Many clients are referred to Top Form by orthopedic doctors, Physical Therapists such as Deb Ciprioni, PT at Comprehensive Physical Therapy Solutions, and primary care physicians. Top Form is seen as a “medically oriented gym” that not only treats injury, but prevents injury. Whatever brings you through the door; the staff is positive and attentive to the details of YOUR individualized goals.

Tricia firmly believes in giving back to the community that she lives and works in. This year, they organized the Run for Help that raises money for Domestic Violence organizations, supports the Ichabod Crane & Maple Hill Booster Clubs with fundraising and event support. Top Form was very proud to sponsor the Capital Regions Men’s Baseball team, the Brooklyn Dodgers 33 division, who gave Top Form their trophy after winning the leagues championship! The roster was made up of many area school coaches who are familiar with the successes of their athletes while training at top form. In addition, they have donated their time to assist with testing for Section II Local High School Football, organize 5K teams for Top Form members… This is the SHORT list. The Personal Training & Fitness programs at Top Form, Inc. are fun, focused, goal-oriented, empowering, life-changing and progressive. Many gyms offer personal training services that will give you determined goals for yourself and teach you how to use the equipment. At Top Form, the Personal Trainers work directly with you throughout the process. They’re your own personal teachers, trainers & cheerleaders. If you need some motivation, encouragement and professional advice on how to reach your goals, Top Form is the place for you. Preventing and treating injury are a big part of the equation, as well. Whether the goal is weight loss, injury prevention or rehabilitation, strength training or maintaining a healthy lifestyle, the end result is always an increase in self-confidence. Book your consultation now!

Top Form Provides:

Top Form is much more than a gym. You make an appointment and meet with a personal trainer who works with you on your individual personal fitness or rehabilitation goals. They have worked with individuals ranging from ages 8 up to 75. These people include Division 1 athletes, to senior citizens and everyone in between. “All of our members get the same attention.” From shedding excess pounds, to learning how to walk again or master daily living skills. Tricia notes that “some members have overcome great challenges, and they continue with us to maintain strength and prevent future injury.” Every member’s goals are their own and the” team” is there to help you achieve success. Tricia notes she absolutely loves seeing the “non- athletic” kids come in, get into shape, and learn how to maintain a healthy & active lifestyle The team of practitioners prides themselves in the amount of time and attention they give to each client. When we met for this article, they all shared with me many positive, personal & heartwarming stories of their client’s journeys. Developing relationships with their members is “the best part of the job.” "The folks at top form know their stuff. Everyone is so friendlyand helpful, and you work hard-- and love it. I was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes and one of the many things to get this disease under control was to exercise more. When I went to Top Form, their customized exercise program was the ticket I needed to motivate me to drop my blood sugar numbers to a reasonable level. The trainers are awesome and they kick your butt when you need it! Cheryl Trefzger, Valatie, NY We are very fortunate to have found Top Form. Our son, Andy suffered a Traumatic Brain Injury in a motocross accident a little over a year ago. In addition to his regular PT,OT and Speech therapy, he has been working w Jackie, the rehab specialist at Top Form about three days a week. He has made excellent progress in his recovery, and enjoys coming there. The staff and general atmosphere is very upbeat and has made his work outs more enjoyable and therefore more productive. Bob Cummings I started working out with Josh Rivers at Top Form the summer before 7th grade. My main goal was to bulk up for football and gain quicker feet for LAX. With a lot of hard work, Josh and the trainers have not only helped me reach my short term goals but have pushed me to reach results I did not know were possible at my age. They encourage me to do my best every day while making it fun too…. Ben Forte, Freshman, JV Football Columbia High School

