Michael’s Auto Plaza Living the American Dream

excited to join his father and make the dream of Michael’s Auto Plaza a thriving success. Eugene’s knowledge of finance is crucial when a person comes in and they need financing but have not had luck elsewhere. Eugene takes the time to do the extra work with the banks and finance companies to secure the best possible deal. “I enjoy helping make people’s dreams come true, especially in this difficult economy,” he said. “People often underestimate themselves when it comes to financing.” Eugene is also an integral part of the Michael’s thriving international business. He speaks Russian, Spanish and English, and he is a licensed Stock Broker. Michael and his team have plans to expand by removing the old Dunkin Donuts next door. One day, far in the future, he hopes his sons will continue the business. Michael Rubinchuk is fondly referred to as “Mike the Russian” because of his Russian heritage. In the 23 years since he came to America, he has raised his family and built a thriving business. The swift success of Michael’s Auto Plaza is proof that with hard work, determination and a lot of personality, the American Dream is alive and well.

Michael Rubinchuk, owner of Michael’s Auto Plaza in East Greenbush, has been working on cars since he was five years old. Growing up in Gomel, Belarus, Russia (former U.S.S.R.) as a boy, he watched and learned everything he could about engines in the private garages of retired generals. He later studied to become a professional mechanic in Russia and was one of a few to hold a special license. Michael has never stopped learning and today his staff raves about his genius when it comes to cars. “Since I was a kid, I always improved myself. I believe you have to update yourself like you would upgrade a PC,” Michael said. After coming to the United States in 1988, with his wife and children, Michael began working in auto body detailing. He later went into business with his Brother-in-law in Albany, before opening Michael’s Auto Plaza in East Greenbush, in 2003. Michael’s dream was to sell and service cars in any price range, from $5,000 cars to $100,000 cars, and to be the best at it. “I love what I do and I work hard seven days a week to make it successful,” he said. Today most of Michael’s Auto Plaza’s business is through referrals and repeat customers which is a reflection of the high standards of quality they provide their customers. But it helps that Michael relates to people and makes them feel comfortable from the very beginning. The welcoming feeling you get the minute you walk through the doors has a lot to do with the people at Michael’s Auto Plaza. Michael began with a team of people he knew would create a successful business “family,” including his wife Sophia, who manages the record keeping, Gary Krikorian who manages sales, and his son Eugene Rubinchuk, who is the General Manager. Michael is a proud father of three sons, all of whom are intelligent and driven. His son Edward is a Principal in New York City, speaks six languages, and is pursuing his Doctorate. His youngest son is a musician, but Michael wanted him to pursue his education first. Now he is getting his degree at the Wharton School of Busines at UPENN in Philadelphia. Winter Sports Guide By Darren Rosenbaum

D

id you know that if you live in Southern Rensselaer or Northern Columbia County, you can ski or snowboard at six local mountains, all within an hour’s drive of your home? While Jiminy Peak, Catamount, Butternut, Bosquet, Willard Mountain and Maple Ski Ridge cannot compare to a big out of the way resort in the Adirondacks or Vermont, each of our local offerings has a lot going for it. For our 1st Annual Winter Sports Guide, Our Towne is taking a look at what makes each of these local mountains special. Whether it’s E-Coupons, Twilight lift passes or 5th graders skiing for free, there are great deals to be had every day for Our Towne readers. So even though resorts in Vermont may boast of having hundreds of trails, any discussion of heading north or to the Green Mountains must include an expensive fill-up, driving 3 or more hours, forking over $90 for a weekend lift ticket and then digging deep for a nights stay! Enough said…I’m skiing locally How about you?

Jiminy Peak (413) 738-5500 Jiminy Peak, in Hancock, MA boasts of being the ‘largest ski and sno wboard resort in S outhern New England’ . With 45 trails, a vertical drop of 1150 feet and a summit lodge, this claim rings true. While Jiminy certainly attracts big crowds, lift lines at the base flow

