The Our Towne Spotlight Shines on... Fred’s Who's your guy? When you need new tires, brakes, alignment, oil change, battery check... who do you trust? Fred's Discount Tire & Auto is celebrating their fourth anniversary this November. Fred Sliney wants you to know that he offers you over 30 years of experience, 8 years of education and an old school work ethic. A man who is very straight forward and speaks from the heart, Fred tells me point blank that they are "in business to serve the people. We are here to develop long term, honest relationships with the community and greatly appreciate them supporting a small family owned & operated local business.” He wants everyday working people to have affordable auto care from a trustworthy, local source. If this sounds good to you, make FRED YOUR GUY! Fred even offers a 10% off regular price for Seniors, Veterans & Emergency Personnel Service workers. He chose to open his full service automotive repair & tire shop at 320 Columbia Turnpike in Rensselaer (next to the Skyline Diner & across from Aldi) because the building was filled with great history and success of a man that also had "an old-school work ethic." His story is like many other business owners; filled with relentless drive for success, passion and commitment to growth. Fred's Discount Tire & Auto will be open 6 days a week to accommodate the busy snow tire season; Monday-Friday 8-6 and Saturday 8-3. Now offering a free convenient shuttle, you can drop off the car and they will get you to home or work for the day. Raised in South Boston by a strict Father, who "Didn't ask. He demanded." Dad was a 30 year Veteran, he was not raising any kid without the highest work ethic and drive for success. Dad didn't have the funds to send Fred to college, but Cape Cod Tech was a local 4 year trade school where Fred learned how to be a mechanic. He was a star pupil and even after he left to work at Sullivan Tires, a large local chain of auto & tire centers, he was often called back to the school to help problem solve mechanical issues. Sullivan Tire sent him to the local community college where he took Sociology classes. At 22 years old, Fred was the youngest store manager at any Goodyear Independent Service Center. He continued to work for “Corporate America” for many, many years before he was ready to put his name on the sign and open his own shop. Fred is now focused on passing his work ethic and pride of workmanship onto his 24 year old son Anthony & Joseph who is 22.

Our Towne Chats with....Grapeful Wines and Spirits Q: Would you like to share any personal/background information with Our Towne Readers? I am a Graduate of Maple Hill High School; and my parents are from Maple Hill and Columbia HS. We have all lived in town for over 30 years.I am always looking to find ways to help support our community. Q:What year did your business start? Did you start the business or take it over? What is the history? Store was originally opened November of 1978 as Sinnotts Wine and Spirits Shoppe. I tookover October 2016, and renamed the store Grapeful Wines and Spirits, because I believe that you “have to be grateful for what you already have, in order for the universe to give you more!” Q:How and why did you get into the business? I had recently moved home after living in Hawaii for about a year, and was looking for new job. Bill was looking to hire a manager. My grandmother was Bills first employee back in the early 80s. So I had her give Bill a call after I put in my application, and he called me at 930 at night on July 4th to schedule an interview. Q:What made you decide to be a small business owner? Bill had been looking to sell the store, so one day we were chit chatting about it in the office, and he asked me if I would be interested. By the age of 25, I had worked at over 20 different places, and never lasted more than a year or so. When I started the take over, I had been here for 5 years, and never missed a day of work...that spoke volumes for me. I enjoyed what I was doing, and had no intentions on leaving, and figured it was a great way to secure the job in case he sold it to someone who wasnt looking on keeping a full time manager. Q:What are the greatest challenges of running a small business? Remebering that even though I am stressed, that I am doing just fine. Also, being able to forcast what is going to sell and how much of it so we dont run out. Q: What is the best part about being a small business owner? Knowing that I am helping 5 people in our community with a stable income, and seeing so many people that either Ive known my whole life, or know my parents somehow. Sharing smiles with people and knowing that cusomters know their appreciated here is a great feeling. Q: Are you known for anything special? Always having a smile on my face, and 99 cent 50 ml shots! Q:What do you love most about the business? Being a part of the community, spreading joy to customers, and always being up to date on fun and funky new items. Q: Do you have any specific goals you would want to share with the community and potential customers? I’m really big on donating to the community activities, as well as collecting donations for different foundations and charities. I am always working on bringing in more customer requests at a good prices and long time favorites we might not carry. Please stop in and meet the owner of Grapeful Wines & Spirts, Rebecca Cramer! She greatly appreciates you supporting her small business at 1649 Columbia Turnpike in Castelton. Need more information? Call 518-477-8397 &follow us on Facebook & Instagram.