Word of Mouth By Joseph R. L apinski, D.D.S. Dear Dr. Lapinski: My dentist asked me if I’ve ever considered getting braces to correct my crowding. I don’t like the crowding but I’m in my 40’s. Should I consider braces at my age? Great question. Your age definitely factors into the discussion of whether or not you can, should or want to get braces. If you have questions or concerns, scheduling a consult with an orthodontist is really the best 1st step. When an orthodontist looks at your mouth they assess your chief concern and how to fix it. Is it crowding, spacing, how you bite, how they look when you smile, etc. etc. Your orthodontic care is typically coordinated thru your general dental office to assist in monitoring your treatment. They’ll likely ask if you go regularly. They want to know if they will be treating a healthy mouth. As in a house, if the foundation is compromised, you won’t put on an addition. They check for gum disease. Untreated gum disease can prevent the body from being able to deposit the bone needed to stabilize the teeth after they are moved and can result in teeth that might look straight but are now loose. If you have untreated cavities prior to treatment, it may be impossible to address the decay once the braces are cemented in place. Any treatment will likely be postponed until you take care of it. Although traditional bracket braces are still the most popular choice, an especially nice option for some patients is Invisalign. It works on the same principles as traditional braces. There are no metal brackets or wires but uses a system of multiple, clear acrylic aligners (like a retainer) to move your teeth, a little at a time. Not all people are candidates for a retainer system. Accuracy, speed & outcomes have dramatically improved over the years. So, regardless of your age, if you don’t like the way your smile looks, there may be a variety of options for you. Good Luck ! PS‌If you end up with braces be careful of sticky Halloween candy as October 31st is right around the corner. Send questions to DrJoe@LapinskiDental.com.

Pet Peeves By Daryl Bart

So, let me ask you this. Am I the only person that changes toilet paper rolls in public places? I know. Silly question. Last weekend I was literally in 3 places that were out of toilet paper, the cardboard tube was still there & the replacement roll was resting on top of it… it was almost comical if it didn’t annoy me so much. Plus, the new roll had evidentially been utilized, but not actually replaced onto the roll? Why? Isn’t it just more pleasant to take toilet paper off the roll versus holding it? This annoyance made me focus on the other things that get to me. I didn’t want to vent but when I started writing them down, it felt so good and made me laugh a little! I wondered, Am I alone in this? Do these things bug you too? Like, what about the folks you see leaving their shopping cart in the parking lot? Come on…you just walked in, walked around all the aisles, and walked out – really? Walking to the curb or to the cart corral is drawing the line on steps? Or, going out to a restaurant only to have a bad white napkins that leave lint on your lap. Who doesn’t wear black to a nice restaurant?

Or, dealing with the “anonymous” cell phone company. Does it have to be that hard? Every time? Or, for that matter, dealing with the “anonymous” cable company. Ditto. Or, the fact that on an “anonymous” airline, the first 2 bags fly free, but only if they each weigh under 50 lbs. However if you travel with a single bag that is just a little over 50 lbs you have to pay for it … as if paying for it somehow makes it ok for the baggage handler to lift it? Or, being called ma’am (gets me wiggy) Or, the ridiculous price of popcorn & drinks at the movies. They have made us into sneaky snack hoarders. Or, school sports that start practicing 2 seasons ahead (didn’t we just finish with baseball?)

Or, Folks in the easy pass lane with no easy pass

Or, the fact that the post office closes around lunch time. When do people go to the post office?

What about receiving multiple copies of the same catalog on the same day?

Or, endless car dealership commercials – and if you flip radio stations in the car – they are on all 6 pre-set stations at the same time.

Or, recorded marketing calls to your cell phone?

And especially, the “unnamed kids” who – even though they are reminded every, single, solitary day of their existence to pick up the shoes that are on the floor right next to the “shoe bucket” still don’t. Or the fact that the same un-named kids who can’t seem to grasp the concept that you are actually clean when you dry off after a shower & it’s OK to just hang your towel and use it again rather than putting the wet one in the laundry with all of the other clothes… EVERY DAY.

Or, realizing you need reading glasses all the time (just a bummer – I know not really pertinent to this – but it is annoying) Or, 14 day return policies. Who can get there again in 14 days? That being said, what about going shopping somewhere, forgetting your coupon but they don’t give you the discount but offer a price adjustment if you come back within a few days….See return policy pet peeve above.

