It was 7 years ago that John McNiven, owner of Scott’s Hallmark Stores around the capital district, purchased Ann’s Hallmark in Rensselaer. It was at this time, that John began his relationship with the Our Towne customers. He grew up in the “Hallmark Family,” so to speak. His dad worked for Hallmark as a sales person and then opened their first Hallmark store in Colonie Center almost 30 years ago. John joined the family of Hallmark chain stores and now owns 7 across the Capital District. It was 2 and a half years ago, when space became available next to Scott’s Hallmark in Rensselaer, that he decided to pursue his idea of creating a Giftique that would deliver better branded items and retail lines to the Our Towne communities. The idea of providing the Our Towne communities a place to purchase better brands, “on this side of the river,” was embraced immediately.
You can still “shop local” and support a family business, while purchasing the better retail brands. Effie & Isabel’s Giftique is named after his grandmothers. What makes it most successful? John fully credits his managers, staff & customers. Between the three Effie & Isabel’s Giftiques and 7 Hallmark stores, John is a very busy man. Without the support of his fantastic employees he said that there would be little success and growth. His employees are dedicated to providing excellent customer service, and getting to know the customers on a deeper level. “When you pick out a gift at Hallmark or Effie & Isabel’s Giftique, you are celebrating moments in life. It may be a happy occasion such as a birthday, anniversary or graduation. But, we also help our customers honor those who have left us by picking out a memorial piece. We sell many Pandora charms & Alex & Ani bracelets that show support for causes dear to the customer.” John adds that “we are in the business of social expression, and want to help our customers celebrate all aspects of life through their purchases.” The staff can assist you in picking out the right jewelry or piece when you share the motivation behind your purchase. They do value the connection with their customers and will certainly take the time to help you choose just the right gift for yourself or others.
Effie & Isabel’s Giftique is a certified “Shop in a Shop” for Pandora, Vera Bradley & Alex & Ani. They work closely with the company representatives to ensure that they are exhibiting the high standards set by the manufactures. You can purchase products from Kameleon, John Medeiros Jewelry, Stonewall Kitchen Products, baggallini, Uno de 50, Tea forte’, Crabtree & Evelyn, Lenny & Eva, Thymes and more! They also sell products from LOCAL artisans & entrepreneurs Effie & Isabel’s invites you to join them November 6th -9th for a huge Customer Appreciation Event weekend. There will be many in store promotions and giveaways all weekend. Mark your calendar to attend the Holiday Open House on Saturday, November 8th. Vera Bradley will be hosting a VIP Event and offering a $49 tote bag for only $5 when you spend $125. Pandora will be offering a free item with a $100.00 purchase. Kameleon JewelPops Holiday Promotion is offering a “Frozen” inspired JewelPop for free with a $100.00 purchase. Representatives from the various companies will be on hand to work with you personally, along with the Effie & Isabel’s staff. This will be a fantastic day to get started on your holiday shopping, and possibly win a gift basket or free item! Want to stay in the loop about promotions and new products that Effie & Isabel’s sells? Like them on Facebook today! Effie & Isabel’s Giftique is located at 279 Troy Road (Route 4) in the Rensselaer County Plaza. Wonder if they have a particular item in stock? Give them a call at 518-283-5075.

Word of Mouth By Joseph R. Lapinski, D.D.S.
WWW.LAPINSKIDENTAL.COM Dear Dr. Lapinski: I’m worried that my kids will get cavities from all the Halloween Candy they get. Are some better than others to keep? Great question. Holidays are great segues for dental topics. With those Halloween buckets sitting in your pantry or on top of the fridge, piles of treats just calling to you‌this is a timely question. First let me say that we all love candy. Yes, even me (Snickers!) The trouble is, not all candies are created equally. The worst candies are those that are sticky and slowly dissolve in the mouth, like taffy, caramels, airheads, hard candy, etc. Chocolate by itself, while not technically good for the teeth, is not nearly as bad as the sticky stuff. Some do say that a little dark chocolate is even good for you?? (don’t know if that is really true, but my wife certainly believes that!) With both sticky & hard candy, the issue is prolonged contact with the teeth. The longer a sugary food remains in the mouth, the more potential there is for decay. This is true for any sugary treat, and most food in fact. Any food remaining in the mouth, getting caught between teeth & not being removed by saliva, brushing or flossing, is essentially food for the bacteria that creates the decay in your mouth. While you’re asking specifically about Halloween candy, a single piece of candy or several over the days after Halloween, will not likely cause cavities. It’s the everyday habits that really gets your mouth into trouble – like unsupervised snacking, chewing gum & snacking on “fruit snacksâ€?, concession stand visits and daily treats. Additionally, sucking on mints & hard candies because of dry mouth or low saliva can put you at an increased risk for decay. And it can happen fast! I have some patients that for all sorts of reasons, have new cavities forming between every single dental visit. So enjoy the Halloween Candy, stay away from the sticky stuff, make sure you brush and floss and keep the habits up all year round. As always, if you have questions, ask – because we can’t help you if we don’t know about it.

