The Our Towne Spotlight Shines On... Chris & Kevin Webb proudly call their 450 acres of family farmland Webbs Goldkrest Farms. It is the original Webb’s Family Farm, run by this father & son today. They dedicate their lives to the 450 acre family farm that produces corn, squash, tomatoes, melons, strawberries, pumpkins, cucumbers, cabbage, beans, raspberries & more. Now the farm stand is bursting with thousands of pumpkins, mums and items for your fall decorating.
What you need to know as the consumer is that you can buy genuine Webb Farm produce at Webbs GOLDKREST farm stand on 9J, and at local retail stores, such as Hannaford. You may see other farm stands around town with the Webb name, but those products are not harvested by Chris & Kevin Webb in OUR TOWNE. The fruits and vegetables of their labor are only sold at their store located at 3447 River Road (9J) in East Greenbush, and at large retail stores.
Order your Seasoned Firewood NOW! Delivery or Pick UP
Chris & Kevin Webb work long hours, 7 days a week, all year long. You can tell a true farmer by their hands. When Chris Webb and I speak about his farm; you can see the pride & exhaustion on his face. And his hands are proof that he farms the land that his father devoted his life to. Chris started working with his Dad at 16, and has never strayed from his career as a farmer. His son Kevin is following in his father’s footsteps. It is a true family business, that relies on dedicated, hard working employees to be successful. As you welcome fall, be sure to visit the family farm stand and pick from the largest locally grown pumpkin selection. Mums galore, corn stalks, gourds, Indian corn, maple syrup, jelly, corn wreaths & even Indian corn wreaths. Bring the kids down and let them run through the grass to find that perfect pumpkin! (Don’t forget the camera). There will even be farm fresh vegetables such as winter squash. It is a farm to table local business that appreciates every sale and support from the community. From planting the seeds, to picking the product, they bring you produce and plants fresh off their land. In addition, they sell to wholesalers, other farmers and markets. The day after Thanksgiving, Webbs Goldkrest Family Farm will be bursting with Christmas Trees, wreaths, kissing balls and other natural decorative items. They even will deliver your tree if requested. Watch out for the date of the annual holiday party where Santa pays a visit and takes free photos with kids of all ages. It is a festive event! Right down from Route 9 near Rensselaer, they are conveniently located and appreciate your business. From Route 9, you can also take Hayes Road down to 9J, take a right and find them a few miles down 9J.. And remember, You may see other farm stands around town with the Webb name, but those products are not harvested by Chris & Kevin Webb in OUR TOWNE.

30 Years of Orthodontics in Our Towne
If you had a heart condition, would you see your general doctor or go to a specialist? Your bite and smile deserve the same, specialized attention. Gary Thomas Puccio, DDS, has been practicing dentistry for nearly 30 years and is a board-certified orthodontist in Schodack, where he lives with his family. He is a local guy, having graduated from Maple Hill High School. He and his wife, Eileen started the practice in 1987, to be closer to home and family. I personally met Dr. Puccio when I was looking for a second opinion for my daughters orthodontic care. I can say he is very conservative in his approach and does not do unnecessary, expensive and uncomfortable work! His treatment plan was nothing like the previous practice I had been using and switched immediately. My daughter has a beautiful smile and we have been thrilled with all aspects or working with this practice. As a board certified orthodontist, a dental specialty that requires years of education beyond the completion of dental school, he is the most educated person to meet your orthodontic needs in our area. He is dedicated to providing you with the best smile and the most positive overall experience. His practice is modern, efficient & highly regarded in Our Towne. Because of his own experience with orthodontic treatment, Dr. Puccio is familiar with many of the concerns a person might have when considering an orthodontist. His goal is to treat you like family with the most trusted, advanced dental technology available. In fact, some dentists in the East Greenbush and Schodack area send their own families to Dr. Puccio for quality, trusted orthodontic care. It’s a testament to the high quality results by Dr. Puccio & his knowledgeable orthodontic staff.
