A Message from Our Towne Dear Reader, ‘Always expect the unexpected’, is an old adage that sums up how upstaters may feel after Hurricane Irene. At a recent school assembly for my children we saw photos of homes & cars under water, mangled sidewalks & trees that had fallen on electrical wires. I felt compassion for those who had lost everything, and also tremendous gratitude for people who have offered support by gathering supplies, food and comfort for those in need. The most amazing thing is that its not just big organizations like the American Red Cross and the Salvation Army who have stepped up but many individuals have developed creative ways to help. Like a local teacher who is collecting donations for families in her hometown of Windham, or the girl’s soccer team at Maple Hill who brought supplies to the Greenville team they played in September. For more information on how you can help contact these local organizations: Unity House in Troy, 274-2607 Regional Food Bank, 786-3691 www.Americanredcrossneny.org This month Our Towne features Fall Home Improvements. Look to our local contractors to remove the dead tree in your front yard, get that new roof you have been wanting to put on, have your driveway sealed, or have the barn looked at so you can avoid problems later on in the year. Our Towne is also featuring some of the best Fall Events of the Region. Some highlights include happenings at Goold Orchards and a local visit from the star of TLC’s Cake Boss at The Gristmill Antique Center on Route 7 in Raymertown. Get a jump-start on your holidays with the Antique’s and Gift Shopping Guide, featuring an article by Timothy Bailey or Bailey’s Antique’s in Nassau about the history of Antiques in Rensselaer County. As always, enjoy learning about your local small businesses and non-profit organizations in this issue of Our Towne and let our advertiser know you found them here.

HAPPY HALLOWEEN! Thanks!

Fall Home Improvement Guide By Diane By Diane HOME IMPROVEMENTS: Keeping Up With the Jone’s “Keeping up with the Jones” is a good idea when it comes to Home Improvement especially when it’s time to sell your house. Your goal is to keep improvements on par with your neighbors and nearby homes of similar size and value. Listed below are the top 5 Home Improvements with a return on investment over or very close to 80%: x

Upgrade the Exterior of your home - Vinyl siding replacement gives you a big return on investment with the added bonus of a more energy efficient home when you use foam backed vinyl. Keep the colors neutral, a pale grey or creamy white. It’s a classic look and allows for a plethora of color combinations. Even simple things can bring a high rate of return, like painting the exterior of your home. Since most prospective buyers begin their shopping online, a picture is worth a thousand words. Curb appeal is very important!

x

Kitchen Remodel – Upgrading your kitchen is the top interior home improvement. Lower cost improvements like cabinet resurfacing and replacing old pulls and knobs have the biggest return on investment followed by new countertops in granite, quartz, marble or Corian. New countertops are a big wow so draw the eye of prospective buyers by placing a bowl of bright red apples or red peppers front and center. Nothing says upgrade like new cabinets but if new cabinets are beyond your budget think “cosmetic only” and update by painting your cabinets a fresh white, soft sage or even a luxurious black.

x

New Windows in either vinyl or wood will save you money on heating and cooling bills and have a 79% return on investment. They give your home an instant facelift inside and out. Keep some old heating/cooling bills pre-improvement to show potential buyers the decrease in utility costs.

x

A New Front Door – this home improvement doesn’t cost a lot and the return on investment can be over 100% when you sell your home! A new energy efficient door keeps out the cold, can add a pop of color or the warm inviting look of wood and enhances the curb appeal of your home.

x

Families are spending more time entertaining outdoors and outdoor “rooms” are all the rage. Capitalize on this trend with a new wood deck addition. Average costs are just over $10,000 with a return on investment of 85%. DESIGNSENSEBYDIANE.COM ~ 518-330-3454