Well, I’ve done it – I’ve both cured myself by venting and frustrated myself since I know this could go on and on and on…so I will stop and drink my full glass of water and hope there is a fresh roll in the bathroom!

By Nassau Veterinary Clinic, PLLC Introducing Dr. Catherine Ruggiero Nassau Veterinary Clinic is very excited to add Dr. Catherine Ruggiero to our team! Dr. Ruggiero grew up in Saratoga Springs, and has returned to this area because she considers upstate NY “the most beautiful location in the country.” NVC partner and veterinarian Lisa Dietrich recalls “we selected Dr. Ruggiero because of her excellent communication skills and personable nature. “We are very excited about this project,” said Superintendent Bob Horan. “We have an opportunity to bring our Middle and High School students together in one building and create more opportunities for them by becoming more efficient. We also will create more flexible classroom spaces and modern science labs for our teachers, update our technology and improve security at both our schools.” A vote on the Capital Project is scheduled for the middle of November. A newsletter detailing the Capital Project will be mailed this fall, along with frequent website, Facebook and Twitter updates. The public is also welcome to attend Board of Education meetings where the project will be discussed.

A central part of the Capital Project is renovating the High School to create a somewhat self-contained, student-centered learning community for 7th and 8th graders who have unique educational needs. Moving them to the High School would create more opportunities for all students in the building; faculty and staff could work together more efficiently and students could take more advanced classes. Existing classrooms in the building would be opened up to create more flexible spaces, helping teachers deliver even more individualized programs to meet the needs of students with various learning styles. A 6,500-square-foot addition would also be added to the back of the school to create modern classrooms and science labs. Starting in 2017-18, sixth grade students would stay at Castleton Elementary School, which was designed for the possibility of another grade level during the last Capital Project. Improving building security would be a key consideration. A redesigned front entrance would ensure visitors enter the front office before accessing the main school building. A K-6 science lab would provide faculty with proper facilities to teach a higher level science curriculum for all elementary students. The Capital Project is expected to have little or no impact on the school budget because of retiring debt and 76% state aid reimbursement (86% for security-related items) for the project. The State Education Department is considering a possible cost for this project of $23 million. Once they decide upon the maximum cost allowed, a refined project cost will be developed for voter approval in November. The district also expects to save money in the long-run by operating two buildings instead of three. The Middle School will continue to be leased out for community and business uses to ensure it doesn’t become an eyesore. “We want to put our money into student programs not buildings,” said Mr. Horan. “With the state possibly looking in the future to lower its state aid reimbursement, this is the perfect opportunity to take advantage of state funding to ensure a quality education for our students for decades to come.” Please visit:

Home Cooking with

S tephanie By Stephanie Daly

Homemade Crock Pot Chicken & Dumplings 3 boneless skinless chicken breasts (salted & peppered) 4 cups chicken broth 2 cans cream of chicken soup 1 cup white cooking wine (NOTE: if you are freezing this, do not add cooking wine until you have defrosted & are ready to cook) 1 onion, chopped 1 cup of carrots, chopped 1 cup of celery, chopped (optional, depending on how veggie-heavy you like yours) 1 tsp celery salt 1 tsp chicken bouillon granules Dumplings: 2 cups of flour 4 tsp baking powder 1 tsp salt 3/4 cup of milk 4 tablespoons melted butter If you are going to go ahead and cook this, put the chicken on the bottom of the crockpot, salt and pepper, and then add liquids. I whisk my liquids together with the spices and the cream of chicken soup, and then pour over the chicken. Add the veggies. Cook on low for 8 hours. About an hour before the end of the cook time, remove chicken and shred it, and then add dumplings- drop them in and then sort of push them into the liquid so that they absorb some of the yummy broth. The dumplings are done when they look like biscuits on the inside. NOTE- DO NOT LIFT LID UNTIL 45 MINUTES INTO COOKING!!! Dumpling instructions: Combine all dumpling ingredients- the mixture will be thick. Don't over mix! Form into medium-sized balls. If you are cooking now, drop them into your soup about an hour before the end of cook time. If freezing, flash-freeze the balls on a baking pan and then put in a ziploc bag (separate from the soup!). Defrost these in the fridge until you are ready to add them to the soup. Enjoy! Join our cooking group here- www.facebook.com/groups/crockpotrecipesathome/

