As you welcome fall, be sure to visit the family farm stand and pick from the largest locally grown pumpkin selection. Mums galore, corn stalks, gourds, Indian corn, maple syrup, jelly, corn wreaths & even Indian corn wreaths. With over 25 varieties of pumpkin colors, you will find what you need for this fall season! Like people, pumpkins are unique and diverse. Add color and texture to your fall decor' with the various colors, shapes and textures. Grown for you by Chris & Kevin, they can tell you the type of pumpkin you are buying. This year they have added the perfect photo opportunity for your family! Take your picture with the great big 450lb pumpkin.

Chris & Kevin Webb proudly call their 450 acres of family farmland Webbs Gold Krest Farms. Since 1930, the Webb’s Family Farm has been a dedicated family run farm that produces corn, squash, melons, tomatoes, strawberries, pumpkins, cucumbers, cabbage, beans, raspberries, corn stalks, straw… and much more. Looking for seasoned firewood? Look no further. The fruits, and vegetables, of their labor are ONLY sold at their store located at 3447 River Road (9J) in East Greenbush, and at large retail stores. Every day is a "farmer's market" at Gold Krest Family Farm. They have been here since 1930 and are extremely thankful for all of their customers that support their family farm, their life and passion. The Webb family works long hours, 7 days a week, all year long. You can tell a true farmer by their hands. When Chris Webb and I speak about his farm; you can see the pride & exhaustion on his face. His hands are proof that he farms the land that his father devoted his life to. Chris started working with his Dad at only 16, and has never strayed from his career as a farmer. Chris recently said that he is "addicted to farming." Lucky for us! His son Kevin is following in his father’s footsteps. The Gold Krest Family Farm is a true family business, which relies on dedicated and hard working employees and often extended family members to be successful. From planting the seeds, to picking the product, they bring you produce and plants fresh off their land. It is a true farm to table experience. You can eat fresh corn picked that morning. With all of the health issues & discussions related to Genetically Modified Foods (GMO) these days, it's nice to know that you can actually speak with the farmer that grew your dinner.

What you need to know as the consumer is that you can buy genuine Webb Farm produce at Webbs Gold Krest Farm stand on 9J. Their produce is also sold at local retail stores such as Hannaford. Right down from Route 9 near Rensselaer, they are conveniently located and appreciate your business. From Route 9, you can also take Hayes Road down to 9J, take a right and find them a few miles down 9J. Finding produce locally grown for your enjoyment is not far, and you can help our community by supporting the Gold Krest Family Farm. It is very important that you go out and support our community by shopping local this fall! You may see other farm stands around town with the Webb name, but those products are not harvested by Chris & Kevin Webb on the family farm land. Chris & Kevin look forward to meeting you and thank you for the opportunity to serve the community for many more generations. Call 365-5969 or 465-0437 for your firewood delivery before it gets too cold! LIKE Gold Krest Farm Ent. on Facebook to get updates on fresh produce and products through the year.

Thank you google! I love what I can find out at the touch of my fingers. Google is quite frankly the absolute best thing ever. And my mind works fast and google can keep up with everything I need to know right now, and in no specific order. Today alone was like…. What other movie was that actor in? What’s their net worth? How much does it cost to fly to Barcelona? What day is Easter next year? How much is that new electric Audi they advertised on the Emmy’s? Big Insta Pot or little Insta Pot? What is best vegetable to put in an airfryer? What is the traditional gift for the 20th anniversary? (now you see how we got here….) “Ahhhh Platinum! Woo Hoo!! Now, begin browsing platinum jewelry ideas, then enter a contest for the trip of a lifetime and jump over to facebook, click on a video and BAM - you tube rabbit hole! I literally lost 2 hours of my life.

Joe was busy doing this and that, and at some point suggested we go out for an early dinner. I was mildly annoyed. I didn’t want to leave our cozy apartment, even to eat at one of our favorite spots. (remember the Old Dater Tavern?) I said “fine”, emphasized in that way only a girlfriend can say it, that clearly means “not fine”. In protest of some sort, I put on the same exact clothes from the last night since they were conveniently laid out (on the floor), splashed my face clean and got in the car. It was SO cold out, but the car was nice and toasty warm, the music was hypnotic, and I couldn’t stop myself from dozing off. I woke up when the car turned off and looked around. We weren’t in Clifton Park. We were in the Adirondacks. Wow. That was some nap. We walked into the Inn/Restaurant and were greeted by name and then BAM, I realized - This was it. All I could think was HOLY c%&^! I'm wearing last night’s clothes and I even didn’t take a shower! UGH! We were escorted to a gorgeous room with a fireplace & flowers. And he proposed. Just like that. There was no videographer or hidden iphone. The surprise not captured and posted to Youtube. I still remember it exactly, the twice-worn clothes and the meal. I remember how exciting it was to call people and tell them our news, from the phone, in the lobby, because there was no cell service there.