Their main goal is to achieve the smile that you have always dreamed of. He has a large staff that keeps the office running on a tight & efficient schedule. The office managers are on top of all of the” behind the scene, important details such as scheduling and billing.” Even text messages & e-mails are available to remind you of appointments. A friendly & highly organized atmosphere allows patients and their parents to enjoy visits and feel comfortable. . Many of his staff are previous patients; most have been with the practice for over 10 years. In addition to braces and other traditional orthodontic treatments, Dr. Puccio provides a wide variety of methods to correct bite concerns and produce properly aligned smiles. Dr. Puccio is one of the very few Invisalign Premier Preferred Providers available to those living in southern Rensselaer & northern Columbia county. As an Invisalign dentist, Dr. Puccio is able to give you options as an orthodontic patient you might not get at a general dentist that doesn’t meet the rigorous requirements to be an Invisalign Premier Preferred Provider. After your initial evaluation, Dr. Puccio will gladly discuss your options with you and then let you decide the path of orthodontic treatment that works best for you and your family. Dr. Puccio and his entire staff believe the best orthodontic treatment begins with this type of “co-diagnosis.” Part of their commitment to serving patients includes providing information that helps them to make more informed decisions about their orthodontic needs. They believe a well-informed patient is better able to achieve and maintain the smile they’ve always dreamed of. When you visit their office, conveniently located next to the Schodack Town Hall, right off I-90 at exit 11 in the village of Castleton-on-Hudson, your smile is their top priority. Ask around and you will hear from many happy patients all around Our Towne. Dr. Puccio and his staff make the process comfortable, easy and, believe it or not, enjoyable. Call them today at 518-477-2727 to set up a consultation. You can even use your flex spending money for the treatments! To learn more about the services that Dr. Puccio offers, check out the website at: www.garypucciodds.com.

Our Towne’s Mission: To connect local businesses and organizations to the consumers that live in their communities. We highlight what Southern Rensselaer & Northern Columbia Counties have to offer. Our Towne Magazine content can be read in print, online & via Facebook. 20% of the magazine is donated to the communities served for promotion of events.
Our Towne Magazine’s goal is
“Connecting the Communtiy”
Distribution 18,000+ Our Towne Magazine “connects the community” by directly mailing 17,000 copies to homes and businesses in the following communities: Rensselaer, Schodack, Castleton, Nassau, East Greenbush, North Greenbush, Averill Park, Wynantskill, West Sand Lake, Valatie, Kinderhook & Niverville.
Plus another 1,000 copies in High Traffic Locations!
October 2015
Dear Readers, Happy Fall! It is officially upon us. This magazine is absolutely packed with great community events such as Fall Festivals, Corn Mazes, Hay Rides, and many Craft Fairs & Flea Market events. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and many of our hair salons in Our Towne are offering PINK extensions for you to show your support for the cause. It would be hard to find someone who has not been affected by breast cancer. The need for a cure is greater than ever. Early detection is the key to stopping this fatal disease. The many family farms in Our Towne, like Webbs Goldkrest Family Farm, Kristy’s Barn, Krug’s Farm & Greenhouse, Becker’s... count on your patronage. They are paying local taxes and live in your community. Remember this before buying local produce or seasonal products like plants, flowers, wreaths or Christmas Trees at big box or grocery stores. Many of the advertisers in this issue absolutely need your support if they are to survive. I think we can all agree that we need more businesses in this area. Think about how much power you have when you spend your hard earned money. Small, local businesses will not survive if you pick up items at the big chain stores. Thank you for reading Our Towne. LIKE us on Facebook to get the content in this issue, plus current events and community news every day. Have a wonderful October and a safe and happy Halloween!

“How can acupuncture treat so many different conditions?”