WWW.ROCKYSMUSICSTUDIO.COM Mozart Concert at Kinderhook Reformed Church Derek Grout, owner of Harvest Spirits Farm Distillery, recently gave me and Assemblyman Ashby a tour of his distillery operation in Valatie. Established in 2007, this family-owned business uses locally grown apples to produce several award winning craft spirits. They’ve been voted the Best Distillery in Columbia County for many years in a row, in addition to receiving numerous awards like: American Distilling Institute (gold, silver and bronze), New York Distilled Spirits Competition 2018 (best in class vodka), and Men’s Journal (top 5 apple brands in the country). The distillery sits behind the Grout family’s Golden Harvest Farms roadstand, a popular destination in our area that continues the tradition of serving delicious locally-made food and drinks. The farm was awarded Best Donuts in the Capital Region by Capital Region Living Magazine for the 7th year in a row and also won Best Apple Orchard in the Capital Region. I’m proud of this family farm and the things they do to give back to our community and local organizations in need. Stop by Harvest Spirits for a tour and tasting and then swing by the roadstand to prepare for Thanksgiving. I’d suggest their pecan apple pie and some tasty Granny Smith apples to add to your stuffing. A drink that goes great with Thanksgiving dinner is an Apple Cider Bellini (Cornelius AppleJack Vodka, Prosecco and Golden Harvest apple cider). To make a pitcher: 8 oz. cider, 8 oz. vodka, 1 750ml Prosecco and apple slices for garnish. Fall is also the time of the year when Medicare beneficiaries can, if they so choose, change to another Medicare Plan or Insurer. Medicare is a Federal Program to provide a basic level of Health Care to our nation's senior population paid though a longstanding payroll tax. In some instances, persons with disabilities may also be covered. Original Medicare Part A is generally for Hospital Expenses. Medicare Part B is for some doctors' expenses. Medicare Part D is now a required Prescription Drug Coverage. For those who like the Original Medicare plans, there are Medicare Supplement (also called Medigap) plans available from insurers to cover items not included the original program, such as deductibles, copayments and some medical services while traveling outside the country. These standardized plans are defined by letter and are identical regardless of the Insurer offering the coverage. Each insurer can set their own premiums, so if you decide on a Medicare Supplement, it pays to shop around. Medicare Advantage Plans are an alternative to Original Medicare. These plans provide the basic Medicare Services typically through a network of providers and often include other benefits that are not covered in Original Medicare. Medicare Advantage Plans typically include prescription drug coverage as part of the overall plan design. Fall is the ANNUAL ENROLLMENT PERIOD (AEP) for Medicare beneficiaries which runs from October 15th through December 7th for coverage beginning January 1, 2019. During this time, Medicare beneficiaries can change their Insurance Coverage without penalty. How often should I look at my Medicare coverages? We advise that at least once per year, each Medicare beneficiary review their current coverage to make sure that the plan selected still makes sense based on the Beneficiary's current health care needs. Sometimes patients change medications, patients change doctors, or may decide to use different health care facilities. The plans do sometimes change as well, adding or removing providers, changing the covered medications or services under the prescription plan. It is good practice to evaluate every time there is a significant change in your health status and at least once per year. I would like help in reviewing my Medicare options. Who can I call? Please feel free to call us and we will help you. Our process involves looking at your current providers and medications, working with you to find the best match of your needs to all of the providers available in your county of residence. We schedule one on one evening and weekend meetings, via telephone, in the comfort of your home or at a local establishment that is convenient to you. If you have INSURANCE QUESTIONS? WE CAN HELP. To Ski Or Not To Ski? By Daryl Bart Growing up, I