OUR TOWNE

SOUTHERN RENSSELAER & NORTHERN COLUMBIA COUNTIES

NOVEMBER 2013 Dear Our Towne Readers, Welcome to the holiday season! Christmas decorations are already up in the stores! Doesn’t it seem earlier each year? Let’s live in the moment and think about how November certainly offers us all a chance to reflect on the gratitude we have for all good things in our lives. Veteran’s Day is November 11th, and we need to take a moment to thank the Veterans who serve & have served our country. We have all heard the expression, “Freedom isn’t free.” So true. The sacrifices that the military and their families make for our country leaves me speechless (this rarely happens)! So, for all those who served and serve our country & their families who support them, I say THANK YOU. I wish all of the Our Towne readers a very Happy Thanksgiving. I am so very grateful for all of the good things in my life. As this Holiday season starts, we should take time to have gratitude for what we have. Sometimes the to-do lists, obligations and pressures to have the “perfect” holiday take away from the joy of the season. Let’s all just agree that we aren’t perfect, may not cook or decorate as if we live in the Pinterest world, and will say NO when the demands get too great. Resist the urge to do it all and focus on what is most important~ During this season, please support our local businesses. They need us to survive- and let them know you saw them in Our Towne. Thank you for reading- I hope you enjoy the magazine.

The Our Towne Spotlight Shines On... J & J Reilly Automotive & Truck Repair J & J Reilly Automotive is three generations of Irish hard working, honest, capable mechanics who will treat you like family from the moment you meet. Just walk into the office, located at 56 Old Miller Road in East Greenbush, and you will immediately feel like your own Mother is ready to hear your tale of woes. Armed with great knowledge of mechanics, fresh coffee and pastries, the matriarch of the family greets you with a smile and open ears. Pat Reilly, the wife of Jay Sr., sits behind the desk and runs the family business. It doesn’t take long to realize why they are a true American success story. Honest, proud, hardworking are what sets them apart from many of their competitors. The J & J Reilly family of mechanics includes Jay (often called Sr.) & JJ, who are both ASE Certified & Paul, Jay’s Grandson. Pat runs the operation and has great knowledge of mechanics herself. Sara, JJ’s wife, assists her in the busy office, managing this growing family business. She is ready to listen to your issues (mechanical and otherwise) with a calm & supportive manner. She will tell you that they are very successful because they don’t do unnecessary work and won’t charge you for the time that it takes to figure out what is wrong with your vehicle. Pat often tells her customers that “we spend your money like it is ours!” Not many businesses can say that! They are busy and successful because of this honest & fair approach. Established in 2004, J & J Reilly Automotive has grown by leaps and bounds when word spread that there was a local family who provided the highest quality work at a fair price. They offer the best pricing in town for exhaust systems, tune-ups, oil changes, suspension, brakes and replacement or rebuilding of transmissions. They also offer Car Detailing! Bring your car in for free coolant and battery testing. They are in the business to fix & maintain your car. Performing the highest quality work at a fair price is what this business is all about. The J & J Reilly Automotive motto is “Let Our Family take care of Your Family.” Through their generous spirit, they also make it a priority to give back to the community that they live and work in.

During the month of November, receive a free synthetic blend oil change with the donation of a turkey (10lbs or more). Pat works closely with many missions and food pantries in the area to ensure that the turkeys find a good home for the holiday. In December, Pat & her family are committed to making the Holidays a special time for local children whose families are struggling. “We collect toys and work with local churches that help match up children with the donated toys.” The December Specials will be in their Our Towne ad~ stay tuned. So, next time you are in need of reliable, high quality mechanics, call Pat at 729-2263.