Local Antique & Gift Shopping A Little History

7ZR *UHDW 6KRSV LQ 1DVVDX

$QWLTXHV $W %DLOH\V

By Timothy Bailey An que’s at Baileys, Nassau, NY When shopping for an ques, there are many dierent periods to choose from. For instance; when it comes to country furniture, how do country an ques dier from New England an ques and which type seems to be the preference for many locals? Basically, country an ques have heavier propor ons and less painted surfaces when compared to New England an ques. These are generally more formal and refined in detail, quality, and finish. New England an ques may have marble tops, French polish for a high gloss, or even a bellflower inlay. You won’t o en see these details with country an ques. So, how did these dierences develop? Some say the turning point occurred around the me of the American Revolu on. During the late Colonial / Early Federal period (1770’s-1820’s) the Bri sh were o en looked down upon for being ‘gentrified’ aristocrats in need of ‘pre er’ furniture. However, those who were ‘Patriots’ are o en seen as the common man, more the reckless and grimy ‘sots’ in need of bulkier furniture. Even today, descendents of those hearty ‘Patriots’ s ll seem to love their country furniture. Unfortunately, because we are a mixture of New England se lers from Connec cut, Rhode Island, and Massachuse s, most furniture styles from back in the day were a hybrid. However, we can boast of having the one truly original American style of furniture and one of the most important country furniture types the na on has ever known. Beginning in the late 1700’s, the ‘Shakers’ created se lements in the Upper Hudson Valley and Berkshires. Soon a er they established their se lements, they began cra ing simple yet elegant furniture. Plain in style, yet durable and func onal, ‘Shaker’ furniture is truly unique. While the Shaker movement is now just a page in the history books, their furniture was so well cra ed that original pieces will command top dollar.

Wellness What is a Naturopathic Doctor? By Dr. Amy Cole, ND Naturopathic Doctor amycolend@gmail.com www.amycolend.com (518)701-4587 (518)701-4587 Naturopathic Doctors (NDs) are trained at four-year, post graduate, medical colleges. The first two years of their naturopathic schooling are similar to the conventional medical doctors (MDs or DOs) and consist of basic medical sciences covering anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, microbiology, pathology, pharmacology, immunology, histology, genetics, physical exam, and diagnostic classes. In the final two years of the ND program, students focus on systems-based classes such as, gynecology, neurology, oncology, gastroenterology, etc. The students also focus on the naturopathic therapies including, clinical nutrition, botanical medicine, homeopathy, Chinese medicine, spinal manipulation, hydrotherapy and more. In addition to these complimentary modalities, naturopathic doctors are also trained in pharmacology. An NDs education includes more than 1300 hours of hands on clinical education and working with NDs, MDs, DOs, and Chiropractors.

The philosophies include: Doctor as Teacher: The doctor is there to help to educate the patient about their body.

The Healing Power of Nature: This is the belief that giving the body the nutrients that it needs to function properly and removing any toxins or burdens on the body that may be inhibiting its proper function will allow the body to heal itself.

First do no Harm: Avoid doing anything to the body that may harm it.

Identify and Treat the Cause of Illness: For example if you get headaches all of the time, instead of simply taking pain relievers try to find out what the cause of the headaches are and treat that. Could it be stress, food, muscle tension, etc.?

Treat the whole Person: Even though we learn and talk about the body having different systems that are separate, such as the cardiovascular system and the digestive system, it is important to realize that they all work together to keep us going. Also, all to often in medicine we forget that there is also a mental/spiritual aspect that makes up the whole person as well.

From Missing Them to Rediscovering You: Using the Empty Nest as a Container for Personal Growth

518-286-3500 conveniently located on Route 4 in North Greenbush

by Jae Way, Holistic Life Coach / Psychosynthesis Practitioner Right now many parents are dealing with the many firsts after their youngest chicks have left the nest and moved to a distant college, job or their own home. Meanwhile, your home atmosphere feels wrong. Too quiet. You are actually missing the endless phone calls reporting that teenaged plans have changed again. You may be feeling lost, drained of energy, unusually sad, and weepy. This is Empty Nest Syndrome. A type of depression that can be debilitating, ENS affects mothers three times more often than fathers. Columbus Day weekend offers Empty Nesters the first chance for a short homecoming. Many look forward to this visit with hopes for a meaningful reunion and brief return to normal life. Moms may imagine lots of togetherness time. Meanwhile, the young adults often imagine spending some time with parents, having a home cooked meal, and much running around to reconnect with old friends. The weekend flies, and soon you are sharing farewell hugs and waving goodbye as your chick heads back to their own life’s routine. Closing the door, the nest may feel even emptier than before. So now what? Start counting the days to Thanksgiving? Okay. But during that countdown, why not spend at least one hour of each of those days rediscovering you. With less time and energy spent on active parenting, you have more of it for you. IF you are open to the possibilities. Try to remember before you were Mom. What were your hopes and dreams? Although the Mom part of you looms large now, younger selves still live within you. The little girl who wanted to be a veterinarian. The teenager who imagined being an artist. The twenty-something who dreamed of traveling. The thirty-something that toyed with going back to school. Now it’s your time. Open to new possibilities. Use the space of the Empty Nest as a place for you to grow and reinvent yourself, a place where you can hatch your own dreams.