Upstate Community Acupuncture www.StuckUpstate.com • 518-810-7053 568 Columbia Tpke, East Greenbush, NY
In his book Healing Back Pain, Dr. Sarno wondered why so many of his patients complained about back pain, when a review of medical records showed that just a few generations ago, it was not a common reason for a medical visit. He came to the conclusion that most of his patients had structurally sound backs, and that the cause of their pain was “all in their head.”
Quality acupuncture care, at a price you can afford! $20-$50
By this he meant that we need a socially acceptable place to store unresolved stress, and one way many people respond to holding stress is to subconsciously reduce blood circulation to the muscles in their back and neck, causing pain. Based on his findings, he stopped recommending bed rest for back pain, and instead instructs his patients to exercise and to practice other new ways to release their stress. Dr. Sarno discovered what has always been taught in Chinese medicine, that there is a direct link between the body, mind, and spirit of a patient. Since most of my patients tell me that acupuncture helps them to de-stress, reduces their pain, and helps them to sleep better, it makes sense that acupuncture can help so many different conditions.
Pain anywhere in the body, stress, anxiety, headaches & many others
Acupuncture is simple and powerful, it is effective for many conditions including:

Kiwanis SHOE DRIVE The Kiwanis Club of East Greenbush is conducting a shoe collection to raise money for our charitable programs. We will earn funds based on the number of pairs collected. Anyone can help by donating gently worn, used or new shoes. All donated shoes will then be redistributed to a network of micro-enterprises in developing countries such as Haiti, Honduras and other nations in Central America and Africa. Proceeds from the shoe sales are used to feed, clothe and house their families. Most people have extra shoes in their closets and are probably willing to share with us knowing the reputation of Kiwanis International and to make a difference in the lives of those less fortunate. 6 Decisions to Make Before the Home Search By Cathy Graziano
In the market for a new home but have no idea where to start? There are several decisions you should begin to make before you even start your home search. By asking yourself the right questions, you can quickly pinpoint what you want – and can afford – in your next home. 1. What's your budget? See how your finances stand up to the 28/36 rule, which lenders use to see what you can afford to pay each month. Going through the mortgage pre-approval process lets you know how much lenders will allow you to borrow – plus it helps you show sellers that you have the funds to backup your offer. 2. What do you need in your new home? How many bedrooms or bathrooms do you need? What about a large kitchen, a home office or a playroom for the kids? How many cars need covered parking? It's critically important to ensure the home you select meets your family and lifestyle needs. 3. Do you want a condo or single-family home? Condos come with much less maintenance. You typically won't be shoveling snow in the winter or replacing the roof, but you'll likely pay monthly association fees to cover services and repairs in the community. Houses, on the other hand, come with more privacy and freedom to customize. They also come with full responsibility for maintenance. 4. How do you feel about living under covenants? Depending on where you buy, you may have to pay homeowner association (HOA) fees in addition to your mortgage. There are benefits to HOAs, such as maintenance, community centers, and maybe even a pool or gym. But you also could be faced with more restrictive rules about the look of the outside of your home, down to the color of your front door, types of window coverings, and whether you can plant flowers in your yard. 5. What school district do you want to be near? Even if you don't have children in the house, local schools will affect your property value. Prospective homebuyers tend to search with education in mind. Do your research on the schools in the areas you'd like to live in. 6. Should the home be move-in ready? Ask yourself how much elbow grease you're willing to put into a home – or how much you'll pay someone else to do the work. Fixerupper homes can be great after the work is done, but you'll want to figure out your renovation budget before you start your home search. A 203k home-renovation loan might be the right resource for you. If you're not ready for the extra financial commitment of rehabbing a home, or you can't or don't want to wait for remodeling projects to finish up, then a home that's move-in ready might be right for you. After considering all these factors, you'll be ready to start the home search with a clearer picture of where you're headed. When that time comes, I hope you will consider letting me guide you all the way there.

Ask the Audiologist By Madison Hearing Center
Q
uestion: Does Health Insurance cover anything for hearing test and hearing aids?