So there I was, going down the spiral of funny cat antics, babies covered in flour, carpool karaoke clips, and I happened on those all too engrossing “best engagement ever” videos. (don’t do it - you’ve been warned) and began to reminisce about my own engagement story - which I know I’ve told, but it's a good month to tell it again, for old times sake.

We have a wedding video, which I haven’t watched in a while. I need to go find it. But, it’s a lazy Sunday, I’m in my pj’s and the crossword puzzle is waiting and Joe’s busy doing errands. Some things never change, except now I get to google some jewelry too, and while I’m at it, I wonder what it costs to fly to China?

Flashback 1998. I was ready. After 2 years of dating, planning and opening his new dental office, and moving in together, the next step was pretty obvious to me.

Indoor or Outdoor Storage

At a family dinner, Joe’s sister accidentally congratulated me even though I was not yet “in the loop”. As it turns out, Joe told his dad of his intentions, who always complained that he was the last to know everything. Now we know why. Grandpa went and told the sisters before all the necessary parties were suitably informed.

Winter and Summer

Anyway, now I was officially on Hyper Alert, waiting for the big ask. Over the next few weeks, every nuance of every statement, action or activity made me think “THIS IS IT”, which only made me nuts. One Sunday morning in February, after a particularly annoying night that, once again, DIDN’T end in engagement, I was sitting on the couch, doing the crossword puzzle, thinking about a warm vacation and drinking coffee.

Also, the Hannaford- Valatie store, during the month of September, will be donating $1.00 to the Anchor for every cloth bag purchased ( the $4.00 bag). Halloween Candy

Nothing inspires a dental topics like Halloween, with buckets of soon to be sitting in your pantry or on top of the fridge, piles of treats just calling your name. First let me say that we all love candy. Yes, even me (Snickers!) The trouble is, not all candies are created equally. From a dental standpoint, there is no “good candy” (unless you happen to be the 5th dentist in the old Trident commercials…remember 4 out of 5 dentists surveyed…..)

w

Do

The worst candies are those that are sticky or slowly dissolve in the mouth, like caramels and hard candy. Chocolate by itself, while not technically good for the teeth, is not nearly as bad as sticky stuff. Some say that a little dark chocolate is even good for you?? (I’m not sure, but my wife believes that!) With both sticky & hard candy, the issue is prolonged contact with the teeth. The longer a sugary food remains in the mouth, the more potential there is for decay. This is true for any sugary treat, and most food in fact. Any food remaining in the mouth, getting caught between teeth & not being removed by saliva, brushing or flossing, is essentially food for the bacteria that creates the decay in your teeth. While a single piece of candy or several over the days after Halloween, will not likely cause cavities. It’s the everyday habits that really gets your mouth into trouble: Unsupervised snacking, secret concession stand visits & daily treats. Additionally, sucking on mints & hard candies because of dry mouth or low saliva can also increase the risk for decay. And it can happen fast! I have some patients that for different reasons, have new cavities forming between every single dental visit. So enjoy the Halloween Candy, stay away from the sticky stuff, make sure you brush & floss and keep the habits up all year round. As always, if you have questions, ask – because we can’t help you if we don’t know about it.