NOVEMBER 2014
Dear Readers, This Our Towne Magazine is dedicated to Veterans who were generous & brave enough to make sacrifices for our country. These dedicated soldiers are the reason that the United States of America celebrates freedom each and every day. To all men & women who have served our country, thank you. Warning: This issue has quite a lot of red & green as we approach Thanksgiving; and of course the start of Holiday Shopping! With that said, I of course want to remind you to please shop where you can make a difference this holiday season. Small Business Saturday is an American shopping holiday held on the Saturday after Thanksgiving, during one of the busiest shopping periods of the year. First observed on November 27, 2010, it is a counterpart to Black Friday and Cyber Monday, which feature big box retail and e-commerce stores respectively. By contrast, Small Business Saturday encourages holiday shoppers to patronize brick and mortar businesses that are small and local. Help make a lasting impact in the place you call home on Small Business Saturday®. It’s a day to celebrate the local businesses that make your neighborhood great. This year, the big day is Nov. 29th. Watch for promotions that will announce how much of an American Express STATEMENT CREDIT you can receive by shopping at a small business on November 29, 2014. Last year, if you registered your AMEX card during the open period, you received a $10.00 statement credit for shopping local that day. I purchased $12.00 worth of items at The Country Trunk on Small Business Saturday and then received a $10.00 statement credit (because I registered my card during the open enrollment period). I have 3 AMEX cards, so I will get $30.00 back for shopping small & local on November 29th! I get to save money, thanks to American Express, and support my local economy! If you have not liked Our Towne Magazine on Facebook, I urge you to! Every day you will receive content that is in the current issue, as well as current news & events from Our Towne communities. Promotions, Our Towne Reader Specials.... “Connecting the Community” through print, web and social media continues to be my goal. I wish you all a very Happy & Safe Thanksgiving. Take time to enjoy & be thankful for what you have now; and not focus on what you don’t. Sometimes everyday life centers around gaining things we don’t have, wishing for more, mourning what is lost. We can’t move forward in life if we are living in the past and not appreciating what is in front of us NOW. With that said, have a great holiday living in the moment and enjoying life for what it is. Thank you for reading Our Towne Magazine. Jennifer Felts

67TH ANNUAL
Troy Turkey Trot
More than 8,000 participants from 36 states are expected to gather in the home of iconic Uncle Sam Thanksgiving morning for the 67th running of the Troy Turkey Trot, the world’s 64th oldest road race and the 12th oldest in the nation on November 27, 2014. The event, which includes a 5K and 10K featuring “out and back” course configurations, also offers a Grade School Mile and Turkey Walk. A costume contest for individuals and groups with prizes awarded for “Best Thanksgiving Day Costume” and “Best NonThanksgiving Costume” is also slated. “The Troy Turkey Trot has celebrated fun, family and fitness in the Collar City since 1916,” said Troy Turkey Trot Event Director George Regan, noting that 7,855 participants took part last year braving brisk conditions. “Based on the growth of this event, we’re expecting another record field Thanksgiving morning.” The day gets underway at 8 a.m. with the 10K, which drew 1,508 registrants last year. Race officials will close the 10K course after 90 minutes by 9:30 a.m. Those unable to complete the 10K in the allotted time period are asked to enter the shorter 5K distance, which lured 5,288 participants in 2013 and kicks off at 10 a.m. Families are invited to show their support and cheer on their runners. “We are delighted to once again host the Capital Region’s premier Turkey Trot,” added Mayor Lou Rosamilia. “Whether you live in Troy, Albany, Schenectady or beyond, we invite you to come to Troy with your family and friends to experience our event, soak up our city’s rich history, and kick off your holiday festivities.” Following the 10K will be the Grade School Mile, which is open to children up to eighth grade and the Turkey Walk, a one-mile fitness walk for those who prefer to burn off their pre-meal calories at a slower pace. The Turkey Walk and Grade School Mile are both timed events. Participants for both events, which get underway at 9:30 a.m. and 9:35 a.m. respectively, will receive a dry-fit commemorative t-shirt, finisher’s item and well as post-event refreshments. Registration for all events is currently open at TroyTurkeyTrot.com.
