Our Towne Southern Rensselaer & Northern Columbia Counties November 2012
EDITOR’s NOTE Dear Readers, I am very excited about thiis issues. Looking forward to November brings me great joy and thanks. I am just now getting used to my life always fast-fowarding a month in time. As early as October 1st, I am thinking about the November Our Towne issue. But, with that said, I have been reflecting on what I have to be Thankful for. Buying Our Towne was in many ways a VERY spontaneous decison for me. The opportunity that was presented to me is something I am grateful for. Ever since I was young, my type A personality planned out each chapter of my life. And with hard work, a very supportive family, lots of luck and great blessings from God, I have achieved what was on my “To Do” list. I will not bore you with the details, but, with that said, I have so much to be Grateful for. My family, my friends, my educational opportunities, my Career (s), my husband, my home, my childern, my home and the blessing of being born an American. And that is the short list. I am a self professed work-a-holic with a desire to make my family a number one priority. It seems like a contradiction, of sorts. A struggle it is. But, in the end, the family I was born with and the family I have made with my dear husband are what is most important at the end of the day. November brings great thanks to all past and present Military. I really can’t imagine having the desire to put my country before everything and anything else. For them, I am so grateful. We, as Americans, have so much to be grateful for , thanks to such devoted Americans. My heart aches for those families who, every day, are missing their loved ones. Some that they are waiting to hold and love, and some that will never come home. As we look to celebrate Veteran’s Day, I want to give thanks to all US Military. Thank you so much for reading Our Towne. And, PLEASE, let our Advertisers know you read about them in Our Towne! Happy Thanksgiving. May you all take a moment to reflect on your Blessings- large or small! Jennifer Felts

The Country Trunk Gift Boutique
Can you believe that George H W Bush was elected our 41st President on the day that I opened my gift shop in 1988? As in history, it has been an amazing journey. When my neighbor, Roger’s Sporting Goods, moved out in 1991, a cut through the cement wall more than doubled the size of the shop. This offered the opportunity to enlarge the stationery department, add home décor, and a baby department. As the journey continued, the flavor of the shop became less “country” as a new fashion boutique was added. The moderately priced clothing and jewelry added a new dimension, and is a popular stop for customers to see the new arrivals. The growth of technology and social media added another challenge to my journey. Thus, you can see us at www.thecountrytrunkNY.com, on Facebook, or submit your e-mail address to receive the monthly e-“newsletter”. My dedicated staff always provides you with an enjoyable shopping experience. They offer individual attention to your gifting needs, and can help you choose the perfect jewelry or scarf accessory to enhance your style. Free gift wrap is always available. The Country Trunk motto continues to be “There’s Always Something New to Discover”. I take pride in offering unique products, and try to focus on Made in USA labels. Many shoppers agree that they enjoy the creative ambience of our frequently changing displays, and the eye appeal that sets our shop apart from all others. Our holiday decorations and nine theme trees are up and look amazing. Remember that ornaments can be personalized for free.