Project Felix to the Vet

Better Known as Taking the Cat to the Vet We love our kitties, but sometimes it might feel like a major ordeal to bring them in to the veterinary clinic for their annual exam. You have to plan how to catch them, navigate and negotiate getting them into a carrier and that doesn’t even cover traveling with them in a car or sitting in the waiting area with a cross (or possibly car-sick) feline who wants everyone to be as miserable as he or she is! Fortunately, there are ways to make this task a little easier on both human and kitty. 1.Put the carrier out a week or longer ahead of time. Generously pad the interior with kitty’s favorite soft bedding or even one of your T-shirts (it smells like you). Leave the door open, so kitty can come and go as she pleases. 2.If she goes into the carrier on her own, reward her with delicious, special-occasion treats or catnip. Turn the carrier into a wonderland that delivers the best rewards. 3.If the time permits, start feeding kitty in the carrier. Turning the carrier into a place where kitty feels safe and is rewarded will go a long way in making kitty feel comfortable in the carrier on exam day. 4.On non-vet days, let your cat explore the car for a few minutes. Taking your cat to the car, letting him or her safely explore and then leaving the car takes some of the (scary) mystery out of the car. Again, rewarding kitty with a special-occasion treat or a little catnip in the car is a wonderful way to help build a positive association of the car for your cat. 5.Sometimes just taking the edge off of the nerves can help. There are some wonderful products, such as Feliway. Feliway is a behavior pheromone treatment designed specifically to help cats cope with stress. It comes in a spray and a couple spritzes in the carrier may help your cat feel a little less tension. It also comes in handy “single serve” wipes. 6.If your kitty is a nervous one, call ahead to the clinic to let them know you’ll be on time and to see if they can prepare the exam room for you. If the room is available, they can spray it with Feliway and whisk you in the room right away so your kitty won’t have to spend more anxious minutes sitting in a carrier in the waiting area. 7.If your kitty experiences motion-sickness, you may opt to skip the morning meal, if your cat’s health allows. Call your veterinarian to discuss the best options for your cat. 8.On the big day, if you’re starting to feel stressed out, stop and breathe. Cats are highly sensitive and can detect your anxiety, which will only make them more anxious, too. At Nassau Veterinary Clinic, we work very hard to try to make every one of our furry clients feel comfortable and relaxed. If you have any questions about traveling with your cat, please don’t hesitate to call us. We want to see you and your cat enjoy the visit or at least not feel like it’s a daunting ordeal! —Dr. Carolyn Sanford

It’s more than Just Drilling & Filling As a Dentist, my number one goal is to diagnose & treat your dental problems. I hope I do a good job explaining what & why I’m doing something and that I’m meeting your expectations both in the results and your overall experience in my office. They don’t teach this in dental school, but I’ve learned that most successes & conflicts stem from good or missed communication. So, I strive for the good variety. As the Consumer, you have the right to choose a Dentist you trust, that will take care of your individual needs and make recommendations based on actual findings. It’s my job to provide you excellent customer service. In my office, I spend an hour with each new adult patient, collecting the necessary information about you, your medical history & dental history, plus I document past & current dental needs. I use the tools including visual diagnosis, instrument probings, and x-rays, which ensure I can see below the surface and in-between teeth. This time with you lets me address your concerns, past experiences, identify your fears, goals and how you feel about your smile and I share my findings. It’s important to me that my patients are informed and don’t leave with lingering questions. I know that if you don’t think I answered your questions, you might get scared, get turned off to dentistry or just never come back… That would be missed communication. I know I have the best intentions when I see my patients but even I don’t cover it all. So here are some questions to think about. Don’t forget to jot down some notes or ask for a pen while you’re in the chair. •Can I be doing anything else to improve my dental health? •Am I using the right products, toothpaste, etc?

PREPARE YOUR HOME FOR THE WINTER MONTHS BY CATHY GRAZIANO

Although we traditionally think of spring as the season for home maintenance, there are steps you should take in the fall to make sure that your home is ready for the winter months. By performing these common maintenance tips each autumn, you can help protect your home's value and prevent major repairs.

Roof and Gutters Rain, ice, snow and wind can all cause damage to your roof and gutters. Now is the time to trim back all tree limbs and vegetation away from the roof. You also should remove debris, such as leaves and sticks from your gutters and downspouts. Clogged gutters do not allow water to properly drain away from the home, which can cause seepage in your ceilings and walls. You can also invest in gutter guards, a screen that prevents debris from entering the gutter and directs the flow of water away from the house and into the ground.

