The Our Towne Spotlight Shines on... Fred’s Discount Tire & Auto Who's your guy? When you need new tires, brakes, alignment, oil change, battery check... who do you trust? Fred's Discount Tire & Auto is celebrating their 5th anniversary this November. They have now opened a second location at 790 Burden Ave in Troy (in the Speedway parking lot). Fred wants to give a huge THANK YOU to all of his customers that have supported him! The new location is also red, white & blue to honor our great country and those who serve and protect us; Veterans, military, first responders…and the everyday, hard worker who is just looking to live their best life! Fred even offers a 10% off regular price for Seniors, Veterans & Emergency Personnel Service workers. This family owned & operated full-service auto repair and tire center wants to know you, and for you to know them. You can be confident in the ASE Certified Technicians, quality parts and most current diagnostic technology. They sell new and pre-owned brand name tires for everyone's budget. With over 2,000 used tires in stock starting at $25, you can afford to get safe tires on your vehicles at Fred's Discount Tire & Auto.
Fred Sliney wants you to know that he offers you over 30 years of experience, 8 years of education and an old school work ethic. A man who is very straight forward and speaks from the heart, Fred tells me point blank that they are "in business to serve the people. We are here to develop long term, honest relationships with the community and greatly appreciate them supporting a small family owned & operated local business.” He wants everyday working people to have affordable auto care from a trustworthy, local source. If this sounds good to you, make FRED YOUR GUY!
Both locations of Fred's Discount Tire & Auto will be open 6 days a week to accommodate the busy snow tire season; Monday-Friday 8-5:30 & Saturday 8-3. They want to make it easier for you to get your car repaired by offering a free convenient shuttle. Drop off the car in the morning and they will bring you to work, home, school or wherever you need to go while they work on your vehicle. In the Spring, Sweet B’s Ice Cream & Eatery will be opening next to the new shop in Troy. Stay tuned for details! Now is the time to get your snow tires or have your tires studded for the winter. THEY WILL BEAT ANY TIRE PRICE (from a written ad). Guaranteed service on foreign & domestic cars, trucks, SUV and fleet vehicles. Fred’s Discount Tire & Auto is the only approved business in Rensselaer to install Driver Impaired Smart Start Interlock System in cars for those with a DWI offense (available in the Rensselaer & Troy locations). Please call 518-433-7205 (Rensselaer) or 518-326-2065 (Troy) to make an appointment today and be sure to make FRED YOUR GUY.

Fred’s story is like many other business owners; filled with relentless drive for success, passion and commitment to growth. Raised in South Boston by a strict Father, who "Didn't ask. He demanded." Dad was a 30-year Veteran, he was not raising any kid without the highest work ethic and drive for success. Dad didn't have the funds to send Fred to college, but Cape Cod Tech was a local 4-year trade school where Fred learned how to be a mechanic. He was a star pupil and even after he left to work at Sullivan Tires, a large local chain of auto & tire centers, he was often called back to the school to help problem solve mechanical issues. Sullivan Tire sent him to the local community college where he took Sociology classes. At 22 years old, Fred was the youngest store manager at any Goodyear Independent Service Center. He continued to work for “Corporate America” for many, many years before he was ready to put his name on the sign and open his own shop. Fred is now focused on passing his work ethic and pride of workmanship to his son Joseph, 23, who will be the Operations Manager at the new Troy location, conveniently located just a quarter mile down the hill from HVCC.

at the North Chatham United Methodist Church 4274 Route 203 North Chatham, NY Do you like garage sales? Have you ever experienced an old-fashioned auction, where the auctioneer’s sing-song makes you want to raise your hand and get in on the bidding? If so, come on out to North Chatham on Saturday, October 19th, where the North Chatham United Methodist Church will be holding their annual Lord’s Acre Auction and Sale. This will most likely be the biggest garage sale you’ve ever seen, so if we don’t have it you probably don’t need it! Most departments open @ 8:30, with the “White Elephant” department opening @ 10:00 and the auctioneer kicking off @ 11:00 to sell furniture and other large items. We have some very nice antique furniture, a queen-sized adjustable bed frame, and 2 good quality patio sets (one redwood, one metal). We also have a clothing barn, book tent, and separate areas for Holiday items, linens and dry goods, electrical items, sporting goods & toys, and a make-an-offer area. There is a great variety of merchandise for sale at very reasonable prices, with some really nice antiques and one-of-a-kind items no matter where you look. Of course, what would be a day in the country without food? There will be lots of that available! There is FREE off-street parking behind the church. This will be the final year for the Auction, so we hope you will come and help us go out with a bang! There will be pictures of the items described above, and other items, on our website (northchathammethodistchurch.org) as they become available. We hope to see you in North Chatham on October 19th!