Word of Mouth by
Dr. Joe Lapinski, DDS
Dear Dr. Lapinski: I’m only 39 but had some bad dental experiences. I’ve worn dentures for almost 10 years At the time–I couldn’t afford the other options. I’m not thrilled with the feel and look of these dentures. I’d love a nicer smile. What are my options? ~John S. Nassau Dear John: Well, I’m sorry you are disappointed with your dental choice – Many people wear dentures comfortably & anonymously for a lifetime. However let’s address your 2 specific areas…Function and Esthetics. A denture should stay in place by the suction created between it and the gums/bone. Over time, changes to the bone, worn or old dentures or a poor fit can cause slipping. Regardless of the reasons it doesn’t fit well, relining or remaking the denture or addition implants are all options to help improve fit. Relining: is completed in the office or in a lab. A good option when you like the look but the fit has changed over time. We use an impression to make the existing denture fit to the current contour of your mouth. Remaking is obvious, completed over a series of appointments to ensure fit, function and look. Custom tooth selection helps to create the most realistic, lustrous and functional dentures. Implants: titanium screws are placed in the jaw bone and allowed to heal. They are used to stabilize lower dentures (& upper ones too). In its most simple case, 2 implants are used and the denture securely snaps onto the implants, usually eliminating the need for adhesives and gives the patient the confidence that their denture is secure. The more implants, the greater the stability. When a patient elects to have 5-6 implants, a denture can be made that screws into place and is no longer removable by the patient. Please discuss your concerns with your dentist or hygienist. We can only help you with problems that we know about. Refer to ADA.org for many dental topics. November PUURFECT Kitty of the MONTH... MEET MIKKI My name is Mikki & I’m a beautiful 3.5-year-old, long-haired gray cat with white tuxedo markings and an unusually soft, downy coat. You may have seen me in this space over a year ago as I still have not been adopted. :( I’m considered a specialneeds kitty, as I’m very shy and need a special person to work with me so I can blossom & live a full life with someone. I came to the rescue group as a kitten from a feral mom cat and now all of my siblings have been adopted. Although I’m a shy cat at first, once I warm up to you I love to be petted and to run and play! Toys and treats would go far in gaining my trust. I’m great with other cats and would love to be in a home with at least one other kitty. Since I’m timid at first, I’d do best in a home with older or very respectful children or adults only. I would so love to have a chance at a “forever home” with a good person or family. Can you be the special person for me, a special kitty? I’ve waited for so long! Like all Purrfect Companion kitties, Mikki is up-todate on routine shots, house trained and spayed. For more information on Mikki, please contact Maryann at 331-2221 or at kitties.purrfectcompanions@yahoo.com. Purrfect Companions is a non-profit, all volunteer rescue organization. We are always looking for good volunteers to help with the kitties or assist at our adoption clinics. If you’d like to donate a little time to these worthy animals, please give us a call at 463-8709. Our adoption clinics are held 12:30-4:00 most Saturdays and Sundays at Petco, Northway Mall, Albany NY. Stop by and see some of our other kitties! We know we have one that is just “PURRFECT” for you!

Easy Thanksgiving Desserts for Kids Kids love to be a part of the holiday preparations! Thanksgiving is a fun holiday for kids, especially when they get the chance to help put the holiday meal together. Children can contribute to the holiday meal by making some kid-friendly desserts. Parents can spend quality time with their children while they help their children create some tasty Thanksgiving themed desserts. Mounds of Soil There’s no way to celebrate the harvest better than eating the rich soil itself. To make mounds of soil, first bake a medium batch of chocolate brownies. Once the brownies are baked and cooled, cut out and remove pieces of the brownies and crumble them into plastic, paper or glass cups or bowls. As you crumble the brownies, sprinkle in small amounts of chocolate syrup, chocolate pudding, candy worms or short pieces of cooked spaghetti. You may also add other assorted candy bugs (maybe even real chocolatecovered bugs) into the mix. Mini Cornucopias Unfortunately, bringing a massive, full cornucopia to a Thanksgiving dinner isn’t really feasible. Luckily, there’s a sly alternative that can take its place. Make miniature cornucopias for all the kids instead. Fill waffle cones with pointed ends (like you use for ice cream cones) with an assortment of fruits such as berries or banana as well as ice cream, small chunks of nuts, and a drizzle of chocolate syrup. Place the little cornucopias on their sides on the children’s plates. Source: Ehow

Winter Battery Care By Nancy Shanley of AAA Hudson Valley Consulting our magic snow globe, we can confidently make this seasonal prediction: thousands of drivers will find themselves stranded in the dead of winter thanks to a dead battery. Understanding what keeps your battery cranking can help you avoid being left out in the cold. As air cools, the oil in your car thickens. Parts move slower and it requires more energy for the battery to turn over and start the engine. A battery loses a third of its power in freezing weather. If the temperature drops to zero or below, your battery has only half its power. To keep your battery operating reliably in any season, have a trained technician clean battery cables and check that the charging system is charging at the correct rate. What do you do if your battery has been exposed to very cold weather? A fully charged battery will not freeze unless the temperature drops very low. If it does freeze, it destroys the lead coating and the battery cannot charge. If the sides of your battery seem to bow out, this is a sign the battery is frozen. Never jump-start a frozen battery because it may explode. No matter what precautions you take, your battery will probably be reliable just 3 to 5 years. An aging battery increases the odds that you could spend some unscheduled time in your driveway or parking lot. If you do have battery problems, AAA can help. AAA Battery Service offers free diagnostics – and technicians come to you. We can test your charging system and, at your request, install a quality AAA battery right on the spot. Your new AAA battery comes with a member discount and a 72-month limited warranty and free replacements for 36 months, nationwide. Every battery we replace is recycled. So far, AAA Battery Service and our collection program, AAA Great Battery Roundup®, have kept more than 2 million batteries from contaminating landfills.