From the Desk Of Rick McCabe The long awaited construction of the Couse Corners roundabout began this July with great hopes of completion by the fall. Our town people worked diligently with consultants and the Department of Transportation(DOT) to assure a smooth transition from the existing roadway layout to the new roundabout. We have just concluded meeting with National Grid, Verizon, DOT and the contractor to review the schedule and progress to date. Unfortunately, due to Verizon’s labor strike, hurricane Irene, and generally poor weather conditions the past month, the utilities have been required to divert their work forced to people throughout the northeast who are in dire need of services and have no power or phone service. These delays by Verizon and National Grid have pushed the completion date to a point that we will incur cold weather and freezing temperatures, preventing the placement of blacktop on the roundabout. We have come to a mutual decision that it is best for the project to placed on hold until April of 2012 whereby the new completion date will be June 1, 2012. Work on the project will continue in to November but the current layout of the intersection will remain the same through the winter months. We ask that you all please bear with us as our neighbors are dealing with much more pressing issues than the Town of East Greenbush.

Clinton Heights Fire Swift Water Rescue Team Deployed During Recent Emergencies “The Clinton Heights Volunteer Fire Department [CHFD] has been credited with 64 rescues,” according to District Chief Randy Cherubino. As Hurricane Irene struck, the NYS Emergency Management Office contacted CHFD Sunday, August 28th and requested the

Swift Water Rescue Team be deployed to Greene County. “We were immediately sent to Prattsville where extensive flooding and stranded residents were reported. Upon arrival, the 12 members broke up into four teams and immediately worked their way into the raging waters that was once Main Street. Safety Officer Ron Stark reported that “Homes were flooded into the first floors; others were just washed away. A local trailer park with 18 mobile homes now had only two, one of which was on fire. “Ten or so trailers were stacked up against a tree line like legos,” observed Lieutenant Tom Penk. Captain Chris Racine’s team came upon two houses that were being compromised. “Parents were throwing their children out a second story window to us. We found a 93 year old who was confined to a wheelchair; we got her into a shuttle boat to safety.” Then Stark, along with Racine and Lieutenant Tony Hazzard found a woman trapped

Yet soon a er Ann Eliza’s story begins, a second exquisite narra ve unfolds...a tale of murder involving a polygamist family in presentday Utah. Jordan Sco , a young man who was thrown out of his fundamentalist sect years earlier, must reenter the world that cast him aside in order to discover the truth behind his father’s death. And as Ann Eliza’s narra ve intertwines with that of Jordan’s search, readers are pulled deeper into the mysteries of love, family, and faith. Rensselaer Chamber of Commerce Chamber Unveils Exclusive & Innovative Health Insurance Benefit for Members

The Rensselaer County Regional Chamber of Commerce is set to unveil a brand new health insurance program designed to maximize plan options, increase the cost-effectiveness of coverage, and give participants the power of choice in crafting their companies’ benefit strategies. The program, available for enrollment in November, is exclusive to members of our Chamber and represents an innovative model of coverage in response to the needs of our membership. “This is the next-generation of health insurance models, and our members are first in line,” said Chamber President Linda Hillman. “We’ve taken a proactive role in providing an answer to one of the greatest challenges facing businesses and non-profit organizations today: managing the costs Linda Hillman, Chamber President and administrative burden of health insurance. Our members and their employees can now access a practical, affordable, and effective program with the broadest spectrum of choices available.” The new benefit, offered through CDPHP and administered by Bouchey & Clarke Benefits, Inc., provides members with access to a wide selection of insurance plans, personalized benefits guidance to assist with enrollment and existing care transitions, and low-cost options for employers and participants without reducing coverage. The single carrier program will offer seven plans to choose from, with a wide spectrum of price points ranging from a predictable HMO plan all the way to a flexible low-cost option. Coverage details, rates, and comparisons will be available in November during open enrollment, pending New York State Insurance Department approval. Enrollments in November will take effect January 1, 2012. “This plan offering is unlike anything we’ve offered in the past and is available only to our membership,” said Ms. Hillman. “It takes personal choice to a whole new level, the level of the consumer.” Stay tuned to the Chamber for upcoming informational seminars and open houses where you can learn more, ask questions, and receive expert guidance from the insurance professionals at Bouchey & Clarke, the Chamber’s benefits administrator. For information, call the Chamber at 518.274.7020, or Bouchey & Clarke at 518.272.9866. (Please note: The Chamber will continue to honor existing contracts with other carriers for members already enrolled who choose not to transition to this new program. All new enrollees will be directed to the single carrier program.)

