Holiday Shopping Safety Tips Shopping during the holiday season can present unique danger. Taking a few prevention measures can help keep your holiday season joyous. The holiday season is a time when busy people can become careless and vulnerable to theft and other holiday crime.

The following tips from the Bethlehem Police Department Crime Prevention Section can help you be more careful, prepared and aware during the holiday season.

•Shop during daylight hours whenever possible. If you must shop at night, go with a friend or family member.

•Dress casually and comfortably.

•Avoid wearing expensive jewelry.

•Do not carry a purse or wallet, if possible.

•Always carry your Driver License along with necessary cash, checks and/or a credit card you expect to use.

•Even though you are rushed and thinking about a thousand things, stay alert to your surroundings.

•Avoid carrying large amounts of cash.

•Pay for purchases with a check or credit card when possible.

•Keep cash in your front pocket.

•Notify the credit card issuer immediately if your credit card is lost, stolen or misused.

•Keep a record of all of your credit card numbers in a safe place at home.

•Be extra careful if you do carry a wallet or purse. They are the prime targets of criminals in crowded shopping areas, transportation terminals, bus stops, on buses and other rapid transit.

•Avoid overloading yourself with packages. It is important to have clear visibility and freedom of motion to avoid mishaps.

•Beware of strangers approaching you for any reason. At this time of year, "con-artists" may try various methods of distracting you with the intention of taking your money or belongings.

WORDS TO THE WISE for DECEMBER

Well, December is showing itself to be a wonderful month with strong connections and warm embraces. Something much welcomed after some of the previous trials and tribulations we have had to recently make our way through.

During December you are going to become aware of just how lucky you truly are when it comes to having people who love and appreciate you, in your life. It is a month of being able to identify with strangers and have that moment of conversation that leaves you feeling truly connected. Of relationships that may have seemed strained or stagnant starting to show signs of re-growth and reconnection.

It also shows in December, as your life starts to soften, and hardships decline, if just for now, that you may have trouble believing it to be true. That you are waiting for the ‘other shoe to drop” or things to decline again.

Unfortunately, I can not promise this wonderful moment is forever, but I can state with certainty, to the extent that you can embrace good fortune and accept it, is in direct balance to the chances that this is the new way of things in your life.

The message for December, is don’t hold back on love. Express yourself. Say I love you, I appreciate you to those who make your life meaningful and say it with gusto because with this December, what you commit to emotionally, is what you will live completely.

North Pole Strawberry Smoothie

Holiday Cookie Ornaments

1 package (10 ounces) frozen strawberries in syrup, partially thawed and undrained 1/4 cup water 2 cups vanilla frozen yogurt 2 tablespoons vanilla reduced-fat yogurt 1 strawberry-flavored or peppermint candy cane, about 6 inches long, finely crushed Green decorating gel

1 pouch (1 lb 1.5 oz) Betty Crocker® sugar cookie mix 1/3 cup butter or margarine, melted 2 tablespoons Gold Medal® all-purpose flour 1 egg 36 small candy canes 2 containers (1 lb each) Betty Crocker® Rich & Creamy creamy white or vanilla frosting

1.Place strawberries and water in blender. Cover and blend on medium-high speed until slushy.

Blend on medium speed until smooth. Transfer to 2-cup measure.

2.Wash and dry blender. Place frozen yogurt and reduced-fat yogurt in blender. Cover and blend on medium speed until smooth.

3.Place crushed candy cane on small plate. Pipe decorating gel around rim of two 12-ounce glasses. Dip rims into crushed candy.

4.Carefully pour yogurt mixture and strawberries at the same time into glasses, creating a half-and-half design. Serve with large drinking straws if desired.

1.Heat oven to 375°F. Line cookie sheets with cooking parchment paper. In medium bowl, stir cookie mix, butter, flour and egg until soft dough forms.

2.On floured surface, roll dough until about 1/8 inch thick. Cut with 3- to 3 1/2inch cookie cutters. Place cutouts 1 inch apart on cookie sheets.

3.Bake 5 minutes. Meanwhile, break off top of each candy cane to create loop for hanging cookies.

4.Remove cookies from oven; press 1 candy piece on top of each cookie to make a loop. Bake 1 to 2 minutes longer or until edges are set. Cool on cookie sheets 2 minutes. Remove from cookie sheets to cooling rack. Cool completely, about 20 minutes.