For more information on AAA Hudson Valley’s mobile battery service, call 518-426-1000.

518.462.7006 In celebration of Veterans Day, Sunday, November 11th, 2012 Melvin Roads Post 1231 will hold a solemn ceremony at the Post beginning at 1:00pm. Led by Commander Pat Vallee, everyone is invited to offer their thoughts and a moment of silence on behalf of those who have served their country in the military services over the years. Following the ceremony, all veterans and their families are cordially invited to join in a buffet prepared by our Chef Ed Ryan. The buffet will be offered throughout the day until 5PM. There is no cost and all veterans, active duty personnel and their families are invited to attend. Last year well over 100 persons honored our veterans by their supportive presence. Mark your calendar now and plan to attend!
The biggest shopping day of the year is right around the corner. Before you head out the door in the wee hours of the morning , be smart and plan ahead. Here are a few tips to use to make this Black Friday the most successful one yet! 1. Check to see what can be bought online (with free shipping, of course) before Black Friday. If you know the items you need, shop early The sales before Black Friday can be just as good, if not better(better availability too). Remember Cyber Monday, check those Prices! 2. Many stores have a limited number of their door busters. Is it really worth the crowds, the lines and the craziness of it all to save $2 on one item!!!! 3. Remember smaller stores have deals too, and they are less crazy! 4. Wear sneakers!!! Pack Water and Snacks to keep your energy up and the deals flowing! 5. Remember to check Return Policies!! They Change things up for Black Friday, so think before you buy. 6. Shop with 1 or 2 friends, so you can divide and conquer. 7. I also have a friend on Black Friday sitting at a computer at home. So, when I can not find an item in the store, I call them to see if we can purchase it for the same price online. 8. I like to purchase high end luxury items on Black Friday and Cyber Monday . Think outside the box. I love to buy shoes, makeup, bedding, jewelry and even appliances on these 2 days. 9. Remember check when the stores open, and map out where your deals are! 10. Here are some great web sites to use: Blackfridaybradsdeals.com, tgiblackfriday.com, Cybermonday2012.com, Dealio.com, Cybermonday.com. You can register early to get sneak peeks!!