Answer:
Dr. Patrick Bergmann
Unfortunately, there is no blanket answer for this question. Coverage varies widely, depending on the insurance company and plan. Most peoples insurances will cover one hearing test a year, and you may have a co-pay depending on your insurance. A hearing test will include a diagnostic evaluation determining the type and severity of a persons heairng loss. Some insurance companies also require a referral/prescription from your primary care physician, so if you feel there has been a change in your hearing, you should discuss this with your primary care doctor, who can refer you on for audiologic testing. As for hearing aid coverage, in recent years more insurers have been providing some hearing aid benefit; CDPHP and New York Empire are two examples of companies that offer such benefit. Shoud you have a question regarding your coverage, it is recommended you call your insurance provider. In many cases, the staff at the audiology clinic can also help you determine what type and amount, if any, coverage you have.

Word of Mouth By Joseph R. L apinski, D.D.S.
www.LapinskiDentaL.com A patient recently asked me if I had gone to school locally. Unfortunately no. It would certainly be nice if there was one, but students that want to become a dentist or specialist will need to travel - to Buffalo, Long Island, New York City, Boston and beyond. There are a couple hospital based postgraduate, Dental Residency programs here. A one (1) year dental residency is now required in NYS for all licensed dentists. I completed mine at St. Clare’s hospital in Schenectady, which is no longer there. Many of the residency resources were absorbed in the Ellis Hospital program, but locally a dental school graduate can also go to St. Peter’s or the VA. What we do have in our field is an incredible resource: the Dental Hygiene program at Hudson Valley Community College. It’s a 3 year degree program (1 year of pre requisites before admittance to the 2 year degree program) and generates about 50 hygienists per year. Almost all of the hygienists I’ve personally worked with over the years are graduates (and a few are teachers there) of this program and I feel HVCC does a very good job educating their hygienists. There’s a clinic on site at the HVCC campus. When I first moved to my East Greenbush practice, I worked as an instructor at the Dental Hygiene Department. I got to know many of the instructors and students at the time. Since that time, the clinic has had a makeover, it has upgraded to current technology. The clinic allows the hygienists in training to provide care at a reasonable cost, under supervision. A patient of the clinic can receive cleanings, x-rays, sealants and even periodontal treatment. The clinic staff refers patients to local dental offices to get diagnoses for situations where they suspect the patient requires additional treatment, like a potential cavity, etc. On a personal note, I was born and raised in Brooklyn & Queens, NY. I went to The University at Albany for my undergraduate degree in biology, and then on to the University of Maryland for my dental degree. As I mentioned before, I completed a 2 year residency at St. Clare’s in Schenectady before joining their staff, prior to opening my practice here in East Greenbush. It’s hard to believe we have been here for 18 years but I can honestly say I have the best patients. One of the highlights of being here for this amount of time, is that I have watched handfuls of my own patients choose both careers in dentistry and the program at HVCC for a career in Dental Hygiene. We are certainly fortunate to have such a program right in our own backyard. If you’re not familiar with it, check it out online. As always, ask your questions and communicate with your dental team. We want your smile to last a lifetime!