almost always got something ski related for Christmas. One year a ski jacket, the next boots and gloves, followed by goggles and long johns. That would go into rotation. Being a skier is a commitment. As a kid, I loved that my dad lived in the Catskills, and we could ski on weekends and holidays. Skiing was fun, we made friends with the mountain regulars and I got really good at it. Sophomore year in college, I joined the travel ski team. That had a “no tryouts” policy which was good for me. I had watched the classic Wide World of Sports “agony of defeat” video clip a million times, I was a little nervous, but I needed something to do, so I went for it. Ski team was awesome. We were all very serious about having fun, and a few were pretty competitive, but it was mostly fun for me. I never excelled at racing, I was clearly more of a recreational skiier but still made ski friends from Buffalo to West Point and about 20 other colleges in between, staying in college gyms, bad motels, fancy condos and any parents living basement that would take us. It is a funny dichotomy, since skiing is super expensive and college students are notoriously broke. But we were resourceful, packing tupperwares of dorm food, peanut butter and ramen noodle packets. Sometimes we’d scalp our lift tickets for pizza money. By pizza, I mean beer. We teenagers were a resourceful bunch. Good times. When Joe and I were dating, we joined his hospital ski club. I have always been a fair weather skier, one of my requirements being daylight, but, I was young and in love and well, I agreed. When the signups came around the following year, I had a 3 second conversation while gazing at my sparkling engagement ring and decided that night skiing was definitely a dating thing. We didn’t do that again, but over the years we did our fair amount of (day) skiing together. When the kids were old enough to hit the slopes, we got them lessons and started our own cycle of gathering the ski equipment, even designating a closet as the “ski closet” with the sheer volume of necessary equipment and accessories to support a family of skiers. Skiing was a sport all four of us could do together. I’ve talked about how I have been a resistant sports mom and my kids were generally cool with the fact that I while I’m their biggest advocate, sitting on the sidelines for endless activities is not my thing and while I’m thrilled to watch a game, I can’t go to every one. With 2 kids, in 3 sports each, that would amount to approximately 1,235,355 games practices and chaperoning each year, and I have things to do. They got it. I attended a lot of games, and skipped a lot too, preferring to chat about the play by play over dinner. Skiing we experienced together. I even bent my strict “no-night skiing” rule a little, so we could all get in a few runs after ski club lessons. So time has passed. Life, sports, work and Joe’s knees got in the way of skiing in recent years, leaving those barely used skis hanging on the garage wall. Someone tried to buy them at my ill-conceived garage sale. (side note: If I ever hint at having a garage sale EVER again, please stop me). The good news is that Joe’s knee operation is scheduled for later this month and should be all better in time for some spring skiing. That suits me since as previously mentioned, I’m a fair weather skier, and in addition to preferring daylight, I also resist frigid temperatures. The other day, I was enduring hour number 4 of sitting on bleachers at a volleyball tournament (yeah yeah, I know what I said 3 paragraphs ago) and Nathan called from college. He’d visited the college fair and joined the ski club. He said the kids seemed really fun and he wondered if he could sign up for a ski trip over winter break. It’s funny how one call can flash a lifetime of moments. For me the fun we had as kids on the slopes, the antics of my ski team, huddling with Joe on a ski lift in the dark and cheering for the kids as they navigated their first black diamond. All I could do was smile. I couldn’t say “YES, of course” to Nathan fast enough. I knew we done our job of sharing the love of skiing, and that adventurous spirit we wanted for him, well, it was alive and well and in that freshman college student taking the chance on himself. And best of all, now we know what he’ll be getting for Christmas!