A Veteran’s Day Tribute By Jennifer Felts
Michael Yager was raised in a military family, but didn’t always know that the NAVY would be his fate. His father, a Retired Navy Chief, exposed him to Military Life. Without pressure from his family, Mike joined the Navy to explore his options at 18 because he wasn’t ready to, ”commit to college.” Little did he know, that decision would dictate then next 25 years of his life. Mike enlisted in the Navy after graduating High School in 1985. This was the first chapter of his life in the military. After boot-camp, he selected and was chosen to be trained as an Electrician in Electrician Mate “A” School. It was on a ship out of San Diego, the USS TRIPOLI (LPH-10), where he first worked as an Electrician in the Engineering Division. While he enjoyed this, he saw more opportunity to grow and excel as an officer. He was drawn to apply for the Broadened Opportunity For Officer Selection and Training (BOOST), an Officer Preparatory School. He realized that the Officer ranks brought more leadership and well respected opportunities in the US Navy. After getting accepted to and completing BOOST, he was guaranteed a four year Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps (NROTC) scholarship. The decision to explore a Leadership role in the US NAVY incurred not only four years of college (Officers are required to hold a 4 year degree) but an additional commitment as a Commissioned Officer. He returned “home” and attended The College of Saint Rose where he studied Mathematics. He attended his Naval Science Classes at RPI. After completing his four years at St. Rose, in 1993, he was commissioned an Ensign in the United States Navy and for service selection, was assigned a pilot slot with the hopes of becoming a Naval Aviator. This proud moment for Mike and his family completed chapter two. Chapter three began with his first set of orders to Naval Flight Training in Pensacola, FL. Mike and Chris (eight months pregnant with Jakob) and their son Cole moved to Pensacola, FL for two plus years of flight training and five moves. The requirements to qualify and get a pilot were extremely stringent, including intense physical requirements & aptitude tests. During flight training, their move took them to; Corpus Christi, Tx, Jacksonville, Fl and eventually Brunswick, Me. When he completed flight school, he was awarded his coveted “Wings of Gold.” As a Student Naval Aviator, he trained in three separate aircraft. It was his wish to specialize in propeller aircraft, specifically the P-3 Orion. During the first stages of flight school, he was selected to continue in the propeller pipeline. This accomplishment was one step closer to the goal of flying the P-3 Aircraft. The end of the Flight School (AKA Winging) chapter committed Mike to another seven years in the US NAVY. Chapter Four began with orders to Patrol Squadron Twenty-Six (VP-26) in Brunswick, Me for the next forty-two months. In VP-26 Mike completed two six month deployments. The first one was to Sigonella, Italy in support of the War in Kosovo. The second one was to Keflavik, Iceland conducting realworld operations on flying “on top” and tracking a Russian submarine, Kursk . Typically, the squadron is on an eighteen month cycle which includes twelve months at home for training followed by a six month deployment. During both deployments he traveled the world from Iceland to Italy. It was during his deployment to Iceland his third son, Alec, was born.
Chapter Five was a return to Pensacola, FL for a thirty month shore tour as a flight instructor in Training Squadron Four (VT-4). At this time, Mike was a Flight Instructor for Naval Flight Officers. Chapter Six was a necessary career enhancing disassociated sea tour to a ship. Chesapeake, Virginia, was where he completed a non-flying tour on board the USS ENTERPRISE (CVN65). During these two years, he was a Tactical Action Officer (TAO) and deployed to the Arabian Gulf in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. This tour brought a shift in career path for Mike. He was not going back to fly the P-3 Orion and had a decision to make. At this point, Mike was getting close to a Military retirement as a US Naval Officer . Chapter Seven was to be the culmination of a twenty plus year Naval career. His last assignment brought Mike full circle- back to RPI where he was assigned as an NROTC Instructor. So far in his Military Career, he had avoided going “Boots on the Ground” in a war zone. To his surprise, he was deployed to Iraq for eight months. From December 2008-July 2009, he taught Electronic Warfare to Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, and Marines. pecifically, he would teach them how to operate, maintain, and trouble-shoot electronic warfare equipment installed on their vehicles. He stationed on Camp Victory near Baghdad International Airport. This was in his 19th year in the NAVY. How ironic to be in a life threatening situation so close to retirement, I noted as I interviewed him. Unlike Veterans from Korea, World War 1 & 2, he could e-mail and SKYPE his family every day. How times have changed…. The final Chapter concluded his Naval career. In December of 2009, Mike retired. After fulfilling his (many) commitments to the United States Navy, he was facing the question that he did at 18: What am I going to do with my life? Thankfully, he was strong, healthy and had developed a strong skill set that he could apply to the general work force. He now works as a Program Manager for Momentive Performance Materials in Waterford, NY. He is happy to be home every night with his family and yet savors in the many reminders all around his home of his 20 years of dedication to our United States Military. When asked, he and his wife have “no regrets” and are thankful for the opportunities that the United States Military offered. He joined the military because he was not ready to commit to college, and yet, 20 plus years later… It was humbling to hear Michael Yagers recount of his 20 plus years of service in the US NAVY. I am so grateful that our country has men & women who are willing to make the sacrifice every day so that I can live in peace. Thank you to Mike and all US Veterans who have sacrificed for our country. Our Towne salutes you on this Veteran’s Day!