Notes From the Skywrright October 2011 By y Local Astrologer & Tarot Reader Richard Morell

ARIES (March 20 – April 21) These days, the world is stimulating your philosophy and the way with which you see the larger picture. This particular month sees you needing to accommodate significant others in your life, particularly in the marital and the career spheres. It may seem that your role is a bit smaller, and you need to remember you count. Uranus in your sign for the next few years may make your energy a bit volatile, but this is a month to respect diplomacy and work in partnerships to get what you need. Forces this month are a bit greater than you are. TAURUS (April 22 – May 20) Jupiter is in your sign for the rest of the year, so it’s a good time to make the most of it and expand your horizons. That being said, you feel a bit of an aggressive tension in October coming from authority figures who may have a bit of a hot and fiery ego. Much focus will be spent in your day-to-day realm, however, with all the planets in your sector of work, health and hygiene. Be sure to factor in self-care during a hectic month on-the-job. The world makes you ponder the mysterious also for the remainder of the year. All the rest of it happens in that context. GEMINI (May 21 – June 20) The general climate makes you curious about how your relationships change with the times. October’s focus within this larger umbrella focuses your energies on children, fun and games—though some part of you will want to make sure and read the instructions, and know what the rules are. Issues with neighbors could require a bit of assertiveness this month, but beware that some interactions might trigger old responses. Be sure to at least take a pause before saying something. CANCER (June 21 – July 22) As the North Node traverses your sixth sector of work and the day-to-day, you are struck by how the current climate interacts with these areas of life. Much of your October focus however, is on family issues, with much communication, drama, negotiation and taskmastering taking place. A desire to expend energy on your long-range goals and friendships might cause a dent in the pocketbook if you’re not careful. Be sure to balance prudence with any long-range plans you make. LEO (July 23 – August 22) Leos are feeling a bit bouncy these days as a karmic pattern makes an impact in your sector of fun. It provides a context for lots of interactions in your neighborhood and with your siblings. You might find yourself talking lots of blue streaks this month—always keep some water on hand! Mars is in your sign all month, but it squares Jupiter portending that a challenge from higher-ups might instigate your warrior. Lots of power this month, but the wise pick their battles. VIRGO (August 23 – September 20) Isn’t it fascinating how some periods in life bring forth the old family crap in a more visible way? The North Node transits your ancestral and family of origin house, eliciting some of the karma that you have carried along in your life. A bit of your focus in October will be about cleaning up any debris and loose ends from last month, and balancing the old checkbook. Also, you might feel that some legal or systems issues pull out some inner reserves, though it’s a painful process. Still, it will prove to serve you in the long run. LIBRA (September 21 – October 20) Happy Birthday Libra! This is quite the busy month celestially for you, with five planets in your sign! Oh, but there’s so much to do, and with Saturn there, you WILL get them all completed in time and with everything just so. Just the way you like it. Watch out for some