Paw Lickin’ (not so) Good
We might think our pups are being extra clean and tidy with that attentive paw licking, but excessive licking potentially indicates an underlying health problem. When a dog excessively licks its paws, it may mean it has an allergy. There are three typical reasons for the excessive paw licking: Atopy (a hay fever-like condition), food allergies or flea allergy dermatitis. Dogs often lick paws that hurt, are itchy or uncomfortable. The excessive licking can aggravate the skin and compound into more trouble. It can lead to a secondary bacterial or yeast infection, and that infection can exacerbate the itchy condition. The infections can look like pimples, or a rash. Just as some people have severe allergic reactions, so can dogs. In addition to itchiness, you might see swelling on your dog’s face or body, hives or excessive tears. Your dog’s skin might look red and feel hot to the touch, or your dog might be restless and agitated. In extreme reaction cases, dogs may collapse and have trouble breathing or go into shock. Knowing exactly what caused the allergic reaction can prove to be difficult. It could be a reaction to medication, household cleaning products, bee stings, or something as common as pollen or mold. It could be anything in your house or outside. If you suspect a problem, your veterinarian will need to examine your dog and may want to perform some tests to help make a diagnosis. Some of these tests may include tape preparation cytology (an analysis using a strip of tape), a culture or biopsy. Other tests may include skin and blood testing. Once a diagnosis is made, your veterinarian may put your dog on a treatment of antifungals, antibiotics, prescription shampooing, topical sprays, antihistamines or other medications. If food allergies are suspected, your veterinarian will guide you in the food trial process to eliminate and introduce foods in an attempt to find the allergen culprit. While most dogs do try to maintain a cleanliness, any excessive behavior may be a flag for trouble, and when in doubt, ask your veterinarian. —Dr. Catherine Ruggiero

Pumpkin Latte Anyone? By Daryl Bart
dcbart1@gmail.com
I do not like this pumpkin fad. There! I said it. It’s EVERYWHERE. We’re surrounded. The Pumpkin coffee is obvious. But really? Pumpkin Pringles? Pop tarts? Pasta? Does it have to be so alliterative? I’ve seen pumpkin bagels, pumpkin candles, air freshener, even vodka? Insert eye roll here. Truthfully even the color pumpkin makes me go blech. (but I do look good in fall colors with my coloring) Side note: I’m told mustard and maroon are the colors to watch this season. Also, I don’t like pumpkin pie. OK I might say yes to a pumpkin donut (or 2) but that is really just a cider donut in disguise. As our family tradition goes, we go apple picking and indulge in some yummy warm freshies in the car...but I wouldn’t admit it to anyone but the passengers in the car who actually witnessed it first hand. Because if the bag is empty, were there really any donuts in there in the first place? I definitely like the smell of places that bake & sell pumpkin flavored things, but I’m sure that is just cinnamon and vanilla that really draws me in. I do LOVE one pumpkin treat. It’s these pumpkin bars that my husband bakes & they are ah-mazing, but alas he only makes these once a year for someone in our office on their birthday. I do pretend I like the FAD to not give myself away. I share pumpkin content on my facebook page, like for a seasonal shakeology recipes, and other random pumpkin factoids. Oh wait - I like pumpkin crafts. I once made a totally awesome pumpkin centerpiece disguised as a black cat for my daughter's kindergarten class. I stuck olives, tomatoes, pineapple chunks and carrots all over it with toothpicks so the kids could eat them at their Halloween party. I was pretty Martha Stewart impressed with myself. In that case the pumpkin was like a prop or garnish and it didn't last the day, and no one ate it for sure. COme to think of it, I also LOVE pumpkin seeds. I used to make them after pumpkin carving but in addition to not liking pumpkin flavor, I REALLY don't like feeling around the inside of a real live slimy pumpkin. In the spirit of growth, I’ve decided to embrace it and try and get into the pumpkin spirit for Halloween. For my costume I will be the “New Spice Girl”. If you recall that millennial ensemble, Scary, Baby, Sporty Spice. Remember? Well now there is a new one: “Pumpkin Spice” She dresses in yoga pants, a cool hoodie, uggs & an infinity scarf while rocking a killer blowout, big sunglasses and holding a fancy coffee (purportedly a pumpkin spice latte) I’m pretty sure that with a little effort & preparation, I could totally rock this character. I’ll be practicing all month, perfecting my costume. So I hope the weather cooperates. I might have to improvise a bit. I’ve worked out a little side deal with my local Barista who is willing to write “Pumpkin Spice” on the side of the cup in place of my name and even call it out to the room to perpetuate my ruse….with a wink & all the while pouring me my basic dark roast. Shhhh, don’t tell!!! As I write this I realize that maybe I am a little pumpkin obsessed. What a contradiction. Hmmmm...maybe I’ll just go apple picking. In costume.