5.Line cookie sheet with parchment paper. Place 1 container of frosting at a time in 2-cup glass measuring cup. Microwave uncovered on High 45 to 60 seconds, stirring every 15 seconds, until melted. Dip each cookie in frosting, allowing excess to drip off. Place cookies on parchment paper. Decorate as desired. Let stand until frosting is set, about 1 hour.

Holiday Appetizer Wreath

Cheerios® Christmas Trees

6 slices bacon 1/2 cup chive-and-onion cream cheese spread (from 8-oz container) 2 cans (8 oz each) Pillsbury® refrigerated crescent dinner rolls 2 cups Green Giant Select® frozen broccoli florets (from 14-oz bag), thawed, finely chopped and patted dry with paper towel 1/3 cup diced red bell pepper 1 egg, beaten 1 teaspoon sesame seed Fresh rosemary, if desired

6 cups Honey Nut Cheerios® cereal 6 tablespoons butter or margarine 4 1/2 cups miniature marshmallows Green food color Red cinnamon candies or sliced gumdrops

1.Heat oven to 375°F. Cook bacon as desired until crisp.

Drain on paper towel; crumble bacon and set aside.

2.Unroll both cans of dough; separate into 16 triangles. On ungreased large cookie sheet, arrange triangles with shortest sides toward center, overlapping in wreath shape and leaving 4-inch round circle open in center (see diagram). Crescent dough points may overlap edge of cookie sheet. Press overlapping dough to flatten.

3.Spread cream cheese spread on dough to within 1 inch of points. In small bowl, mix crumbled bacon, broccoli and bell pepper; spoon onto widest part of dough. Pull end points of triangles over broccoli mixture and tuck under dough to form ring (filling will be visible). Carefully brush dough with beaten egg; sprinkle with sesame seed.

4.Bake 25 to 30 minutes or until deep golden brown. Cool 5 minutes. With broad spatula, carefully loosen wreath from cookie sheet; slide onto serving platter. Garnish with fresh rosemary. Serve warm. Store in refrigerator.

1.Line a cookie sheet with waxed paper.

2.Pour the cereal into a 4-quart bowl. Set the bowl aside.

3.Place the butter and marshmallows in a 3-quart saucepan. Heat over low heat, stirring constantly, until the mixture is smooth. Remove the saucepan from the heat.

4.Stir in the food color until the mixture is evenly colored. Pour the marshmallow mixture over the cereal and stir until the cereal is evenly coated.

5.Lightly spray your hands with cooking spray. For each tree, shape about 1/4 cup of the cereal mixture into a Christmas tree shape on the cookie sheet.

6.Press the candies into the trees to decorate. Refrigerate until firm, about 1 hour. Store the trees in a loosely covered container.

“Music programs in school districts often take some of the first hits when budget challenges such as those that are currently facing the state take hold,” Acting Commissioner Chiaro said. “By participating in the federal surplus program, RCSD was able to obtain an exceptional piano that they would have otherwise been unable to afford. Governor Paterson has asked that state agencies do whatever they can to reduce costs to the taxpayer and administering this program is a productive way to do that.”

Rensselaer City School District Superintendent Sally Shields said "It's not every day that a musical instrument of such high caliber becomes available to a public school.

I am thrilled that our music department will have the ability to work with our students on professional quality equipment that I am certain will raise the quality of our concerts and theatrical productions to a new level. New York State Office of General Services (OGS) Acting Commissioner Carla Chiaro,announced that the Rensselaer City School District (RCSD) paid $1,000 for a 1994 Steinway grand piano worth $80,000 last week. The piano, which was obtained through the OGS administered federal surplus property program, was delivered last week. The District paid $1,000 to cover administrative costs associated with the surplus program, plus shipping fees for the instrument.

The RCSD has acquired more than 75 instruments worth over $200,000 in the 20 years they have participated in the program.

TERRY O’REILLY is a very personable boy with a gorgeous coat who loves all the dogs and people he meets! Despite his years, he has a puppy’s enthusiasm and energy, making him seem more like 2 than 8 years old.

He is inquisitive and an all-around fun fellow who finds pleasure in every environment. He loves going on long walks, romping around a backyard, riding in cars, and playing with other dogs and toys. His temperament is best described as happy-go-lucky, and he would thrive in a home that can give him a lot of exercise - perhaps at a dog park or with other dogs in your backyard.

While he is definitely an active guy, he settles down nicely in your home and enjoys a good cuddle. He is also housebroken and so well-behaved that he has free-run of his foster home. Terry O has been actively working on his leash manners (he is a bit of a jumper and puller), but he is already making good progress in this area. This smart boy has a lot of love to give, and it is hard to imagine how anyone could resist his many charms. In short, he would be a great addition to almost any family, but due to his habit of jumping, he might not be appropriate for families with small children.