By Nassau Veterinary Clinic, PLLC Each year in December, we invite those who have lost a pet during the year to attend a special event at our veterinary clinic honoring the beloved pets who left our sides far too soon. Our remembrance evening centers around our holiday tree, which is heavy with paper pawprints decorated by these families. Each fragile ornament is embellished in warm remembrance of a much-loved pet. The following passage was written by Peggy Frezon; she and her husband were honoring their dog, Brooks.

Hang a Pawprint Angel Ornament on the Tree

Monday, December 16, 2013

The invitation arrived with a little paper ornament with a pawprint and angel wings. There was to be a memorial service at our veterinarian office, for pets who had crossed over the rainbow bridge this year. My husband and I both knew right away that we wanted to attend, and honor the memory of Brooks. First, I decorated the paper pawprint. Then we drove up to Nassau Vet, which was decorated with lovely luminaries up the driveway. There was a packed house in attendance, and many of the vet staff. We hung our ornament on the tree... and looked at the others... Dr. Shane read a beautiful story, Dog Heaven by Cynthia Rylant, and someone else read Cat Heaven. Then names were called, and when our pet's name was called, we were instructed to ring a little bell. After that, people were invited to stand up and share a memory or story of their pet. I simply told about how reluctant I was to adopt an 11-year-old dog, but that the year we had together was wonderful and I didn't regret a thing. Many other people read poems they'd written, most choking back tears as they thought of their pets. Thank you to the staff of Nassau Veterinary Clinic for caring so much about our pets, and each one understanding the depth of emotion we all feel for our furry family members who have crossed over the rainbow bridge. We love you, Brooks. And here's to all the others who have lost a beloved pet this year. — Peggy Frezon is author of The Dog in the Dentist Chair (Paraclete Press), Faithfully Yours (Paraclete Press) and other books about the

human-animal bond. www.peggyfrezon.com

This year, our remembrance evening will be held at 6 p.m., Sunday, December 2. We invite everyone who has lost a pet to join us.

Finally, YOU'VE DECIDED TO SELL YOUR HOUSE! YES! By Jeff Raia Everyone is on board, family, friends and even the skunk that has been living under the porch rent free for the past 8 years. What now? Where do you focus your money, time and resources to get it sold in the least amount of time, for the maximum amount of money? It would be nice, if we decided to dedicate a large portion of our own funds to pre-sale fix-up and updates and that 100% would be returned/refunded in the resulting higher sales price. Here are some simple ideas to get you focused and moving forward to selling: CURB APPEAL: Landscaping, an industry standard is to dedicate 10% of the value of your home to dress up the lot. If that number is hard to swallow, at a minimum, create a nice inviting, captivating space on the front porch or yard. Freshen up the paint on the front porch, railings and front door. Add color with annuals, perennials or seasonal flowering shrubs; mulching, edging, removing weeds (including the trees growing in the gutters) and get the grass as green and full as possible. This welcoming feeling makes potential buyers want to preview your home. Remember we buy on emotion and justify with facts!

AARP a free t many o directl welcom Coordi the site recruit Volunt registe upper r follow at jsee

CLUTTER and CLEAN: We want the interior space to feel large, appealing, bright and cheery. Remove excessive pieces. This could be a daunting task. Get your family or friends to help you donate or throw belongs out ( When in Doubt,Throw It Out, If You Don't Use It Lose It ). Remove personal items, heirlooms, moose heads, family photos & awards. Clear out books, movies, cds that will not appeal to a wide range of your buyers. We don't want to potentially offend or distract them from seeing themselves living in our home. When cleaning, we want to create a clean, fresh, inviting atmosphere through our senses. Neutralize the smells that are offensive. This is where our loved ones or professionals can help us as well. When we live in our space 24/7, our sense of smell might be a little off. We want all surfaces in the home sparkling, thorough cleaning of every room, windows andpower wash siding and walks. COST or PRICING to SELL: Price it a LITTLE LOW I say. I like what REALTOR.com has to say " Aim to price your property at or just slightly below the going rate. Today's buyers are highly informed, so if they sense they're getting a deal, they're likely to bid up a property that's slightly underpriced, especially in areas with low inventory". 90% according to NAR from Move Sales Inc. is the percentage of potential buyers who will look at property just 15% priced below market value. That's when we professional agents see multiple offers, in essence driving the sale price up. Let us help you sell! We are only a phone call away. Also, keep a look out for my Sellers Seminar coming your way soon at our NEW location in the ShopRite Plaza off Rt 4 at 102 Van Rensselaer Square, Suite L, Rensselaer NY 12144.