There is no day-of-event registration. While registering online, all participants are encouraged to make a donation to the Regional Food Bank of Northeastern New York, this year’s “regional” charity, or Joseph’s House & Shelter, this year’s “local” charity. Spectators and participants are also encouraged to bring a non-perishable food item to the Troy Atrium to give to the local food pantry. Ample free event parking is available on race day at a number of Front and River Street parking lots. A comprehensive map of Troy parking lots can be found at: http://troyny.gov/Departments/ Parking.aspx. Post-race refreshments and entertainment will be offered in the finish line area. Complete race results will be featured after the event online at TroyTurkeyTrot.com. For more information or to register, visit www.TroyTurkeyTrot.com.

NOVEMBER 7TH TENTH ANNIVERSARY MEMORIAL GALA The Family and Friends of Liza Ellen Warner Association is pleased to announce the Tenth Anniversary Memorial Gala to be held on November 7th 2014. This year marks the 10th anniversary of the tragic death of East Greenbush resident Liza Ellen Warner, a victim of domestic violence. Since then, the family and friends of Liza Ellen have taken the initiative to raise awareness and restore hope to the thousands who are victimized by domestic violence. Sadly, just two short years ago, Nikki L. Hart, another East Greenbush resident, was also murdered in a senseless act of violence at home. The Hart family has come together with Family and Friends to rally the wider community to the issue of domestic homicide. Among the events held during the year, a fall-of-theyear gathering is held to bring together the community to rally around this critical issue of our day. This year’s Gala will be held at the Hilton Garden Inn, Troy beginning at 6pm, November 7th. The video “Shelter” narrated by Natalie Merchant will be shown at 6pm. After this informative screening, a cocktail hour will be held, with dinner following. A Chinese auction will also be held during the evening’s get-together. Tickets are $60/person, $100/couple and may be purchased by calling Martha Lasher Warner at (518) 9288346 or emailing her at LizaEllen29@gmail.com. Proceeds from this event will benefit Unity House Domestic Violence Program and the Nikki L. Hart Memorial Children’s Fund

TRASH TALK by Vince Coppola Have a Safe Fall! I was trying to look up other contradictory statements like this on The Google, and found a Wiki How article about how to actually fall safely. The first key point was “Keep your head up”. As we travel into some very low ceiling basements, this article has proven, shall we say, to be way, way less than helpful. November is a magical time of year to get your home organized before winter approaches. It is also a time of Thanks, as in “Thanks for reminding me, Scrapster, about calling you over to take this stuff out of here”! Inside: Air conditioners, large or small household and kitchen appliances, old pots and pans, computers, any electronic or stereo equipment, file cabinets, extension cords, vacuum cleaners. Basement: Tools, dehumidifiers, water tanks and water heaters, water softeners, furnaces, boilers, cast iron, steel or copper pipes and pipe fittings, wire, power cords and extension cords, lights, fans. Outside: Lawn and patio furniture, metal gazebo, beach chairs, gas grill, fire pit, outdoor cookers, metal swing set, basketball poles, metal fencing, gates and fence posts, gutters. Garage: Aluminum storm doors and windows, steel doors, car batteries, bicycles, lawn mowers, lawn tractors, weed whackers, snow blowers, outdoor tool such as rakes or shovels, wheelbarrows, car or truck parts, gas powered and electric motors, ladders, shelving, cabinets, tires with rims. Our company is Scrapster, LLC, the Capital Region’s premier NO COST scrap metal and appliance removal and recycling service. We are a local family owned business and cover the entire Capital Region. We have processed almost 2 million pounds of scrap metal since 2010! We are fully insured, convenient, and reliable and always provide top Quality work to get the job done safely and correctly. Please call us anytime at (518) 505-5055. Scrapster will remove the items from exactly where they are located-you don’t need to do a thing. “Don’t Worry…We Can Take It!”™ Please visit our website at www.scrapster.com for more information or to schedule an appointment online.