A message from the Vet Yea--the holidays are coming! Snoopy and Muffin are staring at you. Are they going to be part of the adventure to mom’s this year? Can you still recall the joy of last year’s 3 hour car ride--the sound of the vomiting cat, the rhythmic whine and profound salivation of the dog, and the sweet soft scent of urine. Right on!. The fun is just beginning.

Once at mom’s your best buddies are quarantined to the basement. Mom loves them but doesn’t want the fur everywhere (the couch is not “off limits” at your house).

Then the surprise--suddenly aunt Agnes is allergic to the cats and is dreadfully afraid of dogs. Auntie is old. Looks like frequent upstairs visits are not going to be very frequent.

You feel slightly miserable that your pets are downstairs and that your aunt is still complaining even though your cat is hiding somewhere behind the boiler.

This may not be your EXACT scenario, but I do hear many variations. Oddly enough, I also hear the other side...”Oh, we had a great time seeing everyone...but they brought the dog, and do you know...” But they brought the dog...I really do hear that a lot.

There are two types of holiday pet owner travelers. Those who bring their pets with them, and those who don’t. Let’s say you are the type of holiday traveler who plans to board their dog at a boarding kennel. This is what I know. I know that boarding is both wonderful and stressful. It solves big problems but generates it’s own wake of concerns--details and issues. Seems as though nothing is easy. All the way around, actually--your dog would rather you never leave the house--I suspect if they had their way you would quit your job, disavow your family, and just focused on what is truly important...them. So they’re going to be stressed when you leave (they get upset when you get the mail), and now your going away for 5 days--they’re certain you’ve sold them. At the very least, that you’ve sold them out. So, this is the situation...now what’s the best solution?

From my perspective...how will your pets express their stress? My only real concern. Some of the dogs board well. Some cats board well. Some do okay. Some don’t do okay. My job, as I see it, is to make sure your pet is at least as happy when they leave as they were when you left them. Now that doesn’t sound like a big deal. Folks come into my hospital (which offers boarding) looking for a home away from home. In some ways we do offer that. Our staff adores our boarders. They get gobs of attention. Mind you, we do not offer a queen size Serta and a warm body to snuggle up to at night. Your dog must be comfortable being kenneled to enjoy the stay. They have to be able to relax and enjoy the warm attention of relative strangers. This means that they have to be used to you being gone a lot, and used to spending large amounts of time in their pen/ crate at home while their family is at work or school. Many people who board with us say that during a typical work day their pet is home alone but that they get a good walk in the morning, another after work, and a final trip around the yard before bed. Those boarders think they’re at the

Marriott. At our facility they are walked every few hours and are able to socialize with people and occasionally with other pets. The stay is especially fun for them if their family signs them up for our day care program (no kidding...we actually do have a day care program for pets--and they usually LOVE it!). Lot’s of places offer similar amenities so shop around to find what suits you best.

Will your pet be a good boarder? The answer truly is petspecific. Some are easy going and enjoy adventures and being around other dogs--like being at camp. While others are nervous and don’t enjoy the energy of a kennel. All of our boarders are examined and their needs discussed.

Sometimes we cannot fill their particular need--it’s nice to avoid a catastrophe. When deciding on a kennel, weigh pro’s and con’s. Every kennel has both categories. Such factors as: price/availability/safety/attention/cleanliness/ pickup times/additional charges/amenities/first aid/other boarders, etc. You should talk to people--get referals, or in some cases, warnings. There are different types of kennels--the most basic will just introduce your dog into their home and your pet sleeps on their living room rug and eats/plays/poops with their dog. Your pet is “spending the night”. More elaborate kennels may have outdoor access at all times, tv’s in every room, individual ventilation systems, remote and internet camera access, the works!! (We’re not that fancy, but we’re great in the “safe” department--you get the idea).

Another option is the pet sitter. Personally, I love this method but boy, you’ve got to know your animal. Are they going to be okay with some stranger coming in and caring for them? For 15 minutes...twice daily? The comfort of home is nice...unless they’re busy trashing the place while you’re away. A “con” may be that pet sitters are usually expensive (you would be too if it was your business). Bottom line, know your pet and investigate your options. Early. Don’t wait. If you know a trip is coming--even 6 months from now, take action and make a plan. Many sitters and many kennels book way out--especially around the holidays.