Dear Our Towne Readers, Autumn is upon us! Every weekend around Our Towne is filled with lots of fun events in the community and with our advertisers. As you flip through this issue, grab your calendar and make some plans to enjoy the great outdoors and support local business. Apple Picking, Pumpkins, Hay Rides, Corn Mazes, Cider, Donuts...And of course Halloween. Windy Hill Orchard will host their 1st Annual Apple Festival October 5th & 6th. Their Apple Festival will be a whole new experience! Much less expensive-lots of family fun activities included in the (lower) admission price. I urge you to stop by and enjoy the orchard and see all of the improvements that The Seeberger family are so very proud of. It will be a whole new experience that won’t break the bank. I realize that the “Holiday Season” seems far away, but local food pantries and organizations that make Christmas special for local kids are already planning. Part of that planning includes worrying that there won’t be enough resources to meet the growing need in the community. I volunteer at The Anchor, in Castleton, that serve the less fortunate in The Town of Schodack. All of the surrounding towns also have similar organizations that offer food, health & home items that are donated by members of the community. I urge you to reach out to your local organizations and make a donation now; so they can plan for the holiday season. I am happy to publish notices for these organizations for free; to spread the word about what is needed. Below you will find a plea from The Anchor looking for monetary donations (or food items). Please consider helping out the less fortunate in your community. Thank you for reading Our Towne Magazine. As a independent, small business owner I can assure you we appreciate your support.
Jennifer Felts
Dear Neighbors: The Anchor food pantry has been serving our community for over 40 years. The need in just this area, Castleton/Schodack, has increased tremendously over the past few years. *January through August 2019, we served over 363 families equating to 973 people. *Calendar year 2018: 527 families were fed equating to 1,292 people. *Thanksgiving dinners in 2018: A total of 59 families received turkey dinners with all the fixings Including homemade Apple Pies purchased from the local Girl Scout troops. *Christmas dinners in 2018 – A total of 63 families received turkey dinners with everything for the meal, including dessert. *Easter dinners in 2018 – A total of 65 families were given Hams with all the fixings. Note: These holiday meals are in addition to the regular monthly food allotments which total Approximately 20 meals per month. As we all can attest, food costs rise monthly and this is the nature of this letter. We are asking for your help this holiday season. If you can donate even a small amount; we would appreciate it. Many in our community think that the food is donated; this is not always the case. We have to purchase all our food through the Regional Food Bank. Our monthly food costs continue to rise, so we are asking for your consideration of a monetary donation to help us in feeding the less fortunate. Any amount will go a long way in helping us achieve this goal. Please make checks payable to The Anchor Food Pantry and mail to P. O. Box 92, Castleton, N.Y. 12033. Thank you in advance for your contribution. Sincerely, Paula Sancomb, Anchor Manager 518-732-4120

Finding Your Passion By Dr. Patrick Bergmann
As a Clinical Doctor of Audiology for the past 15 years I have had the privilege to help hundreds of individuals with hearing loss. My experience in both private practice diagnosing hearing loss and dispensing hearing aids and my work with the New York State Police Academy for 15 years has given me an appreciation for how I found my true calling to be an Audiologist. My path to become a Doctor of Audiology and find my true passion was not your typical route. I’d been working in TV for several years with ShowTime & Walt Disney, but never had satisfaction in my work. I always had the feeling I wanted to make a difference and help people but didn’t know what I wanted. On a whim, I signed up to take a Career Focusing Class, hoping it would help me figure out what I wanted to do. After completing the 6-week class I was presented an envelope with 3 careers I was told matched my personality and desires. As I opened the envelope and glanced down at the sheet listing my dream jobs it read a Priest, a Rabbi or an Audiologist. I thought to myself Oh My God, this sounds like a joke! I immediately knew some things wouldn’t work for me. I’m married so a Priest is out, I’m not Jewish so that’s out and what is an Audiologist? As I researched into my only real possibility, an Audiologist, I realized this might be something for me. I’d be helping people who were hard of hearing. I took a class in Audiology and I was hooked! I quit my job, returned to school for 8 years, and got my degree in Audiology and I have never looked back. As I like to tell people, the day I started in Audiology was the day I found my passion and stopped working. I’ve never had a day I felt dread or didn’t want to show up to the office. The point of my story is that unless we try something new things will never change and we will never discover new joys in life. It’s easy to get stuck in our daily routine and keep doing what we know. Change can be scary. It doesn’t have to be as dramatic as a career but try something simple, a new type of food, or say hello to someone you frequently see at the gym. Nelson Mandela said it best "There is no passion to be found in settling for a life that is less than the one you are capable of living." So try something new today you may discover your passion or a new interest by making a small change.