In ByThe Loop Daryl Bart Sitting at the computer one day, I was very busy on facebook, or amazon or having a spider solitaire marathon, essentially perfecting the ability to tune out my kids. Allison was quietly playing in the room, beside me on the floor, inventing some game of life with the usual cast of characters; Barbie, other Barbie, dinosaur, cat in a dress, toddler toy remnants and the assorted compliment of special stuffed animals. Out of the corner of my ear I heard a single word – “Adopted”. I was drawn out of my internet trance and intrigued by the event she was hosting on the living room floor.
“So, Allie, do you know what adopted is?” “Uh Huh” she says sweetly “it is when you have a baby”, as she arranged Barbie’s limbs and tucked in a puppy. Life Lesson Alert. I needed to get this straight and use the right words. “Well, not exactly. Adoption is when you get a baby that was born somewhere else. Then you become a family. The mommy doesn’t have the baby in her own belly” “Ohhh, you mean the mommy doesn’t get a baby cut out of her?” Note to self, no wonder why my kids have no filters?
I spun around to face her and asked “Allison, who’s adopted?”
“No honey – no baby in the belly –the new baby comes from somewhere else. Like your cousins.”
“Barbie’s new baby” She looked up and held out a trampy looking Barbie, a weeble and a Lego Star Wars action figure to proudly introduce me to the new family.
“Well, Jesse was born in South Korea” She says proudly.
“Do you know what adopted is?” I asked her. Now this is a loaded question - for two reasons. First of all, three of her six cousins are adopted, all from different countries. Ethnically, it is obvious to anyone who chooses to look. As a family, we talk openly on the topic. Adam sought out and met his birth mother in the Bahamas. Jesse might like to visit Korea – someday, but has no immediate plans. And SuJin, typical teenager, claims to have barely endured the 2 whole weeks with her family touring China and visiting her orphanage. Secondly, out-of-town friends were visiting shortly before this incident. Their two young children are adopted from the Midwest. They were too young to know about their origins at the time but will be told. However, at dinner, my son proudly blurted out in that sing song-y way kids do “I know who was born in Oklahoma”, much to the chagrin of their mom and the other wide-eyed parents at the table. Nathan got the “zip-it” look from me and the topic was quickly changed. Later on, we spoke to our kids about judgment and privacy and the sharing of personal information. Just another complicated lesson in a long line of parental mixed messages and tough to grasp topics for kids who hear everything but filter nothing. I digress.
“Right”, I say. “And Su Jin is from China.” “Of course, just like Su Jin. And Adam…” I add. “WHAT, ADAM IS ADOPTED?!?! She stands up, indignant. She is seriously horrified. “Uh, Yeah” I reply. How did this elude her? Adam is the oldest cousin. The first born. Adam is black. “WHY DIDN”T YOU EVER TELL ME?” Hands on her hips. Eyes wide. The wrath of the five year old. “I’m sorry – I really thought you knew – I mean, it isn’t a secret.” “MOM! How am I supposed to know these things when you don’t tell me?!?! Sigh.” She is 5 going on 15 and I see the future in moments like this. I pause, bite my lip to suppress the giggle. “Next time, I promise to keep you in the loop, sweetie” “Fine” she says. Clearly the conversation is over. She returns to her community of assorted friends. Back to mimicking the patchwork of our family, I guess. I think to myself, my daughter has inherited her father’s trait of colorblindness – manifested in this most beautiful way.