Conversely, don’t book and cancel last minute. What a costly venture. Some kennels, like all hotels will punish you for canceling last minute--they’ve been telling people they’re full! Now they can’t book the space! Your waffling has cost them a lot of money!

If you’re thinking of boarding with us but unsure how your dog will behave, maybe a trial of day or two at daycare will sort it out. Won’t be an exhaustive or expensive trial but at least we can more accurately judge their behavior with similar stressors. We’ve met a few pets who were unable to relax. Even to their owners surprise. Usually we can evaluate them and if it is clear that we are not the best option we can help you find a better solution.

Personal note: in general I think cats do great with trusted pet sitters. In general, dogs do not. There are many exceptions. We’re here if you need us.

The Old Daley Inn Catering Company on Crooked Lake: “Meant to Be” [Averill Park, NY] – Sometimes we just have to listen to our instincts. When The Old Daley Inn Catering Company owners Stephanie and Jim Petit, and Marty Keary along with business partner and friend Paul Schroeder bought the Crooked Lake House in Averill Park in June they had a clear vision of what it could be with a little TLC: The perfect location for one-of-a-kind weddings, corporate catering and retreats to showcase the well-known fare produced by their chefs. According to Stephanie Petit, creating The Old Daley Inn Catering Company on Crooked Lake was “meant to be”.

The power trio got busy and in only four months they renovated a dilapidated 20,000 square foot property into something truly spectacular. Care was taken with every detail from the crystal chandeliers, to custom carpentry, to lighting. Original hardwood and terrazzo floors were repaired and polished and the walls were painted. They were able to keep the historical integrity of the building, which was no easy task, considering the original structure was built in the late 1800s and the ballrooms were added during the late 1930s. Stephanie Petit’s love for The Crooked Lake House came through as she shared the details of every room, its history and the story behind her design decisions.

The finished product is jaw-dropping, with sprawling light-filled ballrooms surrounded by walls of windows overlooking Crooked Lake. Massive stone fireplaces create atmosphere in the center ballroom and lounge.

The art deco lady’s powder room is both elegant and cozy. Blink and one can imagine a big band playing in the main ballroom’s miniature replica of the philharmonic.

Some may have seen it as a huge risk in a down economy to take on a project of this magnitude but The Petits and Keary believe it was worth it. Even before its December 1st Ribbon Cutting and Opening the “new” Old Daley Inn on Crooked Lake was a huge success as brides and businesses began to book it even as the renovation was still in progress.

Stephanie Petit said, “We had been here many times over the years and knew we loved the place but the timing was never right. In this case we used the economy to do something positive in our community”.

The irony is that In the 1980s Jim Petit and Marty Keary worked at the Old Daley Inn as a dishwasher and a bus boy. Today along with their wives they transformed it into one of the most successful businesses in the Capital District. Stephanie Petit’s background is in restaurant management and Marty Keary’s wife Jan is a wedding and event planner. Marty Keary says, “We really believe our motto – We love what we do, and so will you. The reason for our success is our commitment to service both to the customer and the community, and it shows in everything we do”.

In a bygone era, Teddy Roosevelt spent summers at the Crooked Lake House when he worked in Albany. Tommy Dorsey broadcast live from there during the 1940s. Famous guests have included Benny Goodman, Liz Taylor and Richard Burton to name a few.

On December 1st , a new era begins as the Crooked Lake House will officailly take on new life as The Old Daley Inn on Crooked Lake.

Further, Germany instigated the US to enter the European Theatre by declaring war on the United States. Prayers are requested for our beloved dead who made the supreme sacrifice 69 years ago.

The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks

By Rebecca Skloot Her name was Henrietta Lacks, but scientists know her as HeLa. She was a poor Southern tobacco farmer who worked the same land as her slave ancestors, yet her cells – taken without her knowledge- became one of the most important tools in medicine.

The first “immortal” human cells grown in culture, they are still alive today, though she has been dead for more than sixty years. HeLa cells were vital for developing the polio vaccine; uncovered secrets of cancer, viruses, and the atom bomb’s effects; helped to lead to important advances like in vitro fertilization, cloning, and gene mapping; and have been bought and sold to millions.

Author, Rebecca Skloot takes us on an extraordinary journey, from the “colored” ward of Johns Hopkins Hospital in the 1950’s to stark white laboratories with freezers full of HeLa cells, from Henrietta’s small, dying hometown of Clover, Virginia – a land of wooden slave quarters, faith healings, and voodoo – to East Baltimore today, where her children and grandchildren live and struggle with the legacy of her cells.