smoothly thanks to the Berkshire Express, the areas only 6-passenger high-speed summit lift. The mountain has a great mix of beginner, intermediate and expert slopes that, along with three terrain parks, will challenge even the best skiers and boarders. Lift ticket prices at Jiminy are at the high end for local mountains. This year, purchase of a non-holiday midweek / weekend pass will cost $61 for the day. While expensive, Jiminy offers many ways to save, including signing up for their ‘E-Coupons’, multi-day discounts, State Days and Twilight skiing among others. For the winter sports enthusiast, Ski Butternut has a lot to offer. In operation since 1963, Ski Butternut is located in Great Barrington, MA. With 22 trails, a vertical drop of 1000 ft. and two terrain parks, Ski Butternut is a great choice for skiers or boarders. On the off chance that ‘mother nature’ doesn’t cooperate, they guarantee 100% coverage on over 110 acres of skiable terrain. Three base quads and a triple lift service two peaks, ensuring you’ll get to the top quickly and safely. For those of you who don’t ski or snowboard, Ski Butternut offers a Tubing Park with 8 lanes. A weekend ticket costs $55 but, if you head out during a holiday or school break expect to pay $60. However, a great way to save is with these options: E-Coupons; $25 lift tickets Monday through Friday; 5th graders ski free Sunday through Friday; Military, Police, Fire, EMT’s and Scouts save up to $25 on weekends; College students save $20 on weekends and holidays. With 14 trails, a vertical drop of 515 ft. and a terrain park, Willard Mountain is a great choice for beginner and intermediate skiers and snowboarders. If you’re a boarder, be sure to check their on-line calendar for the ‘Open Rail Jam Competitions’ Willard hosts throughout the season. And if skiing or snowboarding just isn’t your thing, take some time out of a busy weekend to have fun with the kids at Willard Mountain’s Tubing Park. Not only is Willard Mountain a ‘little mountain that’s big on family fun’, but they’ve gone out of their way to keep lift prices within the reach of local families. For instance every Friday at Willard Mountain (excluding holidays) is ‘TGIF’, which means a lift ticket, lesson & rental for only $35! And every Tuesday (excluding holidays) from 4:00 - 9:30 is ‘Adult Night’ when tickets are just $20, and $30 with rentals! But the best deal can be had every Thursday night (excluding holidays) when 2 lift tickets cost only $25 from 4:00 - 9:00! For a great warm-up, start your day by taking Ridge Run to Lower Promenade. At 2.5 miles, its combination of spectacular long distance views at the top and wide boulevards at the bottom make it the longest run in the Berkshires. Then, if ice flows through your veins, jump on the high speed quad lift to challenge yourself on Catapult, recognized as the steepest drop in the Berkshires. Whatever your skill level, Catamount will surprise even the most experienced skier and snowboarder. Winter Solstice: Celebrating the Return of the Sun

by Jae Way, Holistic Life Coach It is the longest and darkest night of the year. But the Winter Solstice celebration is all about LIGHT. At 12:30 am EST on December 22nd, mother earth’s northern hemisphere ~ in which we live ~ will reach its farthest tilt away from the Sun’s light. It is our astronomical new year. From that moment until June 20, 2012, each day we will gain a minute of daylight. These are the scientific facts about Winter Solstice, but it is so much more! Sunlight is vitally important. All living things literally owe their lives to it. And this is why, for millennia, humans in virtually every culture have celebrated the Winter Solstice. In fact, many major world cultures’ religious holidays are rooted in ancient Solstice celebration traditions. Ancient peoples built firelight altars and stone circles aligned to the sunset and sunrise of this day. On Solstice eve, they would maintain bonfires to stave off the cold and darkness. Vigilantly tending their firelight would strengthen their Hope and Faith that the Light of the Sun would return. Living together inside the surrounding darkness through the long nights, these celebrations also strengthened their connection to each other. Today, scientific knowledge has erased our concerns about the Sun disappearing, and our flick-of-the-switch electricity has reduced our reliance upon the Sun for light to see by. Thankfully, Hope and Faith are still themes that we celebrate at this time of year. Unfortunately, what we seem to have lost through our scientific gains is the connection that our ancestors had to the cyclic rhythms of the year. To them, Winter was a naturally imposed time to go inside. Not just inside our homes, but inside ourselves ... to reflect upon an Inner Light, to renew our Hopes, our Dreams and our Faith in being able to manifest them.