26

October 2011

conflicts between friends and your romantic partner. It has nothing to do with you, though you would love to get involved. The world makes you ponder your own communication style these days. How does one adapt to such chaos? Have fun with it. SCORPIO (October 21 – November 21) Generally speaking, your awareness of the current cultural moment is felt in your wallet and in your values for the time being. This larger cycle lasts for about a year or so. Within that larger field, October’s messages generally are focused inward, as the Sun progresses to your sign later this month. You might feel quite aggressive in the realm of career and reputation, but be careful with your spouse or significant relationships that you don’t deflate their dreams. Those help you have the life you want to lead. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 – December 21) North Node in your sign sometimes can feel like what’s going on in your life is mirrored in your life at large. October’s energies focus on friendships and long-range visions, and there is quite a bit of potential for movement in this area this month. Saturn has been in this sector for the past year, and continues to exact a methodical pattern, which you can work with. The Libra energies emphasize not taking things personally. This month might see you feeling a bit martial about your perspective. Co-workers might see things differently. Channel your energies toward winwin situations on the job. CAPRICORN (December 22 – January 19) October will feel quite a bit pressured for you Cappy, as the dominant energies create a tense aspect with your sun. It’s not that the world is against you, but the focus of the month is on working with authorities and elders to put things in balance. Still, it often feels like your actions seem to attract criticism unfairly. Step back and look at the overall context and fit yourself to it as best you can. The context of the moment confuses you right now, and you will feel like you’re walking in the dark a lot. Look for hidden treasures brought to light by world events. AQUARIUS (January 20 – February 18) If you’re seeking a bit of fire from your partner, this is the month for it! Mars traverses your sector of relationship, which will add energy and assertiveness at the least. The planet is squared by the Taurus Jupiter, which may draw your family of origin into a stressful pattern. It might be good to minimize the contact between the SO and the FOO. This is a good time to communicate your own perspective about larger systems, and legal or publishing ventures are highlighted. Watch for making impetuous blunders this month. Uranus in Aries might cause you to speak your mind at the wrong time. PISCES (February 19 – March 20) Career issues have occupied your mind for the past few months and will continue to do so, though it’s simultaneously low-grade and insistent. October’s energies put awareness on the deep and the dark. Generally speaking this is a time of year that makes you think of the mysterious even though Halloween comes at the end. You might feel a bit overenthusiastic about some events surrounding kids and creativity or casual fun, and it could rebound on your finances if you’re not careful. Balance out self-care with reasonable expenditures. Richard Morell is a local astrologer and tarot reader, at work to become an everyday shaman by the river. His website is frostwolfmagic.net. A MESSAGE FROM THE VET Bites ~ The Final Chapter By Dr. David Stone, DVM

Cat/dog/rodent/bird/reptile...fish. They all bite. There’s nothing more surprising and shocking and humbling than being the victim of a bite. We are hard wired as a species to respect the bite of the beast. They are to be avoided. The psychology of the bite is very important too--a malicious bite is usually a trip to the hospital and will mentally scar us for life. A fear bite equals the doctors office, and a nervous nip just makes you feel like an idiot. I’ve been very lucky in that I’ve sustained no really serious injuries--doctors office stuff, not hospital. I met another exotic bully-breed puppy last week. Nine weeks old. She was alert but not playful. She was quiet but not shy. I wondered what I could do or say to reduce the chance that she would bite people in the future. I talked. Discussed everything. We’ll see. I sedated and x-rayed two dogs yesterday. Two viscous dogs. Different owners, unrelated problems, both snarling and lunging. Very difficult to handle. Made us all on edge--even other patients in the hospital were nervous. Everything came off okay--we got the information we needed and no one (man or beast) got hurt. It was just stressful. Just difficult Bites happen. They can’t not. The only thing this series of articles can hope for is to help those few of you out there who actually want help with a difficult situation. I can’t fix much. Sometimes I can get people headed in the right direction. These biting cases should be handled by someone with talent and insight. Behaviorally speaking, I have neither. I do know that there is no one single way to correct an undesirable behavior. Different animals respond to different people. More important is the owners response. Trainers will not be successful if owners don’t step up and work-with consistency. Owners will not be successful if they hate their trainers. So this article is for you. Everyone else out there either doesn’t want help, doesn’t realize they need help, or in some cases know that there’s even a problem. These notes are also to let everyone know that we have a community responsibility to practice good behavior--to set a good example for our children to follow--to take some responsibility for ourselves and those entrusted to us. Let’s try to value each other. Stopping your dog from running the fence while viscously lunging and barking at a 10 year old kid walking home from school may not do much to solve the worlds problems, but it would help to enable a caring community. Possibly the simple act of retraining--or at the least, restraining the viscous animal would have repercussions...resonnations. Now the child grows up with less fear. Now she sits in Congress and decides not to support a bill banning your breed from your state. Who can know how far the ripples of consideration travel. ~ David Stone, DVM

Kid’s Pages Why Gymnastics is Good for the Brain Did you know researchers believe gymnastics is good for your brain? According to Karen Leggett, owner of KJ’s Gymnastics in Valatie, practicing gymnastics is a lot more than just flipping around the gym for fun. Karen agrees with researcher Debra Em Wilson, MA, & Founder of S’cool Moves, Inc.