Have a HAPPY THANKSGIVING!
CLUTTER ZONE By Daryl Bar t
I’m a Fall Projects kind of girl & have a HUGE list of house projects. When I am on a roll, it can feel like Cheers when I walk into Curtis Lumber: “Daryl!!!” OK, not exactly. I’m full of ideas! Specifically, I start strong but almost always have loose ends. Finishing is not a strength. The hubby just rolls his eyes at me. When we first got married, he indulged the project ideas, wallpaper (didn’t end well) stenciling (never happened), a wall covered in picture frames (I lost interest before I started). You get the picture. I swear Pinterest was invented for lost souls like me who collect ideas but never really do them. Last month I had a great idea. I made an event on Facebook Called “10 Projects in 10 days” Catchy right? Invited friends, voila – instant accountability! Wrong. Finding time to schedule a project, no less 10 projects, between soccer games, family stuff, a trip to the mall, Insanity class & my job? Easier said than done. So, I made my list and just like I do with my workout videos, scheduled 45 minutes , set a timer and figured whatever was accomplished in that time would have to do. Project 1: Bedroom Closet. Items ranged from size 4 to 12 so I needed to get real & be harsh. Bye bye dirty old flip flops, bye bye too big party dress, See ya capris (note: capris rarely look good on anyone, just saying). It was a success. And I have so much space now! Why was I keeping all of that stuff? Project 2: BOOTS!! Not fair but I counted my mall trip as project because I found brown boots I’ve been looking for since last year and that’s an accomplishment.

Project 3: Both bathrooms : tossed samples, diaper crème, night lights, hair products & random sticky things. Even tossed the electric toothbrush graveyard, although I pardoned the hair dryer/ curling iron graveyard till next time. Project 4: Beachbody Office: Got me a label writer & filed a years’ worth of paper. BAM! Project 5: Unsubscribed to as many email lists in 45 minutes. Plus, I did it watching Scandal so I get a Multitasking Bonus!!! Project 6: Nite stand/Book shelf: Using the closet technique, I cleared every unread magazine, catalog & book that was bought borrowed or shared. Note to self: get back to reading more! But go to the library! Project 7: Kitchen Pantry: This was just out of control..between our foodie ways and our daughters gluten free stuff, this needed a ruthless approach. I dumped everything I didn’t remember buying, all weird jellies & canned goods, stale cereal, crackers & any item with a past expiration date-the winner a bag of gluten free school snacks “Best used before Aug. 2005” Project 8: Kitchen clutter zones – I HAD 3. Not surprising it was mostly garbage. Dramatic results – hope I can keep it this way – Doubtful. The 10 days ended, I got 8 projects done (skipped 2 days). I’m proud of what I did but still have some loose ends…I need to clean out my car’s trunk (I call it Project #9), which now houses 2 boxes from my closet, 1 box of books & 2 bags other random stuff. Joe is not at all surprised & is probably rolling his eyes at right now. But at least I know can move on to the next thing on the list. First up, painting the living room. Curtis Lumber here I come!