Capital Region Textile Artists Exhibit CRTA will hold their second exhibit at the Chapel + Cultural Center from December 1- 29. or most of us, the holiday season means less down time and planning nutritious meals, more stress, and difficulty sticking to our workout routine. Even dedicated exercisers can have difficulty staying on track during the holidays. Studies show that on average most people gain 1-4 lbs from Thanksgiving through New Year’s Eve. For those already trying to lost weight, these statistics can be discouraging. Planning ahead and making exercise a priority can reduce your stress level and help you combat unwanted holiday pounds. Here are a few tips to help you stay on track this holiday season. Set realistic fitness goals and stick to them. If you can’t make your favorite group exercise class due to holiday parties or shopping, re-arrange your schedule to try a new class (the Y offers classes throughout the day). If you typically prefer aerobics, try a workout with weights. We can help you make the change. If you

’ve spent most of my adult life connecting with people for business. Some people call it networking. I prefer to call it connecting. There’s a difference, and there is a style to both. For years I networked for business. For leads and contacts. Attended events, passed business cards back and forth, followed-up about business and be follow-ed up as well. Remember this, when you pass your card and receive another, you are sharing your information as much as they are sharing theirs. So, I would receive the inevitable phone call, the invitation to attend a class or workshop, and yes the occasional beauty product pitch. I don’t have an issue with that. I’ve sold a few beauty products myself (and have the lipstick gallery to prove it). Besides, I handed out my card too. If you are networking for a job, collecting names and information can be very helpful. You now have a place and a person to send your resume. However, I believe if you apply a bit more investigating, more curiosity to the process you will turn networking into connecting. How do you connect with purpose? You ask questions, you find a way (whatever is your method, some people like to jot down symbols, or something that sounds like the persons name, or even colors for clothing or hair) to help remember the person. I like to write down, as soon as I am able to have the time, a few bullets of interesting 22

love weights, try a group fitness or a spin class. Any exercise is better than none. Include family time in your exercise. Pulling the kids up a hill a few times can make sledding as beneficial as a jog. Taking the dog for a walk, ice skating, snowshoeing or cross country skiing provides quality time with the one's you love and great exercise. Keep a water bottle with you at all times to avoid being thirsty or dehydrated. Drinking water also gives you a sense of fullness which helps limit your temptation to eat more food. Use moderation when indulging in party foods. Try smaller portions of not so healthy foods and larger portions of salads, vegetables, fruit or lean meats. Having a light, healthy snack before a holiday gathering can help curb your hunger and avoid binging on sweets or other high calorie treats. Take advantage of a lunch hour power walk. Take the stairs instead of the elevator. Park your car further away to increase your steps to and from work. Always have your workout gear with you to help stick to exercising. Remember: the holidays are a time to enjoy with family and friends. It’s not what you do and eat from Thanksgiving to the New Year but more about what you do and eat from New Year to Thanksgiving. Think moderation when it comes to indulging this holiday season and make exercise a priority. Keeping yourself on track and being health conscious is the best gift you can give yourself and your family.

tidbits that I gleaned from the conversation I’ve just had with the person. For example, I love to ask questions about travel. Have you been out of the country? What is your favorite place to visit? Do you have a favorite state? What have you done of interest and one of my favorite questions to ask, “What is your best tip to give another fellow traveler?”. I then jot some of those answers on the back of their business card. If they are a traveler, you’ve hit the jackpot. If not, you’ve learned something as well, and can ask another set of questions. The point is to draw out some interesting tidbits; animal favorites, children stories, grandchildren, and hobbies, anything. Each one giving you a peek into the individual you are speaking with. Now, here’s where you make the connections work, the next time you meet this person, or if you e-mail them, you find a common ground, you mention an article you saw about Italy or that you know about someone who knows where to get that special coffee they spoke about. I remember listening to someone speak about a certain kind of wine they loved. They were disappointed that they couldn’t find that wine anymore. I knew I had just seen that wine in the town we were in. I stopped by and sure enough there was this “can’t be found anywhere” wine. I bought a bottle and gave it to her. The cost was minimal the impact, unforgettable. Connecting with purpose is twofold; you are connecting because you are truly interested in meeting and knowing new people and you want to take it beyond a simple pass through. I’ve made connections with people that on the surface seemed so unlikely, until I found a common ground and extended my hand and friendship.