Grease a baking dish. Mix cracker crumbs, freshly ground pepper, sea salt, and garlic powder in a shallow bowl. Dip chicken breasts into melted margarine and press into cracker mixture until coated. Arrange chicken in prepared baking dish. Bake in preheated oven until chicken breasts are no longer pink in the center and the juices run clear, 45 to 60 minutes. Dear husband telling his wife “I want to kill you, you are useless, etc.”, in front of your daughter nonetheless. I know you. I was married to you for 20+ years. You may not be the same person, but your character speaks volumes, just as my husband’s did. Yes, the two of you were struggling to load the bikes on your car. You took your impatience out on your family. By your tone and your wife’s demeanor, it clearly was not the first time. I hope you had a great day with your family. However, unbeknownst to you, you erased any happy memory of today for both your wife and daughter. After all, the last thing your family experienced today was your anger. Dear wife standing in shame while her husband belittles her - as you slide into your place in the car, I couldn’t help but feel your pain. I know that look on your face. You feel you have no worth, that his words are accurate. Not only does your husband feel you have no usefulness but, over time, your daughter will feel the same way. I wish I had the courage to speak to you, but I did not. All I could do was cry for you. Honestly, for all of you. To the husband who thinks he is entitled to belittle his wife, the woman you most likely vowed to love, honor and cherish – she secretly hates you (and, sadly, feels guilty about her feelings). And, as you chastise your wife, you are also teaching your daughter that her selfworth is not her own but based on the judgement of the men in her life. To the wife of this man – you most likely vowed to love, honor and cherish him as well. Let me tell you, there is a limit. You are most likely a great mother, an amazing friend and a good wife. It’s not your fault. He is a bully. Bullies are not just children, they can be adults to. I would like to offer some guidance. Over the past 20+ years I’ve begged my husband to not degrade and belittle me, especially in front of our children; to treat me with respect, as I did him. After all, what kind of spouses would our children be, raised in a house devoid of decency? Personally, I had to give up and move on. I have not been happier in years. I have found myself. I honestly wish the same for you. I wish you a life of happiness and fulfillment. Sometimes this just isn’t with a partner who can’t see the good in you and sometimes it’s alone. And that’s okay.

Hearing is made possible by the outer ear, middle ear, and inner ear all working together. The outer ear is the physical ear itself and the ear canal. The middle ear is separated from the outer ear by the eardrum, and consists of the three middle ear bones. Outer and middle ear issues may cause temporary or permanent hearing loss depending on what structures are being affected. Oftentimes, issues with the outeror middle ear are medically correctable and do not require a person to wear hearing aids. The final part of the ear, the inner ear, contains the cochlea and auditory nerve. Damage to the inner ear is the most common diagnosis for people with hearing aids. Hearing loss in the inner ear, called sensorineural hearing loss, presents in a couple of different ways: damage to the hair cells of the cochlea, or damage to the auditory nerve. The cochlea has thousandsof tiny hair cells throughout it. The hair cells respond to sounds, which creates the sensation of pitch and volume. Over time, the hair cells may become damaged and no longer function properly due to noise exposure, or aging, causing a hearing loss. Hearing loss can also occur from damage to the auditory nerves, such as with multiple sclerosis (MS), Parkinson’s disease, or aging. Hearing loss in the inner ear is typically permanent. There is no cure for sensorineural hearing loss, but it can be treated by wearing hearing aids. Will hearing aids cause a person’s hearing to worsen? The short answer is: No. Hearing aids workby only amplifying pitches where hearing loss is present and not amplifying pitches where hearing is normal. They have programming built in to prevent them from making sounds too loud, so as not to damage a person’s remaining hearing. Wearing hearing aids does not alter the person’s natural hearing, nor does it prevent further hearing loss from happening. Think of it this way: wearing hearing aids will not cause further hearing loss, the same way wearing glasses will not cause eyesight to get worse. Although there is no way to reverse a permanent hearing loss, advances in hearing aid technology have been helping people to cope with their loss. Treating hearing loss with hearing aids helps improve quality of life by making speech and environmental sounds louder and clearer. Although they cannot restore or prevent the loss of hearing, many people still benefit from wearing them. If you asked my kids, they’d laugh if they heard me say I’m a technical guy. I might not snap and instagram, but I’ve come a very, very long way. In college, I never even took a computer course. Back in the 1980’s, I was quite certain I wouldn’t need them to become a dentist. It was a rude awakening when I got to dental school and we installed the first computerized software to our dental clinic. That began a journey for me to let technology help me be a better dentist. These days, I’m on a computer daily and deliver treatment to my patients using so many wonderful advances. Over the last 20 years, we’ve converted our office to a (paper) chartless space. Now, every note, image and detail goes into a computerized clinical record. Being able to find all of the necessary information right at my fingertips makes us more efficient, charts never get mis-filed and insurance claims get paid faster. One of my personal favorite pieces of technology is the digital scanner. Patients like it too. With a scanner, we almost never need to use that gooey impression material to make crowns, bridges, dentures, Invisalign or night guards. We use the scanner to create perfect images for our labwork. So many dental procedures rely on precise measurements and impressions and they go so much more smoothly than ever before, with an excellent outcome. I love our digital scanner.