BONNIE SHANNON WINS DANIEL W. Casey Library Advocacy Award. Given annually by the Friends of Libraries Section of the New York Library Association, the award honors a volunteer whose efforts have significantly contributed to the growth of libraries or Friends of Libraries organizations. Established in 2005, the FOKML has grown from a tiny group of eight members to a busy, vital organization now numbering over 225 members, and Bonnie has guided it all the way. With a clear vision she worked to develop procedures and obtained its 501(c)(3) non-profit status. She has served on the Friends Executive Council from the beginning and spearheaded its two annual book sales, book consignment activities, and the Friends bookstore which operated in the historic Feed and Seed building from 2013 to 2016. Bonnie represents the interests of the Friends and the Library to local organizations, municipal groups and political decision-makers. My staff gets flooded with calls at this time of year with questions about dental plans, annual spending reports, HSA’s, FSAs and squeezing in college students on break. We’re happy to help. The fortunate folks that get dental benefits thru an employer, spouse or parents have the opportunity to really maximize them. While usually a fixed amount annually (say $1500), unused benefits do not roll over. If you’re too late for this year, it’s worth thinking about for 2019. One of the hardest things for us is to watch patients with unused dental benefits leave them behind. This might not be relevant for the person who comes twice a year & is in the “no cavity club”. However, if you’re someone that’s been considering repairing, replacing or have a nagging feeling something is going on in your mouth a few things are true. Dentistry doesn’t get cheaper if you wait. The earlier we find it the more time and options you have and knowing the big picture helps. No dental problems ever get better by themselves & often get more painful, more complicated and more expensive to fix. Simple cavities can turn into root canals, chipped and lost fillings into the need for crowns, bridges, extractions and implants. If you don’t need any dental treatment specifically, getting among other things, regular cleanings and check-ups, getting up to date on diagnostic xrays, flouride, sealants, consultations, sports & night guards and long range planning is a great idea. Getting in sooner, rather than later, we can detect early signs of cavities, oral cancer & periodontal disease which are often silent and not painful if there is anything. Let your dental staff help you maximize your benefits, review any outstanding plans and maybe even squeeze you. The dentist just might save you something. As always ask questions, we can’t help you if we don’t know about it. DrJoe@LapinskiDental.com or DrBarile@LapinskiDental.com PS - Don’t forget we are once again hosting the Halloween Candy Buyback November 1-9th - please call Darlene, Paula & Karen for our drop off & collection times.

Wishing you a Happy, Healthy, Season of Smiles from all of us here at Lapinski Dental

Schodack Supervisor’s Report for October 2018 In a continuing effort to keep residents informed of my activities as well as issues pertaining to the Town, I submit to them this report for October of 2018. As always, further information can be found on the Town’s website or it’s social media pages by searching for Town of Schodack on Facebook or Twitter. While it may seem hard to believe, 2018 is already winding down. Throughout August and September, I have been meeting with the Town Board and Comptroller to begin the work of building the Town Budget for 2019. Additionally, department heads throughout the Town have been working hard to put together and submit their proposals. Over the course of the next few weeks, the Town Board and I will work on reviewing these proposals, offering suggestions, and approving changes with the goal of continually seeking to provide the best value and service to our taxpayers possible. Residents are encouraged to attend Board meetings in the coming weeks to stay fully up to date on budget proceedings. A final Budget should be approved and announced later this month. Please follow the Town’s website or Facebook page for any further announcements. By the time many of you will be reading this, the Town will have or will in short order be taking delivery of the playground equipment that will be erected at the Town Park. Once the equipment has arrived, site work and construction of the playground will commence. If all goes well and weather cooperates an opening of the playground may occur around Thanksgiving. The Town Board and I are excited for this project to be completed and add an additional attraction to our Town Park to further enhance the experience of residents there. I look forward to announcing the official opening very soon. And finally, I, along with the Town Board, want to extend our condolences to Director of Planning and Zoning Nadine Fuda and her Family on the recent passing of her mother, Dorothy Rivers. Our thoughts and prayers are with her and her family at this time. I hope everyone has a wonderful Thanksgiving. Supervisor David Harris

Why are my toes curled and painful? It could be a condition known as hammertoe. Hammertoe is a contracture (bending) deformity of the joints of the small toes. This bending can put pressure on the toe when wearing shoes, causing problems to develop including corns, calluses, contracted toes and even open sores in severe cases. The deformity can become worse over time. Because of the progressive nature of hammertoes, they should receive early attention. Hammertoes never get better without some kind of intervention.

The most common cause of hammertoe is a muscle/tendon imbalance. This imbalance, which leads to a bending of the toe, results from mechanical (structural) or neurological changes in the foot that occur over time in some people. They can also be inherited or can be due to trauma. Hammertoes are progressive—they do not go away by themselves and usually they will get worse over time. However, not all cases are alike—some hammertoes progress more rapidly than others. There are a variety of non-surgical treatment options including padding, changes in shoes, medications and orthotics that can help with symptoms. In some cases, surgery may be indicated. Once our doctors have evaluated your hammertoes, a treatment plan can be developed that is custom suited to your needs.