The end of the calendar year brings the end of my tenure as chair of the Chamber’s Board of Directors. What a challenging and fulfilling year it has been! As a sole proprietor, I know what it’s like to wear many hats. My service as chair this past year has shown me that the Chamber understands this, and is completely focused on assisting business owners like myself to succeed. Throughout all of our events, programs, and services, the Chamber’s mission of advocating for the business community shines through. Whether it’s helping with a referral, connecting members with one another, providing educational opportunities, encouraging economic development, or expanding cost-saving programs, the Chamber is all about YOU. This past year was no exception. Let me take this opportunity to review with you several of the key accomplishments achieved in 2011, thanks to the dedication and enthusiastic work of my fellow board members, our president, the Chamber staff, and our membership. We completed our three-year Strategic Plan, which serves as a roadmap for our organization. We successfully implemented our goal to assist members to “Market, Develop & Connect” their businesses and themselves through cost-effective advertising opportunities, professional development, and high-impact networking forums. These are the key advantages that place your business ahead of the competition and give you the power to grow and expand here in Rensselaer County and beyond. One of the biggest challenges faced by the business community is providing affordable health care. Working proactively, and thinking outside the box, the Chamber has developed an innovative, cost-saving, quality care health insurance model available only to our members. Through CDPHP, we’re able to offer a menu of eight different plans, with a broad spectrum of price points and healthy incentives. This council is charged with redesigning the relationship between state government and the private business sector to stimulate local economic development and create jobs. Linda is in the position to make the voice of our local business community heard on the state level. She is advocating for us in an unprecedented role, effecting real change for a healthier business environment. This is the Chamber at its best:

as an effective resource and advocate for the community-at-large. Throughout the year, the Chamber brought you valuable business workshops on hiring and firing practices; building a marketing plan; business and grantwriting; project management; and business security. We hosted economic development forums, celebrated local success stories, and provided the kind of networking events that propel your business forward in tangible ways. The Chamber’s professional development programs continued to give you a fast-track to your skill-building through SmartUp and The Leadership Institute. Our Economic Development Partnership attracted new investment partners and assisted a record number of businesses with inquiries and referrals for starting up, relocating, or expanding in Rensselaer County. It has been an amazing year. As I hand-off the position of chair to Keith Goldstein in 2012, let me express my gratitude for the opportunity to serve the Chamber and our membership. This is such an exciting organization, and I strongly encourage you to continue to support it through your membership and active participation. The more active you are, the more you and your business or organization will benefit from all the Chamber has to offer. A MESSAGE FROM THE VET Foods for The Holiday by Dr. David Stone, Bloominggrove Veterinary Hospital

Actually that title is misleading but seems seasonally appropriate. Quick note to everyone out there who has an obese cat. In almost every case, it's your fault. I know that indoor cats are really hard to keep lean and fit, but most cats don't require all that you are feeding them. They store it in the form of fat. Your cat is fat because they are being given more calories than they need. By you. So, stop. Or at least cut back a little. At least slow the rate of their distorted growth. I'm just cranky because I've seen 4 or 5 hard cases today and I don't enjoy seeing pets or their people suffer. Two of the cases could have been utterly prevented. Obesity was the key. There are surprisingly few things in life that we actually control. Obesity is at least mostly preventable and usually curable. The problem is that we too are animals--and like our pets, we like things that send signals to the pleasure centers of our brain and body. We delight in the highly processed, unsaturated things--add mega salt and sugar and you've got a behavioral problem. Better get the prescription. We believe what's nutritionally best for us should taste like Disney Land. Fast food thrives even as

we're enduring a several decades old push to educate the population of America about the evils of fried food. I had McDonald's tonight. I eat there rarely. Every ganglion in my brain that has anything to do with food and pleasure was awakened. I think this is how dog's feel when they get a big bowl of Kibbles n' Bits. It's probably a lot like McDonald's in that you shouldn't eat it for every meal even though it's been 'deemed' edible. Who does the deeming. Did they actually come up with safe levels of Phenobarbital in dog food? I don't think so. But it's there. Down at the parts per million level. Probably nothing to worry about. After all, there are some heavy metals we can also find in the kibble. Turns out we've got allowable ppm of feces in that kibble. I suspect if you drizzled corn syrup on feces, a dog would eat it (some dogs wouldn't require the syrup, they just have bad habits). So the trick is, to find a kibble or can that embodies the values that you have. One that you can afford. I'm not naming any great companies in this forum. Companies change. Things become known about them. Advertising is effective--even against a shrewd customer. There are web sites for food suggestions and analysis and ratings. There are explanations. There are honest assessments by people who gain nothing by your choice of dog food. You will find a food that truly meets your thoughts about what food should be. It's easier to have good habits when you are working with good tools--their food is a tool for it's health. Animals who eat appropriately tend to see less of me.