Only FDA-Approved Trifocal Lens Now
at
Ophthalmic Consultants
of the
Capital Region
Always committed to bringing patients the best and latest technology in the field of eye care, Ophthalmic Consultants of the Capital Region is now among the earliest in the country to offer its cataract patients the first and only FDA-approved trifocal lens. Dr. Allen Zieker implanted the AcrySof® IQ PanOptix® Trifocal Intraocular Lens (IOL) in a cataract patient on Tuesday, September 3, just one week after Alcon announced the FDA approval and its initial U.S. commercial launch of the PanOptix lens. Dr. Zieker, president and director of cataract surgery at Ophthalmic Consultants of the Capital Region, is one of the first in the United States and is the first surgeon in New York and New England to implant the PanOptix lens. “The new AcrySof® IQ PanOptix® Trifocal IOL gives our cataract patients the chance for glasses-free vision after surgery like never before,” Dr. Zieker stated. “This lens offers an outstanding range of vision—near, intermediate, and far—and gives people the vision they need for every facet of their life. We are proud to be among the first in the United States to offer our patients the benefits of a trifocal lens, which has already seen great success worldwide.” Although Alcon’s PanOptix lens is just now entering the U.S. market, PanOptix is already one of the leading presbyopia-correcting IOLs in more than 70 countries and European surgeons have been using trifocal lenses in their patients since 2015 with overwhelming success. Before the introduction of trifocal lenses, cataract patients would have to choose between monofocal lenses—offering sharp focusing power at a single distance, either close up (near vision) or far away (distance vision)—or multifocal lenses, which provide excellent near and distance vision, but do so at the expense of intermediate vision. Intermediate vision refers to eyesight at about an arms-distance away and includes everything from computer work to reading a car speedometer to cooking. The PanOptix Trifocal IOL features a proprietary design, ENLIGHTEN® Optical Technology, which is the first to optimize intermediate vision without compromising near or distance vision. This triple combination of exceptional near, intermediate, and distance vision means that the need for glasses after cataract surgery is significantly reduced. Patients throughout the Capital Region can already begin benefitting from the first trifocal lens available in the U.S. ABOUT OPHTHALMIC CONSULTANTS OF THE CAPITAL REGION: At Ophthalmic Consultants of the Capital Region, we offer a comprehensive model of eye care with experienced specialists, ophthalmologists & optometrists. We have 5 convenient locations in Albany, Clifton Park, Schenectady, Schodack, and Troy. Call 518-777-2777 for an appointment. ABOUT ALLEN ZIEKER, M.D. Dr. Allen Zieker has been in practice as an ophthalmologist and cataract surgeon for more than 33 years. Working with cataract patients is his passion; in fact, Dr. Zieker performs more than 1,500 cataract surgeries annually. During his career, he has completed well over 7,000 laser procedures and several thousand astigmatic surgeries. In 2018, Dr. Allen Zieker was the first cataract surgeon in the United States to implant the enVista® toric MX60T intraocular lens. In 2019, he was one of the first surgeons in upstate New York to implant the Hydrus® Microstent in glaucoma patients during cataract surgery. Dr. Allen Zieker is at the forefront of eye care, seeking out the latest advancements in technology and treatment options. Dr. Allen Zieker was the founder of Troy Eye Associates and a founding member of Albany-Troy Cataract and Laser Associates. Expansion into communities surrounding Albany and Troy led to the renaming of the practice to Ophthalmic Consultants of the Capital Region. The goal of the expansion is to better serve patients from all the areas of the Capital District. Dr. Allen Zieker is the President of the practice and Director of Cataract Surgery.