Avoid These Seller Mistakes by Cathy Graziano
You want to get the best price for your home, in addition to selling it in the least amount of time. In a buyers’ market such as we have now, homes can take longer to sell. Therefore, it is important to make the right moves at the very beginning of your homeselling process to remain competitive. Here are some common obstacles and how to avoid them. 1. Over-pricing — It is easy to think your home is worth more than the current market may support, particularly after the long run-up in home prices. Since home prices have cooled, home sellers should be prepared to negotiate on price & terms, and stay flexible to other stipulations benefiting the buyer. Sellers must also keep their emotions in check during the process. After all, your home is special to you and your family, and you are proud of the improvements you have made over the years. But, how does your home really stand up to the others? Are those improvements important to a potential buyer? To determine a reasonable listing price, consult with a real estate professional and get sales statistics on homes in the neighborhood including listing prices and actual sales prices, how long it took for the homes to sell, and value comparisons. They can help you determine true market value based on a comparable market analysis. Visit homes for sale in your area and compare what you see in terms of price & sales appeal vs. your home. 2. Negligent Housekeeping — Buyers need to be able to envision themselves living in the home. Take a good, objective look at the condition of your home. Clean, well-kept homes with an updated appearance always stand out, and a little decorating appeal can go a long way. You don't have to buy new furniture to create charm, but you can put toys and clutter away, freshen up paint and carpet, make the most of window coverings, and add a few key accessories. 3. Failing to Fix-It — Buyers, unless they are looking for a fixer-upper, would prefer to move into a home that is in perfect or near-perfect condition. If they have to fix the roof, a broken tile floor, the garage door, worn carpet or just about anything, this may give them pause about buying. At the very least, it may lower the value of the home in the prospective buyer's mind. 4. Not Identifying Exclusions — This can be a cause of contention just at a critical point in the sale. Be sure to specify any special sales considerations or exclusions from the fixtures and furnishings list. Generally, anything permanently fixed to the house is an asset that stays with the home after the sale. So if you intend to take the antique chandelier that is hanging in the dining room, clearly specify that the chandelier is not included in the sale price. 5. Not Understanding the Agent Agreement — Your sales endeavor will go smoothest when all parties have a clear understanding of what is expected. Understand the types of agency agreements when you sign with a real estate professional or company. Be sure to check on fees, commission percentages, marketing plans and timeframes. Most importantly, get copies and put everything in writing Cathy is a resident of East Greenbush and is an associate broker with RE/MAX Capital. Dear Angie, My relatives visit during the Holidays and often don’t contribute much. They usually bring one item to share and stay for at least the weekend! They visit my home for practically every holiday, and I don’t enjoy myself because I am so busy with cleaning & cooking. Not to mention the financial burden of hosting company. HELP! Any advice for the entertainer who has has no energy to enjoy the holiday and is feeling a little resentful? ~Burnt out in Nassau This is a very touchy subject. I remember my Mother telling me “One day I’m going to be to old to do the Holidays.” That time has come for me also, as much as it is a drag to do the holidays and not get much help. It’s one of those things that I know will be over in a day and I just bite my tongue. I ask all my relatives to bring an item to contribute beverages, rolls, dessert, shrimp, a side dish, etc. This really cuts down on my cost but it keeps everyone out of my way. Just remember your time will come when you can just sit back and enjoy the holidays. Unfortunately you will have to wait 10 plus years. ~Angie If you have a question for DEAR ANGIE, please e-mail felts66@yahoo.com. All names and personal information is confidential. Say What? By David Stone, DVM