October 2018 Dear Our Towne Readers, October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. I can’t think of a better way to use my space than to tell you how you can help yourself, and loved ones when it comes to this topic. Not that I am any expert; but have done some research for you... When speaking to a dear friend who has a family history of Breast Cancer, the statement of “It’s not a matter of IF I will get IT. The question really is WHEN will I get it?” It is a tough reality for any woman to face. What has become more common is the person who finds themselves battling this dreadful disease without having a family history. NOT having a previous family history is NOT a reason to avoid a mammogram. Screening, education, research, treatment and support saves lives. Getting a mammogram is uncomfortable and a much dreaded medical procedure. Yet, we NEED to just do it. Every test is compared to the last and offers us information on our breast health. Avoiding this information just increases our chance of loosing any battle that would come our way. Do not skip your mammogram because of a lack of money or health insurance! If you don’t have insurance, look for a free or low-cost mammogram at a facility that has special rates during the month of October. There are breast-screening “deals” during the week of National Mammography Day or any day of October. Planned Parenthood Clinics are one option that offer low or no cost Mammograms. There are also local & national support organizations that can lead you to knowledge, support and opportunities to meet with medical professionals. Several national cancer support organizations offer financial assistance for mammograms or even offer access to free mammograms. If Medicare does not yet cover you, if you’re low income, or you’re uninsured, check with these organizations for help. The mission of The Susan G. Komen foundation is to save lives by ensuring that all people receive the care they need, and finding breakthroughs to prevent and cure breast cancer. Since they began in 1982, there has been a 39% reduction in deaths from Breast Cancer. Susan G. Komen, formerly known as Susan G. Komen for the Cure and originally as The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, often referred to as simply Komen, is the largest and best-funded breast cancer organization in the United States. More than 3 million survivors are supported by donations that provide research & community programs that educate both women and men on the importance of mammograms. For breast health or breast cancer information, please call the Breast Care Help line: 1-877 GO KOMEN (1-877- 465- 6636) or visit the website: helpline@komen.org. The primary website is: https://ww5.komen.org/ For clinical trial information, please call the Clinical Trial Information Helpline: 1-877 GO KOMEN (1-877- 465- 6636) or visit the website: clinicaltrialinfo@komen.org Susan G. Komen Foundation Affiliates are: The American Cancer Society, The Breast Cancer Network of Strength and the American Breast Cancer Foundation I thank you for reading Our Towne Magazine. You can see the content of this magazine on FACEBOOK when you LIKE the Our Towne Magazine Rensco page. Please let the small businesses in the magazine know you saw their ad in Our Towne! Operation Christmas Child Spreading JOY around the world

Contact Dave today to see how he can help you and your business.

Volunteering with Samaritan’s Purse through Operation Christmas Child allows you to directly make a difference in a poor child's life around the world. This program delivers shoe boxes filled with small items to 150 countries around the world. Every gift-filled shoebox is a powerful tool for evangelism and discipleship—transforming the lives of children and their families. Right here in Our Towne many volunteers fill shoe boxes for Operation Christmas Child. Churches, girl scout troops, businesses, school groups take part in this exciting program. Local businesses such as the staff at Pondview Pediatrics, Drumm Vet Clinic, YMCA swim club, many churches and organizations have filled thousands of boxes. The boxes go to over 90 different countries to children suffering from war, famine disease, natural disaster and poverty.

www.accountingdave.com

Each gift (box) is a tangible expression to a hurting child that they are loved ad not forgotten. You can even track the boxes and find out when and where they were delivered! Millions of volunteers take part in this program each year; and it is growing rapidly. How do you fill a box? First, select boy or girl and one of the 3 age groups: 2-4,5-9,10-14. Then fill the (shoe or plastic) box with school supplies (use for all age groups), hygiene items and something fun like a stuffed toy, balls, jump ropes, toy cars. There are also boxes available at Hobby Lobby that can be filled, or fill a cardboard shoe box or plastic storage box of that size. For many of these children, the gifts-filled shoebox is the first gift they have ever received. If you or your organization would like to get involved contact Darleen at palberti@nycap.rr.com, subject OCC. You can contact Darleen Albertine for more information, boxes or a presentation. She would love to share stories with you on how these shoe boxes have affected the lives of the children who receive them. You can also visit the website for details: https://www. samaritanspurse.org/ for information. The Clearview Christian & Missionary Alliance Church will be hosting a shoebox packing party on Saturday November 3rd from 9-12. We are located at 275 Schodack Dr. Castleton. Come join the fun of packing a shoebox and hearing stories of children who have received one. Enjoy fellowship with others while sharing a snack. We promise you’ll go home with a smile on your face! To learn more about this event or packing your own shoebox contact Darleen Albertine at 518-732-4152 or palberti@nycap.rr.com (subject:OCC)

Why does my heel hurt? It could be Plantar Fasciitis. Plantar fasciitis is an inflammation of the band of tissue that extends from the heel to the toes. The most common cause of plantar fasciitis relates to faulty structure of the foot, and it can be seen in people who have overly flat feet and also in people that have high-arched feet. Wearing unsupportive footwear on hard surfaces, standing or walking for long hours, or general overuse may also contribute to plantar fasciitis. Our doctors offer several conservative treatment options including supportive tapings, braces and orthotics. In a great majority of our patients we can often resolve this painful issue without the use of injections or the need for surgery. In the rare cases where conservative treatment fails, we have a fullservice practice that offers surgical options as well. It is important to be evaluated, because there are several other potential causes of heel pain. Our doctors are able to distinguish between all the possibilities and to determine the best treatment plan which we customize for you!