Water Heater

You don’t want to find out that your water heater is not operating properly when you need it most. So use this time to perform an annual inspection, which includes having your tank’s pressure and temperature relief valve checked. Heating and Cooling System If you have a forced warm-air heating system, you should check the exhaust vent and air shutter openings for dirt and dust. Clean any lint and dirt from the blower blades, motor and burner (if you have a gas heater). Vacuum the air passages, check, and replace the fan belts if necessary. To prevent airborne dirt from circulating throughout your home, wash out your reusable filter or replace it if it is disposable.

Doors and Windows

To help control heating costs, you want to make sure that your doors and windows are properly sealed. Now is the time to repair or replace weather stripping around door bottoms and jambs and window frames. Check for loose or missing glazing putty and caulking for deterioration. If you have storm windows, install them.

Water Pipes Frozen or burst pipes can cause major damage to your home and be expensive to remedy. Before frigid weather hits, protect your pipes in unheated areas from freezing by adding insulation, which reduces heat loss from hot-water pipes and condensation on cold water pipes. This can be accomplished by wrapping the pipes with heating tape or blanket insulation and duct tape or by encasing the pipes with preformed plastic foam.

Fireplace Before you light the logs and get ready to settle in front of a cozy fire, make sure that your fireplace is in good working order. Clean the chimney flue and if needed have it inspected and repaired. Check the seal on your flue, which is designed to keep out drafts. Replace the seal if it is loose or damaged. If you decide to do the fall maintenance yourself disconnect the power for any electrical or gas systems. In addition, before inspecting, cleaning or making any repairs refer to your owner’s manual for all equipment for proper instructions, which should be the final authority on any maintenance. Although this list is merely a guide, it can help you keep your home in good shape and have a winter free of major repairs.

GOOD BUY BOOKS

NEW & GENTLY READ BOOKS

330 Columbia Tpke.

479-BOOK (2665)

The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan is a book I would recommend to people who like adventures and mystical creatures. It’s about a boy named Percy Jackson who discovers that he’s son of Poseidon, the god of the seas. Percy’s mother took him to a place called Camp Half- Blood, the only place safe for him. He witnesses his mother being taken to the Underworld; Percy goes on a quest to save her. Will he make it to the Underworld in time? Find out in Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief.

Congratulations to Ami Melville, age 10, from Ichabod Crane Elementary School. Ami will receive a $10.00 Gift Certificate to Good Buy Books in East Greenbush.

UNDERSTANDING SOCIAL SECURITY RETIREMENT BENEFITS As you near retirement, you will likely have many questions regarding social security. Determining when to start taking social security may be the most important financial decision you will ever make, as it affects your monthly income for the rest of your life. Some people believe that once they hit age 62 they should begin receiving social security benefits, while others prefer to wait as long as possible. While there is no one right answer, there is a right answer for you. Determining when to start receiving social security is a critical component of your retirement income planning. The most critical factors to consider are your life expectancy and what you plan to do with your social security income. If you anticipate spending your social security every month and may not need the income past age 70, drawing on social security at the earliest possible time likely makes sense. If you believe you will live well into your 80’s or beyond, waiting to receive social security might be the better option. Remember, the earlier you begin drawing benefits the lower your payout rate will be. The longer you delay the onset of payments, the higher the monthly benefit will be, though there is no benefit to waiting past age 70. As you know, many people, either out of choice or necessity, are working well past the normal retirement age. Some continue to work and defer collecting social security. Others may work but opt to collect their social security to help satisfy current financial needs and obligations. Some continue to work and collect social security to invest it in hopes of accumulating a large nest egg for the future. Finally, some who work at retirement age collect their social security and invest it in some form of insurance to protect their assets, benefit their heirs, and/or provide for potential future medical needs. As you plan for your retirement, it is wise to consult with a trusted financial professional to determine the optimal time for you to begin collecting social security benefits, decide what you should do with the benefits you receive, and assess what your cash flow will look like after you collect that last paycheck. For today’s retirees, social security will almost definitely be able to provide a monthly income. What needs to be determined is when the payments should begin, and what should be done with the income you receive.