#AMomCanDream By Daryl Bart
A few years ago, for a number reasons, we bought a house that we currently use as a rental property. In hindsight, it feels as if the whole experience has been to test our ability to adapt when faced with the chaos of a landlord’s responsibilities. Tenants, rent and maintenance. Projects and painting and snow removal. We’ve had tenants that came and went and others that simply wouldn’t go and others that left, but kindly left so many reminders, it took months to shake the memories. Yeah. Not digging the whole landlord thing these days. The other day Nate texts me “Hi Mom, Can I talk to you about something?” Texts like that make my head explode, a spiral semi-panic of tangential thoughts in 9 little words. I have a flair for the dramatic, I know. So instead of freaking out, I simply replied… “Of course”. Our predetermined phone call turned out to be a discussion about an “opportunity to move into an apartment off campus with some fraternity brothers”. My initial response was “Uhmmm, you’ve been in college a total of nine days so far, are you really thinking about NEXT year already?” Well, apparently they were and wow, I needed to sit down for this one. I did some fast finger counting, and realized it was almost 30 years ago, when me and my college friends got together to move off campus. If you’re from the area, you might be familiar with the run down area nestled in between the Albany avenues, known fondly for the student housing, where students could snag a sweet flat, and by sweet, I mean almost condemned, for some overpriced amount that was pure freedom to us. Sections of town where now grown up home owners like me think, who the heck would risk their properties and rent to these kids, letting them trash the properties year after year. Conversely, now as a parent, I wonder, who, in good conscience, could let unsuspecting children rent these hovels. In my day, it cost me and my friends somewhere around $150 a month each to rent an apartment, and we were overpaying. Even as I grew up and my tastes, and wallet, refined to allow me to rent in better areas off Washington Park, my share of the rent never topped $225. So it was a huge shock when I saw a copy of the lease that Nate and his friends were considering. Now, I will pause and let you do some math. 8 boys, 12 months, lots of dollars each. I won’t get super specific, only to say that even when split among 8 boys, the cost to rent this house actually sent me immediately to zillow.com to start looking to buy my own rental property in Nate’s college town, which I quickly realized I can’t afford. Anyway, in the immediate sense, there are decisions to be made. Does he rent an apartment or stay on campus? Does he risk a bad lease, a roommate(s) that doesn’t work out, maybe not finding someone to sublet his room? And does this lead to the inevitable firsts, like Nate’s first summer living in the college apartment, first job away from home, maybe never coming back to the area, ever? It’s not a crazy thought. I grew up somewhere else, and stayed here after college. Joe grew up somewhere else and stayed here after dental school never going back downstate. We play this parental tug of war, letting him grow up and out. Come home. Make smart mature choices. Come home. Make something of yourself. As luck would have it, without having to put the parental foot down and say an emphatic NO WAY to this particular apartment, it fell through before the boys could agree on it. I’m guessing a few of the other parents were also not quite ready for a massive security deposit, fresh off of paying the fall tuition bill. So, as we work to rent our vacant property this month, hoping that we have the apartment gods on our side, crossing fingers that the tenants don’t bring as much drama or cause as much damage as the previous tenants, we can rest easy knowing there is always another way to look at it. Maybe, just maybe, if we’re lucky, Nate and his friends will all move here and need a place to live locally while they chase their careers, and for the right price, I might know of a place they could rent. #AMomCanDream

Do
you have pain in the back of the heel or ankle? this coulD be a sign of an issue with your achilles tenDon.
The Achilles tendon is a band of tissue that connects muscles in the back of the leg to the heel. The Achilles tendon helps you walk by lifting the heel off of the ground. Achilles tendon problems such as Achilles tendonitis, or tendonosis, develop due to sudden increase in repetitive activity which can cause too much stress on the tendon fibers. This can lead to inflammation within the tendon, and the development of microscopic tears. This can happen at the heel bone insertion, or further up the back of the ankle. Chronic degeneration can result in weakening and in some cases complete tears may occur. People most at risk for Achilles tendon injuries include athletes, laborers, “weekend warriors,” as well as people with excessive flattening of the arch. Symptoms of problems with the Achilles include pain within the tendon which is often the worst with the first steps in the morning or after periods of rest. With chronic tendonosis, the area may become enlarged with hard nodules in the area where the tissue is damaged. If you are suffering with this problem, come in for an evaluation with our doctors who can provide treatment options to help ease your pain!
“Relief may be easier than you think.”