Parents Night Out

The kids are back in school, the days are getting shorter and the leaves are starting to fall! It seems we are all so busy and I often wonder where the time flies, but I’m enjoying all the spare moments I spend with my family. On September 11, our local Girl Scout Troop 1076, led by Amy Griesemer hosted the Annual Columbia County 9/11 Memorial Ceremony at Volunteer Park in Valatie, which included a flag raising, the Pledge of Allegiance, the National Anthem (trumpet solo performance by Lindsey Moon) and the Girl Scout Pledge. Every time I say the Pledge of Allegiance or hear someone sing the National Anthem, I am reminded of those we’ve lost while serving our country and those we lost on 9/11/01 and 9/11/12. It’s not quite Christmas season yet, but I’m sure some of us have already started to think about the dreaded shopping list. Valatie is hosting the Annual HandMade in America: Artisans Along Main Street event on October 6, from 11-5. This event is a great opportunity to purchase gifts for loved ones, enjoy great foods, and keep dollars in our local community. Kid Kurt Blues Band will perform live along Main Street and dozens of local and regional artisans will display their goods for sale, including ceramics, artisanal beverages, textiles, and hand-crafted jewelry. Do you know where your property lines are?

Protect your investment with a survey!

By: Allen W. Zieker, M.D. Board-Certified Ophthalmologist & Director of Cataract Surgery at Ophthalmic Consultants of the Capital Region

Q. I need cataract surgery, but I don’t understand all my

choices for IOLs. Can you please explain?

A. Sure, there is a lot of information to know when deciding

which IOL is best for you. Be sure to find a cataract surgeon who is experienced in implanting all types of IOLs.

Monofocal Lenses A monofocal intraocular lens (IOL) implant is good for distance vision, for example, when you’re driving. However, it does not correct inter-mediate or arm’s length vision for doing things like seeing the golf ball on the tee, or viewing a computer screen clearly. Furthermore, a monofocal lens implant does not correct near vision for doing things up close such as reading. For these reasons, most patients deciding to have monofocal lens implants will be dependent on glasses most of the time. There is usually no extra out-of-pocket cost with a monofocal lens.

Accommodating Lenses FDA approved accommodating lens-es can shift from near to far vision in response to movements of the muscles in your eye similar to the natural lens in a younger eye. These lenses offer excellent distance and middle vision, but they aren’t as reliable for near vision. About 50 percent of patients who have accommodating lenses implanted still need reading glasses. Medicare/insurance usually does NOT cover the cost of an accommodating lens. Multifocal Lenses Multifocal lenses have different areas designed for distance, inter-mediate, and near vision. The brain and eye figure out which part of the lens to use. The main drawback for some patients is multifocal lenses may distort bright light at night, creating more glare and halos. Typical-ly, multifocal lens implants result in the least dependency on eyeglasses. Medicare/insurance does NOT cover the cost of a multifocal lens. Toric Lenses These specialized lenses are de-signed for people with astigmatism. Toric lenses correct your astigmatism, so you may not need distance glasses after surgery. Recently, I was chosen to be the first cataract surgeon in the United States to implant the new Bausch + Lomb enVista® toric MX60T intraocular lens.

October 2018 ELIK (Enriching Life and Increasing Knowledge) Adult programs at the North Chatham Library Wed. October 10th from 10am to Noon: There’s a Lot to See and Do in Columbia County! Hear from staff at Art Omi, the Firemans Museum and Martin Van Buren National Historic Site. Learn about three local, very different, and interesting places all ages will enjoy visiting right here in Columbia County. Tues. October 30th from 10am to Noon: Declutter and Get Organized with Theresa Mayhew, Resource Educator, Cornell Cooperative Extension of Columbia & Greene Counties. Many of us have come to regard home organization as a yearlong challenge – not just a New Year’s resolution. Sometimes it takes a life event like illness, downsizing, separation or divorce to motivate us to take action. For others, procrastination gets in the way. Dealing with a lifetime accumulation of paper and oodles of possessions can be daunting but you can learn how to gain control of the stuff in your home. The English Oxford Dictionary has defined clutter as “a collection of things lying about in an untidy state.” Attendees will learn their clutter personality type and ways to deal with it. The program will cover overcoming obstacles, advance preparation, storage options and paper overload. It will also look at how to deal with financial records, general papers, clothing, specific rooms in the home (think kitchen), keepsakes and collections. Find ways to let the clutter go. Information on where to sell or donate your no longer needed, wanted or used items will also be shared. Reclaim your living space and recharge your life! These programs are FREE. Registration required. The library is located at 4287 Route 203 in the hamlet of North Chatham, NY. Please call the library at 518-766-3211, email at nclibrary@ fairpoint.net or just stop by and sign up. These programs are funded, in part, by a grant from the Fund for Columbia County of the Berkshire Taconic Foundation. We are grateful for the support that makes our programs possible. RENSSELAER HIGH ALUMNI TO MEET The Rensselaer High Alumni will meet in the LGI room of the high school on Oct. 2nd at 6:30pm. All past Alumni and St. Johns Alumni are welcome to attend our meetings and join the Alumni. We wish to thank everyone who participated in our 2nd annual golf tournament on September 9th. It was a big success and we look forward to next year.