This evening I had an early Thanksgiving meal with several friends. There were only a few things on the table that shouldn’t be eaten by a dog or cat. Large quantities of gravy may cause diarrhea or pancreatitis--and the same for the butter. Tons of bread seems like a bad idea. Folks proudly tell me that their dog or cat never gets table food. What on earth are you eating if a dog can’t tolerate it? I don’t know what’s on your table, but this pre holiday table had turkey, green beans, sweet potatoes, mashed potatoes, corn, and carrots, apple and pumpkin pie--all of which are excellent for your pet. If you can get them to eat a bite of the cranberry sauce, that would be good too. Everything in moderation--a few bites of everything is great, whereas 2 pounds of fried potatoesmight mess with their digestion. Also, if you don’t want a perpetual beggar, you should always feed them in their bowl. Or, just smile, realize you’re going to eventually lose the battle, and set them a plate at the table. As Christmas quickly approaches I should add a few reminders. Carefully dispose of all antifreeze. Don’t leave your dog unattended in a parked car--left on or off. Shovel some paths for your pet. Put your holiday goodies in cupboards and drawers to slow down the counter surfer. Sometimes a 12 inch lightweight garden fence will keep dogs out of Christmas trees. They usually train quickly. A 12 foot high electric fence won’t help to keep your cat out of the tree. Just give up, they don’t train quickly. Make your holiday grooming appointments early--get all dolled up--and take lots of pictures! Happy Holidays! David Stone, DVM

T

he end of the year can raise stress levels to an all time high; the holidays, final exams for college students, and weather changes are some of the factors causing stress. Some people experience physical issues that may be caused by stress and they may not even know stress is the root cause. Sleep disturbances, muscle aches, bruxism (teeth grinding), memory problems, depression, headache, fatigue, irritable bowel symptoms to name a few. Long term stress may also wreak havoc on the cardiovascular system causing increased blood pressure, as well as many other health issues. The first step in overcoming stress is to simply find out the source of stress and eliminate it. This can be impossible in certain situations and thus stress management techniques need to come into play. Here is a list of some things that may be used to manage stress: Dietary: •Include whole, unprocessed foods in your diet •Eating small frequent meals throughout the day can help to stabilize your blood sugar throughout the day. •Avoid sugar, alcohol, and caffeine Lifestyle: •Find a hobby/activity that will help you to relieve stress. Dear Dave: Tooth Sensitivity is one of the most common complaints we receive. It affects millions of adults so you’re not alone. There are many possible causes and treatments. Here are a few common ones. Causes 1. Active Decay (cavities) 2. Brushing too hard can cause the gums to recede. The exposed roots can be senstitive to sweets and cold temperatures. 3. Abrasive toothpastes. Many tartar control and whitening products include abrasive ingredients that can cause you to actually remove enamel from your tooth, causing sensitivity 4. Periodontal disease. Often painless to start, bacteria and disease around the tooth causes the loss of bone support, exposing sensitive roots. Solutions 1. Use a soft toothbrush. Fresh Fish for Your Holiday Parties Ingredients 1 pound penne 3 cloves garlic, minced 2 table spoons onion, chopped finely 1 tablespoon butter 1 cup vodka 1 cup of tomato sauce 4 -5 cups heavy cream 5 red pepper flakes Freshly ground black pepper Grated Romano cheese, for serving Directions Cook the pasta Sautee the garlic, black pepper, red chile peppers, onions and butter in a saucepan over medium heat until soft. Pour in the vodka, being careful if your stove has an open flame (remove the pan from the heat before adding). Cook and reduce for 2 to 3 minutes or until alcohol burns off. Pour in the heavy cream. Cook until cream reduces (3 to 5 minutes) Then pour in the tomato sauce Stir the mixture until it’s thoroughly combined, then reduce the heat to low. Pour the drained pasta into the sauce and toss to combine. Sprinkle on the Romano cheese Options ---Add: sautéed or grilled chicken, salmon, grilled vegetables 36