Flip on Focus

Any time a child participates in activities requiring the movement of large muscles and the compression of joints, this is referred to as heavy work. Heavy work is a term used in the therapy world to describe the types of activities that help focus the brain. The number one

prescription for children who need to improve focus control is exercise that includes heavy work activities. Dr. John Ratey, author of Sparks, calls exercise "Miracle-Gro" for the brain. Vaulting, hanging, flipping, climbing, and leaping are examples of phenomenal heavy work opportunities for children. Focusing with ease leads to learning with ease. Gymnastics not only improves focus but also builds the foundation for academic skills like reading and writing.

Hang Ten for Handwriting Observing children swinging on uneven bars seems as far away as one can get from observing a child trying to write a paragraph, but actually, the two require remarkably similar skills. For children to have good handwriting skills, they must have strong muscles that work together for a common cause. Mighty abs, back muscles, shoulder muscles, forearms, wrists, and fingers are essential for good writing skills. When children have poor upper body strength and weak core muscles, they have trouble sitting upright at a dek, holding a pencil, and writing legibly. Bar work strengthens all muscle groups responsible for writing with ease. A video game cannot begin to provide the strength and stability that a real workout on the bars provides.

Roll Into Reading Ever see a child do a forward roll using a video controller? It just can't be done. Without the actual motion of rolling, important brain connections are missed. These connections cannot be made without activating an important system that lies deep within the inner ear. This system is called the vestibular system (ves-tib-u-lar) and is the Olympic gold winner when it comes to brain development. Working in tandem with the brain, the vestibular system integrates auditory, visual, and tactile input. Specific types of movement common to gymnastics help the vestibular system develop properly. These include the back and forth movement in swinging, the rotational movement as in twisting, and the up and over movement used for rolling. A fully functioning vestibular system leads to: • Awesome self-regulation skills • Strong integration of the auditory and visual systems for reading • Excellent coordination, balance, and motor skills • Great sense of spatial and body awareness Children who struggle with ADHD, developmental delays, reading failure, or sensory processing issues benefit enormously from participation in gymnastics, preferably non-competitive initially. The next time you watch children doing somersaults, remember what amazing neural connections are going on inside their developing brains. Connections are being made at a rapid fire pace providing the foundation for academic, behavioral, and emotional success.

Rolling as an Advantage One might think of rolling as something done only while performing skills at a gymnastics club, but rolling is a life skill! It's not a coincidence that one of the more famous lines consistently quoted in every day language is, "Roll with the punches." When life hands us our ups and downs, having learned how to roll, literally and metaphorically, is an essential skill that helps us stand on our feet after taking a tumble.

Miss Siggy’s ~ Advice Dear Miss Siggy, My friends and I play this game after school. But today was a little different. We had a fight and I got very mad. I tried to tell her something but she would not listen to me. Miss Siggy is a Can you tell me how to calm myself down? real Dog who Your friend, Very Mad works at a

local school

Dear Very Mad, We all lose our temper once in a while, that’s very normal. What’s important is to know when you’re getting angry and being able to calm down before you lose your temper. For instance, I know when I’m getting angry because I growl. Other kids I’ve spoken to tell me they feel warm, their faces get sweaty, their muscles or belly feel tight, or their hearts beat faster before they lose their temper. Next time you get upset, try and pay attention to your body to see where you feel the anger. When I feel myself going GRRRRR, and I’m getting mad I take three deep doggy breaths and I say to myself, “Siggy, you’re a good dog. You can calm down. Stop and relax and it will be ok.” Sometimes it takes me a few minutes but soon I’m calm. Try taking a few deep breathes and talking to yourself about how you can calm down. You are a delightful child and I am proud of you for asking for help. Woof! Love, Miss Siggy