Most departments open @ 8:30, with the “White Elephant” department opening @ 10:00 and the auctioneer kicking off @ 11:00 to sell furniture and other large items. Our featured items under the auction tent will be a 2005 Ford Taurus (167,000 miles) and a 1917 Victrola record player with 50+ records. We also have a clothing barn, book tent, and separate areas for Holiday items, linens and dry goods, electrical items, sporting goods & toys, and a make-an-offer area. There is a great variety of merchandise for sale at very reasonable prices, with some really nice antiques and one-of-a-kind items no matter where you look. Of course, what would be a day in the country without food? There will be lots of that available! New this year will be a “Kid Zone”, where young folks can enjoy our swing set and play in a safe area. There is lots of FREE off-street parking behind the church. Our website is northchathammethodistchurch.org. There will be pictures of the Victrola, the car, and other items on the website as they become available. We hope to see you in North Chatham on October 13th!

THE BIG DEAL WITH VACCINES Vaccines aren’t a big deal, right? Wrong! Vaccines have made a difference reducing epidemics, but some myths and concerns prevail. Vaccines are optional. False. New York requires all cats and dogs (and domesticated ferrets) have an up-to-date rabies vaccination. The first vaccine is administered by the time the pet is four months old. A year later, it receives a booster vaccine. After that vaccine, it’s usually given once every three years. There’s no difference between buying vaccines from a pet-supply store and the ones from a veterinarian office. This is myth. There is a big difference between vaccines purchased at pet supply stores and those administered at a veterinary office. When vaccines are purchase over the counter, no further support is provided. If your pet has a bad reaction to the vaccine, you are left handling that reaction alone. When you have your pet vaccinated at a veterinary clinic, you also get vaccination assurance. Most pharmaceutical companies stand by their vaccines administered at a veterinary clinic and may provide help if there’s a poor reaction. Pet owners should make sure the vaccines administered by vaccine clinics are kept refrigerated and handled properly. Vaccines can vary too in their efficacy and safety. A recombinant DNA vaccine is made from a protein from the virus or bacteria, not the entire virus or bacteria ground up into the vaccine. They are more expensive but safer and often more effective at preventing disease. Our veterinarians evaluate the vaccines and chose them based on efficacy and safety, not price. I don’t want to over-vaccinate my pet. Veterinarians are aware of the balance between protecting pets and too many vaccines. However, sometimes disease risk outweighs other concerns. For example, core vaccines are almost always recommended because of risk and severity. Rabies, canine distemper, parvovirus and canine hepatitis are core vaccinations for dogs because they are contagious and potentially fatal. In our area, Lyme is also considered a core vaccine. Non-core vaccines are those which your pet may or may not need, depending on risk factors. Always discuss with your veterinarian what, if any, non-core vaccines your pet may need. It’s too expensive to get my pet vaccinated. It’s a gamble where the price may be your pet’s life. According to the American Animal Hospital Association, if a wild animal scratches or bites an unvaccinated dog or cat, that pet is almost always quarantined for six months or euthanized. Why is an examination needed if my pet only needs vaccinations? Vaccinations are important, and veterinarians don’t administer them lightly. By nature of its purpose, vaccines can stress the pet’s immune system as it builds protecting antibodies. If the pet is already sick or its immune system is compromised, a vaccine can do more harm than good. The only way to make a sound judgment is for the veterinarian to assess the pet’s health with an examination. I started my puppy with its vaccination series, but I never got the boosters. Is it true that my puppy must start the series over again? Unfortunately, it’s true. The timeline for boosters is important to helping your dog or cat build immunities. If there’s a gap, the immune system will not build adequate protection and additional boosters won’t help. If you have any questions about vaccines and your pet, drop by our office. Our veterinarians will be happy to discuss the best options for you and your pet. Dr. Lisa Dietrich