Henrietta’s family did not learn of her “immortality” until more than twenty years after her death, when scientists investigating HeLa began using her husband and children in research without informed consent. And though the cells had launched a multimillion-dollar industry that sells human biological materials, her family never saw any of the profits. As Skloot brilliantly shows, the story of the story of the Lacks family – past and present – is inextricably connected to the dark history of experimentation on African Americans, the birth of bioethics, and the legal battles over whether we control the stuff we are made of.

Over the decade it took to uncover this story, the author became enmeshed in the lives of the Lacks family – especially Henrietta’s daughter Deborah, who was devastated to learn about her mother’s cells. ASK THE Happy holidays everyone! I hope you all had a great Thanksgiving and that you’re looking forward to a wonderful rest of the season, whatever holiday you celebrate.

Last month, I mentioned that I had received an inquiry from one of my very fine readers and that I would be answering them in this month’s column. True to my word, written or otherwise, here is the question that was sent to me some weeks ago: Your column is called “Ask The Attorney” but no one sends in questions as far as I can tell from what you write. Here’s a suggestion: please discuss why in criminal cases, after a person is found guilty, why does it take so many months for them to be sentenced? In fact, after the person has been charged, why does it take so long (often a year or more) for the trial to begin?

It just seems, from what I’ve read in the paper, that the judicial system moves extremely slowly.

A few years back, I was a juror in a drunken driving case. It took a whole day to seat the jury, another whole day for the meat of the trial (testimony of the only witness, the arresting police officer), and the final day for the judges charge to the jury plus pour relatively quick decision. That’s a long time for what was a cut and dried type of case.

M. Well, what you say is true – the judicial system does move very slowly. However, I’m not certain that you’d really like it to move any faster. Think about it – if you were a defendant charged with a crime who stands the potential of losing your liberty because you were wrongly accused of a crime, wouldn’t you want your attorney to take all the time she or he needs to make sure your case is properly presented at your trial? Of course you would. Equally, prosecutors are not exactly fond of losing so they want to take as much time as they possibly can to make sure they have all the evidence they need to get a conviction. That’s something you should like as well since you want to feel comfortable knowing that criminals are being held accountable for their crimes and taken off the streets to prevent them from committing the same offense again. It is in the best interest of both sides to make sure that all evidence is gathered and reviewed and analyzed before taking it to a jury to decide some poor persons fate for the next 15 to 20 years or more. In some states, where the death penalty exists, a jury will decide if someone lives or dies so it seems even more important to be certain that the evidence presented at trial is accurate. I believe that all the time necessary should be taken before such a horrible punishment is doled out by any judge on our behalf.

Trials are also expensive. The judge is getting paid, the jury is getting paid, the court reporter is getting paid, the court staff is getting paid, etc., etc. So, it’s in everyone’s best interest to try to resolve the matter – or plea it out – to avoid the expense of an unnecessary trial. A plea bargain is a negotiation and negotiating anything takes time. And no lawyer can negotiate anything when they don’t have all the facts. I do hope, my dear readers, that you do not simply believe someone is guilty because the police arrested them. That would be an incorrect assumption. And if you don’t believe that, just think about all of the people who have been exonerated and proven innocent

since the dawn of DNA evidence and its admissibility in court.

In my opinion, no one should be punished for a crime they didn’t commit so if it takes a bit of time to make sure all the facts are in order before a case gets presented to a jury then so be it.

As for the delay that occurs between a conviction and sentencing, I had to turn to a colleague of mine for some input here. My good friend and stellar criminal trial attorney Greg Cholakis from Troy advises that the delay occurs because, once the defendant is convicted, it becomes necessary to have the state’s probation department do a background check. The probation folks will do an extensive search of all the states courts to determine whether or not the defendant has ever been convicted of a crime before and if they were ever incarcerated.

This information is critical because it can have an impact on the sentence the judge assigns. For instance, a first time offender will be given a lesser sentence than someone who has been convicted of a crime and jailed before. It makes sense – a repeat offender should be given a stronger sentence than someone who is being punished for a first time offense (our criminal justice system is, after all, not only about punishment, it’s about rehabilitation). Such an investigation, to be accurate, will take some time even in the 21st century with the various technologies we have at our disposal. My guess (and I am just guessing here) is that the report takes so long to put together simply because of the number of convicted felons that require such services throughout the state.