At Center Square Asset Management, Kenneth & Deborah Lane offer securities and advisory services that can help you find the right answers to questions critical your long term financial security. Join us Tuesday, October 29th at 6:00 p.m. for our seminar on social security planning. Seating is limited, please call 518-477-5468 or send us an email at dlane@centersquareasset.com to RSVP. Pearly Gates BY

Daryl Bart I am non-religious. I wasn’t raised with a specific religion but practiced both Christmas and Passover socially depending on which grandfather we visited. I didn’t miss it growing up – because I didn’t know I didn’t have it. I mean sometimes I wish I had a religion to call my own, but I just couldn’t just make myself believe in something I never had. Over the years I’ve been asked to define this non religion. It is a pretty odd question – but society expects us to believe in something. “Excuse me, Who is your higher power?” There is no simple answer when the answer is not God, but energy and creation and the “Golden Rule”. My husband is raising our kids Catholic with my permission and sympathy. I don’t object to it and it is very important to him. But it is something he is giving them, I can’t participate. So, he takes them to church on Sunday and I go to the gym. It works for us although not everyone agreed with our approach. My Father-in-Law went to church weekly out of duty and habit, for a lifetime. He collected and saved every single bulletin as a testament to his faith. We called it his “ticket in”. We would joke, out of earshot, that when he died – he’d reach the pearly gates, show Peter the huge stack of booklets and proudly walk on through. Then came his diagnosis. Ray spent 2 years staring cancer in the face with an attitude that any child of the depression would be expected to have, a resolve tinged with a cloak of denial “what Cancer?” “They say I had a heart attack….” His fortitude and strength even made the hospice workers say ”he’s still here after all this time?” He’d go on his terms, and he did. A week of services, 2 funerals and a round trip to NYC left us needing to do something calming, We had a family weekend planned before, so we decided to go anyway. So, off to Pyramid Life Center we went. A quiet, peaceful, rustic place, nestled on a lake in the Adirondacks. It was just what we needed to reflect & recharge. On Sunday, Joe went to services held in the chapel while I hung around the lake. Allison soon found me, wanting to see Daddy.

Daryl Bart Dcbart1@gmail.com So I took her to the chapel. Sister Monica was presiding over mass as we tip-toed in the back door. We arrived in time to hear a moving reflection of my father in law’s life – Joe’s parish friends silent in their repose. It was a good thing to be in that chapel at that moment. Sister eyed me as I made my way to Joe’s pew. She looked right at me and gestured for me to come up to the alter. I looked at her – and then behind me – looking for the intended recipient of her finger. It must be some mistake – maybe she wants the person behind me. No, she means me. “Come here” she said insistently, “Help me”. No denying Sister Monica – she gets what she wants. She then handed me a container of wafers. I am perplexed, confused. I look down at the bowl and back at her – then out to the congregation – Joe is literally laughing at this situation. This is all a terrible mistake. “Monica, what do I do?” Follow me, she said. My head is speaking silently & I hear my heart pounding “What if after years and years of collecting his bulletins, Ray has been standing in line at those Pearly Gates for a whole day, waiting for a place..only to be thwarted by his atheist daughter-in-law hindering his chances of a good bunk for all of eternity?” I know he loved me for me, regardless of my belief system. He loved me for the way I love his son and for his grandchildren. So, I looked down, took a deep breath in – leveled my eyes at the person standing in front of me, at the congregation, my family and did what was asked of me, “Body of Christ”. It’s been five years since Ray passed away and we love and miss him everyday. During this season of Thanksgiving, although I am grateful for many, many people and things in my life, I am most thankful that he shared his faith with me in this special way and that I in turn could pass that on to my family.