Our Towne Congratulates KJ’s Gymnastics on 15 years of Success! KJ’s has been in business since October of 1999 and in its present location at 3143 Route 9 Valatie since September of 2002. It is under the direction of Karen Leggett, a lifetime resident of Columbia County. She was a competitive gymnast at Chatham, taught at Yury’s School of Gymnastics for 21 years and then started KJ’s. She has taught gymnastics to preschoolers to adults for the past 35 years, coaching Regional and State Champions. Karen has attended many National and Regional training seminars on all aspects in this field. Gymnastics helps with Brain Development, math and writing skills. For the toddler and preschool child, all the crawling, rolling & swinging done in gymnastics improves and helps develop the skills your child needs to be successful in life. For all ages we teach life skills, like falling, jumping forwards & backwards, and balance to name a few. A gymnastics base can improve any sport whether it is your back hand in tennis, your jump shot in basketball or throwing and catching the ball in baseball/softball, to name a few. KJ’s Gymnastics is dedicated to developing the ABCs of your child’s athletic and mental ability through gymnastics in a safe and fun way. Agility and awareness; balance, coordination & confidence are just a few of our program components. We also strive to develop strength, posture, self esteem, courage and determination. KJ’s training facility has the latest gymnastics equipment for teaching the basics of gymnastics. With wobble beam & bar, sweet spot training devices along with floor mats, balance beams, bars, vaulting and pommel horse, rings and trampolines, we give your child a unique experience. KJ’s offers gymnastics classes for children 18 months (earlier if very active) through adults. We host children’s birthday parties and field trips. Private lessons are available for any gymnast needing or wanting additional help. Our monthly Parents Night Out gives parents time to go to dinner or see a movie while we supervise and have fun with the children. Also for 7th grade students & up is Pole Vaulting instruction and drills taught by Karen’s son, Brian Leggett. The 2009 MAAC Indoor Pole Vault Champion, will help any track athlete wanting to improve their technique or learn to pole vault. Join us in the fun with the sport that will enhance and help any other activity! For more information please e-mail us at kjsgymnastics@ gmail.com or call 518-758-2554.

'Tis the Season.... to Keep Pets SAFE Tips and guidelines from NASSAU VET
As you begin counting down to the “comfort and joy” of the holidays, pause and be sure pets will be safe. Any veterinarian will tell you, 'tis better to prevent a disaster, than struggle to save the life of your furry family member. Our staff hopes these reminders keep you and your pet home for the holidays, not at the emergency clinic. Shopping, parties, wrapping presents, cooking up feasts, rushing. All part of our beloved experience. Unfortunately, pets only seem to notice our stress and absence. Avoid many holiday disasters by providing pets with more exercise and play. Instead of unwrapping new toys the day of the holiday, consider offering up these special distractions during the week(s) PRIOR. This provides your pet with new things to occupy his time while you are out late, and special moments together when revealing each prize. Our staff recommends AND USE OURSELVES food/treat dispensing toys. If you already use a KONG, stuff a few with yum yums or a meal.... and have ready in the FREEZER to pop out when the dog needs a diversion. Stop by Nassau Vet and pick up a Buster Cube, Slim Kitty Ball, Busy Buddy or Food Pyramid. Our staff regularly use them to exercise our pets' bodies and minds. Ask us about them! Festive Foods: Just DON'T Do It!! Baked goods, chocolate, raisins, onions, fatty foods, turkey bones, pork. Name a holiday food - it'll probably cause digestive problems including dangerous pancreatitis, heart arrhythmias, seizures or even death. Instead of sharing rich human delicacies, buy your pet's favorite treat, or cook up a bit of PLAIN chicken, fish, sweet potatoes or frozen green beans. Stick to things your pet has safely eaten before, and enjoys. And a little goes a long way. Flowers, Plants and Trees: Poinsettias are a common holiday plant to avoid, but even more dangerous are lilies, holly and mistletoe. Just one tasted leaf from a lily can cause acute kidney disease for a kitty! Potpourris and simmer pots can also cause serious harm including chemical burns; sometimes the oils are ingested by cats while grooming themselves after exploring them. It's wisest to scent your home with non-toxic choices such as scented candles kept safely out of reach, under close supervision. Yuletide plants can be silk/plastic and kept out of reach. The dangers of tree decorations are legendary.... and true. Of special concern – tinsel, glass ornaments, the water at the bottom of the tree, and anything pets might eat or chew on (ok, that's everything!). Best to keep pets out of the room completely. OTHER COMMON MISHAPS: Please remember to keep drugs out of reach and off counters. Be vigilant with beverages, too – alcohol and eggnog are no no's. Remember pets are enamored with electrical wires.... YIKES! Part of holiday disaster prevention is having these numbers posted: Nassau Vet: 766-2636; Capital District Animal Emergency Clinic (Latham): 7851094. Have a SAFE and joyous holiday!