We all like to see the bad guy end up behind bars as quickly as possible because it makes our cities and towns safer places to live in. I, for one, just want to make sure that when we do send someone to jail that it’s the right someone. And if it takes time to have that happen, well…then…please – take all the time you need.

Dear Dreamer, Anger is a very difficult emotion to control. It can make even a good dog make bad choices. I want you to practice, be patient, and believe in yourself.

I used to have trouble when I was angry, too. I thought it was too hard. I thought I could not do it. I would jump on puppies and people to push them. I had to work hard at behaving. I had to believe I could do it. I am proud to say that most of the time I am a very good dog.

You can do better when you are angry. My doggy instincts are always right, and they tell me you are much stronger and smarter than you know. Every dog knows that your thinking is a powerful tool.

Tell yourself “I can control myself. I can calm down. I am strong. I can do this.” Take some deep slow breaths and count to 10. If you are still very angry try to be quiet and still. It is better then hurting anyone.

Believe you are strong. This will help. That is how we begin to control our anger. That will make your dreams and wishes come true.

HOLIDAY ROAD TRIP - RULES Our family of six has made countless 9-hour trips back and forth between our home in New York and our family in Virginia. Along the way we have established some hard and fast rules that make holiday travel a better experience.

Avoid Boredom Have each child bring a small back pack filled with fun activities like coloring books, crayons, small stuffed animals or dolls.

Encourage Sleep Bring a fluffy pillow from home and by all means travel at night if possible Keep kids fed and hydrated Bring a cooler with sandwiches, water, granola bars and pretzels – this will save money and time by not having to stop to eat as often.

Keep the driver sane by making sure the kids know in advance not to ask the dreaded question: “How long until we get there?”

AT HOLIDAY TIME - ITS FAMILY FIRST The Family. We were a strange little band of characters trudging through life sharing diseases and toothpaste, coveting one another’s desserts, hiding shampoo, borrowing money, locking each other out of our rooms, inlficting pain and kissing to heal it in the same instant, loving laughing, defending, and trying to figure out the common thread that bound us all together.

Erma Bombeck My ten-year-old son was invited to a birthday party the Saturday after Thanksgiving. “Whoah!” I said. “We have a family get-together planned with Grandma and Granpa and Aunt Roselle and Aunt Debbie and Uncle Charlie!” Then I gave him the same words my mother always used on me when I wanted to skip out on family events in favor of friends, “family comes first!”

Like it or not he was stuck with us. On Saturday, we gathered together for a post-Thanksgiving/ preChristmas feast from as far away as Florida and as close as Connecticut. We spent the entire day catching up, laughing, eating too much baked ziti and egg plant, and cake. We pulled out the board games, which gave way to more eating and laughing. When it was over we said our good-byes until next year.

As I tucked him in that night my son said, “Mom, this was the best day!” I had to agree – there is nothing like family togetherness to remind us of the spirit of the holidays.

The family feast is the quintessential tradition of the holiday season, the chance to take a break from everyday life to be with the people you love most. What are your favorite traditons?

Auditions: Circle Theatre Players holding auditions for Sarah, Plain & Tall on Dec. 10 at 6:30pm and Sunday, Dec. 12 at 2pm, call-backs Wed., Dec. 15 at 7pm. Production dates are March 25-April 3 with a school matinee on March 30. Needed: 3 men ages 30-40, 3 women ages 30-40, 4 children ages 8-12, several small male supporting roles which could be played by women. Some singing skills needed for the Witting and Nordstrom family members.

Gallery: SLCA gallery will exhibit the watercolors of Brigid Rockwell from Nov. 16 - Dec. 31. which presents us with the lyrical and wondrously animated watercolors that brighten up our late fall landscape.

She concentrates her view on scenes from Belldon’s Pond in Troy, a place that holds special meaning to her. Gallery hours are Wed. & Fri. from 10-12 and Sundays from 1-3pm and by appt.

Sundays at the Center: On Sunday, Dec. 5 at 1:30pm Sand Lake Center for the Arts will present Aunt Helen’s Closet’ in its Sundays at the Center program. Storyteller Ellen Mnich weaves her narratives using artifacts to tell us about cultures of the world in this unique, interactive and enriching performance. Ellen’s Mnich’s Aunt Helen collected hundreds of items during her more than 60 years of world travel - clothing, jewelry, swords, umbrellas, etc. People of all walks of life will find Aunt Helen’s Closet, with its museum approach to cross-cultural learning, fascinating and contagious. This 1 to 1 ½ hour program is free, but reservations are needed at 518-674-2007 or www.slca-ctp.org.