ADDICTED TO SAVINGS... BLACK FRIDAY SURVIVAL GUIDE The biggest shopping day of the year is right around the corner. Before you head out the door in the wee hours of the morning (or maybe in the middle of the night), be smart and plan ahead. Here are a few useful tips to make this Black Friday the most successful one yet! 1. Check to see what can be bought online (with free shipping, of course) before Black Friday. If you know the items you need, shop early The sales before Black Friday can be just as good, if not better (better availability too). Last year there were HUGE sales on the day before Thanksgiving. Of course, remember Cyber Monday & check those Prices! 2. Many stores have a limited number of their door busters. Is it really worth the crowds, the lines and the craziness of it all to save $2 on one item!? 3. Remember smaller stores have deals too, and they are less crazy! 4. Wear sneakers!!! Pack Water and Snacks to keep your energy up! 5. Remember to check Return Policies!! They Change things up for Black Friday, so think before you buy. 6. Shop with 1 or 2 friends, so you can divide and conquer. 7. I also have a friend on Black Friday sitting at a computer at home. So, when I can not find an item in the store, I call them to see if we can purchase it for the same price online. 8. I like to purchase high end luxury items on Black Friday and Cyber Monday . Think outside the box. I love to buy shoes, makeup, bedding, jewelry and even appliances on these 2 days. 9. Remember check when the stores open, and map out where your deals are! HAVE A PLAN!!!!! 10. Here are some great web sites to use (SIGN UP NOW TO GET UPDATES on DEALS): Blackfriday.com Blackfridaybradsdeals.com tgiblackfriday.com Cybermonday2013.com Dealio.com Cybermonday.com Good Luck, Have Fun & Be SafeWritten By an Anonymous (Recovering) Shop-A-Holic in the Our Towne Community

DEAR ANGIE Dear Angie,

I am a teenage girl who lives in this SMALL town and have grown apart from my childhood friends. They no longer have the same interests that I do. They just want to live on Facebook, text, shop, hang out and talk about boys. I am involved in sports and other school activities and they are always making me feel bad about not "wanting" to hang out with them. The truth is, I don't want to just hang out with them (and I don't have time either). I want to DO things. They are not motivated to participate in activities and build their resume for college. They are making me feel bad and guilty because we have all been "best friends" since preschool. HELP! How do I handle this without giving up the things that are important to me. From, Torn Dear Torn, I will tell you it is not going to be easy. You really only have two options - 1st option: Time to move on from your childhood friends and start hanging out with kids that have similar interests. The kids that are in your clubs would be a good place to start cause if they are in clubs then you know they are motivated to build their resume for college. I'm not going to lie this is a very hard option to do because I bet you eat lunch with them, go out to recess with them, want a friend to sleep over you call them so you are really not ready to let go. 2nd option: Do what your doing now. Do your own thing, make new friends in your clubs and let them get mad at you. Eventually they will stop calling and you will gradually move to the other friends that are on your sports teams and clubs. Good luck! This is a very tough transitional stage but its life. Everyone can't grow up the same way ! Good LuckAngie

THE Y EDUCATION & LEADERSHIP PROGRAMS By Patrick Ciraulo Capital District YMCA District Executive Director Greenbush Area Branch All kids have great potential. At the Y, we help them set and achieve their personal and educational goals. They gain confidence as they recognize the Y as a place where they belong and can feel comfortable exploring new interests and passions. Through leadership and academic enrichment programs such as the Black & Latino Achievers program and youth and government, we make sure that every child has an opportunity to envision a positive future, and to take an active role in strengthening their community. The central purpose of the Black & Latino Achievers Program is to help youth set and pursue higher education and career goals. The Black & Latino Achievers Program reaches deep into the heart of the community for both adult and teen achievers. The YMCA utilizes the talents of successful professionals, community leaders, and corporations to bring a much needed positive influence into the lives of young people. The YMCA’s Youth in Government program gives community youth an opportunity to learn firsthand about government and civic issues by taking an active role in the democratic process, boosting youth development and contributing to a stronger community. Youth in Government is a civic engagement and leadership development program for middle- and high-school students. The program helps develop critical thinking competence, strengthens interpersonal communication skills, and raises awareness of and engagement in community issues and their possible solutions. Youth participate in both preconference training experiences and a statewide conference, during which they play the role of a critical civic leader, debating and finding solutions for current issues in their communities. If you have questions or need more information about these programs please call Doug GeJay at 518-477-2570 ext. 1252 he may also be reached at dgejay@cdymca.org.