Bloomingrove Veterinary Hospital I’ve heard I’ve said some pretty amazing things. Has it ever gotten back to you that he said she said you said? We all recall telephone around a campfire or classroom? “Jenny has a pretty dress” becomes “Help me I’m depressed” after about the third person. I wonder about our brains. I suspect we spend much of our time in conversation anticipating and predicting what the other person will say—many of us actually try to finish other people’s sentences for them (I always change mine J). Some folks are so busy calculating their response to the assumed, but as yet unasked, query or comment or observation, that they don’t listen to where you were going. They end up interrupting with some other train of thought. For instance, I say “So I see you’re feeding that awesome Halo Brand dog food, do you find—“--they interrupt and say, “I do, and he does seem to eat less and poop less!” and I say, “Oh, that’s actually quite nice to hear, but I was going to ask if you’ve had enough with the warm and fuzzy names of pet foods—you know, Natural this, Balance that, Holistic this, Organic that, and all the other feel good names.” “Oh, yes—what?” Sometimes people take my meaning to another place long before I get to the point I was trying to make. Fictional conversation: Client says, “So you’re saying he’s dying…” “No! I just said dog’s age faster than people! That’s ALL I said!” “Go on, Doc, I can take it…how long has he got?” “He’s a PUPPY!! He’s got a LONG time!” “Don’t hold back, Doc, I’m a big boy.” I think I just figured it out…I’m too slow for some of you. I know I talk too much—maybe that numbs the brain and sets you up for assumption. After all, someone’s got to finish the thought and it may seem as though I’m not planning to any time soon. Actual event: This morning a client brings in her dog. During her appointment we discussed the possible causes of her dog’s sudden weight loss. We talked about food and bowel habits and drinking behavior and vomiting and kidney disease and Lyme disease and intestinal diseases and cancer and etc. We discussed the one or two tests needed to limit the possibilities. Mom didn’t want to be too hasty—she went home to discuss it with her husband. She seemed to see the picture as much as it was visible without any testing. Cancer was on the list. It’s toward the end of the list. There are several things that are really more likely in this 5 year old dog than cancer. Mom gets home and 23 minutes later dad is on the phone yelling at the receptionists to “get Dr. Stone on the phone!”… So I call him back, and he tells me he wants to set up for the cancer surgery ASAP! I explain that I really think this looks more like a case of Lyme disease which has affected the kidneys, but that a blood and urine test would be required to come to that conclusion--and give us a prognosis. I also can’t say for sure if the swollen spleen and liver are a result of this possible infection or were possibly cancerous tumors. An xray and/or an ultrasound would be best at figuring that out, but those are next steps. If we rule out the most likely cause we can consider next steps. We certainly weren’t ready to jump into surgery in either case. I tell him I think we ought to do a quick blood test to stop the guessing. Dad agreed that would be best and within 20 minutes had returned with his dog. When the receptionist asked him why he was back, he replied “presurgical bloodwork.” If we listen, we have a chance to hear (should be an ancient proverb). Happy listening. In January 1961, as the Cold War escalates, John F. Kennedy struggles to contain the growth of Communism while he learns the hardships, solitude, and temptations of what it means to be president of the United States. Along the way he acquires a number of formidable enemies, among them Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev, Cuban dictator Fidel Castro, and Alan Dulles, director of the Central Intelligence Agency. In addition, powerful elements of organized crime have begun to talk about targeting the president and his brother, Attorney General Robert Kennedy. In the midst of a 1963 campaign trip to Texas, Kennedy is gunned down by an erratic young drifter named Lee Harvey Oswald. The former Marine Corps sharpshooter escapes the scene, only to be caught and shot dead while in police custody. The events leading up to the most notorious crime of the twentieth century are almost as shocking as the assassination itself. Killing Kennedy chronicles both the heroism and deceit of Camelot, bringing history to life in ways that will profoundly move the reader. This may well be the most talked about book of the year. Lynne Catelotti is the owner of Good Buy Books at 330 Columbia Turnpike in Rensselaer. She can be reached at 518-479-BOOK (2665).