Kristy’s Barn has been apart of Schodack for three generations. Kristy’s Barn was established as Glenwood Fruit Farm in 1910 by Kris’ grandparents, Fred and Jessie Lemka. In these early days her grandfather sold water, honey, planted fruit trees, milked cows and had an egg route. In 1951 Kris’ parents, Ray and Sue Lemka, bought the farm and increased the orchard, started pressing cider, and purchased the First United Methodist church’s former building on Rt 9 and 20 and opened a retail market, Appleland Farms. In 1994 Ken and Kris Johnson bought the farm and moved the retail market to the farm on Brookview Road and opened Kristy’s Barn. Since then the farm has continued to take many different directions adding pastured raised chickens, farmers’ markets, vegetable production, U-Pick , 100% solar energy and a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture). Our farm’s enterprises have continued to change as our community needs and farmers’ desires have changed but our incredible view of the Helderberg has remained a constant!

Finding a home that fits your lifestyle and values By Catherine A. Graziano

Whether this is your first home or your last, it is probably the single most important and expensive purchase you will ever make. That’s why you deserve a real estate professional with the knowledge and skill to assist you in making informed decisions and to negotiate on your behalf. With years of experience in the business, I can provide you the expertise and personalized attention you expect and deserve – before, during, and after the transaction. I’ll take the time to discover what is important to you and work diligently until you are completely satisfied. It always helps to brainstorm and prioritize a list of all the features you are looking for. We’ll start with the basics including style of house, size, number of bathrooms and bedrooms, desired neighborhood, commutes to jobs and proximity to schools, parks and retail services. Then, we’ll discuss the items on your dream list. The goal is to find properties that first meet your essential needs and then as many of the extras that you can reasonably afford. Matching the right home to the right buyer is my specialty. We will investigate various neighborhoods and tour houses to help you get a solid feel for property values. We’ll target your desired location and search for a home that fits your lifestyle and values. To save you time, I pre-screen numerous properties to find ones that closely match your list of needs and wishes. Then, I contact the seller and their agents and schedule showings to fit your schedule. As we tour properties, I will point out their attributes as well as advice you on taking a closer look at potential problem areas such as water seepage, ventilation, and finish work.

518-788-1414

Of course, there is no substitute for a professional home inspection once you make an offer, but knowing what to look for before entering negotiations will result in fewer surprises later on.

www.t-bconstruction.com )XOO\ ,QVXUHG )UHH (VWLPDWHV

Now that you have found the perfect home, I’ll help you determine a realistic offer price based on a general market overview and recent sales of similar properties. Next, I will submit a formal offer including property inspection and financing contingencies for your protection. Then, I negotiate on your behalf. The negotiating process requires skill, experience, and complete objectivity. I can provide the expertise you need while sticking to the facts. When I go to the negotiating table, I go fully prepared, armed with the right information, keeping your best interests in mind. I will also walk you through the entire closing process. I will do my best to ensure your deal closes smoothly, and without unnecessary costs. Oh, by the way, if you’re looking to sell your existing home, I can help with that, too. Even after the transaction is complete, I am at your service. My commitment to you is lifelong. Cathy is a resident of East Greenbush and an associate broker with RE/MAX Park Place. She has over 20 years experience in real estate and is a member of NYSAR Professional Standards, Education Management & Housing Opportunities Committees. “I would appreciate the opportunity to earn your business & referrals.” ~ Cathy
